'John Carter' Loss Expected to Be $200M

By Joshua L. Weinstein | The Wrap â€" 16 hours ago

"John Carter" is now an official flop.

The Walt Disney Co. on Monday acknowledged in a statement that the movie's poor performance at the box office likely will force Disney to take a $200 million writedown. The company expects its studio division will post an operating loss of as much as $120 million in the second fiscal quarter of this year.

"John Carter," based on an Edgar Rice Burroughs character, was made for about a quarter-billion dollars;marketing costs were another $100 million on top of that. But the movie grossed only $30.2 million domestically during its first weekend of release, taking in a measly $13.5 million its second.

Sweet Celebration: Pinoy Askal Wins United Kingdom's Dog Of The Year 2004!

Animal Kingdom Foundation Inc.'s dog, Sweet, is the United Kingdom's Dog of the Year for 2004.  The Dog of the year is an annual contest sponsored by Daily Mail Weekend Magazine where they search for the dog with the most unusual and memorable experience.

Sweet bested over 8,000 other entries coming from all over United Kingdom and romped away with a Silver trophy, a gold medallion and a grand prize of 1,000 pounds.  Prominent members of the British press judged the contest.

Several months back, AKFI operatives led by Charles Wartenberg, Suzanne Llanera, Luis Buenaflor Jr and Dr. Winston Samaniego rescued a 3-month-old mongrel from dog butchers in Baguio.  Sweet, as he came to be known, was nursed back to health and brought by Charles to London to become part of the Wartenberg family.

"We never thought Sweet would become a celebrity abroad!  All we want is for him to have a happy home," says AKFI's senior researcher Luis Buenaflor Jr.  "He seems so helpless when I was holding him during the rescue.  Now, he is a Pinoy superstar in London!"  Suzanne Llanera, AKFI's officer- in- charge fondly remembers.

In one of its sorties against the illegal dog traders in the north, [the Animal Kingdom Foundation, Inc.] AKF Inc. together with its mother organization International Wildlife Coalition Trust (IWCT) rescued a fledging 3 month old dog from a slaughterhouse in Baguio City.

Sweet, as he came to be called, is just one among the thousands of dogs that ends up in one of the many illegal slaughterhouses in Baguio each week.  He was found cowering in a corner of a very cramped cage along with several other dogs without food and water.  Earlier, 40 other dogs were brutally slaughtered in front of him, their heads smashed with a wooden club.  Perhaps it was his soulful eyes or demeanor amidst the carnage that caught the attention of IWCT Director Charles Warternberg to rescue Sweet and bring him to London.

"It is likely that Sweet was more of a family pet who was either stolen or sold to the dog-meat traders as he was in fairly good physical condition when we rescued him", Charles said.

From Baguio, Sweet was immediately taken to a pet hospital in Makati where he was treated and recuperated for a month prior to his flight to London.

At 12:35 p.m. August 2, 2002, Sweet arrived at the Gatwick airport to begin his new life with Charles Wartenberg.

“Do what you love and you won’t work a day in your life.” (attributed to Confucius)
#35011
“do what you love and you won’t work a day in your life”

In my last class of college, my accounting professor left our class with this story to close:

A boat docked in a tiny Mexican village.  An American tourist complimented the Mexican fisherman on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took him to catch them.

“Not very long,” answered the Mexican.

“But then, why didn’t you stay out longer and catch more?” asked the American.

The Mexican explained that his small catch was sufficient to meet his
needs and those of his family.

The American asked, “But what do you do with the rest of your time?”

“I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, and take a siesta with my wife. In the evenings, I go into the village to see my friends, have a few drinks, play the guitar, and sing a few songs … I have a full life.”

The American interrupted, “I have an MBA from Harvard and I can help you!  You should start by fishing longer every day.  You can then sell the extra fish you catch.  With the extra revenue, you can buy a bigger boat.

“And after that?” asked the Mexican.

With the extra money the larger boat will bring, you can buy a second one and a third one and so on until you have an entire fleet of trawlers.  Instead of selling your fish to a middle man, you can then negotiate directly with the processing plants and maybe even open your own plant.  You can then leave this little village and move to Mexico City, Los Angeles, or even New York City!  From there you can direct your huge new enterprise.”

“How long would that take?” asked the Mexican.

“Twenty, perhaps 25 years,” replied the American.

“And after that?” the Mexican asked.

