By the twelfth century, the kingdom included parts of Sumatra, the Malay Peninsula, Western Java, Sulawesi, the Moluccas, Borneo and the Philippines, most notably the Sulu Archipelago and the Visayas islands (and indeed the latter island group, as well as its population, is named after the empire). The earliest solid proof of its existence dates from the 7th century; a Chinese monk, I-Tsing, wrote that he visited Srivijaya in 671 for 6 months. (wikipedia)

Srivijaya and by extension Sumatra had been known by different names to different peoples. The Chinese called it Sanfotsi or San Fo Qi, and there was an even older kingdom of Kantoli that could be considered the predecessor of Srivijaya. (wikipedia)

Liu on Monday defended China's military spending, saying the nation's defence policy was transparent and added Beijing would not seek "hegemony when it is stronger".

why mention "hegemony" at all?  i don't understand how this word got into the picture unless it's expressing what's in the subconscious.  call it by any other name, hegemony almost always follows dominance.

there are times when i can see energy, that's why.  yes, see as in literally seeing with my eyes.  as for the chinese practice of acupuncture, without it probably my back pains and scoliosis would have continued to torture me.  i was on rehab, but that took long.  with just 2 sessions of acupuncture, i was able to raise my arms again.  not all ailments can be treated by acupuncture though.  my trick: i go to medical doctors who also practice acupuncture.  i do like eastern medicine, especially the chinese one.  it's just that they have to keep off marlborough shoal. ;D

p.s. one of the last things i read thoroughly as a tb visitor before i decided to join was bugsay's posts on feng shui here.

Here's one:

Bag Hu, which in archaic pidgin Srivijayan means "bad weather", also known as Toy Bo (literally, "thorn-bone"), is a popular Boholano symbol for bad luck. It often depicts a bald-headed, thin but pot-bellied drunkard with a coconut shell bowl ("hungot") in one hand and a bamboo container ("sugong") in the other, sitting on a pile of firewood (usually coconut parts such as "palwa", "bukong", "butay" and "takong") which he gathers and exchanges for coconut wine ("tuba"). According to Bagtu Holbo lore, it is believed to attract evil, jeopardize wealth, and decrease income. It is usually sent anonymously to one's enemies.

;D

hahaha!  i can hardly wait for say bug.  sige na bi...

p.s. ilikay ang tblanders sa toy bo ha? ;D

money tree, pod, isles. i recommend growing a money tree.

actually, medyo matawag kog tuho-tuhoon.  my basis for believing the feng shui is as simple as my belief in acupuncture and why the pyramids of egypt are designed that way.  we find ways to align the energies around us.  once, i had terrible headaches that cannot be explained, until i realized that i slept with my head directly under a very big beam.  my constant headaches went away after i moved my bed.  the best way for calling the best of energies?  prayers.

as for chan chu, every time i look at this particular decoration (and maneki neko, the japanese battery-operated beckoning cat), i'm simply reminded to save.  the reminder is enough good energy.  so, yes, i mean it when i say i have more 10-peso coins now because i save 10-peso coins in my piggy banks (that's plural, hehe), piggy banks being a childhood habit that i never let go.

and yes, i want my money plant by the main door, below the wind chimes.  lording it over everything, at the topmost middle of the door, is a crucifix.

WASHINGTON D.C. - How much will it cost for the chance to shake President Aquino’s hand? If you’re a Filipino in the American capital, that would be $250.

That is the cost of admission at the launching of the US-Philippine Society on the eve of President Aquino’s scheduled meeting with President Obama at the White House on June 8.

The event will be held at the plush Mandarin Oriental that overlooks the 14th Street Bridge and the glistening waters of the Tidal Basin. An estimated 400 people are expected to attend the launching that has raised not a few eyebrows in the Fil-Am community.

That is apparently the only opportunity for Fil-Ams to sit down with the President in Washington DC. His only other scheduled get-together with Filipinos will be in Los Angeles, California on the homeward leg of his journey.

another misleading headline that favors the sensational.  it's not the handshake that's $250 but the mandarin oriental facilities and services and obviously a dinner.  and why should fil-ams complain if they didn't like to go and spend $250?  stay at home, then.
#33357
samot kog kalibog.  ang lugdangan ani, ang kabaw nahimong tawo and vice versa. ;D
#33358
Still, some Fil-Ams privately told ABS-CBN News that there could have been a better use for their $250, such as donating the sum to any of the charity projects DC-based Fil-Ams mount every year for the poor back home.

