you're too much of an amboy when you pick comparisons, mon tulfs.  can't blame you, though.  but remember that the pentagon isn't secure either.  it was hit by an airplane during that tragic 9/11, right?  as for you, you yourself weren't safe at an airport not so long ago.  so please, get off your high horse.

However, I have my own opinion about the Cheshire Cat in Alice in Wonderland, which speaks in riddles and forces children to think about what's real and what isn't. It's the only character who listens to young Alice and tries to help her learn the rules of life in this mad world. This mysterious creature is almost certainly a mouthpiece for a certain Charles Dodgson, aka Lewis Carroll, the author of the book. He's the real Cheshire cat. (http://mazzybolero.hubpages.com/)

My [the author's] Conclusions

This last explanation is mundane - and who needs that? We all like a good story. However, I have to admit that this could be the most likely origin of the phrase "grinning like a Cheshire cat". These cats do look as if they are grinning, as you can see from the video. Unfortunately, it's a Russian video, but it's all I can find. You get the idea. (http://mazzybolero.hubpages.com/)

so there's a place in england named cheshire, and there are cats.  but do cheshire cats really grin?  out of 7 answers that tried to explain this idiom, this one is the most believable:

It's a Breed of Cat

There is a breed of cat originally known as the Dorset blue. This breed has a face with an upturned mouth that appears to be constantly smiling. Of course, the cat is not really smiling at all; it might be downright miserable, but it certainly looks amused. Sometime during the first part of the 18th Century, someone brought some of these cats from Dorset in the South West of England up to Cheshire in the North West, where they really thrived. In fact, they became so common in that county that they were referred to as Cheshire blue cats, or simply Cheshire cats.

They do appear to smile, but they are not blue - not in color, anyway. They may be feeling blue, possibly because everyone assumes they’re happy when they’re not. (http://mazzybolero.hubpages.com/)

A possible origin of the phrase "Grinning like a Cheshire Cat" is from the large number of dairy farms in Cheshire, hence the cats grin because of the abundance of milk and cream. This is the explanation most favoured by the people of Cheshire. (wikipedia)

i just learned that this sharon cuneta ad became controversial early last year.  the outfit (marie france) stood by her.  so did the photographer who publicly denied that the image was photoshopped.  but the reading public was more skeptical, especially when there's such a thing as "truth in advertising".

The Megastar for Marie France: Fact or Fiction?
02/05/11

I really, really want to believe that Sharon Cuneta has truly  won the battle of the bulge this time around with Marie France, but frankly, I'm skeptical.

Check out the before and after photos from Marie France:

Before- no makeup which usually translates to a puffier look; After- heavily made up, features are contoured, creating the look of sharper angles.

Before- hair is natural looking; not styled; After- hair is poker straight AND styled to hide her cheeks, resulting in a thinner looking face.

Before- blouse is loose and shapeless; After- blouse is form-fitting and cinched at the waist, ergo, a more defined figure.

Before- standing with legs apart, thus, creating a wider frame; After- legs are crossed with hips facing forward for a leaner silhouette.

My point is, I believe that the Megastar may have lost some weight, but definitely not as much as the Marie France spin doctors are proclaiming. Maybe they should have waited for 5-6 more months before launching this campaign, when the weight loss is more dramatic?

on second thoughts...

Is alkaline water better for you than plain water?

Answer
from Katherine Zeratsky, R.D., L.D.

For most people, plain water is best.

Because alkaline water has a higher pH level than does plain tap water, proponents say that it can neutralize acid in your bloodstream, boost your metabolism and help your body absorb nutrients more effectively. Some even say that alkaline water can help prevent disease and slow the aging process. However, researchers haven't verified these claims.

Some studies suggest that alkaline water may help slow bone loss, but further investigation is needed to determine if this influences overall bone mineral density and if the benefit is maintained over the long term.

i just have to read up on this.  not only is the recipe so easy, i also expect that one more gimmick that could whip a storm in the bottled water business would be alkaline water.  the basic finds:

Top 3 Alkaline Water Benefits

1) Beneficial Antioxidant Properties

Alkaline water has antioxidant properties that help counteract free radicals. These free radicals can lead to pre-mature aging and other various conditions. The antioxidants being in liquid form allow for a quicker absorption into the system. So the benefits are markedly obvious since ionized water has anti-aging and anti-disease properties. It is also believed that some elements in this water drinking water can help develop cancer resistance.

2) Cleansing Features

Other ionized alkaline water benefits are that it helps to cleanse the organs and is particularly effective in cleansing the colon. As unclean elements cling to and build up within the colon, over time they can become poisonous and even lethal. Using ionized water can safely and easily remove these fecal matters. It can remove build up that is weeks or even years old leading to a more effective and thorough elimination process. This can help decrease the recurrence of unhealthy constipation issues.

