Samsung Galaxy Note II Review

Lisa Gade reviews the Samsung Galaxy Note II Android smartphone, or "phablet". In this video we take a look at the Sprint version, though each major US carrier will offer this phone with nearly identical software and hardware. The Note II has a 5.5", 1280 x 720 Super AMOLED HD display, a powerful 1.6GHz Samsung Exynos quad core CPU and Samsung's S Pen that works with the active Wacom digitizer on the phone. It has an 8MP rear camera that's essentially the same as the Samsaun Galaxy S III's camera, dual band WIFi, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, NFC, 2 gigs of RAM, 16 gigs of internal storage and a microSD card slot.

Samsung Galaxy S3 Review (S III) - Phones 4u

bit.ly Samsung Galaxy S III Review by Phones 4u. There's been loads of hype about the Galaxy S 3 and we've been itching to get up close and personal with it. Well, the wait is finally over and we've managed to put together a full review of the latest smarphone to hit the Korean manufacturer's Galactic range. Running Android Ice Cream Sandwich and taking its cue from nature in terms of aesthetics, the device features a rounded, pebble-inspired chassis. This proves a happy home for a whopping 4.8" SuperAMOLED HD screen that lives up to expectation with crystal clear visuals. A 1.4GHz quad-core processor powers things along, meaning that watching HD video (shot at 1080p via the 8 megapixel camera) is an experience in itself. And that's not all, thanks to a plethora of intuitive multimedia features such as S-Voice, Sammy's version of Apple's awesome Siri voice recognition software, wireless file sharing from S-Beam, intuitive screen management via Smart Stay and Allshare Play which allows the streaming of digital content to other DLNA enabled devices. There's a whole host of useful native apps and software too, plus connectivity options including NFC, Wi-Fi and 4G (if you live somewhere that supports the superfast network), all of which make the S III definitely look like the smartphone big dog. See how we got on in the company of the Samsung Galaxy S III by heading over to the P4u News & Community site and reading our expertly crafted words: community.phones4u.co.uk Stick <b>...</b>

iPhone 5 Vs. Galaxy S III - FIGHT!

iPhone 5 Vs. Samsung Galaxy S3 - FIGHT! iPhone 5 review: tchno.be Galaxy S III review: tchno.be When new tech hits the market, we often present you with spec-for-spec comparison battles to give you an idea how each product stacks up to their closest rival. But depending on how you approach, say, the smartphone market, listing off processor, screen and megapixel size doesn't typically indicate overall user experience. Ultimately, a simple side-by-side tablet can make deciding which handset to get a very difficult decision. So we've produced a video of — what else? — a head-to-head battle between Apple's iPhone 5 and Samsung's Galaxy S III. With Apple's thinner, lighter and faster handset already smashing company records, and Samsung's Next Big Thing dominating the Android market, it's only fitting we pit these two against each other. To give you a quick overview, we'll base our opinion in the video on six key categories: Design and Build Quality, Storage and Expandability, Internals and Performance, OS / Software, Display, and Battery Life. tchno.be For more tech goodness, check us out at: www.technobuffalo.com Follow Us on Twitter: www.twitter.com Like Us on Facebook: www.facebook.com Check Us Out on Google+: tchno.be Inside My Mind: www.youtube.com

HTC Droid DNA vs Samsung Galaxy S III

We've poked and prodded it in unboxings and hands-ons, compared it to the LG Optimus G and Galaxy Note II, and we've given it the full review treatment. Since the Droid DNA's unveiling in New York City last week, we've been all over every inch of the new 1080p Android superphone from HTC and Verizon. From benchmarks to speed tests to camera samples taken out on the cold streets of Boston, it's all been done. So you can forgive Michael Fisher for being so tired he looks like a corpse in this latest video. So tired he now apparently refers to himself in the third person. But today, on the eve of the Droid DNA's transfer to Pocketnow's Pennsylvania offices to spend some time under the pixel-perfect eyeball of Brandon Miniman, there's one more comparison to be done. A showdown between the new 5-inch HTC wonder and the established veteran of the Android space, between soft-touch paint and hyperglaze coating, between quad-core and dual-core. Today, the HTC Droid DNA faces our Verizon Wireless-branded Samsung Galaxy S III for 7+ minutes of hot head-to-head action. We'd tell you more, but this is no time for spoilers. Hit "play" up above and get your pencils, styli, or S Pens ready to jot down some benchmark results. It's the final countdown. Hit it. HTC Droid DNA vs Samsung Galaxy Note II

What do you get when you cross the biggest, baddest Samsung hardware with the latest and greatest HTC superphone, the one everyone insists on mislabeling a phablet? You get this Galaxy Note II-vs-Droid DNA video, of course, except with the names inverted. Because in this biz, the new-hotness gets first-word respect. Dig? In the video above, we take the Note II and the DNA on a short spin around the block, comparing their benchmark scores, in-hand feel, app launch times, browser performance, and -of course- their massive displays. We don't yet know the DNA well enough to put its other features to the test -wait for our full review on that magic- but if you've ever wondered what a 720p Super AMOLED looks like when stacked up against a 1080p SLCD3, or asked yourself whether polished hyperglaze or matte soft-touch feels better in a palm, this video will be right up your alley. Corporate News : SAMSUNG in Chinese On-line Cash Service Project

This is to be the first stage of the "Green Card Project," a plan formulated in 1994 to connect over 55,000 Post Office branches in some 3,000 cities (including all the major metropolitan areas) throughout China's 30 provinces.

Samsung Electronics will provide desktop PCs (model #: SSM8000/5100), routers, hubs and other network hardware to form a distributed client/server system. Samsung will also set up a Development & Service Center.

The market in Chongqing and Kunming is large, and is expected to be the focal point of the Second Phase of the project, scheduled to start in 1998. Chongqing is the principal city in Sichuan, a province with 120 million people. Kunming, the capital of Yunnan, is filled with tourist attractions, and strong interest is being shown there by banks to develop an on-line cash disbursement system for tourists.

By 1997, China's Postal Ministry will have an on-line linkup between the Beijing Finance Settlement Center and the cities of Chongqing and Kunming. Plans call for a nationwide Post Office on-line network connecting 500 cities by 1998.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a US$ 21 billion flagship company of Korean-based Samsung Group, is a world leader in the electronics sector, with operations in more than 60 countries. The company develops, manufactures, and markets audio and video products, household electronics goods, computers & peripheral products, display products, telecommunication & information systems, software tools & semiconductors.

Corporate News : SAMSUNG Signs Indian Telecom J/V Agreement

(SEOUL) - Samsung Electronics Co. (SEC) is making inroads into the Indian telecommunications market, with a population of 900 million people. SEC vice-president Y.R. Song (chief of the Information Systems Division) and Larsen & Tonbro Ltd. (L&T) president M.P. Wagh signed a joint venture agreement in Seoul on April 17. The two companies each put up US$10 million in initial paid-in capital to start a company that will produce and market telecommunications hardware.

Products handled by the joint-venture include private exchange systems (from 1996, 100,000 lines of capacity per year), paging systems (from 1996, 50 systems per year), public phone exchange systems (from 1997, 500,000 lines of capacity per year), and transmission hardware (from 1998, 1,000 systems per year). Initial production will focus on items needed to build a modern telecommunications infrastructure in India. Over the next five years, a total of US$44 million will be invested in this joint venture.

The production operation will be in the city of Mysore, where L&T is located. Existing facilities and personnel at L&T can be utilized, and production costs will only be 10% of what they would be elsewhere in India, providing a huge competitive advantage. The sales headquarters will be in Munbai (formerly known as Bombay), the nation? economic hub, to facilitate the establishment of a nationwide distribution system.

Through this joint venture, Samsung Electronics will supply public phone exchange (switching) capacity of 4.3 million lines, private exchange capacity of 650,000 lines, paging systems for 300,000 subscribers and 5,000 transmission systems over the next decade. This output will represenet US$800 million in gross income and plans call for the new company to be among the top three in the Indian telecommunications market by 2001. It will also provide an opportunity to get Samsung further involved in the Southeast Asian and Middle Eastern markets.

According to the Indian government? Telecommunications Modernization Plan, US$16 billion will be spent by 2000 to get telephone access to 6% of the nation? families, which means supplying switching system capacity for 20 million subscribers. Demand in the private sector, meanwhile, will expand to 4 million private exchange subscribers and 3 million pager subscribers.

