Technology / Re: Facebook users drop
August 16, 2012, 03:59:26 PM
U.S. users decreased 1.1 percent over the past six months, Rory Maher, an analyst at Capstone, said in a report today. Of 23 countries where Facebook had at least 50 percent market penetration, growth was little changed or down in 14 nations over the past three months, he said.

“This could be an issue for Facebook growth since we estimate that outside of Southeast Asia and some countries in Latin America, most markets are approaching 50 percent penetration,” Maher said in the report.

Facebook Falls as Use on Social Site Drops: San Francisco Mover

By Lisa Rapaport
Jul 17, 2012

Facebook Inc. (FB), operator of the world’s largest social-network, declined after a report from Capstone Investments said the number of users fell over the past six months.

The shares of Menlo Park, California-based Facebook decreased 0.6 percent to $28.09 at the close in New York, adding to a 8.1 percent slide yesterday.  Shares of Zynga Inc. (ZNGA), which gets most of its revenue from games played on Facebook, dropped 5.2 percent to $4.58.

i must be illiterate! ;D

i haven't come across rules on transferring.  if there are, kindly tip me off.

but i did come across subjects on deletions and what are libelous and destructive to others.  the former is beyond me, the latter is what struck me about the subject post.  i repeat, i did not delete; i only transferred, leaving the decision on what to do with that post to the more credible authorities in this forum.

because you seem sensitive about the rules that you wield, notwithstanding the fact that you are comebacking powers after a long drought, you have begun to look at the forest instead of the trees.

you'd rather mind the rules (approval from admins) rather than the subject post (bile)?  doesn't anybody care anymore about the difference between the letter of the law and the spirit of the law, or that laws are made for man and not the other way around?

i repeat, i did not delete.

well, it is within your power to put back that subject post.  i wonder what you would have done if that post were addressed to you and not to someone else.

Unger cried as he said, “People from all over are doing this. I can’t believe it.  So much has come in already in donations that I don’t have to worry about anything at the vet anymore.”

All of the donors are anonymous.  “How do I thank them?” he said.  “It’s just such an amazing thing.”

We cover topics like serial killers and exploitation movies and weird comic books and stupid toys, but in reality there's nothing quite as badass as the idea that people can be so simply decent to each other.  It's getting a little dusty in here - I have to wipe my eyes.

That's touching enough - a testament to the magical bond between humans and their pets.  But what happened when that picture went viral is where the story gets amazing.

â€œA woman from Virginia basically paid for the latest laser therapy on his joints,” [Unger] said.  “She paid for a full treatment, and I don’t know how much it is, but I know I couldn’t have done that.”

Schoep just had his second installment of treatments Wednesday, and has four more to go.  Unger got a surprise when he took Schoep in for his latest appointment.  As he walked in, his vet smiled at him.  “What’s going on?”  Unger asked.  His vet said, “See all the stuff behind me?”  Unger looked, and there were packages of glucosamine, treats and other treatments to help Schoep with joint pain.

Sometimes The Internet Doesn’t Suck

How a picture of a man and his dog unleashed a torrent of human kindness.

(i can never have enough of this photograph.  i can spend the whole day just looking at it. - islander)

Some days it's easy to think that the internet was a terrible, terrible idea.  Reading through comments on YouTube or IMDB or Yahoo! will often bring despair - we humans, for all our technological advances, remain petty, ugly, hateful shits.

But every now and again something happens that not only restores my faith in humanity but also in the internet as a force for something other than spawning horrific brony subcultures.  Such a story concerns the picture above, which you've probably seen by now on Reddit or Facebook or Twitter or any number of sites online.  That picture is John Unger, floating in Lake Superior with his dog Schoep.  It looks cute, but it's got a deeper meaning - Schoep has severe arthritis and may need to be put down.  Unger brings Schoep to Lake Superior for water therapy, allowing the dog to float weightlessly and ease the pain in his joints, letting him get some rest.

good news!  the heartbroken, unassuming 49-year-old bachelor john unger received hundreds of emails (he learned to use the internet only last february) and already many women from around the world have asked if he's single.  he is.  also, he said something like he kind of welcomes the possibility of meeting the right woman because where he is, he doesn't get to meet women (i presume women who aren't married).

