PhilHealth assures financial ‘health’ despite DBM arrears

The Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth) assured its members that there is nothing to be worried about in terms of its financial stability.

The National Health Insurance Fund remains stable and it can very well provide for the hospitalization benefits of PhilHealth members from the different member categories.

PhilHealth’s investment portfolio as of July 31 stands at P91 billion. Though there is a need to step-up collection efforts to ensure the sustained life of the fund, especially with the recent enhancement in inpatient care benefits without any immediate increase in premium contributions. Thus its recent demand for the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) to remit the government’s counterpart contributions to state employees. (PIA)

Cough of more than two weeks may be TB or tuberculosis. This was according to Dr. Enrique Sancho, Department of Health (DOH-7) Regional Program Coordinator of the Tuberculosis Prevention and Control Program.

Sancho said tuberculosis is a highly infectious airborne disease and could easily be spread to others but the danger posed is when one is asymptomatic of the illness except for the chronic cough.

Common manifestations of TB are cough of at least two weeks, fever, blood-tinged sputum and weight loss. The chronic cough alone should be a warning not to be complacent and to immediately seek medical check-up.

The DOH-7 official said one can just go to their barangay health center to have a sputum exam to determine the presence of the bacteria mainy Myobacterium tuberculosis that usually attacks the lungs. The sputum exam is given for free in the barangay health centers.

The Month of August is celebrated as National Lung Month where TB is one of the top common lung diseases afflicting Filipinos after pneumonia and lung cancer.

It’s been some weeks now since the talk about a Nobel Prize for Michael Jackson, the King of Pop who invented and reinvented himself so much so many times that in the end nothing remained of the cute, lovable lead singer of the Jackson 5 who poured out his heart and soul in the song “Ben”, later to capture the imaginations and affections of a worldwide audience, and much later yet, earning the scorn and derision of a world gone cynical and indifferent to his antics. Yes, antics, gimmicks, etc. How else was one to take and accept his countless facial reconstructions, nose lifts, skin bleaches and hair straightenings? Vetilaygo or no, why did MJ have to turn himself white, in the process becoming the reincarnation of his persona in his greatest video and album, “Thriller?”

Only MJ himself could have answered that. Not his family, not his friends who are loyal to him. True to the spirit of showbiz, MJ’s facial improvements were not confined to him alone. His mother, father and siblings must have undergone nose jobs at one time or another. Witness how their noses have become pointy, contrary to the rounded noses of the Black race. The Jacksons were a pleasant-looking Black family, but somehow they weren’t satisfied with that kind of look the way other blacks are. And Michael just had to be White. What is this need that pushed MJ to change his appearance completely? How, where and when did it all start?

This is mere conjecture, but I have a theory. Back in the late 80’s, when I first visited the US, there was a rumor circulating that MJ had undergone surgery to keep his voice from growing mature as he grew up, thus, keeping it perennially high-pitched, piping clear, innocent-sounding. This was a surgery that was supposed to involve his sex organs. I remember being horrified at the time: Wouldn’t that mean some kind of castration, the way ancient cultures castrated men who were designated to guard the harems of sultans? All this, for the sake of keeping MJ’s audiences happy and faithful to him? But what about his life, wouldn’t that be affected by this operation? Or was he already effeminate, the reason his own father, whom MJ hated until the day he died â€" the father was excluded from his will â€" abused him, perhaps with beatings to make him more masculine? If this was so, MJ’s operation was just an affirmation of his natural sexuality. There is the added insight that MJ as a young boy was a loner; while his brothers tussled with each other and ran about the house in rambunctious play, young Michael would steal out by himself and sit in a swing, watching the world go by. Which is probably why, deprived of a normal carefree boyhood, he opted later to take up the cause of children, inviting them to Neverland to enjoy his rides and menagerie, even his bed. That’s how he earned for himself the tainted name of “pedophile” which attached itself to him after the celebrated sexual abuse case which he settled out of court. Despite the case being dropped by the court. Of course this is all conjecture born out of a long-forgotten rumor.

MJ is a mystery and will probably remain so for a long time, the sad haunted look in the eyes of the adorable black boy morphed into the guarded look of the white-faced, pink-cheeked, red-lipped singing icon with his signature long, curly but not kinky raven-black hair, all decked out in the garish regimentals of his concert costumes:a guarded look that did not give anything away, least of all the loneliness of the boy who sang “Ben” to his best friend, a rat. But one remembers that Michael in his heyday, made efforts to unite the world through his musicâ€":Heal the World” and “We are the World” (co-written with Lionel Richie) are just obvious efforts towards this, on top of the world tours he undertook in which all races he came in contact with seemed united in the enjoyment of his music.

For my part, MJ was a genius who gave great performances: both singer and dancer whose performance can take one’s breath away even just by watching his videos. He gave his all in every concert: his perfect spins, moonwalks and sidewinders; his voice the clear cloudless falsetto of his youth heralding the completion of his act; the chords of his finales crashing with such precision that one can only gape in wonder!

But in death, Michael has become the embodiment of The Great Black American Tragedy. Being Black, he strove to be White. His voice, high and childish, does not proclaim his Blackness but accentuates an androgeneity: it is neither tinkly female nor deeply male. Without that operation, MJ’s voice could have proclaimed his blackness. His adoration of the two idols of his lifetime also point to another ambivalence: Diana Ross, Black Goddess Supreme; and Elizabeth Taylor, White Beauty once proclaimed the Most Beautiful Actress in the World. In this he was telling the world that he preferred to be both black and white. And his fans, both black and white, adored him for that. The whites, because he wanted to be like them; the blacks, because he epitomized their desire to be white. Underneath the triumph and glory of blacks, including the presidency of the greatest power on earth, there is probably a deeply hidden yearning to be white, to belong, completely, absolutely belong, to a land that is White in the universal consciousness.

In the end, it all falls into place to look at MJ as some kind of universal symbol: neither black nor white, he was both; neither man nor woman, he was both; neither grown man nor child, Peter Pan-like, he was both. Androgynous genius, Man-child, the white overlay hiding the black skin of his race.

So now we say, Peace be with you, Jacko. May we, in the fullness of Time, accept you and your strangeness as ours, human and flawed but striving for glory.

