A Roman Catholic's Defense for Christmas

by: J. Meyers

According to I Timothy 4:4, "Every thing that God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, for it is sanctified by the Word of God and prayer."  God has created both us and the rest of his creation responsive to temporal rhythmic patterns (Gen. 1:14).  There are certain temporal rhythms of life that are built-in to his creation and into us.  Daily: Sun up, Sun Down.  Monthly: the cycle of the moon.  And yearly: the march of the seasons and the alternating of darkness and light, cold and warmth associated with the movement of the earth and Sun.  We ignore these patterns and we suffer the consequences!

The sun governs not only the day, but also the year (Gen. 1:14). The solar cycles are inescapable. Our own rhythms of life are influenced by the progression of the seasons.  God has created us enmeshed in the creation.  Human psychology is affected by the seasonal changes.  For example, studies have indicated a significant increase in crimes of violence during times of a full moon.  17-25% more babies are born during the waxing period of the moon than during its waning.  All you have to do is ask any OB nurse.

During the winter, the days are short, the rays of the sun are more slanted, and the weather is cold.  In the winter everything dies or at least looks and feels dead--insects, animals, vegetation--the whole world seems to shut down.  It affects us too.  The relative absence of sunlight and the dominance of darkness make us melancholy or worse.  We are psychosomatic beings. In the Spring, everything seems to come back to life--resurrected from the dead, as it were.

All of this is inherent in God's creation. The Bible recognizes this and builds on it.  Of course, the pagans pervert it.  They worship the sun and moon.  They believe that fertility and life is somehow resident in nature.  They deify the forces of nature.  And if man would just manipulate nature correctly he can also gain life for himself.  So you get pagan fertility cults and rites and other perversions.

The Bible does not completely set aside the calendar cycles because pagans pervert the meaning.  No, rather, as we have seen, God has placed the Sun, moon, and stars in the firmament to indicate festival seasons (Gen. 1:14).

The Israelite calendar did not attempt to disregard the symbolism and experience of the seasons of the year just because gentile nations perverted them. God placed the major Israelite festivals precisely at points in the year that would correspond to their meaning!

Passover takes place in the Spring because it celebrates the Israelites' resurrection from the death of Egyptian bondage.  God gave them new life.  And this new life is only possible because of the death and resurrection of the Messiah, typified by the Passover lamb.

Pentecost was held at the beginning of the Summer harvest. Tabernacles was observed during the Autumn harvest to remind the people that the source of their blessings was Christ. God established the seasonal changes when he established the sun and moon as symbols (Gen. 1:14). The Bible indicates the value of arranging the worship of the people of God so that it is keyed into the seasonal changes (Song of Songs 2:10-12; Matt. 24:33-34; John 10:22-23; John 20:15).  Recognizing these seasonal cycles and making use of them in the worship of the church is not "nature worship."  If that is the case, then God was guilty of leading his people into idolatry when he ordered the feasts of Israel to coincide with the appropriate seasons of the year.

In John 10:22-23 Jesus attends the feast of Hanukkah.  During this festival the Jews celebrated the restoration of the temple after the abomination of desecration by Antioches Epiphanes.  It was celebrated at the time of the winter solstice; just as the sun begins its annual rising (the nights are longest, the days are shortest, but that all begins to change at this point).  It was a feast of lights!  Now in Jesus, according to the Gospel of John, the light is dawning and Jesus is the light of the world.

Moreover, it is interesting to note that Hanukkah is nowhere commanded in the Hebrew Scriptures.  Yet Jesus attends and explains it in terms of himself. Jesus sets his seal of approval on a feast celebrated during the winter solstice, commemorating the rebuilding of the temple and the beginning of the dawn of new light for the people of Israel.

But, now, we know that Christ himself is the new temple (John 2:19) and his birth was the beginning of God's "tabernacling" with men (John 1:16-18).  His work was the prophesied dawn of God's great work of temple building.  His birth was the beginning of the dawning of the true light that comes into the world and that gives light to every man.  Remember the Star of Bethlehem in the night sky.  The early church recognized these truths and turned the Feast of Hanukah into the celebration of the nativity of our Lord, the True Temple.

Therefore, just as the great redemptive events recorded in the Hebrew Scriptures were keyed to the changes in the seasons--Passover in the Spring means life from the dead--so also the church ordered her Scripture readings and prayers so that the life of Christ would be correlated to the symbolic changes evident in the seasons of the year.  Easter, for example, is celebrated in the Spring when the entire created order is symbolically restored from death to life.

Consider how this works for Christmas. Why is Christmas celebrated on December 25th?  Not so much because it has much of anything to do with the date of his actual birth--although as we noted above, the early church suspected a winter birth.  Nor is it the case that the church gullibly adopted a pagan Roman holiday, the festival of the Invincible Sun (Dies Natalis Dei Solis Invicti).  The early church was not so naïve.  The date was picked for symbolic reasons.

