Willoughby and his team tested the cardiovascular systems of 30 young adults one hour before and one hour after consuming one 250ml can of sugar-free Red Bull.

The results showed “normal people develop symptoms normally associated with cardiovascular disease” after consuming the drink, created in the 1980s by Austrian entrepreneur Dietrich Mateschitz based on a similar Thai energy drink.

Red Bull is banned in Norway, Uruguay and Denmark because of health risks listed on its cans, but the company last year sold 3.5 billion cans in 143 countries. One can contains 80 mg of caffeine, around the same as a normal cup of brewed coffee.

The Austria-based company, whose marketing says “Red Bull gives you wings,” sponsors Formula 1 race cars and extreme sport events around the world, but warns consumers not to drink more than two cans a day.
Rychter said Red Bull could only have such global sales because health authorities across the world had concluded the drink was safe to consume.

But Willoughby said Red Bull could be deadly when combined with stress or high blood pressure, impairing proper blood vessel function and possibly lifting the risk of blood clotting.

“If you have any predisposition to cardiovascular disease, I’d think twice about drinking it,” he said.

Red Bull bad for your health, says new study

Health& Living
Wednesday, 20 August 2008
Written by Rob Taylor

CANBERRA - Just one can of the popular stimulant energy drink Red Bull can increase the risk of heart attack or stroke, even in young people, Australian medical researchers said on Friday.

The caffeine-loaded beverage, popular with university students and adrenaline sport fans to give them “wings,” caused the blood to become sticky, a pre-cursor to cardiovascular problems such as stroke.

“One hour after they drank Red Bull, (their blood systems) were no longer normal. They were abnormal like we would expect in a patient with cardiovascular disease,” Scott Willoughby, lead researcher from the Cardiovascular Research Centre at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, told the Australian newspaper.

Red Bull Australia spokeswoman Linda Rychter said the report would be assessed by the company’s head office in Austria.

“The study does not show effects which would go beyond that of drinking a cup of coffee. Therefore, the reported results were to be expected and lie within the normal physiological range,” Rychter told Reuters.

cat food

a professional advice i got lately is to vary cat food.  canned, dry cat food interspersed with human food (without bones, please) would be better for cats.  i lost two cats to urinary tract problems because i limited their diet to dry cat food.

constant access to fresh drinking water is a must.

simple does it; one side for food, the other for water

sing a happy song, bai tigs.  from now on you're a happy friend of the following happy cats (on their litter box or on their way):

bootsie?
#34128
simple cat litter boxes and scoops (available in pet stores):

in small spaces, these may be placed in the rest room or, in the case of boarders, one's private room.  rest assured, your place won't smell if you use the following as cat litter (the sand):

my favorite cat litter brand: catsan.  it's japanese, and very efficient.

kun naa ka ani nga first line of defense, you can be sure your kitty won't mess your place.  motuod gyod tawon ni sila sa ilang rest room (cat litter box).  just clean it effortlessly every day by scooping out only the solids.  (as if you need telling, sorry.)  i would presume that you need to raise your cat indoors 100% if you're living in manila, unless your place has a safe enclosure of a fence or it's a farm like racquel's.
#34129
last resort: if you're in manila, pm me your mobile number, and if we're near enough, 'll help you make arrangements for that kitty, including providing you with tips on keeping an indoor cat (feeders, diet, cat litter box, etc.)  meantime, i'll post in this thread these things, if you don't mind.

please bear in mind that a healthy pet means a healthy human.

i beg you not to let that kitty go.  if you must, please go to the website of the philippine animal welfare society and ask how you can have the cat adopted in a good home.  i believe though that the kitty is already home with you.
#34130
kun makalugar ka unta, bai tigs, dad-a sa vet nang one and only mingming for the proper vaccinations, i.e. feline pneumonia, rabies ug distemper, apil na deworming.  you can even go to the nearest barangay health center, though their services are more often limited to anti-rabies vaccination.

meantime, sigeha lang ug trapo ang mata ug moistened cloth or soft tissue, and see to it that the kitty has constant access to fresh drinking water.
#34131
kun motaon kanunay ang iring, labi na ang mga kittens, gapasabot na nga naa silay colds.  untreated, the colds can develop into fatal feline pneumonia.  kadaghanan iring ug kittens nga layaw exposed to the elements, labi na karon nga arang inita sa ato, unya wa pa gyoy nutrition ug clean source of water.

this is one religious gesture of reverence that i so love to do and won't let go (just like our cultural and traditional kissing of the hand as a gesture of respect for elders).  sadly, i can't do it anymore without making a scene.  something weak with my knees makes it necessary either for someone else to help me get up or, barring that, i use both hands, flat on the floor, to get up.  thus i have to be content with simply bowing my head.

