27.  that makes you as old (or as young) as our resident doctor lorenz here.

wow!  great of you to get interested in feeding homeless cats.  please do so where you are.  we never run out of homeless cats who are everywhere, that's why.  they get sad and fearful, as you may know.

p.s. spare them from leftover crabs, shrimps and squid so they won't develop skin diseases that would make them more abhorrent to some people.

I'm Always Chasing Rainbows

At the end of the rainbow there's happiness
And to find it how often I've tried
But my life is a race, just a wild goose chase
And my dreams have all been denied

Why have I always been a failure?
What can the reason be?
I wonder if the world's to blame?
I wonder if it could be me?

I'm always chasing rainbows
Watching clouds drifting by
My schemes are just like all of my dreams
Ending in the sky

Some fellows look and find the sunshine
I always look and find the rain
Some fellows make a winning sometime
I never even make a gain
Believe me

I'm always chasing rainbows
Waiting to find a little blue bird in vain

What makes the episode under the Edsa-Timog flyover even more special is that it seemed like one of those quiet acts of kindnessâ€"unrehearsed, unplanned, spontaneous and real, a moment solely between the woman and the child she was helpingâ€"to which we the officious public are at best a cheering squad and at worst kibitzers. I hope all the public attention wouldn’t spoil the beauty of what that woman did, and I pray that the kindness she showed that morning would be returned to her a hundredfold.

What the miracle woman teaches us is that if we wish to live out our transformative mission in the here and now, we can do it ourselves in the course of our daily work. No need to wait for the next Edsa 1. Find your own Edsa 1 under every flyover, under every bridge. We should stop thinking that the civic self appears only during big historical moments or, worse, during ceremonies and at monuments. John F. Kennedy said it with flourish: “Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country.” Except that on Edsa, you must see your country in the eyes of the naked, needy child.

The miracle woman on Edsa showed us, in the words of a Facebook post, that “there are still good and kind people out there.” By her example, she taught us that we can make a difference in simple ways, and that we needn’t wait for some big historical moment or some dramatic political issue to lend a helping hand. She also reminds us that doing good calls for actual sacrifice. She gave up a coat; her act of kindness did cost her something. She gave up a rain jacket during a typhoon; she risked getting wet and sick and she would’ve had to worry whether the typhoon would still bring rainfall on her way home.

The “miracle woman” under the Edsa-Timog flyover reconciles the tension between the two faces of Edsa. One face belongs to the civic-spirited citizen in the public plaza, committed to the public good, capable of transcending the ego and committing the self to an abstract “nation.” The other face is that of the practical man in a rush to get ahead of everyone else on the road, attuned to the needs of the moment, fixated on short-term advantage and oblivious to fixing problems so that they don’t happen again.

Philosophers have said that we need to maintain the fiction of the civic-spirited citizen to leave us free to live the reality of the practical man. But that philosophy is stumped by Edsa because, at Edsa 1, the civic spirit wasn’t fiction. It was for real. The problem is that we have divorced the two worlds, as it were, the public and the private, and relegated public duty to ritual and delegated it to government. In that context, helping others is the job of others.

Edsa is one such place. It is indeed difficult to be a Good Samaritan on Edsa. In fact Edsa embodies the Filipino in his atomized worst, the Darwinian Pinoy who thrives in a dog-eat-dog world and makes a virtue out of merely being a survivor. If you want to picture what a “harsh and cruel world” looks like, imagine the life of those who live under the flyovers of Edsa. When Hobbes spoke of a world where raged a “war of all against all,” he could very well have been thinking of driving through Edsa.

But therein lies the irony. Edsa also epitomizes the proudest, most glorious moment of recent Philippine history, the triumph of the anti-Marcos uprising that restored our democracy. The 1986 Edsa Revolution is the emblem of the Filipino’s capacity to risk his life for the glorious cause of freedom, the courage of unarmed civilians willing to block advancing tanks with their own bodies.

Let’s hear it from Lyndon Santos himself: “I was so touched by what I witnessed yesterday morning …. The woman’s good deed ended with a wave of goodbye and a quick run for cover. Meron pa palang ganitong klaseng tao! Kung sino ka man, Mabuhay ka, madam!” (I didn’t know that there were still people like her in the world. Whoever you are, madam, long live!)

