Over 2,000 models strutted down the ramp as they went for the “Most people walking on a catwalk” Guinness World Record (GWR) at the Glorietta Mall in Makati on Thursday.

Entitled “Move to the Vibe of Glorietta,” the fashion show aimed to put the Philippines on the map of fashion by making it the “fashion capital of the world” through setting a record.

The fashion show featured 2,255 models aged 18 to 45 including personalities, celebrities, professional and amateur models. Before the Philippines broke the record, the title-holder was Turkey at 1,967 people.

The models were wearing the latest fashion ensemble for the new season provided by various signature shops from the mall. Solo performers like Bamboo and Kyle Patrick also entertained the audience while the models took the ramp.

Meanwhile, the GWR for the “Most people modelling on a catwalk” for multiple venues is held by France according to the official site of Guinness.

There were 3,912 models who participated this event across 52 towns on September 17 of 2011. As of now, the Philippines is the title holder for the “Most people walking on a catwalk” of the GWR. -- http://www.gmanetwork.com/

What's Being Done?

There are a few rays of hope for the endangered mountain gorilla. One is the commitment of conservationists. Inspired by the example of the late Diane Fossey, who was murdered protecting the creatures she studied and loved, has inspired a new generation of conservationists who work with organizations such as the Great Ape Trust, African Wildlife Foundation, and World Wildlife Fund to protect gorillas and their habitat. Another positive development is the growth of eco-tourism, which now brings some 10,000 visitors each year to Congo, Rwanda and Uganda to see the gorillas. Gorilla tourism brings significant cash to these desperately poor countries, encouraging them to protect, rather than exploit, these rare animals. Viewing gorillas as an important revenue source has allowed these nations to strengthen gorilla conservation programs and step up law enforcement against criminals who slaughter and trade in gorillas. -- http://www.ecomii.com/

How Concerned Should We Be?

The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists the Mountain Gorilla as “critically endangered,” meaning the species could become extinct in the wild if habitat loss, poaching, the illegal pet trade and other causes of decline are not addressed. Despite being humankind’s closest relative in the animal world, it is humans that are driving these highly intelligent creatures to extinction. Today there are only 700 mountain gorillas left in the wild. Those that remain are in great danger from slaughterâ€"either as “bushmeat” (illegally killed wild animals sold for food or used for subsistence), or to fuel the illegal trade in gorilla heads, hands and feet. Ashtrays made of gorilla hands provide a gruesome reminder of the horror and waste of the illegal animal trade and the danger facing these great apes.

What Do They Do?

Mountain gorillas live in stable family groups and, though they are capable of aggression, are generally shy and peaceful creatures. Family groups are led by the largest male silverback, who is the undisputed leader of the group  that also includes females, babies and young males known as blackbacks. The silverback leader is responsible for protecting the family, and deciding where and when they eat and sleep. Gorillas spend their mornings and evenings feeding, usually covering only a small area of forest at a time. Groups spend the middle of the day sleeping, playing or grooming (females groom their young or a silverback). At night, gorillas fashion nests of leaves and branches on which to sleep; unweaned infants sleep in their mother’s nests.

What Do They Eat?

Mountain gorillas eat a vegetarian diet of leaves, shoots and plant stems. They will also eat small animals and rotten wood. Adult male gorillas eat about 45 pounds (20 kilograms)  of food per day, and females eat about 30 pounds (30 kilograms).

How Are Babies Made?

The mountain gorilla has no particular mating season, and females usually initiate mating behavior. Females give birth after an eight-and-a-half-month pregnancy, and generally bear just one infant every six to eight years. When they are born, baby gorillas weigh just 3-4 pounds (1.36-1.8 kilograms). Like human babies, they learn first to crawl (at about three months of age), and then to walk, usually at about eight or nine months. Their mothers nurse them for three years.

Where Do They Live?

The mountain gorilla lives in the misty and cold “cloud forests” of Central Africa. One group lives in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest of Uganda, and another group can be found in the Virunga Mountains that span the borders of Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo and form the mountainous “backbone” of Central Africa. Most mountain gorillas are found on the slopes of three dormant volcanoes (Karisimbi, Mikeno, and Visoke) that range in altitude from 7,200â€"14,100 feet (2,194.5-4,297.7 meters).

What Are They Like?

