The faglong, also known as kuglong, hagalong, kutyapi, is a two-stringed boat-shaped lute.  Its two strings are of metal, with one played as a drone, and the other strummed to produce a melody using the pentatonic scale. The sluday or sloray is a polychordal bamboo tube zither having an anhemitonic tuning, on which melodic patterns are repeated over long periods.  (This is the same instrument known as tangkol to the Bukidnon, takol to the Mansaka, saluray to the Ata, and tangko to the Mangguangan.) The most common wind instrument is the finagtong, a short bamboo flute with five finger holes. Apart from the odol ceremony, the Bilaan have dance dramas and dance rituals which depict their customs and traditions.  An important, and probably the longest dance drama is the series of dances depicting the different stages of rice planting, whcih enacts to music the stages already described, namely: the mabah or plea for the gods to help a farmer choose the field to clear; the abmigo or clearing the field; the amlah or planting of the rice; and the kamto or harvest of the rice.  The admulak is a dance depicting bird hunting with bow and arrow.  The thick rainforests of Bilaan country is haven to many kinds of birds and game.  In this dance drama, three hunters hide under an amlat (bird shelter) built under trees of thick foliage, where birds flock to feed and rest.  To provide tempo, a faglong player describes in song the movements of the dancers.  All performers use a uniform dance step to keep in tune with the faglong, as they mime the movement of hunters.  They look up at the big trees, discussing the source of the calls.  They set thin arrows on their bows, slowly creeping towards a more propitious place, in order to conceal themselves while intently listening to bird sounds.  Spotting birds alight, the group becomes spirited.  A Bilaan standing as at distance imitates birdcalls, as he cups his hands around his mouth.  Alerted and assured of a prey, the dancers crawl to a vantage position, arrows steadied on their bows now oriented towards the source of bird calls.  A hunter shoots an arrow, and downs a bird.  There is excitement as they scuffle for the catch.  The bird is actually a bundle of dried leaves thrown in by a spectator at a given signal.Traditionally, whoever shoots down the first bird must cook and eat it without sharing the catch with his companions.  This is said to ensure a bountiful hunt.  In the dance drama, the two unsuccessful hunters enviously look on as their comrade eats his catch.  Suddenly, the latter gets an upset stomach, flails about, contorts, doubles over, writhes in pain, and throws up.  His confused and frightened companions try to comfort him, then rush back to the village to fetch the alamoos. The amti is a dance drama on fishing, which depicts a river fishing going through his daily routine of setting traps.  His dance weaves around the choice of spots where he can set his bubo traps, where to spread dried banana leaves for his shelter, how to lure fish into his traps, and where to spread the poison sap extracted from the roots of the tubli plant. The movements of the fisher's trap are imitated step by step in the dance sequence: the setting of traps, luring of the fish toward them, poisoning and inspecting the catch.  He builds a fire to wrm himself.  Then he goes to the water and catches an elusive fish between his legs.  He skewers the fish and cooks it over the fire.  Finally, he collects his catch in a side basket, and happily dances away with the bubo over his shoulders and his fish in the basket.

The tangungo is a set of eight metal gongs hung on a harness, in contrast to the Maranao kulintangan which usually has eight gongs of graduated sizes, laid out on a horizontal platform.  The set consists of seven small-sized gongs, which produce a running melody, with the eight and biggest gong playing in syncopation to the rest to produce a particular rhythm.  Another kind of gong played separately is called falimak, which is of medium size and made of cast iron.  The kubing or jew's harp is known by the same name among the Bilaan, Bagobo, Bukidnon, Maguindanao, Mansaka, and Subanon.  As with all other bamboo idiophones of this type, it uses a thin bamboo filament attached to the body.

Several stringed instruments are played by the Bilaan.  The kitara is a four-stringed plucked lute, carved out of a single piece of wood, and not played chordally or with several fingers of the left hand pressing down simultaneously on various parts of the fingering down simultaneously on various parts of the fingerboard, and with the right hand sounding multiple strings at one time, instead, the player always performs in a rapid melodic style, plucking out a distinct melody from the strings.  The kitara is wither played solo, in which case a programmatic title for a specific occasion is given to the piece played, or as an accompaniment for songs of courtship. The diwagay is a one-stringed bowed lute, also called a "spike fiddle," which is known as kagut among the Manobo and kotet among the Subanon.