The Samsung-L&T joint venture is part of a US$629 million investment in India by 1999 by electronics subgroup of Samsung. At that time, the company will have a total of seven local subsidiaries in India, including a TV plant, home appliance plant (refrigerators, washing machines, microwave ovens), a terminal plant (pagers, key phone sets, cellular phones, fax machines), a monitor and computer plant, a color Braun tube plant and an electric parts plant.

Samsung intends to be among the world? top 5 producers of telecommunications hardware by the year 2000. To achieve this goal new production facilities are being built in China, Russia, India and Brazil, connected to R&D centers in Korea, the UK and the US to develop products designed especially for local markets.

The joint venture approach was used for entry into the Indian telecommunications market because the Indian government imposes very high customs duties on foreign products and encourages local investment. Trying to go into India alone is further complicated by the complex mix of races, languages, religions, and cultures in the vast country. A joint venture is also necessary for building a system of quality control, sales and after-sales service.

L&T, India third largest financial concern, has annual sales ofr US$1.2 billion. It is involved in high growth industries such as construction, engineering, telecommunications, and peripheral equipment. The company is well known locally and has outstanding capabilities in manufacturing, marketing and financing. L&T offers everything needed for early entry into the Indian telecommunications market.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a US$ 21 billion flagship company of Korean-based Samsung Group, is a world leader in the electronics sector, with operations in more than 60 countries. The company develops, manufactures, and markets audio and video products, household electronics goods, computers & peripheral products, display products, telecommunications & information systems, software tools & semiconductors. The company currently employs over 70,000 people worldwide.

Corporate News : SAMSUNG to Supply 1.3 Million CDMA PCS Terminals to Sprint Spectrum L.P.

Sprint Spectrum L.P., the largest PCS provider in the US, is a joint venture of Sprint Corp., Tele-Communications Inc. (TCI), Cox Communications, and Comcast Corporation (all US based companies). Last year, in the FCC's first auction of next-generation wireless licenses, the partners invested US$2.11 billion to acquire PCS licenses in Major Trading Areas (MTAs) and thereby won rights to wireless licenses in 29 trading areas, representing 70 percent of the US population (182.4 million people).

The 1.3 million CDMA PCS terminals Samsung will supply to Sprint Spectrum are super-small (145 mm x 54 mm), super-light (170 grams) and super-slim (22 mm), and  offer the same features as current analog and digital cellular phones. The terminals will operate at a broad band frequency of 1.9 GHz. Samsung Information Systems America (SISA), a multimedia research facility run by Samsung Electronics in the US, is currently developing software for the new CDMA PCS terminals to meet US market needs.

Samsung believes that this deal will serve as a springboard for the company's further marketing efforts of CDMA products, not only in the US, but around the world. Company officials did not disclose the monetary value of the deal.

CDMA BACKGROUND
Korean companies were the world's first to commercialize the CDMA system, which  increases current analog cellular network capacity by more than 10 times. CDMA is based on modulating the signal from each user by using unique digital code that spreads the spectrum of each user's signal across a wide bandwidth. Other benefits of CDMA include enhanced voice quality, powerful cell hand-off, data communication and position location, improved multipath resistance, fewer cell cites, more privacy, longer talk time, and a flexible limit to the number of calls per cell. Therefore, CDMA is the most advantageous technology to use with portable phones.

PCS FUTURE
Sprint Spectrum L.P., founded ein 1994, currently employs 1,600 people and has 33 offices throughout the US. The company is focused on its preparation for offering CDMA personal communications services.

Samsung Electronics Company Ltd., a US$21 billion flagship company of US$80 billion, Korean-based Samsung Group, is a world leader in the electronics sector, with operations in more than 60 countries. The company develops, manufactures, and markets audio and video products, household electronics goods, computers & peripheral products, display products, telecommunications & information systems, software tools & semiconductors.

Corporate News : SAMSUNG Mass Producing 12.1 inch TFT-LCDs

Seoul, Korea, April 26, 1996 - Samsung Electronics Co. (SEC) announced today that it had begun shipping out 12.1 inch thin film transistor liquid crystal displays (TFT-LCDs) earlier this week. By being the first to go into mass production, Samsung has gotten a head start on industry rivals in the multimedia PC market. Moreover, the Samsung product is second to none in terms of performance and quality.

The 12.1 inch version is the largest TFT-LCD that can be installed in a notebook PC. Samsung`s unique high aperture ratio design results in a very clear image on the screen. A low-power-consuming driver circuit allows the product to operate at 2.5 watts or less. The number of pixels is super-VGA class, enabling the device to reproduce 260,000 color shades. Samsung`s new TFT-LCD is 275 mm wide and 200 mm high and less than 8 mm thick. So, the notebook PCs it is used in can be made smaller and lighter than models currently available.

The world notebook PC market is growing by at least 20% a year. Last year, the 10.4` TFT-LCD was the main display used in notebook PCs, but from this year 11.3` and 12.1 inch versions are going into wide use. The 12.1 inch model is the largest size possible for this application and is expected to become the industry standard for multimedia notebook PCs.

Because of the high quality on-screen image and performance of Samsung`s TFT-LCD, coupled with the trend towards notebook PCs with larger screens, company officials expect to get well established in the market this year. Therefore they decided to invest US$308 million (W240 billion) to set up a second mass production line in Kiheung, Korea, during the first half of this year.

The production line #2, which is set to start up in the second half of this year, can process siex 12.1 inch panels on a 650 mm x 550 mm (third-generation) motherglass substrate, rather than the normal number of four panels per substrate produced at other plants. By the end of the year, Samsung`s monthly production capacity will reach 180,000 TFT-LCD panels (various sizes). With this increased capability and continuous further investments on the R&D and production, Samsung Electronics expects to emerge as the world`s third largest LCD maker by the year 2000.

Corporate News : SAMSUNG Delivers 256M DRAM Module

(SEOUL, Korea) - Samsung Electronics Co. (SEC) today announced that it has shipped out samples of a 256-megabyte module, composed of nine (32Mb x 8) 256-megabit DRAM chips. The samples, which are organized as 32M x 72, have been sent to US makers of large-capacity engineering workstation systems. Other DRAM suppliers have delivered samples of single 256M DRAMs, but this is the first time samples have been completed for modules of the high-capacity chips.

Most PCs today have 16 megabytes of on-board memory. The new 256-megabyte module has sixteen times that capacity, making it well suited for such applications as workstations, HDTV and future multimedia systems. Modules made with up to 36 chips will provide a total capacity of 512 megabytes (18 chips) or even 1-gigabyte (36 chips).

The new modules, which physically fit in the space allowed for current desktop systems, make possible large-capacity memory systems with low power consumption. Thus, large systems will have significantly increased memory capacity that requires less space because of the modular packaging. This will likely translate to an overall smaller system size.

The new device uses a 0.25 micron CMOS process technology to make circuits which operates at 3.3 volts and achieve access times of 40 nanoseconds or less.

Other semiconductor makers are also developing this module, and the market for this new device is expected to begin emerging in 1998. By the year 2000, annual demand will be in the tens of millions of units; the following year, analysts predict the annual market will be for hundreds of millions, worth billions of dollars. In order to maintain itts lead in the field of next-generation DRAMs, Samsung Electronics has already started the development of full-scale production systems for the highly-integrated 256M DRAM modules.

At the end of 1994, Samsung Electronics was also the world`s first to ship samples of fully working 256M DRAM components. Now the company is in a position to supply large-capacity modules, putting Samsung in the lead for four generations of DRAMs, from 4M to 256M.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. is the world`s leading producer of semiconductor memory products and a US$ 21 billion affiliate of Samsung Group, a US$ 80 billion Korea-based conglomerate. Among the industry`s fastest growing high-quality, multinational IC manufacturers, Samsung manufactures more than 2,500 semiconductor product types across a range of categories. Samsung expects sales in China to reach US$ 2.5 billion by 2000, making  the company one of the nation*s top 3 appliance makers.

Samsung Electronics Co. has been investing heavily since last year to break into the Chinese home appliances market.  Now, a local appliance plant has been completed and is expected to have a major impact on Samsung*s market position in China.  Over 500 workers as well as company and local government officials were on hand for the ceremony,  held on September 6 at Suzhou, to dedicate Suzhou Samsung Electronics Co. (SSEC).