Even her doctor admits to that fact.

no comment

Cabral: The obstetrician of Mrs. Helen Gamboa Sotto was Dr. Carmen Enverga Santos who has been dead for many years now.

According to Sen. Sotto, his wife got pregnant while using contraceptives (it was not specified what contraceptive and whether she was using it correctly and under medical supervision); and that Dr. Enverga Santos and Makati Medical Center (who else aside from Dr. Enverga Santos in Makati Medical Center was not mentioned) attribute the weak heart of Vincent Paul to Mrs. Sotto’s use of contraceptives...

Since Dr. Carmen Enverga Santos is dead, she cannot confirm or belie  the allegation of Sen. Sotto that she said his son’s weak heart was caused by his wife’s having used contraceptives before her pregnancy.

However, an inspection of  the hospital records and death certificate of Vincent Paul G. Sotto may help show the real cause of his death. I hope the good senator will make these public.

Talk of the Town / Senator Sotto as anti-RH Bill
August 14, 2012, 10:49:26 PM
let's hope that the senate majority floorleader did not shoot himself in the foot with his turno en contra speech assailing the rh bill and end up not helping the cause.  just wondering...

some salient points of his emotional(!?) speech on the senate floor, and the reaction of former health secretary dr esperanza cabral.

Sotto: My wife Helen and I, nawalan po kami ng anak dahil sa contraceptives... Wala sila [mga doktor] makita na dahilan kung bakit nagkaganun yung bata kundi dahil nagcocontraceptives yung asawa ko. Nabuntis pa rin kahit gumagamit ng contraceptives.

Cabral:  Without meaning to belittle the anguish that Sen. Sotto felt and apparently still feels over the loss of his son, allow me to say that condoms, hormonal contraceptives, intrauterine devices etc.,  have not been shown by scientific methods to cause “weak hearts” in babies born following their mothers’ use of these contraceptives.

Sen. Sotto seems to have fallen into the fallacy of post hoc ergo propter hoc,  Latin for "after this, therefore because of this" â€" or... "My wife used contraceptives, then my son was born with a weak heart; therefore my son’s weak heart was caused by my wife’s use of contraceptives."

Following that line of argument, if at the time of Vincent Paul’s conception, Sen. Sotto failed to brush his teeth,  it could be argued that his son was born with a weak heart because he failed to brush his teeth before having sex with Mrs. Sotto.

An anonymous donor paid for Schoep to have laser treatments at Bay Area Animal Hospital.  Schoep’s owner has given the hospital permission to keep people updated on Schoep’s treatment and status. (http://theperilsofpalins.wordpress.com/)

the photographer
#30955

In John's arms, there's no urge to swim, only to sleep as Schoep is granted a few moments of serenity from his sore limbs. (http://www.cw23.com/)
#30956
“What we are trying to do is give him quality of life,” Haukaas said. “I can’t expect that we’re going to extend his life. He’s already an incredibly old dog. But the time that he has with us we want to make him as comfortable as possible.”

Unger said the pain medicine alone seems to have made Schoep perkier. He’s realistic about his dog’s future but thankful for whatever he can get.

“What I initially thought when I asked Hannah to do the photograph I thought possibly it might only be a couple of more weeks,” he said. “But with the treatment, with the pain medicine, with the supplements, now it’s going to be longer for sure.”

http://www.dl-online.com/event/article/id/69347/
#30957

Hudson and Unger also stand to benefit financially. The print is for sale online in a variety of formats, and they will split the proceeds 50-50. Hudson said she hopes to use her share of whatever money results to fulfill “a dream of mine,” but wouldn’t say exactly what that dream is. “It involves dogs and it involves photography.”

