Finally, we come to the version of the phrase that we English might imagine is the 'proper' original version.  This appears to be neither original or English as it is later than the versions above, and the first mention that I can find of it also hails from north of the border.  Catherine Sinclair, the Scottish novelist and children's writer, wrote a novel of fashionable society life, Modern Accomplishments, or the march of intellect, in 1838:

"As for your father's good-humoured jests being ever taken up as a serious affair, it really is like raising a storm in a teacup."

-from The meaning and origin of the expression: Tempest in a teapot, http://www.phrases.org.uk/
#30522
Also, before the 'teacup/teapot' versions were well-established, another nobleman came up with a version that didn't involve the tea-table at all. The Gentleman's Magazine, 1830, records:

"Each campaign, compared with those of Europe, has been only, in Lord Thurlow's phrase, a storm in a wash-hand basin."

'Tempest in a teapot' is the version that is used most often in the USA, and hardly at all in other places, but which nevertheless appears to have a Scottish rather than an American origin. Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine, 1825, included a debate over the relative merits of the Scottish poets James Hogg and Tom Campbell. Campbell's imagery of raging tempests in his poetic work wasn't well received there:

What is the 'tempest raging o'er the realms of ice'?  A tempest in a teapot!

tempest in a teapot (or teacup)

very, very interesting, this one.  after all, it's not only man or tubagbohol.com that evolves.  words and phrases do, too.

Meaning

A small or unimportant event that is over-reacted to, as if it were of considerably more consequence.

Origin

Readers from England might well be tut-tutting about the mangling of their perfectly good phrase 'a storm in a teacup' and castigating the American 'tempest in a teapot' as a newcomer, having little more reason to exist than its neat alliteration.

In fact, the teacup wasn't the first location of the said storm, nor was the teapot.  The phrase probably derives from the writing of Cicero, in De Legibus, circa 52BC.  The translation of his "Excitabat fluctus in simpulo" is often given as "He was stirring up billows in a ladle".  Other cultures have versions of the phrase in their own languages.  The translation of the Netherlands version is 'a storm in a glass of water', and the Hungarian 'tempest in a potty'.

Whether the first user of the expression in English had Cicero in mind, he made no mention of tea-making, although he wasn't so far away.  The Duke of Ormond's letters to the Earl of Arlington, 1678, include this:

"Our skirmish seems to be come to a period, and compared with the great things now on foot, is but a storm in a cream bowl."

The Tempest is a play by William Shakespeare, believed written in 1610â€"11, and thought by many critics to be the last play that Shakespeare wrote alone.  It is set on a remote island, where Prospero, the rightful Duke of Milan, plots to restore his daughter Miranda to her rightful place using illusion and skillful manipulation.  He conjures up a storm, the eponymous tempest, to lure his usurping brother Antonio and the complicit King Alonso of Naples to the island.  There, his machinations bring about the revelation of Antonio's low nature, the redemption of the King, and the marriage of Miranda to Alonso's son, Ferdinand. the tornado scene of the 1939 movie the wizard of oz

how the sequence was made at a time when computer generation wasn't even in the english vocabulary yet:

TORNADO PROCEDURE

For the tornado used in the Kansas farm sequence, a Gantry Crane travelling the length of Stage #14 was hung from the bottom of roof trusses.  The Gantry car supported a canvas cone in the shape of a tornado which was rotated by a D.C. motor on a speed control. The motor assembly was arranged to tip sideways and was controlled from the car together with its cross travel.  The approach was fastened to a car travelling on a predetermined track and containing the arrangement for dust.  This car was moved by operators below the set.  The set was built on a platform and was 3/4 scale.  The sky was projected moving foreground glasses.  Air was piped around the set for wind effects.  Wind machines were also used. Tornado

A tornado is a violent, destructive wind storm occurring on land. Usually its appearance is that of a dark, funnel-shaped cyclone. Often tornadoes are preceded by a thunderstorm and a wall cloud. They are often called the most destructive of storms, and while they form all over the world, the interior of the United States is the most prone area, especially throughout Tornado Alley. Storm

A storm is any disturbed state of an astronomical body's atmosphere, especially affecting its surface, and strongly implying severe weather.

Kinds of storms:

    Ice storm
    Blizzard
    Snowstorm
    Ocean Storm
    Firestorm
    Dust devil
    Wind storm
    Squall
    Gale
    Thunderstorm
    Tropical cyclone
    Hailstorm
    Tornado

it turns out that a cyclone is a kind of storm.
#30532
cyclone (lower case letter c) is the generic term for this weather disturbance (ugh, i better call it natural disaster).  its location spells the difference in names.  thus:

Cyclone    - Indian Ocean
Hurricane - Eastern North Pacific
Typhoon  - Northwest Pacific
#30533
Typhoon

A typhoon is a mature tropical cyclone that develops in the northwestern part of the Pacific Ocean between 180° and 100°E.  This region is referred to as the northwest Pacific basin.

