Weird and Extreme / Sympathy
June 27, 2007, 12:02:45 AM

G'day Tubag-Bohol,

I thought you'd be interested in seeing the attached photo.

The Story:
In some countries, poor people mutilate themselves (and sometimes their
children - India & Egypt) in order to obtain sympathy from overseas tourists
and hopefully be provided greater cash donations.

This particular individual has perfected a way of cutting the surface of his
skin to provide maximum visual impact while probably not causing serious injury.

Others, or so I am told, go to greater extents, such as breaking leg bones and
ensuring the bone protrudes out of the flesh.

How to Avoid Being Struck by Lightning - What you may not know about ducking the lightning
By: Lucian Dorneanu

You've probably heard than when a lightning storm catches you on open ground, you shouldn't take cover under a tree. That's true. Since lighting often strikes the highest spot in an area, ducking below a tall tree is definitely not a good idea, since you'll probably be struck in the same time.

If you're caught in an open area, with no places to take cover (a lonely wooden tool shed is not recommended) you are the tallest spot, so the chances
of being struck increase. You shouldn't lie on the ground either!

The best solution is to crouch, in a fetal position, only vertical, and to stand on your toes, the idea being to minimize the contact area with the ground. You should also lose all metal objects, like watches, metal lighters, belt buckles and metallic jewelry.

This may not be the ideal situation to be in, since a lightning storm can last for some time, but at least it's a good temporary solution.

The ideal hiding place is a car. Any car in the world, except for the soft-top convertibles. Nothing will happen to you when lightning strikes the car with you inside. No, it's not the rubber tires that isolate the electric charge from the ground, it's just the fact that the body of the car has a wide surface, thus dissipating the electrical current and acting like a protective cage.

However, if you don't have a car, try to take cover long before lightning can form directly above you. A good way to calculate how close to you the last lightning was is the following thunder.

Since sound travels at 340 meters per second (1,115 feet) you should count the delay between the lightning and the thunder, in seconds, and multiply with the distance, to give you an estimate of the distance, in straight line.

So, a 5 second delay means that the lightning struck at 1.7 km (around 1 mile) which is not much. If the delay decreases rapidly and consecutively, then it's time you got the hack out of there, as fast as you can!

What Is Jealousy? - Lack of trust
By: Stefan Anitei

It's like there’s just the two of you in this world. But after the "fire" of the beginning passes and you start building on your relationship, and you realize that many "hungry eagles" hover around. Can they be dangerous? In a committed relationship, partners have to assume that their connection is too strong to be disrupted by outside intruders. But sometimes, the bond is not that strong.

When "the green-eyed
monster" has installed inside of you, you see everyone coming in contact with your partner as a potential danger. Once jealousy got a hold on your relationship, it’s literally eating you inside, till it gets unbearable for both, and this it why so many couples break up.

Jealousy can be triggered by structural (inner, subjective) factors or objective ones, the main four being:

1. Low self-esteem makes you feel insecure about your value. This is due to your education, ideas that you have developed by yourself or if you perceive your partner as being superior to you (physically or mentally). As you cannot love yourself, you cannot believe others can do it, too, so you are constantly afraid of your partner leaving you.

2. You cannot be 100 % monogamous. You're prone to cheating on your partner (something like that typical greatest fear of a thief, namely that of being robbed), and you're obsessed he/she can do it, too.

3. You two haven't yet figured out how to establish safe boundaries within your relationship. Do not suffocate your partner, let him/her feel free, have a social group, but at the same time do not allow him/her too much freedom, that would permit intruders to infiltrate; in the end, even when he/she doen’t have the intention of doing it, he/she can "encounter" temptations. Too much or too little freedom induces anxiety linked to jealousy.

4. He/she cheats on you: many times, partners do not understand that this is not necessarily linked to penetration; it often has to do with making emotional connections to others outside the relationship, fact which is perceived as a betrayal by the other. If you share details of your private life with attractive members of the opposite sex (or which your partners just perceive as a potential threat or inadequate), this robs a sense of intimacy from your relationship, and weakens the bond, as it induces a vulnerability feeling on your partner (which can feel the betrayal even through indirect clues).

Trust, respect, adequate safe boundaries, therapy could help you openly share your feelings with the one you love.

June 26, 2007, 03:19:31 AM

Elephantiasis
-A disease, often found in tropical countries, in which parts of the human body become enlarged. It is caused by small roundworms that are injected into the body by mosquitoes.

-A parasitic disease which is transmitted from human to human by mosquito bites. The parasite tends to lodge in and block the lymph nodes that drain into the lower extremities, producing massive enlargement and deformity of the legs and genitalia. Dramatic photographs of those affected appear in every infectious disease text.

