Did you Know .... Tree FAQs:

"Over the course of 50 years, a single tree can generate $31,250 of oxygen, provide $62,000 worth of air pollution control, recycle $37,500 worth of water, and control $31,500 worth of soil erosion. "

“The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.”Anonymous
"One tree can absorb more than a ton of carbon over its lifetime."
Via:  U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

Trees reduce storm water runoff and erosion, and they remove harmful chemicals from the soil to prevent them from running into streams and rivers.

Ty bedo..... For the information to all govt. employee, and nakarecord sa imong file  is your rate three year back. Pananglit nagretire ka ang basihan sa imong pension is  your rate three year back , instead of the average for the last three years. Ang pagtuo sa mga nagretire na is that the basis of computing the monthly pension is your rate three years back. It's  not. Based on the existing guidline, the computation of the monthly pension of a govt. employee is 90% of (AMC) average monthly compensation  for the last three year if your have rendered more than 30 years of continouos service  and 80% if less that 30 years.

SEcondly, they are always last in posting our loan payments. Ang nahitabo, nag additional ka ug surcharges fee. Bisan ug remitted na sa DepEd ang among monthly payments sa loan based in the payslip, dili nila gi post  on time.

Thirdly,  total number of years is the service is lessen to three years becuase of  'no payments of premium or premium in arears.' Kulang daw ang mga teachers ug gibayad sa GSIS sa ilang monthly premium.

Lastly, ilang giundang ang survivor benefits  without further notice.

Hoping that GSIS can recover this worst crises at soonest time.

Hand-washing marks opening of schools today

MANILA, Philippinesâ€"“Lupang Hinirang,” then “Happy Birthday.”

After Monday’s flag ceremony, one of the first things some 2 million public school students of Metro Manila are going to learn is proper hand-washing to avoid the dreaded A(H1N1) flu virus.

“I have issued a memo to our 682 public schools in Metro to hold, if possible, simultaneous exercises in the morning on how to do proper hand-washing,” said Teresita Domalanta, Department of Education (DepEd) director for the National Capital Region.

The Department of Health (DoH) has advised people to wash their hands thoroughly with soap and water and if possible, for as long as a “Happy Birthday” song.

Students would be instructed to wash their hands upon reaching school, before and after meals, and after interacting with other people, Education Secretary Jesli Lapus told reporters Sunday at the Teachers’ Camp in Baguio City.

As long as water was flowing, students of public and private schools around the country should be protected from the swine flu virus, he said.

But if schools are not able to guarantee clean running water, there is an alternative.

Lapus said used bottled water containers could be filled and strung upside down in a row inside school toilets. The plastic bottle caps would be punctured to allow water to drip, so students could wash their hands.

A P1-billion allocation to establish water supply and fix school toilets was one of the DepEd’s weapons against the disease, he said, so reports confirming that 16 Filipinos have been infected with the virus should not alarm parents. Two of these patients are in the Cordillera Administrative Region.

Estrada: De Castro toughest rival in 2010

Claims VP, like him, has most ‘masa’ following

By Cynthia Balana, Fe Zamora
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 01:29:00 05/20/2009

MANILA, Philippinesâ€"Joseph Estrada sees a battle royal between himself and Vice President Noli de Castro if they both make a pitch for No. 1 in the 2010 presidential election.

Estrada Tuesday told the Philippine Daily Inquirer that only De Castro could rival him when it came to winning the support of the Filipino poor, who, he claimed, “comprise 80-90 percent of the voters.”

“Only Noli and I have masa (mass) appeal,” the deposed President said in a telephone interview. “I can feel that he also appeals to the D and E sectors.”

In case both he and De Castro seek the presidency, “Noli would be a tough candidate to beat,” Estrada said, adding:

“He would make for a formidable opponent.”

The two men have similar backgrounds. Both enjoyed massive media exposureâ€"Estrada as a movie star and De Castro as a radio/TV journalistâ€"before entering politics.

Estrada started his political career as a mayor of the municipality of San Juan and went on to become a senator. De Castro ran for senator as an independent candidate in 2001. He topped the race with more than 16 million votes.

