Guardian Angel,
watch over those whose names you can read in my heart.
Guard over them with every care
and make their way easy and their labours fruitful.
Dry their tears if they weep;
sanctify their joys;
raise their courage if they weaken;
restore their hope if they lose heart,
their health if they be ill,
truth if they err,
repentance if they fail.

Amen.

Thou hast sorrowed the spirit that loved thee, And watched o'er thy footsteps for years: Thou hast made me at last sigh o'er thee, In secret, in silence, and tears.

For my Father in Heaven I loved thee, For His sake have I guarded thy ways. Return, O return, I implore thee, Him to love, to serve, and to praise.

O'er thy pathway through life still I hover. Thee to comfort, to solace, to cheer; With the love of a fond, saving brother, Through this desert of trial and fear.

Oh! When shall I clasp thee, how fondly And bear thee, all dangers no past, To the arms of God Who dies for thee To our home in the heavens at last!

Thou knowest how often thou didst deplore my sins, animate me to repentance, and intercede with God for my pardon.
Ah! why have I so little merited a continuance of thy zealous efforts for my salvation?
Why have I so often stained my soul by sin, and thereby rendered myself unworthy of the presence and protection of an angel, of so pure a spirit as thou art, who never sinned?

But as my ingratitude and thoughtlessness have not lessened thy charitable interest for my salvation, so neither shall they diminish my confidence in thy goodness, nor prevent me from abandoning myself to thy care, since God Himself has entrusted thee with the charge of my soul.

God sends afflictions, but nothing comes from the divine hand that is not useful to those souls who fear Him. Be happy if they come and receive them with a heart filled with filial love, because God sends them with a heart that is paternally concerned with your perfection. He wishes to purify and refine His holy love in you. Think often about the duration of eternity and do not get upset about the mishaps of this transitory and mortal life.

(Letters 1982; O. XXI, p. 21)

Very poignant and deep. Sometimes, we tend to focus on the aspirations and our sufferings here in Earth, forgetting that our lives in Earth is finite. It would benefit us to focus on living a Christ-Centered Life, and building our soul, preparing ourselves for the eternity that awaits us after we leave our earthly bodies.

Lord My God,
Take away all my anxieties, my worries, and my fears this day. All things that do not benefit my eternal soul.
Replace these torments, O Lord My God, with the Peace of Your Grace. Enliven my soul, My Lord God, and enflame my faith in you.
I invite the Holy Spirit, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, into my soul, enrich my faith in you , Lord.

That whatever may happen to me this day, I will remember your promises and your Saving Power.

Bible Study / Re: The Dignity of the Human Person
August 28, 2013, 02:35:55 AM
ARTICLE 1: MAN: THE IMAGE OF GOD

1701 "Christ, . . . in the very revelation of the mystery of the Father and of his love, makes man fully manifest to himself and brings to light his exalted vocation." 2 It is in Christ, "the image of the invisible God," 3 that man has been created "in the image and likeness" of the Creator. It is in Christ, Redeemer and Savior, that the divine image, disfigured in man by the first sin, has been restored to its original beauty and ennobled by the grace of God. 4

1702 The divine image is present in every man. It shines forth in the communion of persons, in the likeness of the unity of the divine persons among themselves (cf. chapter two).

1703 Endowed with "a spiritual and immortal" soul, 5 the human person is "the only creature on earth that God has willed for its own sake." 6 From his conception, he is destined for eternal beatitude.

1704 The human person participates in the light and power of the divine Spirit. By his reason, he is capable of understanding the order of things established by the Creator. By free will, he is capable of directing himself toward his true good. He finds his perfection "in seeking and loving what is true and good." 7

1705 By virtue of his soul and his spiritual powers of intellect and will, man is endowed with freedom, an "outstanding manifestation of the divine image." 8

1706 By his reason, man recognizes the voice of God which urges him "to do what is good and avoid what is evil." 9 Everyone is obliged to follow this law, which makes itself heard in conscience and is fulfilled in the love of God and of neighbor. Living a moral life bears witness to the dignity of the person.

