...as recorded in a letter to his wife in 1965:

"In an unmoored life like mine, sleep and hunger and work arrange themselves to suit themselves, without consulting me. I’m just as glad they haven’t consulted me about the tiresome details. What they have worked out is this: I awake at 5:30, work until 8:00, eat breakfast at home, work until 10:00, walk a few blocks into town, do errands, go to the nearby municipal swimming pool, which I have all to myself, and swim for half an hour, return home at 11:45, read the mail, eat lunch at noon. In the afternoon I do schoolwork, either teach of prepare. When I get home from school at about 5:30, I numb my twanging intellect with several belts of Scotch and water ($5.00/fifth at the State Liquor store, the only liquor store in town. There are loads of bars, though.), cook supper, read and listen to jazz (lots of good music on the radio here), slip off to sleep at ten. I do pushups and sit-ups all the time, and feel as though I am getting lean and sinewy, but maybe not. Last night, time and my body decided to take me to the movies. I saw The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, which I took very hard. To an unmoored, middle-aged man like myself, it was heart-breaking. That’s all right. I like to have my heart broken." --Kurt Vonnegut

"When I am working on a book or a story I write every morning as soon after first light as possible. There is no one to disturb you and it is cool or cold and you come to your work and warm as you write. You read what you have written and, as you always stop when you know what is going to happen next, you go on from there. You write until you come to a place where you still have your juice and know what will happen next and you stop and try to live through until the next day when you hit it again. You have started at six in the morning, say, and may go on until noon or be through before that. When you stop you are as empty, and at the same time never empty but filling, as when you have made love to someone you love. Nothing can hurt you, nothing can happen, nothing means anything until the next day when you do it again. It is the wait until the next day that is hard to get through." --Ernest Hemingway

FACT TEN

The Berlin Wall was a physical barrier above the ground, but what about under the ground? Berlin, like many major cities, has an underground or subway system. After construction of the Berlin Wall, the underground system was operated separately. Some trains either ran purely on the west side or the east side. Trains which previously crossed the border would now go no further than its respective border and then turn back. This was apart from three lines that were used by West Berliners but which went through East Berlin for a small part of their journeys. They travelled through several stations which became known as Ghost Stations (Geisterbahnhöfe), dimly lit and heavily-guarded stations that the trains were unable to stop at. This was apart from certain exceptions: Friedrichstasse Station was situated in East Berlin, but was used a transfer station for passengers to get onto other trains travelling to locations in West Berlin. Passengers could also enter East Berlin at this station if they had the relevant permits (also needed for crossing the Berlin Wall). Bornholmer Strasse Station was a station that both West and East Berlin trains passed through, but not on the same lines. Neither side's trains stopped at the station, and the two lines through it were separated by a tall fence. Finally, Wallankstrasse Station was another station situated right on the border. There were exits in the station, some leading the West Berlin, some leading to East Berlin. The exits to West Berlin were open and allowed people to pass through it freely. The exits to streets in East Berlin were locked. When the Ghost Stations were reopened after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the first people using them found them preserved as they were when they closed in 1961 with the same signage and advertisements on the walls.

FACT NINE

Although November 9th 1989 is recognised as the date of the fall of the Berlin Wall, official demolition of it didn't start until June 13th 1990. Between November 9th and June 13th, border controls still existed, although were less strict that previously. Parts of the wall was chipped away by Germans to keep as souvenirs/sell on eBay. People who did this were known as "wall woodpeckers" (Mauerspechte) Some parts of the wall had been taken down but only to make way for more crossing points. All border controls ended on July 1st 1990 and Germany was recognised as one country again from October 3rd 1990.
#32207
FACT EIGHT

Despite there being a wall separating East from West, there were a number of checkpoints that allowed passage to and from the two sides. The most famous of these was Checkpoint Charlie, a checkpoint separating the American-controlled zone of West Berlin from the Soviet-controlled East Berlin. The guard house for Checkpoint Charlie was removed in October 1990 and is now situated in the Allied Museum in Berlin-Zehlendorf. The last remnant of Checkpoint Charlie, an East German watchtower, was demolished in 2000.

