House Plants That Purify Air

here goes, fr chic.  kalami ani kay nasa diay ang source.

1. Bamboo Palm: According to NASA, it removes formaldahyde and is also said to act as a natural humidifier.

2. Snake Plant: Found by NASA to absorb nitrogen oxides and formaldahyde.

3. Areca Palm: One of the best air purifying plants for general air cleanliness.

4. Spider Plant: Great indoor plant for removing carbon monoxide and other toxins or impurities. Spider plants are one of three plants NASA deems best at removing formaldahyde from the air.

5. Peace Lily: Peace lilies could be called the “clean-all.” They’re often placed in bathrooms or laundry rooms because they’re known for removing mold spores. Also know to remove formaldahyde and trichloroethylene.

6. Gerbera Daisy: Not only do these gorgeous flowers remove benzene from the air, they’re known to improve sleep by absorbing carbon dioxide and giving off more oxygen overnight.

Magnotta pleads not guilty. Appearing in a Montreal courtroom by video link, Magnotta protests his innocence in a slaying-and-dismemberment case that has drawn international attention.

21 June 2012

Magnotta makes a brief, surprise appearance in a Montreal courtroom to tie up a few loose ends in his case before vanishing from public view until early 2013.

The accused body-parts killer had court dates set for early next year and was told he will face a preliminary hearing next March where part of the evidence against him will be heard.

01 July 2012

Montreal police say investigators working on the Luka Magnotta case had information that led them to the city's Angrignon Park. Police will not say where the tip came from.

The park is southwest of downtown Montreal, and a short distance from Magnotta's apartment. Police won't confirm exactly what was found. They will say what appears to be human remains were discovered near the shoreline of the park's lake.

04 July 2012

Montreal police confirm that the human remains found in a city park on July 1 belong to Lin.

07 June 2012

German prosecutors say a decision on Magnotta's extradition could be made within days.

13 June 2012

A Berlin court orders Magnotta be held in pre-extradition custody as his likely return to Canada edges closer.

Berlin state court spokesman Tobias Kaehne says the court decided at the end of last week that there was enough evidence to keep Magnotta behind bars pending extradition.

"That means that he must now remain in custody until a possible extradition to Canada," he says.

18 June 2012

Magnotta returns to Canada on a Royal Canadian Air Force plane, landing at Mirable Airport in the early evening. The federal government said Magnotta was removed from Berlin by Canadian military officials. Ottawa "worked closely" with Montreal police, the Quebec prosecution service and German officials in the extradition.

June 2012

Cops identified the victim in the gruesome dismemberment murder as Jun Lin, a Chinese student at Concordia University.

03 June 2012

Police confirmed Magnotta had been spotted in a Paris hotel. Cops said they tracked his whereabouts by his cellphone, but he'd fled the hotel by the time police arrived on the scene.

04 June 2012

German police arrested Magnotta in an Internet cafe in Berlin.

05 June 2012

Accused Canadian killer Luka Magnotta told the judge he would not object to being sent back to Canada.

Police in Montreal say its likely charges will be laid against a webmaster who posted a graphic video that depicts what's believed to be a grisly murder and dismemberment.

29 May 2012

A torso was found inside a suitcase that was placed in a pile of garbage behind a residential building in Montreal.

A Conservative staffer at the party headquarters in Ottawa opened a blood-soaked package containing severed human foot.

Major crime detectives found a severed hand at a Canada Post sorting facility in Ottawa. It was destined for the Liberal Part headquarters.

30 May 2012

Ottawa police confirmed the hand and the foot found in Ottawa were sent from the same location in Montreal. Police there took over the investigation.

Montreal police issued a Canada-wide warrant for Toronto-born porn star Luka Magnotta, suspected of mailing the foot and the hand to Ottawa. Cops said the hand, foot and torso were likely all related to the same homicide.

A graphic video surfaced on the Internet that appeared to depict the grisly murder. In it, a man kills, dismembers and cannibalizes his victim, who appears to be a naked Asian man. Other videos surfaced of Magnotta killing kittens.

31 May 2012

The manhunt for Magnotta went international, with Interpol and the FBI joining the search after cops in Montreal announced he'd likely fled the country.

Police said Magnotta would face charges of second-degree murder and indignity to a human body if caught.

A close family member of Magnotta's in Peterborough, Ont., told QMI Agency the accused killer was a “unstable” and “a ticking time bomb.”

i know i cannot stomach his online posts of his video of suffocating kittens, feeding a live kitten to a python, and butchering jun lin and defiling his remains (dated 30 May 2012).  so i did not watch these.  it is enough gore to know about them through the written word.

the dismembered victim, jun lin, a chinese student in a montreal university.