The winter solstice occurs around December 25th (solstice from the Latin: sol = sun, and sistere = to stand still).  This is the time of the year when the Sun reaches its southern-most extremity (or to put it another way, it is the point on the Sun's ecliptic at which it is the farthest south). The longest night and the shortest day occur at this point and from this day onward the days get longer and the nights get shorter. The darkness of winter begins to give way to the light and warmth of Spring and Summer.  This continues until the summer solstice when the other extreme is reached.

What does this have to do with Christmas?  Much in every way.  Just as death and darkness give way to life and light in the yearly cycle of seasons, so also the death and darkness brought on by sin gives way to the life and light realized in the work of Jesus. Jesus birth is celebrated when the darkness of night has reached its peak, and once he is born the light begins to wax and the darkness wanes.  As the hymn reminds us:

Behold a branch is growing

As of loveliest form and grace,

As prophets sung, foreknowing;

It springs from Jesse's race

And bears one little Flower

In midst of coldest winter,

At deepest midnight hour.

The purpose of the church year, therefore, is to redeem the time, to consecrate the various seasons of the year by the word of God and by prayer (worship),
And to provide an opportunity for the people of God to give thanks and rejoice in what God has done in Christ and through his saints throughout history.  Used in this way it can be a great educational tool to teach the people the Bible (lectionary) and especially the life of Jesus Christ.

We need not fear the Christian calendar.  It has great didactic significance.  The Christian year is ordered according to the life of Jesus Christ, from his birth to his ascension and pouring out of the Holy Spirit.  It reminds us that as Christians we are in Christ.  Each year we are reminded that the yearly cycle of our lives finds its true meaning and significance in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.  It gives us occasion to celebrate the mighty acts of God in the person of Jesus Christ!   The Christian year reminds us that we are "in Christ," our time is "in Christ," and our lives are not our own.

You are always on my mind
All I do is count the days
Where are you now?

I know I never let you down
I will never go away

I really wish that you'd stay but what can we do
All the days that you've been gone I dreamed about you
And I anticipate the day that you will come home, home, home

No matter how far you are
No matter how long it takes him
Through distance and time
I'll be waiting

And if you have to walk a million miles
I'll wait a million days to see you smile
Distance and time, I'll be waiting

Distance and time, I'll be waiting
Will you take a train, to meet me where I am
Are you on your way?
I will never do anything to hurt you
I'll never live without you

I really wish that you would stay but what can we do
All the days that you've been gone I dreamed about you
And I anticipate the day that you will come home, home, home

No matter how far you are
No matter how long it takes him
Distance and time, I'll be waiting
And if you have to walk a million miles
I'll wait a million days to see you smile
Distance and time
I'll be waiting

No matter how far you are
No matter how long it takes him
Distance and time, I'll be waiting
And you can walk a million miles
I'll wait a million days to see you smile
Through distance and time, I'll be waiting

Oh oh oh
Oh oh oh
Oh oh oh

I'll be waiting
I'll be waiting
Through distance and time
I'll be waiting

You are always on my mind
All I do is count the days
Where are you now?

On December the 19th, 2009,  we had our last dinner with Fr. Ranulfo. He invited us three over to his house and prepared for us oxtail soup. Delicious. We also cooked for him pasta, and enjoyed a long, warm conversation with our beloved priest and faith prayer leader.

His words, his voice, is always so soothing and so calming. Maka feel ko at peace when we go to his house..truly a man of God.

Fr. Ranulfo, thank you so much for listening to pleas, my concerns. For always encouraging me and job and albert to strive higher and higher. For always reminding us to go to church, and to pray, and to be faithful to Marian adoration and praying the rosary. For our bible conversations. For always providing us three with powerful words of encouragement and prayer blessings during examination week.

Thank you, Fr, also for allowing us to sing in the choir and establishing a student-led choir. God is Praised.
That even tho my voice is not as 'guapo' as yours and others, you still encouraged me to sing, "Ah kanta na lang gud, kai guapo man lagi mo tanan." hahaha! Fr, we love you. You have been a blessing to us during our medical career. Your words inspire us, and remind us that GOD listens to us and our prayers.

Fr. Ranulfo, i know that i could not have survived without CHRIST'S salvation and justification in my life.
Thank you, so much. Thank you for showing us the proper way of Eucharistic Adoration.

GOD BLESS YOU, FR!

Your Spiritual Son,

3 things:

1) Her smile

2) Her warmth

3) Our conversations..which last hours.

The night of my white coat ceremony.

I went back to her apartment, sat with her, talked with her.
Gazing into her longing light brown eyes.
I fall into complacency in her beauty..justified in victory and in Love.

She ushers 3 words to me that melt my heart.
"I love you, LUCINO"

My eyes search deeply into her eyes...gazing into her soul.
I see it. Our souls match.

As my eyes swell up with tears, she says it again, "I Love You."
I kiss her, passionately.

The beauty,..the purity and innocence of two lovers who yearn for each other.

God is Good.
God's Promise is Trustworthy.

