Valte appealed for a stop to the attacks on the websites and social media accounts of the weather service, the earthquake and tsunami monitoring service, and the social welfare agency, although she refused to disclose the extent of the damage, if any.

All the sites she mentioned appeared to be up and working yesterday afternoon.
“Many people are being affected by this. We are aware of the opposition to the Cybercrime Prevention Act. There are other ways to express opposition to it,” she said in an appeal aired over government radio.

Valte reported the attacks a day after Aquino defended the cybercrime law, which seeks to stamp out fraud, identity theft, spamming and child pornography.

The new law sparked a storm of protests from critics claiming it would severely curb Internet freedom and intimidate netizens into self-censorship.

One of law’s most controversial provisions imposes higher penalties on people who post defamatory comments online than those who commit libel in traditional media. â€" With Rhodina Villanueva, Jigger Jerusalem - By Marvin Sy (Philstar News Service, www.philstar.com)

The NUJP called the new law “unjust,” saying the only response to it is “resistance and defiance.”

“We call on all Filipino journalists and news organizations to stand up to this brazen attempt to wrest away our rights and liberties. We call on the Filipino people to stand up and defend our right to freedom of expression. Let us show this government that, whatever it may think, we ARE the boss,” NUJP said in a statement.

Cagayan de Oro second district Rep. Rufus Rodriguez, one of the co-authors of RA 10175, has maintained that the cybercrime law is meant to protect people from defamation.

With several petitions filed before the SC, Rodriguez believes the SC “will decide in favor of the law.”

“People have the freedom to express themselves as long as there is responsibility,” he said, adding the cybercrime law needs to be improved to assure that it would not curtail the freedom of the press.

As this developed, deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte confirmed yesterday that hackers angered by the controversial law have attacked government sites that deliver emergency information during natural disasters.

Last Friday, several media websites were redirected to the Facebook account of Pixel Offensive. It was the first time that media sites were hacked. All previous targets were government sites.
Anonymous Philippines and other hacktivist groups critical of the law have denied involvement in the hacking.

In Cagayan de Oro City, the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) urged media practitioners and ordinary citizens to stand against the controversial law.

In a statement titled “Matuwid na Daan Gone Astray” posted on the social networking site Facebook last Friday, the NUJP criticized Aquino whom it perceived to have “declared war on his own people.”

The largest organization of media practitioners has expressed dismay over Aquino’s statement that the online libel provision of RA 10175 should not be dropped.

“I do not agree that the provision on online libel should be removed. Whatever the format is, if it is libelous, then there should be some form of redress available to the victims,” Aquino was quoted as saying.
#34507
The DOJ and the groups opposing the cybercrime law are set to hold a dialogue on the matter on Oct. 9, the day the SC is expected to rule on whether to grant petitions seeking a temporary restraining order (TRO) against the new law. Ten petitions have so far been filed before the SC.

“The allies of the administration are all washing their hands over the cybercrime law fiasco and are enticing critics to just wait for the drafting of the IRR, as if this will cure the infirmities of the law. We are being misled to accept the law with minor tweaks, instead of junking the patently unconstitutional provisions,” Reyes said.

Bayan hopes the petitioners would unite and press the SC to resolve the case.
“We’re still hoping for a TRO on Tuesday. That would be a major victory indeed. Whatever happens at the SC, we have to continue to assert our rights, vigorously exercise our freedoms and hold accountable those who were instrumental in giving life to this law,” Reyes said.

Bayan has also thrown its support behind Pixel Offensive, a graphic arts collective which it said is being framed for the hacking of several media websites.

Critics call for more protest

Meanwhile, critics of the Cybercrime Prevention Act are calling for more protests after President Aquino said he would not drop the online libel provision of the law.

Militant group Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan), one of the petitioners in the case filed before the SC, urged people to show their disgust over what it described as Aquino’s “stubborn insistence to curtail freedom on the Internet.”