1707 "Man, enticed by the Evil One, abused his freedom at the very beginning of history." 10 He succumbed to temptation and did what was evil. He still desires the good, but his nature bears the wound of original sin. He is now inclined to evil and subject to error:

Man is divided in himself. As a result, the whole life of men, both individual and social, shows itself to be a struggle, and a dramatic one, between good and evil, between light and darkness. 11

1708 By his Passion, Christ delivered us from Satan and from sin. He merited for us the new life in the Holy Spirit. His grace restores what sin had damaged in us.

1709 He who believes in Christ becomes a son of God. This filial adoption transforms him by giving him the ability to follow the example of Christ. It makes him capable of acting rightly and doing good. In union with his Savior, the disciple attains the perfection of charity which is holiness. Having matured in grace, the moral life blossoms into eternal life in the glory of heaven.

Bible Study / The Dignity of the Human Person
August 28, 2013, 02:34:23 AM
Catechism of the Catholic Church

CHAPTER ONE: THE DIGNITY OF THE HUMAN PERSON

1700 The dignity of the human person is rooted in his creation in the image and likeness of God (article 1); it is fulfilled in his vocation to divine beatitude (article 2). It is essential to a human being freely to direct himself to this fulfillment (article 3). By his deliberate actions (article 4), the human person does, or does not, conform to the good promised by God and attested by moral conscience (article 5). Human beings make their own contribution to their interior growth; they make their whole sentient and spiritual lives into means of this growth (article 6). With the help of grace they grow in virtue (article 7), avoid sin, and if they sin they entrust themselves as did the prodigal son 1 to the mercy of our Father in heaven (article 8 ). In this way they attain to the perfection of charity.

Purgatory fire will be more dreadful than whatever torments can be seen, imagined, or endured in this world. St. Caesarius of Arles

'Very few men can accurately recognize all their own faults; indeed, only those can do this whose intellect is never torn away from the remembrance of God. Our bodily eyes, when healthy, can see everything, even gnats and mosquitoes flying about in the air; but when they are clouded by some discharge, they see large objects only indistinctly and small things not at all. Similarly if the soul, through attentiveness, reduces the blindness caused by the love of this world, it will consider its slightest faults to be very grave and will continually shed tears with deep thankfulness. For it is written, "The righteous shall give thanks unto Thy name" (Ps. 140:13). But if the soul persists in its worldly disposition, even though it commits a murder or some other act deserving severe punishment, it takes little notice; and it is quite unable to discern its other faults, often considering them to be signs of progress, and in its wretchedness it is not ashamed to defend them heatedly.'

In those days, being Chinese was looked down upon. Many native Filipinos used to hold a racist and prejudiced outlook towards the Chinese. For being so successful.

Now a days, it's reverse, (here in chinese soil) thou they deny it, you can feel it.

It depends on the family and the people, i would say. My grandmother was open minded enough to marry a non-Chinese. There are Chinese-Filipino families that are accepting of marrying local people and assimilating. Why, most of the Chinese-Filipinos have converted to the local religion of the land (Roman Catholicism) , some are more fluent in Tagalog or Binisaya than Cantonese, Hokkien or Mandarin.

But there are others who prefer to keep everything Chinese. This is true, and it is in part due to the conservatism found in Chinese family culture. There is an emphasis in knowing one's identity and history. It is built within the Chinese psyche, particularly in reference to honoring one's ancestors and progenitors.

However, I would say that for the most part, the Chinese-Filipinos have assimilated into the Filipino Culture.

And what a great fusion it is. 8)

You can't blame the Chinese for succeeding since not only do they have those good qualities but the Chinese, are one of the ancient civilizations that provided the world the most crucial technological innovations which other ancient civilizations have ever surpassed...