Carmen - Bohol / Re: Rape Case in Carmen, Bohol
June 26, 2007, 12:03:04 AM
There are only 2 elements of a crime.
1.   The desire to commit a crime.
2.   The opportunity to commit a crime.

Without just one of these elements, there’s no chance of a crime. In this case, it seems that both of the elements are present…

Lets take a review…

The respondent-jailguard, represented by lawyer Lord Marapao IV, was able to prove that the complainant was his girlfriend, having known each other since, they eventually became sweethearts.

It was also established that the jailguard was not pointing a gun at her that time. After the alleged rape took place, both respondent and complainant went out to ate in a barbecue place where there were many people.

"If indeed she was raped by the respondent she could have asked help from any of the persons who were there," the prosecutor said.

Weird and Extreme / Weightlifter
June 23, 2007, 04:47:49 AM

The rather shocking photo attached snapped in November 16th of last year by a spectator at the collegiate power lifting championships at Penn State. The unfortunate competitor, who expressed a plea to remain anonymous, remembered to surgeons that he was " stuck" at the bottom of a personal best attempt in the squat lift when he "sort of pulled his stomach in and pushed extra hard, at the same time as trying to complete the lift."

He remembers a loud popping, splattering noise then a fierce stabbing pain and then not being able to move from the squat position. He remained in this position for about half an hour, since trying to stand caused him overwhelming agonizing pain. Paramedics arrived and applied anesthesia on the spot and carried him to an ambulance. He was rushed to surgery, where surgeons described the trauma as an explosive and aggravated prolapse of the bowel". Meanwhile it was revealed that the weight was removed from his shoulders at the time of the incident by two "spotters" on either side of the lifter. The third spotter who was standing behind the lifter was unfortunately sprayed with fecal matter at the time of the incident. This spotter promptly fainted when he realized the extent of of the injury to the lifter, who was a personal friend.

This compounded the task of first aid officers who were at a loss as to how to treat the injury to the lifter in any case, who remained in the squatting position moaning in pain much to the consternation of the helpless audience. The hapless lifter had successful surgery to relieve the prolapse, but remained immobilized with his feet elevated in stirrups for 2 weeks to ensure "internal compliance with the surgery and that the organs retracted successfully".

To add insult to injury, the ex-lifter required rectal stitching to partially occlude the anal orifice and stitch the rectal passage (which had significantly expanded and torn during the prolapse) and also was put on a low fiber low residue diet to combat flatulence to avoid any possibility of a recurrence.

Weird and Extreme / Goiter
June 23, 2007, 04:41:46 AM

Your thyroid is that little glandular butterfly in your neck that you're not exactly sure what it is or why it's there. It wasn't even described in scientific literature until in 1656 Thomas Wharton made a distinction between it and the larynx, but for 200 more years its function (regulation of the body's metabolism) was completely unknown. Goiters are excessive enlargements of the thyroid, which may be caused by iodine deficiency, or by an excess of thyroid stimulating hormone. Because we salt everything with iodized salt, iodine deficiency is never a problem in America, but it is elsewhere in the world.

Facts and Trivia / What's a Micropenis?
June 23, 2007, 04:24:14 AM
What's a Micropenis?
- When a man is refused his right
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor

A man with a micropenis has an unusually small penis, of about 2 cm at birth, and 4 cm in adulthood (2.5 times smaller than the average penis size). The micropenis is discovered shortly after birth when all parts of the genitals have had a chance to fully evolve, when scrotum and perineum is well-developed, to discard ambiguity like hypospadias. Micropenis is very rare and only shows up in about 0.6 % of the entire male population.

The
micropenis is believed to be caused by low levels of the needed male sex hormones (testosterone and dihydrotestosterone) that allow the normal development of the genitals, penis included.

This is due to abnormal testicular development (testicular dysgenesis, Klinefelter syndrome, Leydig cell hypoplasia), specific defects of testosterone or dihydrotestosterone synthesis (17,20-lyase deficiency, 5á-reductase deficiency), androgen insensitivity syndromes, inadequate pituitary stimulation (gonadotropin deficiency) or other forms of congenital hypogonadism.

The micropenis can be also the result of genetic malformation syndromes not involving the sex hormones. It sometimes is the result of congenital growth hormone deficiency (congenital hypopituitarism), which also induces lower height.

Moreover, some genes have been identified affecting penis and digit size without shifting hormone levels. 81 Japanese patients with micropenis presented a mutation for the SRD5A2 gene, which encodes for the enzyme 5{alpha}-reductase-2 and plays a role in male sex differentiation.