“Instead of listening to the people, Mr. Aquino justified why he signed the cybercrime law. He worries about being impeached if he doesn’t implement the new law, but is not worried about the snowballing people’s opposition. He looks at public opinion with disdain and thinks he can get away with the violation of our constitutional rights. That kind of arrogance will be his own undoing,” Bayan secretary-general Renato Reyes said.

The group also decried what it called “Palace deception” as allies of the President have called on critics to just wait for the drafting of the implementing rules and regulations (IRR) instead of protesting against the law.

These are Section 4, paragraph 4 which states that libel is a cybercrime if committed online; Section 5, which punishes any person who aids or abets the commission of any cybercrime, even if it is only through Facebook or Twitter; Section 6 which adopts the entire Penal Code for as long as the crime is committed through the use of information technology, but the penalty would be one degree higher; Section 7 which makes the same crime punishable both under the Penal Code and the Cybercrime Act; and Section 19 which authorizes the Department of Justice (DOJ) to restrict access to computer data found to be in violation of the new law or the so-called take down clause.

During the bill’s interpellation at the Senate, Santiago pushed for the requirement of a court order before any law enforcement agency could collect, seize or disclose data other than traffic data.

She cited a provision in the Constitution which guarantees absolute freedom of speech, specifically stating “no law shall be passed abridging the freedom of speech.”

“Notice that the constitutional language is absolute. However, jurists have tried to balance the absolute language with vital social needs,” she said.

However, she was not able to vote on the bill when it was taken up for third reading last January because she was on sick leave due to hypertension.

While she criticized the law for containing unconstitutional provisions, she said it could be an effective tool to prevent many cases of fraud, only if properly worded.

LGU Philippines / Miriam expects SC to reject cyber law
October 07, 2012, 10:41:05 AM
Philstar â€" 10 hours ago

MANILA, Philippines -  Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago expects the Supreme Court (SC) to declare the controversial Cybercrime Prevention Act unconstitutional for being too vague.

Speaking at a conference on business and economics at the Adamson University yesterday, Santiago said the newly enacted law limits free speech, and as such should be declared unconstitutional.

“I humbly predict that the Supreme Court will strike down the Cybercrime Act as unconstitutional. Otherwise, it will be a black, black day for freedom of speech,” she added.

Prior censorship, which she said is the effect of the Cybercrime Act, “violates the overbreadth doctrine and the vagueness doctrine in constitutional law.”

“Under the overbreadth doctrine, since the law is so broadly written that it deters free expression, then the Supreme Court will strike it down on its face, because of its chilling effect,” said Santiago, who holds a doctorate in juridical science and attended post-doctoral studies on Internet law at Harvard University.

She said the SC would rule against the law because of its vague provisions that impose punishment without specifying the punishable act. This, she said, violates due process.

October 07, 2012, 09:30:43 AM
A friend of mine recently told me that he never gives anything to beggars who approach him in the streets. He then held me captive to an impassioned defense of his so-called "principle", too long-winded and elaborate for me to repeat here (or, for that matter, for me to have remembered fully).

Please share your thoughts. Thanks.

Every year in the Miami-Dade County Animal Service 37,000 dogs and cats are abandoned. On average 20,000 of those don't make it out of the shelter and are euthanized. If you do the math, that turns out to be more than 54 animals per day being killed because of over population and abandonment.

But this is not a problem that only affects Miami-Dade. The Animal Care and Control in New York city received more than 31,000 animals in 2011, a number that has gone down by 35% since 2004 thanks to the shelter's outreach program.

In order to generate awareness about the problem that animal shelters face across the country, Michael Rosenberg, founder of Pets' Trust Miami, an initiative to improve animal welfare, decided to live in a shelter cage for a weekend.

Just like an abandoned dog, he was dropped off at the animal service center in Miami-Dade today and will be released on Sunday. Rosenberg will spend his entire time there inside a concrete chain-link cage just like any surrendered dog would.

Cesar Milan, best known as 'the dog whisperer', sent a support message for Rosenberg adding that he hopes he is 'the last one inside that cage'.