As I drive her to the airport,
I stop the car.
She, in the passenger seat, takes off her seabelt,
looks at me, embraces me. And kisses my cheeks.
I feel the warmth of her sweet kiss.
I embrace her, strong, yearning, not wanting to let go.

She opens the door, I open mine.
I help her unload her luggage.
She enters the line, my eyes staring at her face,
my eyes ready to spill tears

She looks at me with her eyes, and in comforting words says, 'See you, baby.'
I try to be strong.

I embrace her, and whisper to her ears, "I LOVE YOU...."

I walk away...drive away..

10 minutes into the drive..i break down in tears.

I love you woman...~

The famous words of Fr. Ranulfo to me, "Don't worry about the problems, just ampo. Ampo kanunay."

I must agree with it, bitaw. Ampo lang ta kanunay. Kai tagaan man jud ta ug grasya sa Ginoo sa Langit.

Whatever obstacle was set before me, I was victorious against it. Through Jesus Christ who strengthened me.

My good friends Albert and Job and I bade farewell to Fr. Ranulfo, our catholic priest.
Completion of our 2 years of basic sciences in medicine could not have happened without our daily bread in Christ, as well as being inspired by the Blessed Word that was given to us in Mass. We will miss you Fr. Ranulfo!
Thank you for the prayers, and most of all, please continue to pray for us as we begin our new journey as medical interns.

FORWARD IN CHRIST!

:)

It was an honor serving as eucharistic minister as well as minister of the word in our weekly mass.
Job, Albert and I want to share our experiences with Fr. Ranulfo, who always prayed for us and blessed us before our examinations, and prayed for us to the Lord Jesus Christ. Inpsiring us to do good and work for good.
THE LORD IS GLORIFIED!

Fr. Ranulfo hails from Cebu, Philippines.
And it was always a blessing to hear him and converse with him as he tried to talk to me in Cebuano, and then talk to Albert in Illongo and then talk to Job in Tagalog. Truly, a well-versed man!
God Bless you, Father!

We Love you!

It is Good to Celebrate and Remember His Birth.
For in Remembering His Birth, we accept His Death that was willed by the Father.
His Death, which was necessary for the salvation of our iniquitous sins.

Rejoice!
Proclaim the Good News in the rooftops, throughout the land, throughout distance shores!
For the Righteous Lord, the Wonderful Counselor, Heaven's PERFECT LAMB has come to the world in Glorious Victory!

The Foretelling of the Birth of the Savior, The Emmanuel....~

Isaiah 9:6-7
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.  Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, Thou Rod of Jesse, free

From depths of Hell Thy people save

O come, Thou Day-Spring, come and cheer
Our spirits by Thine advent here
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night
And death's dark shadows put to flight.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, Thou Key of David, come,
And open wide our heavenly home;
Make safe the way that leads on high,
And close the path to misery.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, O come, Thou Lord of might,
Who to Thy tribes, on Sinai's height,

Reading 1
1 Sm 1:24-28

In those days,
Hannah brought Samuel with her,
along with a three-year-old bull,
an ephah of flour, and a skin of wine,
and presented him at the temple of the LORD in Shiloh.
After the boy’s father had sacrificed the young bull,
Hannah, his mother, approached Eli and said:
“Pardon, my lord!
As you live, my lord,
I am the woman who stood near you here, praying to the LORD.
I prayed for this child, and the LORD granted my request.
Now I, in turn, give him to the LORD;
as long as he lives, he shall be dedicated to the LORD.” She left Samuel there.

Responsorial Psalm
1 Samuel 2:1, 4-5, 6-7, 8abcd

R.        (see 1a)  My heart exults in the Lord, my Savior.
“My heart exults in the LORD,
my horn is exalted in my God.
I have swallowed up my enemies;
I rejoice in my victory.”
R.        My heart exults in the Lord, my Savior.
“The bows of the mighty are broken,
while the tottering gird on strength.
The well-fed hire themselves out for bread,
while the hungry batten on spoil.
The barren wife bears seven sons,
while the mother of many languishes.”
R.        My heart exults in the Lord, my Savior.
“The LORD puts to death and gives life;
he casts down to the nether world;
he raises up again.
The LORD makes poor and makes rich,
he humbles, he also exalts.”
R.        My heart exults in the Lord, my Savior.
“He raises the needy from the dust;
from the dung heap he lifts up the poor,
To seat them with nobles
and make a glorious throne their heritage.”
R.        My heart exults in the Lord, my Savior.

Gospel
Lk 1:46-56

Mary said:

“My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord;
my spirit rejoices in God my savior.
for he has looked upon his lowly servant.
From this day all generations will call me blessed:
the Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his Name.
He has mercy on those who fear him
in every generation.
He has shown the strength of his arm,
and has scattered the proud in their conceit.
He has cast down the mighty from their thrones
and has lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent away empty.
He has come to the help of his servant Israel
for he remembered his promise of mercy,
the promise he made to our fathers,
to Abraham and his children for ever.”

Mary remained with Elizabeth about three months

and then returned to her home.

Luke 1:26-38
In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin's name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, "Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you."

Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end."