FACT SEVEN

David Hasselhoff isn't best known for his musical talents but for some reason, he is huge in Germany. The Hoff performed his hit "Looking For Freedom" while standing on the Berlin Wall in 1989.

#32209
FACT SIX

West Berliners used the Berlin Wall as an ideal way of getting rid of rubbish. If they had anything that needed throwing away, they threw it over the wall. After all, it wasn't as if they would be made to go over it to fetch it back.
#32210
FACT FIVE

The Berlin Wall was actually a propaganda disaster for the Soviet Union and East Germany. It showed the communists to be tyrannical in the way they controlled the movement of their people and their willingness to shoot at people they considered to be traitors.;)
#32211
FACT FOUR

The west side of the Berlin wall was covered in graffiti. The East side was not.

#32212
FACT THREE

Official figures show that at least 136 people died trying to cross the border. People attempting to get from East to West were regarded as traitors and guards were instructed to shoot at them if they attempted to cross, although not to kill them.
#32213
FACT TWO

The Berlin Wall was constructed as a way of preventing East Germans from entering West Germany. It was not so much a boundary for West Germans wanting to enter the East, who were able to do so by obtaining a permit several weeks in advance. It didn't face much opposition by the western powers as its construction confirmed that the Soviet Union were not planning to take over West Berlin.

TEN FACTS ABOUT THE BERLIN WALL
http://www.tenfactsabout.co.uk/

FACT ONE

Construction of the Berlin Wall began on August 13 1961 as a way of separating the three zones controlled by France, Britain and America from the zone controlled by the Soviet Union.

After World War Two, Germany was split into four zones, each occupied by one of the four Allied powers that defeated the Nazis. The zones controlled by France, Great Britain and America became West Germany, or Bundesrepublik Deutschland (Federal Republic of Germany). The Soviet-controlled zone became East Germany, or Deutsche Demokratische Republik (Germany Democratic Republic). Germany's capital, Berlin, was situated in the middle of the Soviet zone, but as this was the administrative area for the Allied forces, it too was split into four. This meant that France, Great Britain and America controlled West Berlin, whereas the Soviet Union controlled the East. Relations between America and the Soviet Union soured considerably during much of the second half of the Twentieth Century. The Berlin Wall was a symbol of this hostility, a physical representation of what was called the Iron Curtain.

LGU Philippines / Backhoe driver arrested
November 25, 2012, 03:49:46 PM
By John Unson (The Philippine Star) | Updated November 25, 2012 - 12:00am

COTABATO CITY, Philippines â€" After more than three years in hiding, one of the key players in the infamous Maguindanao massacre was finally bagged by authorities yesterday.

Combined police and military operatives arrested Bong Andal, said to be the operator of the backhoe that dug the common graves for the 58 people massacred in Maguindanao on Nov. 23, 2009.

Andal was caught in an entrapment operation by combined police and Army operatives in Barangay Kapinpilan, Midsayap, North Cotabato at around 10 a.m. yesterday, police said.

Andal was an employee of the Maguindanao provincial government at the time alleged members of the Ampatuan clan and their private militia slaughtered 58 people in Ampatuan town.

The police Criminal Intelligence and Detection Group (CIDG) in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), however, declined to give further details on how Andal was arrested in Midsayap town.

But the Army’s 40th Infantry Battalion said several villagers helped by providing the local government of Midsayap with information on the presence of Andal in Barangay Kapinpilan.

Andal had not been accounted for since the day of the massacre.

Initial reports said Andal did not resist arrest when he was shown three separate warrants for his arrest issued by the Regional Trial Court Branch 221 in Quezon City.

The Army’s 6th Infantry Division confirmed the arrest of Andal and said the suspect was immediately placed under the custody of the CIDG-ARMM.

Andal’s arrest came a day after the commemoration of the third anniversary of the Maguindanao massacre, as the government was still hunting down 91 more suspects.

A total of 196 people, led by former Maguindanao governor Andal Ampatuan Sr., have been implicated in the massacre.

At least 58 were killed, including 32 members of the media, on Nov. 23, 2009 when around a hundred armed men stopped a convoy on its way to file the candidacy of now Maguindanao Gov. Esmael Mangudadatu.