For organizational purposes, the northern Pacific Ocean is divided into three regions: the eastern (North America to 140°W), central (140°W to 180°), and western (180° to 100°E).  Identical phenomena in the eastern north Pacific are called hurricanes, with tropical cyclones moving into the western Pacific re-designated as typhoons.

The Regional Specialized Meteorological Center (RSMC) for tropical cyclone forecasts is in Japan, with other tropical cyclone warning centers for the northwest Pacific in Honolulu (the Joint Typhoon Warning Center), the Philippines, and Hong Kong.

While the RSMC names each system, the main name list itself is coordinated amongst 18 countries, including the United States, who have territories threatened by typhoons each year.  The Philippines uses their own naming list for systems which approach the country. (wikipedia)
#30534
cyclone/Cyclone

In meteorology, a cyclone is an area of closed, circular fluid motion rotating in the same direction as the Earth.  This is usually characterized by inward spiraling winds that rotate counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere of the Earth. Most large-scale cyclonic circulations are centered on areas of low atmospheric pressure. (wikipedia)

A Cyclone is a cyclone in the Indian Ocean.

#30536
most welcome, fr chic.  i hope everything's fine and safe there with you in new orleans where the house of the rising sun is.
#30537
thus:

Hurricane

A hurricane is a tropical cyclone, occurring in the North Atlantic Ocean or the Northeast Pacific Ocean, east of the International Dateline.

Hurricanes generally form in the equilateral area of the Atlantic, and due to the wind patterns, travel into the Caribbean, the Gulf of Mexico, and up the east U.S. coast.

-excerpts from wikipedia and http://answers.yahoo.com/
#30538
These terms can be confusing because of how they are used.  Technically, a cyclone (lower case) is ANY rotating low pressure system (rotating counter-clockwise in the northern hemisphere, or clockwise in the southern hemisphere).  Hurricanes, Typhoons and Cyclones (note upper case) are the same thing but are termed by where they exist.  The tropical cyclone is called a hurricane (if sustained winds are at least 65 knots) over the Atlantic basin and the eastern Pacific Ocean, while over the western Pacific it is called a Typhoon.  The same type of system is called a Cyclone over the Indian Ocean area.

A tornado is another type of cyclone that is born in thunderstorms.  In some cases, tropical cyclones can produce many tornadoes if conditions are right. (an answer by a meteorologist, http://answers.yahoo.com/)

Isaac thrashes New Orleans, overtops levee

August 29, 2012
FoxNews.com

Authorities say a storm surge driven by Hurricane Isaac is overtopping a levee in a thinly populated part of mostly rural Plaquemines Parish, south of New Orleans.

Parish spokeswoman Caitlin Campbell said water was running over an 18-mile stretch of the levee early Wednesday and some homes had been flooded.

Sheriff's deputies from St. Bernard and Plaquemines parishes were going house-to-house looking for residents who'd remained after an evacuation order.

During the Communist regime, monks were cast out of Spassky Church and the last hermit, known as Father Pyotr, was shot there. But the place was so well-known in the area that Christians still came to pray in the rock church, so in 1960 Nikita Khrushchev gave an order to flood the church to stop people from coming back, but not even that was enough to keep people away from this ancient place of worship. The first free official religious service at Spassky Church was held in 1993, and in 1997 a group of nuns made it their home.  Since then the entire cave complex in the Kostomarovo was reconstructed and roads were built to make access to this place easier.

Those who have visited Spassky Church speak of a fantastic sense of easiness and divine bliss, and it also has a reputation for healing diseases and wounds, helping people make the right decisions and cleansing sins. In fact, there is even a Cave of Repentance inside the chalk church where condemned sinners were once confined to repent for their sins. The sense of easiness may also be influenced by the beautiful natural surroundings that the locals believe look so much like the Holy Land that they named them after it. There is a hill of Golgotha, a Mount Tabor and even a Gethsemane Garden.

Spassky Church
Kostomarovo, Russia
ca. 12th century

Dug into the cretaceous rocks known as “diva” in the Voronezh region, this unique holy place has a rugged exterior that hints at Byzantine influences, but its interior is much more polished, featuring straight walls, rounded arches and Orthodox decorations. It can accommodate 2,000 people and welcomes thousands of pilgrims from all over Russia every year.

It doesn’t happen very often, but people do grow horns. They’re called cutaneous horns and they are the result of a wide range of epidermal lesions. According to the World Journal of Surgical Oncology, cutaneous horns appear in men over 55 and women over 65. Rare as these cases may be, cutaneous horns have been around for quite some time, with the first documented case appearing in the 1500s.