“We can’t say no,” said one community leader who goes home regularly for medical missions. Officials from the Philippine Embassy have reportedly been making calls to urge people to buy tickets and come see the President.

“Nakakahiya humindi,” explained another Fil-Am.

Fil-Ams have mixed feelings about President Aquino although the conviction of former Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona in a first-ever successful impeachment trial in the Philippines appears to have buoyed his stocks here.

Some of his supporters in the US Pinoys for Good Governance (USP4GG) plan to picket outside the White House to show support for President Aquino, whom they campaigned for in the last elections.

“It’s important we show President Obama that President Aquino has the support of Fil-Am voters here,” explained USP4GG member Eric Lachica.

The President is arriving on the evening of June 6 and is scheduled to meet with President Obama at the Oval Office on June 8. The meeting appears to be keenly followed by Philippine media. The White House has reportedly asked the President's press handlers to trim down his entourage -- including some 30 accredited Filipino journalists -- because there simply won't be enough room.

PNoy's $250 handshake raises eyebrows in DC

by Rodney Jaleco, ABS-CBN North America News Bureau

ABS-CBN News sources said most of the tables have already been purchased by “rich and famous” behind the formation of the society, including communications magnate Manny Pangilinan, banker Washington SyCip and other Filipino business titans. Large American multinationals operating in the Philippines gobbled up the rest of the tables.

But some officials reportedly fretted there might not be enough “Filipino faces” in the crowd so they’ve been calling on Fil-Am community leaders to cough up the $250 and beef up the Filipino presence in the crowd.

Unlike his predecessor, there will apparently be no free dinners from President Aquino.

Former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s visit to the US was often accompanied by controversy. While in New York, she reportedly splurged on a $20,000 dinner in Manhattan’s Le Cirque; then plunked another $15,000 at the Bobby Vans steakhouse here.

She also appeared overzealous in her desire to personally meet President Obama. And while President Aquino had also sought a White House meeting, officials point out that he was coming here on an invitation of President Obama delivered by State Secretary Hillary Clinton during a visit to Manila.

Another aspirin plus? Fighting breakouts. The acetylsalicylic acid in aspirin is a close relative of salicylic acid, which is a dermatologist favorite to treat acne. Though the compounds aren’t quite the same, some people swear by aspirin masks to calm that big, red zit.

Simply make a paste of crushed aspirin, and spread it on your face to reduce inflammation, and remove oil and dead skin cells. If you’re not a candidate for daily oral aspirin, give this topical do-it-yourself beauty treatment a try!

Who should take a daily aspirin? Not everyone. But a major risk is GI upset and GI bleeding. You can minimize those by taking a half glass of warm water before and after your two baby aspirin’s a day (the dose we recommend you discuss with your doc). Now we hate to tell you to see your docâ€"but here you should. Only your doctor can help you decide if the benefits of daily aspirin will truly outweigh your risks, so consult with yours before adding aspirin to your daily routine.

And never take hormone therapy or birth control pills without aspirin.

There are two suspected ways it may help battle cancer. For one, aspirin hinders an enzyme that’d otherwise promote tumor growth. It also has a big inflammation-quelling componentâ€"and too much of this kind of irritation compromises cells, leaving them vulnerable to abnormal growth.

It’s this inflammation-fighting effect that helps aspirin slow agingâ€"a huge favor for your complexion. Inflammation takes its toll on the skin in a variety of waysâ€"including acne, rosacea, and visible signs of aging like wrinkles and sagging skin.

High levels of inflammation cause a faster rate of collagen breakdown, which can accelerate the aging process. Collagen helps give your skin structure, helping it to look full, smoother and elastic. When it breaks down, skin starts to sag, wrinkle, and look less vibrant.

Aspirin is a blood-thinner by nature, so keeping your vessels clearer of clots puts you at a lower risk for heart attack and stroke. But a slew of recent analyses have looked at aspirin’s effects on several cancers. In one, University of Oxford researchers reported that the risk of getting cancer (and dying from cancer) of the breast (yours), ovaries (yours), prostate (probably his), esophagus, colon and rectum (both genders) and brain (fill in this one) dropped substantiallyâ€"like 30 to 60 percent lessâ€"for those taking daily aspirin for three years or more. Aspirin’s protective effects held up for various kinds of cancer and kept them from spreading, too: breast, lung, brain, esophageal and colon cancer to name just a few.

Aspirin: The Anti-Aging Pill

Studies suggest it lowers cancer and heart disease in you. The bonus: it could grant you clearer, younger-looking skin, too. Yupâ€"there is some risk, but here’s how to minimize.