LGU Philippines / This Day In Yellow
August 22, 2009, 01:26:46 AM
Today, August 21, 2009 is the 26th death anniversary of Ninoy Aquino. What are we doing differently this year to commemorate it?

A lot!

Fresh from mourning the death of his wife Cory, the entire nation is remembering Ninoy’s heroism with more passion than in the last quarter of a century of death anniversaries.

There will definitely be more people at Manila Memorial Park to visit the conjugal graves. In the last 24 hours thousands already did.

In favorite rally points around the country, we expect thicker crowds too.

Today we also launch Araw Ng Dilaw.

Here’s a text of the radio spiel distributed to radio stations all over the country, by various civil society groups:

“Sa Araw ng Dilaw, wear something yellow. Light a yellow candle, to remember Ninoy and Cory’s Love for the Filipinos. And if you’re on the road today, keep the flame of Ninoy and Cory burning. Along with a thousand other cars, switch your hazard lights from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. and spread the country’s Yellow Spark far and wide.”

This also spread like wildfire through text.

Araw Ng Dilaw is not just good for August 21, 2009. Civil society groups propose that the country make every Friday thereafter, Araw ng Dilaw.

People are encouraged to wear something yellow every Friday. Cars should also sport yellow ribbons, and if it is not too much to ask, we can keep the Friday evening habit of switching our yellow hazard lights (for those with cars). There are more ways of observing Araw Ng Dilaw than wearing yellow (in case it’s not a favorite color). This should not be a problem, Filipinos are born creative.

Sustaining the passion for change and immortalizing the principles of the Aquino couple is crucial. Hence Araw Ng Dilaw. Filipinos are intrinsically forgetful. We have an election to win in 2010 therefore Filipinos should not lose fire in aspiring for cleaner, honest and credible elections, the very democratic ideals the Aquino couple fought for.

Araw Ng Dilaw, because we need to be constantly reminded of the bigger picture before we drown (again) in our mundane, highly personal worlds.

And yellow is too glaring a color to ignore.

* * * * *

“Yellow” has had a bad worldwide, centuries-old reputation.

In the English Language, “Yellow” has been associated with jaundice and cowardice. Quoting Wikipedia, “Yellow” in American slang is the color of cowards. Yellow-bellied. Chicken. Sissy.

“Yellow” also means old, hence the expression “yellowed with age”.

Italians use “Yellow” to label crime stories. In the 1930’s when crime novels became a hit in the country, publishers used “Yellow” as the predominant book cover color. In China the term “yellow movie” can refer to pornographic film.

In my world, a yellow journalist is one who churns out sensationalized news stories. More importantly, yellow journalism misrepresents facts, sensationalizes and exploits news to maximize profits.

Yellow means bile and hepatitis.

Yellow is the international color of caution. Accident prone streets have lines colored yellow. Traffic signs are rendered in yellow to call attention to hazards.

Yellow is the color of jealousy.

But in the Philippines “Yellow” is the hue of change, social reform, and justice. It represents democracy and all the good things that come with freedom.

Yellow is our color of hope.

Health and Food / Cancer cells in our body?
August 22, 2009, 01:25:06 AM
Normal, healthy, persons do not have cancer cells in their body. That includes the general population at large.

The internet is recently flooded with a medical claim (allegedly from Johns Hopkins, which I doubt) that is scaring the public. Circulating in the email around the world is the statement that says “normally, we all have dormant cancer cells in our body.” Implied is the assertion that all healthy people are walking around with a time bomb within them, ready to explode.

This senseless, insensitive, and unkind fabrication is obviously the work of someone with an ignorant, or confused, if not twisted, mind.

The healthy person does not carry any cancer cell in their body, period. If every tissue in the body of a normal person is biopsied, or if a person who dies of any non-cancerous disease, like heart attack or stroke, or trauma, is autopsied from head to foot, no cancer cells will be found. The only exception to this is if the person had an undiagnosed cancer, which is incidentally found on autopsy, a finding that excludes this person from being healthy in the first place.

If that ridiculous claim were true, then each person would be carrying around (from birth to death) “dormant” cancer cells in his/her brain, head and neck, breast, lungs, liver, pancreas, kidneys, intestines, prostate, and other organs in the body.

Our creator was more intelligent and more sensible not to make that mistake of intentionally designing the human body with such a grotesque built-in defect in it. Even humans don’t do that when they design or build anything. God blessed us with a body that is a powerful generator, a great computer, with most efficient organs, a body amazingly functional and full of dexterity. The imperfections among us are caused by factors that are of our own (human) doings, even those congenital defects in some babies, etc., or illnesses we get due to our own recklessness and unhealthy lifestyle.

Therefore, I am saying that all healthy individuals, from birth to adulthood to their death, do NOT normally carry, or have, any cancer cells in their body, unless they develop a malignancy. If they abuse themselves and subject their body to carcinogens, substances or toxins that cause cancers, then the tissues of the organs involved (like the lungs among smokers, the esophagus or food pipe, and the liver, among alcoholics) could be so chronically irritated and damaged by the toxic agent for the cells of those tissues to change into cancer cells.

Normal Cells

The normal cells our body came with when we were born have a pre-determined growth pattern and final adult size, from infancy to adulthood. As the cells, tissues and organs attain their normal number and size, the cell growth ceases at the right time. That is why our organs, our body as a whole, have the average sizes and shapes, according to our genetic make-up. There is no run-away, uncontrolled, growth in cases of normal cells. Muscle cells are greater in mass and stronger among those who exercise daily, especially among body builders. Fat cells increase in number and size when we overeat and become overweight. But even these “growths” are still within the expected “norm.”

From time to time, as our activities and lifestyle “damage” our cells as a result of the wear and tear in our body, our older cells (including blood cells) die and are replaced by new cells efficiently and automatically. An example of this is our dead skin, which flakes off, to be replaced instantly by new skin. Worn out or dead cells in a normal body are constantly replaced with new ones almost every day. But all this happens in an organized, systematic, orderly, and “disciplined” process. Our body system’s self-protective and auto-control mechanisms are always in control maintaining our health. If we do something that will adversely alter this natural internal balance and harmony, then disease sets in.

