As for Manny Backus, I’m surprised that Money Magazine would stoop as low as Sirius or XM Radio and run his ridiculous advertisement. And I’m disappointed that Money’s editors would compromise their standards for advertising revenues. The truth is that nobody “makes money in the first 59 minutes of every trading day.”

Manny’s “First Hour Trading” thing is a sweet scam. He doesn’t promise enormous profits of hundreds of thousands of dollars or wide-eyed returns of 1,600 percent from two or three stocks. Manny’s claim appears reasonable, credible and tenable; you can make $500 every trading day just by following his advice, which’ll cost you $300 a month.

If you believe this, then I have a split-level stilt house in a wadi with riparian rights at a bargain price just for you. Or I know a guy who wants to sell an original reproduction of an un-retouched goldmine map sketched by an old Dutchman who got lost wandering the Superstition Mountains in the 1870s.

Please address your financial questions to Malcolm Berko, P.O. Box 8303, Largo, FL 33775, or e-mail him at mjberko@yahoo.com.

Dear BD:

There are about 246 different languages spoken in China â€" they range from Achang to Zhuang â€" and perhaps as many dialects spoken by 1.4 million Chinese, many of whom make jet planes, computers, building products, automobiles, medical equipment, TVs, heating systems, machinery, trucks, paper, clothing, furniture, toys, chemicals, food products, etc., for export. There are some 3,300 public corporations in China ranging in name from ABA Chemicals to Zuoan Fashions; that’s about 13 corporations for each spoken language, dialects not included.

I looked at 42 Chinese corporations trading in the U.S., and each is rated as a “buy” by U.S. analysts. There seems to be an overwhelming belief that China cannot fail, even though the Shanghai Composite Index has been off 16 percent in the last 12 months and the Hang Seng Index has fallen 24 percent in the same time frame.

And with so many languages spoken, it’s difficult to form a knowledgeable opinion about what’s really happening on the inscrutable mainland. Most readers know that I very much prefer to read annual reports and peruse balance sheets and income statements in my native tongue and to collect dividends in dollars rather than yuan, pesos or francs. Most Chinese companies are Greek to me, and I’m told by professionals whom I respect that many Asian analysts are forcefully pressured to produce positive reports on companies they cover.

So I think you should sell every Chinese company you own. Do it now, and don’t wait, because when the Great Economic Wall of China cracks, your nest egg will become chop suey.

In 2011, China’s real GDP grew at 15.6 percent, and Chinese stocks reflect this impressive number. If one includes the appreciation of the yuan, however, China’s GDP grew at a single-digit 8.9 percent. It’s still an impressive number, but sure as shootin’ and certain as sin, China’s sales to Europe and the U.S. accounted for 39 percent of its exports in 2011. The recession in the U.S. and Europe has reduced demand, and falling exports may reduce China’s GDP growth to 5.2 percent in 2012. But most Chinese stocks currently trade at multiples that can be justified only by a 15.6 percent GDP.

I don’t trust Chinese analysts, I don’t trust the Chinese business model, I don’t trust Chinese accounting, I don’t trust China’s banks, and I don’t trust the Chinese corporate culture. But I do trust my instincts, and they say, “Sell.”

If you insist on Chinese exposure, buy a Chinese restaurant in Indianapolis. Many restaurants go out of business in a bad economy, but Chinese restaurants have staying power. Have you ever seen a “closed” or “out of business” sign on a Chinese restaurant door or window or even on a Chinese laundry? Their food costs are low, labor is primarily supplied by the family that own the business property, and their employees don’t join unions.

There are so many good U.S. stocks. Why must you invest overseas?

Keep your money in U.S. markets â€" and away from Manny Backus
By Malcolm Berko December 30, 2011 10:18AM
Updated: January 8, 2012 9:50PM

Dear Mr. Berko: I have $64,000 invested in Chinese stocks, and I’m ahead by $6,000. What do you think of the Chinese market today for the next three years? Are there any Chinese stocks you would recommend?

Also, what do you think of Manny Backus, who has a program called First Hour Trading advertised in Money Magazine? Backus claims he can show us how to make $500 in the first 59 minutes of every trading day. Do you know Mr. Backus? Would you recommend his trading program?

A highly sensitive person (HSP) is a person having the innate trait of high psychological sensitivity (or innate sensitiveness as Carl Jung originally coined it). According to Elaine N. Aron and colleagues as well as other researchers, highly sensitive people, who comprise about a fifth of the population, may process sensory data much more deeply and thoroughly due to a biological difference in their nervous systems.

