Tonight, the Full Moon Will Look Larger Than Ever - It's just an optical illusion
By: Lucian Dorneanu, Science Editor - Softpedia

The full moon is a natural phenomenon that has inspired many writers and movie producers, as well as ordinary people. You've probably seen at least one bad movie where two lovers kiss under a huge full moon visible on the horizon.

Also, there is a strong belief that the full moon is caused by a series of physical and psychological effects, like people turning into werewolves, vampires and other supernatural creatures. Many emergency room nurses believe in the lunar effect and
say things really get crazy out there when the moon is full.

Tonight, there is another full moon, and it will look larger than ever. But what really causes the full moon on the horizon look so big? Does it really get bigger?

No, it's just an optical illusion. Actually, this is only one of the lunar phases that occur when the Moon is located in space on the opposite side of the Earth from the Sun, and when the three celestial bodies are aligned as close as possible to a straight line.

During this period, the hemisphere of the Moon that is facing the Earth (the near side) is fully illuminated by the Sun and appears round and larger than before, when seen from Earth. This weekend, the full moon will be hanging lower in the sky than any other full moon of this year, according to NASA.

This produces an optical illusion that gives people the impression that the moon is larger that it usually is. That's not due to any atmospheric phenomena, such as light diffraction, water vapors or anything like it.

Actually, it's all in the mind. The mind is responsible for considering things on the horizon as being much farther away than objects located directly overhead, due to the fact that clouds directly above us are closer than those on the horizon.

The brain is assimilating the sky to a flattened dome, because we can't perceive the round shape of the Earth. That's why the brain is expecting something on the horizon, like the moon, to be farther than when it's directly above us.

Since it really isn't farther at all, the mind fools itself into imagining that the moon is larger that before. This big moon illusion was visible last Friday up to tomorrow Monday when the moon will appear nearly full.

Diamond, the hardest natural material

How to Turn Peanut Butter into Diamonds - Scientists prove it's possible
By: Lucian Dorneanu, Science Editor - Softpedia

Peanut butter is a favorite breakfast and snack for many Americans, and not only for them. The food paste, made primarily from ground roasted peanuts, with or without added oil, was first used by the Pre-Columbian peoples of Mexico, who used it as a base for various "moles", meaning sauces.

Now, a team of scientists presented the most recent and spectacular use of peanut butter ever. They have proven it's possible
to turn the common peanut butter into the most expensive gems in the world, diamonds.

The formation of a natural diamond requires very specific conditions, like exposure of carbon-bearing materials to high pressure, ranging approximately between 45 and 60 kilobars, but a comparatively low temperature range between approximately 1600-2370F (900-1300C). These conditions are known to be met in two places on Earth: the litospheric mantle below relatively stable continental plates, and at the site of a meteorite impact.

Professor Malcolm McMahon, based at the Centre for Science and Extreme Conditions at Edinburgh University, said that his team of scientists can replicate these extreme conditions, by squeezing the peanut butter between the tips of two diamonds, thus producing a "stiletto heel effect".

"Obviously large gem-quality diamonds would be extremely expensive, so we are looking at ways to make them artificially," he said. "Many carbon containing materials can be converted into diamond including peanut butter."

He sustains that huge pressure is all that it takes to transform ordinary elements into new materials, thus proving that the century-old dream of the alchemists is really possible.

"Pressure can cause extraordinary changes in all kinds of materials and can create completely novel materials," the professor added. "We are currently developing techniques that will create pressures of up to five million atmospheres, much higher than the pressure at the center of the earth, to find the holy grail of high-pressure physics, the metallic phase of hydrogen."

Metallic hydrogen is obtained when hydrogen is compressed sufficiently to undergo a phase change. In it, the electrons are unbound and behave like the conduction electrons in a metal do. "If we manage to make metallic hydrogen, the next step will be to make enough to study it in real detail, which would mean using much larger diamond anvils, about the size of your thumb, to squeeze it."

This guy won't be able to stop a bullet, he's not fat enough!

How Fat Must a Human Be to Stop a Speeding Bullet? - Extremely fat
By: Lucian Dorneanu, Science Editor - Softpedia

This may be a question not many people have asked themselves, and it may sound crazy, too. But in theory, if a human being were covered in a layer of fat thick enough, a bullet could be stopped from reaching vital parts of the body.

The Cavendish Laboratory at the University of Cambridge really performed such a test for The Naked Scientist website,
where they attempted to calculate exactly how fat should a man, or woman, be in order to be able to be shot and live to tell the tale.

The degree of resistance of a material depends on the chemical compounds it's made of, how they are layered, the caliber and composition of the bullet, the powder load of the cartridge (which affects its speed), and other factors, such as weather.

Mostly, the main effective way of stopping projectiles from penetrating a person's body is to diffuse the bullet's impulse energy, so that the final impact causes little or no damage at all. That means you have to find a way to absorb the bullet's energy once it's been shot from a gun.

The fatty (or adipose) tissue is the human body's means of storing metabolic energy over extended periods of time. In fact, fats in the body are nature's way of insulating body organs against shock, among other functions. But scientists really wanted to know how thick the layer of fat must be to completely dissipate the impact energy of a bullet.

For this, they used a perspex tube which was filled with gelatin, having a density similar to fat, much like the ballistic gel used to create molds of human bodies for various testing. A bullet was fired at the 36 centimeters (1.1 ft) thick gelatin tube, from a gas gun, a chamber filled with high pressure helium, that expands extremely rapidly forcing the bullet out of the barrel at supersonic speeds.