"How will this be," Mary asked the angel, "since I am a virgin?"

The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be barren is in her sixth month. For nothing is impossible with God."

"I am the Lord's servant," Mary answered. "May it be to me as you have said." Then the angel left her.

Luke 2:1-14
In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to his own town to register.

So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger."

Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,
"Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests."

Bible Study / The Birth of Jesus Christ The Lord

Matthew 1:18-25
This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.

But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."

All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: "The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel"â€"which means, "God with us."

When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.

While you were studying yesterday, I went out to our spot by Eden Beach.
There I saw the sunset by myself.
As the wind blew on my face, as my ipod played "Lovestory" by Taylor Swift,
I began to cry.

Baby I cried. I sobbed, I teared up.
I did exactly the thing that I swore myself not to do.
I was 'sappy'.

Forgive me, though you did not see me, though you were not there, I was tearful yesterday.
Because I will miss you. I have not even left the campus and I am yet already missing you.

My precious beloved lady, whom I pray for every day, whom I think of when I am not studying,
whom my heart beats for, whom my tears are shed for, whom my lips have touched in every angle, every measure that pleasure and passion has vindicated in its total majestic spleandor.
My heart is in longing of you, distance shall be our greatest impediment, yet our greatest stimulator, for you see, I do believe in the saying, "Distance makes the heart go fonder."

You are so beautiful, my darling.
More than words can describe,
To my eyes, to my nose, to my lips, to my mouth...you are all that I ever wanted and searched for in a woman.

My Love is Yours.

Eternally,

Dear___________

I cried yesterday, thinking that I will not see you in a while.
As I will part to review for the boards and start clinical rotations,
you will still be in the main campus away from me.

I cried because I will miss seeing your face everyday,
you could say it is a form of separation anxiety. (ha ha ha).
So used to receiving your calls and your text messages,
so used to going shopping with you, you buying food material that I like,
so used to having home-made breakfast made by you..for me.
So used to receiving bear kisses and snuggle breaks with you.
I want you to know that the promise band that you put on me..I will not take off.

I also want you to know that I think about you. Everyday.
Even for just a moment. I do think of you.

Good luck on your final exams today.

Woman,

I cannot help but think about you today. Thank you so much for attending my white coat ceremony and being there with me and for me. You took time from your own exam reviews to be with me. Baby,, I love you.
I love you, you and no other. For no one can compare to you. No one. My lips are yours. My heart is yours. My body is yours~~ all that I am, all that I will become, all my weaknesses, my strengths, my heart and soul...is yours.

I give it to you, freely. I give it to you totally.
No inhibitions. No more.

I can see myself growing old with you, darling. With you...and no other.

Darling...I will wait. For you are worth the wait.
Darling...I shall pray for us. For we are worth the prayer.
Darling, my sweetest and babyest darling of all darlings~~ I love you.
I love you more than the sun, I love you more than the rain that waters the earth.
I love you more than my letters etched in black ink.

I love you~ all that is you. You entirely. You completely. Your flaws, I love. Your strengths, I love.
All that you have the potential to become..I Love.
You and no other.

My kids love her.

This is not known to many Americans, but the medical system in the United States is teeter-tottering, you know. We have a massive patient base over over 305 Million Americans, and very few doctors that are graduating medical school, which has been a trend in the last decade. The Medical System is overstretched. That is why the USMLE and the ECFMG Medical Licensing Boards are allowing more importation of foreign-trained Doctors into the country to fill in the ranks and the spots that are not filled.

The trend in medicine nowadays, especially amongst American Medical Students is going into specialty training. Most American Medical Students/ Doctors go into specialty areas such as: Surgery (General, Reconstructive, Bariatric, Orthopaedic, Pediatric), Anaesthesiology, Dermatology, Gastroenterology, Nephrology, Radiology, ENT, Pulmonology, Neurology etc etc. And as a result of this, the primary care spots are left open. Primary care spots include: Pediatrics, Family Practice, Internal Medicine, Pyschiatry, Cardiology, ER, Critical Care Medicine etc.

So, as a result, most foreign doctors that patriate into the United States end up getting primary care residencies. Many of them are sent to the rural regions of the United States~~ North Dakota, South Dakota, Tennessee, Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, Indiana, Colorado, Montana, etc etc. Because most American Grads are getting residencies in the highly competitive regions such as the urban areas (NYC, LA, PHILLY, BOSTON, DETROIT, HOUSTON etc etc). As it stands tho, the United States imports about 10,000 Foreign Doctors every year because of the medical situation. We simply don't have enough doctors. Not enough. That is why the role of nurses has increased in order to supplement the limited doctors graduating medicine in the united states every year. That is why we have NP (nurse practitioners), PA (physicians assistants), CRNAs (certified registered nurse anesthetists) in order to complement and augment the medical system.

In defense of the foreign doctors tho, I do hold alot of them with high regard and respect because in order for them to come to the 'states, they not only have to pass the national boards in their country, but have to pass the stringent USMLE (united states medical licensing exams and the national boards) as well as pass the ECFMG boards to even be qualified. And after that, then are sent to do residency training in the united states. So the new ones are highly qualified. Depends on person to person tho, we all know that.

