Banig or handmade mats are made from the leaves of the screw pine palm (locally called in the Philippines as pandan or romblon).

The romblon banig are considered the most intricate and fine-grained mats in the country if not in Southeast Asia and mat makers in the Visayas and Mindanao, particularly those from the Yakan and Samal ethnic tribes, are among the best banig weavers.

Depending on the skills and time of the mat maker, it takes around two to five weeks to make a single mat. The women of the Samal tribe in Southern Mindanao are especially reputed to produce very fine weaves that are often used in handcrafted handbags, wallets and envelopes, among other fashion accessory items.

Banig is also an ideal bamboo bed cover due to its cool and smooth surface. Designs range from the abstract, flower patterns to novel (such as the Philippine map!) or made-to-order motifs. -- http://365greatpinoystuff.wordpress.com/

Move on. If you wait for three months with no response, it's time to move on. Start with another celebrity that appeals to your sensibilities.

8)
#30748

7

Send a polite follow up letter after six weeks. It is safe to assume that is enough time for a celebrity to have received your letter and have taken some sort of action. If she is out of town or otherwise engaged, she will not receive your initial letter or this follow up until some time later. You want to be clear that you are not putting pressure on in this letter. Simply state that you sent a previous letter, express your enthusiasm about the project and conclude that you look forward to hearing from her at her convenience.
#30749

6

Be patient. While calling an agent to see if the letter arrived after a three to six week period is acceptable, further calls can be considered both an annoyance and a detriment from being taken seriously. Continuous calls can even end up with harassment worries. You want to keep it low key.
#30750

5

Mail the letter via priority mail. It's slightly more expensive than first class, but it is more official. It also may make your letter stand out from the crowd. It's also important that you do your homework. The celebrity may be out of town, on location around the world or swamped with personal things. It's never fair to get angry at a celebrity for a slow response. A celebrity's mail flow is often enormous, and your letter may have simply been marked as a fan letter prior to opening.
#30751

4

Create a proposition. It should clearly state what you need, what you have to offer and your detailed explanation of why this transaction will be beneficial to the both of you. Never try to con a celebrity (or anybody else, of course). You will get caught.
#30752

3

Talk to the celebrity over the phone if possible. If you have a connection from a friend, this is very helpful. He can ask you questions directly about the project, and you can clarify what your needs are in the situation. If he trusts you and understands that you are honest and willing to work hard for the endeavor, your chances of success will have multiplied.
#30753

2

Consider who has a need for you and what you personally have to offer. Wealth doesn't only come in the form of cash. Think of what you have to offer a celebrity. Target specific celebrities that would need what you have.
#30754

1

Choose a celebrity that would have a personal interest in you and the cause for the financial help. The average celebrity has a mailbox full of charity requests. Research the celebrities in order to narrow down your options. A celebrity will give funds to causes that he supports, to be a part of a historical project that can lead to acclaim and recognition or as an investment in something that has probable profit. Keep in mind that you won't get something for nothing.

The Strappado
#30760
History / The Inquisition
December 16, 2012, 04:02:54 PM

The Medieval Inquisition is a series of Inquisitions (Roman Catholic Church bodies charged with suppressing heresy) from around 1184, including the Episcopal Inquisition (1184-1230s) and later the Papal Inquisition (1230s). It was in response to large popular movements throughout Europe considered apostate or heretical to Christianity, in particular Catharism and Waldensians in southern France and northern Italy. These were the first inquisition movements of many that would follow.

Torture was used after 1252. On May 15, Pope Innocent IV issued a papal bull entitled Ad exstirpanda, which authorized the use of torture by inquisitors. The Inquisitors were forbidden to use methods that resulted in bloodshed, mutilation or death. One of the more common forms of medieval inquisition torture was known as strappado. The hands were bound behind the back with a rope, and the accused was suspended this way, dislocating the joints painfully in both arms. Weights could be added to the legs dislocating those joints as well.

The organization is still active today under the name of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. Prior to becoming Pope Benedict XVI, Cardinal Ratzinger was the head of the congregation. -- http://listverse.com/

The result is an America that no sane person of any political persuasion could have possibly wished for. Who in his right mind wants to live in a country where maybe twice a year a crazed individual guns down dozens of people in schools and theaters? There is no plausible remedy since we are neither going to disarm Americans nor are we going to pass out guns to elementary school teachers as a just-in-case precaution.

All we can do is mourn and mourn again. And think of the young children who died only because they went to school giggling over silly things and dreaming of recess. Such is the American way of life and, sadly, death.