This means that Samsung now has production facilities covering parts and finished goods at four different locations in China, including audio system, TV and VCR plants at Tianjin and Huizhou;  a semiconductor plant at Suzhou and a telephone switching system plant at Weihai.  Samsung is also building an integrated marketing system to cover all of China.

SSEC was established as a joint venture in February 1995 so that Samsung Electronics could become heavily involved in China*s appliance market.  The joint venture partners are Samsung Electronics (80%) and Suzhou Xiangxuehai Electric Corp. (20%).  The production complex is on a site of 33,000 square meters.

In its first year of operation, SSEC will produce 150,000 refrigerators and 100,000 microwave ovens.  This output will represent US$ 40 million in sales. In 1997 production will be expanded to include 300,000 refrigerators, 250,000 microwave ovens, 200,000 air conditioners and 50,000 washing machines a year.  With that expansion, annual sales are expected to reach US$ 150 million.

By the year 2000, the complex will be capable of turning otut 2 million refrigerators, 1.6 million microwave ovens, 1.7 million washing machines and 500,000 air conditioners annually.  Sales will soar to US$ 2.5 billion a year, making SSEC China*s third-largest appliance maker.

Samsung Electronics needs to build up a system that ensures a stable supply of parts and components and keeps the finished goods competitive in the market. Therefore, subcontracted suppliers and separate plants for compressors, magnetrons and other key components will be set up in stages.  Local product planning and development capabilities will also be cultivated so that the entire operation, from R&D to sales, can be done in China.

Demand in the Chinese market is rapidly moving toward refrigerators, washing machines and other established appliance items that are high quality and large.  The demand for air conditioners and microwave ovens is just starting to take off, especially in China*s largest cities.  The SSEC complex at Suzhou is expected to play an important role in Samsung*s position in the Chinese appliance market.

Corporate News : Digital VOD ATM Set-top Box CommerciallyViable

.To provide a favorable position in the US video-on-demand (VOD) settop box market.
.Technology can also be applied to Korean digital cable TV business.

The race has been heating up among electronics companies to develop digital set-up boxes that can provide VOD services.  Samsung Electronics Co. has announced that it has come out with a digital asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) settop box (model name: SSD-200F).

The SSD-200F is currently the only settop box that can be connected with commercial VOD service networks using ATM transmission hardware.  By developing the new device, SEC has secured a technology base for the VOD business and has acquired an advantageous position in the US VOD settop box market.

The SSD-200F has been put to work in a test service system in the US that incorporates commercial ATM transmission hardware developed by BBT Co. of the US.  When this service begins full-scale operation, it will target 2 million subscribers, representing a US$ 1.5 billion settop box market.  As VOD services become more widespread in the US, the demand for settop boxes is expected to explode.

ATM transmission hardware is capable of simultaneously sending a variety of data (video, audio, character, etc. ) and this hardware is becoming the standard for the VOD industry.   Most new transmission systems being built in advanced markets are using the ATM standard.

ATM settop boxes are now being developed by Philips, Divicom, NEC and Hewlett-Packard, but Samsung is the first to develop an ATM set-up box that can be connected with the BBT optical transmission hardware now being tested for commercial application.  Moreover, Samsung*s SSD-200F can be used to provide digital cable TV service to the VOD service.

Samsung Electronics is now focusing research efforts on the development of a multi-functional subscriber terminal that can handle such diverse function as digital broadcast stystems, the Internet, and digital video discs.

 TERMINOLOGY
VOD (Video On Demand ) :
VOD is a new service by which subscribers can select what videos they want to watch at any time via their telephone line.  The on-line video they receive can be stopped during play, rewound or fast forwarded just like when using a VCR, so VOD service is far more convenient that the conventional video rental service.

The VOD system digitizes video data into  0*s and 1*s at the telephone substation and transmits that data to the subscriber via the telephone line.  Optical cable is required to transmit the data fast enough to make the system practical.

The telephone substation has video service hardware as well as a data base of digitized movies than can be called up for transmission to subscribers on request.  The video server not only transmits the video, but also calculates and charges the user fees.

 ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode)  :
The ATM switching system can transmit digital signals between the video server and the user at 155Mbps or faster.  Therefore, it has become the standard for VOD service.

 Settop box :
The settop box decompresses audio and video signals transmitted from the video server through the digital network to the home. It then sends those signals in their original form to the TV set.

 MPEG-2 :
The Moving Picture Experts Group designates names for different types of moving picture data compression technology. MPEG-2 will also be the standard for compressing DVDs, which are expected to make their market debut at the end of this year.

Corporate News : First PCS Terminals Arrive in The US

. Samsung to supply 1.7 million PCS terminals to Sprint.
. Exports of the world's smallest wireless data communications terminal to be promoted.
. Samsung to invest US$ 950 million in new product development and overseas operations buildup over the next 5 years.

On September 20 Samsung Electronics Co. (SEC) announced that it had finalized an agreement to supply code division multiple access (CDMA) personal communications service (PCS) terminals to Sprint Spectrum L.P. of the US.  The announcememt was made at PCS shows  simultaneously held in Seoul and San Francisco.  The 3-year contract calls for Samsung to supply 300,000 units in 1997, 1 million units in 1998 and 400,000 units in 1999, for a total of 1.7 million units worth about US$ 600 million.  The agreed upon brand name will be Sprint-Samsung.

Samsung Electronics assigned 40 researchers and spent about US$ 6.2 million to develop the supersmall (54mm x 146mm), superslim (22mm thick) and superlight (210g) PCS terminal.  It has the capability to access analog or digital systems (the same feature as current cellular phones) and can use the 1.9 G Hz radio frequency, which has been reserved in the US for personal communications services.

Bear Stearns & Corp. , the US consulting company  specializing in telecommunications, expects a rapid surge in demand for PCS terminals in the US market.  Their prediction is 2.5 million units of the next-generation device in 1997, 6 million units in 1998, 8.5 million units in 1999 and 10 million units in 2000 (a total of 27 million units).

 Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD)
Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics is first in the world to develop the cellular digital packet data (CDPD) system, a wireless data communications terminal that supports the Internet.  Samsung expects it can export large quantities of the CDPD terminals to the US (aiming at 42% of the population, or 150 million peoptle), Canada and Mexico.

Some 20 researchers at Samsung Information Systems America (SISA), located in San Jose CA, developed the CDPD terminal unit at a cost of US$ 7.5 million.  It is 58 mm wide, 154 mm long, and 21.5 mm thick and weighs just 205 grams.  It uses a large LCD panel and can send or receive 64 characters ( 16/line x 4 lines ) of data at one time.  At the same time, it has all the functions of a regular cellular phone.

Roaming agreements have already been finalized in the major US geographical areas among AT&T Wireless, Ameritech, GTE Mobilnet, and BANM in order to expand services nationwide.  By 1999, about 4.2 million people in the US are expected to be receiving CDPD wireless services.  To secure a leading position in this high growth market, Samsung is building a new plant at Kumi, Korea to exclusively mass-produce CDPD hardware.  Construction is scheduled for completion in November, allowing Samsung to start exports to the US.

Starting with the US, Samsung will aggressively go after the world market for CDPD terminals.  Development of new models will be done in the US, the UK and Japan; offshore production facilities will be established in the UK, Mexico and China, and local sales networks will be opened in the US, Europe and Asia.  This global system, to be built up over the next 5 years, will require an investment of  US$ 950 million.  By 2001, the company expects to have sold 30 million units, worth US$ 3.4 billion, making Samsung one of the world*s top 3 suppliers of CDPD terminals.

REFERENCE DATA:

SPRINT SPECTRUM L.P.
Sprint Spectrum L.P.:  Sprint, the largest PCS provider in the US, formed a consortium with Comcast Corp., Cox Communication, Inc., Tele-Communications,  Inc. (TCI) and Wirelessco L.P. in 1995 to take part in the bidding for rights to use the radio frequency designated for PCS.  The consortium paid US$ 2.11 billion to obtain the licenrses to serve 29 major US cities, representing a potential market of 190 million people (or 80% of the US population).  Commercial service is scheduled to start up at the end of 1996.  Sprint employs about 2,000 people and has 33 offices around the US.

