Why Is Memory So Mysterious? - - From philosophy to science
By Stefan Anitei, Science Editor- Softpedia

What would we be without our memories? Our brain's capacity of recalling the past is a mystery. Why and what do we remember? Where are the memories stored? Today, the scientists â€" by using modern technologies â€" are starting to find some answers.

Our memories are not cell groups nor information bits susceptible to be compressed, manipulated or traded. In fact, scientists are not even sure if memories store in a certain brain point. There are no memory centers. The memories are not unchangeable, but reconstructions in a continuous evolution.

What the neurologists studying the brain discovered is nothing similar to a computer. The millions of combinations inside the human brain are not countable and could not be reduced to a mathematical formula. The computer's capacities, even if superior to the human brain's in some fields, are nothing more than humble miracles compared to the marvels executed in each moment of our lives by our neurons. In their network, which turns increasingly dense during our existence, thousands of millions of chemical interchanges are continuously produced through compounds called neurotransmiters
(acetylcholine, glutamate, serotonin, dopamine).

The connexions inside a human brain are estimated at about 500 billion. In this breeding ground the identity, habits, knowledge, emotions, memories, new ideas, associations are developed. Artists know it: memory and inventiveness are continuously and mutually fecundating each other. Memory is a dynamic conjunct, an opened and flexible system, in which the perceptions and the thoughts pass through many pathways. And these pathways, thoughts and perceptions vibrate, circulate, palpitate.

Some areas re-heat, other remain sleepy and can reconnect unexpectedly in a moment (the smell of a bun can recall the infancy). The researchers are attracted by these scars, details and crossroads, and make an effort to decode them with the help of the molecular biology or genetic engineering. But what they discover is not a content but an unlimited capacity of transformation and renovation.

Today, everybody acknowledges the strange power of our brain, which in case of accident or trauma, can open new pathways for the information circulation. The cerebral plasticity is what allows the persons that were born blind, when learning Braille, to use the brain areas normally where images are processed. In reality, if the memory cannot be localized in a specific area it’s because it is found disseminated through all the cerebral matter. It appears that strokes do not erase memories; in reality, they act like a crack cutting off communication between two areas. Memories don’t disappear; just the means to make them emerge are gone. Certain lesions can produce memory problems, but just one lesion cannot induce a total amnesia.

Memories are already not considered pre-established data, but operative processes, responsible for the organization of the perceptions. They are more than a huge collection of sensations, images, and words; it would be a mobile network, an evolutionary labyrinth; an aptitude of the brain's conjunct, a creative and individual capacity. The memories live and die with us, and are tightly connected to our personality, vision over the world, our habits, our love and our way of speaking, walking, sleeping and dreaming.

Without memories, we are not persons; the memory is our own being. However, the memory is extremely fragile. Since the emergence of the civilization, people have invented thousands of methods to conserve and develop the memory. The development of storing methods, like writing, printing, cinema and the computer, have produced an exponential increase of the storing capacity of the events. Faced with the competition of the artificial memories, what will happen with the art of memorizing, so priced in other times? Our electronic slaves have turned us lazy and made us decrease our memorizing ability. Learning by heart "by memorizing" has fallen obsolete in schools, the same way in which calculators made the classical and healthy mental calculation not fashionable anymore.

There is no better method of preserving our memory than forging projects for the future, which is a better remedy for the "old age forgetfulness" than having an active life, keeping on learning. The memory comes from the past but it lights up the future. This is the paradox by excellence; capricious, it always does what it wants. It is full of black holes, inaccessible regions. Our conscience uses only a minute part of our records: we remember just 1/100,000 of our childhood. Still, we can experience the emergence of the involuntary memories that make us instantly revive and relive disappeared worlds.

Even if it is a genial illusionist, the memory is hardly to be trusted. Sometimes, it can be influenced and induces us into making mistakes; sometimes, it gives us the tricky sensation of having already lived the present moment. Seldom, the judges encounter reliable witnesses. It is possible that memory is in reality nothing more than a classification center opened 24/7. While sleeping, our brain accomplishes mysterious repairing works, a type of gardening labor, which allows us to extend the framework of our most recent memories, restore the old networks, leave space for the arrival of new experiences.

