Mysterious Night-shining Clouds Spotted Over Northern Europe
- Coming out of the Arctic
By: Lucian Dorneanu, Science Editor - Softpedia

This image shows one of the first ground sightings of noctilucent clouds in the 2007 season over Budapest, Hungary on June 15, 2007

Breaking images taken by a new NASA satellite shows extremely detailed images of a mysterious kind of clouds appearing over the Arctic region and moving towards Northern Europe. These clouds shine in the night sky and are moving out of the polar regions and scientists can't explain why.

They are called "noctilucent clouds" which
literally means "night-shining" in Latin, and were first observed in 1885, two years after the Krakatoa eruption. But most volcanic eruptions do not spew material high enough in the atmosphere to seed the formation of the icy clouds.

Forming at the edge of space, they appear to be getting brighter and more frequent, raising questions as to their possible link to global warming. It's not only this increase in brightness that puzzles scientists, it's also the fact that they used to be spotted at high latitudes, but in recent years, the evening clouds have been spotted as far south as Utah, in the US.

This is the first time the "Aeronomy of Ice in the Mesosphere" (AIM) satellite saw these strange cloud formations and even people on the ground started seeing them on June 6, over Northern Europe.

Their place of origin is thought to be the upper layer of the atmosphere called the mesosphere, from about 50 km to 80-90 km altitude above Earth's surface. Made of water vapor and ice crystals, they usually appear in summer above the North Pole and also in the South Pole summer.

AIM satellite will document the clouds over both regions, for the first time, to help researchers understand why these noctilucent clouds form and how they could be indicating climate changes around the planet.

"It is clear that these clouds are changing, a sign that a part of our atmosphere is changing and we do not understand how, why or what it means," said James Russell III of Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia, an atmospheric scientist. "These observations suggest a connection with global change in the lower atmosphere and could represent an early warning that our Earth environment is being changed."

How to Keep Your Muscles Strong with a Pill - Scientists try to stop muscle wasting
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

You go to the gym, train hard for some months, but â€" holly s**t â€" you must pump iron for life to keep looking like that. A drug stopping the dismantling of the muscles would be your dream product to get rid of the gym for a while.

As soon as we stop exercising, muscle proteins start melting; idle muscles just keep a high metabolism without any use. When food and exercising are constant, while muscle growth and breakdown are in a subtle equilibrium. Lack of exercise and starvation do not necessarily induce muscle atrophy (wasting), but also microgravity in the case of astronauts, and many conditions like kidney failure, cancer and AIDS. Once the muscle is lost, exercising turns more difficult, and a vicious cycle is created.

Anabolic steroids could stop the atrophy, but they have undesirable side effects (impotence for example) and still require exercising.

Researchers found that muscle atrophy is an active process induced by a complex of genes, so that they focus on shutting it off to stop muscle wasting. The process uses the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway (UPP), employed to break down unwanted proteins in the cell. Tagged proteins are chopped by proteasomes into their component amino acids, which are reused.

Muscle proteic filaments within cells are melted,
but the number of muscle cells stays the same, they just get thinner and weaker. At least 90 genes, called atrogenes, are linked to atrophy. Atrogin1 and muRF1, were found in 2001 and are the only two atrogenes active just during muscle atrophy. They encode ubiquitin ligases, the enzymes that tag the proteins to break down.

Their activity is almost zero in normal muscles, but booms in sick animals; when shut off, the atrophy stops, after both disuse and disease.

A group from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, discovered increased activity of the gene erg1 in mice experiencing muscle atrophy. This gene encodes a potassium channel protein encountered in both skeletal and cardiac muscle. In heart muscle, the channel presents two varieties, erg1a and erg1b, which help the heart maintain its rhythm by letting the muscle repolarize after each beat.

A mutated erg1 induces "long QT" syndrome, when the heart muscle cannot repolarize fast enough, situation in which sudden heart failure can occur, erg1a was found responsible for the appearance of atrophy. An existing antihistamine drug, astemizole, inactivates erg1a channels and has anti-atrophy effects in mice, and in healthy animals, muscles even grew bigger. Erg1a could be involved in the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway, but it is not known precisely how.

Still, the astemizole not only shut off erg1 channels in skeletal muscle, but also in the heart, inducing long QT syndrome, and it was withdrawn in 1999.

In 2004, a team led by Alfred Goldberg, a cell biologist at Harvard University, focused on gene controllers, like Foxo that drive the activity of many atrogenes. When Foxo is turned off, atrophy stops.