Yes, you're right about the historical aspect. The Chinese influenced the modern Philippine culture through language, food, even technological aspects. That is what makes the modern Filipino identity a rather unique and beautiful amalgamation of different races, cultures, and language. There is a fusion of Malay, Chinese, Spanish, and other asian ethnicities, which results in the Filipino identity.

China and the Philippines have strong bond be it historical and geographical proximity. We look forward to a prosperous future with each other. May God Bless the Philippines and China. May our two peoples always share and exude brotherly affection and peace. 8)

The Origin of the Surname Tan

èš

The surname came from the ancient State of Tan which was located in the western part of what is now Shandong Province. During the Spring and Autumn Period, this state was conquered by the neighbouring State of Qi. The court changed their surname to Tan in remembrance of their defeated homeland, and later prospered in Hunan Province.

For history lovers, the State of Tan existed  from 1046 till 684 BCE. Some 1000 years before the birth of Jesus Christ, the state of Tan was already an existing power in Imperial China.

Before Rome began as a civilization, the State of Tan was already there.

LIN / LIM in Philippine Society

Filipinos of Chinese descent with this surname mostly use the Hokkien spelling "Lim", as the majority have Fujianese ancestry. It is sometimes found in hispanicised compound surnames such as "Limtiaco"; this type of Filipino surname is often derived from the original name of a Spanish-era immigrant patriarch.

The Origin of the LIN Surname

King Zhou of Shang (reigned 1154 BC to 1122 BC), the last king of the Shang dynasty, had three uncles advising him and his administration. The king's uncles were Bi Gan (also spelled Pi Kan), Qi Zi, and Wei Zi. Together the three men were known as "The Three Kindhearted Men of Shang" in the kingdom. Bi Gan was the son of Prince Ding, son of Emperor Shang and, thus, was King Zhou's uncle.

Unfortunately, Zhou was a cruel king, and the state's citizens suffered tremendously. His three uncles could not persuade him to change his ways. Failing in their duty to advise the king, Wei Zi resigned. Qi Zi faked insanity and was relieved of his post. Only Bi Gan stayed on to continue advising the king to change his ways. "Servants who are afraid of being killed and refrain from telling the truth are not righteous," he said. This put him in danger of incurring the king's wrath. Bi Gan stayed at the palace for three days and nights to try to persuade the bloodthirsty and immoral king to mend his ways.

The stubborn king would not relent and had his uncle, Bi Gan, arrested for treason. Upon hearing this, his pregnant wife (surname Chen) escaped into the forest to protect her unborn child from death. She knew, in time, the king would execute Bi Gan and his entire family. The baby was born in the forest. Alone with no one to help, she grabbed hold of two trees and gave birth to a baby boy whom she named Jian. When she reached the nearest town, she gave her child the surname Lin (Chinese character depicted by two trees).

Before long, Shang Zhou was overthrown and killed by Zhou Wu Wang (Zhou Dynasty, 1134 BC to 256 BC). Zhou Wu Wang knew about the courageous court adviser Bi Gan and sought his wife and child. When he found them, he honoured them in respect of Bi Gan. The mother and child were restored back into the royal family. The new king conferred the surname Lin (meaning woods or forest) on Bi Gan's son, because he was born in the woods.

How to Treat Your Chest Pain

Sit, stay calm, and rest. Your symptoms will often go away soon after you stop activity.

If you are lying down, sit up in bed. Try deep breathing to help with the stress or anxiety.

If you do not have nitroglycerin and your symptoms are not gone after resting for 5 minutes, call 911 right away.

Your doctor may have prescribed nitroglycerin tablets or spray for severe attacks. Sit or lie down when you use your tablets or spray.

When using your tablet, place the pill between your cheek and gum. You can also put it under your tongue. Allow it to dissolve. Do not swallow it.

When using your spray, do not shake the container. Hold the container close to your open mouth. Spray the medicine onto or under your tongue. Do not inhale or swallow the medicine.