De Castro was elected vice president in 2004. Like him, Estrada served as vice president for six years before running for president in 1998 and winning by a landslide.

Estrada, who was ousted in 2001, was tried for and convicted of plunder, and was swiftly pardoned by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, has been threatening to run again for president in 2010 if the opposition fails to unite behind a standard-bearer.

He has commissioned a “legal study” to determine whether he could do so, and was told, he said, that the constitutional ban on the reelection of presidents did not apply to him.

Substitution

De Castro himself has raised the sinister possibility of candidate substitution in the 2010 polls.

He called on lawmakers to revisit an election law provision that allows for the substitution of any candidate in the event of his/her death, disqualification, or withdrawal from an election

Lakas eyes De Castro-Teodoro ticket in 2010

By Michael Lim Ubac
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 20:12:00 05/26/2009

Filed Under: Eleksyon 2010, Elections, Politics

Close this MANILA, Philippines -- The tandem of Vice President Noli de Castro and Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. for the 2010 elections is in the works, Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri said Tuesday.

Zubiri, who is secretary general of the administration party Lakas Christian Muslim Democrats, said it was a “toss up” between De Castro and Teodoro for the nomination.

De Castro and Teodoro were invited to attend ceremonies formalizing the merger of the Lakas and the Kabalikat ng Malayang Pilipino (Kampi) parties at the Manila Hotel on Thursday, which will be presided over by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, Zubiri said.

While other presidential aspirants in the administration ticket are still being considered, Zubiri said: “But early indications are that the nomination for the administration’s bet would be a toss-up between Teodoro, who enjoys the party members’ support, and De Castro, who has much better ratings.”

“The vice president’s consistent showing in recent poll ratings is of prime consideration among party leaders. But Secretary Teodoro’s known competence, qualifications and track record as a three-term congressman and the country’s youngest defense chief are also being weighed carefully,” Zubiri said.

Without pre-empting the scheduled selection process, Zubiri said: “I must say both Vice President De Castro and Secretary Teodoro are enjoying slight advantage among other presidential hopefuls within the administration coalition.”

“The medium is the message,” said Ray Roquero, executive director of Lakas, when asked about the implication of the possible attendance of De Castro and Teodoro at the merger ceremony.

Practically all politicians allied with Arroyo are expected to attend the Manila Hotel event, Roquero said in a separate interview.

De Castro and Teodoro showed up at the Cabinet meeting on Tuesday wearing identical attire -- long-sleeved shirt with green stripes.

This easily caught the attention of the other Cabinet members, who then raised the hands of the two presidential aspirants as if to proclaim their tandem for the 2010 presidential derby.

“The ... shirts have striking similarity,” Secretary Gabriel Claudio, the presidential adviser on political affairs, said in a phone interview.

“Teodoro’s green stripes were lighter compared to Noli’s,” Claudio said, but he refused to say if this meant that Teodoro would eventually slide down as De Castro’s running mate.

Besides the signing ceremony, the first meeting of the national executive board between Lakas and Kampi will take place on Thursday.

Zubiri said the merger would solidify the ranks of the ruling coalition in the next year’s elections and significantly increase the chances of its standard bearer in winning the presidential derby “in the face of a divided opposition.”

Roquero said that the merger “gives birth to a political powerhouse likely to dominate the 2010 election and set the course of its politics and economy in the next decade.”

He said the merger was “more than a political marriage of convenience.”

“We are a party of principles and ideology. And we are proud of Lakas-Kampi’s program of government, because the bottom line is, politics must serve the people and articulate the national aspiration, not personal ambition and quest for power,” said Roquero.

                              TREES

by: Joyce Kilmer (1886-1918)

THINK that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the earth's sweet flowing breast;

A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

A tree that may in Summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;

Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.

Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.

Feature: "Malunggay", new oil source
By Mai Gevera

Davao City (28 November) -- Growing all over the country, Moringa or "malunggay" is now the latest promising plant whose parts all have commercial value.

