ENJOYING PETS

Pets provide us with loyalty, companionship, love and affection, as well as the many physical and psychological benefits. The least we can do to repay this is ensure that we keep them in the best of health by following the four golden rules to pet ownership. (to be posted as another thread. - islander)

A healthy pet is a happy pet and a happy pet can help us enjoy a much fuller and more rewarding life.

Educational Stimulus

As well as all the fun elements associated with owning a pet, pets can bring many educational benefits.

Owning a pet can teach a child about the responsibilities of life and mutual trust. By feeding and exercising a pet, children can also develop an understanding of daily care. Children with learning difficulties can also benefit from interaction with pets. One study found that the presence of a dog helped to channel the children's attention and responsiveness towards the therapist's suggestion - in effect, the dog helped increase the attention span of the children.

Ice breaker

Pets have been described as a social lubricant. Attending dog training classes, visiting the vet and walking in the park all provide opportunities to meet and talk to other people. Studies have shown that people walking a dog have far more positive encounters with others than those out walking alone, with the pet often providing a topic of conversation.

Pets can also offer a psychological and social boost to our lives:

Psychological Benefits

Children who own pets are often less self centred than those who do not.

Psychiatrically ill people were happier as a result of looking after a pet.

Social Benefits

Pets provide companionship and promote a general feeling of well being, for example pets in residential homes improve both patient and staff morale.

Pets can lessen the feelings of isolation and loneliness and provide a sense of purpose in elderly people. Having to make the effort to care for a pet on a regular basis provides a feeling of fulfillment.

Preventing Heart Disease

Heart disease is one of the UK's biggest killers, yet it is another area where pets provide health benefits.

One study showed that keeping a pet significantly reduced levels of cholesterol and blood triglyceride (two factors believed to influence the disease). These effects could not be explained by differences in diet, smoking or socio-economic group. This fact, combined with the reduction in blood pressure from being with a pet, may make pet owners less prone to heart attacks than non pet-owners.

Overcoming Heart Disease

Pet ownership proved to be one of the best predictors of survival from a heart attack, according to an American study. The study showed that those patients who owned a pet had a much better chance of surviving for more than a year after a heart attack - a difference which could not be explained by the extra exercise the dog owners enjoyed.

SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE

Promoting Health

A study at Cambridge University found that owning a pet produced improvements in general health in as little as one month. This continued over the 10 month study1. Pet owners were found to suffer fewer ailments, such as headaches, colds and hayfever.

Beating Stress

Stroking a pet or simply watching a fish swim in an aquarium helps us to relax. Indeed, the mere presence of a pet seems to have the same effect, reducing heart beat rate and lowering blood pressure.

Research has shown that this effect is particularly marked in people suffering from high blood pressure (hypertension). The reduction in blood pressure is equivalent to that gained by eating a low salt diet or cutting down on alcohol consumption.

BENEFITS OF OWNING A PET*

For many people, pets are an important source of love and friendship. It is also a well-known fact that pets are good for our health.

It's obvious that we benefit from taking regular exercise when walking a dog. However, it is not commonly known that over the last thirty years, there has been increasing scientific evidence that pets can help to keep us fit and well - pets can even help speed up recovery after major illness.

One of Earth's slowest moving mammals just got a lot faster as Zookeepers in Jerusalem Biblical Zoo strapped wheels onto the bottom of a tortoise. The ten-year-old African Spurred Tortoise, named Arava, received her new set of wheels after suffering from a rare medical condition that paralyzed her two hind legs. While veterinarians worked to treat the animal's condition they were unable to restore the use of her hind legs and therefore resorted to a more creative approach. (08/19/08)

Winky the three legged Mediterranean tortoise has had a new specially designed wheel and suspension system fitted to her shell. Her new wheel allows her to go off-road on boggy areas of her enclosure at Longleat Safari Park in Wiltshire, England. The tortoise was given to Longleat in 2002 after her lack of manoeuvrability led to a decline in health. On arrival she was given a plastic wheel but it wore out and buckled over time as she tried to access rougher parts of her enclosure. "She actually flies about now. It's given her more ground clearance. She's now got off road wheels so she can go anywhere," said Simon England who supplied the wheel.

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Watch out Mr. Hare, this tortoise has a wheel.

A 12-year-old African tortoise that recently had its front left leg amputated due to injury is now moving just fine, thanks to a swiveling wheel attached to his shell by doctors at Washington State University's veterinary hospital.