3) Improves Physical Appearance

Along with cleansing the body’s inner systems alkaline water also rejuvenates the skin and keeps it hydrated. It helps the skin replace tissues and contributes its elasticity and overall health. It can also help detoxify the skin causing it to appear smoother and leading to fewer breakouts. (no author's name)

“Here are Johnny Keats’ piss-a-bed poetry, and three novels by God knows whom… No more Keats, I entreat: flay him alive; if some of you don’t I must skin him myself: there is no bearing the drivelling idiotism of the Mankin.”

Lord Byron             John Keats

26. Vladimir Nabokov on Fyodor Dostoevsky

“Dostoevky’s lack of taste, his monotonous dealings with persons suffering with pre-Freudian complexes, the way he has of wallowing in the tragic misadventures of human dignity â€" all this is difficult to admire.”

Health and Food / Re: 7 Dangerous Acts After Eating
September 03, 2012, 03:31:02 PM
as the dr. adrian wong shared the email that he got by posting it, he himself debunked these claims by posting in the same forum his own answer to that email, as follows:

This was what I wrote back :

Seriously, this e-mail is what’s REALLY dangerous!

Not a single piece of advice is fact.

1. Smoke after a meal because the bad effect (emphysema, cancer, etc.) of smoking a cigarette becomes ten times worse?

Smoking cigarettes is harmful to your health at any time. Cigarettes contain as many as 60 carcinogens (substances known to cause cancer), and the nicotine in cigarettes is highly addictive. The addictive nature of nicotine leads smokers to continue smoking, and makes quitting very difficult. The risk of cancer and emphysema is certainly related to what kind and how many cigarettes you smoke, but there is no good evidence that smoking after meals in particular increases this risk.

2. Do not eat fruits immediately after meals because it will bloat your stomach?

Nuts! Fruits can be eaten anytime before or after meals. In fact, it’s a great way to obtain fibre (bulk) and reduce the intake of food â€" for those who want to cut down on calories.

3. Do not drink tea after a meal as tea leaves contain a high content of acid?

So what? Your stomach produces its own hydrochloric acid anyway. Acid helps BREAK DOWN protein, not harden it. It also activates stomach enzymes which break protein into amino acids. Remember, after a meal, your stomach will be full of food. So what little acid you get from tea is inconsequential.

Do note that tannic acid from tea will stimulate acid secretion so it’s best taken with or after meals. That’s why we have dim sum when we yum cha la!

4. Do not loosen the belt after eating because it can cause intestinal problems?

Seriously, this is utter nonsense. Keeping your belt tight will increase abdominal pressure and possibly increase the risk of acid reflux into the oesophagus. If anything, a tight belt will cause intestinal problems!

5. Do not bathe after eating because it will weaken the digestive system in the stomach?

After a meal, more blood will automatically be diverted to the intestines to absorb the nutrients. Having a bath or not will not affect digestion or absorption of nutrients. Neither will exercise.

6. Do not walk after a meal because it will make it difficult for the digestive system to absorb the nutrition?

Can we all say “utter nonsense”? Together and loudly please!

Walking is good, no matter whether it’s before or after meals. Nutrition will get absorbed, no matter whether you sit still like a statue or walk about.

In fact, walking can reduce heart burn and reduce the surge in plasma glucose levels after a meal â€" good for diabetics.

7. Do not sleep immediately after a meal because the food will not be digested properly?

Food will be digested whether you are asleep or awake. Sleeping will not cause digestion problems. However, sleeping after a meal is bad because it can cause heartburn, and can lead to obesity.

8. Finally, please forward this e-mail to the very same people you forwarded that PowerPoint presentation to. Do your part to kill this kind of nonsensical e-mails.

Health and Food / Re: 7 Dangerous Acts After Eating
September 03, 2012, 03:18:55 PM
posted on the internet as passed on by email:

DON'T ACT THE 7 ACTIONS BELOW AFTER YOU HAVE A MEAL ...

*Experiment from experts proves that smoking a cigarette after meal is comparable to smoking 10 cigarettes (chances of cancer is higher).

* Don't eat fruits immediately - Immediately eating fruits after meals will cause stomach to be bloated with air. Therefore take fruit 1-2 hr after meal or 1hr before meal.

* Don't drink tea - Because tea leaves contain a high content of acid. This substance will cause the Protein content in the food we consume to be hardened thus difficult to digest.

* Don't loosen your belt - Loosening the belt after a meal will easily cause the intestine to be twisted & blocked.

* Don't bathe - Bathing after meal will cause the increase of blood flow to the hands, legs & body thus the amount of blood around the stomach will therefore decrease. This will weaken the digestive system in our stomach.

* Don't walk about - People always say that after a meal walk a hundred steps and you will live till 99. In actual fact this is not true. Walking will cause the digestive system to be unable to absorb the nutrition from the food we intake.

*Don't sleep immediately - The food we intake will not be able to digest properly. Thus will lead to gastric & infection in our intestine.

