Hmm, if my memory serves me right this is Buzz Aldrin--unless you mean the figure reflected in the visor.

i cannot see the face inside the helmet.  besides, astronauts in their full gear look the same to me. ;D

bitaw, yes, you're right...

Neil Armstrong took this photo of Buzz Aldrin walking on the Moon's surface.  Armstrong is reflected in the face plate of Aldrin's helmet.

NASA provides a further description of this photo:

Astronaut Buzz Aldrin, lunar module pilot, walks on the surface of the Moon near the leg of the Lunar Module (LM) "Eagle" during the Apollo 11 extravehicular activity (EVA).

Astronaut Neil A. Armstrong, commander, took this photograph with a 70mm lunar surface camera.

While astronauts Armstrong and Aldrin descended in the Lunar Module (LM) "Eagle" to explore the Sea of Tranquility region of the Moon, astronaut Michael Collins, command module pilot, remained with the Command and Service Modules (CSM) "Columbia" in lunar orbit. (http://www.awesomestories.com/

the english translation...

You Are

Versions: #1#2#3

Like a promise, you are, you are [to me]
Like a summer morning.
Like a smile, you are, you are [to me]
That's how, that's how, you are [that's how I perceive you]

You are like my hope, you are, you are [to me]
Like a fresh rain in my hands
Like a strong breeze, you are, you are [to me]
That's how, that's how, you are [that's how I perceive you]

You are the source of my water
You are the warmth in my home
You are (You are something like, ohhhh)
Like the fire in my fireplace (something like the fire from my fireplace)
You are (You are something like, ohhhh)
The wheat of my bread (my love, you are something like that ).

Like my poem, you are, you are [to me]
Like a guitar in the night,
you are all my horizon, you are [to me]
That's how, that's how, you are [that's how I perceive you]

You are the source of my water
You are the warmth in my home
You are (You are something like, ohhhh)
Like the fire in my fireplace (something like the fire from my fireplace)
You are (You are something like, ohhhh)
The wheat of my bread (my love, you are something like that ).

You are...

the lyrics...

Eres Tu

eres tu (algo asi eres tu ohhhh)

eres tu (algo asi eres tu ohhhh)
el trigo de mi pan (mi vida algo asi eres tu).

Eres tú...

"Eres tú" is a popular Spanish language song written in 1973 by Juan Carlos Calderón and performed by the Spanish band Mocedades, with Amaya Uranga on lead.

This song was chosen as Spain's entry in the 1973 Eurovision Song Contest.  After the song reached the second place in the contest, it was released as a single.

This song also has an English version entitled "Touch the Wind" with lyrics by Mike Hawker. (wikipedia)

Advent of Christianity diminished the power of these two Germanic gods.  They were transformed into the devil with his red hair and red beard.  Red-haired women were reputed to be witches and whores and the poppy became the devil’s flower.  Sexuality which was also associated with red was demonized in Christianity.  Mary’s hair became blonde.  Old sayings discriminated people with red hair or red beard: "Red hair, evil hair" and "Red beard - devil’s way".  Such prejudices still prevail in some rural areas of Europe.

red as the color of power eventually evolved into something else...

Negative connotation of red

Hair of Virgin Mary and the robes of Angels were depicted red in medieval paintings.  The definitely positive connotation of the color red which originated with the neolithic hunter peoples and continued with the ancient Germans starts to change around 1500.  The Germanic god Thor (other names include, Ása-Thór, Donar, Donner, Thór, Thunder, Tor) had red hair.  Red animals such as the robin, the fox and the squirel were Thor’s sacred creatures.  Beard and eyes of Wotan, the Germanic god of hunt, were fiery red too.

more about the color red (puslan man)...

Development of complex technical processes such as extracting of carmine from the cochineal insects or red dyes from the madder plant made it finally possible to achieve bright red tones.  Wearing red coats was the exclusive right of the nobility in medieval times and the red robes of kings, cardinals, judges and executioners announced their power over life and death.

interestingly, "red china" is a western term during the cold war, to distinguish mainland china from taiwan, which calls itself the "republic of china" (ROC).  the chinese (mainland) do not recognize such delineation as they regard taiwan only as a "breakaway province".  the country's official name is thus "people's republic of china" (PROC), most especially now that the majority of countries have toed the "one china policy" line.

that's why i had fun when i heard an anecdote about a diplomat who did the tables and asked his chinese counterpart, "are you from red china?"  clearly irked, the chinese diplomat answered, "china, yes.  red, no."
#30621
then i got something more about the color red...

