what arrogance.  this guy achieved name recall (and thus, a senate seat) because he was also active when he was a congressman in the failed impeachment of a previous cj, hilario davide.  (the same holds true with chiz escudero.)  now we have 2 cayetano siblings in the senate (the children of the late rene cayetano who also became a senator after he came out in the national consciousness as a pro bono lawyer of alleged rape victim actress pepsi paloma in the 1980s; the case went nowhere.  cayetano was allegedly paid by the suspects.  another current senator's name figured out in that case, that of tito sotto.)  ugh.  some skeletons in the closet can rattle now and then.

no, this is far from political maturity.  it's political opportunism.  thanks to us, idiots as voters who vote for entertainers.

Senators who voted to convict and are up for reelection on 13 May 1213:

Alan Peter Cayetano (Nacionalista)
Francis Escudero (Independent)
Gregorio Honasan (Independent)
Loren Legarda (NPC)
Koko Pimentel (PDP-Laban)
Antonio Trillanes IV (Independent)

the rest are serving their current six-year term until 2016.

Senators who voted to convict but are barred from running since they are on their second consecutive six-year term:

Edgardo Angara (LDP) - candidacy of son Juan Edgardo Angara (LDP), incumbent Representative from Aurora, is under consideration
Panfilo Lacson (Independent)
Francis Pangilinan (Liberal)
Manny Villar (Nacionalista)

The 3 senators who voted to acquit are not candidates; Santiago is going to the international criminal court, arroyo is serving out his second consecutive six-year term, and marcos is serving his term until 2016.
#33410
The 3 who thought otherwise

1. Sen. Joker Arroyo
Sen. Joker Arroyo votes Chief Justice Renato Corona not guilty of culpable violation of the Constitution and betrayal of public trust for failure to disclose his statement of assets, liabilities and net worth.  "I cannot imagine removing a Chief Justice on account of a SALN," he said.

2. Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago
Santiago said the omission of Corona's $2.4 million and P80 million deposits in his SALN is not impeachable; she found it reprehensible that the Anti-Money Laundering Council report was introduced as evidence in the trial. She said she felt insulted by the use of anonymous sources in producing evidence in the trial.

"Three times is too much. Are you for real, prosecution? In the Philippines, anything can be manufactured," she said.

3. Sen. Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr.
Information was grossly exaggerated against the chief justice.

http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/
#33411
16. Sen. Ramon "Bong" Revilla Jr.
In his explanation, Revilla said Corona failed to live up to the standard set for the highest official in the judiciary.

17. Sen. Vicente Sotto III
(no reason quoted at source)

18. Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV
Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV said he did not accept Chief Justice Renato Corona's alibi that his undeclared peso deposits are commingled funds.

19. Sen. Manny Villar
He found Chief Justice Renato Corona guilty of culpable violation of the Constitution and betrayal of public trust for failing to truthfully declare all his assets in his statements of assets, liabilities and net worth (SALNs).

20. Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile
Enrile said Republic Act 6426 or the Foreign Currency Deposits Act cannot be interpreted as exception to the constitutional command to disclose all his assets.
#33412
13. Sen. Francis Pangilinan
He said the chief justice displayed a disturbing pattern of deception and a blatant disregard of law.

14. Sen. Aquilino "Koko" Pimentel III
Pimentel said any violation of the SALN law is ground for the removal of a regular public employee.

15. Sen. Ralph Recto
Recto said Corona's undeclared assets are so huge - $2.4 million in dollar deposits and P80 million in peso deposits - that "they cannot be brushed aside as innocent exclusions."
#33413
10. Sen. Manuel "Lito" Lapid
He was convinced that the chief magistrate tried to hide his dollars.

11. Sen. Loren Legarda
“If we acquit the Chief Justice, we would tragically lift the floodgate for public suspicion and widespread distrust on the highest institution of the judiciary.”

12. Sen. Sergio Osmeña III
Did Corona violate the Constitution?  Did he do it knowingly?  Did he betray the public trust?
#33414
7. Sen. Teofisto Guingona III
Sen. Teofisto Guingona III on Tuesday said Chief Justice Renato Corona is guilty of “constitutional perversion” when he failed to declare his $2.4 million in dollar deposits in his SALNs.

8. Sen. Gregorio Honasan
“What is clear is that based on the doubts, he is no longer fit to preside over the highest court in the land,” he said.