Wait 5 minutes after the first dose of nitroglycerin. If your symptoms are not better, are worse, or return after going away, call 911 right away. The operator who answers will give you further advice about what to do.

(Note: your doctor may have given you different advice about taking nitroglycerin when you have chest pain or pressure.)

Do not smoke, eat, or drink for 5 - 10 minutes after taking nitroglycerin. If you do smoke, you should try to quit. Your doctor can help.

Health and Food / Controlling your high blood pressure
August 27, 2013, 10:50:52 PM
When Is Your Blood Pressure a Concern?

If your blood pressure is high, you need to lower it and keep it under control. Your has 2 numbers. One or both of these numbers can be too high.

The top number is called the systolic blood pressure. This reading is too high if it is 140 or higher.

The bottom number is called the diastolic blood pressure. It is too high if it is 90 or higher.

You are more likely to have high blood pressure as you get older. This is because your blood vessels become stiffer as you age. When that happens, your blood pressure goes up. High blood pressure can lead to stroke, heart attack, heart failure, kidney disease, and early death.

If you have heart or kidney problems, diabetes, or if you had a stroke, your doctor may want your blood pressure to be even lower than people who do not have these conditions.

What is EPA and DHA?

Within the body omega-3 fatty acids are converted to DHA and EPA (docosahexaenoic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid, respectively). DHA and EPA are highly unsaturated fats that play very important roles in the vision development and brain function of infants.

One study found significantly lower amounts of EPA in the cells of patients who had attempted suicide, suggesting that omega-3 fatty acids may actually play a role in suicide prevention. A lack of DHA has been associated with Alzheimer disease, attention disorders, phenylketonuria, cystic fibrosis and other diseases. Blue green algae is a good source of EPA and DHA.

What is Omega-6 Fatty Acid?

Omega-6 fatty acid (Linoleic Acid) combined with omega-3 fatty acid produces many of the health benefits described above, but the trickiest part about playing the fatty acid game is that it is best to eat them in the right amounts.

You should be eating about twice as much omega-6 as omega-3, so that your omega-6 to omega-3 ratio is 2:1, but in today’s world of fast food, frozen entrees, and high calorie snacks, it is not uncommon for most people to actually be getting about 15 times more omega-6 than omega-3. Washington DC’s center for Genetics, Nutrition and Health suggest that eating omega-6 and omega-3 in the wrong proportions may actually negate the health benefits.

The best sources of omega-6 are seeds, nuts and grains and green leafy vegetables, like lettuce, broccoli, purslane and kale, and in certain raw vegetable oils. Care should be taken to use raw cold pressed vegetable oils because cooking destroys the benefits of the fatty acids.

What is Omega-9 Fatty Acid?

Omega-9, or monounsaturated oleic and stearic acid, is a non essential fatty acid produced naturally by the body whenever there is enough of either Omega 3 and 6 essential fatty acids.

However, if you do not have enough omega 3 and omega 6, then you must get omega 9 from your diet.

This fatty acid plays a role in promoting heart health by supporting healthy, balanced cholesterol levels and improving immune function.

What is Omega-3 Fatty Acid?

Omega-3 fatty acid (Alpha-linolenic acid) is an essential fatty acid that plays an important role in brain function and may help you fight against cardiovascular disease [1]. The American Heart Association recommends a diet in which fatty fish, like salmon, herring, sardines and tuna are consumed at least twice a week.

While these foods are high in omega-3 fatty acid, I personally do not agree with this recommendation as fish can be contaminated and may be high in mercury, which can have detrimental health effects. Plus, I believe a raw food diet consisting of little to no meat is better for the human body.
#3473
You’ve probably heard the terms “fatty acid” and “omega 3″ before, but do you know what a fatty acid is or why your body needs it? What about the different types of fatty acids, what foods you can naturally find them in and how much your body needs to live a long, healthy life?