7.  magnotta fled canada after the videotaped murder and body dismemberment, which he posted online.

8. an international alert and manhunt, which included the interpol, was set for him.  he was first spotted in paris.

9. the lead up to his arrest crossed two continents and three countries as the manhunt homed in on cellphones, parties and internet cafes.

10. he was caught in a berlin internet cafe surfing for news about himself.

11.  the internet cafe owner recognized him and went out to talk to the first available policeman on the street.  the policeman who happened to be nearby was with 5 police trainees, one of whom couldn't believe that they were suddenly involved in the world's current biggest manhunt.

Heart attack

Taking low-dose aspirin for five years halves the risk of developing colon cancer, according to data published two years ago by Peter Rothwell, from Oxford University.

But Prof Cuzick told Newsnight the most up-to-date data showed "much stronger results".

Last year, research indicated daily low-dose aspirin cut the risk of dying by 66% for oesophageal cancer and 25% for lung cancer. When researchers looked at all solid cancers together, the risk also fell, by 25%.

This year, the team looked at aspirin's effect on the spread of cancer, and found it reduced the risk of secondary spread to the lungs, liver and the brain by "about half".

Low-dose aspirin is already recommended to cut the risk of heart attack and stroke, but there are no national guidelines on who should consider taking it to prevent cancer, or how much to take.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/

University of London epidemiology Prof Cuzick told the BBC's Newsnight programme: "The test is cheap and very easy to do, and eradication takes only five days."

"Bleeding is the only major setback."

"It's trying to identify those who are infected that matters."

The society working with an international team of experts on cancer prevention is expected to publish a statement on the risks and benefits of long-term aspirin use within weeks.

"We will say this looks very important and needs to be further evaluated", Prof Cuzick said.

The society first looked into aspirin as a cancer-prevention measure in 2009, and has reconvened as evidence of potential benefits has grown.

Aspirin a 'no brainer' against cancer after screening

By Susan Watts
Newsnight science editor, BBC News
16 July 2012

Helicobacter pylori About a third of 50- to 70-years-olds
carry the bacterium Helicobacter pylori

A mass-screening programme for 50- to 70-year-olds could cut the risk of stomach bleeds due to daily doses of aspirin, cancer experts have said.

About a third of this group carry the bacterium Helicobacter pylori, which makes stomach bleeds three times more likely - and antibiotics eradicate it.

Research has shown taking low-doses of aspirin can cut the risk of cancer.

Professor Jack Cuzick said screening would make the choice to take it a "no-brainer".

The difference lies in the culture of the Filipino people. It is a soft, forgiving culture.

Only in the Philippines could a leader like Ferdinand Marcos, who pillaged his country for over 20 years, still be considered for a national burial. Insignificant amounts of the loot have been recovered, yet his wife and children were allowed to return and engage in politics. They supported the winning presidential and congressional candidates with their considerable resources and reappeared in the political and social limelight after the 1998 election that returned President Joseph Estrada.

General Fabian Ver, Marcos’s commander-in-chief who had been in charge of security when Aquino was assassinated, had fled the Philippines together with Marcos in 1986. When he died in Bangkok, the Estrada government gave the general military honors at his burial.

One Filipino newspaper, Today, wrote on 22 November 1998, “Ver, Marcos and the rest of the official family plunged the country into two decades of lies, torture, and plunder. Over the next decade, Marcos’s cronies and immediate family would tiptoe back into the country, one by one â€" always to the public’s revulsion and disgust, though they showed that there was nothing that hidden money and thick hides could not withstand.”

Some Filipinos write and speak with passion. If they could get their elite to share their sentiments and act, what could they not have achieved? (Lee Kuan Yew)

He knew well the difficulties of trying to govern with strict American-style separation of powers. The senate had already defeated Mrs. Aquino’s proposal to retain the American bases.

The Philippines had a rambunctious press but it did not check corruption. Individual press reporters could be bought, as could many judges. Something had gone seriously wrong.

Millions of Filipino men and women had to leave their country for jobs abroad beneath their level of education. Filipino professionals whom we recruited to work in Singapore are as good as our own. Indeed, their architects, artists, and musicians are more artistic and creative than ours. Hundreds of thousands of them have left for Hawaii and for the American mainland. It is a problem the solution to which has not been made easier by the workings of a Philippine version of the American constitution. (Lee Kuan Yew)
#31951
on the philippines and filipinos:

Mrs. Aquino’s successor, Fidel Ramos, whom she had backed, was more practical and established greater stability. In November 1992, I visited him. In a speech to the 18th Philippine Business Conference, I said, “I do not believe democracy necessarily leads to development. I believe what a country needs to develop is discipline more than democracy.”