Unger simply wants to pay off some bills and pay back some loans. “I’ve had to borrow money at times,” he said. “The generous people from this community have helped me with a loan here and there when I’ve needed it.”

For all the changes, the one thing that can’t change is that Schoep is an old dog with degenerative arthritis.
#30958

The glucosamine “gets oil into the rusty hinges,” Haukaas said, but won’t take effect for a few weeks.

The laser treatment, in use for dogs for a couple of years, involves passing a wand across the dog’s limbs as it lies on a mat. “Many of the times when we’re doing the treatment, the dogs fall asleep,” Haukaas said. “It probably feels like a bit of a massage.”

Glucosamine costs about $70 a month, Haukaas said. The six initial laser treatments, which take place over three weeks, cost between $200 and $300. Schoep probably will need ongoing treatment, Haukaas said, although the frequency will depend on how he responds to the first set.

But donations keep coming in. “We got a call from London this morning,” Haukaas said.
#30959
Besides, Schoep is benefitting from all of the attention. A couple of weeks ago, Unger had taken his dog to Bay Area Animal Hospital in Ashland. He got pain medication for Schoep but couldn’t afford more extensive treatment. But after learning about the dog’s story, anonymous donors made it possible for Schoep to get the supplement glucosamine along with laser treatments to treat his arthritis.

“John is a great guy, but he just doesn’t have any money,” said the veterinarian, Dr. Erik Haukaas. “Schoep is a great dog and everybody has responded to this, and we have received a number of donations. So we are now able to do everything possible for the dog.”
#30960
Lest all of this sounds like an unwelcome burden for a small-town professional photographer and a middle-aged bachelor-farmer, neither has any complaints.

“It’s so much fun,” Unger said. “Still, I haven’t slept much. I’m not eating well. The dishes are still in the sink, undone. But Schoep is fantastic. … It’s all fantastic.”

Said Hudson, a former insurance agent: “I’ve discovered that these random skills that I have are all coming to fruition. They are all useful right now. And that’s why I’m not stressed out. I’m enjoying this.”

#30961
The unassuming Unger had been interviewed by Duluth and Minneapolis TV stations on Thursday. “It’s generally I’m taking care of the stuff up here and she’s doing the nationals,” Unger said of Hudson. Then he laughed at what he’d just said. “That’s just bizarre.”

Helping Unger and Hudson manage the attention and demands on their time is Julie McGarvie Unger, John Unger’s sister-in-law, who has a career in public relations.

“It’s nothing but interviews now, where before it was nothing but berries,” said John Unger, who is a caretaker on the fruit farm outside of Bayfield where he lives. “That’s all I had to think about before was berries.”
#30962
The News Tribune’s story about the picture, which appeared Monday, was only the beginning of a flurry of media attention. Among other outlets, their story has been on the Huffington Post, CNN, Fox News, the “Today” show’s blog, the St. Paul Pioneer Press, City Pages in Minneapolis and “a bunch of Croatian TV stations and newspapers,” said Hudson, whose home base is Bayfield.

Unger said he has heard from people in Hungary, Russia, the Czech Republic, Poland, Norway, Sweden, Germany, Great Britain, Mexico, Colombia, Guatemala, Australia, New Zealand and “places I had to look up because I had no idea where they were.”

Donations roll in for Web sensation Schoep the dog

By: John Lundy, Duluth News Tribune, DL-Online
August 13, 2012

DULUTH, Minn. - It says something about the joyous frenzy that has arisen around John Unger and his dog, Schoep, this week that Unger and photographer Hannah Stonehouse Hudson have had to bring in a public relations agent.

“My phone is ringing off the hook,” Hudson said during a phone interview on Thursday from the Upper Peninsula, where she was heading for an assignment. “I have 500 unanswered e-mails at this point.”

