just like gossip, even news items from bonafide mainstream newspapers and other media outlets need some kind of suspension of belief.  how much more for the purported truths in the internet highway where it's a free-for-all and netizens aren't obligated to stand by what they share?  we need to look from afar, use our sense of fairness, check and counter check, and wait for the truth to come out.

for those in the know, it comes naturally to bear in mind that even our local newspapers and media outlets in bohol twist presentations of items according to the outlets' biases.

i do not think well of china because it is fast acting like an 800-pound gorilla in the neighborhood.  and some chinese eat cats and dogs (and so do some filipinos, come on).  but human fetuses?  talking dog...

eRumor: Aborted Babies are Being Sold For Food in Taiwan and China-Fiction!

Summary of the eRumor:

There are several versions of this eRumor.  Some are regarding China.  Others are regarding Taiwan.  They all claim that aborted fetuses are being purchased for cooking and eating.  Many of the eRumor emails include pictures of an Asian man who appears to be eating a barbecued baby.

The Truth:

These eRumors about babies being a delicacy in Taiwan or China are a hoax.  The realistic looking pictures are of a controversial Chinese Artist from Shanghai named Zhu Yu.  According to the Taipei Times newspaper, he has an artistic performance titled "Infatuation on Injuries."  A part of the presentation is a scene he calls "Man-Eater" during which he appears to be eating from a cooked human fetus.  In his interview with the Taipei Times, he admitted that it is a real fetus that was stolen from a medical school and that he cooked himself.

A Malaysian tabloid paper titled Perdana published pictures of Zhu Yu's performance but claimed they were from a Taiwanese restaurant that served the fetuses to customers.  The article infuriated Taiwan, which does not condone eating human flesh, and the government demanded the paper print a retraction.

It should be pointed out that even though this story about fetuses being menu items and sold for food is not true, there are cultures, including Asian ones, that believe in magical powers of ingesting various unusual biological substances such as placentas, umbilical cords and stillborn or aborted fetuses.

Director of Priests Formation or Vocation Director?

It's good to hear that... abi nako mga product lang sa Ateneo or UST ang mga brilliant hehehe... perception lang, of course  :D

perception lang gyod, and more often wrong at that.  i realized that sometimes we mistake confidence for brilliance. :(

QuoteWe were hoping he'd become a bishop by now pero nakasumpaki man sa Cardinal when he was still the rector of San Carlos Mabolo.

i heard about this; one reason why he was changed as rector with someone more malleable. ???  :-X

QuoteCartagenas was my klasmeyt at IHMS. He's a member of the theological forum (mga tang-an theologians sa kalibutan). But unfortunately, last year, he decided to leave the priesthood. Oo he's the first cousin of Rene Relampagos. Last news from him, he's based in Ireland.

oh, my.  what a great loss to priesthood.  hinoon, kun di na gyod madala, why live a lie?  pero arang sayanga, tsk, tsk.

wa ani kahibawo akong sister, who happens to be his friend.  he's so thoughtful.  when our father died years ago, nikalit lang ni siyag tungha sa bohol, unexpectedly, to co-celebrate the requiem mass.  gikan sa barko, diretso sa simbahan; pagkahuman, sakay pod dayon sa barko ug balik.  it was truly nice of him and we were grateful kay nisamot kabug-at ug ka-meaningful ang mass with his presence.

when he was seminary rector, maninuod gyod tawon ni siyag kuha sa akong sister to teach parttime there, to help in the area of homiletics.  mao diay tingali nga niundang pod akong sis aning buhata.  either niunong o wa na gyoy oras sa tininuod.

this development about father aloy saddens me, but so be it.  priesthood is a lonely vocation and the expectations of the flock make it worse.

Close-up of Pope Benedict's pallium (note the pins on the crosses)

For his formal inauguration Pope Benedict XVI adopted an earlier form of the pallium, from a period when it and the omophor were virtually identical.  It is wider than the modern pallium although not as wide as the modern omophor (the vesture worn by eparchs and bishops in the Oriental churches, similar to what is worn by Irenaeus and Innocent in the illustrations), made of wool with black silk ends, and decorated with five red crosses, three of which are pierced with pins, symbolic of Christ's five wounds and the three nails.  Only the Papal pallium was to take this distinctive form. -http://archbishopterry.blogspot.com/2010/06/st-irenaeus-of-lyons-martyr-pallium.html

The use of the pallium is reserved to the pope and archbishops, but the latter may not use it until, on petition they have received the permission of the Holy See.

Bishops sometimes receive the pallium as a mark of special favour, but it does not increase their powers or jurisdiction nor give them precedence.  The pope may use the pallium at any time.  Others, even archbishops, may use it only in their respective dioceses, and there only on the days and occasions designated in the "Pontificale" (Christmas, the Circumcision, and other specified great feasts; during the conferring of Holy orders, the consecration of abbots, etc.), unless its use is extended by a special privilege. -Catholic Encyclopedia, http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/11427a.htm

what is a pallium?  i got curious, so...