“Afterwards?  That’s when it gets really interesting,” answered the American, laughing.  “When your business gets really big, you can start selling stocks and make millions!”

“Millions?  Really?  And after that?”

“After that you’ll be able to retire, live in a tiny village near the coast, sleep late, play with your children, catch a few fish, take a siesta with your wife and spend your evenings drinking and enjoying your friends.”

Website 4Beauty, set up by Channel 4 to confront issues of body image among women and girls, found that women who are dissatisfied with their faces and bodies who focused negatively on such issues as cellulite or wrinkles than on their happiness and health- often as a direct result of images in the media - their body dissatisfaction can lead to eating disorders, body dysmorphia, harmful over-exercising or depression.

On the site, psychologist Dr Linda Papadopolous, who has researched the topic extensively for the government, said excessive airbrushing can have the direct effect of making women feel bad.

We're exposed to more images today than at any time in our history, so we're more likely to compare ourselves to them,' she said.  'There's no end of studies that show that consistently seeing airbrushed images makes women feel worse about themselves.'

Troubled star unrecognisable after being heavily airbrushed for beauty campaign

By Deborah Arthurs
19 March 2012

Having notched up a marriage breakdown, severe weight loss, drug-related collapse and a stint in rehab over the past few months, Demi Moore has had a difficult time of it lately.

Naturally, she has been looking less than her best, the worry and torment of her experience etched across her thinning face.

But as heavily airbrushed photographs of the star from the latest campaign for beauty brand Helena Rubinstein are released, it is apparent that any such signs of stress have been entirely erased.

More than that, thanks to an over-zealous session with Photoshop and the omnipresent airbrush, the natural contours of Demi's face are gone: her strong, angular chin; the lines running from nose to mouth, the shape of her nose - all are entirely obliterated.

The 49-year-old star is all but unrecognisable.  In her place is a bleached, smooth, line-free version of Demi that looks more like a computer generated fembot than the familiar Hollywood actress with five decades under her belt.

Earlier this week, he was hit by allegations from a Polish actress who says that she had a three-month affair with Gibson last year during the time of Lucia's birth.

After the alleged affair fizzled out, 26-year-old Violet Kowal claims  -  rightly or wrongly  -  that the actor rang her and yelled: 'Listen, you bitch, do you know who this is? Don't f*** with me or I'll make you suffer.'

A chastened Gibson, meanwhile, is said to have spent the weekend deep in prayer with his personal confessor, Catholic priest Father Clement Procopio.

'It's hit Mel very badly,' an LA casting director, who has known Gibson for 20 years, told me this week.

'The knives are out for him.  He just about escaped with his career when he blurted out that stuff about Jews, but this could really finish him.'

If that turns out to be the case, the troubled and deeply unpleasant Gibson will have only himself to blame.

During the height of his fame in the early 1990s, the long-suffering Robyn [Gibson's wife, now his ex] threatened to leave the heart-throb if he did not join Alcoholics Anonymous.

She also persuaded him to check into rehab and rediscover his once-staunch Catholic faith.

Later he admitted he had reached 'the height of spiritual bankruptcy' and had contemplated suicide, and it had been former dental nurse Robyn who had saved him from himself.

But the marriage was blighted by regular claims of his taste for a succession of beautiful women.

And if sources close to Miss Grigorieva  -  who met the star on the set of his 2008 movie Edge Of Darkness  -  are to believed, it is a habit that Gibson has remained unable to kick.

The Mad Max star spouted a now infamous anti-Jewish tirade when he drunkenly claimed Jews were responsible 'for all the wars in the world', after he was arrested in Malibu for drunk-driving.

Meanwhile, there are claims from some surrounding Miss Grigorieva that she was left angry and bemused during their three-year relationship by his refusal to live with her and their daughter, preferring to remain alone in his Malibu compound while she has been living 15 miles away in another of his properties in the Los Angeles suburb of Sherman Oaks.

After a series of rows about money, Gibson called off a planned Christmas Day wedding and is said to have bowed to pressure from friends who have long considered his fiercely ambitious new lover to be a gold-digger.

According to sources in the U.S., the dark-haired Oksana, who has dated a string of older, rich men, refused point-blank to sign a pre-nuptial agreement offered to her by Gibson which would have paid her $5 million (£3.25 million) a year for ten years should their planned marriage fail.