Another issue: insulin and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), involved in muscle synthesis, can also impede muscle breakdown by inhibiting Foxo and the atrogin1 gene. Rising levels of IGF1 significantly increased the mice’s strength, even when they did not exercise. That's why both IGF-1 and insulin are banned, being considered doping drugs in sports. "You don't see active Foxo in normal muscle because insulin and IGF-1 suppress it, but exactly how inactivity or disease activates Foxo we're still trying to find out." said Goldberg.

Foxo could be connected to the erg1a-mediated atrophy. Several companies are developing researches for drugs that stop the atrogin1 protein, and proteasome inhibitors like Velcade, employed in cancer, that could speed down muscle atrophy.

A drug against muscle atrophy would be beneficial for patients who have to stay in bed for days, easing their recovery. Weaning patients off respirators would become easier as the diaphragm would not be weakened. Disease or broken bone would not necessarily cause weakness, and long physiotherapy treatments. Aging people too would benefit from these drugs which could prolong their independent life.

NASA funds many of these researches: on a trip to Mars, astronauts would lose about 25 % of their muscle mass and would be too weak to perform any operation there.

Of course these drugs will be extremely tempting for athletes for doping, but for couch potatoes, too.
Of course, the effects are different from those that come after training, which has also other physiological effects like better blood supply to muscles, more mitochondria â€" that "fuels" all the burnings in the body, inside the muscle cells â€" stronger bones, and better brain circulation.

Still, skipping gym for a few weeks would rather encourage people to go to the gym, as restarting a training schedule would be less painful.

Early Sex Induces Depression - In case of short-term relationships
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

We have sex for the sheer pleasure of it, but a new study shows that a sexual life started at the wrong age does in fact induce sadness, clinically known as depression. Girls who have lost their virginity at an early age present a slightly higher risk of feeling depressed compared to their counterparts, as the researchers discovered. Still, the sufferance occurred only when the sexual encounter happened outside a romantic relationship, while the boys' mind was not affected in any way if they started their sexual activity early.

"I suspected that there might be negative effects of early sex for some groups. And that's what I found, but only under very specific circumstances." said co-author Ann M. Meier, an assistant professor of sociology at the University of Minnesota.

These findings have relevance for the abstinence
education promoted by the welfare reform act of 1996, which states that "sexual activity outside of the context of marriage is likely to have harmful psychological and physical effects." The results show a mixed situation, while the average age at which teenagers start their sexual life steadily lowered during the 1990s, now almost 50 % of American teens report that they already had their first sexual experience by the time they graduate from high school.

Meier chose a national representative group of 8,563 adolescents in grades 7 through 12 who were virgin at the selection time. They were questioned again one to two years later about their emotional and mental health, family background, romantic relationships, but the questionnaires also assessed depression and self-esteem. 1,265 of the teenagers had already lost their virginity.

The average age on the first sexual experience depended on race, from 15.2 years in case of black people to 17.5 years for Asians. In case of families with a lower income, this age was even lower. These teenagers were divided into those who had their first sexual experience earlier than the average age, at the average age, and later than average. Only heterosexual sex was considered, and the researchers assessed just depressive symptoms, not clinical depression.

The first sexual experience was linked to a lowered self-esteem only in girls who were younger than the average age and not involved in a romantic relationship. Girls who started their sexual life at the average age or later did not displayed higher risk for depressive symptoms compared to those who were still virgin. An an even higher increase in depressive symptoms was observed in girls who lost virginity in short-term relationships. "It was not so much chronological age that was significant in determining whether sex was psychologically harmful, but rather the deviation from the socially normal age." said Meier.

"I think this is a good study. I'm struck at how much you have to recognize that teen sexual behavior occurs in a social context. One of the big findings here is that it's age norms and not the actual age that matters, and these norms vary depending on what group in society you're in." said Laura Lindberg, a sociologist and senior researcher at the Guttmacher Institute, not involved in the research. "There were well-known negative effects of early sex, such as early pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. But overall, there are very few effects on mental health, either negative or positive.", Meier said.

The Sex Drive Is Increased by Sexual Fantasies - In case of both men and women
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Too much imagination is not only the "fuel" of human technological and scientific development, but also of the human sex life. This is the conclusion reached by researchers at the Department of Personality, Evaluation and Psychological Treatment of the University of Granada (Universidad de Granada), after investigating some psychological factors like erotophilia (positive attitude towards sexuality), sexual fantasies and anxiety linked to sex drive in humans.

They employed an adapted Sexual Desire Inventory by Spector, Carey and Steinberg to assess the solitary sexual motivation and the drive in
having sexual intercourse with another person (didactic sexual desire). "It gives relevant information about possible disagreements in sexual desire that may appear in a couple", said co-author Juan Carlos Sierra Freire.