9. Sen. Panfilo Lacson
"I find the respondent guilty as charged under article 2," he said.
#33415
4. Sen. Franklin Drilon
Drilon said Corona cannot claim good faith when he failed to declare P80 million in peso deposits and $2.4 million in dollar deposits.

5. Sen. Chiz Escudero
Escudero said he disagrees with Corona's position that he need not declare his dollar deposits because of the Foreign Currency Deposits Act.

6. Sen. Jinggoy Estrada
Estrada said he is unconvinced by Corona’s explanation that he need not declare his dollar deposits in his statement of assets, liabilities and net worth. “I regret to say that I am not convinced because the Chief Justice is a learned man of law,” he said.
#33416
The 20 who found the CJ guilty

1. Sen. Edgardo Angara
"I may grant CJ honest mistake of judgment, but given his wide public experience this willful omission and taking into consideration the large amount of money amounts to culpable violation."

2. Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano
"It is his moral, human, constitutional duty to choose the constitution and not himself."

3. Sen. Pia Cayetano
She said there are no exceptions in the law ordering public officials to disclose all assets in his statement of assets, liabilities and net worth.

Miriam finds CJ innocent

by Ira Pedrasa, ABS-CBNnews.com
Posted at 05/29/2012 3:40 PM | Updated as of 05/29/2012 6:55 PM

MANILA, Philippines - Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago on Tuesday found Chief Justice Renato Corona innocent with respect to article 2 of the impeachment complaint, which accuses him of not disclosing his wealth in his Statements of Assets, Liabilities and Net worth (SALN).

Santiago said the omission of Corona's $2.4 million and P80 million deposits in his SALN was not an impeachable offense.

She said she found it reprehensible that the Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) report was introduced as evidence in the trial. She also said she felt insulted by the use of anonymous sources in producing evidence in the trial.

"Three times is too much. Are you for real, prosecution? In the Philippines, anything can be manufactured," she said.

She also noted many public officials use loopholes in the SALN law but are not caught and impeached.

She added: "Daming loopholes ng SALN Law na yan, hindi kayo umimik."

She also said that if God would give her another life, she would investigate everyone in the House of Representatives and the Senate, including herself.

At one point in her lengthy explanation, she was interrupted by Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile who asked her to wrap up. "I thought I was unlimited," she retorted.

Santiago was the second senator to vote for Corona's acquittal. The first was Sen. Joker Arroyo.

Four senators - Edgardo Angara, siblings Alan Peter and Pia Cayetano, Francis Escudero - have so far voted for conviction.

Sixteen votes are needed to remove Corona from office; 8 votes are needed to prevent a conviction.

Stand-up comic Willie Nepomuceno joked: “Sayang. Were it not for the confusion and divisiveness of the Pinoy overseas texters, we could have had the first ‘American Idol’ from Asia. A number of them thought Phillip Phillips was the Pinoy pride candidate and voted for him. Could any other name be more Philippine than that? Adding to the confusion was the usual clannish and partisan attitude of Pinoys made worse by the network wars. Of course, votes for Jessica Soho and Korina Sanchez were nullified! Seriously, only time will tell. Who knows? This whole thing may even boost local tourism … now that Americans know that it’s more fun with Phillip Phillips.”

Erlinda T. Elemen filed a nine-page lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court on Wednesday claiming that the "Basic Instinct" star harassed her continually during her five years on the job, especially about her "stupid" Filipino accent, and says that Stone ordered her to not speak in front of the children â€" Roan, 12, Laird, 7, and 6-year-old Quinn â€" so that they would "not talk like you."

whew!  what a stupid american has-been actor.

#33439
Elemen is seeking unspecified damages on harassment, wrongful termination, and retaliation claims.

Stone is well-known for being eccentric, outspoken, and oftentimes misguided. In 2005, she tried to solicit pledges to raise $1 million to get mosquito nets to the impoverished Tanzania, but was criticized by UNICEF for not doing the proper research. In the end, only $250,000 was raised, so UNICEF had to cough up the remaining $750,000 â€" and then the mosquito nets turned up on the black market, and were transformed into wedding dresses. After the 2008 earthquake in China, Stone insinuated the devastation was "karma" for the country's treatment of Tibetans and the Dalai Lama.