Aspirin, the little pill that packs a punch against heart disease and stroke, boasts another health claim: reducing your chances of having a cancer and of dying from a cancer if you get one. Another plus? It can help your skin look younger, longer, and fight acne to boot!

Majority Leader Vicente Sotto said he had encountered many Supreme Court decisions “whereby lower court judges were dismissed and deprived of all their benefits for simple infractions of law or missteps.”

“Should the same strict measures ought to be applied to members of the Supreme Court?” he asked.

Senators Alan Peter Cayetano and several other senators also referred to the Flores case in casting a vote against Corona.

“The court clerk who did not declare her stall was immediately dismissed. Why is it that when a rich man is arrested, he can explain, make excuses, twist the laws and invent technicalities?” Cayetano asked.

Senator Loren Legarda said that if Flores can be dismissed, “I do not see any reason why we cannot apply the same law to the Chief Justice.”

“If we acquit the Chief Justice, we would tragically lift the floodgates for public suspicion and widespread disgust for the highest judicial institution. We also lower the bar for accountability of public officials,” she said.

Perpetually disqualified

“Ms. Flores was perpetually disqualified from holding office. If the court was supplied with bank passbook of Flores (that contained) $10,000 that was not reported in her SALN, would the court ruling be the same? Dismissal and perpetual disqualification? Yes. The Supreme Court would have ruled similarly,” Osmeña surmised.

“If these public officers are dismissed for failing to declare far less valuable assets in their SALNs despite and regardless of excuses, there is more reason to apply the law when assets in question amount to more than P80M,” he added.

Osmeña referred to the $2.4 million and P80.7 million in hard cash that Corona admitted as his deposits in several banks.

“We should not penalize a poor man for stealing bicycle but rule that the rich man must first steal a Mercedes before he is subject to a similar penalty,” Osmeña said.

“We must tell all the Ms. Floreses that justice is to the best of our ability, applied equally to the rich and powerful as well as the poor and powerless,” he added.

Flores’ case was cited several times as the Supreme Court precedent that must be observed in disciplining one who works in the judiciary.

Case of court interpreter served as template for Senate decision to convict Corona

By Cathy Yamsuan
Philippine Daily Inquirer
May 30th, 2012

A 15-year-old Supreme Court decision dismissing a lowly court interpreter from government service for not reporting a market stall in her statement of assets, liabilities and net worth (SALN) served as template for the conviction of Chief Justice Renato Corona.

Senator Sergio Osmeña III said the Supreme Court had issued “numerous” decisions on SALN violations by government officials and employees.

But the Rabe vs Flores case of 1997 deserves notice since it was also about a court worker who failed to disclose a property, he said.

The Regional Trial Court Branch 4 in Panabo, Davao, dismissed Delsa Flores from service for failing to disclose ownership of a stall in a public market in her SALN.

The high court also forfeited her retirement benefits and accrued leave credits and barred her from reemployment in government, including in government-owned or -controlled corporations.

The Court said Flores’ failure “to disclose her business interest, which she herself admitted, is inexcusable and is a clear violation” of Republic Act No. 6713, or the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials and Employees.

the downfall of people who are high up is a source of perverse joy.  schadenfreude.  political carcass na ni si bo xilai nga daghang kontra, mao nga gitabangan na sa mga vultures.  as for zhang, she had always been very ambitious, even changing her name (gibali lang) to make her entry to the west as an actor easier.  but we know that there's more to the truth than what's reported.

di gyod baya angay motoo sa tanang news items fully kay despite journalism ethics nga kunohay angay gyod sundon sa mga journalists, di malikayan nga naa gyoy bias ang gasuwat.

an example: zhang ziyi and bo xilai both make good copies.  fireworks kun iparis ang duha ug intriga.  now, ingnon na lang nato nga the only journalist nga nakahibawo ani nga kalaki ni zhang iyang igsoon, di gyod ni mogawas estoryaha.  it's good copy, pero kay igsoon man, protektahan.  that's bias.  the opposite holds true.  kun kontra, iduot hinoon, mag-fabricate pag pakapin.

mas pabor ko para way gubot.  the country could ill afford a constitutional crisis.  ang ako lang, kinsa may mo-impeach ug mga senador?  naa ba kahay makaingon ani nila nga pristine pod ang ilang mga background to justify their being in that chamber, even having the power to impeach other erring government officials?  hinaot unta nga wa nay televised investigations aron di na sila mopaporma.  and start learning to obey laws kay purya, pila kaha ana nila ang daghang asawa.  i know of two.