The effect of the color red used to play an important role in politics.  Red is the most frequently used color for national flags, mostly due to its excellent visibility.  Red became the symbol of communism and socialism during the Russian Revolution in 1907.  Red color had usually a positive connotation in cold countries like Russia throughout history.  Red Army’s alternative name was "Glorious Army" and Russian words for red (krassnyj) and beautiful (krassivyj) are very similiar.  Western cultures frowned upon red color in its political sense.  "Better dead than red" was popular in cold war days in the US. Black swastika of the National Socialists was painted on red background to suggest association with the working classes. (http://www.webexhibits.org/)

Ngano tuod Red China tawag sa Tsina? Care to ressearch/explain?

i pursued this question because i am equally interested.  here's one satisfying answer (that's somewhat similar to lorenz's):

Red was used as the color of communist revolution during the collapse of Imperial Russia in the early 1900's. That's why one of the conflicts there happened between the 'White' anti-Bolshevik Russian Army and the 'Red' Communist Army. The background color of the Soviet flag was red, as was the later flag of China under Mao. (http://answers.yahoo.com/)

“Can it think?”

“Not only can it think, but it can reason and compromise,” said the Creator.

Finally, the angel bent over and ran her finger across the cheek. “There’s a leak,” she pronounced. “I told You You were trying to push too much into this model.”

“It’s not a leak,” said the Lord. “It’s a tear.”

“What’s it for?”

“It’s for joy, sadness, disappointment, pain, loneliness, and pride.”

“You are a genius,” said the angel.

The Lord looked somber. “I didn’t put it there,” He said.

“It’s not the hands that are causing me problems,” said the Lord. “It’s the three pairs of eyes that mothers have to have.”

“That’s on the standard model?” asked the angel.

The Lord nodded. “One pair that sees through closed doors when she asks, ’What are you kids doing in there?’ when she already knows. Another here in the back of her head that sees what she shouldn’t but what she has to know, and of course the ones here in front that can look at a child when he goofs up and say, ’I understand and I love you’ without so much as uttering a word.”

“Lord,” said the angel, touching His sleeve gently, “Go to bed. Tomorrow...”

“I can’t,” said the Lord, “I’m so close to creating something so close to myself. Already I have one who heals herself when she is sick... can feed a family of six on one pound of hamburger... and can get a nine-year-old to stand under a shower.”

The angel circled the model of a mother very slowly. “It’s too soft,” she sighed.

“But she’s tough!” said the Lord excitedly. “You cannot imagine what this mother can do or endure.”

i think this was already posted here at tb some two years ago.  i'm not so sure, though.  but now is a good a time as any to post this here, whether it's the second time around, or the fourth, or the nth... we all have mothers.

When God Created Mothers

by Erma Bombeck
1974

When the Good Lord was creating mothers, He was into his sixth day of “overtime” when an angel appeared and said, “You’re doing a lot of fiddling around on this one.”

And the Lord said, “Have you read the specs on this order?

    She has to be completely washable, but not plastic;
    Have 180 movable parts... all replaceable;
    Run on black coffee and leftovers;
    Have a lap that disappears when she stands up;
A kiss that can cure anything from a broken leg to a
    disappointed love affair;
    And six pairs of hands.”

The angel shook her head slowly and said, “Six pairs of hands... no way.”

pusot-pusot na man ang mga praise releases sa atong elected officials.  sugod na ang kompanya?  don't get me wrong; these releases aren't lies.  the deeds described could be real and sincere.  besides, i personally believe in the p.r. dictum that one should "do something good and tell the world about it", but the releases seem too mushy for comfort, if not too early in the campaign period.

well, voters will always be subjected to psy-war anyway.  it's up to us to allow politicians to make fools of us in their campaign to put them into office.

despite her current state, nothing can keep her from her favorite place--- beside my laptop.  sometimes, because she wants to rest her head on the keyboard, posting in tubagbohol becomes a contest for space between her and me.

