Back in Berryville, Blevins -- whose own mother knows a thing or two about survival, having lived through war in her native Vietnam before coming to the United States -- acknowledges "a fine line between preparation and paranoia."

But he puts his passion for prepping into context.

"Since 2000, in this state (Virginia), we've had 17 major disaster declarations, everything from the September 11 terrorist attacks to earthquakes to hurricanes to blizzards," he said.

"As a husband and a father, I want to make sure that my family is prepared, really, for anything that will come."

Patrick Troy, who is a force security instructor with the Blevins's preparedness group, poses with firearms including a M1 carbine rifle and an AR-15 rifle December 5, 2012 in Berryville, Virginia. A "prepper" describes a growing number of Americans making big plans for bad times, be it economic chaos, climate change, terrorism or natural disaster.
#30644
James Stevens, 73, alias Dr Prepper, who lives on a secluded hilltop outside San Antonio, Texas with five years' supply of food and his own water supply, has been prepping since 1974.

That was the year of the Arab oil embargo, which put paid forever to many Americans' belief in a bottomless supply of cheap energy as they lined up for hours to fill up their cars.

"You prepare for the lifestyle you'd like to maintain when things over which you have no control take control," said Stevens, who's sold 800,000 copies of his "Family Preparedness Handbook," now in its 12th edition.

The Mayan end of the world? "It's the last thing I'm worried about," Stevens told AFP by telephone. "I'm more concerned about the economic, political and moral situation."

Despite its guy-thing image, mother-of-two Lisa Bedford, whose blog TheSurvivalMom.com gives useful tips on how to weather a disaster with a brood of boisterous kids, considers prepping "a very natural fit" for women.

"We start preparing for a baby even before we start getting pregnant," said Bedford, who keeps a three-month supply of Spam, chili and peanut butter in the house, plus a survival kit in the car to hold out for 72 hours with kids.

"I want my family to be less vulnerable, no matter what happens," she added. "There is power in being proactive."

Canned food, including preserves from fruit grown on Jay Blevins' property, is seen in a pantry on December 5, 2012 in Berryville, Virginia.
#30646
Prepping enjoys a degree of tacit government endorsement: the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), on its ready.gov website, tells citizens to put together a basic disaster kit with food and water for three days.
But why stop there? Preppers can shop online for everything from a year's supply of food for one person ($1,152 from Walmart) to pre-fabricated underground bunkers to sit out a nuclear, biological or chemical attack.

In California, the Vivos Group markets luxury bunkers for anyone from a family of four ("discreetly installed just about anywhere in one week") to a community of 1,000 people outfitted for a year of survival.

"Members need to only arrive before their facility is locked down and secured from the chaos above,"
it says.

On a more modest and practical scale, 1-800-Prepare.com peddles a range of made-in-USA survival kits for individuals, families, offices, even dogs and cats -- and in the aftermath of Sandy, it's seen its sales explode ten-fold.

"My typical client is the everyday American, the mainstream consumer," said its owner, New York area volunteer firefighter Paul Faust, who turns over a slice of his post-Sandy profits to a disaster relief charity.

Firearms and training guns including an AR-15 rifle are seen in the Blevins 's garage December 5, 2012 in Berryville, Virginia. Blevins is a "prepper," one of a growing number of Americans making big plans for bad times.
#30648
Blevins is a "prepper," one of a growing number of Americans making big plans for bad times, be it economic chaos, climate change, terrorism, natural disasters like the recent Hurricane Sandy or just a very long power outage.

In contrast to go-it-alone survivalists, preppers have embraced social media, blogging and self-publishing in a big way to share knowledge and build networks in the event of TEOTWAWKI, or The End Of The World As We Know It.

Some of the more outgoing members of the movement, like Blevins, feature in season two of "Doomsday Preppers," a National Geographic Channel reality TV series, now airing worldwide.