The endangered mountain gorilla is one of humankind’s closest cousins, sharing 97% of their DNA with humans. Individual gorillas have personality traits and quirks and a formidable intelligence that sometimes make these apes seem almost human. They can walk upright for extended periods of time and have arms that reach nearly to the ground. Standing upright, males are about 5.5 feet (1.7 meters) tall and usually weigh between 300-450 pounds (136-204 kilograms).  Females are about 5 feet (1.5 meters) tall, with an average weight of 200 pounds (90.7 kilograms). Unlike monkeys, gorillas have no tails. Mountain gorillas have long, thick black fur that helps them stay warm and dry in the cold, wet environment of their mountain homes. Adult males are called “silverbacks” because as they get older a strip of silver hair develops on their back.

Diet accounts for nearly 10% of all cancers if a lack of fruit and vegetables, too little fibre, too much red or processed meat and excessive salt are included.

Five a day can reduce the risk of bowel, breast, kidney, womb and oesophageal cancers.

Fibre activates the production of helpful chemicals that can stop the growth of tumours in the bowel.

Red and processed meat contain an iron pigment, called haem, that can stimulate bacteria in the gut to produce cancer-causing chemicals.

Diets high in smoked and pickled foods are known to increase the risk of stomach cancer. Salt can harm the lining of the stomach, cause inflammation and interact with a bug that causes stomach ulcers and cancers.

Obesity is a cause of more than 5% of cancers overall. Fat in overweight people produces more hormones than in healthy people. High levels of some of these hormones, including the female sex hormone oestrogen, can stimulate breast cancers.

We didn’t expect to find that eating fruit and vegetables would prove so important in protecting men against cancer.

And among women we didn’t expect being overweight to have a greater effect than alcohol.

Smoking is the single largest preventable cause of cancer, causing 22% of all cancer deaths and 71% of lung cancer deaths worldwide.

Tobacco smoke contains 70 cancer-causing chemicals. These carcinogens can damage important genes, making cells multiply out of control.

Every year, alcohol is associated with 3.6% of all cancers worldwide.

The alcohol does the damage, regardless of the type of drink.

A study by the US National Cancer Institute found that people who both smoke and drink are much more likely to get cancer than non-smokers and non-drinkers, because tobacco and alcohol act together to multiply the damage to cells.

Alcohol may act as a solvent and make it easier for the mouth and throat to absorb the harmful chemicals in tobacco smoke.

A lot of people think cancer is in the genes, but only five to 10 out of 100 cancers are caused by faulty genes alone.

What counts much more are environment and lifestyle factors that damage your DNA, many of which we can change.

This is good news because by tweaking our lifestyles we can greatly lower our chances of ever getting cancer.

About half of some cancers can be prevented by a healthy lifestyle.

Key is a diet rich in fruit and vegetables and white meat, consuming little or no alcohol, being physically active for 60 minutes a day, and not smoking.

In an extraordinary case of jealousy, a Nigerian man - husband of six - was allegedly raped to death by his five spouses as he was paying too much attention to his sixth wife in east-central Benue state.

Uroko Onoja, a wealthy businessman, was having sex with his youngest wife when the other five women attacked him with knives and sticks, demanding that he have sex with all of them at once.

Onoja, who resisted their attack, was overpowered by the women who ordered that the sex march begin with the youngest wife and to continue in that order to the top, Nigeria's Daily reported.

Onoja stopped breathing when the fifth woman was making her way to the bed.

According Onoja's youngest wife, five other spouses ran into the forest realising that their husband is no more.

Village head Okpe Odoh said that the matter had been reported to the police, who have already arrested two of the wives following the incident last week.

The single most despicable crime humanity has ever perpetrated on other animal species is forcing two animals to hate each other and fight to the death. The title refers, here, to dogfighting, cockfighting, horse fighting, and so on. And why do we do it? Money and bloodlust. It is a gambling enterprise, foremost, and only one for degenerate gamblers. Gambling on a horse race is not criminal, not even sinful by most estimations.

But gambling on two roosters fighting to the death indicates a lack of care for the wellbeing of a dumb animal that does not understand why it suddenly hates the animal facing it. These blood sports are crimes against the very minds of the animals. Horse fighting is very popular in Japan, and it’s just what you’d imagine: two horses biting each other’s faces and necks, rearing onto their hind legs and striking each other in the heads with their fore-hooves, all while spectators exchange cash and banter.

Among the most well known incidents of this crime is that of Michael Vick, the American professional football player who was caught and imprisoned for running a dogfighting ring. The losing animals of these enterprises, regardless of the species, are almost always executed out of the owner’s hatred at having lost a bet. Vick personally drowned, shot, and electrocuted over two dozen pitbulls and bull dogs.