In private, President Ramos said he agreed with me that British parliamentary-type constitutions worked better because the majority party in the legislature was also the government. Publicly, Ramos had to differ. (Lee Kuan Yew)
#31952
The denouement came in February 1986 when Marcos held presidential elections which he claimed he won. Cory Aquino, the opposition candidate, disputed this and launched a civil disobedience campaign. Defense Minister Juan Enrile defected and admitted election fraud had taken place, and the head of the Philippine constabulary, Lieutenant General Fidel Ramos, joined him. A massive show of “people power” in the streets of Manila led to a spectacular overthrow of a dictatorship. The final indignity was on 25 February 1986, when Marcos and his wife fled in U.S. Air Force helicopters from Malacañang Palace to Clark Air Base and were flown to Hawaii. This Hollywood-style melodrama could only have happened in the Philippines. (Lee Kuan Yew)
#31953
With medical care, Marcos dragged on. Cesar Virata met me in Singapore in January the following year. He was completely guileless, a political innocent. He said that Mrs. Imelda Marcos was likely to be nominated as the presidential candidate. I asked how that could be when there were other weighty candidates, including Juan Ponce Enrile and Blas Ople, the labor minister. Virata replied it had to do with “flow of money; she would have more money than other candidates to pay for the votes needed for nomination by the party and to win the election. He added that if she were the candidate, the opposition would put up Mrs. Cory Aquino and work up the people’s feelings. He said the economy was going down with no political stability. (Lee Kuan Yew)
#31954
As soon as all our aides left, I went straight to the point, that no bank was going to lend him any money. They wanted to know who was going to succeed him if anything were to happen to him; all the bankers could see that he no longer looked healthy. Singapore banks had lent US$8 billion of the US$25 billion owing. The hard fact was they were not likely to get repayment for some 20 years. He countered that it would be only eight years. I said the bankers wanted to see a strong leader in the Philippines who could restore stability, and the Americans hoped the election in May would throw up someone who could be such a leader.

I asked whom he would nominate for the election. He said Prime Minister Cesar Virata. I was blunt. Virata was a nonstarter, a first-class administrator but no political leader; further, his most politically astute colleague, defense minister Juan Ponce Enrile, was out of favour. Marcos was silent, then he admitted that succession was the nub of the problem. If he could find a successor, there would be a solution. As I left, he said, “You are a true friend.” I did not understand him. It was a strange meeting. (Lee Kuan Yew)
#31955
Shortly afterward, in February 1984, Marcos met me in Brunei at the sultanate’s independence celebrations. He had undergone a dramatic physical change. Although less puffy than he had appeared on television, his complexion was dark as if he had been out in the sun. He was breathing hard as he spoke, his voice was soft, eyes bleary, and hair thinning. He looked most unhealthy. An ambulance with all the necessary equipment and a team of Filipino doctors were on standby outside his guest bungalow. Marcos spent much of the time giving me a most improbable story of how Aquino had been shot. (Lee Kuan Yew)
#31956
International outrage over the killing resulted in foreign banks stopping all loans to the Philippines, which owed over US$25 billion and could not pay the interest due. This brought Marcos to the crunch. He sent his minister for trade and industry, Bobby Ongpin, to ask me for a loan of US$300-500 million to meet the interest payments. I looked him straight in the eye and said, “We will never see that money back.” Moreover, I added, everyone knew that Marcos was seriously ill and under constant medication for a wasting disease. What was needed was a strong, healthy leader, not more loans. (Lee Kuan Yew)
#31957
Marcos, ruling under martial law, had detained opposition leader Benigno (Ninoy) Aquino, reputed to be as charismatic and powerful a campaigner as he was. He freed Aquino and allowed him to go to the United States. As the economic situation in the Philippines deteriorated, Aquino announced his decision to return. Mrs. Marcos issued several veiled warnings. When the plane arrived at Manila Airport from Taipei in August 1983, he was shot as he descended from the aircraft. A whole posse of foreign correspondents with television camera crews accompanying him on the aircraft was not enough protection. (Lee Kuan Yew)
#31958
Marcos did not consider China a threat for the immediate future, unlike Japan. He did not rule out the possibility of an aggressive Japan, if circumstances changed. He had memories of the horrors the Imperial Army had inflicted on Manila.

