One Month Before Heart Attack, Your Body Will Warn You With These 8 Signs

According to the American Heart and Stroke Association, heart disease and strokes are the number one leading cause of death around the world, most of which suffer from first-time or recurrent heart attacks. Heart attacks are the result of:

insufficient blood supply caused by the blockage of a coronary artery

Over 700,000 people suffer from heart attacks each year and over 100,000 of those people do not recuperate. Although the data collected reveals a strikingly high number of cardiovascular diseases in recent years, there are a number of key symptoms that an individual will most likely experience well before a life threatening heart attack that can potentially save one’s life.

Here are 8 crucial symptoms that are likely to occur one month before a heart attack that can improve one’s survival rate when properly acknowledged.

Propaganda

In his January 24 Facebook Live interview with Duterte supporter "Maharlika" in Los Angeles, Andanar said the possibility of bloggers being accredited to cover the Palace is "very bright." The unspoken rule is that they should support the Duterte presidency and dish out only "constructive information."

In that interview, Andanar said a certain Carlos Munda, who runs the pro-Duterte MindaVote page, has already been given access by the PCO to its newsfeed. He said it's really a matter of creating a "new system" to include bloggers in the news feed of the Palace.

For Andanar, whether in Malacañang or in his man cave, the distinction between journalists and bloggers, as well as news and propaganda, are all a blur. â€" with Paige Occeñola and Pia Ranada/Rappler.com

Evidently, the posts got their first stimulus on January 7 and hit an apex close to the day of the Cabinet meeting itself. When the issue was ignored by the Cabinet because of more compelling issues they had to discuss, the number of posts dropped dramatically, more visibly by January 10.

Despite occasional spurts, interest in #LeniLeaks subsided not long after, more clearly by January 11 onwards. The posts, however, prompted a lot of comments that peaked on January 8, then started tapering by January 11 (see chart below).

In the comments section, some of those who posted were impatient about updates on the issue. Unfortunately, the revelations of Andanar’s sources were found to be inadequate to merit a probe by the justice department.
#3404

Perhaps because it was a weekend or because not enough traction was created, the number of posts dropped not long after.

The next attempt to sustain interest came the following day on January 8, a Sunday, via a second episode of the podcast, leading up to the January 9 Cabinet meeting, where Andanar said the #LeniLeaks issue would be brought up.

The second episode, however, got much lesser viewership. As of afternoon of January 26, it had 98,000 views and over 1,100 shares. The numbers were much lower compared to the over 774,000 views and over 13,000 shares of the first episode.
#3405

After Sasot and Nieto failed to create enough splash the first time around, Andanar got them as interviewees on January 7 to shed light on “#LeniLeaks” which, he said, had gone “viral.”

Yet our data analysis of posts related to #LeniLeaks from January 5-15, 2017, showed that before January 7, the issue had not created enough buzz. The podcast on January 7, a Saturday, however, boosted the message and prompted a lot of shares as seen by the spike on that day (see chart below).

Boosts and failure

During his podcast, Andanar built up Sasot and Nieto, then known as the anonymous Thinking Pinoy, and referred to them as “internet superstar bloggers.”

Donning headphones and doing the interviews, Andanar made it easy for viewers on Facebook to forget he is an official of the Palace and no longer a broadcaster.

Instead of using government resources at his disposal to establish the veracity of #LeniLeaks through solid intelligence information from other agencies of government, Andanar chose the two partisan bloggers as his sources.
#3407

He reported that only he and a handful of others were at a hotel lobby in Singapore waiting to ambush-interview officials. However, this is not how the media works and gathers news. Journalists do not base their stories solely on officialdom but countless other sources, depending on issues they are pursuing and monitoring. Ambush-interviews likewise do not yield the best of stories because officials tend to give answers on the fly.

Nieto threatened the press corps that when he sees them in Russia during a presidential visit, he would be reporting on what they will be doing.

It is these types of disseminators of information whom Andanar, the President’s communications secretary, has chosen to promote.
#3408

Nieto, on the other hand, also recently repeatedly cursed from Singapore the MPC for their statement calling out Andanar.

The MPC â€" accredited journalists assigned to cover the Palace â€" said in their statement that they were “disturbed by the propensity of the officials of this administration to blame the media whenever the inflammatory statements of the President stir controversy or draw flak.” Andanar had accused the MPC of “misreporting” Duterte’s statements on martial law.

Not content with his curses, Nieto flashed the dirty finger repeatedly during his 13-minute rant. “Nasaan ang Malacañang Press Corps? Nakatambay kayo sa hotel o nagsa-shopping kayo sa Orchard Road…. Puro kayo inutil, mga putang ina ’nyo. ’Wag kayo umarte na kay-iinam. Wala naman kayong ginawa sa Singapore kundi mamasyal. O, ’yan ba loyal sa Filipino people?”