During the day, the selection process continues in an implacable form. The so-called immediate memory lasts just a fraction of second, and immediately discards all superfluous memories. The long-term memory erases the memories that look useless, like the foreign language that is not practiced. The declarative memory blots out suddenly entire facets of our life. Anyway, there are no exact memories of the past, and this is explained by the fact that an exact memory would not allow us to survive in a world found in a continuous evolution.

Every minute, the conscience extracts from a sea of memories what it needs, without acting like an owner, without making an inventory. 84 % of the psychologists say that all that we have seen, known, perceived, heard exists in us, without us knowing it. It is impossible to prove the contrary. And the doubt never abandons us. How many times will I turn back on having this thought? How many times will I recall from my sleepy thoughts the memory of that poem, that childhood friend, that trip? How many of the sounds, scents and emotions from those secret archives will remain unused forever?

Breakthrough: Lab Grown Vaginas! - Achieved from stem cells
By Stefan Anitei - Softpedia

You won't believe it, but there are women born with no vagina! A genetic condition, called Mayer-von Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome (MRKHS), affecting one in 5000 women, induces the lack of vagina development during embryogenesis.

These patients can have a normal uterus,
ovaries and external secondary sexual development, like breasts, but they cannot have sexual intercourse or give birth. If their ovaries are normal, they can achieve pregnancy through in vitro fertilization, but after that, they need a surrogate mother to bear the pregnancy and give birth.

"Usually the syndrome is diagnosed when they are young and they try to have sexual intercourse for the first time and it hurts," said Dr. Cinzia Marchese, a professor of clinical pathology and biotechnology at the University Sapienza in Rome. These women are many times too ashamed to discuss the issue with their parents when they are young and often "live the rest of their lives with no normal sexual life, even though they are normal women with normal feelings", she said.

Current methods to reconstruct a vagina are based on grafted skin or intestinal tissue, but this surgery is highly invasive, lengthy and painful, requiring a long time to grow a normal vagina mucosal wall.

But now, Marchese has managed to build brand new vaginas in two MRKHS women, using their own cells to get vaginal tissue in the lab for the first time. "She has got married and is living a normal life," said Marchese about a 28 years old patient who now has a healthy vagina. The other patient was a 17-year-old girl.

Marchese's team took cells by biopsy from where vagina should have been, to obtain vaginal mucosal tissue. The mucosal tissue covers the inside of the vagina, the mouth, digestive and breathing tracts. "What we do is to take a little biopsy of 0.5 centimetres from the place the vagina should be," said Marchese.

Using an enzyme, the researchers broke down the tissue and cultivated stem cells (immature type) to grow new, mucosal tissue on their own. "It takes about 15 days to get a thick enough layer to transplant into the patients," said Marchese.

Marchese investigated the use of stem cells to build sheets of skin in vitro to get skin grafts for burn victims at Harvard Medical School. "When I came back to Italy I modified this technique for mucosal vagina tissue. Our success could be good news for women with cancer and other vaginal complaints," she said.

The Ekranoplan, flying just above the water

The Strange Airplane That Flies Undetectable 1 Meter Above Water, Ice and Ground - The weirdest undetectable aircraft
By: Lucian Dorneanu - Softpedia

It's not a hovercraft and it could never be a true plane. Developed during the Cold War by the former Soviet Union, the Ekranoplan is one of the weirdest flying machines designed by man. It was also undetectable by radar even without using the stealth technologies of present time.

This is a really strange aircraft, as it practically
doesn't fly, it operates only on the principle of ground effect for lift. That's why it doesn't require huge wings or lightweight frame and it's able to carry up to 100 tonnes of cargo, among the largest lifting capabilities ever achieved.

Developed by the communist regime as very high-speed military transports, the largest of these planes were over 100 m long (330 ft), weighed 540 tonnes fully loaded and could travel over 400 km/h (250 mi/h).

The really interesting part about it is the fact that it could travel at only a meter or so above the surface of the water or any other plane surface, like ice or even ground, thanks to the ground effect mentioned above.

Ground effect, specifically the Wing in Ground effect is a drastic reduction of the drag an aircraft experiences while flying at an altitude of only twice the length of its the wingspan. In fact, as it drops to half that distance from the surface, the effect dramatically increases, thus contributing to the lifting force.