Cat's Dream

Pablo Neruda

How neatly a cat sleeps,
sleeps with its paws and its posture,
sleeps with its wicked claws,
and with its unfeeling blood,
sleeps with all the rings--
a series of burnt circles--
which have formed the odd geology
of its sand-colored tail.

I should like to sleep like a cat,
with all the fur of time,
with a tongue rough as flint,
with the dry sex of fire;
and after speaking to no one,
stretch myself over the world,
over roofs and landscapes,
with a passionate desire
to hunt the rats in my dreams.

I have seen how the cat asleep
would undulate, how the night
flowed through it like dark water;
and at times, it was going to fall
or possibly plunge into
the bare deserted snowdrifts.
Sometimes it grew so much in sleep
like a tiger's great-grandfather,
and would leap in the darkness over
rooftops, clouds and volcanoes.

Sleep, sleep cat of the night,
with episcopal ceremony
and your stone-carved moustache.
Take care of all our dreams;
control the obscurity
of our slumbering prowess
with your relentless heart
and the great ruff of your tail.

Translated by Alastair Reid

sleepwalking cat
#34169
But what do our pets dream about? Researchers believe they know the answer. Older studies, done decades ago in cats, involved temporarily releasing the suppression of motor activity that happens during REM sleep so they'd act out their dreams.

What researchers witnessed is sleepwalking cats doing things they'd normally do while awake â€" walking, swatting their forepaws, even pouncing on imaginary prey.

Similar research showed the same held true for dogs.

"Pointers point at dream birds, and Dobermans growl at dream burglers," Coren said.

Those experiments were not a demonstration of actual dreaming, said MIT's Wilson, but do suggest that in REM sleep the brain is functioning the same way it behaves during normal wakefulness. As early as 2001, he decided to find out if animals did in fact dream by eavesdropping on the sleeping brain.

more at:  http://www.usatoday.com/life/lifestyle/pets/2010-06-29-dogs-cats-dream_N.htm
#34170
REM occurs approximately every 90 minutes in people, and every 25 minutes in cats.

In dogs, research shows the frequency and length of dreams is linked to their physical size, said psychologist Stanley Coren, author of several books, including "How Dogs Think: Understanding the Canine Mind."

For example, he said, mastiffs and Great Danes might dream every 45 minutes for about five minutes, compared to their smaller canine cousins that enter a dream state every 10 minutes with episodes lasting less than 60 seconds.

Owners can tell if their dozing dog or feline is dreaming by looking for these clues: whisker twitching, paw tremors, irregular breathing and â€" in dogs â€" occasional high-pitched yips.
#34171
"If you compared a hippocampus in a rat to a dog; in a cat to a human, they contain all of the same pieces," said Wilson, an associate professor of brain and cognitive sciences.

Like people, pets go through multiple stages of sleep, from periods of slow wave sleep to REM (rapid eye movement), where most dreaming occurs.

"From the minute your head hits the pillow and you're out, the dreaming process begins," he said.

Non-REM dreams consist of quick snapshots of things usually done that day. During the deeper sleep state of REM, dreams last much longer and tap into a vast pool of past experiences drawn from weeks, months, even years in the past.

Do dogs and cats really dream?

By Maryann Mott, HealthDay
6/29/2010

How many pet owners have gotten a chuckle out of watching their dog sleep while its paws race frenetically in place?

Many figured that Rover was romping somewhere in dreamland, and scientists say they were right: Pets do dream while sleeping.

As dogs and cats doze, images of past events replay in their minds much the same way humans recall experiences while dreaming, said Matthew Wilson of MIT's Picower Institute for Learning and Memory in Cambridge, Mass. That's because the hippocampus, a part of the brain involved in memory, is basically wired the same way in virtually all vertebrates and mammals, he said.

"If you compared a hippocampus in a rat to a dog; in a cat to a human, they contain all of the same pieces," said Wilson, an associate professor of brain and cognitive sciences.

Quote from: TUBAGBOHOL.com on April 24, 2012, 08:29:08 AMThe lady Villar, who owns Vista Land, the biggest homebuilder in the Philippines today, bluntly answered the question on political dynasty saying that she wants to be elected on her competence and performance and not to be under the shadow of her popular husband.

oh, please...

one can get tired of politicians with bleeding hearts for the poor while they get themselves elected to protect their interests and increase their wealth some more.

i believe it was during her congressional days as chairman of the education committee that many schools with exotic names came up, allegedly owned by her family and other fellow congressmen, which she made easy by supposedly lowering the requirements.   down went the nation's educational standard as well.  if i got it right, it was one of the reasons the then education secretary butch abad (now the budget and management secretary) resigned from his post.

try meeting this woman in another setting, when she doesn't feel the need to be charming to potential voters, and you will see arrogance at its most blatant.

as for her claim that her husband is popular, come on, cesar montano is popular, but manny villar?  uh-huh.  i'd rather believe credible and popular economist and columnist solita monsod.