(Where’s the Malacañang Press Corps? Standing by the hotel or shopping on Orchard Road…. You’re all useless, sons of bitches. Don’t act as if you’re all good. You didn’t do anything in Singapore but to shop. Is that what you call loyal to the Filipino people?)

It was Sasot who first posted about #LeniLeaks on Twitter in the evening of January 5. She followed up with a Facebook post afternoon of January 6, detailing the message of United States-based Loida Nicolas Lewis in a Yahoogroup about how to defend the Vice President from criticism and defeated vice presidential candidate Bongbong Marcos: “The only way to fight this evil plot to unseat Vice President Leni Robredo is to ask Duterte to Resign.”

It was also Sasot who recently equated the punishment of fake news with the punishment of people who write fiction, generating a wave of criticism and negative reactions. Faraway in The Netherlands, she openly cursed Rappler’s Palace reporter Pia Ranada for her story on #LeniLeaks. Sasot’s post has since been taken down.

Platform of legitimacy

Through his resurrected Martin’s Mancave â€" with “Lifecast” attached to the brand to give the podcast a new name on Facebook â€" the Cabinet secretary provides the two bloggers with a platform and grants them legitimacy, both as attack dogs out to intimidate journalists and as sources of alarmist information.

This shrewd artificial online boost spread like wild fire the message about the supposed plot to oust Duterte. It rattled the social media sphere of Duterte followers and generated a lot of anger about the supposed grand conspiracy.

Andanar justified his decision to discuss #LeniLeaks in his podcast, saying that the administration does not welcome any destabilization attempts and is against methods to advance such destabilization interests “kung totoo man (if they are true).”
#3411

An apologist of the President and a public official who gets paid by taxpayers’ money, Andanar is embarking on a dangerous path of propaganda and media control.

As articulated by media theorist Manuel Castells, propaganda and media control refers to the “fabrication and diffusion of messages that distort facts and induce misinformation for the purpose of advancing government interests,” and involves “the censorship of any message deemed to undermine these interests, if necessary by criminalizing unhindered communication and prosecuting the messenger.”

Palace insiders said that, starting September 2016, money was released to “groups” that had maintained an online presence in support of the President. The same insiders said some of these groups are identified with Andanar.
#3412

As of the afternoon of Thursday, January 26, the episode had garnered over 774,000 views and shared over 13,000 times. The numbers are quite impressive for a first episode that ran for over 50 minutes and featured interviews with two bloggers who are avid supporters of Duterte â€" Sass Rogando Sasot and Rey Joseph (RJ) Nieto, who, until only a few weeks ago, was known as the anonymous “Thinking Pinoy.” Andanar ended that episode with a short interview with National Security Adviser Hermogenes Esperon Jr.

Early on, after Duterte won as president, the first thing that Andanar asked the Malacañang Press Corps (MPC) officers was if bloggers like "Thinking Pinoy" could be accredited as members of the press corps. Clear about the distinction between the role of the press and that of pro-Duterte bloggers, the officers said no.

MANCAVE. Communications Secretary Martin Andanar launches his Martin's Mancave Lifecast on January 7, 2017. Andanar's Facebook page

MANILA, Philippines â€" Ever heard of Martin’s Mancave Lifecast? It’s a podcast on Facebook that features no less than the Secretary of the Presidential Communications Office (PCO), Martin Andanar.

The former commentator of Aksyon TV and anchor of TV5’s Aksyon sa Umaga, Andanar hosted his first podcast under the Duterte administration on a Saturday evening, January 7, and titled it, “Leni Leaks: Truth or Lies?”

The maiden podcast of the Cabinet secretary under the new government amplified a supposedly explosive discovery by bloggers about an alleged plan to oust President Rodrigo Duterte.

Beyond the CBCP's partial list, more fake news sites abound as opposing political camps in the Philippines spread their own propaganda.

In fact, a number of officials and agencies of the Duterte administration, such as Communications Assistant Secretary Mocha Uson, have also been accused of spreading fake news. Uson and many pro-Duterte bloggers have also discredited legitimate journalists as "presstitutes." (READ: Inside Martin Andanar's man cave; posted below)

Cracking down on fake news sites, the CBCP said in an unprecedented pastoral letter on Wednesday that it is a sin to spread fake news.

The CBCP said the Catholic faith obliges Catholics "to refrain from patronizing, popularizing, and supporting identified sources of 'alternative facts' or 'fake news.'"

Referring to fake news, Villegas pointed out on Wednesday: "Not only does this offend against the orientation of the human intellect to the truth. It is, more fundamentally, a sin against charity because it hinders persons from making right and sound decisions and induces them, instead, to make faulty ones!"