Cancer Cells are Something Else

Cancer cells are different. They grow and divide with blatant disregard for the body’s needs and limitations. They do not stop reproducing. There is random multiplication and replication that it out of bounds, without order and direction. These cells become very aggressive, attacking tissues and organs nearby, as in malignant tumors, where in many cases even spread to, and destroy, distant organs (like in cancer of the lungs with metastases to the brains, bones, adrenals, etc).

Unless cancer cells are treated effectively to induce cure or remission when they first form, they are unstoppable in their growth and aggressiveness. This behavior and characteristic of cancer cells alone are a self-evident proof that normal healthy bodies do not have what is claimed as “dormant cancer cells.” If any cancer cell forms in a person’s body, it will continue to grow and multiply unceasingly and be clinically obvious in a matter of weeks or months in almost all cases.

Oncogenes

Normal (non-cancerous) cells have a regulated, well-controlled, cell division and growth, thanks to the genes that produce proteins that provide such auto-regulation and control. These are the proto-oncogenes and tumor-suppressor genes, which regulate the cell cycle and keep the cells in good control. Tumor-suppressor genes produce proteins that prevent the uncontrolled cell growth and abnormal cell division.

When the cells are constantly exposed to cancer-causing agents (either toxic substances, chemicals in food or drinks, excess sunlight, radiation, etc.), the body produces an abnormal proteins called oncogenes which cause the cells to lose their ability to control their regulation. The non-regulated cells then go wild and divide abnormally fast, uncontrolled, transforming the cells into cancer cells that lose their original characteristics and functions (like cancerous lungs tissues turning into a solid mass, losing their air-cells and ability to oxygenate blood). The uncontrolled growth and replication of the cancer cells lead to large space-occupying masses in the body, crowding out other organs and pressing on vitals blood vessels and nerves. The most adverse outcome of this malignant process is the transformation of the cancerous organ into a useless hard mass of tissues and the loss of original function of the organ, as in cancer of the lungs, liver, kidney, brain, breast, prostate, etc.

Conclusion

Normal, healthy, persons do not have cancer cells in their body. That includes the general population at large. Only individuals with a cancerous disease have cancers cells in them. And you can email this medical fact to your friends.

Knowing how deadly cancers can be, it behooves all of us to live a healthy lifestyle, and to be knowledgeable and keenly aware that cancer is best prevented. And if it still occurs, in spite of our diligence and discipline, early diagnosis and treatment could result in a cure. A regular medical check-up is a prudent prophylactic health strategy in our fight against diseases, especially against cancer.

ROXAS CITY â€" The Capiz provincial government under the leadership of Gov. Victor Tanco, Sr., gave a financial assistance in the amount of P25,000 to the 16 workers who were reportedly hostaged by their employer in Occidental Mindoro recently.

Provincial Administrator Zoe Herrera said that the financial aid was released by Gov. Tanco, Sr thru Ms. Lydia Stewart so that all stranded workers can return home.

Earlier, Pontevedra Mayor Steve Contreras received reports that one of the 16 workers was shot and hacked by employer Romy Gaston of Santa Cruz, Occidental Mindoro.

However, Santa Cruz police chief Gilbert San Juan denied the alleged hostage report over RMN-dyVR but he admitted that 15 workers sought refuge from fellow Capiceño after they run away from their employer.

The workers were identified as Jimmy Bacero of Brgy. Intongcan, Pontevedra; Chito Ballona, Juan and Romel Estorninos, Jose Villalobos, Juanito Bulaan, Micheal Bulan, Jonel Bustamante, Ricardo Inion, Jenmark Rubio, Elton Bacalinao, Jimmy Dilan, Willy Ballon, Jolly Ranco, and two other unidentified workers.

The police chief said that the employer hired the 16 workers to develop his fishpond but the workers complained that they were not given their salaries.

Bacero was shot and hacked by Gaston while walking outside their quarters on Friday evening, August 14. The victim sustained wound on his face and is presently confined in a hospital.

The following day, the cellular phones of the 15 workers were reportedly confiscated so that they could not communicate with others.

A long-standing feud between a Bangladeshi and his in-laws resulted to a bloody ending early morning yesterday in Brgy. East Baluarte, Molo, Iloilo City.

Around 8 a.m. yesterday Mohammed Zahir Hossain shot his estranged wife Ruby Ann Senato and her mother Yolanda Senato, a barangay kagawad of East Baluarte, while walking beside the road. Ruby Ann died minutes after she was brought to the hospital while her mother is still under treatment as of press time.

Hossain, on the other hand, was shot by responding policemen after he tried to fight back while trying to escape. He also died minutes after he was brought at Saviour International Hospital in Molo.

Earlier, witnesses saw Hossain alighting from a taxi along the corner of Baluarte and Boulevard road then immediately shot Ruby Ann and Yolanda who were walking beside the road from East Baluarte.

Saldy Alondares, driver of Light of Glory Taxi, voluntarily went to Molo police station to report that his taxi unit was hired by Hussein.

Alondares said Hossain hired the taxi cab he is driving for one hour, where he was told to go to Boulevard, Molo.

The driver said, in Boulevard, Molo Hossain came out of the taxi and told him to wait. Minutes later Hossain went back then told him that they would leave but upon reaching the corner of Boulevard and Baluarte road, Hossain immediately alighted from the taxi then shot the two women.

Police discovered from the crime scene five empty shells and two live bullets of .38 caliber revolver believed to used by Hussein in shooting the victims.

Hossain tried to escape towards Brgy. Timawa but police operatives were able to catch up with him.

Molo police chief Sr. Insp. Danilo Delos Santos said Hussein tried to shoot back at the pursuing policemen prompting PO1 Alvin Alcolea to shoot him.

Sr. Insp. Delos Santos, in an interview with Bombo Radyo, said he still saw Hossain and Ruby Ann the other week eating ice cream with their child in a restaurant in the city which made the police chief wonder why Hossain did it to his wife.

It was learned that there was a long-standing feud between Hossain and Ruby Ann’s parents who do not want the two to leave together as the Bangladeshi always hurt their daughter.

To recall, last March of this year Hussein lobbed a grenade at the house of Ruby Ann’s parents in East Baluarte, unfortunately it did not explode.