DEFINITION OF CELLULAR DIGITAL PACKET DATA

The paging system, delivered to Shanghai Guomai Communications Co., Ltd., has a capacity to handle 1.2 million subscribers. The system was formally opened at a ceremony attended by over 200 dignitaries on November 26. Other companies bidding for the project were Motorola Inc. and Glenayre Technologies Inc. (US-based companies).

Earlier this year (April 4th) Samsung Electronics signed a paging system contract with Yunnan Post & Telegraph Administration Bureau. The agreement calls for supplying a pager system that will serve the entire Yunnan province.

Samsung Electronics will supply US$25 million worth hardware over a 3-year period, including 110 paging systems each with the capacity to handle 1 million subscribers as well as 500 base stations, audio mailboxes, and transceivers. The turnkey project includes supply, installation and support services.

This year, no more than 30 million people in China had pager access. That figure is expected to increase to 260 million people (or 20% of the population) by the year 2000. Therefore, demand for paging systems with the capacity to handle over 1 million subscribers is set to take off in the country`s numerous tensely populated cities. With the recent paging system delivery, Samsung stands in good position to capture a major share of this world`s largest market.

. Samsung signs portable terminal contract
. Plans call for GMPCS operation and terminal sales to begin in 2000.
. Samsung to gain advantage in hand-held phones and satellite broadcasting.

SEOUL, Korea - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (SEC) has made a move to become fully involved in the Global Mobile Personal Communications by Satellite (GMPCS) business, a system that allows linking people anytime, anywhere on the planet via intermediate circuit orbit (ICO) satellites. Earlier this month (November 19), Samsung Electronics signed a contract to supply GMPCS handsets to ICO Global Communications Ltd. of the UK.

Samsung first got into GMPCS business in January 1995 when the company formed ICO Korea consortium together with Korea Telecom and Shinsegi Telecom Inc. The new agreement is a chance for Samsung to further solidify its position as a leader in next-generation mobile communications.

By utilizing its state-of-the-art CDMA (code division multiple access) technology know-how, Samsung Electronics will be developing hand-held GMPCS terminals. The new terminals will be dual mode, capable of working with both satellite and GSM/CDMA cellular networks. The company plans to complete development of first GMPCS terminals in 1998 and production will take place in Korea and Samsung Wynyard Park, an electronics complex located in the UK. Terminal sales are expected to start in the year 2000 when full commercial service is projected to start.

Unlike the communications satellites currently in operation, GMPCS systems, most of them are scheduled to come into operation within the next five years, will make use of a group of non-geostationary satellites moving around the Earth in low or medium orbit, transferring signals to earth stations or between each other. They could offer users a way to make phone calls, send fax and even transfer multimedia data from and to anywhere in the world, including remote areas or parts of tthe world with poor fixed line telecommunications infrastructure.

GMPCS is expected to be widely used. Potential customers and applications include cellular phone users, businessmen, information-related institutes, transport companies, small ships, coastal navigation users, short distance plane flights, emergency rescue, general travelers, and geographical regions without basic telecommunications facilities and cellular systems facilities.

ABOUT GMPCS
GMPCS is a satellite-based mobile communications system designed primarily to provide services to hand held phones. The system will offer digital voice, data, facsimile, and a suite of messaging services anywhere in the intended environments world-wide.

The basic terminal will be a hand-held device, similar in size, weight and design to current cellular units. These hand-held units will be dual mode, capable of working with both satellite and cellular/PCS networks. Other terminal types are expected to include dedicated data, car, commercial vehicle, maritime, aeronautical as well as semi-fixed and supervisory control and data acquisition units.

The ICO`s GMPCS system will comprise ten operational satellites and two in-orbit spares operating in intermediate circular orbit at an altitude of 10,355 km. Divided equally between two orthogonal planes, each 45 degrees to the equator, these will provide complete, continuous overlapping coverage of the earth's surface. The first launch is scheduled for 1998.

Satellites will communicate with ground networks through ICO's own network -the ICON ET. This will consist of twelve earth stations or satellite access nodes (SANs) located around the globe. The SANs will provide the primary interface with the ICO satellites for routing traffic and maintaining certain customer data. The SANs will also link with gateways that will serve as the primary interface with public switched
telephone, mobile rand data networks.

ABOUT ICO
ICO Global Communications (ICO) was established in January 1995 as a private company to provide satellite-enabled personal mobile global communications services. The company will commence full commercial service in the year 2000.

The company is registered in multiple locations as a legal entity including England. It employs 150 people world-wide from 24 different nationalities. ICO`s capitalization to date is US$ 1.5 billion, raised from share subscription from international public and private organizations. Corporate News : SAMSUNG Develops 5.0-gigabyte Hard Disk Drive

.One disk can store the equivalent of 106,000 standard newspaper pages.
.Three models with recording density ranging from 1.67 to 5.0 gigabytes.
.Transmission speed is 33.3 MB/sec.

(SEOUL, Korea) - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (SEC) recently unveiled its latest industry leading high-density hard disk drives (HDD) with recording densities  ranging from 1.67 to 5.0 gigabytes. PCs are increasingly operating in a "memory-hungry" multimedia environment, so research efforts at Samsung have been stepped up to expand memory capacity.
Samsung Electronics put some 50 researchers to work on a US$6 million, seven month project to develop a hard disk drive with 1.67 gigabytes of memory on a single disk - the densest memory yet achieved anywhere. The new device will be on the market in the first quarter of 1997.
The research project resulted in three hard disk drive versions: a 1-disk unit with 1.67 gigabyte capacity, a 2-disk unit with 3.2 gigabytes of memory and a 3-disk unit totaling 5.0 gigabytes. A single disk can store the equivalent of approximately 106,000 standard English language newspaper pages of data - nearly seven years worth of newspapers (based on 42 pages/day).
Samsung's new hard disk drives transmit data at 33.3 megabytes (or 106.5 still frames of video data) per second. It can show full screen video, instead of the half screen performance of most multimedia PCs. A super-fast spindle motor transmits data fast enough to support full motion picture video.
A sophisticated Magnetic Read head and Super Extended Partial Response For Maximum Likelihood (E2PR4ML) signal processing increases track recording density 48% over other products, from 5,400 to at least 8,000 tracks per inch. High precision servo technology is applied to strengthen the sound and overcome flaws in the head output speed resulting from the improved recording density. A single 3.5" disk can store 5,344 still pictures or 204 hours eof audio data.
This kind of high-performance hard disk drive is expected to lead the world market in the second half of 1997, as multimedia PCs come out with stronger audio/video functions that can store DVD data.

Samsung Electronics first marketed 40MB hard disk drive in 1989. To narrow the technology gap with the competition, the company expanded its research force, set up a hard disk drive research laboratory in Silicon Valley (US) and built up two plants in Korea (Kumi and Suwon). With this latest hard disk drive, Samsung Electronics is believed to be at least a couple of months ahead of its competition.
Samsung's state-of-the-art plant in Kumi has four automated production lines and four semi-automated production lines with an annual capacity of 6.5 million hard disk drives. That capacity will be expanded to 27 million units by 2000 and to 31 million units the next year, representing an estimated 11% of the world market and making Samsung Electronics the world's fourth largest maker of this key PC component.
Next year, high-performance hard disk drivers will commonly have disks with a capacity in excess of 1 gigabyte. The world market for hard disk drives is estimated at 120 million units in 1996, 140 million units in 1997, 170 million units in 1998, 200 million units in 1999 and 240 million units in 2000 - an annual growth of 21%.

Corporate News : SAMSUNG to Market PC with DVD-ROM

(SEOUL, Korea) - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (SEC) invested some US$10 million and the efforts of around 60 researchers to develop a Digital Video Disk (DVD) Read Only Memory (ROM) drive (model number SDR-130). DVD has seven times the memory capacity of a regular CD-ROM.

Samsung has now installed the device in a personal computer, along with a MPEG2 (compression) and AC-3 (DolbyTM surround sound) decoder cards to provide the full screen picture and sound quality found in movie theater. Other built-in features include a PentiumTM 166MHz CPU, 32 megabytes of basic memory, a 3.2-gigabyte hard disk drive, a 36.6Kbps fax modem and a 64-bit graphics card.

Wide screen compression is included, so the user can play DVD titles in the conventional 4:3 (horizontal-to-vertical ratio) or 16:9 wide screen. The sound track can be played in up to eight different languages, and on-screen subtitles can be made in as many as 32 different languages.