The fact that Mr Trump is a smaller, shallower figure than most Shakespearean heroes (or villains, come to that) makes the craven behaviour of his cabinet secretaries and other Republican enablers even harder to explain. Unlike courtiers in a Jacobean tragedy, they risk neither execution nor banishment. No invading army or witches’ curse impels so many members of Team Trump to sell their reputations and dignity cheap: merely ambition, and the comforting fiction that they are indispensable. Serving Mr Trump is a modest test of character, by Shakespearean standards. It is one which too many underlings are failing.

Robes and furr’d gowns hide all

Shakespeare understood bullies. The tragedies are filled with demagogues: orators with a genius for stirring up divisions and stoking grievances to turn decent citizens into angry, vengeful followers. During the election Mr Trump called rivals “disgusting” or said they “choked like a dog”. This week he called the news media both fake and “dirty” and said they pursue “their agenda of hate”. Shakespearean populistsâ€"men like the plotters in “Julius Caesar” or the crowd-pleasing tribunes in “Coriolanus”â€"also dehumanise opponents. They call their foes wolves, or an elitist “enemy to the people”, liable to pay commoners no more heed than dogs that are “beat for barking”.

USA and Canada / Re: Shakespeare it ain't
June 23, 2017, 01:02:41 PM

But Mr Trump is no King Lear, whose choleric old age was preceded by a long and fruitful reign. Nor is he a Julius Caesar, whose grandeur renders him incautious around flatterers: just before his assassins strike, Caesar sniffs that he is unmoved by their “base spaniel fawning”. Instead Mr Trump is a boastful, thin-skinned praise-addict. Lacking a governing record after squandering the start of his presidency, he used his first full cabinet meeting to stage a televised display of loyalty. He knew full well that the powerful men and women in the room were flattering himâ€"and relished their humiliation. He is more bully than tragic hero.

USA and Canada / Re: Shakespeare it ain't
June 23, 2017, 01:02:07 PM

For all that, those drawing parallels between Shakespeare’s tragedies and the Trump administration need to be sure that they are comparing like with like. The present White House may be uncomfortably reminiscent of a medieval court, with its cliques and coerced displays of fealty, all taking place under the watchful gaze of a ruling familyâ€"as cabinet members cringed this week, an impassive Jared Kushner, Mr Trump’s son-in-law and senior counsellor, could be seen monitoring their tributes from a seat behind the president.

USA and Canada / Re: Shakespeare it ain't

In a further demonstration that Shakespeare’s works pack a political punch more than 400 years on, Mr Trump’s cabinet meeting was held on the very day that a production of “Julius Caesar” opened in New York at an outdoor theatre in Central Park, in which the Roman dictator is played by a blonde, Trump-like figure in a suit and red tie. That staging, including a graphic stabbing, prompted anger from conservative news outlets and from the president’s son, Donald Trump junior, who asked on Twitter: “I wonder how much of this ‘art’ is funded by taxpayers?” As some corporate sponsors withdrew support and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency, denied having funded the play, its director argued that Shakespeare’s drama does not incite violence but in fact explores the terrible costs of trying to preserve a republic through undemocratic means.
#3425
USA and Canada / Re: Shakespeare it ain't
June 23, 2017, 01:00:21 PM

As Mr Trump basked in congratulations, then hailed himself as the most “active” and productive president since Franklin D. Roosevelt, it was understandable if some recalled Shakespeare’s tragedies. For those works often explore how sycophancy clouds the judgment of great men, especially when pride prevents them from seeing that they are being gulled. As he divides his kingdom between three daughters, Lear confuses flowery words with love. It is fawning that lures Julius Caesar to a fatal ambush in the Capitol, as a conspirator predicts: “But when I tell [Caesar] he hates flatterers,/He says he does, being then most flatterèd.”
#3426
USA and Canada / Re: Shakespeare it ain't
June 23, 2017, 12:59:46 PM

No secretary quite filled the role of Cordelia, the princess whose principled refusal to flatter King Lear in the opening scene of that tragedy (“I cannot heave/My heart into my mouth”) helps to precipitate her father’s descent into madness and the play’s plunge into eye-gouging, several murders and a small war. A few came close, notably James Mattis, the defence secretary and a thoughtful former four-star Marine general. Rather than fawn, Mr Mattis used his turn to praise troops and to express a core plank of his philosophy: that America maintains potent armed forces so that its diplomats “always negotiate from a position of strength”.
#3427
USA and Canada / Re: Shakespeare it ain't
June 23, 2017, 12:59:00 PM