This is a specific trait with key consequences that in the past has often been confused with innate shyness, social anxiety problems, inhibitedness, or even social phobia and innate fearfulness, introversion, and so on. The existence of the trait of innate sensitivity was demonstrated using a test that was shown to have both internal and external validity. Although the term is primarily used to describe humans, the trait is present in nearly all higher animals. --Wiki

How to Handle Criticism

We now know that not all criticism is the same. The key is to be aware of what type of criticism you are receiving and then act accordingly. The following are some strategies that I find to be effective:

Don’t take it personally. As I mentioned earlier, sometimes criticism has very little to do with you and a lot to do with the other person’s own insecurities, anger or unique way of seeing the world. If someone makes a nasty personal attack on you, there is a good chance that it is actually them that has the problem. At the other end of the spectrum, if someone criticizes you in a constructive manner don’t let your own pride get in the way of hearing what they have to say.

Learn. Sometimes there is good reason for people to be critical of what we say or do. So if you are criticized for whatever reason, try to be open-minded about it. Perhaps even welcome it by expressing gratitude to your critic. It may not be nice to hear criticism, but such feedback is often a part of the learning process and can provide us with valuable insights into how we can improve and grow as a person.

Toughen up. As I said before, I don’t necessarily think it is bad to be sensitive. But if criticism regularly hijacks your thoughts, it could be time to toughen up and grow a thicker skin. In my opinion, the best way to do this is with an inside-out approach. By this I mean don’t just pretend to be tougher. Instead, take the time to work on your self-esteem so that you hold greater confidence in your abilities and ideas.

Be assertive. If you feel that the criticism you receive is unjustified, I suggest you respond courteously, but assertively. This may be difficult, particularly if the other person is your senior. But it is generally not a good idea to “bottle up” your feelings as this is what can leave you dwelling on criticism for hours or even days.

Do it anyway. Perhaps the most important point in this article is: don’t change the way you act or the things you say simply to avoid criticism. Remember, criticism is usually inevitable. And it may just be an indication that you have taken a risk and chosen to tackle something which is a challenge to you. -- http://www.pickthebrain.com/

Understanding Criticism

To effectively deal with criticism, it is important to first understand that there are different types of, and reasons for, critical comments.

It is not always about you. The truth is, there are some angry, jealous and insecure people in the world who are critical because… well…. that’s just the way they are. That’s not to say that sometimes they are not critical for good reasons, but other times it is just a case of you being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

It is inevitable. Recently I read how Drew Barrymore was criticized by some people after donating $1,000,000 to charity. To me, this just shows that when it comes to how we act or what we say often we are caught in a Catch 22. That is, we are damned if we do and damned if we don’t.

It may be justified. We each have our imperfections, and this means that sometimes we do something wrong or say something stupid. When this happens, any criticism we receive may be well justified.

Has this ever happened to you?

You’re happily going about your day when, out of nowhere, someone criticizes something you say or do. Suddenly you lose focus and can’t stop thinking about what they said or wrote. You know you shouldn’t be bothered, but knowing doesn’t help you stop thinking about it over and over and over.

In the past I have spent hours, days even, thinking about even the smallest of critical comments. It still happens to me every so often, but for the most part I have learned how to effectively handle it. I guess you could say I am a sensitive person, and truth be told I don’t think there is anything wrong with this for the most part. However, being sensitive to criticism is a major problem if it causes you to lose focus on important tasks or makes you stop acting in a certain manner due to fear of being criticized.

Since putting myself “out there”, in particular with my blogging, I have had to implement a number of strategies for dealing with criticism. And for the most part these strategies have worked well. That is not to say I don’t still feel the sting of criticism, but for the most part I don’t let it hijack my thoughts or stop me from acting in my normal manner.

Dealing with extreme sensitivity to criticism

There is only one way to get rid of your extreme sensitivity to criticism which is to heal your wounds completely.

Stop running from your fears and write down the wounds that are making you sensitive to criticism. As soon as you sort them out write an ambitious plan that helps you heal all of those wounds one by one.

If you started working on your plan with some dedication you will discover that your extreme sensitivity to criticism is becoming lower. As you progress through the plan this sensitivity will keep going lower and lower until it will disappear completely. -- http://www.2knowmyself.com/
#33639
Understanding extreme sensitivity to criticism

In my previous article dealing with criticism i said that criticism only hurts when it touches an already existing wound.

We become extremely sensitive to criticism when we already have a certain wound that we remember whenever someone criticizes us.

For example if you are too concerned because you are not successful or even because you consider yourself a failure then most likely you will be extremely sensitive to any critical comment that questions your competence.

Depending on the number of the wounds you have you might be able to tolerate criticism in certain areas while being extremely sensitive to it in other areas.