Industry watchers predict that the DVD-ROM will soon replace the CD-ROM in multimedia PCs. By the second half of 1997, the proliferation of DVD-ROMs and development of MPEG2 software are expected to bring prices down enough that the DVD-ROM PC will become commonplace, and competition among companies making the products will be very severe. Samsung's multimedia PC (model name: Magic Station #M555D) will go on sale in Korea in January 1997. Exports will start few  months later. In Korea, Samsung expects to sell about 100,000 units in 1997.

Samsung Electronics recently commercialized its own DVD player, and now having a DVD-ROM PC of its own, is ready to compete head to head with its Japanese and American rivals.

Corporate News : SAMSUNG Commercializes CD-R Compatible DVD Pickup

.First single-lens version.
.Decisive technology for marketing DVD-ROM.
.Mass production to begin in February 1997.

(SEOUL, Korea) - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (SEC) has recently commerciali zed a backward compatible optical DVD pickup which can also read compact discs (CDs), and CD-recordable (CD-R) discs. While CD-R discs are spreading worldwide, attention has lately focused on DVD-ROM which will be the next-generation optica l memory device used in PCs. The DVD-ROM drive market is expected to emerge worldwide next year, but the success or failure of the product hinges on the capability to playback CD-R discs. With so much at stake, Samsung's commercialization of the new pickup is very important.

Samsung engineers added a holographic optical element and 780nm wavelength laser diode to the company's unique annular masked single-lens pickup, and thus succeeded in reading CD-R as well as DVD and CD discs with a single optical pickup.
The device has many advantages in addition to its improved functions. The cost increase is small; the architecture is simple and assembly is easy, facilitating miniaturization. Optical efficiency is high, so this technology can be adapted for DVD-RAM as well. In fact, it can be used with virtually all optical recording and playback systems.

To date, no company has commercialized an optical pickup that can playback both DVD and CD-R discs. The currently available DVD pickups that can playback compact discs have various approaches to the task, but they all use laser diodes with the DVD standard 650nm wavelength as the light source. CD-R discs only respond to 780nm wavelength and current DVD pickups cannot be used to playback CD-R discs.
In October several leading companies simultaneously completed development of commercially viable DVD-Video players. Samsung Electronics has put its version on the market in November. Now, Samsung haes managed to be first in developing a DVD/CD optical pickup that playbacks even CD-R discs, solidifying the company'sposition in DVD pickup technology.Five patents are pending for this latest technology, and Samsung Electronicsalready has 11 patents for its annular mask format. The competitiveness of Samsung's DVD products has been improved. Mass production of the new pickup is scheduled to begin next February, by which time the function of the actuator component will be greatly improved. The pickup will be adaptable to CD-ROM drivers that operate at 16X speed or faster.Samsung Electronics Company Ltd., a US$21 billion flagship company of US$87 billion, Korean-based Samsung Group, is a world leader in the electronics sector, with operations in more than 60 countries.  The company develops, manufacturesand markets audio and video products, household electronics goods, computers and peripheral products, display products, telecommunications and informative systems, software tools and semiconductors.

CD-recordable (CD-R):
A CD-ROM format, with 650 megabytes of memory, that enables you to record data onto compact discs so that  regular CD-ROM drives can read it. With a CD-R drive, you can record data onto a recordable disc on different occasions, known toexperts as multiple sessions. As PCs become multimedia capable, they have rapidly become a popular storage medium around the world.

DVD Variations:
Officially, DVD does not stand for anything; it is simply the name adopted for a family of related optical disc formats. Five variations of DVD are introduced below:

.DVD-ROM: a high capacity data storage medium, similar to CD-ROM;
.DVD-Video: a specific application of DVD designed to deliver (mainly) linear motion picture content;
.DVD-Audio: a specific application of DVD designed for audio-only uses (similar to CD-Audio);
.DVD-R (Recordable): a variatio

The basic capabilities that DVD-ROM brings are a large storage capacity, from 4.7 gigabytes (single layer single sided) to 17 gigabytes (dual layer double sided); a fast transfer rate; and the potential for faster access speed and layerto layer access jumps. The spin speed of the single layer disc is a constant linear velocity of 3.49 meters/ second, slower than today's multi-speed CD-ROM drives. The user data read rate is 11.08 Mb/s (Megabits per second) with an audio/video media payload of 9.8 Mb/s or 1.225 MB/s (about equal to an 8X CD-ROM). The difference is due to a shorter wavelength laser (650 nanometers) and denser pits, which are as small as 0.40 micrometers for single layer discs, 10% bigger if double layer is used;and the track pitch is only 0.74 micrometers.

Corporate News : SAMSUNG Breaks Ground for 3rd TFT-LCD Line

Seoul, Korea, January 6, 1997 : Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (SEC) has been a ggressively pursuing the development of its thin-film-transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) business. To be a future market leader in TFT-LCDs, the company has recently started to construct a next-generation production facility at Cheonan, Korea.

Investment in the new facility will total around US$900 million over a two-year period. Samsungs third TFT-LCD production line, scheduled for startup in mid-1998, wi ll be capable of handling thirty thousand (30,000) 600x720mm glass substrates a month. This new line will be in addition to Samsung's existing TFT-LCD productio n lines for the 2nd-generation 370x470mm glass substrates and the 3rd-generation 550x650mm glass substrates at Kiheung, Korea.

Samsung Electronics will be the first in the industry to adopt the 600x720mm size, which allows the company to produce six 13.3-inch Extended Graphics Array (XGA - 1,024x760xRGB 2.36 million pixels) panels for notebook PCs from a single glass substrate.

This size also makes possible the production of six 13.3-inch S uper Extended Graphics Array (SXGA - 1,280x1,024xRGB 3.93 million pixels) panels or four 17.1-inch SXGA panels for monitors from each glass substrate.

Samsung selected the 600x720mm size because the demand for 13.3-inch XGA scre ens used on high performance notebook computers is increasing rapidly. At the sa me time, the company has the capability to turn out wide viewing angle, bright, high contrast, and low power consumption 13.3-inch SXGA panels (used to replace 15-inch cathode ray tube monitors) and 17.1-inch SXGA panels (which will replace 20-inch CRT monitors).

Production equipment designed for 550x650mm glass substrates, which has been proven to be stable in production, can be altered to accommodate the new 600x720 mm glass substrates. Therefore, the new glass substrate size has been recommende d as the next standard for the production lines used by members of the US Displa y Consortium (USDC). The 650x830mm size has also been discussed as the one to su cceed 550x650mm glass substrates, but that size has yet to be proven stable in a ctual production. Nine 12.1-inch panels can be made from 650x830mm size glass su bstrate. In addition, 1x1m glass substrate has been suggested, but more time is needed to make this one commercially viable.

Samsung's announced investment in its next production line is expected to hav e a profound effect on determining how other players in the TFT-LCD industry inv est. This is because the size of the glass substrate has a major impact on the s uccess or failure of the operation. Deciding the size is based on accurately ana lyzing and predicting target markets and infrastructure (such as the capability of production facilities to adapt to future markets and materials used in TFT-LC D components). Samsung Electronics has recommended a glass substrate size center ed on market forces, which is seen as an inducement for other makers to adopt th is size as their standard.

The Samsung Group's involvement in semiconductors has been a springboard for entry into the TFT-LCD business. Samsung Display Devices Co. supplies the color filters; Samsung Corning Co. provides the glass substrates and Samsung Electroni cs makes the driver ICs. This synergy results in much greater competitiveness th an other companies involved in TFT-LCDs.

Samsung Electronics' monthly TFT-LCD output is worth more than US$40 million, and TFT-LCD sales in 1997 are projected to be far in excess of US$300 million. Samsung is expanding its supply of TFT-LCDs to leading computer makers such as T oshiba, IBM, and Apple. If the company's growth trend continues at the current p ace, annual TFT-LCD sales by 2001 will be over US$2 billion, making Samsung one of the world's top makers.

The world TFT-LCD market in 1996 was US$6.5 billion and is expected to jump t o US$10 billion in 1997. As TFT-LCDs replace CRTs in desktop monitors, annual sa les are predicted to reach US$20 billion by the year 2000. Demand for TFT-LCDs c urrently is some 30 higher than supply, and materials are very hard to find.