her owners have been missing her.  that's why i plan to take frisky for regular visits daily for a few minutes until she is done with the 10-day recuperation and antibiotics regimen.  we will have to part ways on september 3.  sad.  but that's how things are.  :(
#30652
then i learned that the store owners have no choice but to let loose her kittens in the market in case she produced kittens.  it's not easy to home kittens.  out of every 20 people that i ask, it's enough miracle if one said yes.

so i opted to take care of frisky's spaying; prevent her from having kittens, apply the rh bill at its full force.  that's how she looks, recuperating.  that plastic collar is to prevent her from licking her stomach wound and possibly untangling the surgical thread.  she's on antibiotics too.
#30653

frisky is not so frisky

yes, her name's frisky.  i'm taking care of her while she's recuperating after getting spayed.  she's not really my cat.  but i happened to be there when she was a shaken and hungry fist-size kitten at the sidewalk.  i then brought her inside the grocery store that she was looking into.  thankfully she was accepted.

she became everybody's favorite.  customers came to pet her, including some japanese guys who always asked for her when they didn't see her.  she has the habit of sleeping right at the counter and shutting the world out, to everyone's amazement.  one can roll her on the counter and she'll pretend to be fast asleep like a log.

So: Do you know its scientific name, or at least the genus in which it belongs? Is it indeed a member of Arctiidae, or are its taxonomic affinities elsewhere? Could it even be a species still undescribed by science? Thousands of new insects are discovered every year in the South American rainforests, so it would be by no means unusual if Art's Venezuelan poodle moth proved to be one too.

If anyone can shed any light on the identity of this charming mystery moth, I'd love to hear from you. I will also pass on any details to Art, who has very kindly permitted me to prepare this ShukerNature blog post and include his singularly intriguing photograph in it â€" thanks, Art!

#30671
But could Art's Venezuelan poodle moth be a related, Neotropical species? In fact, there are over 6000 Neotropical species within Arctiidae, so this is certainly a plausible possibility.

Nevertheless, here is where the trail goes cold, as I have been unable to uncover any further information appertaining to Venezuela's very perplexing little lepidopteran.
#30672
One photo in particular that has been copied on a number of websites and labelled as the Venezuelan poodle moth is this one:

Muslin moth Diaphora mendica (© DrPhotoMoto/Flickr)

Happily, however, its original photographer, whose Flickr name is DrPhotoMoto, included within its description its species' correct identification as D. mendica (though he did also dub it as both the muslin moth and the poodle moth), and he noted that it had been snapped by him on 20 May 2009 in Richmond County, North Carolina.
#30673

An 1853 engraving of tiger moths - familiar members of the family Arctiidae (Pierre Auguste Joseph Drapiez)

Conducting some more internet searches regarding this moth, which by now had seriously begun to fascinate and frustrate me in equal measure, I came upon a few sites claiming that it was actually the muslin moth Diaphora mendica, a member of the lepidopteran family Arctiidae, which also houses the familiar tiger moths and ermine moths. There are even photos of the muslin moth online that have been labelled as poodle moths. Yet although the muslin moth bears a superficial similarity to the poodle moth, it is less furry and, in any case, is exclusively Palaearctic in distribution.
#30674
His poodle moth photograph was snapped on 1 January 2009, and appears in his 'Venezuelan Gran Sabana' photoset (click here) and also in his 'Neotropical Moths' photoset (click here). However, he had not included a scientific name for it, merely 'Poodle moth, Venezuela', together with details of the camera and photo-settings used when taking this particular macro-photograph. These were: NIKON E8700, f/6.6, 1/4000 sec, 27.3mm, ISO 50.

When I emailed Art to ask if he knew this moth's species, he informed me that he did not, and he also revealed that no other zoologist he'd spoken to knew either. Indeed, no-one had even been able to name its genus!
#30675
Happily, however, I was proven wrong, because eventually I traced the photographer responsible for this enigmatic snapshot, and discovered that he was a bona fide zoologist called Dr Arthur Anker (or Art for short), from Bishkek in Kyrgyzstan, who had snapped this picture plus many additional (and equally breathtaking) photographs of Venezuelan insects and other wildlife while visiting Venezuela during the winter of 2008/9.