Vice-President Mike Pence set the tone, confiding that serving a president “who’s keeping his word to the American people” is “the greatest privilege of my life”. As Mr Trump clenched his jaw, nodded and threw in an occasional “good job” of encouragement, his cabinet secretariesâ€"who include former governors, retired four-star generals and more than one billionaireâ€"mostly followed suit. They variously reported that his presidency has “thrilled” crime-fighters, excited the world with its “international flair” and inspired “love” in Mississippi. “My hat is off to you!” swooned the energy secretary, Rick Perry, who in 2015 called Mr Trump a “cancer on conservatism”. For as long as cameras whirred this surge of praise rolled round the room like a bureaucrats’ Mexican wave, peaking with a testimonial from Reince Priebus, the White House chief of staff. Unabashed by speculation that he is to be sacked, Mr Priebus declared: “We thank you for the opportunity and the blessing to serve your agenda.” The verdict of a Twitter-user from Toronto, “This is actually the start of ‘King Lear’,” went viral, pinging around the political internet.

This is not Shakespearean drama: the penalty for characters who stand up to the king is too small for that

AS A rule, it is not ideal for a presidential administration to remind onlookers of a feuding, villain-haunted Shakespearean tragedy. Yet that was a widely shared reaction when the first full meeting of President Donald Trump’s cabinet, on June 12th, began with an extended flattery contest.

He said the incident had nothing to with his stint as ex-mayor of Bien Unido, a fourth-class municipality, for three terms, or nine years.

Gisela, a Cebuano, was a pilot for 16 years. She became AirAsia Philippines' first female captain. She resigned to run as mayor in last year's elections.

The couple, who were married in December 2015, have a three-year-old son.

Taliño said that there was a blotter report at the Guadalupe Police Station about a mauling incident involving the two.

The news of her death shocked the aviation community with Gisela's co-pilots and colleagues extending their grief and condolences.

Charges for kidnapping, murder and serious physical injuries will be filed against Niño, Riolito and a certain Lopas.

Police have yet to announce the names of the other arrested persons while a manhunt is on for four others.

http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cebu/
#3431

After the LLCPO alerted the Regional Intelligence Division about the kidnapping, the Bohol Provincial Police Office invited Niño for questioning.

After evidence and witnesses pointed to him as the mastermind of the kidnapping, Niño was arrested and flown in to Cebu City yesterday morning.

"Our witnesses were afraid to go back to Bohol so that's why the board member was flown here for the rest of the investigation," Taliño said.

In an interview inside the detention cell of the Regional Special Operations Task Group, Niño shook and bowed his head when asked why he killed his wife.

"Lawom kaayo (ang rason). Mangayo lang kog dispensa (It's complicated. I just ask for forgiveness)," he said.
#3432

"Gisela wanted to leave the marriage because she felt she was being used because of her position. She's also a pilot. She had a career,” Leyson said.

Riolito said he stayed on the banca while Niño and men went to the dive camp.

They returned with only Gisela in tow. He said Niño talked for a bit, and then the latter shot Gisela.

“The board member and his men wrapped her body with a fish net and placed two rocks inside. I was among those who held the fish net because Niño asked me to help,” Riolito said in Cebuano.

“I trusted Niño when he texted and called me earlier because he's my cousin. I had no idea he was going to kill his wife,” he said in Cebuano.
#3433

She said the men also used a stun gun on her and held her at gunpoint while Gisela pleaded to her husband to spare her.

She knew Gisela was talking to her husband because she called him by his nickname “In-in.”

Leyson said she fainted when she was hit in the head with the butt of the gun, but not before seeing her friend getting punched in the stomach.

While she and her son were brought to a waiting vehicle, she said she saw Niño's official pickup.

"We were transported to the Tubigon port where they gave us three tickets but Gisela was not with us. I can't believe she's dead," Leyson said.
#3434

Leyson said that they went to the Commission on Audit in Tagbilaran City to file a graft and corruption case and Gisela's annulment papers.

Leyson said a Wilson Juliar, a certain Brian and their driver Randel Lopas were in a hurry for them to return to Bien Unido last Tuesday.

"I warned Gisela that I felt that something was wrong because they were really pushing for us to go back," she said.

They arrived in the town at 11 p.m.

"We were resting inside the Double Barrier Reef Dive Camp & Dive Site in Bien Unido, tired after filing the case. At around 2 a.m. on Wednesday, I woke to find six to eight men barging into our room and duct-taping my face and my neck," Leyson said.
#3435

Riolito told police that Niño shot Gisela while they were on board a boat.

"Niño was the only one armed. He used his own gun," Riolito said in Cebuano.

Riolito, a resident of Talibon, Bohol, said his cousin called him to come to Bien Unido and to bring a pump boat.

Riolito is a Buen Unido municipal employee, who is assigned to operate a banca used to monitor municipal waters.