Secura International Corporation president Danilo Manayaga presented in the Mindanao Investment Conference the many benefits of "malunggay" and how his company has commercialized the said plant.

Secura, one of the leading biotechnology companies in the Philippines led the search of the new uses and applications of malunggay oil.

It is found out that this oil is edible and closely resembles olive oil in its fatty acids composition. The oil content of seeds ranges between 30 to 40% by weight.

Being rich in monosaturated fatty acids, it is believed to be more stable to oxidative rancidity. Also, it is stable as deep frying oils and is usually healthier as it lowers risk of coronary heart disease.

The company sees this new discovery as an answer to eradicate poverty and malnutrition. Growing rapidly anywhere in a varying range of climatic condition, malunggay is potentially a new source of oil.

Another use of the malunggay is the Moringa meal or the residues left after water extraction of kernels. It has high amounts of true protein from its samples.

The malunggay meal water extract is used for purification of water, and the water extract is a viable replacement coagulant for chemicals such as aluminum sulphate.

The cationic polyelectrolytes neutralize the colloids in muddy or dirty water since the majority of these colloids have a negative electrical charge.

Manayaga then claimed that this protein can be used as non-toxic natural polypeptide for sedimenting mineral particles.

As well as organics in the purification of drinking water, for cleaning vegetable oil, or for sedimenting fibers in the juice and beer industries.

Secura is but one of the pioneering companies that processes Moringa leaves into dehydrated moringa leaf powder for the Food and Pharmaceutical markets.

It has acquired a new facility to crush moringa seeds to supply the US companies who signed a Letter of Intent with Secura for delivery by 2010 onwards. About 245 million liters of oil is ordered beginning 2010.

The Biofuel market is going to reach 12 billion liters per year in 2010 and 37 billion litters in 2016.

The said company is planting Moringa trees all over the country starting with 100,000 hectares plantation to fulfill the first client. (PIA) [top]

BACKYARD GARDENING

      by: Felix B. Daray

Backyard gardening relieves me of some stress and there is also joy and fun  “harvesting” the fruits from your extra time. I am experimenting with organic farming meaning. I don’t use pesticides and fertilizers.Select a space near your kitchen where it has direct sunlight anytime during  the day. Make a stand and elevate  a little higher. Fill the pots with humus soil or any soil from your compost pit. Plants two  pechay seeds for bigger pots and one seed for smaller pots by direct seeding. When the seeds starts sprouting, start watering the rice washed , (kinilis) and fish and meat washed, (hinugas) from your from kitchen. They contain nutrients and minerals good for the plants.

Early in the morning, I inspect if there are  tiny holes or scratches on the leaves. If there are, your leaves are infested with small pin worms or cutworms. With the use of a stick and a puller, I  removed all the worms. Their  greenish black color is so visible with our eyes. It is so fun looking, then killing  the crawling  worms. I inspect all the pechay plants to avoid serious infestation.

After 30 days, I start harvesting my pechay. I harvest two to three leaves per plants or depends on the kitchen needs. Do not uproot the plants. Pechay will grow  up to four months. When you see  flowers in the bud, its time to uproot the pechay and replace the pot with new humus soil. Replant it again. This is called soil disposable method of farming.

My potted pechay plants are placed near the kitchen so that easy  to water the rice washed , the  fish and meat washed . It is so accessible to  other members of the family to see if there are worms infesting the leaves. They also enjoy removing the  worms. They say, “ hi. .hi…hi. .hi…”  and giggle as they pull the worms.  Pechay plants are not infested with virus diseases.

With my fifteen potted pechay ,  I can harvest fresh leaves free from pesticide contamination all the year round. Sometimes, I share my harvest to the friends and neighbor.

We never grew tired of eating “pechay” during meals for about a week - pechay with corned beef, pechay with sardines, pechay with ground meat, tinulang isda with pechay and etc.

Backyard gardening  is now my pastime, early  in the morning and the late afternoon. It is pesticide  and fertilizer free. Generally, it’s environmental.

Lawmaker blasts GSIS computerization program
By Dino Maragay Updated April 29, 2009 11:15 AM

MANILA, Philippines â€" A congressman has hit the computerization program of the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS), calling it a “failure” for its inability to provide better and more-efficient service to its members.