Loss of sexual desire is one of the basic factors known to induce sexual dysfunction in the Spanish women.

The team found a crucial link between sexual desire and erotophilia in men. Men react more positively at sexual stimuli and thoughts, accepting them without difficulties. Sexual fantasies increased sexual drive in men. Still, some types of fantasies, like sadism, can inhibit a male's sex drive.

In women, too, the level of sexual fantasies was linked to higher sex drive. However, "women normally present more anxiety disorders than men" and anxiety was found to dictate women’s sexual appetite.

The research was made on 608 volunteers aged 13 to 43. 32% of the men with low libido had also low erotophilia and few sexual fantasies, while 18% of the women with low libido was linked to higher anxiety and low levels of sexual fantasies. Psychological factors were found to be sex specific.

Sex drive is linked to the female's arousal and orgasm. Sexual intercourse lacking desire affects negatively these sexual responses. "This first stage is the most complex because it is influenced by many factors", said Sierra.

Sexual drive is linked to social, psychological, and neurophysiologic factors, that's why adequate neurohormonal activity with a proper sexual stimulation are required for maintaining the woman's sexual desire. "Besides this complexity, there is no comparison model, as occurs in the men’s excitation stage, where it is possible to determine the degree of excitation depending on the erection. Education on sexual stimulation and response as well as healthy attitudes towards sexuality is extremely important. In this way, sexual intercourse for those people will be more pleasurable and with less probability of having sexual dysfunctions." said Sierra.

Sexual fantasies are already used in sex therapy to decrease anxiety towards sexual intercourse, if there is no organic cause (hormonal or of any other nature).

Cultivation of cacao trees can occur only in tropical climates, 20 degrees north or south of the equator. Principal growing areas include West Africa, Brazil, Ecuador and the Indies. Generally, it takes five years before trees begin bearing fruit in the form of pods. Each pod contains an average of 20 to 40 cream-colored cocoa beans. Nearly 400 beans are required to make a pound of chocolate liquor, the semi-liquid mass produced by grinding the beans. A non-alcoholic substance, chocolate liquor is the basis of all chocolate and cocoa products.

German chocolate cake did not originate in Germany. In 1852, Sam German developed a sweet baking bar for Baker's Chocolate Co. The product was named in honor of him -- Baker's German's Sweet Chocolate.

Why bananas ar good for you

Containing three natural sugars - sucrose, fructose and glucose combined with fiber, a banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy. Research has proven that just two bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout. No wonder the banana is the number one fruit with the world's leading athletes.

Providing energy isn't the only way a banana can help us keep fit. It can also help overcome or prevent a substantial number of illnesses and conditions, making it a must to add to our daily diet.

Depression: According to a recent survey amongst people suffering from depression, many felt much better after eating a banana. This is because bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein that the body converts into serotonin, known to make you relax, improve your mood and generally make you feel happier.

PMS: Forget the pills - eat a banana. The vitamin B6 it contains regulates blood glucose levels, which can affect your mood.

Anemia: High in iron, bananas can stimulate the production of hemoglobin in the blood and so helps in cases of anemia.

Blood Pressure: This unique tropical fruit is extremely high in potassium yet low in salt, making it the perfect way to beat high blood pressure. So much so, the US Food and Drug Administration has just allowed the banana industry to make official claims for the fruit's ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke.

Brain Power: 200 students at a Twickenham (Middlesex) school were helped through their exams this year by eating bananas at breakfast, break, and lunch in a bid to boost their brain power. Research has shown that the potassium-packed fruit can assist learning by making pupils more alert.

Constipation: High in fiber, including bananas in the diet can help restore normal bowel action, helping to overcome the problem without resorting to laxatives.

Hangovers: One of the quickest ways of curing a hangover is to make a banana milkshake, sweetened with honey. The banana calms the stomach and, with the help of the honey, builds up depleted blood sugar levels, while the milk soothes and re-hydrates your system.

Heartburn: Bananas have a natural antacid effect in the body, so if you suffer from heartburn, try eating a banana for soothing relief.

Morning Sickness: Snacking on bananas between meals helps to keep blood sugar levels up and avoid morning sickness.

Mosquito bites: Before reaching for the insect bite cream, try rubbing the affected area with the inside of a banana skin. Many people find it amazingly successful at reducing swelling and irritation.

Nerves: Bananas are high in B vitamins that help calm the nervous system.

Overweight and at work? Studies at the Institute of Psychology in Austria found pressure at work leads to gorging on comfort food like chocolate and crisps. Looking at 5,000 hospital patients, researchers found the most obese were more likely to be in high-pressure jobs. The report concluded that, to avoid panic-induced food cravings, we need to control our blood sugar levels by snacking on high carbohydrate foods every two hours to keep levels steady.