PacificCoastNews.com

Elemen's attorney, Solomon Gresen, said in the suit that although the nanny â€" who was promoted to lead caregiver after two years with the Stone family and was also living in their home â€" had "wonderful memories of the children," she was unable to deal with Stone's "increasingly hostile and abusive behavior." He added, "By her conduct, the actress made Elemen feel as if her ethnicity was offensive and would somehow adversely effect [sic] her children's upbringing. My client felt she was powerless to stop the behavior."

Stone's publicist is fighting back, dismissing Elemen as just a disgruntled former employee who only wants money now, 15 months later, after she failed to secure disability and worker's compensation payments. "Now, she is obviously looking for another opportunity to cash in," Paul Bloch wrote in a statement. "This is a frivolous lawsuit for absurd claims that are made-up and fabricated. Sharon Stone will be completely vindicated in court."

Sharon Stone Accused of Harassment by Former Nanny

By Kathleen Perricone

According to Sharon Stone's former nanny, looking after her three sons was a lot less stressful than dealing with the boys' famous mother.

The suit also reveals that Stone, Tibetan Buddhism convert, would not allow Elemen to read her Bible while in the actress' home, and alleges that the 53-year-old actress finally fired her in February 2011 once she discovered that Elemen had been paid overtime, which she deemed as "stealing" from her, even though it was in accordance with state law.

Keeping Your Heart and Bones Healthy

Calcium is a major building block of bones, with our skeleton storing 99 percent of the body’s calcium. Among the best sources are dairy products, canned fish with edible bones (such as sardines or salmon), green vegetables like broccoli, kale, and bok choy, nuts (especially almonds and Brazil nuts), and certain fruits, including oranges, apricots and dried figs, the International Osteoporosis Foundation reports.

Here are more ways to protect your bone and heart health:

Avoid smoking and secondhand smoke, advises Dr. Bale. Both are major risk factors for heart attack, stroke and osteoporosis.

Be sure to get enough vitamin D: deficiency also boosts the threat of both conditions. The IOF advises 800 to 1,000 iu of D daily for middle-aged or older people, about double the daily intake recommended in most countries.

Don’t be a lazybones. Regular weight-bearing exercise, including walking, jogging, dancing, and skipping, reduce risk for fractures later in life. A scary fact: Older women who sit 9 or more hours a day have a 50 percent higher risk for hip fracture than those who sit fewer than six hours a day.

Limit TV time: A 2011 study found that people who devoted four or more hours a daily to screen-based leisure time entertainmentâ€"mainly watching TVâ€"had double the risk of a major cardiac event resulting in hospitalization, death or both, compared to people who spent less than 2 hours glued to the tube.

http://health.yahoo.net/
#33445
The Optimal Daily Dietary Dose of Calcium

The study also found that people who consume a moderate amount of calcium in their dietâ€"820 mg dailyâ€"had a 31 percent lower risk of heart attacks than those who consumed the least calcium.

Confused? “What this study is telling patients is that too little or too much calcium are both bad for your heart,” says Dr. Bale. “By suggesting getting 820 mg through healthy food choices seems to be the sweet spot for heart attack prevention, the study adds to medical knowledge by identifying what may be the best daily dietary ‘dose’ of this mineral, which is also crucial for bone health.
#33446
The Calcium Danger Zone

After taking other factors that could influence risk into account, the researchers found that heart attack risk was highest in people who consumed more than 1,100 mg of calcium daily.

In the earlier WHI study, a seven-year randomized clinical trial, postmenopausal women were randomly assigned to either take 1 g of calcium and 400 iu of vitamin D daily, or a placebo. The hope was to show that supplements lowered heart attack and stroke risk, as was widely believed in the past.

Instead, calcium, with or without vitamin D raised heart attack risk by 24 percent.
#33447
How Much Do Supplements Raise Risk?

In the new study, participants who were 35 to 64 when they joined the study between 1994 and 1998 were quizzed about their usual diet during the prior 12 months and whether they regularly took vitamin or mineral supplements. They were then tracked for 11 years, during which 354 heart attacks, 260 strokes, and 267 related deaths occurred.

When the researchers analyzed vitamin/mineral supplement use, they found:

Participants who took supplements that included calcium were 86 percent more likely to have a heart attack, compared to people who didn’t take any supplements.

Participants who only took calcium pills were more than twice as likely to have a heart attack.
#33448
Should You Stop Taking Calcium Supplements?