According to Rep. Raul Gonzalez Jr., the GSIS continues to be hounded by service-related complaints five years after embarking on its massive computerization program.

"In fact, there is a move by GSIS officials to pin the blame for all the confusion and inconveniences being encountered by GSIS members today to a glitch in their computer program," Gonzalez said.

In filing House Resolution 1048, Gonzalez urges fellow lawmakers to conduct a probe on GSIS’ current computerization program under efforts to spot the alleged “glitches” in its system.

The GSIS massive computerization program kicked off in May 2003 aiming to provide better and more efficient service to its members. It entails the wholesale upgrading of computer hardware, installation of new software programs, overhauling of systems and procedures, reconciliation of manual and computer data, updating its premium contributions file and posting of its members' loan repayments.

Many professionals who work with people with eating disorders recognize the widespread use of caffeine -- whether in coffee or diet soft drinks -- as a low-calorie way of feeling energetic. Many people use diet soft drinks to try to avoid feeling hungry, or to manage their hunger without eating. It's possible to become physically addicted to caffeine, as people who have tried to give up coffee find out when they have headaches.

Colas also contain carbonated water, high-fructose corn syrup or sucrose, caramel color, phosphoric acid and natural flavors. A 12-ounce can contains 140 calories, which come from the 39 grams of sugar. It also contains 50 milligrams of sodium. Diet colas contain aspartame in place of the corn syrup, but otherwise the ingredients are similar.

I don't believe that drinking soft drinks or diet soft drinks in moderation is a serious health problem. Moderation means no more than one or two 12-ounce servings per day. Moderation also means that we drink other beverages, such as water, milk and juice. If soft drinks replace beverages that contain needed nutrients, then it's no longer moderation.

The right place for disputed first Mass in Limasawa

TACLOBAN CITY -- A new twist in an officially settled historical dispute again requires action from authorities.

On March 31, the 486th anniversary of the recorded First Mass in the Philippines in 1521 was commemorated by two claimantsâ€"Limasawa town in Southern Leyte and Butuan City on behalf of its old Masao District.

The decades-old Limasawa vs Masao dispute was officially settled in March 1998 when the National Historical Institute (NHI) ruled for Limasawa. But this verdict did not deter the pro-Masao group from persisting with their claim and performing parallel ceremonies.

The NHI decision ignored another historical error by tacitly upholding the belief that the First Mass was held in the southeastern coast of Limasawa, in the vicinity of the present Barangay Magallanes.

Legacy

A legacy of this error, the new Shrine of the First Holy Massâ€"an edifice made of bricks and polished concrete that was inaugurated two years agoâ€"sits on top of a hill overlooking the barangay.

Vicente C. de Jesus, an independent scholar who strongly supports the Butuan claim, has criticized the NHI commission that looked into the issue for allegedly dismissing an eyewitness account that implied a western site of the First Mass on the island recorded as Mazaua in 16th-century documents.

The witness was Gines de Mafra, a member of both the Magellan expedition in 1521 and the Villalobos expedition in 1543. He had dropped by Limasawa on both occasions. In 1543, he met again the same chief, presumably Rajah Kolambu, who received Magellan in 1521.

De Mafra’s account had remained hidden in a Madrid archive for 375 years before it was found and published in 1920. It mentioned that the Magellan fleet anchored in Mazaua at “a good harbor on its western side, and is inhabited.”

De Mafra’s claim is corroborated by a map made by Antonio Pigafetta, chronicler of the Magellan expedition, according to De Jesus. The map in the Nancy-Libri-Beinecke-Yale codex is said to show a cross in one of two hills facing the sea southwest of the island.

The Pigafetta map in the Beinecke manuscript shows the cross on the upper hill near the sea. The lower hill, drawn in the middle of the land mass at the bottom of the map, does not have the cross symbol.

Ships’ movement

A single sentence in the popular James Robertson translation of the Pigafetta account could give the First Mass event to western Limasawa. It said: “In the afternoon we went in the ships [and anchored] near the dwelling of the king.”