Fatty acids are important for all systems of the body to function normally, including your skin, respiratory system, circulatory system, brain and organs. There are two fatty acids, termed essential fatty acids (EFA) that your body does not produce on its own. EFAs have to be ingested.

The two essential fatty acids that the human body cannot produce are the omega-3 fatty acid and omega-6 fatty acid, which are important for brain development, immune system function and blood pressure regulation.

Aggressive behavior

There are many definitions of aggressive behavior. However, different researchers agree
that it is a behavior that is intended to harm another person (3). The most common classification of aggressive behavior is reactive and proactive aggression (3). Reactive aggression is behavior that occurs in response to specific situational conditions, such as threats and provocations, and is accompanied by
changes in the physiological and emotional level. Proactive aggression is intentional behavior caused by anticipation of a desirable goal, and is controlled mainly by external reinforcement (3). Bullying represents a form of aggressive behavior. It is a subset of proactive aggressive behavior. It occurs due to the anticipation of someone’s desirable goal or domination over others, such as abuse (4).

Abstract

The aim of this review was to provide an overview of research into the relationship between empathy and bullying. Therefore the review indicated a number of researches that show different effects of empathy on bullying, regarding the type of bullying, roles in bullying behavior, as well as gender. From a review of research it may be concluded that empathy significantly contributes to a reduction in various forms of violence. Most research indicates the importance of the affective component of empathy compared to the cognitive component. The results of research into the relationship of empathy and its role in bullying behavior were less consistent. For this reason, the review highlighted methodological difficulties in the study of bullying and empathy.

Conclusion

In conclusion it could be said that most studies show a negative correlation between empathy and various types
of violence. Furthermore, it is evident that different components of empathy have differing degrees of influence in direct and indirect forms of violent behavior.

I was trained as a psychologist in the
1970s. I liked psychoanalysis, especially the
ideas of Karen Horney, M.D. I thought that
if I was completely analyzed, a la Horney,
that I would be completely mentally hea
lthy. I had been exposed to some “New Age”
thought in my training-but I thought psychoana
lysis was the answer.
Religion and prayer
were under no consideration as relevant to
my life or the thera
py I conducted with
patients.

As I entered the 1980s, the New Age Material was gaining ground.
Psychoanalysis wasn’t enough for me. I practi
ced transcendental
meditation, read the
“Seth material” which said that we “create
our own reality” as pa
rt of “All That Is”
(God). Thus, my new concept of God was that
we are all God (not to be confused with
the ego). However, prayer is
not addressed in this philosophy
. Rather, releasing negative
beliefs and affirming positive beliefs to replace
them was suggested. We are told that we
“are much more than we think we are.” In ot
her words we are more than just bodies with
egos. This was an integration of body mind a
nd spirit, but I did not really see it as
spiritual. I saw it as psychological. There wa
s some change in my therapeutic outlook,
but it did not include prayer.

As the author of two books on prayer and psychological healing, it is hard for me
to believe the level of skepticism about prayer in the year 2006. In the Spring of this year,
a new scientific study was released, suggesting that prayer is not really very effective.
Many of my skeptical friends brought it to my attention. “What do you think?” They asked. They were really probing me to see if I had finally come to my senses and give up on this God and prayer stuff. Of course, it did nothing of the kind. This paper is an answer to the negative study and an update of my ideas on prayer and healing.

This morning I'm enjoying my vacation. Yes, I am off till Thursday. hehehe. Lipay lipay pod intawon ko gamay. I plan on working on a paper that is due Wednesday. Interestingly enough it is going to be about conflict in the work place and strategies that can be enacted to reduce conflict and/or control conflict when it arises.

I already prepared a nice cup of coffee to help me in this noble task.

Yours Truly,

To my beloved friends,

I will entreat you all to heed the words from Holy Scripture [2 Timothy  2:23-24]:

"Don't have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels. And the Lord's servant must not quarrel; instead, he must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful."

God Bless and let's focus on building healthy relationships that are Christ-Centered.

Blessings and Peace 8)