Rosenberg's efforts don't stop there. Pets' Trust Miami managed to include a pet-friendly question in the November 6 ballot of the Miami-Dade Comission. The proposal says that the owner of a $100,000 property would pay about $10 to finance low-cost spay/neuter clinics. -- http://abcnews.go.com/

Hmm, from my Guoanbu contacts, I got the following faded picture of Islander as a child somewhere in Fujian province just before her fateful crossing of the South China Sea (now known as the West Philippine Sea) and eventual adoption by a childless Balingsya couple during the tenure of our own President Carlos Garcia...

According to my sources she was originally a girl, yes. They, understandably, could not vouch for what transformation she could have undergone after she crossed into the Philippine side of Scarborough Shoal...

1 Slaughter of Innocents

Embarrassment: Mountain Meadows Massacre

In the Mountain Meadows Massacre of 1857, a gang of Mormons banded up to attack a wagon train of families from Arkansas on their way to California. The aggressors pretended to be Native Americans so they could achieve a political goal, and when they feared discovery by the victims, murdered about 120 men, women, and children over the age of seven in order to avoid leaving witnesses to testify as to who was really behind the attacks.

These embarrassments add up to a damning conclusion: Joseph Smith managed to string along his followers for decades, and even today, churches and communities exist that believe these ridiculous fantasies. The embarrassments listed above are just the beginning for the Mormon community, who would just as soon explain away each reason to doubt their deeply-held convictions â€" a sad state of affairs for any logical human being.

2 Stolen Rituals

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKG5kMnZZcM#

Embarrassment: Stolen temple rituals

Symbols and rituals for Mormon temples were stolen from Freemasonry. Some of these rituals include the symbols on the “magic underpants” worn by Mormons, a secret handshake that Freemasons exchange somehow becoming the handshake people must give angels in order to enter the highest heavenly kingdom, and more. Joseph Smith was expelled from the Freemasons for this theft, though he still tried to appeal to the Masons in the mob that came to kill him by giving the first words of a Mason signal of distress, abandoning his created faith in his last moments.

3 False Witnesses

Embarrassment: Witnesses were excommunicated

Two groups of witnesses supposedly saw the translation of the Book of Mormon, yet they were all excommunicated after disagreements with Smith. It seems the first group of three witnesses found it too much of a hoax to stay in the church after witnessing this, so a second group needed to be found. These eight men signed statements claiming to have seen and handled the golden plates, though it was later revealed that they hadn’t actually done so. In other words, Smith forced them to lie about seeing the plates.

4 Lost Text

Embarrassment: First translation mysteriously lost

The Book of Mormon, when first translated, was given to a friend who supposedly lost them. Joseph Smith should have been able to retranslate them from his “golden tablets” â€" the original source of this book â€" and yet he found an excuse to avoid this. He said that they were not allowed to be in the Book of Mormon anymore, clearly because if the original were to be found and compared with the new translation, the inconsistencies in the text he made up would be discovered. Pictured above are seven lines that Smith claimed he copied directly from the mysterious (and missing) golden tablets on which he said the Book of Mormon was written.

5 Polygamy

Embarrassment: Polygamy â€" now it’s valid, now it isn’t?

The first forty years of Mormonism involved plural marriage, a form of harem-keeping by men who were taught by Joseph Smith that it was a doctrine worth following. Smith then proceeded to marry half a dozen women in 1843, yet he denied to the public that he practiced this polygamy. He had at least forty wives in his lifetime, some of whom were thirteen years old, and Brigham Young had fifty wives. Now, the modern view is that polygamy is unacceptable, which seems to be a revelation brought about by the illegality of polygamy. The Mormon god has changed his mind, it seems!

6 Mormon Underwear

Embarrassment: Magical underpants

The temple garments worn by Mormons supposedly provide protection against temptation and sins. They are even credited with saving people’s lives during natural disasters in Mormon urban legends, which is ridiculous to most people without supernatural beliefs in magical clothes. They are seen as sacred and cannot be removed unless absolutely necessary, but then should be put on again as soon as possible. One wonders whether Mitt Romney’s underwear is “Mormon-approved.”