Despite the claims of cranky outfits like the Optimum Population Trust (OPT) -- which has argued that in order "for the whole planet to avoid the fate of Rwanda, Malthusian thinking needs rehabilitation" -- Africa actually contains 11 of the world's 20 least densely populated nations.  And some of these not-very-densely populated African countries have severe social problems.  It's not human numbers that cause them; it's something else, something social and therefore eminently fixable, says O'Neill.

Consider the example of China:

In 1949, the population of China was 540 million and average life expectancy was 36.5 years; today the population of China is 1.3 billion and average life expectancy is 73.4 years.

There are now six times as many cities in China (655) as there were five decades ago and around 235 million Chinese have been lifted out of poverty in the past 15 years alone.

Ironically, it is often people in the most overpopulated parts of the planet who have the nicest lives.  Take Manhattan, says O'Neill:

There are 1.7 million people crammed on to that tiny island and their lifestyles are the envy of millions of people around the world.

Yet in Africa, which is far more sparsely populated than some would have us believe, there are still major problems of poverty and malnutrition.

An excellent point, Raquel. The significant discrepancies in consumption between the wealthy and the poor is evident. I want to share something with you and the rest of the readers here, a concept that is studied in Biology that is referred to by Evolutionary Biologists, Molecular Biologists and Zoologists as The Malthusian Theory.

In regards to the concept of resources , it is driven by the Theory of Malthus. Resources are limited, my dear. Human population is not limited, and on the contrary continues to grow. Right now we are fine, because the amount of resources is able to feed and provide for the consumer, however, when these resources become limited to the point where population centers are starving, it will result into war and territorial issues to provide for a nation's population etc.

luckily, it's only a theory and not a principle; a field day has been going on to debunk this theory.  first and foremost is that it is not for man to decide who among them should live or die or, in keeping with this theory vis-a-vis resources, who among men should sit to feast at the table.

MALTHUSIAN THEORY DOESN'T ADD UP

When the original population scaremonger Thomas Malthus predicted in the 1790s that if people didn't stop breeding then "premature death would visit mankind" -- there would be "food shortages, epidemics, pestilence and plagues" which would "sweep off tens of thousands of people" -- there were a mere 980 million human beings on Earth.  Today, there are nearly seven times that number -- 6.7 billion -- and while there are still problems of poverty and hunger, especially in parts of the Third World, for most of us, living standards and life expectancy have leapt forward, says Brendan O'Neill, editor of Spiked.

Medicinal Uses

The ripe fruit, because of its mucilaginous character, is eaten to sooth inflammation in laryngitis and pneumonia.  It is given as a treatment for diabetes mellitus, and as a decoction is gargled to relieve angina.  In Venezuela, the slightly unripe fruits are eaten to overcome intestinal disturbances.  In excess, they cause constipation.

A decoction of the rind, or of the leaves, is taken as a pectoral.  A decoction of the tannin-rich, astringent bark is drunk as a tonic and stimulant, and is taken to halt diarrhea, dysentery and hemorrhages, and as a treatment for gonorrhea and "catarrh of the bladder". The bitter, pulverized seed is taken as a tonic, diuretic and febrifuge.

Cuban residents in Miami are known to seek the leaves in order to administer the decoction as a cancer remedy.  Many high-tannin plant materials are believed by Latin Americans to be carcinostatic.  In Brazil, the latex of the tree is applied on abscesses and, when dried and powdered, is given as a potent vermifuge.  Elsewhere, it is taken as a diuretic, febrifuge and remedy for dysentery.

The latex obtained by making incisions in the bark coagulates readily and has been utilized as an adulterant of gutta percha.  It was formerly proposed as a substitute for wax on the shelves of wardrobes and closets.

The fruits are round, purple or green depending upon variety.  The rind has latex which can impart a bad taste to the fruit.  So care has to be taken while eating the fruit so that the rind does not come along with the pulp which is otherwise sweet and quite delicious.  The fruits also contain 5-7 hard flattened brown seeds.

Star apple is planted in home gardens.  It can be by seed, cuttings and layering.  There are basically two types or varieties, purple and green.  But some nursery men sell named varieties too which just seems to be for enhancing the price of their plants.

Star apple is highly sensitive to cold and should therefore not be planted at locations that are likely to get frost during winter.  It thrives best in fertile and well drained soils at open locations.

Star apple is a native of the lowlands of America.  However, some botanists contest this view and are of the opinion that this fruit had originated in West Indies and then reached South America.  It is basically a tropical plant.