This condition induces severe effects both mentally and physically for the patient. Micropenis can cause a severe self esteem and social-life problem, besides a physiological one. A man with a micropenis can father babies, but sexual pleasure is largely absent. Also urinating while standing is really difficult when you have a micropenis.

There are different treatments for micro penis. At birth, the baby can be supplemented with the hormones to induce the penis to fully form (gonadotropin or testosterone). There are also penis enlargement surgeries (phalloplasties) but these are not recommended by most physicians, as they can induce risky secondary effects (impotence, swelling, scars, infections, curbed penis) and only add 1-2 inch (2.5-5 cm) at most. There are also traction devices (penis stretchers) and exercises.

The First Born Child Is the Most Intelligent in the House
- 2.3 more points in intelligence tests for the eldest sibling
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor

Who is older, Dexter or Deedee? Apparently, the answer to this question is Dexter, as revealed by a new research made on 250,000 military draftees in Norway. Firstborn children have appeared to score significantly higher in IQ tests than their younger siblings, something linked by researchers to social, not biological, factors, as younger brothers displayed higher IQs when raised as an eldest child following the death of an older brother or sister.

The team
led by Petter Kristensen, at the University of Oslo, analyzed data of intelligence tests gathered from 18- and 19-year-old men drafted into the country's military between 1985 and 2004. The scientists investigated at the Norwegian birth registry if these men had older or younger siblings. They also considered if their siblings had died shortly after birth, or at a relatively early age.

The data analysis showed that firstborn men present, on average, an IQ higher on average with 2.3 points than those who are second-born. The same tendency followed for the third born brother compared to the second, and so on.

"In the US, SAT exams in reading and mathematics have a combined total of 1600 points, and on these two sections a difference in IQ of 2.3 could mean a 30 point difference in scores. This can mean the difference between getting into a premier university or second-tier university in the US," said Frank Sulloway, at the University of California, Berkeley, US.

A subsequent review of about 600 families with at least four children revealed that the eldest sibling typically presented an IQ with 2.9 points higher than the fourth-born sibling. "A 2.3 IQ score difference means that the eldest child has a 13% higher chance of having above-average intelligence than the second-born in their family.", said Sulloway.

The social birth order, not actual birth order, induced this effect: those whose older sibling died at a young age presented on average a 2.3-point higher IQ score than other second-born individuals. "Older siblings might have a higher IQ because they act as surrogate parents from time to time, tutoring their younger siblings in certain situations.", suggested Sulloway.

Other hypotheses are that parents invest more time and resources in their firstborn child, exposing him more to their sophisticated adult vocabulary. "Parents might be able to boost the IQs of younger siblings by scheduling in more individual time with them," said Sulloway.

Still, Kristensen signals that older siblings are much more at risk of having a low birth-weight and die before reaching adulthood.

How Can The Camels Resist So Much Without Drinking Water?
- The "solution" is not the hump
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor

Camels are animals with a history. Some say that dromedary or Arabian camel (with one hump) could have been domesticated in southern Arabia between 6,000 to 3,400 years ago, while the larger and slower Bactrian camel (with two humps) in Central Asia about 3,500 years ago.

In the ninth century BC, dromedaries were used for warfare: not only were they used to carry archers, but also to transport heavy loads. In 853 BC, the Assyrian king Shalmaneser III faced an army made of Syrians and Jews joined by the Arabian king Gindibu, who led an army of 1,000 ...camel riders. The Assyrian chivalry got frightened at seeing these beasts and ran away. On the ruins of the city of Nineveh (the ancient Assyrian capital), on a relief can be seen the chivalry of king Assurbanipal (669-627 BC) fighting Arab camel riders.

The conquests of the Persian king Cyrus the Great (559-530) would have been impossible without logistical support of dromedaries. In c.547, he fought against king Croesus of Lydia (modern western Turkey) and employed these animals in what was to become one of the most famous stratagems of Antiquity: "He gathered all the dromedaries from his army train, took off their burdens and set cavalry men upon them. Having thus furnished them, he ordered them to go in front of the rest of the army towards the horsemen of Croesus [...]. He did this because horses are afraid of dromedaries and can not endure to see or smell them." The Persian king Cambyses (530-522 BC) introduced dromedaries in Egypt. The Persian king Xerxes (485-465 BC) was proud of his camels and their Arabian riders.

Domesticated camels
were used through much of North Africa, and the Romans maintained a corps of camel warriors to patrol the edge of the desert. Camels were also used by Romans for transportation, especially in the eastern provinces of Egypt, Arabia, Judaea, Syria, Cappadocia, and Mesopotamia. The Persian camels, however, were not particularly suited to trading or travel over the Sahara; rare journeys through the desert were made on horse-drawn chariots.

