You're right, Brod Vince. Ma sakitan atohang dughan kong maka kita ta'g pictures nga nag hilak ang bata.

I don't know how the parents of this little girl could bear to watch their baby being abused like this.
If I was the father, I would have already punched the trainer's face and rescued my baby girl already.
No award is worth that kind of pain / torture.

Maluoy man ganing ta ug iro or iring or unsa ba rong mga matang sa mananap nga murag wa alimaha ug tarong bata/ tawo pa ba kaha nga imong dugo. Anyway, point of view ni naho. What I heard and read of the culture in China and South Korea hasta ang Japan is that parents take pride kung may maachieve ang ilang anak sama nianing sports. Mura ug family pride pud ang prize ani for them.

okay man nang achievement, di ba?  bisan kita mogara tingali kun naa tay anak makalupad, pwera lang nga mahimong wakwak.  di lang pugos ug pug-anay nga morag wa na gyoy laing rason nga mabuhi ta.

achieving, like learning, should be fun.  kun mohilak na ang bata kay gisakitan, wa na lang sa gimingaw intawon sa mama ug papa, what's the point?  sure ko nga kun bata lang pabut-on, parents gyod iyang pilion nungka medalya nga wa pa tawon siya kasabot unsa na.

A surprising number of coaches, even ones who were Olympics champions, are chain smokers. The IOC is investigating reports in China of coaches beating child gymnasts and swimmers.

Many athletes that don’t make the grade find themselves out on the street without an education they would have gotten had they attended a regular school.

The Los Angeles Times talked with a former national weightlifting champion who took a job scrubbing backs at a public bathhouse for ten cents a piece because she said it was the only job she could get. Her education stopped when she was in the third grade and she had no marketable skills. Another weightlifter, who won a gold medal at the Asian Games, could only get a job as a doorman at a sports school.

Former runner Ai Dongmei, who placed sixth in the Boston marathon, sold her medals and sells clothes on the street and runs a popcorn stand in Beijing with her husband, also an athlete, for a few dollars a day.

About 6,000 professional athletes a year retire. About 40 percent of them have difficulty finding jobs. The cradle-to-grave system that used to take care of them no longer exists. Some athletes are promised jobs as policemen when they retire and these promises are often broken.

China Sports Daily estimates that 80 percent of China’s retired athletes suffer from unemployment, poverty or chronic health problems resulting from overtraining.

Problems Faced by Athletes Once They Leave Their Sports

Some former athletes get jobs as coaches or in sport associations. Some start their own businesses, selling sporting equipment or promoting athletic centers. But many have no skills and no more than an elementary school education and end up selling vegetables, laboring in factories, singing in bars or working as security guards.

A local track-and-field coach told Newsweek, "When these kids leave athletic schools, they can't do anything, they have no skills. Local sports commissions sometimes provide jobs, but in the end, many become factory workers.”

Problems with Olympic Training Methods in China

The Chinese sports system is geared for creating a handful of topnotch athletes and discarding the rest. "It is really a factory system," U.S. diving coach told Newsweek. "They go through many, many young divers that don't make it to get those who do."

Sports Illustrated journalists in China said they found "evidence of every dubious Western sporting practice: free agency, bought-out contracts, cult-figure coaches, the use of performance-enhancing drugs, and squabbles over money." Winners at a competition observed in Shaanxi included imposters and ringers who should not have been allowed on the team. Fifty-four winners were found to have false papers and the closing ceremonies were concealed to save face.

Sports Illustrated came across an athletic “trade fair” that resembled a slave market: “Representatives of provincial sports commissions distributed catalogs listing some 1,300 homegrown athletes...Physical dimensions, achievements in competitions and an 'asking price' were listed for each athlete." who sez only a duck is punk?
#31513

A bizarre-looking duck has been scaring off other birds on his canal - because he sports a mohawk and a punk rock attitude.

Bearing a resemblance to Johnny Rotten or Billy Idol, 'Punk Duck' - of the Worcestershire canal - is said to have been terrorising the local birdlife.

Locals say his unique-looks and rowdy behaviour have made him an outcast among his fellow birds in Stourport - but he's proved more popular with residents.