Form and use of the modern pallium

The modern pallium is a circular band about two inches wide, worn about the neck, breast, and shoulders, and having two pendants, one hanging down in front and one behind. The pendants are about two inches wide and twelve inches long, and are weighted with small pieces of lead covered with black silk.

The remainder of the pallium is made of white wool, part of which is supplied by two lambs presented annually as a tax by the Lateran Canons Regular to the Chapter of St. John on the feast of St. Agnes, solemnly blessed on the high altar of that church after the pontifical Mass, and then offered to the pope.

The ornamentation of the pallium consists of six small black crosses â€" one each on the breast and back, one on each shoulder, and one on each pendant. The crosses on the breast, back, and left shoulder are provided with a loop for the reception of a gold pin set with a precious stone. The pallium is worn over the chasuble. -Catholic Encyclopedia, http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/11427a.htm

fr john du was in cebu (i can't exactly recall the exact term of his function, but it had something to do with formation and vocation) before his palo assignment.  i understand he's one of the more brilliant priests in the archdiocese, with some managerial skills to boot.

cebu also has another brilliant priest, a boholano, loon priest father aloysius cartagenas, a first cousin, if i'm not mistaken, of congressman rene relampagos.

Two 3,300-year-old twin obelisks once marked the entrance to the Luxor Temple.  Muhammad Ali Pasha, the Wāli and self-proclaimed Khedive of Egypt, offered the two obelisks to France as a gift in 1829.

In August 1832, the French paddle ship Sphinx sailed to Alexandria to rendezvous there with the barge Louqsor, which was to load the Luxor Obelisk and bring it to Paris.  Sphinx then towed Louqsor back to France.  The ships departed on 1 April 1833 and reached Toulon on 10 May.  The ships arrived at Cherbourg on 12 August 1833.

The first obelisk arrived in Paris on December 21, 1833.  Three years later, on October 25, 1836, King Louis-Philippe of France had it placed in the center of Place de la Concorde.

The other obelisk remained on location in Egypt.  In the 1990s, President François Mitterrand, as a symbolic gesture, officially renounced any French claim to the second obelisk. (wikipedia)

weird.  can't a man change his mind?  or postpone his decision?  the fact is they were still legally married, at least on paper.  and courts are so concerned with documents.
#32688
why?  does this still need a court hearing?  can't a notary simply notarize a mutual agreement the same way he notarizes a sale?
#32689
was this a written consent?  this is rather difficult because a sin is no sin only because someone agreed to it.  but then i have to admit that legal laws may have variants from church laws.  be that as it may (naks, mora na man kog sinultihan ug lawyer), it's rather awkward to say to one's spouse, "okay, let's sin together, jointly and severally".  ::)

seaweed farming in the philippines:

#32694
The largest producer of industrial carrageenan currently is the Philippines, where cultivated seaweed produces about 80% of the world supply.  The most commonly used sources are E. cottonii (Kappaphycus alvarezii, K.striatum) and E. spinosum (Eucheuma denticulatum), which together provide about three-quarters of the world production.  These grow from the sea surface to a depth of about 2 metres.  The seaweed is normally grown on nylon lines strung between bamboo floats, and it is harvested after three months or so, when each plant weighs approximately 1 kg. (wikipedia)

carageenan raw material

Carrageenans or carrageenins are a family of linear sulfated polysaccharides that are extracted from red seaweeds. There are several varieties of carrageen used in cooking and baking. Kappa-carrageenan is used mostly in breading and batter due to its gelling nature. Lambda carrageenan is a non-gelling variety that assists in binding, retaining moisture, and in contributing to viscosity in sweet doughs. Iota carrageenan is used primarily in fruit applications and requires calcium ions to develop a heat-reversible and flexible gel. (wikipedia)

not only is this a dish, this is also the raw material for gelatin and the coating of medicinal capsules and pills, especially the red variety.

no question, it's a lot easier to let go of a mini-van than a live chicken.

come on, potential buyers of this mini-van.  believe me, a mini-van such as this is reliable for city driving, like getting kids to and from school.  it can even go where angels fear to tread.  driving it is like raising the middle finger to all those gas-guzzling suvs, which are due for repossession by banks anyway because loans for their acquisition went unpaid. ;D

what else was there to do but to let go?

former male officemates who used to come only to look at my fighting cocks came as a group, in a truck.  it was needed to transport the chicken coops as well.  if i must give away my pets, everything might as well go, including their cages, medicines, feeders, everything.  just don't slaughter them, please, i said through tears.

on that day, i promised never to raise chickens again, ever.

the day came when i had to leave everything behind.  i can take along the dogs, but the fighting cocks were out of the question.  by then, they numbered about 25 fully grown fighting cocks and some female chickens.  it was a terrible feeling.  i didn't want to leave such wonderful live things.

my older sister came to talk me out of my doldrums.  just imagine if you keep on having those chickens; one day this whole province will be filled with them, she said.

a nun of my alma mater sent in a different tack.  let go, learn to let go.