Hudson took the shot seen around the world â€" Unger holding the blissfully slumbering Schoep, his 19-year-old shepherd mix, in the waters of Lake Superior â€" on July 31 and posted it on her Facebook page on Aug. 1. By Sunday, it had gotten 1.8 million views; the last she checked it was close to 3 million.
#30964
ugh.  why are my eyes wet? :'(
#30966
John was grateful for the photographer’s help capturing what he feared might be the final Lake Superior soak with Schoep. Unger was faced with the possibility of putting Schoep down to end his constant pain if the medication he was taking did not start to help his arthritis condition. Thanks to the growing popularity of the photo of Unger cradling his sleeping dog in the lake, donations have poured in to help pay for arthritis laser treatments for Schoep.

http://www.inquisitr.com/
#30967
“To be honest with you, I don’t think I’d be here if I didn’t have Schoep with me that night. He just snapped me out of it. I don’t know how to explain it. He just snapped me out of it. I just want to do whatever I can for this dog because he basically saved my a**,” John Unger told the Duluth Tribune.

Hannah Stonehouse Hudson captured the now famous photo of Unger cradling Schoep in the water on Lake Superior. Hudson stated during an interview with the Huffington Post that the image of the man cradling his sleeping dog in the water is in no way staged.

“This is in no way posed. I hate posed photos. They never ever capture the true essence of anything,” the Stonehouse Photography owner stated during the interview.
#30968
John Unger and his former fiance found Schoep at the Ozaukee County Wisconsin Humane Society where he had been abandoned and showed signs of being beaten. While Unger’s relationship with his fiance did not last, the one with the dog thrived. Unger credits Schoep with his recovery from a severe depression after the break-up that prompted him to consider suicide.

The phrase “man’s best friend” may have never been more true. John Unger adopted Schoep when the the shepherd mix was just a tiny bundle of fur. The pair of life-long companions go to Lake Superior most evenings so Schoep can have the chance to rest free from arthritis pain. Schoep has difficulty sleeping, so John Unger and his best pal routinely travel to nearby Lake Superior to get in the water together. The movement of the water soothes the sweet old dog, lulling him to sleep, Radar Online notes.

Man Cradles His Sick 19-Year-Old Dog In Lake Superior To Help Ease Its Arthritis Pain

John Unger often wades in the waters of Lake Superior, cradling his sick dog Schoep to help ease its arthritis pain. The touching photo of the sick 19-year-old dog and his best friend have attracted millions of views online and likely more than a tear or two from dog lovers. Schoep is named after a popular Wisconsin ice cream shop.

this is going to be some political fight come election time; clan teams, sort of.

gunning for mayor is gonzaga, the brother-in-law of relampagos.  his running mate is veloso, brother-in-law of the governor.  who will run for mayor too from the other side?  the brother or nephew of lim?  the theory of "relativity" is alive and well in bohol! ;D

in fact, the sound advice is government banks are safer.  they may not offer bigger interests or better services, but your deposit is assured because government banks are the government's priority in extreme bailouts.  the DBP and Land Bank thus are old reliables.

about the closure of banks like banco batangan... it's sickening.  that's why it's always advisable to have a bank account with tried and tested bigger banks.  i went through a bank closure years ago.  that was banco filipino.  i must say the experience of a bank run is unpleasant.

would that claims for our pre-need deposits to prudentialife would have this kind of process too.  it looks so easy and sure.  but i know it is not to be in the case of ponzi scheme-like pre-need plans.

as a stay-at-home, i have no pension to look forward to when i reach retirement age.  thus did i create my own pension with prudentialife.  kaput.  it would be a miracle to get back my full 200k-plus; only a negligible fraction can be had, if at all.  fortunately, i'm not crying.  but woe to the next person who will dare sell to me any kind of investment plan...