Lyndon’s post has since provoked soul-searching in other Filipinos. Some have asked: Would I have done the same thing in that same situation? And one was frank enough to say for himself: “Stuck in rainy traffic … hopelessly late for my next workshop or [meeting] or something… Napahiya ako sa sagot ko sa sarili ko.” (I was embarrassed by my answer.) I appreciate his candor and his embarrassment because it captures the dilemma of every Filipino of conscience and, conversely, the magic of meeting kindness in the most unexpected places.

That video of a Good Samaritan on Edsa

By: Raul C. Pangalangan
Philippine Daily Inquirer
Thursday, August 2nd, 2012

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hbQNVRd_Yio#

(Editor’s note: INQUIRER.net has been given permission by Lyndon Santos, who took the video which is the subject of Dean Raul Pangalangan’s column today, to post this on our site. We saw it fit to post it alongside Dean Pangalangan’s column)

The other day, I saw a short video that was making the rounds via Facebook. It was taken by motorist Lyndon Santos while he was caught in traffic under the Edsa-Timog flyover in Quezon City last Monday. The video showed a young woman giving her coat to a young girl, perhaps five or six years old, apparently naked until then. There was more than just a drizzle. Typhoon “Gener” was raging, after all, and the other pedestrians were seen running past with their umbrellas.

The young woman had stopped to take the hooded coat off her back, and had knelt down to button or zip it up neatly around the child. After giving the child a gentle pat, the young woman rushed offâ€"I imagine, to start her working day. The video clip lasted all of 35 seconds but it was moving, and I hope her fine example (and Lyndon’s initiative to post it for all to see) would be repeated countless times in quiet acts of charity that affirm our innate humanity and bring out the noble self that inheres in each one of us.

Cambodian Ambassador to the Philippines Hos Sereythonh
#31139
The body failed to issue a joint communique following the talks because of disagreements on the West Philippine Sea issue.

Saying he was sick, Hos never heeded DFA’s note verbale seeking an explanation for his remarks.

In a separate interview, Foreign Affairs Secretary Del Rosario said that the ambassador was scheduled to leave on August 17.

Asked how this was going to affect the relations between Cambodia and the Philippines, Del Rosario said, “I don’t think it affects the bilateral relations at all and I’d like to think we’re looking forward to healthy bilateral relations with Cambodia.”

Cambodian envoy sent home over West Philippine Sea comments

By Fatima Reyes, Tarra Quismundo
INQUIRER.net, Philippine Daily Inquirer
Friday, August 10th, 2012

MANILA, Philippines â€" Cambodian Ambassador to Manila Hos Sereythonh has been recalled by Phnom Penh following his remarks charging the Philippines and Vietnam of “dirty politics” in purportedly pressuring the Asean to adopt a united stand on the West Philippine Sea dispute.

DFA spokesperson Assistant Secretary Raul Hernandez said Friday morning that the Cambodian Foreign Ministry and the Cambodian Embassy in Manila separately informed DFA of the envoy’s recall.

The Philippines summoned Hos last week over his published remarks lashing out at Manila and Hanoi for being “inflexible” in July’s Asean ministers’ meeting in Phnom Penh.

those six years were not wasted, as you may admit deep within you.  but take your time... to forgive, if he's worth it in your estimation.  whatever, see to it that you remain kind to yourself.  what i also mean is to never make the mistake of having him as an emotional crutch because of your fears.  chances are the crutch might end up as a baseball bat and you are the ball.

oh, yes, lorenz is right; once a liar, always a liar.  but we also have to believe that human nature prevails.  every person is redeemable.  take your pick.

“Using condoms is the cheapest way to make small gadgets like phones and cameras waterproof,” he said.

“It can hold water,” he added. “I’m not sure when we started doing this. [But it] had passed on to others because it worked.”

On Taft Avenue, pedicab drivers and commuters used pieces of old billboards to protect themselves from the rain. Large plastic bags became raincoats for others.

Cell phones in condoms

“We can’t expect every household to have response equipment,” he added.

Rescuers from the Philippine National Police Maritime Group used condoms to keep their gadgets dry.

“Do you have one more condom?” one rescuer asked a colleague before boarding a truck to Barangay (village) Sienna in Quezon City, where floodwaters had reached up to roof level.

He was one of dozens of rescuers from the Maritime Group and from the Air Force-trained group Search and Rescue Auxiliary Group Inc. (Saragi) who were proud to pioneer the use of condoms in protecting cell phones and cameras from getting wet in the rain.

Anything that floats

Those who could walk to safety used anything that floatsâ€"pails, plastic tubs, driftwood, banana trunks, discarded Styrofoam blocksâ€"to survive the floods.

“This is Filipino ingenuity. When it comes to this kind of situation, we should use all available means,” Diciano said.