Authorities were able to recover the said grenade which they brought to the headquarters of Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team. However, while being readied for safekeeping said grenade exploded killing SPO3 Raphael Managuit of the Explosives and Ordnance Division (EOD) of the Iloilo City Police Office.

Appropriate charges were filed against Hossain but all of them were dismissed by the Iloilo City Prosecutor’s Office.

Meanwhile, Ruby Ann’s brother Reggie Senato blamed the Molo police for what happened to his mother and sister.

Reggie said they have long sought police help with regard to the threat posed by Hossain on their family but the Molo police merely ignored them.

It was learned that Hossain and Ruby Ann have three children who are under the custody of Ruby Ann’s parents.

This is news from country one would least expect. This news is from saudi arabia which has strictest law for rape as well as homosexuality.

Police arrested two men and a woman who were involved in the rape of a man who was then blackmailed into paying cash to the trio, Al-Riyadh newspaper reported. The man developed a relationship with the woman over the phone, which led to the pair going on a date to a restaurant. The man was, however, met by two huge men instead of the woman and taken to an apartment where he was filmed being raped by the men. The man reported the incident to the police.

Rape is worst crime and coupled by a straight person forced to enter homosexual relation is unimaginable. Rape cases are shockingly rising in conservative country like saudi arabia.

Homesexual rapes are also on rise with recently a 3 year old boy was murdered and raped in saudi arabia..

This news is unique , disgusting and shocking that a man rapes another man and then blackmails him.

Can you believe that using social networking sites at work can increase your workplace productivity? A new study just published by Australian scientists found that taking time to visit websites of personal interest, including news sites and YouTube, provided workers a mental break that ultimately increased their ability to concentrate and was correlated with a 9% increase in total productivity.

Reporters are shocked by the findings. We're in shock that this is where the state of academic study is concerning social technology use vs. workplace filtering technology when it comes to productivity. A 9% increase in productivity? Try using these social technologies for on topic work and you'll see productivity increases that make 9% look like nothing.

The study was performed by researchers at Australia's University of Melbourne and coined the phrase "workplace Internet leisure browsing," or WILB. The activity helps keep the mind fresh and helps put you in a better place when you come back to working on topic, the scientists said.

"People who do surf the Internet for fun at work - within a reasonable limit of less than 20% of their total time in the office - are more productive by about 9% than those who don't," said Dr Brent Coker, from the Melbourne Department of Management and Marketing. Got that? You can spend as much as 20% of your time at work dorking around on the internet and still end up 9% more productive than people who don't! Print this article and put it in your wallet for the next time you get in trouble for browsing on the job, eh?

In fact, this isn't an entirely worthless insight. We like to use StumbleUpon every once in a while just to run some cool water through the pathways of the brain associated with imagination.

Really, though, reading news feeds at work and using social networking sites (especially Twitter) can lead to so many multiples in productivity that any surprise over this 9% finding is hard to wrap our heads around.

On-demand access to geographically dispersed, topic-specific knowledge and feedback through both synchronous and asynchronous communication over multiple technology platforms is what social media use at work can be and that is a game changer. Could someone please study that?

What this study says to us is that the social web is so incredibly powerful that even people who don't know how to use it find themselves made 9% more productive because of it - on accident. Studying that seems like missing the point, though it is interesting.

History / Pressure cooker inventor
August 22, 2009, 12:35:04 AM
The man who gave us the pressure cooker, Denis Papin, was born on this date in 1647. The French physicist and mathematician was best known for his work with steam power. He worked closely with Christiaan Huygens, experimenting with the air pump. Aside from the pressure cooker (which he called the "steam digester"), Papin conceived the idea for the steam engine and built the first human-powered paddle boat. In 1710, he was appointed to the Royal Society, but many of his ideas and his personality conflicted with those of other members, especially Sir Isaac Newton, the Society's president. No one seemed to know where Papin spent his final days; the last record of his whereabouts is a letter he wrote, dated January 23, 1712. It is believed that he died destitute later that year and was buried in an unmarked pauper's grave.

(BEIJING) â€" China performs about 13 million abortions every year, mostly for single young women who experts say know little about contraception, state media said Thursday in a rare disclosure of sensitive family planning statistics.

The China Daily newspaper said the real number of abortions is believed to be even higher since the 13 million accounts for procedures in hospitals but many more are known to be carried out in unregistered rural clinics. Also, about 10 million abortion pills are sold every year in China, the paper said.

It quoted Wu Shangchun, a government official with the National Population and Family Planning Commission, as saying that nearly half of the women seeking abortions in China had used no form of contraception.

China imposed strict birth controls in the 1970s, limiting most couples to just one child. Sterilization and the use of intrauterine devices, or IUDs, for women are widely promoted â€" and subsidized â€" forms of contraception for married women. However, the policy tends to overlook the contraception needs of unmarried women even as attitudes toward casual sex have dramatically liberalized.

The report said around 62 percent of the women undergoing abortions were single and aged between 20 and 29 years old.

It called the widespread use of abortions "an unfortunate situation" but did not directly say whether abortions were on the rise. No year to year statistics were given.

Wu told the paper that reducing the number of abortions was a tough challenge facing the country.

Peking University professor, Li Ying, was quoted as saying that sex education needed to be improved at the university level and that Chinese parents also needed to teach their kids more about sex.

The government says its family planning controls since the 1970s â€" including contraception, sterilization and abortion procedures â€" have prevented an additional 400 million births in the world's most populous country of 1.3 billion.

About 1.2 million women have abortions each year in the United States, which has a population of just more than 300 million people.

HAVANA (Reuters) - Cuba, in the grip of a serious economic crisis, is running short of toilet paper and may not get sufficient supplies until the end of the year, officials with state-run companies said Friday.

Officials said they were lowering the prices of 24 basic goods to help Cubans get through the difficulties provoked in part by the global financial crisis and three destructive hurricanes that struck the island last year.

Cuba's financial reserves have been depleted by increased spending for imports and reduced export income, which has forced the communist-led government to take extraordinary measures to keep the economy afloat.

"The corporation has taken all the steps so that at the end of the year there will be an important importation of toilet paper," an official with state conglomerate Cimex said on state-run Radio Rebelde.

The shipment will enable the state-run company "to supply this demand that today is presenting problems," he said.