"It's kind of this natural homegrown American thing that's just catching on with more suburbanites," said Mike Porenta of the American Preppers Network, an online forum for local prepper meet-up groups all over the United States.
#30649
The Mayan end of the world is the last thing on Jay Blevins' mind, but if it happens, he and his family are more than ready for it.

In the basement of their comfortable home in this small town in the Shenandoah Valley, an hour's drive from Washington, there's a walk-in pantry packed with canned and preserved foods as well as medical supplies.
"We could survive for quite a while just on this stuff," Blevins said.

Out in the backyard where fruits and berries grow, barrels of fresh water stand under the eaves. Safely locked away is a small arsenal of pistols and semi-automatic rifles, all the better to hunt game and scare off looters.

And if the Blevins should have to make tracks, every member of the family has their own "bug-out bag" -- a backpack filled with on-the-road essentials from a katana samurai sword to toys and games for the kids.
"I don't think we've spent too much money. I don't think we've gone overboard," father-of-three Blevins, 35, a business consultant and former deputy sheriff and SWAT team officer, told AFP.

-- 'It's just like insurance' --

"We have our normal life, and then we have this thing on the side. It's just like insurance -- if we ever need it, we'll use it."

December 17, 2012, 05:17:49 PM
Order a non-alcoholic drink between each alcoholic one. This works particularly well if you are drinking spirits, as you can simply order the mixer without the spirit, and no one will know!

If you have overindulged when you get home try not to pass out, stay up for a while and find something to do. Your metabolism slows down when you're asleep, so your body takes longer to dispose of all that alcohol â€" this is how hangovers happen.

Have a snack before going to bed â€" a slice of wholemeal toast and honey is ideal. Honey contains potassium which helps to counteract the effects of the alcohol.

Finally prevention is always better than cure â€" just pace yourself to stay in a merry mood and when you are drunk just stop!

December 17, 2012, 05:14:22 PM
Don’t drink on an empty stomach â€" this will slow the rate at which alcohol can be metabolised. Try to have a small meal or snack before you hit the party. Bar snacks like crisps and peanuts will just make you thirstier.

Check the label of any medication you are taking to ensure it doesn’t react adversely with alcohol.

Stick to clearer-coloured drinks to minimise the effects of a hangover. Red wine is one of the worst offenders, as are dark spirits like whisky, brandy and rum.

Stick to one drink! Switching from vodka to wine and then to beer is a recipe for oblivion â€" and a thudding headache the next day.

Watch your portion size! A ‘small’ glass of wine in a bar or pub these days is often 175ml â€" and a large is 250ml, which is actually the equivalent of a third of a bottle of wine.

The sundae is then suffused with candied persimmons, pineapple, peach, and currants, almonds dipped in gold, marzipan cherries and small blocks of criollo chocolate, which is farmed only on the Venezuelan coast. Then a fan of gold leaf is placed on top, along with a dash of gold flake, and a few sugar-paste floral garnishes that take 18 hours to sculpt. It is served with a 24-karat gold-plated spoon inlaid with real diamonds, which you get to take home along with the gold-lined, crystal goblet â€" all for $1,000.

In case you’re wondering: yes, you will defecate gold.

This dessert is sold exclusively at Serendipity 3, in New York City. The restaurant is famous for selling you anything you want, even the chair you’re sitting in. Everything in the building has a little price tag on it. They will not sell ownership of the restaurant, of course. They are known for their hot dogs and iced desserts, and invented the sundae in question in 2004.

You must give at least 48 hours’ notice when ordering one, so the ingredients can be acquired. Different sources report 3 and 5 scoops of vanilla ice cream. The vanilla beans are flown in from Tahiti and Madagascar, topped with 23-karat gold leaf, then drizzled with Amedei Porcelana, which touts itself as the world’s most expensive chocolate.

In the video below you will see Ultra-Orthodox Jewish men going wild while dancing to the new Jewish "Gangnam Style" song. The lyrics are mostly in Yiddish with some English as well.