This increases the general performance of the aircraft, like speed, fuel consumption and effective payload but presents a major risk for unexperienced pilots, especially during night flights or other covert missions.

Another major advantage of this design is the fact that the Caspian Sea Monster - this is how it was referred to by US intelligence agents who saw it - is untraceable by radar, which cannot detect objects at low altitudes.

Around 120 of them were built before the end of the Cold War and were assigned to patrol and carrier missions in the Caspian Sea and the Black Sea, as they could easily transport two medium-sized tanks for each trip or a squadron of soldiers, which could be rapidly deployed and extracted.

open the locks, our truest selves step
out and we can be completely and
honestly who we are; we can be loved
for who we are and not for who we're

best part of the other. No matter what
else goes wrong around us, with that
one person we're safe in our own

A magic potion or charm thought to arouse sexual love, especially toward a specific person, is known as a "philter."

A poem written to celebrate a wedding is called an epithalamium.

A speleologist studies caves.

Anagrams amused the ancient Greeks, Romans and Hebrews, and were popular during the Middle Ages.

"Aromatherapy" is a term coined by French chemist René Maurice Gattefossé in the 1920's to describe the practice of using essential oils taken from plants, flowers, roots, seeds, etc., in healing.

Ballistics is the science that deals with the motion of projectiles.

Cannibalism, eating human flesh, is also called anthropophagy.

DNA stands for Deoxyribonucleicacid.

In 1945 a computer at Harvard malfunctioned and Grace Hopper, who was working on the computer, investigated, found a moth in one of the circuits and removed it. Ever since, when something goes wrong with a computer, it is said to have a bug in it.

In the 19th century, craftsmen who made hats were known to be excitable and irrational, as well as to tremble with palsy and mix up their words. Such behavior gave rise to the familiar expression "mad as a hatter". The disorder, called hatter's shakes, was caused by chronic mercury poisoning from the solution used to treat the felt. Attacking the central nervous system, the toxin led to behavioral symptoms.

In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl to see who their valentines would be. They would wear these names on their sleeves for one week. To wear your heart on your sleeve now means that it is easy for other people to know how you are feeling.

"Kemo Sabe" means "soggy shrub" in Navajo.

"Long in the tooth," meaning "old," was originally used to describe horses. As horses age, their gums recede, giving the impression that their teeth are growing. The longer the teeth look, the older the horse.

No word in the English language rhymes with month, orange, silver, and purple.

Oddly, no term existed for "homosexuality" in ancient Greece - there were only a variety of expressions referring to specific homosexual roles. Experts find this baffling, as the old Greek culture regarded male/male love in the highest regard. According to several linguists, the word "homosexual" was not coined until 1869 by the Hungarian physician Karoly Maria Benkert.

Of all the words in the English language, the word "set" has the most definitions.

"Ough" can be pronounced in eight different ways. The following sentence contains them all: "A rough-coated, dough-faced ploughman strode through the streets of Scarborough, coughing and hiccoughing thoughtfully.

Poor whites in Florida and Georgia are called "crackers." They got the name from their principal staple food, cracked corn. Another theory states that the name comes from the days when they would drive cattle southward using the "crack" of their bullwhips to keep the animals in line and moving.

"Rhythms" is the longest English word without the normal vowels, a, e, i, o, or u.

"Second string," meaning "replacement or backup," comes from the middle ages. An archer always carried a second string in case the one on his bow broke.

The "O" when used as a prefix in Irish surnames means "descendant of."

The "y" in signs reading "ye olde.." is properly pronounced with a "th" sound, not "y". The "th" sound does not exist in Latin, so ancient Roman occupied (present day) England used the rune "thorn" to represent "th" sounds. With the advent of the printing press the character from the Roman alphabet which closest resembled thorn was the lower case "y".

The ancient Romans built such an excellent system of roads that the saying arose "all roads lead to Rome," that is, no matter which road one starts a journey on, he will finally reach Rome if he keeps on traveling. The popular saying came to mean that all ways or methods of doing something end in the same result, no method being better than another.

The correct response to the Irish greeting, "Top of the morning to you," is "and the rest of the day to yourself."

The expletive, "Holy Toledo," refers to Toledo, Spain, which became an outstanding Christian cultural center in 1085.