Corporate News : SAMSUNG Merges 1M DRAM with Logic Device

Seoul, Korea, January 17, 1997: Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (SEC) has come out with its first mass production prototype of a Merged DRAM with Logic (MDL) device, using next-generation "system on a chip" (SOC) design technology. The MDL80 is a fusion of 1~2-megabit dynamic random access memory (DRAM) and application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) device that has been designed with 0.5-micron processing technology. It can operate on either 3.3 or 5.0 volts, is compatible with conventional ASICs and can be used in various value-added products. Mass production is scheduled for startup in March.

The emerging market for embedded DRAM logic chips totaled US$100 million in 1996, is expected to double this year and will reach US$600 million in 1998. As application of the devices become commonplace, annual demand will soar, totaling at least US$3 billion by the turn of the century.

When memory and non-memory elements are integrated on a single chip, the time required to transmit data between two chips is eliminated. Therefore, overall processing speed is increased, improving system function. There is also no need for input/output terminals, so energy consumption is reduced.

Other benefits include a reduced board size and improved system reliability enabling lower production costs. The DRAM market has been moving from 1M and 4M chips to 16M and 64M chips, so the new MDL chip will help alleviate finished product manufacturers' difficulties in procuring the now scarce lower capacity DRAMs.

Applications for MDL devices will include data storage media (hard disk drives, CD-ROMs) and portable multimedia products (PDAs, digital cameras) that have low capacity requirements and use 1M and 4M DRAMs. They are also expected to be used in 3-D graphics chip sets for PCs, set top boxes and DVDs as well as for making one-chip CPU-DRAMs for network computers.

To stay in step with current systems trends, Samsung Electronics decided in 1995 to focus on developing MDL devices first as the initial phase of SOC product development. MDL devices retain the functions and degree of integration of DRAMs, yet they are customer-oriented and easy to design.

In general, grafting DRAMs to ASIC processes increased the physical size of the DRAM 1.5 times, causing price competitiveness to drop. Conversely, when grafting ASICs to DRAM processing, the ASIC lost around one full generation of functions. The winner in this market will be the manufacturer who can make the most price competitive processor without compromising the advantages of either the DRAM or the ASIC.

In the DRAM field, Samsung Electronics enjoys a competitive edge and has some of the most advanced technology. Taking advantage of these strengths, Samsung has embarked on a continuing research program to develop MDL devices that best suit user needs. This effort has resulted in the mass production of the MDL80. In the second half of 1996, Samsung also plans to complete development of the MDL85, which can have either a 1M DRAM or 4M DRAM built in, and MDL90, which is a 16M DRAM built onto an ASIC device with 0.35-micron processing. These more advanced versions are scheduled to be in mass production by the end of this year.

Samsung Electronics is also developing single-chip versions of the 32-bit RISC chip by Advanced RISC Machines Ltd., which features high-performance RISC MPU technology; the Oak 16-bit DSP by DSP Group, Inc.; and an Analog Digital Converter (ADC) / Digital Analog Converter (DAC).
To date, the one-chip DRAM is not available in a variety of versions. It takes 2-3 months to develop new designs to accommodate specific customer needs. This is  longer than the time needed to develop new logic elements for conventional ASIC devices, making it difficult to meet customers' schedules for getting their products to market. The relatively long development time has been, therefore, an obstacle to expanding the market for DRAM-ASIC devices.

However, Samsung has standardized a wide range of DRAM specifications, so configurations requested by any customer can be made virtually on the spot. The reduced chip design time shortens the time required for customers to develop their products so that they can get them to market ahead of the competition.

Samsung Electronics also boasts outstanding testing know-how for ensuring that reliability levels remain as high for all products. The DRAM elements are tested first and then, after adjustments are made, the entire device is tested. As a result, Samsungs embedded DRAM-ASIC products are just as reliable as regular DRAMs, which must meet very strict criteria.

Samsung considers the MDL devices as one of its most important strategic product areas and will focus ongoing research on them. Samsung aims to be one of the worlds leading producers of embedded memory devices by strengthening customer support and by being first to develop and supply next-generation versions. The company plans to have devices with 0.25-micron processing by 1998 and 0.18-micron processing by the turn of the century.

Corporate News : SAMSUNG Continues to Regulate 16M DRAM Production

.Samsung Electronics will continue to regulate the production volume of the 16-megabit DRAM chips
on an on-going basis: The market price of the 16M DRAM chip has been falling severely since the end of 1995,
getting close to a point where the market price and production cost do not break even.
Thus from the third quarter of 1996, Samsung Electronics has been downsizing its production volume of
16M DRAM chips, which seems to have started to show positive results beginning of this year.

.Samsung Electronics will regulate its production cuts on the basis that it does not effect the business
of its long-term contracted clients. However, until the prices rise to a reasonable level,
regulation of the 16M DRAM production capacity will continue.

.The reason for such action is that the market price of the 16M DRAMs has fallen nearly
beyond the production costs, not just for Samsung Electronics, but for other worldwide producers
in such countries as Japan and  the USA. It appeared to have  been widely understood within the
industry, that further price reductions would threaten the entire business of DRAM manufacturers.

.Due to the reduction of the 16M DRAM volume, fabrication capacity will be available for increased production
of SRAMs, graphic memory and other memory chips,  ASIC, non-memory chips such as Micom and embedded DRAM logic chips.

Samsung Electronics Company Ltd., a US$21 billion company of the US$87 billion (95) Samsung Group, is a
world leader in electronics, with operations in more than 60 countries. The company challenges itself to
make consumer electronics, semiconductors and industrial electronics that are effective, useful, simple
and powerful. According to Dataquest, Samsung Electronics was the 7th largest semiconductor maker
in the world in 1996. Samsung is the world`s largest DRAM producer with 17 global market share .

Corporate News : SEC Targets `97 Sales at W20.7 Trillio

Seoul, Korea, February 4, 1997: Samsung Electronics Co. (SEC) has announced its 1997 business plans, which include W17.3 trillion in business from domestic operations and a total sales target of W20.7 trillion -- when including overseas operations. Newly appointed SEC President & CEO Jong-yong Yun, who is to take charge of all the electronics related operations of the Samsung Group (the Electronics Subgroup), held a press conference on February 3. President Yun stated that the electronics industry has already begun to feel the coming of the 21st century, which is still four years away. He went on to say that as the business environment transforms, Samsung will be placing priority on creating an aggressive, future-oriented approach to maintain its leading position.

In this connection, SEC is restructuring its business. The company has earmarked W4.5 trillion to invest in overseas operations, R&D, new facilities and expanding involvement in displays (thin film transistor liquid displays, etc.), multimedia (DVDs, etc.), micro products (MSP chips, Alpha chips, etc.), personal communication services (PCS) and networking communications. At least 80% of the budget will be devoted to future oriented businesses (businesses with high growth potential).

SEC is working to remain competitive amid a rapidly changing business environment. Therefore, for the year of 1997 three principle objectives have been put forth:

Business management will focus on decentralization, speed and simplicity.
The organization will be restructured, and resources will be concentrated on key areas.
Attention will be focused on improving quality, design and services, which is the so-called
     `soft` aspects of Samsung.

SEC`s sales target for 1997 is W20.7 trillion, which breaks down into W9.8 trillion in exports, W7.5 trillion in domestic sales, and W3.4 trillion from overseas operations. Importantly, 16% of all SEC revenue will be generated from outside Korea, a figure that is close to the performance of Korea`s 10th largest business conglomerate.

The Samsung Electronics Subgroup (consisting of Samsung Electronics Co., Samsung Display Devices Co., Samsung Electro-Mechanics Co., Samsung Corning and Samsung Data Systems), plans to work closely together to achieve a combined total sales of W28 trillion (US$32.5 billion) in 1997. Corporate News : SEC Sets '97 Telecom Sales at W3.7 Trillion

Seoul, Korea, February 12, 1997: Samsung Electronics Co. (SEC) has announced its plans for the 1997 telecommunications business.  These plans include a total sales target of W3.8 trillion, which breaks down into W2.8 trillion from the domestic market and W1 trillion from the exports.