For me, I know alot of Filipino Doctors that are practicing in the hospital where I rotated and in the hospitals that my parents work in. Graduates of prestigious school such as UPCM (University of Philippines College of Medicine) and UECM (University of the East College of Medicine) and the well known USTSOM (University of Santo Tomas School of Medicine). These guys, in my opinion, are damn fine physicians.

They are precise in their surgical procedures and techniques, and are always in time. I have seen a Dr. Villalobos, who is a Gastroenterologist in the hospital that i did my preceptorship in a couple of years ago...he was a graduate of UST, and was training American medical students, one of whom was already a 4th year resident and still making mistakes. Dr. VIllalobos embarassed him for his lack of skills in the diagnosis, he said, "You rotated with me for the pas 4 years and you still cannot perform a decent cholonoscopy? I will not sign your papers at all!" Strikto kaayo ning PILIPINONG DOCTOR.

IMHO, Philippine Medical Schools train better than American schools. Because by the time the filipino medical students start rotation, they already known surgical measures; and are already engrossed in clinical experience starting their 2nd year. In the United States, we do not start till our 3rd year, aside from hospital volunteering.

Highly respected and Highly educated ning Filipino when it comes to Medicine or Nursing.
We dominate the medical work force in the United States.

I don't think my parents know about her,  yet, but I want you all to know that this woman has been the inpiratory engine that drove my 2nd year. When I was stressed out, she would comfort me...through her voice and her soft kisses. When we both were stressed and studying, her eyes would make me melt and her voice and the warmth of her presence drove me to persevere all the more. She is my inspiration.

She was there with me during my White Coat Ceremony. Taking my pictures and wiping the sweat that was on my face...and rubbing my back when I was crying during the event.

Proud ko jamo sa mga Filipinos sa medical field. Ang mga Pinoy nurses ug Pinoy doctors, ug Pinoy Physical Therapists, Pinoy pharamcists, pinoy Occupational therapists, etc etc.

I did now know how many Filipino doctors there are in the USA until my friend Shalab told me that there are over 25,000 Filipino Doctors that are practicing in the USA. There are over 40,000 Indian docs that are practicign in the USA.

The 2 largest minorities that make up medicine in the USA are indeed, Filipinos and Indians, respectively.

I started medicine with my doubts on some Indians because of their strict demeanor, but after 2 years studying with them, and all other Desi-Americans (desi = south asians); I have come to love and respect them.
Very similar kaayo ang demeanor sa mga Indian sa Filipino. Ang Indian they are very good at following orders and answering questions to the immediate point. The Filipino is the quiet one; the one that usually is the silent leader, and the one that is good at correcting the answer and re-checking the supposed answer to be false.

In my batch there are 10 Filipinos. All of us hail from different regions of the Philippines. Bohol (me), Cagayon De Oro, Davao, Iloilo, Cebu, Leyte, Luzon.

An overwhelming majority of the Filipinos are Visayans. 8 of us are Visayans, and 2 are from Luzon.

Interesting, no?

Wow na Wow!! Father Roel, you are so handsome! I heard your singing that was posted in facebook, Father! I heard it after I attended my white coat ceremony, and I was brought to tears jyud, Father!

You know Father, I take this as a message from GOD THE FATHER that he sent to me my way. And it brought tears of overbounding joy to my eyes.

You see, Father, for a while, I was in turmoil with myself because I knew that I had been called to be a priest. I have struggled with this calling since I was in my 1st year of college. Father it was so strong that I attended many catholic retreats to discern the calling~ my good friend Fr. Mark Hoffman has been there for me to listen to my concerns and my thoughts and my words. God Bless him. And God Bless all of you priests that have answered HIS CALLING...HIS DIVINE CALLING...because, Father, the role of priest SURPASSES all professions.

You see, I may have chosen a lesser calling...that of a physician. While the physician doctors the body and heals the body of man, it is the PRIEST of GOD that doctors the soul through the ministry of HIS DIVINE WORD. Through the ministry and adminstration of the HOLY EUCHARIST, the LIVING PRESENCE, THE HOLY PRESENCE....

I pray and sing to the Lord,...that his callings are answered by more beautiful, handsome, well-versed, humble, jovial,  good and kind-hearted men such as yourself. May we have more sheppards like you! More and More!

I pray Father that you are granted continued good health, a beautiful life, stable mind, and continued compassionate soul for those who listen to you as you minister the WORD OF GOD. Which brings life and overbounding graces to thsoe who listen to HIS DIVINE WORD.

Pops, please also pray for me. Pray for me and my batch.

Happy Christmas Season Father!
Perhaps I can visit you someday...BY HIS GRACE.....

