* Four defendants are listed in the case. Midwest Maternal & Fetal Medicine, Signature Medical Group, Webb and Moore are being sued for unspecified damages in a wrongful death and medical negligence lawsuit.

* The statute of limitations for medical negligence cases is two years in Missouri. That time would have expired in March 2013.

A Missouri couple filed a lawsuit Sept. 28 against four defendants for a birth gone horribly wrong. The New York Daily News reports Friday that Arteisha Betts and Travis Ammonette of Florissant, Mo., claim their newborn son, Kaden Travis Ammonette, died while in the birth canal. The baby's head was allegedly decapitated from its neck when the doctor tried pulling the baby out of the birth canal.

* The media report claims court documents reveal Dr. Susan Moore told the couple in February 2011 their baby would have to be born with a Caesarian section because his abdomen was too large. The delivering doctor allegedly refused to perform a Caesarian and instead chose for a vaginal birth. The attending doctor, Gilbert Webb, then supposedly did not allow the couple to go to another hospital.

* Courthouse News Service states Betts and Ammonette went to St. John's Mercy Hospital on March 22, 2011, when the mother started having contractions. She was 28 weeks and five days into her pregnancy.

* The lawsuit alleges Kaden's head came out normally, but the abdomen got stuck in the birth canal. The doctor then allegedly tried traction on the baby's head and then the head became separated from the cervical spine.

Dr. Ivy Alvarez, of the Animal Wellness Veterinary Hospital, said when the surgery team got hold of Kenneth, the condition of the dog’s face was beyond description.

Yet despite the cruelty that Kenneth suffered, Alvarez said the dog remained sweet.

“I almost cried when I first saw him. But despite what happened to him, he was really sweet,” said Alvarez.

Alvarez said the eight-man surgery team was able to reattach the portion of Kenneth’s nose, palate and skin that had been apparently hacked off but not completely that they clung to Kenneth’s face.

Dr. Luis Guillermo Zialcita, who headed the surgery team, said Kenneth would recover in less than two weeks.

“He will eat normally and live normally,” said Zialcita. “We assure you that nothing significant will change in the dog’s life,” he said.

The two groups that raised funds for Kenneth’s surgeryâ€"CSDCI and IROâ€"are demanding that the human who abused Kenneth be made to answer for the brutality. “Kenneth is an example of a victim of people,” said Gilliam Roque, head of CSDCI.

Veterinarians who examined Kenneth said his snout must have been slashed by a sharp object. At the time Janjan found Kenneth, according to an assessment made by veterinarians, the dog had been wandering for more than two weeks with the untreated wound.

The plight of Kenneth attracted online attention after Janjan’s nephew, Michael, took pictures of the dog and posted these in his Facebook account last Oct. 3.

The pictures not only generated outrage among animal welfare activists, but also led to a campaign initiated by two groupsâ€"the Cebu South Dog Club Inc. (CSDCI) and the Island Rescue Organization (IRO)â€"to raise funds for Kenneth’s treatment.

The campaign led to surgery for Kenneth last Oct. 8 at the Animal Wellness Veterinary Hospital on Gov. M. Cuenco Avenue in Banilad, Cebu City.

A team of eight doctors and three veterinary assistants supervised the four-hour surgery on Kenneth’s face.

CEBU CITYâ€"A dog so mangled that part of its snout hung under its jaw when it was found had been operated on and is now recovering, its case serving as an example of man’s capacity for brutality and kindness and how animals are often at the receiving end of these.

Now known as “Kenneth,” the dog was found last Sept. 29 wandering the streets of Talisay City by a pedicab operator, Janjan Solon.

When he was found, Kenneth was so disfigured that it was difficult to describe how he looked like.

Janjan took the dog and gave him the name Kenneth after the Cebuano word kinit-an, meaning found.

Paul Ryan didn’t prepare for Laughing Joe Biden in debate prep

DANVILLE, Ky. -- Paul Ryan prepared for several possibilities during his weeks-long debate practice with a Joe Biden stand-in, but arguing with a laughing opponent wasn't one of them.

"The laughter certainly was not something that we expected," Mitt Romney campaign spokesman Michael Steel told Yahoo News after the debate. "On the policy front, I think it was precisely what we expected. I didn't hear any new attacks really. There were a few statistics that were more of a reach than usually, but pretty typical of the vice president in the limited amount that we've seen him in public in the past few months."

During the vice presidential debate here Thursday, Biden regularly smiled and laughed out loud while Ryan was speaking, and often chuckled at times when it wasn't clear what he was smiling about.

"There was a lot of incredulity" among Romney-Ryan campaign staffers watching the debate in Kentucky, Steel said. "What is he doing? Why is he doing that? Does he know there's reaction shots? Several times it was just really inappropriate. Several times it seemed like he wasn't listening."

In the weeks before Thursday's debate with Biden, Ryan prepared behind closed doors with members of Romney's staff and with former solicitor general Ted Olson, who played the role of Biden. Olson, who studied Biden's policy positions and debate style, channeled the vice president during debate prep and would interrupt Ryan during practice sessions, Steel said, but the laughing tactic was not something they specifically rehearsed.

President Obama's campaign strategists denied that Biden's laughter was part of a premeditated strategy, even if it appeared to be a tactic intended to get into Ryan's head during the debate.

"It was the vice president having some fun," Obama campaign manager Jim Messina said. "It was the vice president being a fierce advocate for the middle class, and I think that's who the vice president is."