The research doesn’t prove that supplements actually cause heart attacks, just that there’s a link to significantly higher risk, says Dr. Bale, who advised his patients to stop taking calcium pills last year.

His recommendation was prompted by a 2011 analysis of earlier studies, including the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) involving about 30,000 women, which found an association between using calcium supplements and raised risk for heart attacks, strokes and other cardiovascular events, with relatively little bone health benefit.

“In that analysis, for every 1,000 women who took calcium supplementsâ€"with or without vitamin Dâ€"there were six additional heart attacks or strokes, while only three bone fractures were prevented,” says Dr. Bale. “We tell our patients to get their calcium through a healthy diet, rather than a supplement.”

Calcium Supplement Linked to Higher Heart Attack Risk

By Lisa Collier Cool
May 24, 2012

Calcium supplements can double heart attack risk and should be taken “with caution,” only for medical reasons, European researchers warn. A new study of 24,000 people adds to mounting evidence linking calcium supplementsâ€"taken with or without vitamin Dâ€"to greater danger of heart attacks, strokes, and other cardiovascular events.

Not only is the safety of calcium supplements coming under increased scientific scrutiny, but the new study is the first to define the exact daily dose that’s the danger zone for higher heart attack risk. The findings are importantâ€"and concerningâ€"for the millions of Americans, particularly postmenopausal women, who routinely pop calcium supplements to prevent or treat brittle bones (osteoporosis).

To learn more about what the scary findings mean, as well as the best ways to protect your heart and bone health, I talked to Bradley Bale, MD, medical director of the Heart Health Program for the Grace Clinic in Lubbock, Texas, a leading specialist in heart attack prevention.

At any rate, the success of the National ID System will only be ensured once it is demonstrated to the public that indeed the purpose for the implementation of the scheme is being served, that is; providing a streamlined, efficient and productive government service sans red tape, fixers and other negative notions associated with transacting business with the government.

In that instance, perhaps, everybody will be lining up to get his or her own National Identification Card.

The proposed national ID system

by: ALEXANDER YANO
manilatimes.net
May 24, 2012

Talks are again ripe in the House of Representatives to push through with a law instituting a national identification system.

Recently, the House Committee on Revision of Laws agreed to conduct public hearings on House Bill 131 and 241 sponsored by Albay’s Rep. Al Francis Bichara and Camiguin’s Rep. Pedro Romualdo respectively. Both bills seek to establish a national ID system aimed primarily to facilitate and streamline government services, minimize red tape and increase productivity.

One thing novel in the new proposals is that this time around citizens will not be required to have the national ID but will only get one on a voluntary basis, apparently so as not to antagonize some sectors who time and again have opposed its establishment.

libog gyod hinoon ko sa unintended publicity aning mga grupo.  sa una sad bitaw, reklamo sad ang certain groups nga satanic ang harry potter.

i'm no fan of lady gaga nor am i familiar with her songs, but we ought to be more forthcoming with our own spirituality and let youth culture be.  if it doesn't kill, it must be harmless.  come to think of it, is the u.s. being harmed because of lady gaga?

To illustrate, if I have P100,000 in my bank account and lend it out at a  5-percent interest rate for a month’s use to six borrowers consecutively, my bank balance at the end of six months would be P130,000. This is the sum of my initial P100,000 plus the interest of P5,000 earned for each of  the six lending transactions.

For Morales though, my bank account would be 10 times more: P1.33 million. This is her “transaction balance” for the 13 transactionsâ€"my initial deposit of P100,000 plus P600,00 (the sum of six withdrawals of P100,000 each when I lend it) plus P630,000 (the sum of six deposits of P105,000 each when I’m repaid).

This is exactly how Morales arrived at Corona’s “$12 million dollar accounts.”

Moralesâ€"or Mendozaâ€"therefore had to surreptitiously misrepresent “transactions” as “balances,” to generate significant amounts.  This was done by a conceptual sleight of hand.

Morales’ PowerPoint presentation states: “The amounts appearing in the tabulation are not account balances but transaction balances.” This was a devious invention of a term in order that the sum of transactions would be confused with “balances,” so that Corona would appear to have huge bank accounts. Indeed, Morales would later on drop the “transaction” adjective, referring only to “aggregations,” “balances,” or “bank accounts.”