1 Atlantis

Perhaps the most famous lost city on this list, we all know of Atlantis’s demise 10,000 years ago, destroyed in one night by earthquakes and a flood. Several researchers claim that Atlantis really existed â€" that the empire embraced parts of Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas. Others firmly believe the Atlantean survivors were responsible for the construction of Stonehenge and the pyramids. According to Plato, Atlantis was ruled by ten kings; the royal palace had hot and cold running water; and the largest temple on the central island was dedicated to Poseidon and Cleito.

Most believers claim that proof lies in the island Antilia, which can be seen on 15th century Portuguese charts â€" supposedly the actual Atlantis that disappeared beneath the sea. Others believe that Plato mythologized what was actually a real event: that the historical eruption of Thera, which destroyed the Minoan culture of Crete, is the genuine basis for the Atlantis myth. Since each researcher firmly holds on to their own theory, all we can hope to do is study the material on the subject, and come to our own conclusions about this riveting topic â€" until Atlantis itself is found.

2 Avalon

Most researchers believe Avalon was derived from the Welsh word afal, meaning apple. It is a legendary island, the place where King Arthur’s sword Excalibur (Caliburnus) was forged, and where Arthur was later taken after the Battle of Camlann to recuperate. In Welsh, Cornish and Breton legends, Arthur never died â€" and according to these traditions, he will return to lead his people once again. Avalon became associated with Glastonbury in 1190, when monks at Glastonbury Abbey claimed to have found the remains of Arthur and his queen. The writings of Gerald of Wales claimed that Glastonbury was in ancient times called the Isle of Avalon. Centuries ago, the area was also called Ynys Gutrin, which in Welsh means “Island of Glass” â€" and from these words, the invading Saxons later provided us with the place-name ‘Glastingebury’.

3 El Dorado

When the Spanish invaded Mexico in the 16th century, they heard rumor of a fabulous city paved with gold, ruled over by a priest-king called El-Dorado, or the Gilded King, whose body was said to be covered with powdered gold. Francisco Pizarro invaded Peru, and famously overwhelmed the Inca civilization with a series of murders, deceits, and dishonesties. He did find some gold in the end, but it did him no good â€" he was assassinated in 1541.

Even though there are some facts supporting this legend, no actual proof exists of “the” El Dorado, and in later years it settled into mythical tradition as a place in the Americas where a city of gold lay. Centuries later, the New World was still being plundered, and its inhabitants murdered, as the Europeans continued their search for the fabled city. Even today, many still believe that the city exists, waiting to be found by the right adventurer at the right time.

4 Cantre’r Gwaelod

Cantre’r Gwaelod â€" the Welsh Atlantis â€" is a legendary ancient sunken kingdom said to have been located in the area between Ramsey Island and Bardsley Island, to the west of Wales. This kingdom features in folklore, literature, and song, and is believed to lie beneath the waters of Cardigan Bay. The most popular myth states that the land was fortified against the sea by a dyke. A prince called Seithenyn, described as a drunkard and a womanizer, was in charge of the dyke, and due to his negligence the sea swept through the gates and ruined the land. Even though there is no reliable physical evidence that Cantre’r Gwaelod lies under the bay, there have been several reported sightings of sunken human habitations, stone walls and causeways.

5 Lyonesse

The home of Sir Tristan, one of King Arthur’s fabled round table knights, Lyonesse is a country in Arthurian legend said to be located close to Cornwall â€" although its exact location has never been specified. It is said to have sunk beneath the sea, just like the city of Ys according to Celtic tales. Lord Tennyson described Lyonesse as the site of Arthur’s final battle, in which he was mortally wounded.

As the legend of Lyonesse’s sinking appears both in Cornish and Breton mythology, it has been suggested that the story represents an extraordinary example of folk memory and the tradition of oral history; it is thought that the story might have its origins in the historical flooding of the Isles of Sicily and Mount’s Bay, near Penzance. Today, Lyonesse is firmly rooted to Cornwall’s traditions, so linking it to the Isles of Scilly seems the most logical step. Around the mainland, one can still find the fossilized remains an ancient forest, where beech trees still bearing nuts can also be found.

6 Hy-Brasil

Europeans nurtured a long-held fascination over a mythical country, said to be located somewhere over the impassable Western Ocean. An Irish legend tells us of Hy-Brasil, an island covered in mist, which can only be seen once every seven years â€" but never reached. Expeditions left Bristol in the 1480s, but they always came back without proof of the fabled island.