:P
#30764
It’s hard to remember that for a while in the 1980s and 1990s, a limited form of gun control seemed politically possible. Reagan’s press secretary James Brady, badly wounded in the John Hinckley assassination attempt on Reagan, became a courageous Republican symbol for sensible regulation of the most lethal weaponry.

But then too many on Capitol Hill (Democrats as well as Republicans) grew fearful in the face of the frenzied opposition from the NRA. And following the 2008 Heller decision, it seemed the height of folly for legislators to take on gun control since the Supreme Court had so narrowed the framework for permissible regulation. As a result, even though the Aurora shootings took place in a swing state (Colorado) in an election year, Obama and the Democrats at the time never even raised the possibility of new federal legislation.

This should not be portrayed in cartoonish terms as a story of the white hats (liberals with a visceral hatred of guns) versus the black hats (hunters and other Americans who enjoy owning firearms). There was an element of cultural superiority to the urban liberal disdain for gun ownership, just as there was a self-destructive stubbornness to conservative opposition to all forms of regulation.
#30765
It is hard to pin down exactly when Americans made the collective decision that periodic massacres of the innocent are the price that we supposedly pay for our liberties.

Maybe it dates back to the late19th century when Americans in peaceful communities embraced the myth of the Wild West and the gunslinger. Maybe it partially reflects the tabloid fascination that accompanied the gangster era of the 1920s and 1930s. Maybe it has something to do with the way that moviesâ€"that most American of art formsâ€"have successfully turned mass violence into a mass commodity.

Politics also played a role as well. As Jill Lepore pointed out in a New Yorker article earlier this year, the National Rifle Association (NRA) only embarked on its modern crusade against virtually all gun legislation around 1970. Fully entering the political arena with its endorsement of Ronald Reagan for president in 1980, the NRA emerged as a key player in the conservative coalition that came to dominate the Republican Party.
#30766
This is the Faustian bargain that comes with being a 21st-century American. We are a nation of stubborn individualism and lethal gun violence. These two characteristics are entwined in our national psyche. Andâ€"as much as I weep over the dead children at Sandy Hook Elementary Schoolâ€"I sadly know that nothing will change in my lifetime.

The last glimmer of hope for effective gun control in America died in 2008 when the Supreme Court (District of Columbia v. Heller) endorsed an expansive view of the right to bear arms. As Justice Antonin Scalia declared in the majority opinion, “The Second Amendment protects an individual right to possess a firearm unconnected with service in a militia.”

The longest war: The shooting at a Connecticut school shows, once again, that there’s no end in sight to our lethal way of life
By Walter Shapiro
http://news.yahoo.com/
Fri, Dec 14, 2012

Sometime between the shootings in Columbine in 1999 and at a Tucson supermarket with Gabby Giffords in early 2011, Americans stopped uttering the pieties about “Never again.” Now we are heartsick, but somehow never completely surprised, when we hear the latest gruesome news bulletins from a movie theater in Aurora or a quiet elementary school in Newtown.

We are a nation of 311 million people and roughly a similar number of guns. (Since there is no central federal registry of firearms and a 100-year-old unlicensed weapon can be lethal, estimates are far from precise.) What we do know for certain is that there are almost as many legal places to buy guns (130,000 registered dealers) as gasoline stations (144,000). Through the end of November, the FBI conducted nearly 17 million background checks of prospective gun owners this year.

New International Version (NIV)

16 And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. 17 He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’

18 “Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. 19 And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”’

20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’

Be the Tortoise

It’s easy to get swept up in big numbers and “secret methods”. The Ponzi scheme works because the Hare’s method is more exciting than the tortoise’s.

But if you want to retire a millionaire, then you need to remember: “Slowly does it every time!”
#30774
What About the Hare?

The Hare doesn’t want to wait 30 years to grow that nest into a million bucks. Watching 4,000 become 5,000 that first year isn’t exciting. He’s investing in junk bonds, gold, and learning to time the market. He thinks he can get 10 or 20 times his investment by taking the risks. It’s more fun than the tortoise’s method and he will be a millionaire in a few years!

Sadly for him, history shows us that Hare investors get about the same returns as gamblers. They may see significant early gains, but in the end the house wins and they lose everything.
#30775
If Tortoise was an investor (and I’m sure he is) he would become a millionaire the same way he won the race: slowly every time.