These photographs formed just one set of numerous spectacular images that Art has taken while visiting tropical rainforests and other exotic locations worldwide, and which he has placed in photosets on the Flickr website (his Flickr user name is artour_a).
#30676
It was a species that I'd never seen before, so I spent quite a time researching its photograph, its name, and its supposed provenance (Venezuela) online, but, just as David had reported, nothing! The photo had appeared on countless websites recently, but with no additional details. Consequently, as someone who has exposed various hoax wildlife photographs in the past, such as those purportedly depicting genuine black lions*  and multi-headed cobras**, I naturally began to wonder whether the poodle moth was the Photoshopped creation of a poodle-faker!

On 21 August 2012, Facebook friend David Laslett drew my attention to the eyecatching and exceedingly interesting photograph opening this present ShukerNature blog post. He explained that the photo had lately appeared all over the internet, and was labelled as 'the Venezuelan poodle moth'. Yet in spite of this insect's memorable name and very unusual appearance, and although he had spent a considerable time online attempting to identify it, David had not been able to find out anything whatsoever concerning it, not even its scientific name â€" only ever more copies of this same photograph and the same name applied to its furry-limbed, white-winged subject.

Greatly intrigued, David asked me if I knew this moth's species and whether I could trace any information regarding it. And so, without further ado, and as Sherlock Holmes might well have said in such a situation, the game was afoot!

I love a challenge!!

atot ba ani... in the internet, anything goes.  it always pays to reserve judgment, extend one's disbelief, or simply keep the faith in the milk of human humor. ;D

from a known blogger of a cryptozoologist (if anyone of us here had at least 3 units of cryptozoology in college, you know what this is all about.  i haven't heard of this subject until now, honest. ;D):

As cryptozoology enthusiasts will readily testify, just a few weeks ago the internet was awash with dazzling but highly deceptive photographs of black lions. Now, the latest animal photo to beguile and bewilder everyone online is this one.

Racial slurs

In 2009, Harry came under fire following the release of a 3-year-old video in which he is seen referring to a Pakistani cadet at Sandhurst as “our little Paki friend.” Later in the video, he called an officer-in-training “a rag head.”

Harry quickly issued a statement saying he “used the term as a nickname about a highly popular member of his platoon.” But the following month, comments he made to a black comedian got him more bad press.

Harry allegedly told Stephen K. Amos, who was appearing at Prince Charles’s birthday party, that he didn’t “sound like a black chap.” Amos later recalled, “I wanted to say, ‘How is I supposed to sound?’”

Harry caught snorting ... vodka?

Prince Harry’s reputation for being a booze hound escalated when reports surfaced that he was captured on video snorting a capful of vodka. The Sun claimed it obtained footage of the 23-year-old prince swigging from the bottle, spitting it out into a bottle top, and subsequently inhaling the regurgitated shot through one nostril as friends cheered him on.

His spokesman refused to comment on the scenario, saying only that it was “a private matter.” Staying mum on the subject was likely a good move, since little could have been said to make Harry look like less of a royal fool.

'Harry the Nazi'

It was only a Halloween costume, but one would think the third in line to the British throne might have gone for something slightly less incendiary. In 2005 the 20-year-old prince was photographed at a party dressed as a German soldier and sporting a swastika on his arm. Later that week the picture appeared on the front page of The Sun with the headline, “Harry the Nazi.”

Prince Charles’s communications team immediately issued a public apology on Harry’s behalf: “I am very sorry if I have caused any offense or embarrassment to anyone. It was a poor choice of costume and I apologize.” It was another instance of the prince making a poor judgment call, and the statement did nothing to quell fierce criticism.

Politicians even piped in and called on Harry (who was officially an adult at this point) to apologize to the public himself, while a former armed-forces minister said Harry wasn’t “suitable” for Sandhurst, where he was scheduled to begin an officer training course later that year, and that were it not for his blood “the application wouldn’t be considered.

Rows with the paparazzi

At age 20, Harry was accused of “lashing out” and starting a fight with a photographer outside a London nightclub, Pangaea. A spokesman for the prince said he was just defending himself at the time.

But the photographer insisted Harry “burst out of the car and lunged towards me as I was still taking pictures … The base of the camera struck me and cut my bottom lip.” Two years later, the prince got into a similar fight outside another London club. This time he chased down a photographer but fell to the ground before going back to his car.

This photographer seemed less concerned, saying of the incident: “He obviously doesn’t like the paparazzi. If he wasn’t drunk, he’d have kept his balance, but because he’d been drinking he’s lost his balance, he’s gone down. It was one of those thingsâ€"he came out of the club, they got entangled, and he lost his footing. The guy’s on a night out, he’s going to war, good luck to him I’d say.”

oh-oh.  someone's bound to take after the controversial parent...