We had strongly divergent views on the Vietnamese invasion and occupation of Cambodia. While he, pro forma, condemned the Vietnamese occupation, he did not consider it a danger to the Philippines. There was the South China Sea separating them and the American navy guaranteed their security. As a result, Marcos was not active on the Cambodian question. Moreover, he was to become preoccupied with the deteriorating security in his country. (Lee Kuan Yew)
#31959
We met every two to three years. He once took me on a tour of his library at Malacañang, its shelves filled with bound volumes of newspapers reporting his activities over the years since he first stood for elections. There were encyclopedia-size volumes on the history and culture of the Philippines with his name as the author. His campaign medals as an anti-Japanese guerrilla leader were displayed in glass cupboards. He was the undisputed boss of all Filipinos. Imelda, his wife, had a penchant for luxury and opulence. When they visited Singapore before the Bali summit they came in stye in two DC8’s, his and hers. (Lee Kuan Yew)
#31960
In Bali in 1976, at the first ASEAN summit held after the fall of Saigon, I found Marcos keen to push for greater economic cooperation in ASEAN. But we could not go faster than the others. To set the pace, Marcos and I agreed to implement a bilateral Philippines-Singapore across-the-board 10 percent reduction of existing tariffs on all products and to promote intra-ASEAN trade. We also agreed to lay a Philippines-Singapore submarine cable. I was to discover that for him, the communiqué was the accomplishment itself; its implementation was secondary, an extra to be discussed at another conference. (Lee Kuan Yew)
#31961
The Philippines was a world apart from us, running a different style of politics and government under an American military umbrella. It was not until January 1974 that I visited President Marcos in Manila. When my Singapore Airlines plane flew into Philippine airspace, a small squadron of Philippine Air Force jet fighters escorted it to Manila Airport. There Marcos received me in great style â€" the Filipino way.

I was put up at the guest wing of Malacañang Palace in lavishly furnished rooms, valuable objects of art bought in Europe strewn all over. Our hosts were gracious, extravagant in hospitality, flamboyant. Over a thousand miles of water separated us. There was no friction and little trade. We played golf, talked about the future of ASEAN, and promised to keep in touch. (Lee Kuan Yew)

from here on, all underscored (or colored) items in these excerpts are mine.

Far from just being a book about Lee Kuan Yew or Singapore’s history of development, “From Third World to First” is also a collection of invaluable lessons in economic development, policy-making, international diplomacy, statecraft, domestic politics, history & culture, behavioural and cultural reform, meritocracy, the principles of pragmatic idealism, and examples of ingenious out-of-the-box thinking.

In it, Lee Kuan Yew himself also describes how he and his team of technocrats were able to reform the culture, mindset, and behavior of a people who in the 1950’s were still predisposed to spitting in public and other unhygienic behavior as a result of carefully-planned behavioural-modification policies and systems which have turned Singapore into one of the cleanest and most orderly societies in Asia as well as well as the World.

we can learn a thing or two from lee kuan yew whose leadership transformed singapore into a world economy player.

Lee Kuan Yew  became Singapore’s first prime minister in 1959, at the age of thirty-five and quickly developed Singapore’s economy through the aggressive invitation of foreign Multinational Corporations by avoiding economic protectionism and creating a business-friendly environment in order to concentrate on the immediate task of job creation for the ordinary citizens. In November 1990, he resigned the office to assume the advisory post of Senior Minister in the Singapore Cabinet and in 2004, took on the title of the “emeritus” role of  Minister Mentor when his successor as Prime Minister, Goh Chok Tong (吳作棟)became Senior Minister after Goh resigned the premiership.

In the same way, the usual rules don’t apply to the rich addict. They have no brakes on their habit â€" no overdraft, no criticism from the hangers-on, no lonely nights on their own. Well, no brakes except the universal one â€" the physical capacity of the human body to withstand poison.

Scott Fitzgerald wrote of the rich, also in The Rich Boy: “They are different from you and me. They possess and enjoy early, and it does something to them, makes them soft where we are hard, and cynical where we are trustful, in a way that, unless you were born rich, it is very difficult to understand.”

The super-rich can maintain the facade â€" there are always a few sycophants happy to share the Tuscan villa, however zonked out the hosts are. Attentive gigolos and gold-digging girlfriends aren’t hard to find; the raised-print invitations keep tumbling through the letterbox. The Filipina maids clear up the mess; the drug dealer comes to you, minimising any chance of arrest.

#31981
But that insulation is only illusory in the end. The non-rich drug addict eventually hits a wall â€" their money evaporates; their friends and partners leave; the squalor and boredom get too much. And that’s the moment they give up, if they are ever going to.