Star apple is a round fruit with purple or dark green rind.  When the fruit is cut transversely, the pulp shows a star pattern.  That might be reason for its being named as “star apple” as it has nothing common with apple.

Star apple is an evergreen tree growing upto 20 m in height.  It has some exclusive features.  It is a very fast growing tree and can register even 3-4 feet increase in height during one season.  Secondly, it has very attractive foliage.  The leaves, which are alternate, simple, oval and entire, are 5-15 cm long.  The dorsal surface is lustrous green and the ventral surface shines with a golden tinge.  The trees appear very attractive when the wind rustles the foliage giving a strikingly beautiful effect.  The flowers are inconspicuous, whitish, grouped in dense axillary fascicles of 2-12.

in 2012, the vernal equinox moment is tomorrow, tuesday, 20 march, at 05:14 UTC

UTC + 8 = 13:14 in the philippines (please correct me if i'm wrong; time zones confuse me that's why i'm not a pilot.) ;D

An equinox happens each year at two specific moments in time (rather than two whole days), when there is a location (the subsolar point) on the Earth's equator, where the center of the Sun can be observed to be vertically overhead, occurring around March 20 and September 22 each year.

At an equinox, the Sun is at one of two opposite points on the celestial sphere where the celestial equator (i.e. declination 0) and ecliptic intersect.  These points of intersection are called equinoctial points: classically, the vernal point and the autumnal point.  By extension, the term equinox may denote an equinoctial point.

An equinox occurs twice a year, when the tilt of the Earth's axis is inclined neither away from nor towards the Sun, the center of the Sun being in the same plane as the Earth's equator.

The term equinox can also be used in a broader sense, meaning the date when such a passage happens.  The name "equinox" is derived from the Latin aequus (equal) and nox (night), because around the equinox, the night and day have approximately equal length.

The Vernal Equinox

Ah, spring! This season brings increasing daylight, warming temperatures, and the rebirth of flora and fauna.

The word equinox is derived from the Latin words meaning “equal night.”  The spring and fall equinoxes are the only dates with equal daylight and dark as the Sun crosses the celestial equator.  At the equinoxes, the tilt of Earth relative to the Sun is zero, which means that Earth’s axis neither points toward nor away from the Sun.  (However, the tilt of Earth relative to its plane of orbit, called the ecliptic plane, is always about 23.5 degrees.)

Education Secretary Bro. Armin Luistro, however, said that there was no need for a law or a memorandum that would limit the weight of school bags. He said school officials can just look into the issue themselves.

hey, bro, in case you didn't know (hampasabol!), the weight of schoolbags is due to the required books of the education department, written by people known to the department.  this is a practice since methusela.  it means money.  like those insurance companies lucky enough to be chosen by the gods, authorship of books sold directly to the government through the education department is also for those who know the gods.

my personal take on the iconic bloody saturday crying baby photo...

the real, real truth about the photograph will never be known.

there's no denying the second sino-japanese war; it's this dramatic photo that's in question.

there's no denying that a baby was injured, it's even easy to believe that thousands more babies were injured and had died, but when it says that the mother lay dead nearby, i can't see a single dead body anywhere in the iconic photo.

there's no denying that the u.s. eventually took china's side in that war; among many other reasons, this particular photo is said to have tugged at the american public's sympathy for the chinese.

one has to distinguish though between propaganda, emotional manipulation, and honest-to-goodness reporting.

as for the photographer...

Wong filmed more newsreels covering Japanese attacks in China, including the Battle of Xuzhou in May 1938 and aerial bombings in Guangzhou in June.  He operated under British protection, but continued death threats from Japanese nationalists drove him to leave Shanghai with his family and to relocate to Hong Kong. (wikipedia)
#35087
The Japanese professors argue that Wong added smoke to make the image more dramatic, but Rosholt wrote that the train station was still smoking when Wong arrived.  The Japanese nationalists do not say that the bombing did not happen, nor that Chinese civilians were not killed and wounded, but the presentation of the photograph as a fake allows for the easy interpretation that there are further falsehoods in the historical record.  In the article, Nobukatsu and Higashinakano do not mention the additional Wong photo published in Life magazine which shows the baby crying on a medical stretcher as it is given first aid by a Chinese Boy Scout. (wikipedia)
#35088
In 1999, the nationalist "Association for Advancement of Unbiased View of History", a group founded by Professor Fujioka Nobukatsu of Tokyo University, published an article entitled "Manipulation of Documentary Photos in China: Fanning Flames of Hate in the USA" in which Nobukatsu and Shūdō Higashinakano argue that the photograph shows a man setting first one then two children on the railroad tracks for the purpose of making a "pitiable sight" for American viewers, to ready American citizens for war against Japan. (wikipedia)
#35089
In 1956, Look magazine's Arthur Rothstein supported his earlier opinion that Wong borrowed the baby and staged the photograph.  In 1975, Life magazine featured the famous photo in a picture book, and wrote in the caption, "It has been said that this is staged, but it is evident from various points that this is no more than a fabricated rumour." (wikipedia)
#35090