Many have started taking photos of his unusual hair-do and with the school holidays he's has become something of a tourist attraction for locals… not that he gives a duck.

when a child cries, it could only mean that it's not pleasant anymore, di ba?  worse, it's already painful.

our own little is into his fifth year of ballet.  just this year, when i learned that the school's new teacher can execute all the difficult ballet movements but has no iota of real ballet training, i pulled out our kid and transferred her to another ballet school.  nothing personal, i said.  i just want our child's ballet teacher to know when my child's bones had taken enough beating, and your new ballet teacher is no teacher who can tell when.

that's why mora gyod kog gikumot ani nga pictures.  what's in winning, by the way?  nothing but ego.  i don't think more olympic medals make china any greater in the world's eyes.

“I managed these robotic leaps from the sides of the pool, fudging the numbers as I went. But when the coach ordered us to do the same jumps from the 3-meter platform I showed my true colors...I was terrified of heights...I stood for an eternity on the diving board. The coaches were yelling. I couldn’t do it. With the weight of the world on me I closed my eyes and saw the end of my suffering. Instead of taking a leap of faith I literally stood my ground and crawled down the stairs.”

Los Angeles Times journalist Ni Ching Ching wrote:“What I hated most about our training was the repetition. One drill was to jump from the end of the pool, feet first one hundred times facing the pool. One hundred times facing away. And another 100 times head first. Like piano scales, these were the basics of diving, We called them Popsicles, bing quer, because they required a tight, streamlined entry.

At the sports centers for young athletes, children are put through rigorous drills in old gyms on canvas mats in training sessions held several times a day throughout the day and sometimes into the night. The athletes rarely see their families. A coach at a sports camp where nine-year-old gymnasts worked out and lived 1,000 miles away from their homes told Newsweek, "A first they miss their parents. But they get used to it."

In a typical city, every government district is asked to test and assess children from ages 8 to 13, and select candidates for sports schools. Children that show promise move on to bigger government training academies when they are teenagers.

Doctors measure height, arm span, bone density, flexibility and other things to predict what a child will be like in the future. X-rays and bone tests are used to determine bone density and structure and predict future growth.

Children demonstrating exceptional flexibility and balance are sent to gymnastics and diving camps. Tall children are sent to volleyball and basketball camps. Those with quick reflex are guided into ping pong. Kids with long arms are pushed into swimming or javelin throwing. Those with shorts arms make ideal weightlifters. Potential archers are picked on the basis of a test of steady nerves in which they are asked to spread their palm and stack as many .22 caliber bullets as they can on top of one another. Ideal candidates can stack eight or more bullets. Only those that can that can stack six or more are even looked at. Strong shoulders, superior vision and a cool demeanor are viewed as desirable attributes for archery.

China has spent hundreds of millions of dollars on sports academies, talent scouts, psychologists, foreign coaches and latest technology and science. China puts particular emphasis on developing programs in sports that have a lot events and give lots of medals such as shooting, gymnastics, swimming, rowing and track and field.

By the time of the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, China had spent an estimated $260 million to develop a national sports program. That year it won only five gold medals, yet many young athletes had entered the system who would do well in future Olympics. In 1992, China placed fourth in the total medal count.

In preparation for the Beijing Olympics more than 30,000 athletes are training full time, five times more than the number who will actually compete.

Arashi mo fukeba

Watashi wa ikiru
Koko ni sachi ari
Aoi sora

Narration:

Stormy winds of life may blow,
and even rain may fall.
Though the clouds are dark above
life will be bright for me.
I live for you and you alone,
And darling, I live because
Because we have loved.
For here lies happiness
And believe me it's just as glorious
As the blue, blue skies.

I live because of you only
I live because we have loved
Koko ni sachi ari
Beyond the blue, blue skies.

The energy deficiency inherent in starvation causes fatigue and renders the victim more apathetic over time. As the starving person becomes too weak to move or even eat, their interaction with the surrounding world diminishes. (wikipedia)

Early symptoms include impulsivity, irritability, hyperactivity and other symptoms.  Atrophy (wasting away) of the stomach weakens the perception of hunger, since the perception is controlled by the percentage of the stomach that is empty.  Victims of starvation are often too weak to sense thirst, and therefore become dehydrated. What happens to a starving person

Individuals experiencing starvation lose substantial fat (adipose) and muscle mass as the body breaks down these tissues for energy.  Catabolysis is the process of a body breaking down its own muscles and other tissues in order to keep vital systems such as the nervous system and heart muscle (myocardium) functioning.