Of course, there are plenty of drug addicts who develop habits without access to Brideshead Castle or a packaging fortune; and there are plenty of Gettys, and Rausings, too, who don’t fall prey to addiction. But, if you are the addictive type, class and money don’t help. For a while, they provide insulation against the logical conclusions of drug addiction. When Eva Rausing was caught with crack at the US Embassy in London four years ago, she was let off with only a caution; a down-and-out would have been slammed in jail. Court fines are nothing to the billionaire addict; criminal silks cheap at the price.

The Marquess of Blandford and the late Marquess of Bristol were supreme examples of aristocrats who liked to mix their blue blood with something a little bit stronger. Only last month, the Marquess of Bath’s nephew, Alexander Thynne, was convicted of growing 26 cannabis plants in his grace-and-favour cottage on his uncle’s Longleat estate; he also had a plentiful supply of Ecstasy and magic mushrooms.

And that’s why the British aristocracy is so skilled at producing drug addicts. Forget three generations: a millennium of well-cushioned entitlement is the ideal Petri dish for nourishing addiction.

The third generation curse hit the Gettys, too. The oil fortune was founded by George Getty in Oklahoma at the beginning of the 20th century; his son, John Paul, became the richest man in America; and John Paul’s son, Sir Paul Getty, turned to drugs.

By the time the third generation comes around, the work ethic has often dissolved, and the punishing combination of too much money, entitlement and sycophancy can lead to disaster. “It wasn’t that he was spoilt by his parents,” says the Rausing family friend of Hans, “it’s just the terrible effect of a great deal of money.”

The sad life and death of Eva Rausing highlights the damage that inherited fortunes can cause

***
It’s hard to draw any hard and fast rules about the connection between money and drugs. But, if a psychiatrist wanted to hunt for warning signs, the third generation of a rich dynasty makes for fertile territory. Hans Kristian is a third-generation megabucks Rausing. His grandfather Reuben, an industrious economics scholar and businessman, perfected the technology behind the waxy, ingeniously sealed cartons that made the family fortune. His son, Hans, expanded the company, before selling out to his brother in 1995, having moved to Britain in 1980 to escape Sweden’s punitive tax regime.

“She came back home to get him to go return with her. Unfortunately, I think the flying did something with her heart. Eva had never gone back to the doctor after the valve had been replaced. I think it was this flying back and forth from California to London that may have cost her.”

Nancy also revealed last night that Eva got hooked on hard drugs while studying at the same American college as a young Barack Obama.

She was at Occidental College in Los Angeles in the 1980s when the future US President was also there. Nancy said: “Eva was four years behind him. I don’t know if they met. She went there to study pharmacology. Her first encounter with hard drugs was at the college.” Obama has admitted using marijuana and cocaine around that time.

Police suspect Rausing may have lived with Eva’s body in a bedroom for a week or more. Scotland Yard said last night her death remained “unexplained”.

Outlining the case, Inspector Marman said: “On July 9 police had occasion to stop Hans Rausing driving a car in Wandsworth. An officer suspected that the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. As a result, he was arrested and his car was searched. Within the car a small amount of drugs were found and he was taken back to Wandsworth police station.

“An authority was granted to search his home address. During the course of the search officers found the apparently lifeless body of a female in one of the bedrooms. That female has been identified as Eva Louise Rausing.”

Deputy coroner Shirley Radcliffe will review the case again in October.

Meanwhile, it has emerged American Eva had suffered heart problems and had a valve fitted.

Her mum Nancy Kemeny, speaking outside her £1million home in South Carolina, US, said Eva planned to go into rehab with her husband in California. She said: “Eva was there. She didn’t hear from him and got worried.

Billionaire junkie too ill for wife murder probe

Cops wait to quiz Hans Kristian Rausing

Gaunt ... Hans Kristian Rausing pictured in May

By TOM MORGAN
14th July 2012

COPS were last night waiting to interview billionaire junkie Hans Kristian Rausing after arresting him on suspicion of murdering his wife Eva.

The 49-year-old Tetra Pak heir has been unfit to speak to police since being taken to a secure hospital on Tuesday with drug and alcohol withdrawal symptoms.

At yesterday’s opening of an inquest into the death of mother-of-four Eva, 48, Detective Inspector Sharon Marman said: “Mr Rausing has been arrested on suspicion of her murder and we await notification of when he will be fit to be interviewed.”

Eva’s decomposing body was discovered by officers in a bedroom at their £50million mansion in London’s Belgravia on Monday after Rausing was initially arrested for suspected drugs offences.

Pathologists have been unable so far to find a cause of death, suggesting she had been dead for some time. Barrister Neil Saunders QC, who acted for victims at the 7/7 bombings inquest, will represent Swedish-born Rausing, Westminster Coroner’s Court heard.