Officials from SEC's Telecommunications Division ( led by President & CEO Hee-choon Park) held a press conference on February 12 at the Chosun Hotel in Seoul.  They predicted that due to the deregulation of the domestic telecommunications market, preparations in facing such an age of `unrestricted competition` will be made.  Thus, officials of Samsung stressed that 1997 would be a very important year for laying out the groundwork to make SEC one of the world's top five manufacturers of multimedia telecommunications products.  In this connection, they plan to strengthen the company's international competitiveness by establishing strategic alliances with leading overseas companies.

To prepare for the survival in the "era of unrestricted competition," Samsung Electronics announced the following five principal strategies for this year.
  (1)  An aggressive approach in the development of its core strategic businesses.
  (2)  restructuring its existing operations based on the interest of maximizing its profits.
  (3)  strategically expanding in its overseas business.
  (4)  strengthening its R&D capabilities which as a result, will automatically come in serving its fifth strategy,
  (5)  secure international competitiveness through financially sound business.

Investments made in the Telecommunications Division (for the year alone) is to be W240 billion for the new facilities, and W410 billion in R&D.  This years budget of W650 billion, 27 higher than in 1996, reflects the seriousness of Samsung Electronics management strategy, which is to become one of the world's top five makers of telecommunications hardware. To achieve this ambitious goal, SEC, first of all, is determined to strengthen and sustain the already positive marketing position of its CDMA (cellular, PCS)  terminals and systems, fiber optics and multifunctional office machines.   Second, determined to focus on the development in the areas of mobile telecommunications systems (FPLMTS), asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) switching systems, global mobile personal communications services (GMPCS) and wireless local loops (WLL).

Samsung Electronics predicts that mobile communications and networking will be the areas of high-growth for the 21st century, and thus has decided to pursue them aggressively.

The company has secured a leading position in its new domestic market for the code division multiple access (CDMA) terminals and systems.  Now, Samsung is taking a step further-up in its marketing activities, aimed at overseas service providers with an objective to truly globalize its telecommunications business.  SEC also plans to develop new "strategic" products on a faster pace, localize the production of key parts and components, and secure essential technology in order to enhance product competitiveness.

Another core area of the business is networking, and SEC will focus on developing strategic product areas such as LAN servers and ATM switching systems.  Such developments in this area will be used for the next-generation networking markets of the overseas area.

Existing business areas will be restructured based on the interest of maximizing profitability ; businesses lacking in competitiveness will be turned over to small and medium-sized manufacturers either domestic or abroad. In otherwords, Business with limited profit-making potential will be phased out. Products in the high-growth area, such as printers and key phones will be fully supported in its development.  Also, SEC's competitiveness in switching systems and data transmission networks will be improved, and expanded as well.

To broaden the overseas business activities, new retail and production facilities will be secured, and much involvement will be made in providing mobile telecommunications services.  Last year, overseas sales amounted to just 20 of total sales, but the overseas figure is expected to be increased to 26 in 1997  and to reach 55 by the year 2000.The overseas R&D network in the US, UK, Russia, India and Japan will be  reinforced.  Ultimately, allowing them to conduct their merchandising, development of new products, sales and after-sales service according to the needs of its local environment.

Meanwhile, in Korea, completion of an optical cable plant at Kumi is being accelerated.  The cell production method is to be applied in order to aggressively develop SEC`s fiber optics business.

SEC Telecommunications Division President Park stressed at the news conference that the company needs a new corporate culture; if it is to grow into one of the world`s top five makers of multimedia telecommunications hardware.  He said that the Division would implement three programs in this regard; a more open organization, more involvement through dialog and discussion, a future-oriented management system that can manage change.  Thus, as a result, a synergy effect which will maximize cooperation among organizational units will be established.

Corporate News : SEC Establishes Service Subsidiaries in CIS

Seoul, Korea, February 17, 1997:Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. announced that it will be accelerating into the emerging markets of China, the CIS and India.  At the same time, the company is bolstering its overseas business by establishing well equipped service capabilities, the key to determining its ultimate success or failure.

Samsung Electronics exported 2 million color TVs to Russia and Eastern Europe in 1966.  To continue expanding exports to this part of the world and ensure customer satisfaction, Samsung Almaty Service Co., Ltd. (SALSC) and Samsung Ukraine Service Co., Ltd. (SUSC) were established around the beginning of this year.  The two new service subsidiaries are equipped with offices, reception desks, repair shops, training centers and parts warehouses.  They will provide  service support to a network of over 300 after-sale service providers in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kirgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Modavia.

In the first quarter of every year, these service subsidiaries will provide training to after-sales service technicians throughout the region.  Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics plans to at least double the number of after-sales service centers by the end of this year.  At the beginning stage, the after-sales service centers were supplying 75 of all parts and material in-house,  but Samsung Electronics is now bringing that figure up to 90.  Samsung also plans to offer a `traveling after-sales service` (free of charge) which is based on Samsung Electronics belief  of  going to the customer instead of simply waiting for them to come to us.

Unlike service centers previously established by Samsung Electronics, SALSC and SUSC will be responsible for local sales as well as maintenance and repair.  By localizing operations, they are expected to be operated as self-sustaining profit centers.

This year, the Customer Service Division is planning on effectively organizing the     12,000 some service centers, like depot, FSC(Factory Service Center), Semi-FSC and AST (After Service Center), located throughout our five regional headquarters and integrated manufacturing complexes.

Corporate News : SAMSUNG Electronics CBs Named

Seoul, Korea, February 19, 1997: Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. announced today that the financial journal Asiamoney reported in its February issue that convertible bonds (CBs) issued by Samsung Electronics Co. in September 1996 were the `Deal of the Year` among all Asian securities for 1996. At the beginning of every new year, Asiamoney -- the prestigious monthly magazine read by members of leading financial institutions and corporate financial officers -- rates securities in each major category (bonds, stocks, stock-related bonds).

Asiamoney selected Samsung Electronics as `Deal of the Year` for the following reason:

In spite of its dropping stock price as a result of the plunging DRAM prices in 1996, a continuing slump in the Korean stock market, and the `cold` attitudes expressed by the investors towards the Korean stock market, Samsung Electronics issue of CBs were successful due to its sound selection of appropriate investment products, guaranteed depository receipts (GDRs) and common stock convertible bonds .

Samsung Electronics disregarded the negative forecasts by securities market analysts, and created a demand five times as great as the face value of the issuance. The bonds were issued at a 25 premium (the highest among Asian CBs this year), and the price has remained at least 10 higher than what it was at issuance, making them very popular among investors. Samsung Electronics experience in raising capital on international financial markets as well as its solid investment management activities are also seen as major factors behind bond `s success. Also last year, the industry leading journal Corporate Finance, named the issuance `Deal of the Year.`

Given the current Hanbo Group scandal, Korean companies and banks are in danger of losing credibility in international markets. However, despite these difficulties, Samsung Electronics has been holding strong, and is being regarded as a model case study in the area of overseas securities issuance.

Corporate News : SAMSUNG Electronics Still Holds Strong in Telecommunication and Home Appliance Sector, Despite the f

Seoul, Korea, February 28, 1997(SEOUL): Samsung Electronics Co. (SEC), South Korea`s leading electronics manufacturer announced today at the 28th annual meeting of shareholders, its total sales of 15.9 trillion won (US$18.8 billion) for 1996,  a 2 fall from the 16.2 trillion won (US$20.9 billion) in 1995.

Net income fell 93 to 164.2 billion won (US$194.5 million), compared with 2.5 trillion won (US$3.2 billion) of 1995. The main reason behind such a drawback is the steep fall of the memory chips` market price -- generated by the oversupply of the market.

However, despite such plunges in the semiconductor business, a remarkable growth of 67  was made in the telecommunications area last year, which in total sales comes to the figure of 2.6 trillion won.  Also, with a total sales of 5.1 trillion won, the consumer electronics business generated growth of 13.5, compared to the 4.5 trillion won in 1995; the factor of growth in this sector, comes from the success of the WorldBEST TV within the emerging markets such as the CIS, and China.

In addition, though the semiconductor and computer division recorded a total sales of   8.2 trillion won, which is a fall of 19.1 compared to the previous year, continuous growth of 22 has been kept steadily within the computer division.