Vitamin deficiency is a common result of starvation, often leading to anemia, beriberi, pellagra, and scurvy.  These diseases collectively can also cause diarrhea, skin rashes, edema, and heart failure.  Individuals are often irritable and lethargic as a result. (wikipedia)

it turned out that this is a japanese traditional song made popular by a japanese-hawaiian singer in 1962.  our own la aunor, peregrina and wood simply revived this a decade after.

something else about this song:

Koko Ni Sachi Ari (Here is Happiness)
Music by Saburo Iida
Japanese Lyrics by Kikitaro Takahashi
English lyrics by Fred Darian and Joe Van Winkle

the japanese lyrics:

Arashi mo fukeba
Ame mo furu
Onna no michi yo
Naze kewashi
Kimi o tayori ni
Watashi wa ikiru
Koko ni sachi ari
Aoi sora

Dare ni mo ienu tsume no ato
Kokoro ni uketa koi no tori
Naite Nogarete samayoi yukeba
Yoru no chimata no kaze kanashi

Inochi no kagiri yobikakeru
Kodama no hate ni matsu wa dare
Kimi ni yorisoi akaruku aogu
Koko ni sachi ari shiroi kumo

the english lyrics (part of the song):

Here, oh here is happiness
When I can be close to you
In the warmth of your caress
I'm happy here with you
Please say you'll never leave me
I know that it would break my heart
I want to be near you always
For here, oh here is happiness
#31558
so i'm posting two versions of the song here.  i took exception of nora aunor's version, she with the great singing voice, because her particular recording has a rather poor sound.  oh, one can laugh over the accompaniment of our songs of long ago, when the digital age was far, far away.

eddie peregrina, with his nasal voice and high extended notes:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1qWXeal49rw#

amboy victor wood, with his utnga-utnga:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNAGZGsxK-Q#
#31559
let it be said though that i heard this song only in bohol; never in cebu.  it is a haunting song.  the very helpful internet highway finally led me to it.

surprise!  i found versions by nora aunor, eddie peregrina, and victor wood!  anyone with enough sense of 1970s pop culture will laugh at these singers.  yet they were hits.  a perspective of decades and some kind of maturity make one realize that today's laughingstock (as in "bakya") is tomorrow's legacy.  who can say?
#31560
so once again my curiosity about this song was fanned.  luckily, the best friend of my banana republic is a walking "song hits".  (if there's a walking encyclopedia, there's also a walking song hits.  not only that, the guy is also a cebu pop music festival first placer, circa late 1980s.)

i finally learned the title from him.  how was i to know that it took a cebuano to tell me the title.  earlier i've asked some japanese friends who turned out to be unfamiliar with the song.  one said though that it's a pop song of some decades ago.
#31561
just recently, there was that japan-asean international conference on terrorism in cebu.  i understand that for the opening ceremonies, the loboc children's choir (yes, our very own had graced the opening ceremonies) had this song in its repertoire.  the choice was deliberate; it was a salute to the japanese delegate who was the biggest VIP among all the VIPs.  being a japan-asean conference, non-asean japan took precedence.  it must have sponsored the conference.
#31562
sometimes, a certain melody could remind us of memories we can't put our finger on.

there was this song whose title and lyrics i never got to know.

then six years ago, over dinner at bohol tropics, i heard onie oclarit sing it.  (fr chic, where are you?)  still i never got to know the title, much less the whole song itself.  but i can hum the refrain.

When my friend Don asked me about this , he said, "Why do the women in the Philippines wear those? They're already drop dead gorgeous with their tan skin. Why wear nasty creams for?"