Julius Caesar considered the greatest war catch after the defeat of the Numidian king Juba’s camels. (Numidia is today northern Algeria). In 363 AD, general Romanus asked as a war tribute to the dwellers of the city Lepcis Magna (in present day Libya) 4,000 camels, for the transport of his army.

Much later, the Muslims claimed that Allah first created the camel, and after that the mountains, the deserts, the plains, the rivers, the seas and the other living things. Muhammad itself is said to have escaped from Mecca to Medina on the back of a camel.

The Islamic conquest of North Africa brought Arabian camels, well-suited to long desert journeys and which could carry a great deal of cargo. For the first time this allowed substantial trade over the Sahara. The Bactrian Camels were the main burden beast on the Silk Road, connecting China to Middle East.

Till today, many nomad tribes of the desert depend on the camels, like the Tuaregs of Sahara and Arab Bedouins, for transporting, milk, meat, wool and leather. In Mongolia, the Bactrian Camels offer the hair from which the felt, the material for traditional yurt tents, is made.

Camels are extremely well adapted to their environment, the desert. They can carry heavy cargoes, stand sand storms and large temperature differences. Camels are called the "desert ships", and they can swim when they encounter water. The north Egyptian lake Borollos has a depth varying between 20 cm and 2 m (0.6 to 6 ft). It cannot be crossed by boat or vehicles, and only camels can be used in this case.

A camel can resist 17 days without drinking under a scorching heat. It was wrongly believed its resistance resided in the water kept in the hump or in a stomach pouch. If it doesn’t drinking anything for 17 days, a camel can lose a third of its weight, without being affected. But when it catches the opportunity, in can drink 104 liters of water at once (the Bactrian Camel, which is larger, can drink up to 120 liters), in 7-8 minutes! But three days later, there is no sign of water in its stomach or hump.

To resist the lack of water, the camels have several means of adjusting to the situation. Their body temperature varies depending on the environment: in the cooler morning is of 34o C, during the hot afternoon it reaches 41o C. The kidneys' function is regulated depending on the water availability: they produce 7 liters of urine when water is abundant, and 500 g when it does not drink for days. When thirsty, transpiration is reduced towards zero.

A camel's thick coat reflects sunlight. A shorn camel has to sweat 50% more to avoid overheating. It also insulates them from the intense heat that radiates from hot desert sand. Their long legs help by keeping them further from the hot ground.

This ability to fluctuate body temperature and the efficiency of their sweating allows them to preserve about five liters of water a day.

Another issue: camels never run, they just speed up. Running would raise transpiration. They can make daily 160 km (100 miles) with a speed of 16 km (10 mi)/hour.

The camels' humps are reservoirs of fatty tissue. When this fat is metabolized, it is not only a source of energy, but yields through reaction with oxygen from the air 1,111 g of water per 1,000 g of fat converted. Though this metabolization of the fat generates a net loss of water through respiration during the process.

After drinking, water is spread uniformly in the body and it is lost gradually, about 100 liters in 17 days. The average water content of the camel's body is low: while the cow's tissues contain 80 % water, the donkey's (another desert animal) 65 %, and the camel's just 50 %. A camel crossing a desert loses in 24 hours only 2 % of its bodyweight, while the donkey at least 8 %. Curiously, wild Bactrian Camels from the Gobi desert (China-Mongolia) can drink saltwater.

Camels can withstand at least 20-25% weight loss due to sweating (most mammals can only withstand about 3-4% dehydration before cardiac failure results from the thickened blood). A camel's blood remains hydrated even though the body fluids are lost; until this 25% limit is reached.

But how can camels drink over 100 liters of water at once without serious consequences? This is the same as a human drinking 20 liters of water in 10 minutes. This would induce water intoxication in humans. It was found that the red blood cells of the camels have an ovoid shape and the property of swelling themselves, till achieving a double volume and after that gradually release the stored liquid.

The rest of the camel's body is adapted to the conditions in the desert: the hoof is perfect for the soft, instable sand; the thick eyebrows and eyelashes protect the eyes against sand and sun; the nostrils are moved by muscles that can close them hermetically (during the sand storms).

In their native lands, camels feel by far the presence of a fountain or river. They never forget the place where they have found water.

As a camel's mouth is extremely tough and pain resistant, they can eat without any problem thorny desert plants, which are avoided by other animals, even with spines so hard they can penetrate through a shoe's sole. Camels literally can survive on plant wastes, like an old twig basket or a mat.
