“Why is he taking up a fight sa akong sister, babaye man ni?” matud pang Byron.

(BANAT NEWS)

Picture this: it’s deep winter in the far north. Harry Jenkins and his two buddies go ice fishing one day at Ten Mile Lake in Akeley, Minnesota. The lake is completely iced over.

In an attempt to quickly create a large hole for fishing, Mr. Jenkins first lights, then tosses, a stick of illegally obtained dynamite across the ice.

To his horror, his pet dog Jerry, a Labrador retriever (doh!) races across the ice in an attempt to retrieve the dynamite â€" thinking that his master is throwing a stick for him. This isn’t going to end well, is it?

The dog picks up the dynamite â€" despite screams from the men â€" then starts to run back towards them with a wagging tail. The three men realize they’re in worse danger than they thought, so they begin to run for their lives in the opposite direction, with the dog chasing them.

The men narrowly escape death â€" but the explosion not only blows up the dog; it also cracks the ice near the truck, which then sinks through the surface and plunges to the bottom of the lake.

In addition to losing his dog, Mr. Jenkins became a double loser when the insurance company refused to pay on his claim for the sunken truck.

Not ideal, let’s face it. -- http://listverse.com/

(philstar.com) | Updated January 6, 2013 - 3:50am

DUBAI (AP) â€" Dubai is sometimes called the "City of Gold" because of its stunning growth from a sleepy Gulf port to a world-famous business crossroads in the space of a single generation. Its nickname has a literal meaning for traders in the precious metal.

The city is building itself up as a center for the gold trade, between sources in Africa and consumers in the rising economies of China and India.

Dubai now has about a 29 percent market share of global gold trade with nearly 1,200 tons â€" worth about $41 billion â€" changing hands at the city's gold markets, according to the gold industry website bullionstreet.com.

That's up from around $6 billion worth traded in the emirate in 2003, said Malcolm Wall Morris, CEO of Dubai Multi Commodities Centre, set up by the emirate to oversee the trade. "There's no doubt the geographical location of Dubai has played an important factor," he said.

Dubai's tax-free status has made it one of the cheapest places to buy gold in the world. The emirate has set up gold refineries and vaults and jewelry-making facilities, importing gold â€" including scrap from India â€" and melting it down to produce gold bars. At the Dubai Gold and Commodities Exchange, traders and speculators buy and sell the metal on the futures market.

Gold prices remained relatively steady in 2012, close to $1,700 an ounce. Some traders predict prices could once again rise toward the record high of nearly $1,900 an ounce, as central governments and investors look to gold as a safe bet in the unsteady world economy.

The city has also become a retail center with 600 shops selling gold â€" half of them crammed into the gold souq, drawing tourists, traders and local residents.

Lola Oyekola, from Lagos, Nigeria, came to Dubai especially to buy gold.

"Because I know I will get what I want, unique ones," she said. "I can tell them what I want and they will make it for me."

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration uses its own naming scheme for tropical cyclones in their area of responsibility. PAGASA assigns names to tropical depressions that form within their area of responsibility and any tropical cyclone that might move into their area of responsibility. Should the list of names for a given year prove to be insufficient, names are taken from an auxiliary list, the first 10 of which are published each year before the season starts. The names not retired from this list will be used again in the 2017 season. This is the same list used in the 2009 season, except for Odette and Paolo which replaced Ondoy and Pepeng respectively.

70-anyos gipatay sa apo
Ni Darrel A. Carumba/EIM (Banat) | Updated January 6, 2013 - 12:00am

(BANAT NEWS)

Asia | Middle East / Re: Shark fins trade
January 06, 2013, 10:40:42 AM
Though it’s not illegal to posses and sell fins in China, most traders keep their operations at least somewhat private to avoid negative PR. Asked how he was able to obtain his vantage point Hofford responded, via email: “Evading security guards, running up and down dusty stair cases, climbing up rusty ladders, and general low-level paranoia!”

The photojournalist blogged: “The front line in the war against the shark fin trade has shifted from the sidewalks to the roof tops. The theory goes that after being exposed at street level, they have now sought to move their activities out of the public eye to avoid further backlash.”

Hofford states on his blog that traders have taken to using rooftops instead of ground-level markets to dry their fins out of public view: “I’m now of the opinion that this place has been operating for a very long time, and it’s only in the last three days that their activities have come to light.”

China is the world’s largest shark fin market and Hong Kong is a hub through which many fins pass. Hofford focused his camera on a specific location: Kwong Ga Factory Building, 64 Victoria Rd., Kennedy Town.

Stunning Find On An Oceanfront Rooftop
Friday, January 4, 2013 17:00
http://beforeitsnews.com/

The number of shark fins set out to dry like the morning laundry on a Hong Kong factory building rooftop is staggering. To look at the accompanying images and video, revealing perhaps 10,000 fins, and to grasp that sharks are being slaughtered at a furious pace so their fins can be used to make soup, one cannot help but wonder how many years will pass before at least some shark species are banished to extinction.

Shark conservation movements are growing, especially regarding the cruel practice of finning, but the striking imagery supplied by photojournalist Alex Hofford illustrates that conservation efforts, while they have made progress, have a long away to go toward stemming the killing of sharks for their fins.