On Wednesday, rescuers who waded into the floods used their bodies and household items to ferry people in flooded communities.

Lieutenant Jayson Diciano of the Philippine Coast Guard said he and his team used Styrofoam, slippers, nets and bamboo sticks to build a stretcher. The team used it to carry a 19-year-old resident of Malabon who was injured.

Diciano said he and his team also carried people on their backs.

In times of distress, Filipino ingenuity rises to the occasion.

In operations to help people in distress, rescuers are using ordinary household items and even rubbish to get people to safety.

And they have found a use for condoms that Catholic bishops would surely approveâ€" keeping their gadgets dry.

this, more or less, explains it all.  a dire warning for tagbilaran.  someone is said to be encouraging those squatters there. :(

Squatters, attracted by economic opportunities in the city, often build shanties on river banks, storm drains and canals, dumping garbage and impeding the flow of waterways.

The plan would have affected one in five Manila residents and taken 10 years and P130 billion ($3.11 billion) to implement.

But squatter communities in danger zones have in fact grown since 2009.

“With the increasing number of people occupying danger zones, it is inevitable there are a lot people who are endangered when these things happen,” Einseidel said.

Eighty percent of Manila was this week covered in waters that in some parts were nearly two meters (six feet and six inches) deep, after more than a normal August’s worth of rain was dumped on the city in 48 hours.

Twenty people have died and two million others have been affected, according to the government.

The deluge was similar to one in 2009, a disaster that claimed more than 460 lives and prompted pledges from government leaders to make the city more resistant to floods.

A government report released then called for 2.7 million people in shantytowns to be moved from “danger zones” alongside riverbanks, lakes and sewers.

Damaged watersheds, massive squatter colonies living in danger zones and the neglect of drainage systems are some of the factors that have made the chaotic city of 15 million people much more vulnerable to enormous floods.

Urban planner Nathaniel Einseidel said the Philippines had enough technical know-how and could find the necessary financing to solve the problem, but there was no vision or political will.

“It’s a lack of appreciation for the benefits of long-term plans. It’s a vicious cycle when the planning, the policies and enforcement are not very well synchronized,” said Einseidel, who was Manila’s planning chief in1979-89.

“I haven’t heard of a local government, a town or city that has a comprehensive drainage masterplan.”

Following the Wang Lijun incident and Bo's removal from key Communist Party posts, Gu was placed under investigation for homicide in Heywood's death.  On 10 April 2012, Gu was detained and "transferred to the judicial authorities" as part of the investigation.  In an unusual move, state media appended her husband's surname in front of her own (rendering her name as Bo Gu Kailai) in an official press release regarding the Heywood case, contrary to the convention for married women in PRC.  The appending of Bo's surname implied that Gu had acquired Singaporean residency, or citizenship of another foreign country, and that as a result "Bo Gu Kailai" appeared on her official documents.  Others suggest that this is because authorities wanted to emphasize that Gu's alleged crimes were linked to misconduct by her husband. In March 2012, Gu became embroiled in a national scandal after her husband's deputy, Wang Lijun, apparently sought refuge at the U.S. consulate in Chengdu. It was rumored that Wang presented evidence of a corruption scandal, whereby Bo sought to impede a corruption investigation against Gu.  Specifically, Wang stated that Gu had been involved in a business dispute with British businessman Neil Heywood, who died in Chongqing under disputed circumstances; Wang alleged he had been poisoned. The Wall Street Journal reported that Wang may have fallen out of favor with Bo for discussing the Heywood case. (wikipedia)

Gu Kailai gained her degree in law and then a masters in international politics from Peking University.

She went on to become an accomplished lawyer founding the Kailai law firm in Beijing.  In the course of her career, she was involved in several high-profile cases, and is suggested to have been the first Chinese lawyer to win a civil suit in the United States, where she represented several Dalian-area companies involved in a dispute in Mobile, Alabama.  She is also the author of several books. Gu is the youngest of five daughters of General Gu Jingsheng, a prominent revolutionary in the years before the Chinese Communist Party took power.  General Gu held various government positions during early Communist rule but was imprisoned during the Cultural Revolution.  Gu Kailai herself was also punished, being forced to work in a butcher's and a textile factory.

Gu met Bo Xilai in 1984 while on a field trip looking into environmental art in Jin County, Liaoning, where he was the communist party secretary.  The couple have one son, Bo Guagua, who studied at Harrow School and Balliol College, Oxford.  Guagua went on to study at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government.