Cuba both imports toilet paper and produces its own, but does not currently have enough raw materials to make it, he said.

One of the measures taken to address the cash crunch is a 20 percent cut in imports, which in recent days has become evident in the reduction of goods in state-run stores.

Cuba imports about 60 percent of its food.

Despite the shortages, prices will be cut between 5 percent and 27 percent for some food, drugs and personal hygiene products, officials said.

A visit to a store in Havana's Vedado neighborhood on Friday found that prices had dropped for mayonnaise, barbecue sauce and canned squid.

One customer, who gave his name only as Pedro, complained that "it doesn't look like prices have been lowered for the fundamental products" such as cooking oil.

Ana Maria Ortega, deputy director for military-run retail conglomerate TRD Caribe, said there will be no shortage of basic goods.

"The conditions are in place to maintain the supply of essential products," she said on the same radio program.

Cubans receive a subsidized food ration from the government each month that they say meets their needs for about two weeks.

President Raul Castro told the National Assembly last week that the government had cut its spending budget for the second time this year and has been renegotiating its debt and payments with foreign providers.

Cuba has long blamed the 47-year-old U.S. trade embargo against the island for many of its economic problems. It also said that last year's hurricanes did $10 billion worth of damage that forced the government to spend heavily on imports of food and reconstruction products.

Castro, who replaced his ailing older brother Fidel Castro as president last year, also has complained that Cuba's productivity is too low.

He has taken various steps to boost output, including putting more state-owned land in private hands and pushing for salaries to be based on productivity.

A major scientific report by leading Japanese academics concludes that global warming is not man-made and that the overall warming trend from the mid-part of the 20th Century onwards has now stopped.

Unsurprisingly the report, which was released last month, has been completely ignored by the Western corporate media.

The report was undertaken by Japan Society of Energy and Resources (JSER), the academic society representing scientists from the energy and resource fields.

The JSER acts as a government advisory panel, much like the International Panel on Climate Change did for the UN.

The JSER’s findings provide a stark contrast to the IPCC’s, however, with only one out of five top researchers agreeing with the claim that recent warming has been accelerated by man-made carbon emissions.

The government commissioned report criticizes computer climate modeling and also says that the US ground temperature data set, used to back up the man-made warming claims, is too myopic.

In the last month, no major Western media outlet has covered the report, which prompted British based sci-tech website The Register to commission a translation of the document.

Section one highlights the fact that Global Warming has ceased, noting that since 2001, the increase in global temperatures has halted, despite a continuing increase in CO2 emissions.

The report then states that the recent warming the planet has experienced is primarily a recovery from the so called “Little Ice Age” that occurred from around 1400 through to 1800, and is part of a natural cycle.

The researchers also conclude that global warming and the halting of the temperature rise are related to solar activity, a notion previously dismissed by the IPCC.

“The hypothesis that the majority of global warming can be ascribed to the Greenhouse Effect is mistaken.” the report’s introduction states.

Kanya Kusano, Program Director and Group Leader for the Earth Simulator at the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science & Technology (JAMSTEC) reiterates this point:

“[The IPCC's] conclusion that from now on atmospheric temperatures are likely to show a continuous, monotonic increase, should be perceived as an unprovable hypothesis,”

Shunichi Akasofu, head of the International Arctic Research Center in Alaska, cites historical data to challenge the claim that very recent temperatures represent an anomaly:

“We should be cautious, IPCC’s theory that atmospheric temperature has risen since 2000 in correspondence with CO2 is nothing but a hypothesis. ”

“Before anyone noticed, this hypothesis has been substituted for truth… The opinion that great disaster will really happen must be broken.” Akasofu concludes.

The key passages of the translated report can be found here.

The conclusions within the report dovetail with those of hundreds of Western scientists, who have been derided and even compared with holocaust deniers for challenging the so called “consensus” on global warming.

The total lack of exposure that this major report has received is another example of how skewed coverage of climate change is toward one set of hypotheses.

This serves the agenda to deliberately whip up mass hysteria on behalf of governments who are all too eager to introduce draconian taxation and control measures that won’t do anything to combat any form of warming, whether you believe it to be natural or man-made.

A learner driver from Oxfordshire has had his driving test cancelled because the instructor said the inside of his car was too dirty. Jack Hyde from Berrick Salome near Dorchester will now have to wait a further six weeks to retake the test and forfeits the £62 fee.

Mr Hyde, 18 said, “’As soon as the examiner opened the passenger door he said: ‘I can’t take you out in this’.”

The 18 year old said that there were a few crumbs on the passenger seat and a dog biscuit in the footwell and that he had been cleaning the car the morning of the test.

Jack added: “He could have at least given us five minutes to clean it, but there was just no negotiation”.

It is the third time that My Hyde has had his test cancelled, the first was in March when heavy rain called it off and he was ill with the flu on the second occasion. Mr Hyde has lodged a complaint with the Driving Standard Agency and awaits a reply.

Two Italian friends have crossed an old Citroen 2CV with a Ferrari, to produce a bread van capable of travelling 180mph. The project has taken just over 5 years to complete and is estimated to have cost around £150,000.

The chassis of a Ferrari F355 Berlinetta was combined with an aging Citroen 2CV Fourgonnette bread-van, and now churns out a staggering 400bhp and has a 0 to 60mph time of less than 5 seconds. The Citroen 2CV has also been given a new paint job, Ferrari red.

The project was completed by Nicolo Lamberti and Milko Dalla Costa, who run the Italian Nimik rally team. Nicolo said that they found the Ferrari at a price they couldn’t turn down, stating: “We decided to purchase the Ferrari even though we didn’t know what we were going to do with it. But because of our crazy minds we were confident that an idea would soon come to us.”

Adding that: “Then we saw the 2CV and Milko, who is a Citroen collector, had the idea of combining its body shell with the Ferrari. The 2CV hardly cost anything because it was in such bad condition. It had no engine and all that was left was the body shell.”

Officials in Switzerland have ordered warning signs telling hikers to keep their clothes on in a bid to combat the increased nuisance of naked hiking in the country. Over the past year, the country’s mountainous footpaths and trails have been plagued by the craze of hiking nude, with German tourists thought to be the main culprits.