Authorities would not have known about Gisela's death had it not been for her best friend and confidante, Angela Leyson, and the latter's 17-year-old son, who reported the matter to the Lapu-Lapu City Police Office (LLCPO).
#3436

Riolito was among five suspects, who were caught in Bohol yesterday.

“As to the motive of the crime, they have a lot of problems as husband and wife like finances, family problem and allegedly a third party is involved,” PRO 7 Director Noli Taliño said in Tagalog.

Two divers from Olango Island were tapped to conduct the search, which started at 6 p.m. and ended at 8:25 p.m.

Reiniro Tatoy, a diving instructor, said they will resume the search today because it was already dark and it was high tide.

He believes Gisela's body is still in the area and has not been carried off by the current.

PB member nabbed for wife's death

Friday, June 09, 2017

By JOHANNA O. BAJENTING, FLORNISA M. GITGANO

AUTHORITIES have yet to find the body of Gisela Bendong-Boniel, the 38-year-old mayor of Bien Unido, Bohol.

She was kidnapped and killed at dawn yesterday.

The police's prime suspect is her husband, Provincial Board (PB) Member Niño Rey Boniel.

The Police Regional Office (PRO) 7 tried to look for Gisela in the waters off Caubian Island in Lapu-Lapu City for two hours last night, to no avail.

Riolito Boniel, Niño's cousin, accompanied the police during the search, giving them directions were Gisela's body was thrown.

As his first-person account clearly states, no letter was involved, and Edison was never kept out of the loop of the story for the sake of his already hurt feelings. Edison, one of the most prolific and ingenious inventors of all time, would be homeschooled until he set out on his own at the age of sixteen, openly grateful for his mother’s support and education throughout his life.

Fact Checker:Alex Kasprak
Published: Dec 1st, 2016

#3443

The veracity of this version of events, however, is belied by the actual account given by Thomas Edison himself in a rare interview to a long-extinct newspaper and literary journal called T.P’s Weekly that was published on 29 November 1907. This interview is the earliest documented account of the story of his leaving school, and is therefore likely to be the source of the historical fiction regarding his early education:

One day I overheard the teacher tell the inspector that I was “addled” and it would not be worthwhile keeping me in school any longer. I was so hurt by this last straw that I burst out crying and went home and told my mother about it. Then I found out what a good thing a good mother is. She came out as my strong defender. Mother love was aroused, mother pride wounded to the quick. She brought me back to the school and angrily told the teacher that he didn’t know what he was talking about, that I had more brains than he himself, and a lot more talk like that. In fact, she was the most enthusiastic champion a boy ever had, and I determined right then that I would be worthy of her and show her that her confidence was not misplaced.
#3444

Based on fictitious combinations of various actual slivers of truth, a number of heartwarming tales about the decision to homeschool Edison and his ability to overcome early educational struggles have been spun for a century. On November 19, 2016, the Facebook page “Love What Really Matters” became the latest to follow in that tradition, posting a video based on the text from this reddit post. The video’s script reads as follows:

One day, as a small child, Thomas Edison came home from school and gave a paper to his mother. He said to her “Mom, my teacher gave this paper to me and told me only you are to read it. What does it say?”

Her eyes welled with tears as she read the letter out loud to her child…

“Your son is a genius. This school is too small for him and doesn’t have good enough teachers to train him. Please teach him yourself.”

Many years after Edison’s mother had died, he became one of the greatest inventors of the century.

One day he was going through a closet and he found the folded letter that his old teacher wrote his Mother that day. He opened it…

The message written on the letter was “Your son is mentally deficient. We cannot let him attend our school anymore. He is expelled.”

Edison became emotional reading it and then wrote in his diary:

“Thomas A. Edison was a mentally deficient child whose mother turned him into the genius of the Century.”

A positive word of encouragement can help change anyone’s destiny.
#3445

According to a United States Library of Congress biography of Edison, there was indeed an incident in which he was labeled “addled” by a school administrator that led his mother to remove him from school, but this information was not conveyed in a letter or hidden from Edison:

Edison was a poor student. When a schoolmaster called Edison “addled,” his furious mother took him out of the school and proceeded to teach him at home. Edison said many years later, “My mother was the making of me. She was so true, so sure of me, and I felt I had someone to live for, someone I must not disappoint.” At an early age, he showed a fascination for mechanical things and for chemical experiments.

ORIGIN

Thomas Edison was famously homeschooled by his mother â€" a teacher by training. His troubles with the formal classroom setting, as well as his affection for his mother are well documented.

His early life is succinctly described in the National Park Service biography of Edison:

Thomas Alva Edison was born on February 11, 1847 in Milan, Ohio; the seventh and last child of Samuel and Nancy Edison. When Edison was seven his family moved to Port Huron, Michigan. Edison lived here until he struck out on his own at the age of sixteen. Edison had very little formal education as a child, attending school only for a few months. He was taught reading, writing, and arithmetic by his mother, but was always a very curious child and taught himself much by reading on his own. This belief in self-improvement remained throughout his life.