7 Plagiarism

Embarrassment: Plagiarism of the King James Bible

There are specific quotes in the Book of Mormon that are found in the King James Bible and other modern works that Joseph Smith had access to. For example, Alma 5:52 is identical almost word-for-word to Matthew 3:10. Smith plagiarized 478 verses from the book of Isaiah, and 201 are identical to the King James Bible. If this book were truly divinely inspired, it wouldn’t have been pieced together from pieces of the books that Smith read!

8 Missing History

Embarrassment: No archaeological evidence

The claims made by the Book of Mormon mention specific tools, technologies, crops, and animals that simply didn’t exist in those regions at the times stated. For example, horses, cattle, sheep, and swine weren’t roaming between 2500 BC and 400 AD, as claimed. Most of these species were introduced in 1493 by Christopher Columbus. Similarly, barley and wheat weren’t grown, iron and steel weren’t being produced, and systems of weight and measurement such as the Mormons claim existed simply aren’t supported by archaeological evidence.

9 Martyr or Coward?

Embarrassment: Smith’s death â€" suicide, heroic, or somewhere in between?

Some say that Joseph Smith, founder of Mormonism, fought back bravely against attackers, but others believe he committed suicide by jumping out of a window. A few things are certain â€" he shot and was shot, and at some point, fell out of a window. He used a smuggled pistol to shoot at a mob and did not die a martyr’s death in any case, as is claimed by many Mormons. There is quite a stark contrast between Christian martyrs who â€" in virtually every case â€" trusted God enough to welcome their death and Joseph Smith who so lacked belief in his own “religion” that he was terrified of dying.

10 False Book

Embarrassment: Book of Abraham

The Book of Abraham, one of the central texts of Mormonism, is a poor translation of Egyptian papyri. Fragments of the original text were found and studied by renowned historians with credentials and experience. These experts discovered the fragments to be scraps of funeral spells used to help spirits move on to the afterlife. There were no resemblances between the text and the supposedly divinely-inspired translation that Smith invented. As well as the mainstream Mormon church, other related churches, such as the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, still believe it to be a canon work that represents the will of God. Apologists for the Book claim that modern Egyptologists are simply translating the text wrong â€" basically meaning that Joseph Smith is the only human to have lived who understood Egyptian hieroglyphics correctly (aside from the Egyptians themselves of course).

Mormon is allegedly a prophet-historian who was the native American believed by Mormons to have written the Book of Mormon â€" the main religious text of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormonism). Mormonism is a religion less than two centuries old, but in this short time it has managed to accrue a long list of embarrassments which the church leaders would prefer were kept silent. These embarrassments range from textual inaccuracies to scandals in the life of the founder, Joseph Smith. Of all religions, it’s difficult to believe this one has caught on given the long list of embarrassments that follows! Mormonism and its faults is a particularly interesting topic at present given that Mitt Romney is a Mormon and he is campaigning against President Obama in the upcoming US Presidential elections. It will be interesting to see whether Romney 2012 becomes President Romney â€" only time will tell.

Facts and Trivia / Spot the owl
October 06, 2012, 09:10:06 AM
Gorgeous as it is, nature is the place where everyone has to fight for itself to survive. This is why most of them have developed some amazing camouflage techniques to be able to hide while resting or nesting.

Feathered animals have mastered the art of disguise of three different types: they either use color, marking or posture camouflage. A snowy owl, for example, can hardly be seen in winter; some birds pick the trees with a bark that resembles their feather patterns; and some even position themselves in a certain way to blend in the surroundings.

This time we put together a very deceptive selection of owl camouflage. These birds are real forest ninjas. If you think you see nothing but a tree or a rock in the picture, take a closer look and you’re in for a surprise! -- http://www.boredpanda.com/