The Bilaan use musical instruments extensively with their rituals and dances.  The instruments run the full range of idiophones (percussions), zithers (bamboo tubes with strings), chordophones (wooden lutes), and aerophones (flutes and reeds).

The odol percussion intrument is a wooden sonorant plank made from molave.  This is also known to the Manobo and Tagacaolo groups of southern Davao.  It produces drumlike rhythms when it is used to accompany the dance which is part of the odol performance.  In the old days, the odol was an indispensable part of celebrations welcoming home victorious warriors on their return.  It would usually be played by female musicians.  A player, holding two pieces of wood in their hands, squats in front of the wooden plank, pounding out an ostinato of beats with a steady tempo.  Tempo dancers, wearing strings of belts around their colorful costumes, wrists, and ankles, dance around the odol plank in a proud, erect, and dignified manner.  From time to time, they tap the ends of the plank with their wooden wands.

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - The Vatican underlined its opposition to gay adoption on Sunday as same-sex marriage supporters staged a topless protest in front of the pope in St. Peter's Square.

The Vatican paper L'Osservatore Romano published a response to an Italian court's rejection of an appeal by a father who feared his son would not have a balanced upbringing if he lived with his mother and her female partner.

The Court of Cassation ruled it was "mere prejudice" to assume that living with a homosexual couple could be detrimental for a child's development.

While gay rights group Arcigay called it a "historic ruling" for Italy, where it is illegal for gay couples to adopt, Catholic leaders were quick to defend the traditional family unit.

L'Osservatore Romano, the 151-year-old mouthpiece of the Holy See, ran an editorial that sought to play down the court ruling, saying that children often grow up in difficult circumstances without a mother or father.

"But no one believes that these situations should be created just because in some cases they don't cause damage," wrote Adriano Pessina, director of bioethics at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart.

"The human is the masculine and the feminine ... the monogamous family is the ideal place to learn the meaning of human relations and is the environment where the best form of growth is possible," he wrote.

He reaffirmed the Vatican's view that no one has the "right" to children that he said gay couples who want to adopt are claiming.

In Paris, hundreds of thousands of people protested against President Francois Hollande's planned legalisation of same-sex marriage.

The Vatican has become increasingly vocal against homosexual marriage in recent months. Pope Benedict strongly reaffirmed the Church's opposition to it in December, saying heterosexual marriage had an indispensable role in society.

While the pope was giving his weekly address on Sunday, four women from the Ukrainian Femen group who were in the crowd, pulled off their T-shirts to reveal the slogan "In Gay we Trust" painted over their bodies.

Screaming "Homophobes shut up" as the pope started his Angelus blessing, they provoked angry reactions from pilgrims in St. Peter's Square. One woman in the crowd started hitting the activists with an umbrella, calling them "diabolical".

Italian police grabbed the protesters and pulled them away from the crowd.

The index takes into account 10 criteria, including property rights, freedom in trade and financial freedom-of which the Philippines' record showed no change from the previous year. This suggested a need for improvement in terms of market liberalisation.

The country improved in terms of government spending, freedom from corruption, fiscal freedom and investment freedom.

However, the Philippines worsened in terms of business freedom and freedom in trade. This meant that the regulatory environment has become more inefficient.

Hong Kong remained the "freest" economy for the 19th time with 89.3 points. Mainland China placed 136th while Taiwan ranked 20th.

There were only four others in the league of "free" economies or those with scores of 80-100. These were Singapore, Australia, New Zealand and Switzerland.

North Korea retained its bottom rank at 177th with 1.5 points, improving from the previous one point. It was among 32 other "repressed" countries, all scoring less than 50 points.

COPYRIGHT: ASIA NEWS NETWORK
#30029
Such score keeps the Philippines in the category of "mostly unfree" countries or those within the range of 50 points to 59.9 points.