Know that you are loved, and cared for by many, many people that you have touched through your ministry, through your wonderful songs, your happy and fatherly-like voice, and genuine kindness.....~

GOD BLESS YOU, FATHER ROEL!
GOD BLESS YOU FROM THE CROWN OF  YOUR HEAD TO THE SOLES OF YOUR FEET.
MAY YOU BE BLESSED ALL THE DAYS OF YOUR LIFE.
AND MY CHRIST'S LOVE CONTINUE TO BURN IN YOUR HEART AND MIND.
FOR HIS WORD IS...SALVATION...ON HIGH...

AMEN.

With this, I end this tribute to my medical batch with a simple quote that was given to me by my Love of My Life.

"How Far you go in life depends on your being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving and tolerant of the weak and strong. Because someday in your life, you will have been all of these."

--George Washington Carver

And May God Bless Our Hands so that we may cure and do good more than bad, May God bless our minds that we are reminded to discern to evade overmedicating the patient as well as evade therapeutic nihilism. May God Bless our hearts so that we may be compassionate to the patient and not see him as a tumor, a growth, a cancer, a bacterial infection, but an individual with family and feelings. May God Bless our eyes so that we may see what the true problem is in regards to the treatment of an illness. May God Bless our souls so that we remember not to play at God and to remember our own frailties and to seek advice when we know not the answer to a question or a problem. May we be followers of the science that we are part of, to respect and uphold the honor of those physicians whose footsteps we follow, and to tred our own marks for those who are to follow after us.

And most of all, may we be worthy to be like the Divine Physician Himself, who is Christ Jesus.
Who knows no disease and frailty that was uncurable, and who conquered death itself~~the very primordial foe of the Physician.

God Bless Us.
Our Hearts, Our Minds, Our Bodies.
May we Save more.

She said, "In the hospital floor, the Filipinos dominate the ER, ICU, CCU, MEDSURG, PACU; and now in medical school..i see that you guys are also dominating too!"

Curious lang ko:

Can we address you guys as Dr's. like the labels on the pictures above even if you are yet students?

When i only knew about a Dr ( sa encarta) who are:

-somebody medically qualified: somebody qualified and licensed to give people medical treatment
-somebody who is good at doing something, especially fixing or improving something
-somebody with the highest university degree: a title given to somebody who has been awarded a doctorate, the highest level of degree awarded by a university
-Roman Catholic theologian: in the earlier history of the Roman Catholic Church, an eminent and influential theologian
-a teacher, or somebody very knowledgeable

I know you all are good students but im not so sure if it is yet the right time to call you Docs when you are yet in your second year? Im just curious dont take it personally. Kay sa ako sad mabaw-an man gud nga you dont declare or even call  yourself a doc or a priest or teacher or whatever profession unless yuo have the proof that one is license to that degree.

This is a friendly term that we call each other, 'te. Since we completed our 6th year of formal schooling from 4 years of college and finishing our 2nd year of medicine. 6 years over all. And another 2 more years to go, hehe.

We call each other 'Doctor' all the time as a term of endearment and motivation for those who are really good in what they do. The group that I am part of, are known in the hospital floor for our ambitious drive and dedication especially when we rotated in the General Surgery Ward, because all of us were there for 10 hours. and more.

The nursing staff, who we respect highly, started calling each of us as 'Doctors'.

One nurse, who is a friend of mine who came to our white coat, named Ms. Marliz called us, "the bright and handsome future bosses." hahahaha!

We have bled and sweated together that is why we call each other and motivate each other.

To my brothers in arms:

Joyson, Gary, Thiru, Shalab, Korosh, John, David, Bruce, Job, Vince,~~ I LOVE you guys.
See you guys in rotations.

Salamat Mr. Felix Daray, may our God of Love and Peace continue to bless and guide all our hearts and minds to accomplish all the things that we set out to do. For all is possible through HIS GRACE..~

The first 2 years are conquered, now we begin our 3rd year of medicine as medical interns in the hospital. This is where we begin to branch out and find our specialty of liking (General Surgery, Pathology, OB-GYN, Emergency Medicine, Pulmonology, Internal Medicine, Neurology, Psychiatry, etc etc).

As I look back into the years from the beginning to the present~ what a ride and what a challenge it was.
The mountain that was basic sciences of medicine.

I am witness to the saying; indeed, if you have faith even as small as a mustard seed and tell the mountain to move, for sure, the mountain will move. For we can do all things through Jesus Christ who strengthens us.

Thanks for the blessings sir. May my batch mates and I be the head not the tail. And may we be blessed from the crown of the head to the soles of the feet. Blessed in the city and Blessed in the country. And to wherever we go.

In Jesus' Name.
Amen.

HATE

Well, if you’re happy then I’m blue
‘Cause I’m not so far, but not with you
And I can’t see, why we cant see each other
I telephone but you’re sleeping forever

I hate you for the things you do but I love you
And curse you for your beauty,
that makes me make some poetry ‘bout love
And I don’t think you even think about me
If only you were smiling, and if I was your reason
Tomorrow, I could die

I can only pray my absence will change you
Pretend that you’re the one who needs my love
But you celebrate, ‘coz yes why should you miss me?
When you know darn well I’d die, just to bring us together

And this is not a love song, don’t even think its your song

This is a pretty deep song...the passionate interest of a former lover and to the object of his/her affection.