In 1674, a captain by the name of John Nisbet claimed that he had seen the island during a journey between Ireland and France. He stated that the island was inhabited by large black rabbits, and a magician who lived in a stone castle. In recent times, however, it has been suggested that Hy-Brasil is actually Porcupine Bank, a shoal that actually exists, and can be found 200 kilometers west of Ireland.

7 Agharti

Legends tell us that Agharti is an underground world, linked to the four corners of the earth via an intricate tunnel-network. Describing a land inhabited by peace-loving and gentle people, who try to alleviate the exuberance of the people living above-ground, the myth appears to be very old.

Plato spoke of broad and narrow tunnels located underneath the earth, governed by a marvelous ruler who sits at the earth’s centre. A few hundred years later, Pliny mentioned people who fled underground after Atlantis was ruined. Some esoteric traditionalists still claim that Agharti really exists. According to these believers, the Atlanteans fled to Asia, where they tunneled under the Himalayas, waiting patiently for the day when they might once again emerge to rule the world.

8 Shambala

“Shambala” is the Sanskrit name for a mystical land, located between snowy mountains, with a golden city at its centre. It has been sought nearly everywhere. From the Gobi Desert to Tibet, Afghanistan to the Kun Lun Mountains of China, explorers have scoured â€" but in vain. Expeditions have sometimes disappeared without a trace. Apparently, one can fly over Shambala in an aircraft and still miss it, as its frontiers are carefully guarded and protected from being seen.

In 1928, Nicholas Roerich, the designer of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring ballet, was told by a lama that Shambala belongs to another dimension, and that only those who are spiritually prepared will be able to find it â€" as it is lost, and found, entirely in the mind. Roerich also met a mysterious lama on the Darjeeling-Ghum road in India, and was later told by monks that this lama hailed from Shambala.

9 Cibola

The 16th century Spanish conquistadores searched the North Americas for the legendary seven Cities of Cibola â€" fabled for their wealth and brilliance. Cibola was possibly related to Aztlan, the land of seven caves from which the Aztecs reportedly emigrated to Mexico. Antonio de Mendoza, Viceroy of New Spain, sent the first expedition to find these lost cities in 1539, after a certain friar claimed to have glimpsed them on the horizon.

In 1540, a second expeditionary force was sent, under the command of Francisco de Coronado. Encountering the Hopi people, the Spaniards were told that the tribe had for centuries been awaiting the return of the White Brother, Pahana. The group of Spaniards explored as far as Texas, but could not find any of the fabled, golden cities. This legend is comparable to the one of El Dorado.

10 Lemuria

Lemuria, or Mu, is a continent said to have been swallowed by the sea, and to now lie under the Indian or Pacific Ocean. The famous Theosophist Madame Blavatsky claimed that the Lemurians were ape-like giants that had the gift of telepathy. In a book called “The Lost Continent of Mu”, one writer claimed that all of mankind has its origins in Mu, which once extended from Hawaii to Easter Island and Fiji. Supposedly, it was completely destroyed 12,000 years ago by an enormous earthquake, and sank into the sea.

Today, the Stelle group in the USA claims to be descended from the Lemurians. According to this group, the Lemurians escaped from earth following the catastrophe, and they have since been guiding the destinies of chosen groups such as themselves.

Top 10 Legendary Lost Worlds

For millennia, travelers have told tales of fabulous lost worlds, and legends of hidden kingdoms. Many of these stories survive to this day. The first tales of unbelievable excursions to never before seen kingdoms and civilizations developed in an era when much was unknown, and all things seemed possible. From Plato’s story of Atlantis, to Mandeville’s tales of dog-headed men, the societies who ingested these legends found no good reasons to doubt their truth.

Even when Gulliver’s Travels was published in 1726, many parts of the world â€" such as Australia, Africa, South America and much of Asia â€" remained partly uncharted. As late as the mid-nineteenth century, “lost world” romances exploded via the tales of Jules Verne, H. Rider Haggard, Arthur Conan Doyle and H. G. Wells â€" even as it became clear that the locations in their stories never existed. Today, sadly, the allure of these romances have faded â€" but the attractive pull of these legends, though dormant, remains in our hearts and our collective psyche, ready to draw another generation towards a life of adventure.

(Sun.Star SuperBalita Cebu)