If you get high grades each year but have no friends then you will tolerate criticism when it comes to questioning your intelligence or dedication but as soon as someone criticizes your social skills you will feel really bad.

Dealing with criticism

Are you extremely sensitive to criticism?
Do you feel really bad whenever someone criticizes you?

Extreme sensitivity to criticism is certainly a problem that could make your life intolerable. After all if every single critical comment can change your mood and make you feel down for a day or two then you will always be feeling down as long as you are meeting people.

While extreme sensitively to criticism is an annoying problem still it can be dealt with in a very short period of time if you understood few key concepts about emotional sensitivity. In this article i will tell you how to get rid of your sensitivity to criticism.

El Filibusterismo (lit. Spanish for "The Filibustering", also known by its English alternate title The Reign of Greed, is the second novel written by Philippine national hero José Rizal. It is the sequel to Noli Me Tangere and like the first book, was written in Spanish. It was first published in 1891 in Ghent, Belgium. Throughout the Philippines, the novel is read in senior high schools.

Thirteen years after leaving the Philippines, Crisostomo Ibarra returns as Simoun, a rich jeweler sporting a beard and blue-tinted glasses, and a confidant of the Captain-General. Abandoning his idealism, he becomes a cynical saboteur, seeking revenge against the Spanish Philippine system responsible for his misfortunes by plotting a revolution. Simoun insinuates himself into Manila high society and influences every decision of the Captain-General to mismanage the country’s affairs so that a revolution will break out. --Wiki

“Because my wife is a candidate of north district of Cebu City, we want Annabelle to be the congresswoman of the north district of Cebu. That’s why we’re all here supporting her because we know that she’s gonna do a good job and help the poor people of the north district,” padayag sa amahang Gutierrez.

I Shall Return
by Claude McKay

I shall return again; I shall return
To laugh and love and watch with wonder-eyes
At golden noon the forest fires burn,
Wafting their blue-black smoke to sapphire skies.
I shall return to loiter by the streams
That bathe the brown blades of the bending grasses,
And realize once more my thousand dreams
Of waters rushing down the mountain passes.
I shall return to hear the fiddle and fife
Of village dances, dear delicious tunes
That stir the hidden depths of native life,
Stray melodies of dim remembered runes.
I shall return, I shall return again,
To ease my mind of long, long years of pain.

"I Shall Return"

On March 11, 1942 Lt. Gen. Douglas MacArthur leaves the Philippine Islands after boasting that his men could repel any Japanese invasion. At the time MacArthur vows "I shall return." Two and a half years later, MacArther does return.

On October 17, 1944 the first American forces land on Leyte. What is left of the Japanese Navy is destroyed in the Battle of Leyte later the same month. In a four-day melee at sea, the Japanese lose four aircraft carriers, three battleships, 10 cruisers, 11 destroyers, and almost 11,000 men. These losses leave the Japanese without adequate naval forces to oppose operations in the Philippines and later operations at Iwo Jima and Okinawa. American losses amount to two escort carriers, one cruiser, and three destroyers.

On January 9, 1945 the Americans land on Luzon. Although Japanese resistance continues on Luzon until the end of the war, the key objectives (namely Manila and Corrigidor) are secure by the end of February 1945. -- http://home.online.nl/

MANILA, Philippines - Supermarkets still sell Korean instant noodles reported as cancer-causing and recently recalled by Korea's Food and Drug Administration, an environmental non-profit organization said on Tuesday.

Eco Waste Coalition safety campaigner Aileen Lozaro warned the public in a radio interview that, although many smaller stores have refused to offer the imported ramyeon or ramen from Korea, more popular supermarkets have not yet removed the said products from their shelves.

Korean officials recalled nine types of South Korean noodles from stores since October 25 after discovering they contain a substance benzopyrene, known in the United States as a probable carcinogen, Lozaro said.

The noodle company Nongshim, however, assured the public in South Korea on Monday that their products, exported in 80 countries, are "safe."

"The amount indicated in the broadcast is a very safe level. According to KFDA report, the benzopyrene level in the soup base was proved to be safe at a level of non-detection -4.7 ppb (parts per billion)," the company said in a statement.

Among the nine recalled goods, Lozaro's group said they found six of these instant noodles on Saturday still in Korean specialty stores in the Philippines, while they have already been banned by health authorities in China, Taiwan ang Hong Kong shortly after the recall order.

The identified Korean-manufactured ramen products still in the country are Nongshim's Mild Neoguri, Spicy Neoguri, large and small Neoguri Cup Noodles, large Saewootang Cup Noodles and Seng Seng Udong, the Eco Waste coalition posted on their blog.

Meanwhile, Filipino netizens warned their fiends and followers in social media from consuming the popular ramen products.