Another of Wong's Shanghai baby photographs was published by Look magazine in December 1937.
#35091
Another of Wong's photos appeared in Look magazine on December 21, 1937, showing a man bent over a child of perhaps five years of age, both near the crying baby.  The man was alleged to be Wong's assistant Taguchi who was arranging the children for best photographic effect.  An article in The Japan Times and Mail said the man was a rescue worker who was posing the baby and the boy for the photographer.  Wong described the man as the baby's father, coming to rescue his children as the Japanese aircraft returned following the bombing.  Japanese propagandists drew a connection between what they claimed was a falsified image and the general news accounts by U.S. and Chinese sources reporting on the fighting in Shanghai, with the aim of discrediting all reports of Japanese atrocities. (wikipedia)
#35092
now let's hear it from the other side...

Allegations of falsehood

At the time, Japanese nationalists called the photograph a fake, and the Japanese government put a bounty of $50,000 on Wong's head: an amount equivalent to $810,000 in 2012.  Wong was known to be against the Japanese invasion of China and to have leftist political sympathies, and he worked for William Randolph Hearst who was famous for saying to his newsmen, "You furnish the pictures and I'll furnish the war" in relation to the Spanishâ€"American War. (wikipedia)
#35093
Reaction

The "unforgettable" image became one of the most influential photos to stir up anti-Japanese feeling in the United States.  A "tidal wave of sympathy" poured out from America to China, and the image was widely reproduced to elicit donations for Chinese relief efforts.  Catalyzed by the image, the U.S., the United Kingdom and France protested Japanese bombing of Chinese civilians in open cities.  Senator George W. Norris was influenced by the image, being convinced to abandon his longtime stance of isolationism and non-interventionismâ€"he railed against the Japanese as "disgraceful, ignoble, barbarous, and cruel, even beyond the power of language to describe."  Americans used terms such as "butchers" and "murderers" against the Japanese. Subsequent to Shanghai's surrender, IJN Admiral Kōichi Shiozawa said to a reporter from The New York Times at a cocktail party: "I see your American newspapers have nicknamed me the Babykiller."

The image was voted by Life readers as one of ten "Pictures of the Year" for 1937.  In 1944, Wong's newsreel sequence was used within the Frank Capra film The Battle of China. (wikipedia)

Wong sent the newsreel footage on a U.S. Navy ship to Manila and from there, the film was flown to New York City aboard a Pan American World Airways airliner.  Beginning in mid-September 1937, the newsreel was shown to movie theater audiences, estimated a month later to number 50 million people in the U.S. and 30 million outside of the U.S. and the still image of the crying baby was printed in Hearst Corporation newspapers and affiliates, some 25 million copies.  A further 1.75 million non-Hearst newspaper copies showed the image in the U.S., and 4 million more people saw it as a matte reproduction in other newspapers.  Some 25 million people saw it internationally.  It first appeared in Life magazine on October 4, 1937, at which point it was estimated that 136 million people had seen it.  On the facing page in Life magazine, another photograph showed the baby on a stretcher receiving medical care. more about the iconic war photo's photographer...

Wong never discovered the name of the burned and crying baby, whether it was a boy or a girl, or whether it survived.  The next morning, he took the film from his Leica camera to the offices of China Press, where he showed enlargements to Malcolm Rosholt, saying, "Look at this one!"  Wong later wrote that the next morning's newspapers reported that some 1,800 people, mostly women and children, had been waiting at the railway station, and that the IJN aviators had likely mistaken them for a troop movement.  The Shanghai papers said that fewer than 300 people survived the attack.  On October, Life magazine reported about 200 dead.