Father, We ask in jesus name that this student be not distracted in any shape or form during the lecture, ask that this student pass every test that is presented with a high score, father god we stand on your word that no weapon formed against this student shall prosper and every lying tongue that rises up against this student is condemned in jesus name, father we speak in jesus name, that this student is the head and not the tail, blessed coming in and blessed going out, blessed in the city and blessed in the country , that every where the soles of his or her feet threads upon is his or her. We speak love , power and a sound mind. In jesus name. We speak strength, power , endurance in jesus name . Father, We ask that this student's hearing and understanding be not blocked but opened to hear everything clearly that is being presented in class. We ask for overflow of favor with the professor, students and others and we ask that if this student is need of more information concerning his or her studies be found on the internet , library or wherever that will make it easy for him or her in jesus name.

Bible Study / A Medical Student's Prayer for Consolation
December 17, 2009, 12:37:50 AM
Prayer for wisdom and knowledge!

I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him. That the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power. Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places. Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: and hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him that filleth all in all.

Amen.

Lord, Lord, Lord, Lord!

Lord I am in total awe and contemplation today.
It is 3:54 pm.
1 hour before I must leave to attend my white coat ceremony.

LORD! ETERNAL GOD OF GLORY, WHO IS SEATED ABOVE THE HEAVENS, WHO LOOKS DOWN UPON CREATION,

Lord, Your Glory and Spleandor stretches from eternity to eternity. From Alpha to Omega.

Lord, I am happy today for your blessings that you have bestowed upon me.
Thank you for these blessings, Lord.

I give all my successes and my happiness to you, LORD.
I give you back the Glory, the Honor and the Praise.
For you ALONE are worthy of it.

One thing I noticed about Illongo speakers is that they end a sentence with the airy 'Ha'

LOL!

I always laugh when baji says, "Gyid"

So now we are exchanging phrases.

I am now saying 'Gyid' and she says 'Gyud'.
Though I have taught her the Bol-anon form, "Jyud"

Slowly tho, I am making her more fluent in Sugbuanon-Bol-anon.

Poems and Poets / I Want To Grow Old With You
December 15, 2009, 07:28:52 PM
For the longest time, my sweet, I have rejected the advances of lovers
I have maintained the life of a single man, for years
For the longest time, my lips were unkissed,
My heart left cold and in moderate beat in the humdrums of daily life
My mind set only in the goal of studies and the acquisition of nothing but grades
Aside from the love of family, I knew not love for a woman in passion.
I admit that to you and to the world who reads my dedication for you.

I am who I am, a man with many faults, a man.
I am a man who yearns for the blessings of love and continues to love
I am a man who continues to adore you, despite the fact that we have our differences,
I am willing and totally honest that I will break my own lists of pros and cons, my own preferences that I thought I went by
so that I may be able to increase my love for you. As you have for me.

Can this be so that in the 24th year of my life, on the 2nd year of my medical career, that I would be truly in Love?
It seems like it went so fast, passion so high, yet i know that it is truly genuine.
Because, my blessed love, I know that you are truly the best thing to have happen to me.
The best thing to have come to my heart~ to make me smile, make me laugh, make me poetic, make me cry, make me abound in joy. Oh the Lord is so Good.

My love, I love you more than words can ever come to describing through its distant familiarities in adjectives, proverbs, adverbs, nouns and pronouns. Predicates cannot even come close.

My love, I love you more than the sun that shines light to my face on morning,
I love you more than the rains that fall to the ground that waters the dry parched earth.
I love you more than the winds that softly and eloquently caresses my face on a cool winter's breeze.
I love you more than the letters that I have written to you,
More than the many times I have cried in tearful happiness in my realizations concerning you.

I love you so much that I am brought to writing letters, poems and dedications for you, in this forum.
Without you even knowing it. :)

My love, may I grow old with you?
If that is okay with you..~~

Usahay, nagadamgo ako
Nga ikaw ug ako nagkahigumaan
Nganong damguhon ko ikaw
Damguhon ko kanunay sa akong kamingaw

Usahay, nagamahay ako
Nganong nabuhi pa

Pasayawa ko inday
Sayaw lang sa uban

Nganong ako nga ana may uban
Pagaksa nalang ko day
Di ko lagi kay wa koy gusto

Irog irog, unsay irog, sibog sibog

Pastilan nimo inday, pagkawala moy kalooy
Oy ang gugma undo, dimadalag looy looy

Pahaluka nalang kug dyutay, unsay halok oy unsay dyutay
Irog irog, unsay irog, sibog sibog

Pahaluka ko day, asa man? sa imong aping
Nganom man? ako ay molakaw, asa man?

Maayo pa undo palayo nalang kanako, ngano man?