From The Daily Beast

Prince Harry can’t seem to stay out of trouble, not even in the sleepy town of Gila Bend, Ariz., where he’s currently completing his Apache helicopterâ€"training course. British media recently reported that Harry was cautioned by the town mayor not to be caught “fornicating the night away and drinking into the small
hours.” But town manager Rick Buss quickly came to Harry’s defense, calling the story “a total fabrication.”

Having split from Chelsy Davy earlier this year, Harry got down to sowing his wild oats. Given that he was spotted cozying up to a cocktail waitress just three weeks ago while stationed in California, reports of the town mayor’s warning don’t seem too farfetched. It certainly isn’t the first time that Prince William’s younger brother has been the subject of scandal. From his brief stint in rehab to a wildly inappropriate Halloween costume, see photos of Harry behaving badly.

Wild child

Prince Harry’s bad-boy reputation can be traced back to his teenage years, when tabloids erupted with the news that that the 16-year-old been caught drinking and smoking marijuana on several occasions. It all happened during a two-month period in the summer of 2001, when Harry had the family’s Highgrove estate to himself.

Prince Charles was none too pleased that his youngest son had made headlines for gallivanting around town, drinking with friends at local pubs, and smoking pot in their back yard, and promptly sent him to rehab after the news exploded. With regard to the cannabis, St. James Palace confirmed Harry had “experimented with the drug on several occasions,” but that his use couldn’t be described as “regular.”

Sarah Forsyth

Two years after his brief stint in rehab, Prince Harry found himself in hot water again, when a former teacher at Eton College claimed school authorities had forced her to help the young royal cheat. Sarah Forsyth, 30, claimed she did nearly all the work on an art project that Harry submitted to pass an exam in 2002 that gained him entry into Sandhurst military-training academy â€" and she had the tape recordings to prove it.

Her attorney quoted Harry as boasting about slacking on the project: “It was a tiny, tiny bit. I did about a sentence of it.” Prince Charles’s spokesman said the quotes were taken out of context, and that “the tape … contains barely audible half sentences and appears to have been edited. The fact remains Harry did not cheat."

good luck, britney.  you can move on if you totally cleanse yourself of justin timberlake's rejection.  it was so long ago, but somehow that spelled the beginning of your downward spiral.  glad you're up and about again, and ready to take a chance, again.  think less of yourself now, okay?  (hehe.  mora uroy ug makabasa si britney ani.  bitaw, this is more for other possible britneys out there, bohol version.)

this is the nepalese co-pilot.  so yes, that picture is not robredo's ill-fated plane ride, unless that co-pilot in the picture went in just for a photo op and then went out before take-off.

Speaking about Boy, i also hear that Boy Abunda wants to join politics; the Senate to be specific. :P

??? well, he's an ex-seminarian from samar.  perhaps we can at least say that his educational background is somewhat superior, unlike a couple or so senators at the moment.

a neighbor of his whom i've met said that he had to go out of the seminary because priesthood just doesn't suit him.  the reason is obvious.  will he make a good senator?  we'll never know.  but i won't be surprised if he wins, that is, if any current political party would want him.  he won't get my vote, though.  we have enough showbiz people in politics to fill our days with regret.

As a mayor of Naga City for ten years, which began when he was 28 in 1998, Robredo empowered women and poor people, ran after illegal gambling lords, and demanded reform in the Philippine National Police (PNP).

As DILG chief starting 2010, he wanted all local government leaders to undertake the fight for reform and transparency in the procurement of services and materials, using people’s money.

“He was too good to be true. That way, he had enemies,” said Crespo, adding that if Robredo shamed old traditional politicians, he also inspired young people to believe in government and in making politics a clean way to help people.

Abiding faith

It was his deep abiding faith in the possibility of good governance that made him stick to his job without true confirmation from the CA.

“At that time, I asked if my work was not yet senseless, and if the president [Beningo Aquino] still believed I could make something sensible [in the office]. [But] I cannot allow myself to walk away just because of people who do not like me to be here.”

Without giving details, he talked of dirty politics. When asked to assess politics on a national level, he said in the same interview, “I think it is dirty. The higher you go the dirtier it is I guess.”