The victims were systematically murdered and buried in shallow pits or dumped in grasslands near a remote highway in Sitio Masalay, Ampatuan town.

Andal was tagged as the backhoe operator that buried the victims in their shallow graves.

The armed men, including Andal, managed to bury only about half of the bodies and escaped after sensing that soldiers and lawmen had started closing in.

Several leaders of the Ampatuan clan are now detained and being prosecuted for allegedly masterminding the carnage.

Stratocumulus Clouds

Stratocumulus Clouds are blocks of clouds which appear in waves or blobs â€" usually with patches of light and dark. They can vary from rather plain looking (a typical gloomy day cloud) to quite stunning â€" when they form into rolls or waves. The coolest thing about these clouds, however, is that they are usually the reason for crepuscular rays (the appearance of the sun firing rays from one location across the sky) and the halo seen around the moon at night.

Pyrocumulus Clouds

Our previous list included mushroom clouds which are generated through an atomic blast, but they are, in fact, a type of pyrocumulus cloud (fire cloud) so it seemed better to include the whole classification here. Pyrocumulus clouds are, as you might expect, created by intense heating of the air from the surface of the earth. This can either be through a bomb blast or through wildfires. They often have a grey tinge because of smoke and ash involved in the source.

Polar Stratospheric Clouds

These beautiful clouds are formed extremely high in the polar stratosphere. Because they are so high they reflect light from below the horizon which results in stunning displays of color. They are also known as nacreous clouds which comes from “nacre” meaning mother-of-pearl and it is easy to see why. These clouds are especially rare because the stratosphere is typically very dry which prevents clouds of any kind from forming.

Jellyfish Clouds

Also known as virga, these clouds have tendrils hanging beneath them which resemble a jellyfish in the ocean. The effect is caused by water or ice falling from the clouds but evaporating before they hit the ground. These clouds are often seed clouds for rain storms. While these are rare for most parts of the world, they are not uncommon in desert areas and on prairies.

Noctilucent Clouds

Unlike the similar Polar Stratospheric clouds, noctilucent (or polar mesospheric clouds) occur in the polar mesosphere. These clouds are only visible when the sun is below the horizon and they are composed entirely of ice. They are less likely to be rainbow colored and tend to glisten like crystal due to the level of ice contained in them. Both these and polar stratospheric clouds are good examples of how something simple (like a cloud) can be something incredible merely because of its location in the sky.

Lenticular Clouds

Lenticular clouds are lens-shaped clouds forming high in the atmosphere. Because of their very distinctive shape it is not uncommon for people to mistake them for UFOs â€" especially if they vanish quickly. They make especially grand displays when they form over a mountain top given the appearance of a halo. They usually appear at right angles to the prevailing wind direction.

Roll Clouds

Roll clouds (also known as Arcus clouds) are probably the most frightening to behold. Fortunately if you want to see one of these clouds you can â€" they form quite frequently in Australia’s Gulf of Carpentaria. Despite its regular appearance in Australia, it is still not truly understood how these clouds are formed.

Shelf Clouds

Unlike roll clouds, shelf clouds are attached to a larger parent cloud. But, like the roll cloud it, too, is an arcus cloud. They are often enormous and frequently forewarn the coming of a big storm, whereas roll clouds typically do not precede bad weather. Shelf clouds can falsely give the appearance of being a wall cloud (which comes after a storm) but a shelf cloud usually has a ragged bottom.

Kelvin-Helmholtz Clouds

These are extremely rare clouds and when they do form they seldom last longer than a few minutes. They are formed by a Kelvin-Helmholtz instability which is when there is a velocity sheer over a continuous fluid (wow â€" that is complicated!) Interestingly it is this same effect which causes the curved ripples seen in the atmosphere of Saturn. There is no doubt that this is one of the most beautiful cloud formations of all.

Mammatus Clouds

Like something from a Dr Seuss book, these clouds are named for what they look like: breasts. Immense pendulous bulbs dangle below the main body of these clouds to give them their very distinctive look. What is most amazing is that these clouds appear around the same time as severe weather is about to happen â€" so they are a good warning system. They can stretch for miles and can last for up to fifteen minutes. No one knows what causes these clouds as yet but many hypotheses exist.