FINALLY DONT JUST KEEP THIS INFORMATION . . ..
PLEASE FORWARD IT TO YOUR FRIENDS. LET THEM BE AWARE...........

unfortunately, it's the punished sailor who is supposed to be skinned by the cat-o-nine tails, so how come the phrase is "skin the cat"?  the answer must be somewhere out there.  in the vastness of space.
#30380
In England we use the term 'not enough room to swing a cat' to describe a small space or somewhere where there is little room to move. The nine strands (tails) of the 'cat' were knotted and it ripped the skin off the back of the poor unfortunate it was used on.  No doubt there was skill in using it properly and in the different types of strokes employed to achieve the punishment.

I assume that the meaning of the phrase (more than one way...), which is that there is more than one way to approach a problem or issue refers to different techniques that could be deployed in the flogging and therefore taking the skin off the back of the sailor being punished. Presumably some of the flayed skin stuck to the the Cat-o-nine tails! (no author with internet name given for this answer)

the best answer (just because i can bear it)...

My understanding of this phrase is linked to the similar ones, 'not enough room to swing a cat' and that's 'let the cat out of the bag'.

I don't have any reference for them other than I come from a naval family from the old naval city of Plymouth, England.  I offer this only as a possible pointer to further investigation.  The Imperial War Museum in London may have an authorative answer.  The 'cat' in question is not a feline but rather the cat-o-nine tails, which was once used aboard Royal Navy ships as punishment.  It was kept in a canvas bag until required and once it was taken out everyone on board knew what was about to happen. In other words the secret was out.

It was used to flay (strip the skin/whip) the wrong-doer and the person using it needed room (their arm's length plus the length of the 'cat' in order to be able to 'swing' it and deliver the blow).

Proverbs in which the cat suffers horribly are commonplace.  "There isn't room in here to swing a cat" for example.  'Swing' means "hang with a noose"...not a nice image.  They seem to be old and I suspect that at some time in the past there was a common idea that doing bad things to cats was a humorous image.  This is still true - remember the best-seller book "101 things to do with a dead cat" which consisted of 101 cartoons showing creative uses for cat corpses? SteveBaker 04:03, 10 April 2007 (UTC)

Remember that in the "dark ages" cats were considered the familiars of witches.  Cats were routinely killed because they were so linked to witchcraft.  So it seems much more plausible that skinning and otherwise killing cats has a derivation not in humor, but in superstition. Fdharbour

more attempts at answering...

The best I found on Google books is in Speaking of Animals: A Dictionary of Animal Metaphors by Robert Allen Palmatier.  Apparently there are two ways skin a cat: from head to tail and from tail to head.  As well as being a disgusting image, it seems a rather inadequate metaphor for the idea expressed.   First attested 1830.  Maybe the sheer gratuitous grotesqueness tickled the collective funnybone of the anglosphere enough to make the expression stick. jnestorius 21:44, 9 April 2007 (UTC)

may i use another idiom just to add to the grotesquery... before anyone thinks of more than one way to skin my cat, he will have to think of doing it over my dead body...  8)

i searched the internet highway for some answers on why this phrase ever came about.  some interesting finds:

A Dictionary of American Proverbs (1996) lists several variations:

There's more than one way to skin a cat without tearing the hide.
More than one way to kill a cat besides choking him with butter.
More than one way to kill a cat besides skinning him.
More than one way to skin a cat.
There are more ways than one to kill a cat.
There are more ways to kill a cat besides choking him to death.
There is more than one way to kill a cat.
There is more than one way to kill a cat besides choking him on
        cream.

the horror!  the horror!

the author means well, and his points for creative thinking are a great help to anyone with the patience to follow them.  but he himself (deservedly ;D) should have done some creative thinking of his own by using a less horrific idiom in the title.

"more than one way to skin a cat?"  how creative is that?  it's not only horrific, it's just as worn out as a metaphor.

i like reaching out to songs in the past, distant or not.  they give an idea of how people felt and reacted to things at certain decades and provide an inkling of our cultural evolution.  well, those concertos were from centuries past, rendering old pop songs and standards more accessible. ;D

"As a lyric writer, Hal was simple, concise and poetic -- conveying volumes of meaning in fewest possible words and always in service to the music," ASCAP's current president, the songwriter Paul Williams, said in a statement. "It is no wonder that so many of his lyrics have become part of our everyday vocabulary and his songs... the backdrop of our lives."

Bacharach and David were among the most successful teams in modern history, with top 40 hits including "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head," "Close to You" and "That's What Friends Are For."  Although most associated with Dionne Warwick, their music was recorded by many of the top acts of their time, from the Beatles and Barbra Streisand to Frank Sinatra and Aretha Franklin. They won an Oscar for "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head" (from the movie "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid"), Grammys and Tonys for the songs from the hit Broadway musical "Promises, Promises."