WHAT'S TRUE
Thomas Edison was described by educators as “addled,” and spent only a few months in a formal classroom before being taken out of school and educated by his mother.

WHAT'S FALSE
There was never any such letter, any discovery of the truth of that letter later in life, or any evidence to support the claim that Edison’s mother ever lied to her son about his performance in the classroom to protect his feelings.

“All the intention and behavior taking place basically is trying to satisfy those disputes and try to find out what would be acceptable for a code of conduct,” he said.

The presidential office softened Duterte’s comment about war days after he made it. His spokesman Ernesto Abella said on the office website the two sides would keep seeking peace.

“President Duterte was forthright about its economic rights awarded by the Arbitral Court in The Hague, a claim the Chinese leader said they would vigorously contest given their historic claims to the area,” Abella said. “Given this complexity, both parties agreed to pursue a more peaceful resolution to the matter that satisfies both our sovereign and economic rights.”

China rejected the ruling, but to minimize its impact the government it wants to talk with the other countries, in some cases offering them aid. Duterte received pledges of $24 billion in aid and investment from China in October.

Beijing and the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) agreed last week after 15 years of resistance â€" largely because of China -- to a framework for a code of conduct that would eventually prevent mishaps in the sea that’s prized for fisheries and fossil fuel reserves.

“It’s highly unlikely that there there’s going to be an escalation of tension (that would) lead to physical confrontation regarding the territorial and sovereignty issues,” said Andrew Yang, secretary-general with the Chinese Council of Advanced Policy Studies think tank in Taiwan.

“It’s not like China is the sole recipient of this," Brown said.

A mellow Chinese response to the comment about war could in turn allay any fear in other countries about their own relations with Beijing. Each has its own way of handling China based on historical relations, Batongbacal said.

Beijing has increasingly valued its relations in Southeast Asia since July 2016, when a world arbitration court ruled against the legal basis to much of China’s maritime claim. China had incensed countries in Southeast Asia with a half-decade of building artificial islands and passing coast guard vessels through contested waters.

Last week Duterte traveled to Russia to sign a series of agreements. Russia is a traditional Chinese ally that like China was not on Manila’s roster of friends a year ago when Duterte took office.

Duterte, a populist known for being loose with language, also has a reputation for making comments against other countries. He has slammed the United Nations, the United States and the European Union over their criticism of an estimated 6,000 to 7,000 extrajudicial killings in the Philippine anti-drug campaign.

“I think as long as there’s not any substantive action on the part of the Philippines to follow through with any of its rhetoric, they’re willing to let it slide at least to some extent because Duterte seems to be badmouthing everyone,” said Maxfield Brown, business intelligence associate at the consultancy Dezan Shira & Associates in Manila.

Beijing claims about 90 percent of the 3.5-million-square-kilometer South China Sea, including the Spratlys. The claim overlaps the exclusive economic zones of the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia and Vietnam. Xi and Duterte were talking about oil drilling in the Spratlys at a meeting in Beijing when Xi made the comments, Philippine media say.

China probably did not want the war comment disclosed and political experts say Beijing may speak more cautiously with Duterte’s government in the future.

But analysts say Beijing will avoid any retaliation for the disclosure because it sees Duterte trying to improve relations after a stormy past. The president has thundered against China’s major global rival and former Philippine colonizer, the United States. He has visited China twice, and the two sides sat down this month to start working out their maritime differences.

China Will Still Like the Philippines Despite Reported War Threat

May 29, 2017
Ralph Jenning

FILE - Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte gestures while addressing the media following the conclusion of the 30th ASEAN Leaders' Summit in Manila, Philippines.

TAIPEI â€" China will keep working toward a stronger friendship with the Philippines, which it sees as a valuable new ally in Southeast Asia, despite the Philippine president’s comment that Beijing’s top leader once threatened war over a disputed tract of sea, analysts say.

Duterte told a Philippine coast guard unit on May 19 that Chinese President Xi Jinping this month had threatened “war” if the Philippines “forced the issue” over sovereignty of the Spratly Islands, an archipelago of tiny features in the South China Sea, according to widespread media reports in the Philippines.

“They cannot say anything either way, because it would look bad for them,” said Jay Batongbacal, director of the Institute for Maritime Affairs and Law of the Sea at the University of the Philippines in Metro Manila. “So I think it’s difficult for them and probably (they) won’t say anything and just avoid it altogether.”

My ancestral home in Valencia is the very home that he had built the foundation upon.

PS. Good to see you still keeping this thread up to date. ::)

Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez earlier said that plunder has been stricken off from the list of crimes punishable by death as decided in a caucus of House members.

