A common back pathology in pupils is scoliosis, which is an abnormal curvature of the spine.

drat.  i have scoliosis and it's given me trouble all these years.  it's no joke.  there are times when i couldn't bend at all and getting up from bed after a night's sleep requires too much ceremony.  and i was advised against playing bowling; i had to let go of my bowling set of ball, bag and shoes, never mind that a doctor said that i lost about 2 inches of my supposed full height potential.  let's spare our kids from this malady, please.

the photographer's (h.s. wong) account of the bombing's aftermath:

"It was a horrible sight. People were still trying to get up.  Dead and injured lay strewn across the tracks and platform.  Limbs lay all over the place.  Only my work helped me forget what I was seeing.  I stopped to reload my camera.  I noticed that my shoes were soaked with blood.  I walked across the railway tracks, and made many long scenes with the burning overhead bridge in the background.  Then I saw a man pick up a baby from the tracks and carry him to the platform.  He went back to get another badly injured child.  The mother lay dead on the tracks.  As I filmed this tragedy, I heard the sound of planes returning.  Quickly, I shot my remaining few feet [of film] on the baby.  I ran toward the child, intending to carry him to safety, but the father returned.  The bombers passed overhead.  No bombs were dropped." During the Battle of Shanghai, part of the Second Sino-Japanese War, Japanese military forces advanced upon and attacked Shanghai, China's most populous city.  Wong and other newsreel men, such as Harrison Forman and George Krainukov, captured many images of the fighting, including the gruesome aftermath of an aerial bombing made by three Chinese aircraft against two prominent hotels on Nanking Road on Saturday, August 14, 1937, called "Bloody Saturday". just wondering if this is some typographical error of wikipedia.  three chinese aircraft bombing their own nanking road? ???

One of the most memorable war photographs ever published, and perhaps the most famous newsreel scene of the 1930s, the image stimulated an outpouring of Western anger against Japanese violence in China.  Journalist Harold Isaacs called the iconic image "one of the most successful 'propaganda' pieces of all time". Bloody Saturday

Famous photograph of a crying baby amid the bombed-out ruins
of Shanghai's South Railway Station, Saturday, August 28, 1937

Bloody Saturday is the name of a black-and-white photograph that was published widely in Septemberâ€"October 1937 and in less than a month had been seen by more than 136 million viewers.  Depicting a Chinese baby crying within the bombed-out ruins of Shanghai South Railway Station, the photograph became known as a cultural icon demonstrating Japanese wartime atrocities in China.  Taken a few minutes after a Japanese air attack on civilians during the Battle of Shanghai, Hearst Corporation photographer H.S. "Newsreel" Wong, also known as Wong Hai-Sheng or Wang Xiaoting, did not discover the identity or even the sex of the injured child, whose mother lay dead nearby. (wikipedia)

i believe, lorenz, that this has more to do with migration and income distribution than government policy on population.

OT: below are some sickening slogans about china's one-child policy:

"If you don't receive the tubal ligation surgery by the deadline, your house will be demolished!"

"We would rather scrape your womb than allow you to have a second child!"

"Kill all your family members if you don't follow the rule!"

And…

"Once you get captured, an immediate tubal ligation will be done; Should you escape, we'll hunt you down; If you attempt a suicide, we'll offer you either the rope or a bottle of poison."

just some points of clarification, please.

is it the bar of public opinion?

is it the 2011 philippine bar?

to what extent is the bar public?

are the bouncers active?

how's the guinness?

'presently' can also mean 'in a little while'; is the bar closed right now, or will it close in a little while?

is the manager closed?  if so, when will he open himself to the public?

Distribution of the Falls between Argentina and Brazil

Iguazu Falls are arranged in a way that seems a reverse J. The border between Brazil and Argentina runs through the Devil's Throat.  On the right bank is the Brazilian territory, which has just over 20% of the jumps of these falls, and the left side jumps are Argentines, which make up almost 80% of the falls.  To completely and fully appreciate the falls, the recommendation is to visit both the Argentine and Brazilian side, as one side is a panorama of the other, and vice versa.  Those who know have said, more or less, that "from the Brazilian side you see the falls, from the Argentinian side you live them". di maihap, because there's nothing to count.  di man ko duolonon ug laki.  my two cousins who were my age were the ones who were attractive to boys.  not me.  and that's the most clinical way that i can put it.

from your description, korean girls may as well be talking armadillos; hard surface, but we'll never know what lies beneath.

i am very sly. instead of kissing girls at the movie theaters or in the park, i would kiss them during the silent nights at the laboratory. different pod ba. ;) he he he..

from shy, the 'h' was simply changed to 'l', and there you were on your way... sly at the lab, heady with the waft of chemicals...