This meant sailing the ships from their initial anchorage off the southeastern coast and rounding the island at the south toward the acantilado (deep) waters of the western cove fronting Barangay Triana, the oldest settlement and present town proper of Limasawa.

Such overlooked movement of Magellan’s ships could corroborate De Mafra’s account.

The locals had always believed that Triana was a word play on Tirana, the name of the legendary Bisayan queen who was known as one of the five wives of Rajah Bankaw.

But Fr. Peter Schreurs, MSC, who had published two books that favor the Limasawa claim, told this writer in a 1999 letter that Triana was a suburb of the old Spanish capital of Seville, across the Guadalquivir River, in which main church Magellan was wedded to Beatriz Barbosa.

Thus, it now seems that it was Magellan himself who designated the name Triana to the settlement in Limasawa.

Affirmatory proof

An aerial photograph of Limasawa Island shows the two prominent hills that affirm the landmarks on Pigafetta’s map in the Beinecke manuscript. The hill on which Magellan and his crew erected a cross after the Easter Sunday Mass in 1521 was presumably the upper hill marked with a cross on the old map, and the one nearest to Triana and overlooks the present town proper from the north.

Perhaps now is the time for the NHI to consider issuing a complementary amendment to their verdict related to the First Mass being held in Limasawa. The supporting evidence strongly suggest that this event happened in the vicinity of the present Barangay Triana and not in Barangay Magallanes, and that the cross was erected on the hill overlooking Triana and nowhere near the present shrine southeast of the island.

With the official correction, it is hoped that the fifth centennial of the Limasawa event in 2021, or 14 years from now, could be celebrated in its right place on the island.

Sex Good For Mind, Body
Doctors Report Link Between Love, Health
Posted: 1:56 p.m. EST January 13, 2004

Time magazine is heating up newsstands this week with a sexy cover story and interesting articles inside about how sex is good for the mind and body.

Doctors said there are some links between love and health. Researchers said the benefits of sex include greater longevity, decreased risk of heart disease, weight loss, and pain relief.

Researchers said the reason for some of these benefits is the hormone called oxytocin. Oxytocin, which controls uterine muscles during childbirth, goes up five times higher during orgasm.

The hormone can possibly fight depression and anxiety, boost the immune system, fight cancer and it acts as a type of "rehealer" by helping injuries to heal faster.

Studies show sex is also exercise that burns about 200 calories -- like running for 30 minutes. But doctors say they don't really know if sex is equal to walking a mile -- that kind of research hasn't been done.

Swine flu is not a deadly disease. Don't be afraid.

Why does the swine flu seem to be more deadly in Mexico?
By David DobbsPosted Monday, April 27, 2009, at 3:20 PM ET

Click here to read more from Slate on the swine flu.

Two weeks ago, no one had heard of this strain of swine flu. Now it's on every front page and almost every continent. Is this the deadly global pandemic we've been worrying about?

Certainly there's cause for sober concern, if not alarm. For of the two qualities vital to a nasty pandemicâ€"to spread readily and to be deadlyâ€"this flu, a brand-new strain of swine flu, or H1N1, seems to possess the first: Evidence is strong that it spreads readily among humans. In that sense, it's an inversion of the bird flu. Bird flu terrifies infectious disease experts because it kills about half the humans who get itâ€"but it has so far failed to develop the ability to jump easily from person to person.

This swine flu, meanwhile, does seem to spread easily by airborne transmission. But how deadly is it? Despite the 100-plus deaths in Mexico, we don't really know. And that's why epidemiologists are working frantically to figure out the Mexico mystery: Why do the death rates there appear to be so much higher than those in the United States? In Mexico, it has reportedly killed about 100 of the 1,600 official suspected cases; elsewhere, it has appeared to take a far milder course, with zero deaths out of approximately 300 instances. There are several possible explanations for this discrepancyâ€"any one, two, all, or none of these ideas could shed light on how deadly this virus might prove. In order of ascending likelihood for Mexico's higher mortality:
