The hardest part of the test is separating out the female ovaries, one of the deadliest parts, which look almost identical to the male’s testicles, which are a delicacy. If you mix them you fail the test. Around 800 to 900 people take the test every year, with about two thirds of those taking it passing.

take note, parehag hitsura ang female ovaries (poisonous) sa male testicles (delicacy).  soup no. 5 man pod diay ning butete.

An apprentice studying to get his fugu license told National Geographic, "There's a written exam that lasts two hours. They next day they hand you fugu, knife and twin pans.” In 20 minutes test-takers must put all the poisonous parts in one pan and all the edible parts in the other, label the parts with plastic tags (red for toxic, black for edible) and prepare a meal in an artful arrangement. The hardest part of the test is separating out the female ovaries, one of the deadliest parts, which look almost identical to the male’s testicles, which are a delicacy. Licensing of Fugu Chefs

It takes about 11 years to become a full-fledged fugu chef. All cooks in Tokyo that prepare fugu are licensed. They have go through a three-year apprenticeship under a master, take intensive courses, pass a written exam and show skill making about a dozen types of fugu dishes.

The famed sushi chef Yitaka Sasaki told the Los Angeles Times that the notion of fugu making a diner’s lip numb is a fallacy. “That’s a lie,” he said. “If you're eating fugu and your lips turn numb, you’re well on way to being dead..”

Some chefs say that removing the portions that contain the toxins is a relatively simple process. Others disagree. The poisonous parts can vary between different species of blowfish. One marine biologist told the Daily Yomirui, “Even professionals have trouble determining the poisonous part of some blowfish because they differ by type. The same fish needs to checked by more than one person with proper knowledge.”

Chefs who prepare fresh fugu take a live fish from a tank and knock it unconscious with a blow to the head with a mallet. The flesh is cut into thin slices and the heart is removed while it is still beating. Applying pressure to certain area around its gills cause the fish to puff up.

How To Tips / HOW TO PREPARE BUTETE
July 03, 2012, 12:06:03 PM
this is just an offshoot of the recent mabini tragedy of pufferfish poisoning.  after going through these tips, one just might feel better by not following these.  i mean, keep away from puffer fish.  better be safe than sorry.

butete, or pufferfish or blowfish or globefish, is fugu in japanese.

How to prepare butete, the Japanese way
(http://factsanddetails.com/)

To prepare fugu a cook must follow 30 prescribed steps. After the poisonous parts have been removed with a hocho knife the fish is cut into pieces and then washed under water to remove the toxins and blood. The poisoned organs are placed in special bags that must be kept under lock and key and disposed of like radioactive waste in a special incinerator.

#32510
ajaw na lang god mog kaon ug butete god.  naa bitaw daghang bolinaw.  better be safe than sorry.
#32511
As mentioned above, commercially available fugu in supermarkets or restaurants is very safe and, while not unheard of, poisoning from these products is very rare. Most deaths from fugu occur when untrained people catch and prepare the fish, accidentally poisoning themselves. In some cases they even eat the highly poisonous liver on purpose as a delicacy. As not all fishes are equally poisonous, this may not always lead to death, but sometimes give little more than the desired numbness on the lips and tongue while eating and shortly thereafter. However, in many cases this numbness of the lips is only the first step of a lethal fugu poisoning.

There is no known antidote, and treatment consists of emptying the stomach, feeding the victim activated charcoal to bind the toxin and taking standard life-support measures to keep the victim alive until the effect of the poison has worn off. Japanese toxicologists in several medical research centers are currently working on developing an antidote to tetrodotoxin.

http://videosift.com/
#32513
If an ingested dose of the fugu's poison is lethal, as more and more muscles are paralyzed, symptoms may include dizziness, exhaustion, headache, nausea or difficulty breathing. For 50% to 80% of the victims, death follows within four to 24 hours. The victim remains fully conscious throughout most of the ordeal, but cannot speak or move due to paralysis, and soon also cannot breathe and subsequently asphyxiates. If the victim survives the first 24 hours, he or she usually recovers completely.

#32514
Puffer Fish contain the poison tetrodotoxin. Tetrodotoxin is a very potent neurotoxin and shuts down electrical signaling in nerves by binding to the pores of sodium channel proteins in nerve cell membranes. The tetrodotoxin is very stable and not affected by the heat of cooking. It does not cross the blood-brain barrier, leaving the victim fully conscious while paralyzing the remainder of the body.

about butete (english, pufferfish; japanese, fugu)

Fugu is a Japanese dish prepared from the meat of pufferfish. Because pufferfish is lethally poisonous if prepared incorrectly, fugu has become one of the most celebrated and notorious dishes in Japanese cuisine.

How was the Philippine Tarsier discovered?

Tarsiers first became known to Western scientists through the description given to J. Petiver by the missionary J.G. camel of an animal said to have come from the Philippines (Hill, 1955). Petivel published Camel's description in 1705 and named the animal Cercopithecus luzonis minimus which was the basis for Linnaeus' (1758) Simia syrichta and eventually Tarsius syrichta. How old is the tarsier? Dated at around 45 million years, or early in the Eocene period, it is one of the oldest land species in continuous existence in the Philippines.

http://tarsierfoundation.tripod.com/id9.html
#32528
What is the status of the Philippine Tarsier?

The status of the Philippine tarsier is categorized as "lower risk, conservation dependent." This simply means that it is not yet categorized as vulnerable, endangered, or critically endangered, but it could qualify within five years in one of those categories if present programs to protect the species are stopped.

One main reason for the critically declining population of the species is the destruction of their known forest habitats. Years of commercial logging, slash-and-burn agriculture and illegal logging activities have greatly reduced the forest covers of Bohol, Mindanao, Samar, and Leyte - areas in the country where tarsiers can be found. With the destruction of forests comes the inevitable loss of tarsier populations.

Where do we find the Philippine Tarsier?

The Philippine Tarsier is found in the southern Philippine islands of Bohol, Samar, Leyte and Mindanao.

It is variously known to the natives as "mamag", "mago", "magau", "maomag", "malmag" and "magatilok-iok".

Is there only one kind of Philippine Tarsier?

Three very similar species have been described from several islands of the southern Philippines. It is possible that these three species belong to one species which have been developed into three races in the various islands. These are:

    T. philippensis - Samar and Leyte
    T. fraterculus -- Bohol
    T. carbonarius -- Mindanao

The Philippine tarsier possesses various distinctive characteristics and habits that have made it an object of both scientific research and popular curiosity.

Not a monkey?

This endemic species has long been mistakenly referred to as a monkey - "the smallest monkey in the world".

***
What is being recognized as the smallest primate in the world is the pygmy mouse lemur found only in Madagascar.

now i know the culprit of my confusion; the term "smallest monkey in the world" for which madagascar (with its pygmy mouse lemur) and bohol (with its tarsier) have been confusingly credited to own.

i will mark down for life that the "smallest monkey in the world" is the pygmy mouse lemur in madagascar while bohol has the tarsier, no other description is necessary (though it's not the only one that has it, we must admit that bohol's own tarsier has the popularity of rock stars).

Not a monkey?

This endemic species has long been mistakenly referred to as a monkey - "the smallest monkey in the world". The truth is that, though tarsiers are in a taxonomic suborder by themselves among primates, they are more closely related to lemurs, lorises and bushbabies which are prosimians, as opposed to monkeys and apes which are anthropoids. What is being recognized as the smallest primate in the world is the pygmy mouse lemur found only in Madagascar.

The tarsier along with the lemur, tree shrew and loris, in fact belongs to the more primitive suborder Prosimii or prosimian. Tarsiers are probably the most advanced group of prosimians in relation to the higher primates.

    Class: Mammalia
    Order: Primates
    Suborder : Prosimii/Haplorrhini
    Infraorder: Tarsiiformes
    Superfamily: Tarsioidea

an eye-opener:

The indigenous knowledge Pizarras has learned about the Philippine Tarsier that he shares with the visitors at the Philippine Tarsier Research and Development Center are that it is useless and doubly cruel to keep the animal as a pet because it is capable of "committing suicide" in captivity. Just to get out, it will bang its head on the cage until it dies. Pizarras said that he has witnessed this many times. If you frequently hold it in your hands, it will be under such stress that it will grow stiff and eventually stop breathing. Thus, touching the "sensitive" tarsier is a no-no in the sanctuary. It is very inviting to do so, especially since even at daytime, the animal is not easily scared by approaching people and tends to rest on tree trunks and twigs at eye level. (wikipedia)

The study likewise noted that domestic natural gas coming from the Malampaya gas deposits in offshore Palawan that fuels three of the biggest power plants in Luzon have been priced so high. It has been suggested that the Philippine government renegotiate the Malampaya contract to bring down the cost of natural gas.

Reacting to the new record, Federation of Philippine Industries (FPI) chairman Menelao Carlos said that the prohibitive cost of electricity in the country must be the biggest reason why foreign investments have been shrinking in the Philippines, while it is kicking up in other countries in the region.

The study also found that household consumers in the Philippines pay highest at an average of P10 per kilowatt-hour, shouldering the biggest burden of high electric rates. In other Asian countries, rates for commercial establishments are highest. (EHL)

Besides Japan, subjected to the study were the utility companies in Thailand, Malaysia, South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore and Indonesia.

A similar study made by Meralco using the figures in the last quarter of 2008 indicated that until that year, the Philippines was still slightly behind Japan in electric rates.

The disparity in rates between the Philippines and most countries in the rest of Asia was so big that with the exception of Japan and Singapore, what consumers pay elsewhere is just the equivalent of the generation charges that consumers in the Philippines pay. This averages P5 a kilowatt-hour.

The high cost of electricity in the Philippines was traced by the group to the fact that all costs - from producing power to distribution and taxes â€" are passed on to consumers.

for starters, an "old" news item...

Philippines has most expensive electricity in Asia

February 23, 2011
http://www.mb.com.ph/

MANILA, Philippines â€" The Philippines has gained a new record, that of having the most expensive electricity in the whole of Asia.

The new record was reported by the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) to the power and energy committee of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) chaired by Jose Alejandro during a recent meeting.

The committee quoted a study made last October by the International Energy Consultants, an independent think-tank which allowed the power distributor to borrow the result of said study.

The study had shown that with average retail rate of electricity of 18.1 US cents per kilowatt-hour in the Philippines, it has eased out Japan at the top of having the most expensive electricity in Asia. As of the same month last year, electric rates in Japan were at 17.9 US centers per kilowatt-hour.

veco in cebu always had higher charges compared to meralco in manila, per my experience.  i've heard cebuanos complain though that some foreign businesses avoid cebu because of its steep power rates.  i cannot compare the rate of boheco in bohol as i'm not knowledgeable about it.

meanwhile, it is claimed that the philippines has the highest electric rate charges in asia.  i intend to explore the web to find out if this is true.
#32552
in boheco's case, or in veco's, i believe no regional development council (RDC) meeting will change this.  the most that one can expect is to have a thorough explanation but no change in the billing amount, and an opportunity for politicians to show that they care about their constituents.
#32553
there's a lot to be angry about in these details (we pay for system loss?  whose fault is it when we have nothing to do with their operational loss?).  but i guess this increase is all over, with the imprimatur of malacanang.
#32554
bohol is not alone.  and the reason is the same.

meralco in manila has an increase of 0.71 per kwh, veco in cebu, 1.00 per kwh.  meralco bothered to issue flyers in its last billing explaining the increase in tagalog.  the highlights:

1) this increase in the generation charge was caused by the increase in the rate of the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) because of the unavailability of Sual and Pagbilao power plant, two of the biggest and cheapest source of electric power

(are there also newly unavailable sources of electric power in cebu, or bohol for that matter?)

2) the generation charge is being collected by meralco for the power producers that sell at the WESM, independent power producers (IPPs), and the National Power Corp. (NPC)

the components of the .71 per kwh increase is broken down as follows (on the backside of the leaflet):

generation                           PhP 0.54
transmission                              0.08
meralco distribution                               NO INCREASE (caps theirs, not mine)
taxes                                         0.06
others (subsidy/system loss)       0.03

total                                    PhP 0.71

reality check: the "mozart of poetry", 1996 nobel laureate wisÅ,awa szymborska-wÅ,odek (1923 â€" 2012) has a poem about the tarsier.  excerpt:

I am a tarsierâ€"the father and grandfather of tarsiers
a tiny creature, nearly half of something,
yet nonetheless a whole no less than others,
so light that twigs spring up beneath my weight
and might have lifted me to heaven long ago
if I hadn’t had to fall
time and again
like a stone lifted from hearts
grown oh so sentimental:
I, a tarsier,
know well how essential it is to be a tarsier.

as a once-a-year traveler most of her life, it would be safe to assume that szymborska may have gone to madagascar, but not to bohol.  either that, or she must have read national geographic. ;D

a standout comment:

I think the photos are a motley collection of still images from TV dramas with a few possible real photos of condemned prisoners. It is apparent from the lighting and the artificial electric chair that the pictures of the woman in a red dress are staged, probably from a drama or a movie. The photo of the woman in a blue suit, followed by two attractive guards, looks very much like an entertainment still shot, too. The image of the bound women lined up in front of poles looks peculiar. The women look more like other images of Chinese prisoners awaiting execution, but why so many young women and not enough poles? Other group execution images usually show an assortment of young and old, male and female.

I googled the cited source, a 2005 story in the Heilongjiang Crime Report about a woman condemned to die for killing her boyfriend. The woman in jeans and a white t-shirt being escorted by a guard is supposedly the woman in the story, which claims that the woman was shot and while being transported to the crematorium, she sat up. Her parents begged for mercy, but the woman was executed again. I could not find the original story itself, only BBS and blog posts dating from November 2008.

If there were a Chinese Scopes, it would likely pronounce most of these photos fake and the story about the woman executed twice an urban myth. Sonagi, June 7, 2009

I asked my girlfriend (who is Chinese) about this and she said it is common to allow people. especially women, to look and dress the way they want before being executed. She said it was partly for the same reason we afford the condemned a “last meal” of their own request in Western countries (a last act of compassion for those who are about to die), and partly for their families, who are given these photos. Tony Hellmann, June 7, 2009

I doubt that the one girl is in an electric chair, because the chair itself is far too flimsy to stand the forces generated in an electrocution and has no restraints or electrodes. Also as stated above there is no history of electrocution in China.
Photos I have of verifiable female executions in China do seem to show the women are allowed to dress well. This would make sense in the days when they would be condemned at public sentencing rallies and then taken straight to execution (by shooting)
I do not know whether this practice still continues and whether it has been used in the provinces and cities where lethal injection has replaced shooting. Richard Clark, June 7, 2009

some comments on james turnbull's article:

I wasn’t aware they did electrocution either. They most commonly use firing squad, and used to charge the relatives of the deceased for the cost of the bullet. It’s hard to be sure how real those photo’s are, as security around such sensitive issues in China would be so strong no journalist would ever be allowed to photograph such clear, accurate shots, and I can’t see why the government would need to either. Although, having lived in China, I can confirm that it is a pretty messed up place in many ways and it is possible that these are real shots! Rich, June 7, 2009

Thanks guys.

That original, albeit unreliable Yahoo! Korea report I linked to did say that Chinese netizens were speculating that the government wanted to show a more merciful side, and I also think that some of the older, not particularly glamorous photos shown are real…but on the other hand the ones featuring the woman in the electric chair certainly did seem very artificial looking, and that’s the first time I’ve ever heard of an electric chair being used in China also, which would be particularly strange given the well-known practice of organ harvesting of executed prisoners, and even of their skin too, many articles about which came up when I tried to find out more of these photos on Google. Katie Wants Suri All to Herself

Six-year-old fashionista Suri might end up in the sole custody of her doting mom. Holmes has reportedly requested full legal custody and “primary residential custody” of their daughter. Though the couple lives primarily in California, Katie reportedly filed for divorce in New York, which was a strategic move for gaining custody. New York courts are more likely to avoid granting joint custody in situations with feuding parents. Holmes’s attorney reiterated his client’s dedication, saying, “Katie’s primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter’s best interest.”

The Curse of the Threes

Tom Cruise may want to start looking for women his own age this time around. At the dawn of his third split, it seems as though the 50-year-old movie star has fallen victim to the curse of the threes. His first wife, Mimi Rogers, was 33 when they divorced, so was Nicole Kidman, and, hold on, that’s Katie Holmes’ age! Coincidence?

The Culprit: Scientology?

Differing religions are bound to get messy in a relationship, especially when one is as controversial as Tom Cruise’s Scientology. Holmes’s papers cite “irreconcilable differences,” and TMZ’s sources say the two couldn’t see eye to eye on Suri’s involvement in the church. Holmes was raised Catholic and converted to Scientology before marrying Cruise in 2006, but she’s reportedly worried about their daughter’s involvement in the religion. Suri, who’s 6, is now old enough to participate in what a Village Voice report describes as a Scientology practice called “sec checking,” which is a security interrogation by an ethics officer of the church. The report also implies that Holmes didn’t like what she saw of the religion over the past six years and has chosen the opportune moment to pull out.

Surprise Divorce

Did Katie jump on the fact that Cruise was filming abroad to file for divorce? Just a few weeks ago, Cruise told an interviewer that his greatest achievement has been “my marriage and my family,” and said to another reporter, “Nothing’s more important that my wife, my children.” The film star was shooting in Iceland when his wife of five years suddenly submitted divorce papers, leading some to speculate that the move was a surprise to Tom. While Katie’s camp has been tightlipped, Cruise’s rep has hinted that it wasn’t Tom’s idea by saying that the star is "deeply saddened” by the separation.

Katie Has a Secret Apartment

Katie didn’t go into this divorce business unprepared. Before filing her papers, the starlet apparently either rented a New York City apartment or had a New York property deeded to her by Cruise, depending on whose reported version you believe.

6 Reported Facts About the Cruise-Holmes Divorce

Jul 1, 2012 4:45 AM EDT

The TomKat marriage has been fodder for endless tabloid rumors, from their wide age difference to Cruise jumping with joy on Oprah's couch. Now that they are divorcing, here are a few things that have been reported about the impending split of Hollywood's star couple.

They’ve Got a Solid Prenup

Though the 2006 Cruise-Holmes prenup wasn’t made public, some key details have slipped out, notably the $3 million payout Holmes reportedly receives for each year of marriageâ€"which won’t bleed Cruise dry, who reportedly made $75 million this last year alone. Holmes is reportedly also entitled to their massive home in Montecito, Ca. The document also apparently dictates that the two will keep their individual earnings from the last five years of projects. But now for the child support: how much will Tom shell out for Suri’s famously luxe lifestyle?

Katie filed in New York, where joint custody isn't a divorce court favorite, TMZ reports, but the celeb site adds that Sources say Tom may launch a California counterattack because courts in the Golden State smile on joint custody. The Associated Press reports that Holmes appeared to have filed anonymously, which is legal in New York.

Tomkat married in fall 2006, in what was Katie's first marriage, Tom's third (after wedlocks with Mimi Rogers and Nicole Kidman).

Katie's attorney, Jonathan Wolfe, says it's a "private matter" and spills no cats out of the beanbag. A statement from Tom says he is "deeply saddened."

Poor Tom. He was evidently clueless about Katie's intentions, according to TMZ As evidence, the Web site ran pics of the two strolling hand in hand in Iceland just two weeks ago, with smiles that suggest no impending nastiness. And People reports that just a few days ago, Tom was rattling on about how his best day was one he could spend with his Kate and told Playboy last month: "She is an extraordinary person, and if you spent five minutes with her, you'd see it. Everything she does, she does with this beautiful creativity. She's funny and charming, and when she walks into the room, I just feel better. ... What we have is very special."

Holmes, Cruise divorcing

philly.com/
June 30, 2012

All the celebrisphere is abuzz with the sad yet long-expected news. Katie Holmes, 33, and Tom Cruise, 49, are divorcing, according to People mag and their reps. Reports from the front say she's hired a lawyer, filed the papers on Thursday â€" five days before the guy turns 50 â€" and wants sole custody of their daughter, Suri, 6. That renewed the notion, passed along by TMZ.com, that Katie didn't want Suri to get involved in Tom's Scientology (to which, BTW, Kate did convert).

Until he learns these things, he will write as though he stood among and watched the end of man.  I decline to accept the end of man.  It is easy enough to say that man is immortal because he will endure: that when the last ding-dong of doom has clanged and faded from the last worthless rock hanging tideless in the last red and dying evening, that even then there will still be one more sound: that of his puny inexhaustible voice, still talking.  I refuse to accept this.  I believe that man will not merely endure: he will prevail.  He is immortal, not because he alone among creatures has an inexhaustible voice, but because he has a soul, a spirit capable of compassion and sacrifice and endurance.

William Faulkner

The poet's, the writer's, duty is to write about these things. It is his privilege to help man endure by lifting his heart, by reminding him of the courage and honor and hope and pride and compassion and pity and sacrifice which have been the glory of his past.  The poet's voice need not merely be the record of man, it can be one of the props, the pillars to help him endure and prevail.

Our tragedy today is a general and universal physical fear so long sustained by now that we can even bear it.  There are no longer problems of the spirit.  There is only one question: When will I be blown up?  Because of this, the young man or woman writing today has forgotten the problems of the human heart in conflict with itself which alone can make good writing because only that is worth writing about, worth the agony and the sweat.  He must learn them again.

He must teach himself that the basest of all things is to be afraid: and, teaching himself that, forget it forever, leaving no room in his workshop for anything but the old verities and truths of the heart, the universal truths lacking which any story is ephemeral and doomed--love and honor and pity and pride and compassion and sacrifice.  Until he does so, he labors under a curse.  He writes not of love but of lust, of defeats in which nobody loses anything of value, and victories without hope and worst of all, without pity or compassion.  His griefs grieve on no universal bones, leaving no scars.  He writes not of the heart but of the glands.

William Faulkner: Nobel Prize Speech
Stockholm, Sweden
December 10, 1950

"I decline to accept the end of man."

I feel that this award was not made to me as a man, but to my work--a life's work in the agony and sweat of the human spirit, not for glory and least of all for profit, but to create out of the materials of the human spirit something which did not exist before.  So this award is only mine in trust.  t will not be difficult to find a dedication for the money part of it commensurate with the purpose and significance of its origin.  But I would like to do the same with the acclaim too, by using this moment as a pinnacle from which I might be listened to by the young men and women already dedicated to the same anguish and travail, among whom is already that one who will some day stand where I am standing.

(Stephanie V. Berganio)

Tinun-an gisudlan ug dautang espiritu?