Ako, uwawon ko kaayo sa una, specially sa college years nako. I had to overcome my "shy" nature and learn to ask girls out on dates, kai gi tagaan ko'g words of encouragement sa ahong mga amigo.

what real friends they were!  i hope they weren't afraid that you'd ask them out instead. ;D

QuoteI used to ask out my female lab partners in Biology, Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physics, Microbiology and Molecular Biology Classes.

All this may or may not have been contemplated by the DepEd.  Indeed, it is enough that the program has for its principal goal the liberation of our children from the double burden of acquiring basic concepts using a language they are learning for the first time.  Still, there is no doubt in my mind that the shift to a mother tongue in the early years of formal schooling will have revolutionary consequences not only for Philippine education, but also for the way we think of ourselves as a nation.

note:  the whole piece is from the column "Public Lives" of Randy David, Philippine Daily Inquirer, 15 March 2011 (http://opinion.inquirer.net/)

with or without this sociologist's pointing it out, no question, the resurgence has been going on here at tubagbohol.  we may switch between 3 (or 4?) languages with ease, but it's the use of bisaya/cebuano/boholano that has shown much sophistication.  :D

As a native speaker of Kapampangan, I look forward to the literary resurgence that the return of the mother tongue to our schools may trigger.  The writing of teaching materials using our indigenous languages will definitely spawn a renewed interest in local history and culture.  It will instill pride in our beginnings, and hopefully lift our nation from the morass of demoralization in which it has long been stuck.

But, the scars of neglect are typically borne by the language itself.  Mother tongues get stunted when they are not used, particularly when they are no longer written.  When people complain that some languages are not complex enough to communicate an intellectual culture, they forget that languages do not grow by themselves.  “Every language,” says Steven Pinker, “… is constantly under renovation.  Despite the lamentation of language lovers and the coercion of tongue troopers, languages change unstoppably as people need to talk about new things or convey new attitudes.”

i admit i have learned so many new words, fascinating ones, here at tb.  our mother tongue is truly a very sophisticated language.

...These days, because of the Internet, physical distance is no longer a barrier to real-time communication.  We can, without much effort, become instantly reconnected to e-groups around the world that are devoted to promoting the use of our mother tongues.  It is a wonderful irony that globalization is reviving local languages.

and isn't it wonderful that tubagbohol is also a venue for heretofore secret poets who may not have thought of writing poetry in their mother tongue.  it looks like tubagbohol has created a secret poets society!

Fortunately, one never really loses one’s mother tongue.  All it takes to reactivate it as a faculty is to listen to others speak it.  These days, because of the Internet, physical distance is no longer a barrier to real-time communication.  We can, without much effort, become instantly reconnected to e-groups around the world that are devoted to promoting the use of our mother tongues.  It is a wonderful irony that globalization is reviving local languages.

By imposing English as a medium of instruction, our schools were, in a sense, producing a nation of immigrantsâ€"individuals with little or no attachment to the places in which they were born and raised.  The self-estrangement that many young Filipinos feel today may have stemmed largely from the institutional purging of mother tongues from the circuits of our national life.

this i beg to disagree.  self-estrangement, maybe, but no attachment to their land of birth?  i doubt.  lorenzo, for one, is a living, breathing, very real example of the exact opposite.

I have always believed that to speak a language is to be a member of a community; by speaking its language, we participate in the community’s evolving consciousness.  The need to speak a language is proportional to our need to communicate with that community.  Looking back at those years, I now believe that, instead of strengthening the ties between school and community, English-based basic education had the effect of restricting our connection to our communities.  This is the exact opposite of how John Dewey imagined the ideal relationship between the school and society.

I don’t think that experience necessarily made us better speakers of English.  But it certainly developed in us a wrong-headed skepticism about the value of our own languages and the ways of life in which they were embedded.

wow!  right on the head of the nail.
#35199
This fundamental change will require the production of new teaching materials and modules using local languages that have long been marginalized as formal tools of communication and education.  Those who were in grade school and high school in the 1950s will remember how local languages, except Tagalog, were explicitly banned from school precincts.  It was a crazy era when pupils who made the mistake of shifting to the local “dialect” in a moment of panic during classroom recitation were routinely fined for the “offense.”  I don’t think that experience necessarily made us better speakers of English.  But it certainly developed in us a wrong-headed skepticism about the value of our own languages and the ways of life in which they were embedded.

The 12 mother tongues that will soon be harnessed for classroom use are Tagalog, Kapampangan, Pangasinense, Iloko, Bikol, Cebuano, Hiligaynon, Waray, Tausug, Maguindanaoan, Maranao, and Chabacano.

and, thus, as a language is also boholano.