"(The) score is 1.1 points higher than last year, with notable improvements in investment freedom and freedom from corruption outweighing a decline in business freedom," the editors said in a statement.

They added that such score was below the global average of 59.6, but noted that the Philippines' improvement provided contrast to the world's 0.1 point gain.

"The global advance toward economic freedom has ground to a halt," they said. "Since reaching a global peak in 2008, economic freedom has continued to stagnate."

Even then, the editors observed an overall positive trend in 2012, with 91 countries improving their scores compared to 78 that declined.

As for the Philippines, they noted that the government has pursued a series of legislative reforms toward an improved business environment that encourages broader-based job growth.

Still, the editors said Philippine institutions needed "deeper commitment to reform."

"Although the perceived level of corruption has declined in recent years, more effective anti-corruption measures need to be institutionalised," they said.

"The inefficient judiciary remains susceptible to political interference and does not provide strong and transparent enforcement of the law, undermining prospects for long-term economic development," they added.

Manila (Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN) - The government's anti-corruption efforts helped push the Philippines' global ranking in terms of economic freedom by 10 notches to 97th among 177 countries and territories.

This was according to the editors of the 2013 Index of Economic Freedom, jointly released by Washington D.C.-based The Heritage Foundation and The Wall Street Journal.

Based on the latest annual index, the 19th since it first came out in 1995, the Philippines scored 58.2 out of 100 points.

Robin also shared that his family is not against Rustom’s transformation.

“Kanya kanyang prinsipyo tayo sa buhay. Trip niya iyon, masaya siya doon, eh ‘di bahala siya. Kami, masaya kami dito. Pero siyempre kapag may nangyari sa kapatid mo, ikaw ang unang pupunta doon. Wala nang basagan ng trip ngayon. Ang tatanda na natin, may basagan pa ng trip?”

Although they don’t see each other, Robin maintains he and BB are not fighting and he’ll always be there for him.

“Wala namang problema. Ang baduy naman niyan, magkakapatid may problema? Alam mo sa magkakapatid, hindi niyo naman kailangang araw-araw magkita. Ang importante diyan, kapag kailangan ka, nandoon ka. Minsan naman lagi kang nandoon, nakakaistorbo ka pala.”

Robin’s only wish for BB is for his safety.

Brothers Robin Padilla and BB Gandanghari may have not yet spoken to each other. But Robin says he will always love and respect his brother even if he gets a sex change.

“Ang pagmamahal hindi mawawala, laging andiyan ang pagmamahal. Kapatid ko iyan eh,” Robin said in an interview at the press conference of Men’s Health magazine on Thursday, January 11.

Robin still calls his brother Rustom, not BB. The former admits missing Rustom. But he respects him despite the change in his appearance.

“Oo naman. At mas matanda siya sa akin. Usapin lang iyan ng prinsipyo. Ang prinsipyo, puwedeng isantabi iyan kapag ang pinag-uusapan ay pamilya.”

A 65-year-old woman shot herself Saturday in the parking lot of the Far East Dallas gun shop where she had just bought a pistol.

People inside McClelland Gun Shop heard the shot and called police about 2:15 p.m. The woman, Harriet Deison of Dallas, was found inside her Lexus sedan in the 1500 block of Centerville Road, near Garland and Jupiter roads.

The gun Deison is believed to have shot herself with is the same one she had just purchased, Dallas police Sgt. Shelley Johnston said.

Police said they did not find a suicide note at the scene.

Investigators will verify that the shop followed procedures before selling the weapon, Johnston said.

No one answered the phone at the gun shop.

January 13, 2013, 05:47:00 PM
Confucianism placed importance on understanding and properly adhering to the five relationships:

Ruler and subjects

Father and son

Husband and wife

Elder brother and younger brother

Elder friends and junior friends

From the time of Confucius until the 20th century the death of a parent would commonly mean a three-year mourning period for their child. The three-year length symbolizes the first three years in a child's life when they are being carried and loved unconditionally by their parents. These mourning practices would include wearing sackcloth, leaving hair unkempt, eating a restricted diet of congee two times a day, living in a mourning shack placed beside the house, and moaning in pain at certain intervals of the day. It is said that after the death of Confucius his followers engaged in this three-year mourning period to symbolize their commitment to his teachings.