Are they embarrassed of their natural morena beauty?

too bad there aren't too many dons around to appreciate morena beauties.

some would claim that there are morena skin tones that look dirty, that's why.  but i'm a fan of even toned morenas.  truly, they're drop dead gorgeous.  when they try to whiten their skin, they turn out to be drop dead white laboratory rats. ;D

Its funny because today at work I had a nurse (a white-american) who said to me, "Doc, i envy your tan skin tone. I wish my skin wasn't so pasty white!"

one more anachronism.  what some pinays would give to have pasty white skin, tsk, tsk.

as for skin color, purya daghan na kaayog puti sa pinas.  ang mga itom sa una nangaputi na man uy.  i know why.  glutathione.  super ang mga nurses nato ani diri kay kahibawo man sila mag-injectionay.

what set this trend first and foremost, i've read somewhere, is nicole kidman who didn't do anything to her pasty white skin.  she made white cool again just as madonna made bushy eyebrows cool again and, before her, there was the late margaux hemingway.

madisgrasya ning nagpaputi nato diri mahimo gyod silang michael jackson.

the shamrock (aka three-leaf clover) has truly been around by tradition:

The shamrock signified the First Division of the Second Corps of the Army of the Potomac in the American Civil War, which contained the Irish Brigade. It was red as were all of the division insignia of that corps and still be seen on the regimental coat of arms of "The Fighting Sixty-Ninth".

The flag of the city of Montreal, Quebec, Canada has a shamrock that is located in the lower right quadrant. The shamrock represents the Irish population, one of the four major ethnic groups that made up the population of the city in the 19th century when the arms were designed.

The shamrock is featured in the Canadian coat-of-arms.

The shamrock is featured on the passport stamp of Montserrat, many of whose citizens are of Irish descent.

Traditionally, shamrock is said to have been used by Saint Patrick to illustrate the Christian doctrine of the Trinity when Christianising Ireland in the 5th century. However, this is described by the Oxford English Dictionary a "a late tradition", first recorded in 1726, and is probably false. Nonetheless, since the 18th century, shamrock has been used as a symbol of Ireland in a similar way to how a rose is used for England, thistle for Scotland and leek for Wales. (wikipedia)

"clover" and "shamrock" confuses.  now i know why.

The shamrock is a three-leaved old white clover. It is known as a symbol of Ireland, with St. Patrick having used it as a metaphor for the Christian Trinity. The name shamrock is derived from Irish seamróg, which is the diminutive version of the Irish word for clover (seamair). (wikipedia)

it is not to be confused with four-leaf clover; shamrock is a three-leaf clover after all.

when i think ireland, i think of the IRA, leprechaun, and clover, not necessarily in that order.

then the word "shamrock" comes in.

The Erin Go Bragh flag, originally of Saint Patrick's Battalion, uses an angelic Cláirseach, a medieval Irish harp, cradled in a wreath of clover. A flag strongly symbolic of Irish nationalism, it is often seen on Saint Patrick's Day, usually displayed during the parades. (wikipedia)

a cursory check at www.alibaba.com shows a good number of pearl creams after all.  it makes one wonder what 'pearl cream' really means.  most of these creams are made in china (mainland), while some are made in taiwan.  the list also shows that thailand and india manufacture one brand each.

hello, manoh.  nice of you to drop by.

"pearl" must be a brand of a whitening cream, right?  let me check where it's made and whether or not its mercury content is tolerable.  i hope such data are available on the internet highway.  or would you care to post here the ingredients of this whitening cream that you're endorsing?

there are just too many whitening products out there that are dangerous because of mercury poisoning.  most of these are made in china and india.  we can't be too careful, you know.  so yes, if by chance any tblander would wish to whiten her face no matter if her arms are checkered, do check the mercury content.

diha may nigawas nga issue nga ang actual ug what is shown sa tv lahi kay kuno ang ubang fireworks sa tv computer-generated na para nindot tan-awon sa viewers

so far, everything i've read about this (computer-generated fireworks for tv viewers) is all about beijing olympics 2008 and not london 2012.  but here's a great piece about beijing's:

Beijing 2008

According to Beijing Times, all fireworks were authentic. Just to clear things up, the "only" Computer Generated (CG) shot was the 29 footprints toward the stadium. 28 of them, to be precise, were computer generated. The last one shown inside of the stadium was a real shot.

That being said, 28 footprints outside of the stadium were actually lit and real - only the "shot shown on TV" was fake. We weren't shown the real actual shot, but instead the CG one, because:

1) It's almost impossible for helicopter to catch up with the fireworks
2) It'd be very dangerous for the helicopter to be there in the first place

So in short, all fireworks we saw on TV were real except for the 1st-28th footprints shot - they were there but it had to be shown using CG due to technicality issue. There weren't "fake" fireworks. Only "fake" shot. - BeeR_Koo..., 4 years ago, http://answers.yahoo.com/