This practise has shocked more traditional hikers, and the small mountain town of Appenzell Inner Rhodes has taken it upon themselves to impose a 200 Swiss franc (around £120) fine for anyone who is caught hiking nude.

Now Swiss officials have had enough and will be distributing the ‘no naked hiking’ signs throughout the country. Dan Walter, who originally designed the sign as a joke, has been astonished by the amount of orders that have come flooding in.

He said:  “It was a bit of a joke sending the sign in to the government. I just wanted to see what their reply would be for a laugh. I never expected an order for more”.

A German brothel has come up with a novel idea to help the environment and its customer during the economic crisis. They are offering a discount to customers who use public transport or bicycles to get to the premises.

The Maison d’envie in Berlin will be offering a â,¬5 discount (about £4.28) to any customers who can prove they travelled there by bicycle or public transport. Owner of the brothel Thomas Goetz talked about the new initiative saying that: “The recession has hit our industry hard; obviously we hope that the discount will attract more people”.

He also added: “It’s good for business, it’s good for the environment â€" and it’s good for the girls”.

Mr Goetz said that the new plan seems to be working saying that, “We have around 3-5 new customers coming in daily to take advantage of the discount”.

Prostitution is legal in Germany and it now has around 400,000 prostitutes working in the country. Since 2002, prostitutes have been allowed to enter formal labour contracts with their clients.

The alarm was raised when a motorist went to move his car and heard the man shouting for help, the motorist said, “I heard a voice saying help and at first I didn’t see him”.

Adding that, “Then I tried to pull him out but he was wedged tight. He didn’t see that jokers had removed the drain cover as he staggered home.”

The fire crew spent an hour freeing the man and had to cut a bit of the drain away. A member of the fire crew added, “After he was freed he walked home on his own â€" I think he was very embarrassed by it all and promised he would never drink again. He also said he planned to lose weight.”

The man is said to be cutting down on his beer intake and going on a diet after pictures of the incident were shown all over the German media.

South Korean customs has announced that the first cloned sniffer dogs have began active duty checking for drugs at its airports and border crossings. Six of the cloned dogs began duty this week after completing the 16 month training program.

The dogs are all called Toppy, a combination of ‘tomorrow’ and ‘puppy’ and were cloned from a Canadian sniffer dog in 2007. The Korean Customs service says that the clones cut the costs associated with training the sniffer dogs because only 30% of naturally born dogs make the grade, compared to nearly 90% of cloned dogs.

There were originally seven puppies cloned, but one dropped out due to injury. A customs spokesman said: “They are the world’s first cloned sniffer dogs deployed at work”.

Adding that, “They showed better performance in detecting illegal drugs during the training than other naturally born sniffer dogs that we have”.

All six of the cloned dogs have started work at Seoul’s Incheon International Airport.

In a pilot scheme, a Chinese bus company is fitting its busses with bricks for passengers to use in case of emergencies to break the windows. The bricks, which are painted yellow and have ‘emergency use’ written on them, will be stored under the back seats and driver’s seat of the bus.

A spokesperson for the Harbin Public Transport Company said, “It’s easy for passengers to spot them, and use them to break the window if something happened”.

The company used to provide passengers with safety hammers to use in an emergency, but they kept getting stolen. The spokesperson added: “We don’t think anybody will be interested in stealing bricks”.

The yellow emergency bricks have been installed on several busses so far and the company has stated that all of its 700 busses will be equipped with the bricks if they have positive customer feedback.

You don’t hear stories like this every day, but Thomas Cook have released a statement saying that one of its passengers fixed a mechanical fault with one of its planes.

Holiday makers onboard the Thomas Cook flight TXC9641 from Menorca were told that they faced a delay of up to eight hours because of a mechanical fault with the plane and they had to wait for the engineer to be flown in from the UK.

On hearing this, one of the passengers announced to staff that he was a qualified aircraft engineer working for Thomsonfly and offered to try and fix the fault. The mechanical fault was fixed and the Boeing 757 landed safely in Glasgow only half an hour late.

In a statement from Thomas Cook, a spokeswoman said that the company had followed strict procedures to ensure that the man was qualified to work on the plane saying that: “We checked his licence and verified he was who he said he was, and he was able to fix the problem to avoid the delay”.

Adding that, “We are very grateful that he was on the flight that day”.

I wonder if he got paid overtime for that.

The eldest daughter of Barrack Obama, Malia, has been photographed on a visit to the Colosseum in Rome wearing a t-shirt with the CND logo on it. She was visiting the tourist attraction with her mother Michelle, while her Dad prepared for the G8 summit talks in Italy.

The logo on her t-shirt is synonymous with the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and this comes days after Barrack was in Russia with Vladimir Putin discussing just that, in a hope to have more world stability. During the meetings in Russian it was agreed that the 2 countries, who hold 95% of the world’s nuclear weapons, would cut the number of warheads to 1500 from the existing 2,200.

The Obama family has a history of campaigning and it seems that if Malia carries on with her selection of t-shirt printing then she may follow in her father’s footsteps. No doubt the next campaign that the young girl will follow is on climate change as this is what needs to be important to the future generations. Best get the t-shirts organised since as the daughter of the most powerful and influential man in the world you have a fair amount of power too.

A Michigan man could face up to three months in jail after a friendly game of Monopoly turned violent. Kenneth Repke, 54, faces charges of assault and battery after allegedly slapping a woman and damaging her glasses after she declined to sell Broadwalk and Park Place (US version of Mayfair and Park Lane) to him.

The victim called the police saying: “I was at my neighbour’s house. We were playing Monopoly and he hit me. He slapped me and knocked my glasses off.”

Neighbours have been shocked by the incident, saying that Mr Repke and the woman regularly met for board game sessions. One neighbour said: “I thought that was violent for a game that’s supposed to be friendly. I guess he takes his Monopoly pretty seriously.”

Kenneth Repke will appear in court this week and if found guilty, could be imprisoned for up to three months.

A Hampshire-based team of engineers are hoping to break the steam car speed record over the next four days. The team hope to break the 127mph (204km/h) record, which was set in 1906 and is the longest standing land speed record.

The team have already unofficially beat the record during testing last week and are confident that the car, called Inspiration, can achieve speeds of up to 170mph (274kmh). To enter the FIA record books, the car must do 2, two-mile runs in opposite directions, which are then averaged out giving the official speed.