The mourning of a loved one usually involves elaborate practices, and commonly occurs in this sequence: A public notification of grief through wailing, the wearing of white mortuary clothes by the family of the deceased, bathing of the corpse, the transfer of symbolic goods like money and food from the living to the dead, preparation and installation of a spirit tablet, payment of ritual specialists (Taoist priests or Buddhist monks), the playing of music and chanting of scriptures to accompany the corpse and to settle the spirit, the sealing of the corpse in a coffin, the expulsion of the coffin from the community. The intensity of the mourning reflects the kind of relationship one had with the deceased.

Inspiration & Hope / Re: Ancestral veneration
January 13, 2013, 05:44:21 PM
The core belief of ancestor veneration is that there is a continued existence after death. It is thought that the soul of a deceased person is made up of yin and yang components called hun and po. The yin component, po (é,,), is associated with the grave, and the yang component, hun (é,), is associated with ancestral tablets . According to this belief, at death the components split into three different souls; the po goes with the body to the grave, one to judgment, and the hun resides in an ancestral tablet. The hun and po are not immortal and need to be nourished; it is the offerings that feed them. Eventually both the hun and po go to the underworld, although the hun goes to heaven first. Unlike in western usages of the term, underworld has no negative connotation.

The state of ancestor veneration in modern day China is reported to be declining in areas that were more heavily affected by the hostility towards religion under the Communist regime. However, in rural areas of China, as well as Taiwan, ancestor worship and its practices can still be commonly found.

Ancestor veneration in China
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ancestral veneration in Chinese culture (Chinese: 敬祖; pinyin: jìngzÇ") is the practice of living family members who try to provide a deceased family member with continuous happiness and well-being in the afterlife. It is a way of continuing to show respect toward them, and it reinforces the unity of family and lineage. Showing respect to ancestors is an ideology deeply rooted in Chinese society. It is based on the idea of filial piety (孝, xiào) put forth by Confucius. Filial piety is the concept of remaining loyal to parents as their child. It is believed that despite the death of a loved one, the original relationship remains intact, and that the deceased possess more spiritual power than they did during life. In a sense, the ancestors became thought of as deities who had the ability to interact and have an effect on the lives of those still living.

Science and Research / 2,600-Year-Old Human Brain
January 13, 2013, 05:20:27 PM

A perfectly preserved Iron Age brain was found pickled inside its skull.

An amazingly intact human brain was found inside a skull in Northern England. By sheer accident, the brain was naturally preserved â€" like pickled onions â€" in a way that stopped bacteria from breaking down the soft tissue.

The brain is thought to date from the Iron Age. The head was found without its body â€" leading some to believe that the head was removed during a ritual ceremony and buried apart from the body. -- http://listverse.com/

According to the letter, at least three people tried to get to the bottom of the smelly situation with the employee beginning in May, when the employee's supervisor brought up the topic during a performance discussion.

The author of the reprimand letter, a manager, confronted the employee in July, noting several coworkers had complained and asking if "you could make it to the rest room before releasing the awful and unpleasant odor." The employee apparently offered to try not to pass gas and to turn on a fan when it happened, but the letter writer says that solution wasn't satisfactory.

"I explained to you that turning on the fan would cause the smell to spread and worsen the air quality in the module," the letter writer chastises.

WASHINGTON, D.C. â€" A United States government agency did more than wrinkle its nose at an employee’s flatulence problem, issuing an official reprimand after months of malodors. But the agency said Friday that it has since retracted the rebuke.

The reprimand letter, which runs four pages and is dated Dec. 10, charges the employee of the Social Security Administration, which administers pensions, with "conduct unbecoming a federal employee" and "creating a hostile work environment" because of the repeated gas passing.