House Justice Committee Chairman and Oriental Mindoro Rep. Rey Umali explained that unlike other heinous crimes in the measure, plunder is not a “crime against a person.”

“Iba kasi ‘yung plunder,” he had said. “Although it’s a grave offense also, pero kasi ‘pag plunder, what you’re talking [about] is pera,” he said.

“‘Yung iba[ng crimes], life talaga [ang naaapektuhan]â€"rape, murder… they’re really crimes against a person. ‘Yung plunder, also a crime, yes, but it involves money than individuals,” he added.

Lacson tells House: Plunder kills more than murder

February 13, 2017
By KATHRINA CHARMAINE ALVAREZ, GMA News

Senator Panfilo Lacson on Monday questioned the decision of the House of Representatives to remove plunder from the list of crimes punishable by death in the death penalty bill.

“Nagtataka nga ako bakit inalis nila ang plunder eh capital offense yan...Mas marami pang pinapatay ang magnanakaw kesa sa murderer,” Lacson, chairman of the Senate public order committee, said.

“Ang murderer isa lang ang pinatay, pero ang magnanakaw maraming namatay sa gutom dahil sa pagnanakaw,” he said.

Lacson is one of the authors of the reimposition of death penalty.

Bishop David’s statement in English:

It is difficult to discuss the Bible with fundamentalists, the type who would quote a verse or two from the Scriptures and not mind the other passages that may not be supportive of their opinion.

The Word of God was gradually revealed to us from the Old Testament to the New Testament, culminating with the incarnation of God’s Word in Jesus Christ. We were like children who matured in stages. In Jesus we’re supposed to see the highest level of maturity of our humanity. He is our criterion and standard for reading the Bible as Word of God.

If we use the Bible as a mere justification for our personal opinions (such as on death penalty) then we might as well return to the morality of slavery, misogyny, death penalty for homosexuals and the ancient laws of purity and impurity, just because we also have them in the Bible. The Bible has been used much too often to justify even the most inhuman and ungodly things.

If Senator Pacquiao is convinced that the death penalty is a useful deterrent for criminality, he is entitled to his personal opinion. His right to express it will be protected in a democracy. But I just wish he didn’t have to justify it using the Bible.

If Christ were in favor of death penalty, perhaps he would have been the first to cast a stone at the woman caught in adultery in John 8:1-11. Instead of dying for sinners, he would have just killed them all instead.

But isn’t John 3:16 a favorite of Evangelicals? “For God so loved the world he gave us his only Son so that all who believe might not perish but might have eternal life. God did not send his Son to the world to condemn the world but that the world might be saved through him.”

I am willing to have a discussion with the good senator about the Bible if he is willing and sincere in his effort to understand the Bible as Word of God.

Jesus vs stoning to death

David also cited a Bible passage: John 8: 1-11. Here, Jesus said something that stopped scribes and Pharisees from imposing the death penalty on a woman caught in adultery.

Jesus told them, “Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” In response, the scribes and Pharisees “went away one by one,” the Bible said.

David said: “If Christ were in favor of death penalty, perhaps he would have been the first to cast a stone at the woman caught in adultery in John 8:1-11. Instead of dying for sinners, he would have just killed them all instead.”

He then cited another Bible passage, the popular John 3: 16, and the verse that immediately followed it: “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him.”

David said, “I am willing to have a discussion with the good senator about the Bible if he is willing and sincere in his effort to understand the Bible as Word of God.”

The boxer is now a first-time senator who, as Sarangani representative, was known for his habitual absences in Congress.

Reacting to Pacquiao’s statements on the death penalty, David said that “it is difficult to discuss the Bible with fundamentalists,” or those “who would quote a verse or two from the Scriptures, and not mind the other passages that may not be supportive of their opinion.”

David said: “The Word of God was gradually revealed to us from the Old Testament to the New Testament, culminating with the incarnation of God’s Word in Jesus Christ. Pacquiao: God ‘is a God of justice’

David issued his statement after Pacquiao on Monday, August 8, cited Bible passages to justify the death penalty.

The senator said Genesis 9: 6, for instance, states: “Whoever sheds human blood, by humans shall their blood be shed; for in the image of God, has God made mankind.”

Pacquiao said, “Having read the Bible on a regular basis, I am convinced that God is not just a God of mercy, but he is also a God of justice.”

Pacquiao is a former Catholic whom David, in 2012, eyed as a potential partner “in promoting the reading of the Bible among Catholics.”

A priest for more than 30 years, David chaired the Commission on Biblical Apostolate of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines from 2009 to 2015.

David, a graduate of the Jesuit-run Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines, also holds a doctorate in sacred theology from the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium.