The speed of the bullet was recorded at around 500 m/s (1600 ft/s). The exit speed was calculated at 180 m/s (550 ft/s). The result is disappointing for all Superman wannabes. A person would have to have a layer of fat at least 72 centimeters (2.2 ft) thick to be able to take a bullet and live.

So it's better to just use a bulletproof vest if you want to get into a shooting and get out of it alive.

7 Facts About Lightning - Scientific oddities about this natural phenomenon
By: Lucian Dorneanu, Science Editor - Softpedia

Beautiful lightning

First, let's see what you did know about lightning. You probably know that it's an atmospheric discharge of electricity, occurring during rain storms. You're right. Now let's see if you also knew this:

1 - Lightning can form without rain storms.

Yes, it's true. Lightning can also occur during volcanic eruptions or dust storms, and doesn't really require massive cloud formations. Lightning struck the Apollo 12 soon after takeoff, and has struck soon after thermonuclear explosions. Even extremely large volcanic eruptions can trigger lightning, due to the gases and solid material they eject high into the atmosphere.

2 - Lightning can form on other planets

While it's true that it cannot form in the vacuum of space, requiring the electrical breakdown of gas, lightning has been spotted in the atmospheres of planets like Venus and Jupiter. On the gas giant, it can be 100 times more powerful, though 15 times less frequent, than on Earth.

3 - Lightning can and does strike the same place twice

In fact, lightning favors certain
spots, particularly high locations, like trees and buildings. The Empire State Building is struck by lightning on average 23 times each year, and was once struck 8 times in 24 minutes. Actually, most lightning strikes are made up of multiple individual strokes, meaning that what we see as a pulsating lightning actually consists of three or four different strokes following the same pathway.

4 - Lightning can strike from ground to the clouds

Also true. Called positive lightning, this type makes up less than 5% of all lightning. It forms when cloud tops become positively charged and the ground is negatively charged. When the tension is high enough, electrons from the ground will "climb" to the top of the cloud, forming an inverted lightning. They usually carry about ten times as much current as a bolt of negative lightning, the "normal" one.

5 - Lightning can appear as a sphere

There are many historical accounts of spherical lightnings, or "ball lightnings". A ball lightning has the strange tendency to float (or hover) in the air and take on a ball-like appearance. Many witnesses reported them as being red to yellow in color, sometimes transparent, and some containing radial filaments or sparks. Other colors, such as blue or white occur as well. Recent laboratory experiments are just beginning to shed light on the nature of ball lightning, a phenomenon that has baffled scientists for centuries.

6 - What is the thunder?

The thunder is the noise heard after the lightning occurred. It's actually an explosion of the air molecules in the discharge channel, a rapid expansion caused by the electrical discharge. The rolling and gradually dissipating rumble of thunder is caused by the time delay of sound coming from different portions of a long stroke.

7 - Can a lightning strike out of the blue?

Yes, a lightning can really strike without a thunderstorm being present in the area. This is not the type of lightning previously mentioned, it's actually a weather phenomenon that scientists dubbed as ''bolt from the blue'' or ''dry lightning'' because it falls from clear, blue skies.

David Canales, 41, of West Miami-Dade, US, was killed last week after a lightning came apparently out of nowhere, struck a tree nearby and then the unfortunate man. This unusual lightning packs a bigger, deadlier punch and forms differently, being able to carry as much as 10 times the current, is hotter and lasts longer.

So, with lightning striking the Earth around 100 times every second, on average, this is one of nature's deadliest forces, that may unintentionally affect our life in dramatic ways, and can even bring it to an abrupt end.

philippine economy is not an isolated system. most OFW are in the arab region. war in that area means job lay offs. workers have to go home. while this is happening, the cost of oil and consequently, of commodities would go up. simple economics, no income, but ongoing outlay for daily needs...mosamot ug kapurdoy and pinoy!

there is impending tension in the east asia region with north korea acting up. its a no brainer, china has been known to side with north korea partly because it is afraid of the possible large influx of refugees into china once war breaks out. and besides it has been known that china is anti america and anti japan. on the other side, it's japan and america which are buddies. where does that leave the philippines? in the gutter!

really, this is all scary....mao nang karon palang andam andam nako ug walay lotionay, way pamahaw-ay, gamay ug kaon, aron dili maglisod ug adjust inig abot sa giyera!

see mike, you are making me more paranoid than i already am...this is not healthy

kami baya dire sa middle east kay ganahan gyud mi naay war kay mosaka pagkalit ang dollar...pag abot nako dire sa riyadh last 2002 during the 2nd gulf war 1$ = 55 pesos...karon na wala nay war, 1$= 46 pesos...sad but true...

Love Talk / 16 signs you love someone...
June 29, 2007, 06:40:25 PM
SIXTEEN:

When you're on the phone with them late
at night and they hang up, you still
miss them even when it was just two
minutes ago.

FIFTEEN:

You read their Texts and IMs Over and
over again.

FOURTEEN:

You walk really slow when you're with
them.

THIRTEEN:

You feel shy whenever they're around.

ELEVEN:

When you think about them, your heart
beats faster but slower at the same
time.

TEN:

You smile when you hear their voice.

NINE:

When you look at them, you can't see
the other people around you, you just
see him/her.

EIGHT:

You start listening to slow songs
while thinking about them.

SEVEN:

They're all you think about.

SIX:

You get high just from their scent.

FIVE:

You realize you're always smiling when
you're looking at them.

FOUR:

You would do anything for them, just
to see them.

THREE:

While reading this, there was one
person on your mind this whole time.

TWO:

You were so busy thinking about that
person, you didnt notice number twelve
was missing

ONE:

You just scrolled up to check & are
now silently laughing at yourself.
