More die of heartbreak than anything else. Yet, there are no mass movements against heartbreak or demonstrations in the streets.
â€"Saul Bellow

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the publication of Saul Bellow’s great novel, More Die of Heartbreak.  As it turns out, Bellow’s quote above from the bookâ€"one of the last novels he penned before his own deathâ€"isn’t only poetically elegant, but also to a certain extent scientifically accurate.

The first study to investigate the question of whether people can actually die of heartbreak was published in the British Medical Journal in 1969. Participants consisted of  4,500 widowers, 55 years or older, tracked over the span of nine years. Researchers found that the risk of dying in the first six months after losing a spouse was 40% higher than average. (Source:Scienceline.org)

More recent studies, including a few especially compelling ones conducted at Johns Hopkins University and published in the New England Journal of Medicine, have confirmed the findings: a person’s risk of death from heart attack significantly increases following a loved one’s death. In one study, researchers tracked 1.5 million people aged between 35 and 84, and found that, in the six months after losing a spouse, the risk of dying from a heart attack increased by 20 to 35%.

The linkage between heartbreak and death appears to hinge on a flood of stress hormones, including adrenaline, GH and cortisol. During one of the Johns Hopkins studies on what was dubbed ‘Broken Heart Syndrome’ (aka acute stress cardiomyopathy), patients with no history of heart disease showed signs of imminent heart failure but without the traditional symptoms of heart attack. The one commonality between them was that they’d all received bad or unexpected news just prior to being admitted to the hospital. Blood tests showed that their levels of stress hormones were several times higher than normal, and doctors determined that the hormonal deluge was handicapping their hearts’ ability to pump.

But there’s also a behavioral side to this. Recent studies have  found that after the loss of a loved one, the risk of dying from an accident, violence or drug and alcohol-related event drastically increases as well. In these cases, emotion triggers risky behavior leading to one’s demise.  Heartbreak in this sense is an indirect cause of death, and it’s much higher for men than women.

Even if heartbreak doesn’t kill you (and in all likelihood it won’t), it can predispose you to a buffet of other issues. Too-high stress hormone levels are directly linked to gastrointestinal problems, lowered immune response, anxiety disorders and depression.  People who have experienced the loss of a loved one or are coming off a break-up are more likely to get a cold, flu and pneumonia. And as everyone who has ever experienced a failed relationship knows, getting back to feeling like “you” takes some time.

Ending on a positive note, the realty is that even after the loss of a loved one, whether by death or break-up, the odds of recovery are in your favor. Fortunately, we’re resilient beasts, which is a good thing because we’re also gluttons for emotional punishment. Such is irrationality of love.

A 10-year-old girl who is offering everything in her piggy bank to get her 5-month-old puppy Meeko back may get her wish.

Burglars stole thousands of dollars worth of electronics from the Mabanags' San Jose, Calif., home Monday, but all 10-year-old Marissa Mabanag wants back is her shih tzu-yorkie mix puppy, Meeko. The family received a call Thursday morning that someone may have spotted the pup.

"I'm begging from a mother's heart to bring our puppy back to my daughter," Marissa's mother, Marie Mabanag told ABCNews.com. "That was a piece of her heart that is missing. It was an unnecessary pain to go through. We don't care about anything else. It's just the puppy for her."

Mabanag said Marissa is devastated over not having her puppy. In the short time that they've had him, the fifth grader has taught him tricks and takes care of him almost completely on her own. Mabanag tries to keep her busy to take her mind off of it, but Marissa spends most of her days staring at pictures of Meeko and crying, her mother said.

"I really do hope that those people who did it do have a heart or know a little girl that they can understand this to," Mabanag said. "When they stole the puppy I don't think they knew what they were doing. They were taking someone's heart."

In June, Meeko was a surprise for Mabanag's daughters on their last day of school. Marissa named her after the raccoon in the film "Pocahontas." It took Mabanag's daughters a long time to convince her to get a dog.

"I finally gave in to the girls and now he's ripped from our lives," Mabanag said.

The police and fire unions are throwing in a $5,000 reward for Meeko's return and Councilman Ash Kalra kicked the reward up to $6,000.

Burglars also stole designer purses, game consoles and bicycles from the Mabanags' home. They weren't able to get jewelry because all of that was stolen from their home last year. Mabanag, who is a teacher, blames budget cuts and not enough cops for the burglaries.

City council members Ash Kalra and Nancy Pyle told ABC affiliate KGO that the mayor and council majority's fiscal policies have gutted the police department and opened the door for burglaries to increase.

"Word is out on the street and they know it, that we don't have enough officers to patrol our streets, we don't even have a burglary unit, we don't have detectives," Kalra told KGO.

Police are investigating the Mabanags' case and the family is keeping their faith in finding their playful pup.

"It's not over yet," Mabanag told ABCNews.com. " I know it's not over yet."

A costume dubbed 'Ruined Spanish Fresco Monkey Jesus' debuted at Anime Weekend Atlanta last month. (Reddit)

In what could be called a Halloween costume work of art, "Ruined Spanish Fresco Monkey Jesus" is buzzing as one of this year's top getups.

Inspired by the gaffe of an elderly woman who failed to restore a 19th-century painting of the face of Jesus called "Ecce Homo," Reddit user Spinjump crafted his masterpiece, which he debuted at Anime Weekend Atlanta.

The creative mask captured perfectly the tilted and blurred face of the restored work, which some have renamed "Monkey Jesus." The costume's face even diminishes the nose and mouth of Christ, as in the botched restoration.

Images of the Halloween guise are making their way through the Internet today with the headline "2012 hot Halloween costume." On Twitter, some of the myriad of comments include:

•"Put away your Avengers outfits and Honey Boo Boo costumes. Best Halloween fancy dress this year, hands down." â€" Ryan Nelson, @RyanJohnNelson

•"Excellent Restored Jesus Fresco Costume Game over. Can't top this. I'm going as a ghost." â€" princess stomper, @princessstomper

•"The Hottest Halloween Costume for this year is clearly 'Monkey Jesus'. Though Steve Job's Ghost is still in the top 10." â€" Ryan G. Poirier, @RGPphotog

The failed restoration has caused a spike in visits to the church. So much so that the artist who blurred the face of Christ wants royalties.

She may not get any money, but she might get some satisfaction from knowing her handiwork has inspired a top costume.

Locals believe dead family members are still with them, even if they died hundreds of years ago, a family spokesman said.

Here's a more rational account from http://www.dailymail.co.uk/:

I wouldn't be seen dead in that! Mummies dug up for a change of wardrobe

If these mummies weren't already dead, they'd be dressed to kill.

That's because they've been dug up as part of a bizarre local ritual in a village in Indonesia that involves giving decomposed corpses a new look.

Family members of the deceased exhuming their ancestors' bodies and change their clothes as a way of remembering them. They then walk the dead around the village, almost like zombies.

Facts and Trivia / Ruchnoy Protivotankovyy Granatomyot
October 03, 2012, 05:54:46 PM
RPG-7

Ruchnoy Protivotankovyy Granatomyot is the most widely used anti-tank weapon in the world. Believed by many to have the title “Rocket-Propelled Grenade,” although descriptive, this is a backronym formed by the acronym for the official Russian title. Over 9,000,000 licensed RPG-7s have been made under the designs originating from the Soviet Union shortly after WW2. Still being produced today this iconic weapon is often seen next to its Soviet comrades the PKM and AK-47 as the low cost choice for effective warfare. Even the USA is now using it to train the Afghan National Police due to their abundance in the hills of Afghanistan. -- http://listverse.com/