It says coworkers didn't want to work with the person because of the problem, which the employee seems to have attributed to lactose intolerance. The letter also contains a chart documenting 60 instances of flatulence, nine on one day in September.

The letter was originally posted on The Smoking Gun website with names blacked out.

Social Security Administration spokesman Mark Hinkle said Friday in a two-sentence email that the reprimand was rescinded a week after it was issued "when senior management became aware of the reprimand" and that the agency, which has its headquarters in a suburb outside of Baltimore, could not comment further because of "privacy concerns." He declined to say the employee's gender or where the person worked.

Later, after a conversation with a deputy division director, the employee blamed the problem on lactose intolerance and offered to purchase Gas-X. The deputy division director also asked that the employee investigate a medical explanation.

"He asked that you check with your doctor to see if there are other options to help you address your flatulence and that you could not pass gas indefinitely and continue to disrupt the work place," the letter says.

The employee submitted information about medical conditions but nothing indicating "that you would have uncontrollable flatulence," according to the letter.

"It is my belief that you can control this condition," the letter writer says.

The employee's flatulent episodes were then documented by date and time over a three-month period beginning in September. The letter does not explain how the record was made.

Similarly, Siargao has been named as the eighth best surf spot in the world by CNNGo, the travel website of the Cable News Network.

The global media network based its ranking from the list of the world's 50 best surf spots compiled by Jade Bremmer, an avid surfer who has surfed many surfing locations in the world.

Siargao is also included in the ''Destinations to watch in 2013'' by Condè Nast Traveller, a well known travel magazine based in the United Kingdom. Particularly mentioned is Dedon Island in Siargao, a high-end resort operated and owned by contemporary world-class furniture brand Dedon.

All these recognitions have further encouraged officials of this northeastern-tip province of Mindanao to boost their effort in putting more state-of-the-art infrastructure to be able to meet the needs of tourists, both foreign and domestic.

The U.N. Security Council last month authorized a one-year military peacekeeping mission in the country. ECOWAS members pledged thousands of troops, and the Security Council has urged other nations to contribute forces as well.

Hollande spoke Saturday evening with British Prime Minister David Cameron, who consented for the United Kingdom to “provide logistical military assistance to help transport foreign troops and equipment quickly to Mali” â€" but no “British personnel in a combat role” â€" a Downing Street spokesman said.

France has been in contact with U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta about the situation, as well as its African and European allies, according to Le Drian.

The U.S. military is weighing its options â€" which could include logistical support and intelligence sharing with France â€" said a U.S. defense official, who declined to be named because no decisions have been made.

“This is a serious issue, and … the United States is committed to going after terrorists wherever they may be in order to protect American interests, but also those of our partners and allies around the world,” Pentagon spokesman George Little said this week.

Journalist Katarina Hoije reported from Bamako, while CNN’s Pierre Meilhan and Greg Botelho reported and wrote the story from Atlanta. CNN’s Laura Smith-Spark, Joe Sterling, Karen Smith and Saskya Vandoorne contributed to this report.

‘The terrorists’ breakthrough must be stopped’

Hollande said the influx of troops from his nation and others is to “allow Mali to recover its territorial integrity in accordance with U.N. Security Council resolutions.”

“France, in this operation, is not pursuing any interest … other than safeguarding a friendly country, and (France) does not have any goal other than fighting against terrorism,” the French president said Saturday. “That is why its action is supported by the international community and saluted by all African countries.”

Though its troops are posted in locations around Africa, French leaders earlier said they wouldn’t send combat troops to Mali and that they’d scale back France’s military interventions on the continent.

So its decision to get involved in Mali, an operation Hollande said “will last as long as necessary,” underlies the seriousness of France’s concern about the situation there.

French hostages have been taken in neighboring Niger by al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, and Paris appears intent on containing any further militant expansion in the heart of Africa.

“The terrorists’ breakthrough must be stopped,” said French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius, justifying France’s efforts “to train and reshape the Malian army.” “If not, (all of) Mali falls into their hands, with a threat to the whole of Africa and Europe.”