Ultra-Orthodox Jewish singer Avrumy Kalish and Tuli Brull became known as singers and songwriters.

They specialize in songs for Ultra-Orthodox Jewish brides and grooms for their wedding, rocking the house with blessings such as a good life like a real “love story”.

Most of their music is done by taking popular non-Jewish songs and adding their own lyrics as a parody. Since most Jewish people do not listen to non-Jewish music, they think that the pair authored the song all by themselves.

Many "Gangnam Style" parodies have popped up around the web, after the official PSY video was released. Now Ultra-Orthodox Jews made a, "Gangnam Style” video for the wedding of Eli and Sury Lenorowitz.

The ‘POP-UP’2010 is street-furniture that can be pumped out of the pavement by the inhabitants. The ‘POP-UP’ is a result of a collaboration of Carmela Bogman and Rogier Martens.

In the quarter Lombok in the city of Utrecht, The Netherlands the first Pop-Up was placed. ‘POP-UP’ is a street furniture that can be pumped out of the pavement by the inhabitants. After use it can be pumped back and it will disappear into the pavement. This means that the inhabitants have the freedom to decide for themselves, when they want to use the Pop-Up and in which way.

By using several sheets that can be fixed at any height, the choice is up to you whether you want to create a bench,  a stage or a lounge area. The possibilities are endless. The Pop-Up blurs the boundaries between public and private. After using the Pop-Up it is pumped back into the pavement creating a peaceful street scene without any obstacles. But if you feel like using the Pop-up, all the ingredients are right there on the street.

A little girl was sold by her parents to an old man for just $18, according to police reports.

The British girl, 11-years-old, was allegedly pimped out as a prostitute by her parents for $18 each time.

Police arrested the couple on the resort island of Majorca, amid allegations they sold the girl, now 15, to a 76-year-old, in exchange of money for a period of five years.

It is understood that the mother took her daughter to meet the man each time, with varying amounts changing hands between $17 and $19, according to press reports.

The child was apparently ordered to leave her home, where she was cared for by another couple and she was delivered to the pensioner who sexually abused her after being locked in a room.

The victim was raped each time, according to press reports.

Reports say that the girl's parents were charged with corruption of a minor, sexual assault and encourage their daughter to escape her home.

The 76-year-old, who is said to suffer from health problems related to age, was charged with sexual assault and all three suspects appeared before a judge who released them on bail while the investigation continues.

Narcissistic people, by compensation theory, mute the feelings of low self-esteem by:

•talking "highly"
•contacting "highly admired" persons

Narcissistic children try to compensate for their jealousy and anger by:

•fantasizing about power
•fantasizing about beauty
•fantasizing about richness

Origin

Alfred Adler, founder of the school of individual psychology, introduced the term compensation in relation to inferiority feelings.

In his book Study of Organ Inferiority and Its Physical Compensation (1907) he describes this relationship: If one feels inferior (weak) he / she (usually) tries to compensate for it somewhere else.

Adler's motivation to investigate this was from personal experience. He was a very sickly child. He was unable to walk till he was four because of rickets. Then he was victim of pneumonia as well as a series of accidents.

Adler also "transferred" this idea of compensation to psychic training.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In psychology, compensation is a strategy whereby one covers up, consciously or unconsciously, weaknesses, frustrations, desires, or feelings of inadequacy or incompetence in one life area through the gratification or (drive towards) excellence in another area. Compensation can cover up either real or imagined deficiencies and personal or physical inferiority. The compensation strategy, however does not truly address the source of this inferiority. Positive compensations may help one to overcome one's difficulties. On the other hand, negative compensations do not, which results in a reinforced feeling of inferiority. There are two kinds of negative compensation:

Overcompensation, characterized by a superiority goal, leads to striving for power, dominance, self-esteem, and self-devaluation.

Undercompensation, which includes a demand for help, leads to a lack of courage and a fear for life.