Ulcers: The banana is used as the dietary food against intestinal disorders because of its soft texture and smoothness. It is the only raw fruit that can be eaten without distress in over-chronicler cases. It also neutralizes over-acidity and reduces irritation by coating the lining of the stomach.

Temperature control: Many other cultures see bananas as a "cooling" fruit t hat can lower both the physical and emotional temperature of expectant mothers. In Thailand, for example, pregnant women eat bananas to ensure their baby is born with a cool temperature.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): Bananas can help SAD sufferers because they contain the natural mood enhancer, tryptophan.

Smoking: Bananas can also help people trying to give up smoking. The B6, B12 they contain, as well as the potassium and magnesium found in them, help the body recover from the effects of nicotine withdrawal.

Stress: Potassium is a vital mineral, which helps normalize the heartbeat, sends oxygen to the brain and regulates your body's water balance. When we are stressed, our metabolic rate rises, thereby reducing our potassium levels. These can be rebalanced with the help of a high-potassium banana snack.

Strokes: According to research in "The New England Journal of Medicine," eating bananas as part of a regular diet can cut the risk of death by strokes by as much as 40%!

Warts: Those keen on natural alternatives swear that if you want to kill off a wart, take a piece of banana skin and place it on the wart, with the yellow side out. Carefully hold the skin in place with a plaster or surgical tape!

So, a banana really is a natural remedy for many ills.

When you compare it to an apple, it has four times the protein, twice the carbohydrate, three times the phosphorus, five times the vitamin A and iron, and twice the other vitamins and minerals. It is also rich in potassium and is one of the best value foods around. So maybe its time to change that well-known phrase so that we say, "A banana a day keeps the doctor away!"

The world record frog jump is 33 feet 5.5 inches over the course of 3 consecutive leaps, achieved in May 1977 by a South African sharp-nosed frog called Santjie.

The world's largest mammal, the blue whale, weighs 50 tons at birth. Fully grown, it weighs as much as 150 tons.

The world's largest rodent is the Capybara. An Amazon water hog that looks like a guinea pig, it can weigh more than 100 pounds.

The world's smallest mammal is the bumblebee bat of Thailand, weighing less than a penny.

There are around 2,600 different species of frogs. They live on every continent except Antarctica.

There are more than 100 million dogs and cats in the United States. Americans spend more than 5.4 billion dollars on their pets each year.

There is no single cat called the panther. The name is commonly applied to the leopard, but it is also used to refer to the puma and the jaguar. A black panther is really a black leopard.

Tigers have striped skin, not just striped fur.

Turkeys originated in North and Central America, and evidence indicates that they have been around for over 10 million years.

Unlike most fish, electric eels cannot get enough oxygen from water. Approximately every five minutes, they must surface to breathe, or they will drown. Unlike most fish, they can swim both backwards and forwards.

When a female horse and male donkey mate, the offspring is called a mule, but when a male horse and female donkey mate, the offspring is called a hinny.

When the Black Death swept across England one theory was that cats caused the plague. Thousands were slaughtered. Ironically, those that kept their cats were less affected, because they kept their houses clear of the real culprits, rats.

‘Mga anak ni Janice’ multiplied

Mother Lily Monteverde, the Regal matriarch, confessed that she was inspired by the Janice de Belen thriller "Tiyanak" her company produced in 1989 that’s why she opted to do a remake of the film this year.

"That film made money and it popularized the phrase ‘Ang anak ni Janice.’ So I thought of making another film based on ‘tiyanak’ but this time I want to make it more spectacular. After this maybe the next new phrase will be ‘Oh my God ang mga anak ni Rica’ or even ‘Ang mga tiyanaks ni mother,’" she explained laughing.

Pareha ra kanang Showbiz ug Politics, kinahanglan mo himo ka ug hangky-panky para mo sikat.

Pero ang real artist, iyang ipakita kung unsa iyang gituho-an nga sakto, bisan naay ma-igo or masakitan or bisan dili siya makasapi.

So, hina-ut pa unta nga atong tan-awon si Yoyoy isip usa ka artist ug dili Showbiz or Politica.

The procedure colloquially known as a "tummy tuck" is the abdominal lipectomy, consisting of the removal of excess fat and skin. The patient is sewn up and usually back at work within a few weeks, with some moderate scarring. Often women who have had multiple pregnancies receive this procedure to make them feel better about themselves.

We've obtained these photos of a rather extreme tummy tuck, the doctors involved hamming it up a bit for the camera. The submitter has asked to remain anonymous.