Born in Betis, Guagua, Pampanga, the 57-year-old David served as auxiliary bishop of San Fernando, Pampanga, from 2006 until Pope Francis named him Caloocan bishop in 2015.

Bishop to Pacquiao: Don’t use Bible to justify death penalty

‘The Bible has been used much too often to justify even the most inhuman and ungodly things,’ one of the Catholic Church’s leading Bible scholars says

Date: February 9, 2017
Author: Defend the Catholic Faith

MANILA, Philippines â€" One of the Catholic Church’s leading Bible scholars, Caloocan Bishop Pablo Virgilio David, criticized Senator Manny Pacquiao for using the Bible to justify the death penalty during his first privilege speech.

“If Senator Pacquiao is convinced that the death penalty is a useful deterrent for criminality, he is entitled to his personal opinion. His right to express it will be protected in a democracy. But I just wish he didn’t have to justify it using the Bible,” David said in a statement prepared for Church-run Radyo Veritas on Tuesday, August 9.

In his statement, which he sent to Rappler on Tuesday evening, David stressed the need to interpret Scriptures in the proper context, with Jesus as “our criterion and standard for reading the Bible as Word of God.”

A tender prayer by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

This little-known prayer was written by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry in one of the roughest periods of his life.

’Lord, I’m not praying for miracles and visions, I’m only asking for strength for my days. Teach me the art of small steps.

Make me clever and resourceful, so that I can find important discoveries and experiences among the diversity of days.

Help me use my time better. Present me with the sense to be able to judge whether something is important or not.

I pray for the power of discipline and moderation, not only to run throughout my life, but also to live my days reasonably, and observe unexpected pleasures and heights.

Save me from the naive belief that everything in life has to go smoothly. Give me the sober recognition that difficulties, failures, fiascos, and setbacks are given to us by life itself to make us grow and mature.

Send me the right person at the right moment, who will have enough courage and love to utter the truth.

I know that many problems solve themselves, so please teach me patience.

You know how much we need friendship. Make me worthy of this nicest, hardest, riskiest and most fragile gift of life.

Give me enough imagination to be able to share with someone a little bit of warmth, in the right place, at the right time, with words or with silence.

Spare me the fear of missing out on life.

Do not give me the things I desire, but the things I need.

Teach me the art of small steps.

To be fair, the Philippines has also made progress in bringing corruption down, too. But it is still more corrupt than Indonesia, slowing down development and deployment of infrastructure projects like the Manila airport, and constraining the country’s economic growth.

“Indeed the Manila international airport is a prime example of how cronyism and ineptitude has retarded economic growth,” explains Ruchir Sharma. “Recently voted one of the worst airports in the world, Manila has three terminals, but only the 1980s terminal is fully open to international airlines. The second terminal dates to the 1990s and is used by a local tycoon who doesn’t want to share it with foreign airlines; the third was finished in 2002 but didn’t open until 2008, and then only to local airlines because of ongoing construction contract disputes that still scare foreign airlines away.”

Unless Manila deals with corruption, the wealth gap between Filipinos and Indonesians will continue to grow ever bigger.

What has Indonesia done right that Philippines’ hasn’t?

To begin with, it has managed to shake off the economic and political instability that came with the breaking of the Asian financial crisis â€" a crisis which hit Jakarta hard, with GDP falling close to 20 percent over the 1997-1998 periods. Moreover, Indonesia managed to bring its government debt down, which accounts roughly for 60 percent of that of Philippines.

Then there’s the battle against corruption and cronyism, big killers of emerging market growth, though it still remains high compared to that of China and India.

How Indonesians Became Richer Than Filipinos

FEB 4, 2017

An Indonesian boom sparked by growing economic stability and falling corruption and debt levels has helped Indonesians catch up and become better off than Filipinos in per capita income in recent years.

That hasn’t surprised those following emerging markets closely, though the Philippines' equity market has outperformed Indonesia's in the last ten years--see table. Nor has it been a surprise seeing the Philippines leave behind the old glory days of the 1960s, and be bypassed by the one Asian country after another in per capita GDP.

“There was a time when the Philippines was seen as an Asian trendsetter, and fashionable young Malays would sport the barong, the formal embroidered shirt favored by Filipinos, to look cool,” writes Ruchir Sharma in Breakout Nations (New York: W.W.Norton & Company, 2012, p. 138). “But that was back in the 1960s, when the Philippines had the second highest per capita income in Asia, behind only Japan. The nation’s fortunes shifted since then. By the 1970s South Korea and Taiwan had passed the Philippines in per capita income terms. Malaysia and Thailand followed in the 1980s and China in the 1990s. Then in 2009, in a moment the Manila elite thought it would never see, Indonesia’s boom made Indonesians richer than Filipinos for the first time in history.”