The 23-pound tortoise, named Gamera after the giant flying turtle of the old Japanese monster movies, is gaining weight and generally thriving with his new appendage.

"I don't know whether he'd pass the hare, but he moves around very well," said Charlie Powell, spokesman for WSU's veterinary hospital in Pullman, Wash.

The nearly teenage mutant turtle is particularly good at moving toward food, and has gained 3 pounds since the wheel was attached, Powell said.

The caster-style wheel should last for years before it has to be replaced, he said.

Powell said the caster-style allows Gamera to move well on both flat and lumpy surfaces like lawns.

The Aurora

An aurora (plural: aurorae or auroras) is a natural light display in the sky particularly in the high latitude (Arctic and Antarctic) regions, caused by the collision of energetic charged particles with atoms in the high altitude atmosphere (thermosphere). The charged particles originate in the magnetosphere and solar wind and, on Earth, are directed by the Earth's magnetic field into the atmosphere. (wikipedia)

On Saturday, Acaba took a break from a workout session to gaze down at Earth as the space station made a southern night pass. With a recent uptick in the sun's activity, including a major solar flare last week, he was hopeful to see at least some auroras.

"Within a couple of minutes, I could not believe what I was seeing. It was absolutely incredible," Acaba wrote in a journal post Sunday. "I enjoyed the show for a few minutes and then felt I had to inform my crew mates so they could also take in the view."

10. Fiction: The Philippine Foreign Minister, in disgust, had walked out of the meeting.

Fact:  Secretary del Rosario stayed to finish the meeting and was steadfast in promoting and defending the Philippine national interest.

In fact, even when his microphone went silent when he first began to speak on the Scarborough Shoal issue, Secretary del Rosario strongly articulated the Philippine position and proceeded to conclude his remarks. (emphasis mine)

9. Fiction: Our new Ambassador to Beijing intimated that one of the difficulties she must deal with in her assignment is a view among her superiors that sees China as an enemy.

Fact: This is clearly a misquote of what has been written. The mandate of the DFA is to reaffirm that we are seeking positive relations with China as a friend and partner and that the bilateral agenda should be vigorously pursued while abstracting contentious issues which should be dealt with separately.

8. Fiction:  “…our strategy is in disarray. After the embarrassing outcome of the Phnom Penh meetings, we definitely have no ASEAN card to play in the confrontational path we chose to take against China.”

Fact:  The Philippines has a three-track approach to advance its interests in the West Philippine Seaâ€"political, diplomatic, and legal track. ASEAN is part of the political track.

The Philippines was able to gain the support of the majority of ASEAN Member States as well as that of the ASEAN Secretariat on the need to mention Scarborough Shoal in the proposed Joint Communiqué.

In all ASEAN meetings and in other fora, the Philippines has consistently advocated a peaceful and rules-based approach in resolving maritime territorial disputes in accordance with international law, specifically the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and has been engaging China in continuing dialogues and consultations.

We are resolute in maintaining this strategic three-track approach.

7. Fiction: “When the ministerial meeting failed to issue a communiqué, the Philippine side bitterly accused Cambodia of, well, doing Beijing’s bidding.”

Fact: We did not accuse Cambodia of doing Beijing’s bidding, choosing to remain silent; other quarters preferred not to be silent.

6. Fiction: Phnom Penh’s strong position against the Philippine position in ASEAN is quietly shared by Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei.

Fact: As explained in item no. 5, this view of the Philippines was strongly supported by many countries, including Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Viet Nam.  Even the ASEAN Secretary-General expressed support.

At the 45th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting, Secretary del Rosario discussed the situation in Scarborough Shoal. The text of the proposed Joint Communiqué’s item/subhead on the “South China Sea” was drafted by the ASEAN foreign ministers and several revisions were proposed to make the text acceptable to all. However, the Cambodian Chair consistently rejected any proposed text that mentions Scarborough Shoal.(emphasis mine)

In the Singaporean Foreign Ministry’s website, the Singaporean Foreign Minister K Shanmugan said that it was a blow to ASEAN credibility that “it was unable to deal with something that is happening in our neighbourhood and not say something about it.” He added, “there’s no point in papering over it. There was a consensus among the majority of countries. The role of the Chair in the context is to forge a complete consensus amongst all. But that did not happen.”