(i cannot directly give the name of the person who facilitated my help middle of last year because asking her again would be an imposition on my part.  i hope for your understanding.)

Maritime researcher Carl Thayer, Emeritus Professor of Politics of the University of New South Wales, said that Chinese scholars using historical heritage to explain its claim of sovereignty shows the lack of legal foundation under the international law for the claim.

Caitlyn Antrim, Executive Director, Rule of Law Committee for the Oceans of the USA, commented that "The U-shaped line has no ground under the international law because [the] historical basis is very weak". She added "I don’t understand what China claims for in that U-shaped line. If they claim sovereignty over islands inside that line, the question is whether they are able to prove their sovereignty over these islands. If China claimed sovereignty over these islands 500 years ago and then they did not perform their sovereignty, their claim of sovereignty becomes very weak. For uninhabited islands, they can only claim territorial seas, not exclusive economic zones (EEZ) from the islands”.

At the Conference on Maritime Study organized by the US-based Center for Strategic and International Study (CSIS) in June 2011, Dr. Su Hao from the China Foreign Affairs University in Beijing delivered a speech on China’s sovereignty and policy in the South China Sea using history as the main argument. However, Dr. Termsak Chalermpalanupap, Assistant Director for Program Coordination and External Relations of the ASEAN Secretariat, said: “I don’t think that the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) recognizes history as the basis to make sovereignty claims”.

According to the Kyodo News, in March 2010 PRC officials told US officials that they consider the South China Sea a "core interest" on par with Taiwan, Tibet and Xinjiang.

In July 2010 the Communist Party-controlled Global Times stated that "China will never waive its right to protect its core interest with military means" and a Ministry of Defense spokesman said that "China has indisputable sovereignty of the South Sea and China has sufficient historical and legal backing" to underpin its claims.

While China has never used the 9-dotted line as an inviolable border to its sovereignty, this strategy together with the fact that China's authority has never officially explained the meaning of the 9-dotted line have led many researchers to try to derive the exact meanings of the 9-dotted line map in the Chinese strategy in the South China Sea.

Some scholars believe that this line cannot be considered as a maritime boundary line because it violates international law which states that a national boundary line must be a stable and defined one. The 9-dotted line is not stable because it has been reduced from 11 to 9 dashes in the Gulf of Tonkin as endorsed by Zhou Enlai without any reasons given. It is also not a defined line because it does not have any specific geographic coordinates and does not tell how it can be connected if it was a continuous line.

Ongoing disputes

According to President Aquino of the Philippines, "China’s 9-dash line territorial claim over the entire South China Sea is against international laws, particularly the United National Convention of the Laws of the Sea (UNCLOS)".

Vietnam also rejected the 9-dotted line claim, citing that it is baseless and against the UNCLOS.  In 2010, at a regional conference in Hanoi, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced that "The United States has a national interest in freedom of navigation, open access to Asia's maritime commons, and respect for international law in the South China Sea".

The United States has also called for unfettered access to the area that China claims as its own, and accused Beijing of adopting an increasingly aggressive stance on the high seas.

The dotted line has been used by China as the maximum extent of its claim.  However, the dotted lines do not show how the lines would be joined if it was continuous and the extent of area claimed by China.  The 9-dotted-line has been officially protested by the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia.

Immediately after China submitted to the UN a map including the 9-dotted lines territorial claim in the South China Sea on May 7, 2009, the Philippines lodged a diplomatic protest against China for claiming the whole of South China Sea illegally. Vietnam and Malaysia filed their joint protest a day after China submitted its 9-dash line map to the UN. Indonesia also registered its protest, even though it did not have a claim on the South China Sea.

The Nine-dotted line was originally an "eleven-dotted-line" first indicated by the then Kuomintang government of the Republic of China in 1947 for its claims to the South China Sea.  After the Communist Party of China took over mainland China and formed the People's Republic of China in 1949, the line was adopted and revised to nine as endorsed by Zhou Enlai.  No country, including Southeast Asian countries or their past rulers, protested or challenged the validity of the 9-dash line from 1947 to 1970s.

China's 9-Dash Line territorial claim

[The 9-dash Line] refers to the demarcation line used by the government of the People's Republic of China for its claim in the South China Sea, an area including the Paracel Islands (occupied by China but claimed by Vietnam and Taiwan) and Spratly Islands disputed by the Philippines, China, Brunei, Malaysia, Taiwan and Vietnam, who each either claim all or part of the Spratlys, which are believed to sit on vast mineral resources, including oil.

According to Chinese sources the line first appeared in February 1948 as an eleven-dotted U-shape line in a map appearing in a private publication in the Republic of China.