I want to help her again so I was thinking of buying her ukay ukay clothes pero naunhan ko sa tindera sa ukay-ukayan kay ni offer siya.. but she was totally ignored by this woman.. she continued walking (i was walking behind her about 5 meters away kay lagi mopalit ko ug call card) i want to know what she's thinking while people were laughing at her seeing her naked, children teases her..i want to know, unsa iyang gihunahuna...... then i saw her going to church pero sa gate pa lang daan, gisita na siya sa caretaker...nibalik siya sa iyang agi ug nipasilong, naglingkod sa usa ka waiting shed nga tapad ra pod sa simbahan...samtang ako, nisakay na ug pedicab pabalik sa opis...

what a gripping story, lolla.  from the looks of it, it was grief and hunger that did her in.  pagkalooy intawon.  barato ra ra ba unta ang tambal aning nalisoan tungod sa pasmo.  hinaot unta nga masikop na siya sa dswd aron di na hilabtan ug di na madisgrasya.  we can only pray and wish her well.

isles, how was your trip to the vet's office? how is everything over there in manila?

fine i guess, thanks.  at least i came back home in one piece.  the usual terrible road trip in manila, you know; got stuck in a traffic jam for awhile.  and there was some rain.

frisky the cat is a pity.  she'll be on antibiotics for 10 days.  imagine grappling with her twice daily just to make her swallow the medicine and keep her from licking her surgical wound.  she's doing fine, fortunately.

Bwahaha! If that's how you sang the US anthem, your Lord's prayer must have included the phrase "and lead a snot into temptation..." ;D

that is hubag territory.  you must have heard about the fable of hubag and his magic snot. ;D

pag-abot sa may bool, nakit-an mi sa akong brother.  nakatilaw kog dressing down pag-uli sa balay.  lupig pa kuno nakoy laki gawas nga pista girl pa gyod.

midweek pa nipauli si father dear gikan sa cebu pakahibawo sa estorya.  what else.  aron lang ko kasab-an.  giigihan pa ko, for the second time.  "paddle your own canoe" if you did that again, matod pa niya.  molayas ko basta naa koy bawon, tubag ko.  paskang budlata sa iyang mata sa akong tinubagan.  kun di pa kuno ko dalaga na, latos gyod kuno nga wa dinhi wa didto.  gimingaw man lang hinoon ko sa among father dear ani, he who had declared that i'm the one who gave him the most trouble and the most happiness of all his children.

no regrets here.  i would have regretted it if i kept thinking until now how it feels to hold on to a bus for dear life.  i can say, "been there, done that", and that's quite enough.  i don't have to go bungee jumping anymore. ;D

"gentian moon"?  what dat?
#30596
as for "egyptian moon"...

it goes back all the way to ancient egypt.  while the sun takes precedence over the moon to the ancient egyptians, the two are regarded as "the two lights", with many divinities attributed to both.

why "egyptian moon" happened to be in that old unremembered love song that i heard must because of the ancient egyptians' belief that the moon symbolizes renewal.

In time, the moon became a symbol of rejuvenation, and given it's cycle, this is understandable.  Later texts in fact describes it as "the one that repeats its form".  Sometimes lunar gods were depicted as youths, though the entire lunar cycle could be compared to the life cycle of a man.  It could also represent the old man who becomes once more, a child.  During the New Kingdom, a pharaoh might be declared "young as the moon", and Amenhotep III fully identifies himself with the moon in his temple at Soleb. solved, aside from the obvious fact that "august moon" must be in august and not in december...

August Moon is a Chinese reference to the 15th night of the eighth month in the Chinese calender. It is short for the August Moon festival, an annual Chinese celebration.

Origins

The August Moon Festival involves worshiping the moon, a tradition that has existed since around 2000 B.C. It is called "Xi Yue" in Chinese.

Harvest

August Moon became harvest festival, due to its occurrence during the harvest season. Chinese pastries called mooncakes are the most popular food items eaten during this celebration.

Moon Significance

The moon is considered at its brightest and roundest during the festival, thus the name. Several Chinese legends exist that involve the moon as the central character.

Connections

The moon's brightness during the August Moon Festival is credited with nurturing or forming friendships or relationships.

Mid-Autumn Festival

An alternate name for August Moon is the Mid-Autumn Festival. It is actually more appropriate than the term "August Moon" since according to the Western calendar, the festival takes place between the second week of September and the second week of October instead of August.

i heard it in an old song; remembering the song is like remembering in snatches my primordial touchstone.  i never heard the song again nor do i know the title nor the exact lyrics.  none at all except for the term "egyptian moon".
