Yes, you're right, Tita. Facebook is overrated.

though i don't know much about how facebook operates, i was never convinced to have an account there.

it took me 2 years of just reading tb before i decided to join.  i couldn't read anything in facebook, so i have no basis for knowing whether the site is worth joining or not.  besides, the name facebook strikes me as nothing but an inverted bookface, which sounds more familiar.

i know of a successful banker in cebu who opted to become a priest in his mid-30s.  he's now one of the most dedicated priests in the archdiocese.

a very successful (read: rich) businessman also opted, though his path was more circuitous.  i can imagine the internal storms he went through.

at a time when mobile phones were not so common, he already had one, which he had to give up when he entered the seminary.  i could give up everything i have but my mobile phone, he had complained.  but he gave it up anyway.

well, he had a girlfriend who he didn't give up like his mobile phone.  one day he set aside his planned vocation and married her.  the union didn't last.  after 2 children, 2 residential houses, and a good number of cars, he again gave up everything, including his wife (through annulment), and went back to the seminary.  i understand he's now a priest of a certain order, though i haven't heard of him since.

i like both the bee gees and michael bolton's versions.  the latter, as posted here, may be slower (or is it because renditions of songs during live shows do tend to be slower?), but it has more pathos.  this has set me on a quest (aherm) to have the versions of rod stewart and bonnie tyler too.

One of the most famous Gibb compositions, "To Love Somebody" was covered by hundreds of artists (as diverse as Leonard Cohen, Roberta Flack, Lulu, Tom Jones, Janis Joplin, Dusty Springfield, Rod Stewart, Bonnie Tyler, and many others), according to wikipedia.

this includes Michael Bolton's version in 1992.

i didn't know michael bolton from adam, honest.  so i did a little research because i've always known 'to love somebody' as a bee gees song.  an interesting tidbit:

At the request of the band's manager, Robert Stigwood, Barry and Robin Gibb wrote "To Love Somebody," a soulful ballad in the style of Sam & Dave or The Rascals, for Otis Redding, but Redding died in an aeroplane crash before having a chance to record the song. The Bee Gees recorded "To Love Somebody" at IBC Studios, London in March 1967 and released it as a single in mid-July 1967 in the US. (wikipedia)

Although first demonstrated at the 1952 Olympic Games, synchronized swimming did not become an official Olympic sport until the 1984 Summer Olympic Games.  It was not until 1968 that synchronized swimming became officially recognized by Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA) as the fourth water sport next to swimming, platform diving and water polo. Synchronized swimming (often abbreviated to Synchro) is a hybrid form of swimming, dance and gymnastics, consisting of swimmers (either solos, duets, trios, or teams) performing a synchronized routine of elaborate moves in the water, accompanied by music. (wikipedia)

Synchronized swimming was known as water ballet at the turn of the 20th century.

meanwhile, 3 of the world's deadliest earthquakes in recorded history were in china.  it looks like tall buildings and earthquakes may not see eye to eye.  ::)

world's top 10 deadliest earthquakes in history (they're mostly in asia!):

10. Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, 1948 (110,000 fatalities)
9. Hokkaido, Japan, 1730 (137,000 fatalities)
8. Kanto, Japan, 1923 (142,000 fatalities; 38,000 burned with a fire tornado)
7. Ardabil, Iran 893, (150,000 fatalities)
6. Haiyuan, China, 1920 (200,000 fatalities)
5. Damghan, Iran, 856 (200,000 fatalities)
4. Aleppo, Syria, 1138 (23,000 fatalities)
3. Tansghan, China, 1976 (655,000 fatalities)
2. Indian Ocean, 2004 (227,898 fatalities)
1. Shaanxi, China, 1556 (820,000 fatalities)

(manila happens to be number 5 in the current list of most earthquake prone cities in the world.  i doubt if it's reassuring that we don't own one of the world's tallest buildings.)

some obvious facts about the world's tallest buildings:

5 out of 10 are in china (including taiwan).

8 out of 10 are in asia (including 1 in southeast asia and 2 in the middle east).

only 2 are in the western hemisphere, both in the US.

there's none from europe.  understandably so, as it's one continent, especially continental europe, that abhors tall buildings and would avoid having one if it can be helped.

If you do this: Income-Tithes-Savings = Expenses
then, you can totally save.. =)

For Whom The Bell Tolls

No man is an island,
Entire of itself.
Each is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manor of thine own
Or of thine friend's were.
Each man's death diminishes me,
For I am involved in mankind.
Therefore, send not to know
For whom the bell tolls,
It tolls for thee.

after reading various on-again, off-again, pros and cons of monosodium glutamate (msg) all these years, the only conclusion i could make is the safest one: anything in excess is not good.

apples are great for one's health; they keep the likes of doctor lorenz away, right?  try devouring a good number and chances are you'll end up with a face pinched by constipation.  we know what too much sugar means, and salt, and carrots, and alcoholic drinks, and whatever else.  moderation is the way to go, in everything in fact, including love and, yes, water intake.  there's such a thing as water poisoning.

i use msg in cooking, specially for bland recipes like fish 'tinola'.  just a pinch of msg mixed with a pinch of sugar does wonders to the flavor.  so far, by the grace of god, i still can think straight.  sometimes, anyway. ;D

Here's the thing about miracles: They only truly belong to the people who experienced them, who witnessed and perceived them with their own senses.

Everyone else either accepts the miracle on faith or as a compelling possibility. Or not at all.

It would appear as though I got the miracle I had wished for, though I could not begin to tell you how. For me it's a tangle of the intangible, the inexplicable and the mysterious.

And I'm perfectly comfortable with that.

so am i perfectly comfortable with the idea of miracles.  science can only do so much.  i don't really need an explanation for everything.  great article.  thanks, lorenz.

Love Talk / Re: Men Vs. Women Redux

hahaha!  everything here is quotable.  my favorites:

OFFSPRING

-A woman knows all about her children.  She knows about dentist appointments and romances, best friends, favorite foods, secret fears and hopes and dreams.

-A man is vaguely aware of some short people living in the house.

THOUGHT OF THE DAY

A married man should forget his mistakes.  There's no use in two people remembering the same thing.

touché! ;D

as for the privilege of a housekeeper/cook, like you i'm lucky too.  ours had been with us for 27 years and counting, gikan sa single pa ko.  she's not with us now as she takes charge of our cats and dogs because she can talk to them.  meanwhile, i can housekeep and cook myself, with time for tb to boot.  i thank god for all this.  :)

hinoon, mailad sad ko usahay.  diha koy gisigeg hatag last year, mora kog gasuweldo ug tawo kay regular akong paghatag.  niwang kaayo siya nga nagpuyo ra sa sidewalk, pero por santo, alcoholic man diay.  gitagaan pa nakog thermos aron naa siyay kape, maintan ang tiyan.  arrange pa ko with 7-eleven convenience store nga tagaan siyag ininit nga tubig kada buntag.  siok tong man diay ang iyang isulod sa thermos, sagolan ug cola, morag kape sa akong tinan-awan.  ang akong hinatag ipalit ug siok tong?  no way.  i dropped him.  but i digress.  this is another story...