United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton calls for a unified Asean to negotiate with China over disputed territory, she also lauds Washington-Beijing cooperation. She pats the back of Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario who cochaired Friday’s Asean-US ministerial meeting at Phnom Penh’s Peace Palace. (http://www.pinoyprogress.com/showthread.php?p=28896)

5. Fiction: “In the view of some of our neighbors, Manila failed to do the patient work of consensus-building necessary for the association to take an explicit and common position on a complex territorial issue.”

Fact:  Precisely mindful of ASEAN’s consensus-based decision-making process, the Philippines has been in continuous consultations with its ASEAN partners resulting in the ASEAN Senior Officials drafting of an “ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Statement on the Situation in Scarborough Shoal” on May 24. On May 25, Secretary del Rosario wrote the ASEAN Chair requesting that such Statement be referred to all ASEAN Foreign Ministers for their consideration. Several Foreign Ministers endorsed the issuance of such a Statement. One Foreign Minister, in particular, in his June 1 letter to the ASEAN Chair, stressed the “necessity for ASEAN to issue a timely statement by the Foreign Ministers (on the said issue) as our common effort to contribute to the maintenance of an environment conducive in the region which is of interest (to) all of us.”
#31868
4. Fiction: “The very public statements emanating from Manila did not benefit from careful, quiet consultations with our regional partners.”

Fact: As early as 2010, the Philippines has been conducting bilateral consultations with its ASEAN partners on the issue of competing claims in the West Philippine Sea. In 2011, it proposed a framework in resolving the dispute within the ASEAN forum. This process of consultation led to the ASEAN decision to refer the Philippine proposal to ASEAN’s maritime legal experts.

3. Fiction: The Philippines “unilaterally escalated the rhetoric on the matter of contested islets and shoalsâ€"and then invoking the entire ASEAN community as a party to the confrontation.”

Fact:  The Philippines has been approaching the issue with patience and tolerance as we endeavor to avail ourselves of all peaceful means to resolve it in accordance with the rule of law. However, the neighboring country decided to escalate the tensions resulting in the deployment of numerous vessels, as high as 96 at one point, as against our one vessel. The Philippines could not perpetually remain mute over the brazen acts of infringement on its territory and intimidation by a powerful country.
#31870
2. Fiction: The Philippine Foreign Minister denounced Chinese “duplicity” and “intimidation” in the South China Sea, souring the mood at the meeting designed to soothe tensions.

Fact:  The “souring of the mood” was attributed by everyone who was there to the failure of ASEAN to issue a Joint Communiqué, resulting from the Chair’s firm position not to reflect the recent developments in the South China Sea despite the view of the majority of the Member States that these developments impinge on the overall security of the region.

On the reference to “duplicity and intimidation,” the Philippines forged an agreement with a neighbouring country for the simultaneous pull-out of all vessels inside the shoal, which we undertook in good faith last June 4. Furthermore, the neighboring country agreed to remove its barrier at the entrance of the shoal. Yet to this day, the neighboring country has not fulfilled its obligations under the agreement and has maintained its ships inside and outside the shoal, as well as its barrier, in its aim to establish effective control and jurisdiction in the shoal and surrounding waters.

The non-issuance of the customary Joint Communiqué after the 45th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting (AMM) in Phnom Penh, Cambodia expectedly generated considerable reactions and commentaries because it was unprecedented in ASEAN’s 45 years of existence.

However, many of those reactions/commentaries were based on erroneous information. It is therefore essential to lay down the facts.

1. Fiction: There was no Joint Communiqué because ASEAN failed to agree on the Code of Conduct on the South China Sea. “Never before has our regional association been as strained as it is todayâ€"and much of the blame might be put on the Philippine side.”

Fact:  ASEAN had already agreed on the key elements of the proposed Code of Conduct on the South China Sea for discussion with China. The Philippines was successful in having its suggested main elements included to give the Code the substance it requires.

The strain being felt by ASEAN is not attributable to the Philippines but it was reportedly due to the failure of the Chair to gain a consensus. Within the ASEAN framework, the Philippines needed to be resolute in giving primacy to national interest.

WHY THERE WAS NO ASEAN JOINT COMMUNIQUÉ

by Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs Erlinda F. Basilio

I am sharing this article with the Filipino people to inform them of the real state of the discussions during the 45th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting in Phnom Penh on July 9, 2012. I was present during the discussions in the different sessions. I feel it is my duty to present to all Filipinos the efforts made by the Philippine Delegation to seek the unified support of ASEAN to the West Philippine Sea issue, which affects not only its member countries but the region as a whole. Through this article, I hope to present the real picture during the Ministerial Meeting from the point of view of a Filipino, and in the process, correct the grave misimpressions generated by some who were not present during those meetings.