Ayaw diha ug tinunto undo ngano ba ug dili dili ko mamenyo
Madubok ikaw, bisan, sigi na lagi, dili
Wa nay mupunit, ngano bag way molingi
Kay ang gugma ko dili kabayran ug lima lang ka pesos
Aron lang magum-os.
Tingali unya ikaw magbasol

Poems and Poets / Aspects of Character
December 15, 2009, 07:24:11 AM
By: A. Lorenzo

Your eyes speak with words that ears cannot hear,
Your body moves beyond the tangents of windy undulations
Your smile can ignite the fire within the soul of this man
Your lips, as soft as the cheeks of a new-born babe,
Your voice, which soothes this man's being, is beyond any recording, reiteration.

Stern, yet justified.
Conservative, yet understanding
Formal yet fashionable
Humble yet exquisitely sophisticated
Liberated yet Traditional
American yet Filipina
Beautiful yet silent.

All of these are aspects of your character that I come to love.
Appreciate.
Adore.

You who are the fount of living water,
You who created creation from the very will of your command,
that you would have compassion on me, a pitiful sinner, who is unworthy of your Love.
I am honored and humbled, Lord.

For sure, I know that it was you who provided me the strength to overcome the difficulties of studies,
the emotionality that the constancy of studies can have, and the deliberation of my goals.

I stand in confidence by the Light of your Grace and Goodness, because it is said of us,
"Ask and it shall be given, knock and the door shall be opened unto, seek and you shall find."

I agree with this, My Lord, for anything is possible for My Lord My God.
And I can do all things through HIM who Strengthens me.
I can do all things and anything through Jesus Christ who Strengthens me.

Christ Now, Christ Tomorrow, Christ Forever.

The victory you have given me, I sacrifice it and give it back to YOU!
It is YOURS!
YOURS ALONE.
For you are worthy of all Honor, Glory, Praise.
Amen.

I can do all things through Jesus Christ who strengthens me. ~

John 15:4-6 Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. 5 "I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.

Philippians 4:6-7 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Philippine History / Re: My Medical White Coat Ceremony

I would like to make a simple dedication.

I dedicate this simple victory that has been bestowed upon me to my family.
First, I would like to remember the sacrifices of my grandfather, Mr. Rustico Aray Lucino Sr, who was a businessman and who came from the island of Pintuyan, Southern Leyte. He left Pintuyan on banka when he was only 8 years old and only with a 4th grade education. Yet was able to work, through the grace of God and his own intuition and business skills~ sending all 7 of his children to College; and all of them finishing nursing school, engineering and medical school. Let this be a testament that the economic depravity of one's humble beginnings is not a limitation for success~  but the inspiratory engine to drive success!

I would also like to contribute and dedicate this victory in the memory of my grandmother, Mrs. Maria Luz Lucino, who was an educator in life. She was a teacher, a mother, a grandmother, and a loving wife. That her memory continues to live on in the minds and hearts and blood of her children, her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren.
I love you, Mama Luz.

I would also like to dedicate this to my grandmother, Mrs. Fortunata Tan Salvo and my grandfather, Mr. Casiano Salise Salvo Sr. Both of whom come from Valencia, Bohol. That their sacrifices to send their children to college~ all of whom graduated and are successful professionals in engineering and nursing. That their sacrifices are not forgotten, but are driving motivations for their grandchildren and great grandchildren.

I would also give this victory to my parents;

To my father, Engr. Albrando Rico Lucino Sr, and to my mother, Mrs. Liza Salvo Lucino.
For encouraging me throughout high school to aim for the best, and nothing but the best. For encouraging me and providing for me in college that the realization of one's dream is possible--so long as one puts his mind into it and begs and prays for Divine Providence' mercy and guidance~~that what one puts his or her mind to..shall be made so.

My parents ushered a beautiful biblical verse to me when i was in the hardest year of my undergraduate career~, a verse from Matthew 17:20,
“Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.”

I would also like to give thanks to my Uncle Stephen Hinkley and my aunt, Mrs. Maria Lebeth Lucino-Hinkley for always being there for me. I could not be here without your continued support and words of encouragement.

To my baby siblings, my cousins and my relatives and friends, thank you. Thank you for believing in me and praying for me. Thanks be to God for these blessings.

All GLORY, HONOR, and PRAISE belongs to the LORD GOD.

In Jesus' Name.
AMEN.

Dear Tubag Bohol,

As you know, when I am not posting on the side here in Tubag Bohol Web Forum, I am engrossed in 2nd year medicine.
With great distinction and honor I would like to share with all of you that my medical batch and I will receive our Medical White Coats on December 15, 2009. (Tomorrow).

The event will take place in District Plaza @ 5PM. The SJSMl College of Medicine Class of 2012 celebrates our completion of 2nd year medicine. The White Coat Ceremony signifies our transition from medical school proper to medical internship.

I know that most of you are abroad; in the Philippines, in Europe, Australia, Canada  and the Middle East, however, I would like to invite all of you in spirit to be there with me when I receive my white coat.

In all things, I would like to give thanks to God for this Victory.

With Final Examinations over, and our marks posted, I am very happy.
Truly: All Glory, Honor and Praise be to God.

Please keep us in your prayers and thoughts.