the city of Porto Velho in Rondonia, Brazil

Burnt out jungle at the Beni-Rondonia frontier, Brazil. Settlers burn through the jungle to extend their farms and get profit from cow breeding. Amazonia is the world's largest dense tropical forest area. Since the 16th century the original indigenous people have been virtually pushed away or exterminated. The primal ancient unity between tribes and the jungle ambient has changed into a fight between the urban based civilization and the jungle enviroment. Although new generations of white and mestizo settlers have not become adapted to the wild tropical climate and rough conditions, they keep moving deeper into the virgin forest. The technological expansion causes that Amazonia is changing rapidly.

deforestation on the Amazon Frontier, Rondonia, Brazil
#30983
Researchers say that between 1980 and 1992, more than 1,000 square miles (2,500 square kilometers) of forest in Rondônia was lost each year. The beginning of the loss coincided with a 1979 decision by Brazil’s Program of National Integration to build roads in the forest and to offer cheap land for agriculture.

In recent decades, the center of deforestation in Brazil has shifted east to the states of Mato Grosso and Pará, where large tracts of land are being cleared for mechanized agriculture, rather than small farms. Even so, Brazil’s overall rate of deforestation has slowed, attributable in part to more rigorous enforcement against illegal deforestation and logging activities.

Bottom line: Two images were taken by the Landsat satellite in 1975 and in 2012 show deforestation in the Amazon rainforest.

Access to this remote region began with the building of a major road stretching from north to south. Secondary roads were then slowly cut through the dense forest at right angles to the initial road. Settlers cleared the area by first cutting and then burning the forest. As farmed lands grew larger and closer together, they began to merge into a large area of deforestation with a distinctive fishbone pattern.

maayong buntag pod, pk!

i know some here who can explain this better, but they haven't appeared as of now (webmaster mol, hubag, bugsay, and others).  meantime, bear with me. ;D

you understand at this point that cebuano-visayan sentence construction is different from english in that the subject-verb-object (S-V-O) format is hardly used because it would sound awkward.  rather, what is used is the verb-subject-object (V-S-O) format.  thus:

English:                I am going to the mall. (S-V-O format)
Cebuano:             Moadto ko sa mall. (V-S-O format)
'Wrong' Cebuano: Ako moadto sa mall. (S-V-O format); n.b., may be used in poetry but not in daily conversations.

please note too that i use the term "cebuano-visayan" to particularize the specific language that you show in your post.  this is so because there are many visayan languages (i use the word 'language' here in keeping with the word's definition, as against 'dialect'), the major ones of which are ilonggo, hiligaynon, waray, etc.---languages that make it difficult for visayans to communicate with each other!

and now to your sentences (in parentheses--literal translation):

Wala siya niadto. (Was not he/she there then.) - She/He was not there then OR She/He was not there at that time.  Sometimes, this is used simply to mean "She/He did not go" and is understood as such, in context.

Wala siya muadto. (Did not she/he go.) - She/He did not go.

Dili siya niadto. (Is not she/he then.) - She/He is/does not then; She/He is/does not before.  Again, this is used and understood, in context.  She likes durian?  Now, yes.  Dili siya niadto.  (She did not, before.)

Dili siya muadto. (Is not she/he going.) - She/He is not going.

QuoteI thought that wala negates a past action but I have come across examples where wala negates verbs beginning with mu-.

wala, like dili, negates past, present and future actions actually.

QuoteI'm confused!

my personal experience (this "trying hard" soul wants to learn as many languages as she can, and had failed) is that i fail miserably when i try to learn another language through the academic (i.e., grammatical) approach.  immersion is still the best.  exposure to the language, listening to radio broadcasts and tapes, communicating with local speakers, learning 5 to 10 new words a day-- they do the trick.  grammar follows in the natural course of things.  i'm a believer that language existed long before grammarians were born.

i hope i did not muddle your confusion some more.  hinaot nga wa nako makutaw ug samot ang imong kalibog. ;D

i can hardly wait for the webmaster, hubag and bugsay to share their knowledge on this.  they are the cebuano-visayan gurus as far as i can make out.