Gingko supplements mixed with aspirin and warfarin also increases the risk of bleeding.

The same goes with ginseng supplements that are taken at the same time as warfarin.

“The chances of herbs and drugs interacting are high. Indeed, 8 of the 10 most widely used supplements interact with the blood-thinning medication warfarin,” Mayo Clinic said.

Other herbal supplements that can affect warfarin include danshen, dong quai, evening primrose oil.

So if you’re currently on heart medications and would like to take herbal supplements as well, follow the age-old advice: consult your doctor.

Some herbal supplements may not be mixed with heart meds

philstar.com

MANILA, Philippines - Taking certain herbal supplements along with your heart medications can be dangerous to your health.

“Herbal supplements can have strong effects in the body, and some can interact with prescription medications to treat heart and circulatory problems, such as high blood pressure and heart failure. Some of these interactions can be dangerous,” according to medical research group Mayo Clinic.

Garlic supplements taken along with aspirin, cloopidogrel (Plavix), and warfarin (Coumadin), for example, may lead to an increase in bleeding.

then i will not think of ever going to this restaurant.  thanks for the warning.

50 centavos ray hinungdan sa lalis.  "ra" lang lagi, pero kay niigking na man akong dunggan morag dunggan ni legolas... it's not the amount, it's the presumption that they can roughshod customers that way...

but there also was one happy little girl whose money was doubled in seconds and her mother who couldn't believe that i went through all that trouble to get my 50 centavos back. ;D
#31883

aguy, gipanan-aw na ko sa ubang mga customers.  uwaw baya, pero i had to protect my rights if not my turf.
#31884
which reminds me... no doubt i love my country, but if there's anything that pisses me off here, it's the fact that we still have a lot to learn about giving back a customer's change.  (the other is elevator manners, but that's another story.)

ROSE PHARMACY, this ubiquitous pharmacy nga bol-anon ang tag-iya (taga-loay kuno nga ginganlan ug rose borja lim) nga maayo untang maoy palitan kanunay kay bol-anon lagi, maglikay gyod ko kutob sa mahimo.  i'd rather buy from MERCURY DRUG kay kamao morespeto ug customer by giving back the proper change of one's purchase, down to the last centavo.  ang rose pharmacy?  purya gaba.  never gyod ko nakasuway nga sakto ang sensilyong ihatag.
#31885
the last time nibayad ko, kuwang ang ilang sinselyo ug 20 centavos.  akong gipaningil, tubagon lang kog "butal, e."  "aba, butal nga, but it's due me," tubag ko.  ang tonta lahi na mag estorya.  "ma'am, intsik ka ba?"  atot.  pahinumdoman pa gyod ko sa scarborough shoal. ;D
#31886
lipay ko karon kay gikan kong nibayad sa among condo association dues ug water bill, gikugihan gyod nakog ihap ug sinselyo, up to the last centavo.  kay ngano laging mag-bill ug bungkig unya di kahibawong maninselyo.  pwes, nibayad kog bungkig kaayo, nalipong silag inihap.  pakapinan pa nakog estorya ug "mula ngayon, wala na kayong problema sa butal sa akin".

In June, Locklear visited China, the first by a command chief in four years.  China suspended military exchanges in early 2010 over US arms sales to Taiwan.

He later said that among the issues discussed with the Chinese authorities was China’s claims over the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea).

While he reiterated that the United States had not taken sides in the territorial disputes, he maintained that “whatever happens in that part of the world has to be resolved peacefully and without coercion.”

Locklear also said that the United States was concerned about China’s maritime claims that would hinder freedom of trade and movement through international waters.

“This is a place where we diverge, and [that] has caused difficulties. So we have to keep working with [China] on that and we have to keep working to ensure that as we disagree on that, it doesn’t lead to miscalculation that drives us in a direction we don’t want to go,” Locklear said. i must admit it's reassuring on one hand.  on the other, i'm afraid we're just a pawn in the game of superpowers.  china's current behavior in the west philippine sea (south china sea to the rest of the world) is more like testing the waters of how the u.s. will react.

chinese thinking could be something like "the u.s. exercises power in the atlantic and just about any other sea, and it is not even a signatory of the unclos.  so why not us in the immediate neighboring sea?"

oh, well, a bully who sides with us in the world's playground is much better than a bully who simply bullies and kicks us off our seesaw.