The car, which weighs over 3 tonnes and is 25 foot long has been dubbed the ‘fastest kettle in the world’ and has taken over 10 years to complete.

Project manager Matt Candy admits that it has not all been clear sailing, he said, “We’ve had overheating electrical components, so we’ve started using an awful lot of dry ice every day to cool those,”

Adding that: “We’ve also had a lot of gas pressure problems, due to the temperature causing the liquid propane to vaporise further up the car than it normally does”.

An American called Fred Marriot holds the steam car speed record, which he set in 1906 with his car dubbed ‘the rocket’; the record took place on Ormond Beach, now known as Daytona Beach in Florida.

A London travel agent that was offering £10 flights to Australia got a surprise, when would-be travellers set up camp outside three days before the offer started. Bargain hunters started camping outside STA Travel in Victoria on Sunday, with friends Rosie Emeny and Ashleigh McPherson first in line.

Talking about their camping experience, one of the girls said: “We have been quite lucky with the weather and we are absolutely loving being first in the queue”.

Adding that, “The tickets will be saving us about £600 â€" this was too good an opportunity to give up. I wanted to go to Australia anyway and we heard about this at around the same time. Anyone who thinks we are mad for camping out is just jealous!”

The happy campers passed the time playing cards and reading, with another camper saying: “Camping out might seem a bit extreme but it has been a really good laugh. It has been a real festival atmosphere â€" everyone has been having a few drinks and enjoying themselves”.

A similar scheme was introduced in the 1950’s, where thousands of Brits took advantage of a £10 assisted passage to Australia by boat, earning them the nickname of £10 Poms.

The company has vowed to honour the 1 cent a night rate, with a spokeswoman stating: “Although a pricing error, IHG is committed to honouring the 1-cent rate for guests who have a valid confirmation”.

The Crowne Plaza Hotel is situated around 20km from Venice in the Quarto D’Altino province of Italy. The main income for Venice and its surrounding area is tourism, attracting an estimated 15 million travellers a year.

The police stated that the pair had been holding up the traffic because cars could not overtake them and they should of been riding faster.

Disgruntled by the fine, Kiserlovski and Rafaj deny the charges, instead telling the court that their average speed was over 20mph.

Sources on what happened to Jesus' disciples

Hippolytus of Rome:
Birth unknown, died around 236 AD

Eusebius:
Was the Bishop of Caesarea in Palestine, known as the "Father of Church History" because he wrote about the church history. Lived around 260-341 AD

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
....And now... what ever happened to the disciples of Jesus....
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Judas Iscariot
We all know what happened to him...

Andrew
According to Hippolytus:
Andrew preached to the Scythians [modern day Georgia] and Thracians [modern day Bulgaria], and was crucified, suspended on an olive tree, at Patrae, a town of Achaia [Greece]; and there too he was buried.

Bartholomew
According to Hippolytus, Bartholomew preached in India:
Bartholomew, again, preached to the Indians, to whom he also gave the Gospel according to Matthew, and was crucified with his head downward, and was buried in Allanum, a town of the great Armenia [modern day southern Georgia].

Eusebius, in his Church History, confirms the ministry of Bartholomew in India, and adds an eye witness account:
About that time, Pantaenus, a man highly distinguished for his learning, had charge of the school of the faithful in Alexandria... Pantaenus...is said to have gone to India. It is reported that among persons there who knew of Christ, he found the Gospel according to Matthew, which had anticipated his own arrival. For Bartholomew, one of the apostles, had preached to them, and left with them the writing of Matthew in the Hebrew language, which they had preserved till that time. ---- (Book 5, Chapter 10)

James, Son of Alphaeus
Hippolytus identifies that James was stoned to death in Jerusalem:
And James the son of Alphaeus, when preaching in Jerusalem, was stoned to death by the Jews, and was buried there beside the temple.

James, Son of Zebedee
James was the brother of John, the disciple "that Jesus loved".

According to the Book of Acts in the New Testament, James was killed by Herod:
Act 12:1 And at that time Herod the king threw on his hands to oppress some of those of the church.
Act 12:2 And he killed James the brother of John with the sword.

This is confirmed by Hippolytus:
James, his brother, when preaching in Judea, was cut off with the sword by Herod the tetrarch, and was buried there.

Eusebius descibed more precisely what was cut off of James:
First Stephen was stoned to death by them, and after him James, the son of Zebedee and the brother of John, was beheaded... (Book 3, Chapter 5)
Yep... James' head was cut...

John, brother of James and son of Zebedee
John was one of the few disciples that did not die a cruel death, but of "old age".

Eusebius discusses the reason that John wrote his Gospel:
"Matthew and John have left us written memorials, and they, tradition says, were led to write only under the pressure of necessity...And when Mark and Luke had already published their Gospels, they say that John, who had employed all his time in proclaiming the Gospel orally, finally proceeded to write for the following reason. The three Gospels already mentioned having come into the hands of all and into his own too, they say that he accepted them and bore witness to their truthfulness; but that there was lacking in them an account of the deeds done by Christ at the beginning of his ministry." (Book 3, Chapter 24)

According to Hippolytus, John was banished by Domitian to the Isle of Patmos, and later died in Ephesus:
John, again, in Asia, was banished by Domitian the king to the isle of Patmos, in which also he wrote his Gospel and saw the apocalyptic vision; and in Trajan's time he fell asleep at Ephesus, where his remains were sought for, but could not be found.