Invest Like the Tortoise

Imagine the Tortoise as a “normal” investor. He puts about 15% of his income into mutual funds with a pretty boring breakdown:

25% in Growth
25% in Growth and Income
25% in Aggressive Growth
25% in International

It’s average, boring and gets a normal 12-to-18% return. Some months are up, some months are down, but the tortoise plugs along for 30 years. If his investments were in a Roth IRA and he contributed $414 a year at a 12% interest rate he would have 1.46 million in 30 years. Even more exciting, our tortoise only contributed $149,000 dollars!

He’s a millionaire by year 27 and if he increases his contributions at any time he’s a millionaire significantly sooner.

You’ve heard the story about the Tortoise and the Hare, right? For those that weren’t exposed to the childhood favorite, it goes like this:

Tortoise is sick of Hare teasing him for being so slow. One day he challenges Hare to a race. As the race begins, Hare easily rushes ahead. When Hare is half way, he looks back and sees Tortoise far behind. To make tortoise look even worse, Hare decides to take a nap right on the track! But when Hare wakes up, he sees Tortoise inches from the finish line! He runs as fast as he can but is beaten by the tortoise who gleefully says,

“Slowly does it every time!”

The moral is simple: do the work and you’ll win the race. Hare thinks he can get by without effort and he loses. The tortoise slowly plods along, even when he’s far behind, and eventually wins the race.

Examples

Waylon Jennings was a guitarist for Buddy Holly's band and initially had a seat on the ill-fated aircraft on The Day the Music Died. But Jennings gave up his seat to the sick J.P. "Big Bopper" Richardson, only to learn later of the plane's demise. When Holly learned that Jennings was not going to fly, he said, "Well, I hope your ol' bus freezes up." Jennings responded, "Well, I hope your ol' plane crashes." This exchange of words, though made in jest at the time, haunted Jennings for the rest of his life. Jennings, who later became a country music star, expressed survivor's guilt about Richardson's death.

Holocaust survivor Primo Levi, haunted by his experiences in Auschwitz, explored his own survivor's guilt extensively in his autobiographical books, notably in I sommersi e i salvati (The Drowned and the Saved). His death was reportedly a suicide, and towards the end of his life he suffered from depression, possibly induced by his experiences.

Treatment

Early disaster response and grief therapy methods both attempt to prevent survivor guilt from arising. Where it is already present, therapists attempt to recognize the guilt and understand the reasons for its development. Next, a therapist may present a sufferer with alternative, hopeful views on the situation. The emotional damage and trauma is then recognized, released and treated. With growing self-confidence the survivor's guilt may be relieved, and the survivor may come to understand that the traumatic event was the result of misfortune, not of the survivor's actions. Once able to view himself or herself as a sufferer, not one who caused suffering, the survivor can mourn and continue with life.

Survivor syndrome, also called concentration camp syndrome, or called KZ syndrome on account of the German term Konzentrationslager, are terms which have been used to describe the reactions and behaviors of people who have survived massive and adverse events, such as the Holocaust, the Rape of Nanking, and the HIV/AIDS epidemic. They are described as having a pattern of characteristic symptoms including anxiety and depression, social withdrawal, sleep disturbance and nightmares, physical complaints and emotional lability with loss of drive.[5] Commonly such survivors feel guilty that they have survived the trauma and othersâ€"such as their family, friends, and colleaguesâ€"did not.

Both conditions, along with other descriptive syndromes covering a range of traumatic events are now subsumed under posttraumatic stress disorder.

Survivor guilt was first identified during the 1960s. Several therapists recognized similar if not identical conditions among Holocaust survivors. Similar signs and symptoms have been recognized in survivors of traumatic situations including combat, natural disasters, terrorist attacks, and wide-ranging job layoffs. A variant form has been found among rescue and emergency services personnel who blame themselves for doing too little to help those in danger, and among therapists, who may feel a form of guilt in the face of their patients' suffering.

Sufferers sometimes blame themselves for the deaths of others, including those who died while rescuing the survivor or whom the survivor tried unsuccessfully to save.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Survivor, survivor's, or survivors guilt or syndrome is a mental condition that occurs when a person perceives themselves to have done wrong by surviving a traumatic event when others did not. It may be found among survivors of combat, natural disasters, epidemics, among the friends and family of those who have committed suicide, and in non-mortal situations such as among those whose colleagues are laid off. The experience and manifestation of survivor's guilt will depend on an individual's psychological profile. When the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders IV (DSM-IV) was published, survivor guilt was removed as a recognized specific diagnosis, and redefined as a significant symptom of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