Thus, despite the difficulty Samsung Electronics has faced during the past year,  introductions and developments of the 64-megabit, the 1-gigabit DRAM, the DVD, and the WorldBEST Plus TV  still holds strong Samsung`s position as a world class producer of high-tech electronic goods and devices.  Furthermore,  Samsung Electronics is eager in establishing itself once again as a leader in the non-memory area, mostly focused on the development of the Alpha chip (CPU), and the TFT-LCD.  Operation in the multimedia area will be also actively carried out.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., headquarters based in Seoul, is a world leader in the electronics sector, with operations in more than 60 countries. The company develops, manufactures, and markets audio and video products, household electronics goods, computers & peripheral products, display products, telecommunication & information systems, software tools & semiconductors. Corporate News : Interdigital, SAMSUNG and Siemens Unveil First B-CDMATM Hardware for The Wireless Local Loop

InterDigital Communications Corporation (ASE: IDC), Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd and Siemens AG today unveiled the world's first Broadband-Code Division Multiple AccessTM Wireless Local Loop (WLL) hardware. The B-CDMATM solution is designed to offer the most comprehensive range of services and the highest quality transmission of any wireless local loop technology. B-CDMATM technology's broader bandwidth is designed to permit advanced features such as ISDN and bandwidth on demand for services such as wireline quality voice, high speed fax, data and multimedia, including video. This capability will enable carriers to deliver ISDN to the desktop in a fixed wireless application and ultimately in portable and mobile environments.

The presentation of B-CDMATM hardware at CeBIT '97 follows a tri-partite development and manufacturing effort between InterDigital, Samsung and Siemens. The core technology was developed by InterDigital while the hardware and software were developed using the engineering resources of all three companies.

This new technology is designed to allow carriers and other network operators to optimize revenues and earnings by easily connecting new subscribers and providing highly profitable broadband services. B-CDMATM technology is particularly suitable for areas where it is difficult or expensive to lay cable. In congested urban areas it eliminates the cost and disruption of physically laying new cable while dramatically reducing time required to generate revenue.

Commercial availability of the B-CDMATM WLL product is planned for the first half of 1998. The first field trials are expected to be underway by the end of this year. Production will take place at Samsung's factory in Kumi, Korea and Siemens' factory in Berlin, Germany. Initially, it will be offered as a fixed wireless product that provides e-mail and internet access, high speed, high quality voice, data and video. A second phase will provide neighborhood roaming and portability within cells of 5-15 kms radius. In the planned third phase, a fully mobile product will be introduced to deliver the full range of B-CDMATM capabilities on the move.

A new chip, manufactured by LSI Logic exclusively for InterDigital, incorporates B-CDMATM technology and provides essential functionality for B-CDMATM handsets, subscriber terminals and base stations. The ASIC will integrated into the subscriber  terminal and base station which can be seen at InterDigital's stand at CeBIT '97. Testing and initial trials of the air interface by InterDigital, Samsung and Siemens have confirmed the ability to provide video communications over a fixed radio link to a laptop PC.

B-CDMATM technology distributes multiple simultaneous conversations and/or data transmissions across a broad segment of radio spectrum, typically 7.0-15 MHz wide. Each voice, fax, data or video transmission is assigned a unique code which both the transmitting and receiving ends know so that the transmission can be reassembled at the receiving end. Because of the broad spectrum, B-CDMATM technology will provide high immunity to interference and multipath propagation conditions inherent in an urban environment. B-CDMATM's resistance to interference makes it ideal for use in multiple access systems.

Target Markets Announced for B-CDMATM

As the first Broadband-CDMA hardware is launched at CeBIT Hannover, the three companies concerned, Samsung, InterDigital and Siemens, are already preparing an aggressive world wide marketing campaign, each focusing on markets where they have strong existing sales relationships.

Samsung`s current European telecommunications business has been built around significant sales in Eastern Europe. The company believes that B-CDMATM is particularly well suited to markets in Western and Eastern Europe. In Asia, Samsung has the first three trial sites planned for China, where work is expected to start later this year.

"By combining B-CDMATM wireless local loop with DLC (Digital Loop Carrier) equipment, Samsung is able to offer an exciting new telecommunications solution that is particularly well suited to the urban environment and can be introduced by existing PTTs as well as the newer generations of network operators," said Byung Kwan Bae, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Infrastructure Network Division at Samsung. "Customers expect Samsung&apos/s high level of expertise, due to our extensive experience in CDMA technology and implementation. We have already contacted a number of customers who have responded very positively," he added.  Samsung is well established in the CDMA marketplace. In February 1997, Samsung signed a major deal with Korea Telecom to supply CDMA infrastructure equipment valued at US$300 million.

B-CDMATM lends itself to installation in areas where services have been disrupted and there is a need to rebuild basic telephony services quickly and easily. For regions with more developed telecommunications services, B-CDMATM offers easy access to ISDN services via fixed wireless local loop applications. As deregulation of local access occurs around the world, B-CDMATM can be used as a technology that will allow new entrants into the market supporting services that will surpass anything currently in place.

Corporate News : SAMSUNG Electronics Moves into Chinese Telecom Market

Seoul, Korea, March 19, 1997: CDMA hardware made by Samsung Electronics will be supplied to Shanghai, China. In hopes to obtain position as the standardized technology of the telecommunication industry, producers of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) and the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) are currently under fierce competition Shanghai, where both technology coexist, is being considered as an ideal test-bed in determining which technology will eventually prevail.

After a tough bid with the industry leaders such as Motorola, and Lucent Technology, Samsung Electronics was appointed in conducting the establishment of the CDMA cellular phone network, and in providing the supply CDMA hardware to the city of Shanghai.

The turnkey contract calls for Samsung Electronics to provide China Shanghai Changcheng Mobile Communications Co., Ltd. with a switching station that has the capacity to handle 68,000 subscribers as well as 67 base stations and follow-up services. Installation is scheduled to begin in the first half of this year, and the system to be fully operational within the second half.

By winning this contract, Samsung finds significance in the fact that it has captured, and is supplying equipment to Shanghai, the largest Chinese market with the highest potential of growth, which is considered as the symbol of Chinese modernization efforts.

In introducing cellular CDMA systems in 1996, the authorities of the Chinese government opened tenders in four major cities Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Xian. Taking part in the bid were as mentioned before, major leaders of the industry such as Motorola. The bid for Shanghai were five companies Samsung Electronics, Motorola, Lucent Technology, Northern Telecom and QualComm. The results of the bid were Lucent Technology for Guangzhou, Motorola for Peking, Northern Telecomm for Xian, and Samsung for Shanghai.

It is quite clear that the Chinese are seeking for a new telecommunications standard to satisfy its market of 1.3 billion people. Therefore, Samsung Electronics` entry into the Chinese mobile telecommunications market is seen as an important milestone for Korean companies in the overseas markets.

Corporate News : SAMSUNG Electronics Launches New Environmental-friendly Monitor

Seoul, Korea, April7, 1997: Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., has come out with a new SyncMaster model monitor that satisfies the TCO 95 standards. The new model, available in 15" and 17" versions, will replace the existing SyncMaster line.

The Braun tube surface has a multiple-layer coating that greatly reduces electromagnetic emissions so a protective screen is not necessary. The coating includes a layer of superfine indium-tin oxide particles and a layer of improved silicate. It both absorbs electromagnetic emissions and reduces surface glare, reducing eye fatiqueness. Moreover, a special electromagnetic wave elimination circuit has been built in to detect electromagnetic emissions on the Braun tube surface and keep them to a minimum. The case of the monitor is made out of flame retardant plastic that generates virtually no carcinogens when being recycled. Also, the wrapping material is biodegradable plastic sheet.

As explained above, this new environmental-friendly product not only satisfied the TCO 95 requirements, but other recognized standards such as the German "Blue Angel".

Many improvements have been made to the picture quality of the next-generation monitor. The flat Braun tube has a maximum resolution of 1,600 x 1,200 pixels and a dot pitch of 0.26mm. A super-precise electron gun creates a very sharp focus, to eliminated on-screen flicker, the screen is scanned 160 times a second.

In addition multimedia functions have been greatly boosted. A plug-and-play function supports DDC 2B+ and 2B.Also, when the new SyncMaster is connected with a Macintosh computer, it can also be used with any other PC with the support of an adapter.

The operational keys of the monitor have been simplified for greater user friendliness. On-screen display software allows for easy operation of various functions from an on-screen menu; the on-screen menu software offers information in five different languages.

The SyncMaster, offered in a modern streamlined look, are already out on the market in 15" and 17" versions, and with a 21" model and other sizes soon to be launched.