Matthew/Levi
Eusebius referenced to Bishop Papias of Hierapolis, as early as c. 110 A.D., bearing witness to Matthew's authorship of his gospel:
....Matthew put together the oracles [of the Lord] in the Hebrew language, and each one interpreted them as best he could." (Eusebius, Book 3, Chapter 39)

According to Hippolytus:
Matthew wrote the Gospel in the Hebrew tongue, and published it at Jerusalem, and fell asleep at Hierees, a town of Parthia.\224 [Parthia is near modern day Tehran]

Simon/Peter
Eusebius, quoting Papias of Hierapolis (c. 110 A.D.), records a tradition that the Gospel of Mark preserved the Gospel as preached by Peter:

"Mark having become the interpreter of Peter, wrote down accurately whatsoever he remembered.... he accompanied Peter..." ---- (Book 3, Chapter 39)

Irenaeus (c. 180 A.D.) records a similar tradition, and mentions that Peter and Paul founded the Church in Rome:
"Matthew also issued a written Gospel among the Hebrews in their own dialect, while Peter and Paul were preaching at Rome, and laying the foundations of the Church. After their departure, Mark, the disciple and interpreter of Peter, did also hand down to us in writing what had been preached by Peter..." ---- (Irenaeus, "Against Heresies", Book 3, Chapter 1)

Eusebius records that Peter was put to death under Nero in Rome:
It is, therefore, recorded that Paul was beheaded in Rome itself, and that Peter likewise was crucified under Nero. This account of Peter and Paul is substantiated by the fact that their names are preserved in the cemeteries of that place even to the present day. ---- (Book 2, Chapter 25)
(Paul was a Roman citizen can cannot be crucified but got an "easier" death sentence)

Hippolytus confirmed the fact that Peter was crucified by Nero in Rome:
Peter preached the Gospel in Pontus, and Galatia, and Cappadocia, and Betania, and Italy, and Asia, and was afterwards crucified by Nero in Rome with his head downward, as he had himself desired to suffer in that manner.

Philip
According to Hippolytus, Philip preached and was executed in what today is eastern Turkey:
Philip preached in Phrygia, and was crucified in Hierapolis with his head downward in the time of Domitian, and was buried there.

Simon the Zealot
According to Hippolytus, Simon the Zealot was the second Bishop of Jerusalem:

Simon the Zealot, the son of Clopas, who is also called Jude, became bishop of Jerusalem after James the Just, and fell asleep and was buried there at the age of 120 years.

Thaddaeus/Judas son of James
According to Mat 10:3 (KJV): Philip, and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the publican; James the son of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus.... Thaddaeus is also known as Lebbaeus.

Hippolytus records:
Jude, who is also called Lebbaeus, preached to the people of Edessa, and to all Mesopotamia, and fell asleep at Berytus, and was buried there.

Thomas
Hippolytus records that Thomas was an active missionary, and that he met his fate in India:
And Thomas preached to the Parthians, Medes, Persians, Hyrcanians, Bactrians, and Margians, and was thrust through in the four members of his body with a pine spear at Calamene, the city of India, and was buried there.

After thought

Many of Jesus disciples died cruel deaths for preaching the gospel

From other sources (e.g., Paul's letters, Pliny's letters to Trajan ( click here ), etc), all these Christians need to do to escape a cruel execution was simply: to denounce their faith in Jesus...

Meanwhile, in the case of those who were denounced to me as Christians, I have observed the following procedure: I interrogated these as to whether they were Christians; those who confessed I interrogated a second and a third time, threatening them with punishment; those who persisted I ordered executed. For I had no doubt that, whatever the nature of their creed, stubbornness and inflexible obstinacy surely deserve to be punished. There were others possessed of the same folly; but because they were Roman citizens, I signed an order for them to be transferred to Rome. (A letter from Pliny to Trajan)

Yet, they decided not to denounce Jesus... Why ???...

People do not die for a lie - these disciples must have seen something that made them choose their cruel death over denouncing their faith.

Remember that these disciples are Jews - and the ultimate promise of God to the Jews was the coming of a Messiah....

Maybe, just maybe, they were convinced of having seen and touched the Messiah ? The ressurection of the death may have given them the necessary push that made them overcome their doubt ?

Human nature is such that no sane man would give up his own life to a belief that he knows is untrue.

If anyone knew for sure whether Jesus did or did not resurrect from His death, it would be His disciples.
In fact, Christianity was NOT spread by Jesus, but by these disciples... They willingly went out to tell about Jesus' resurrection while putting their life on the line.

The historical FACT that many of these disciples decided to give up their own life to tell the world about that "Jesus has resurrected" is a very STRONG evidence that what they died for is the truth !

The reason that many of these disciples were executed is this:

They refuse to renounce their Lord Jesus, the Christ... That is the truth they are willing to die for...

Two more testimonies

There are 2 people who offer an even stronger testimony to Jesus' resurrection:

Jesus' (half) brother James Paul

Both of these persons were anti-Jesus before their conversion; and yet later in their lives, both of them were willing to give their life to Jesus whom they willingly called "Lord"...

The Bible tells us that James did not believe in Him:

John 7:5 For His brothers did not believe in Him.
It should not be surprising that Jesus' own brothers would not believe - imagine growing up with Jesus and one day, your brother claims to be the Son of God... Tough sell...

The Jewish Historian Josephus told us that James was martyred in Jerusalem:

In Antiquities, Book 20, Chapter 9:
Festus was now dead, and Albinus was but upon the road; so he assembled the sanhedrim of judges, and brought before them the brother of Jesus, who was called Christ, whose name was James, and some others, [or, some of his companions]; and when he had formed an accusation against them as breakers of the law, he delivered them to be stoned...

(Note that Josephus was not a Christian and his work was mainly to write about Jewish history - his mentioning of Jesus and James affirms the historicity of Jesus and James as actual persons in history)

This may be the reason why James was willing to die for Jesus:

1Co 15:1 And, brothers, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you have received, and in which you stand;
1Co 15:2 by which you also are being kept safe, if you hold fast the word which I preached to you, unless you believed in vain.
1Co 15:3 For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received, that Christ died for our sins, according to the Scriptures,
1Co 15:4 and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures;
1Co 15:5 and that He was seen by Cephas, then by the Twelve.
1Co 15:6 Afterward He was seen by over five hundred brothers at once, of whom the greater part remain until this present day, but also some fell asleep.
1Co 15:7 Afterward He was seen by James....
Yep, if you see someone back alive after seeing Him die and be buried, the event can really change your mind about Him...

Paul himself confessed that he was persecuting Christians before his conversion.
According to his own words, Jesus appeared to Him on the way to Damascus (to round up Christians - see Acts, Chapter 9) and his life is no longer the same.

His belief in Jesus was backed by his martyrdom in Rome (he was decapitated) - that's quite a turn around: from someone who could not care less about Christians to someone who would give up his own life for the belief....

The only explanation is that Paul did see Jesus on that road to Damascus...