Transactions are the withdrawals and deposits on your bank account over time. The net result of these, what’s left, is your bank balance at a given time. (from 'Colossal deception on Corona’s accounts' by Rigoberto Tiglao, Philippine Daily Inquirer, Thursday, May 17th, 2012)

In his testimony, Corona denied the claims of Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales that he has 82 dollar accounts amounting to US$ 10 to 12 million and 31 peso bank deposits.

let's hear it from the "other side", explaining how this US$10 to 12 million was "earned", for fairness' sake or for the sake of banking literacy...

"Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales’ allegation that Chief Justice Renato Corona has $12 million in dollar accounts will go down in Philippine history as one of the biggest and most deviously constructed deceptions ever foisted on the public.

Morales unfortunately swallowed hook, line and sinker the deeply flawed analysis of raw data made by Heidi Mendoza, whom President Aquino deep-selected to overtake five officer-levels to become deputy commissioner of the Commission on Audit.

Morales’ allegations are based on two colossal errors. One involves confusing the meanings of “transactions” and “balances”; the other exploits laymen’s ignorance of banking transactions and how these are documented.

The first error actually was deliberate as Aquino’s operatives still had a big problem when they got raw data from the secretariat of Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC). These didn’t report Corona’s bank balances but merely transactions, whose average amount per transaction for deposits was only $104,737, hardly eyebrow-raising. (The AMLC report, marked “For Intelligence Purpose Only,” however, has no authorship and its entries have no source document, which opens the possibility of its tampering.)" i've search the internet highways and found no exact formula nor simple cost of first-time registration of an old car.  (brought in from abroad, that's why.)

my problem is i've been getting different costs, or, shall i say, offers from different people.  the range in cebu is from 45k to 68k, depending on who the fixer is (insider or outsider).  the range is quite steep and i'm beginning to feel that i'm being had.

the first-time car registration in manila is only 12k, inclusive of car insurance.  how much is the range of cost in bohol, please?

p.s. ilaronon kog nawong, huhuhu.  please i need your guidance.

there's just one thing that we lack that's urgent for tourists--presentable and really comfortable public toilets to and from remote places that can be reached only by land; these public toilets are best placed in strategic locations for stopovers that include restaurants where tourists can refresh for awhile, usually after an hour or two on the road.

when someone thinks of developing a tourist potential, please think comfortable public toilets first.

Mukhang Nakuryente ka, Sen. Sotto. Eat Bulaga! Donde esta la Paloma? Your palomito es muy pequeno. Vic Sotto for Senator?  Stick to being a payaso. (ynigooctaviano)

obviously this refers to pepsi paloma, the 15-year-old movie actress of the 1980s.  some backgrounder:

Pepsi Paloma was an underaged Filipino-American actress who successfully made a name for herself during the early 80’s making sexy movies. She was one of the three “softdrink beauties” (the others were Coca Nicolas and Sarsi Emmanuelle) who simultaneously hit the big screen.

***

In 1982, she lodged a rape case against “Eat Bulaga!” hosts Joey de Leon, Vic Sotto, and Richie D’Horsie (also known as Richie Reyes). Paloma’s lawyer in the rape case was a much younger Rene Cayetano who would later be elected as a Philippine senator. The rape case was settled out of court. Afterwards, she stated that she was coerced to sign an affidavit of desistance by Tito Sotto (another “Eat Bulaga!” co-host and a future Philippine senator) to drop the case which had a punishment of death. De Leon, Vic Sotto and D’Horsie admitted guilt and made a public apology to Paloma.

In 1985, still burdened by her past, Pepsi Paloma hanged herself to death.

In last Thursday’s hearing by the Senate foreign relations committee, Senators Loren Legarda and Sotto upbraided Justice Secretary Leila de Lima and Foreign Undersecretary Rafael Seguis for quickly declaring the immunity of Shcks in disregard of the victim’s rights.

how the story unfolded wasn't quick.  judging from the press reports, the "rape" supposedly happened on april 23, the panamanian guy was apprehended and detained the next day (which, if the vienna convention had been applied quickly, the apprehension and detention shouldn't have come to pass at all even for a minute; i think he was detained for 5 days), the certificate of immunity was issued after almost a week, the persona non grata status was declared a few days later, and the panamanian left the country may 11.  it had rather taken that long for a supposedly guilty party to take flight.

“If that came from the Panamanian, the Department of Justice should all the more be outraged,” he said.

why force his outrage on the department of justice whose battery of lawyers know how to interpret international and local laws better?