The idiom "pillar of salt" means to have a stroke, or to become paralyzed and dead.

The last thing to happen is the ultimate. The next-to-last is the penultimate, and the second-to-last is the antepenultimate.

The phrase "raining cats and dogs" originated in 17th Century England. During heavy downpours of rain, many of these poor animals unfortunately drowned and their bodies would be seen floating in the rain torrents that raced through the streets. The situation gave the appearance that it had literally rained "cats and dogs" and led to the current expression.

The phrase "sleep tight" originated when mattresses were set upon ropes woven through the bed frame. To remedy sagging ropes, one would use a bed key to tighten the rope.

The phrase "rule of thumb" is derived from an old English law which stated that you couldn't beat your wife with anything wider than your thumb. Actually, that's a piece of folk etymology. The phrase refers to the use of rough and ready practical experience rather than formal procedures in getting something done. It's most likely that the saying comes from carpenters using the length of the first joint of the thumb, which is about an inch long, to measure things. So "rule" refers to a ruler in the sense of measurement, not of despotism or male chauvinism. Other parts of the body were used as a ruler, too. A foot was determined by a pace, the distance from the tip of the nose to the outstretched fingers is roughly a yard, and horse heights are still measured by handsâ€"the width of the palm and closed thumb is about four inches.

The plastic things on the end of shoelaces are called aglets.

The ridges on the sides of coins are called reeding or milling.

The right side of a boat was called the starboard side due to the fact that the astronavigators used to stand out on the plank (which was on the right side) to get an unobstructed view of the stars. The left side was called the port side because that was the side that you put in on at the port.

The side of a hammer is a cheek.

The study of insects is called entomology.

The study of word origins is called etymology.

The symbol on the "pound" key (#) is called an octothorpe.

The term "devil's advocate" comes from the Roman Catholic Church. When deciding if someone should be sainted, a devil's advocate is always appointed to give an alternative view.

The term "dog days" has nothing to do with dogs. It dates back to Roman times, when it was believed that Sirius, the Dog Star, added its heat to that of the sun from July3 to August 11, creating exceptionally high temperatures. The Romans called the period dies caniculares, or "days of the dog."

The term "honeymoon" is derived from the Babylonians who declared mead, a honey-flavored wine, the official wedding drink, stipulating that the bride's parents be required to keep the groom supplied with the drink for the month following the wedding.

The term "throw one's hat in the ring" comes from boxing, where throwing a hat into the ring once signified a challenge. Today it nearly always signifies political candidacy.

The term "the whole 9 yards" came from W.W.II fighter pilots in the South Pacific. When arming their airplanes on the ground, the .50 caliber machine gun ammo belts measured exactly 27 feet, before being loaded into the fuselage. If the pilots fired all their ammo at a target, it got "the whole 9 yards."

The term, "It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye" is from Ancient Rome. The only rule during wrestling matches was, "No eye gouging." Everything else was allowed, but the only way to be disqualified is to poke someone's eye out.

The two lines that connect your top lip to the bottom of your nose are known as the philtrum.

The white part of your fingernail is called the lunula.

The word "homosexual" was not coined until 1869 by the Hungarian physician Karoly Maria Benkert.

The word "honcho" comes from a Japanese word meaning "squad leader" and first came into usage in the English language during the American occupation of Japan following World War II.

The word "set" has the highest number of separate definitions in the English Language (192 definitions according to the Oxford English Dictionary.)

The word "assassination" was invented by Shakespeare.

The word "coach" is derived from the village of Kocs, Hungary, where coaches were invented and first used.

The word "karate" means "empty hand."

The word "samba" means "to rub navels together."

The word gargoyle comes down from the Old French: gargouille, meaning throat or gullet. This is also the origin of the word gargle. The word describes the sound produced as water passes the throat and mixes with air. In early architecture, gargoyles were decorative creatures on the drains of cathedrals.

The word 'news' did not come about because it was the plural of 'new.' It came from the first letters of the words North, East, West and South. This was because information was being gathered from all different directions.

The word quisling comes from the name of Major Vidkun Quisling, a Norwegian who collaborated with the Germans during their occupation of Norway. The word now means "traitor."

The world's largest alphabet is Cambodian, with 74 letters.

The ZIP in Zip-code stands for "Zoning Improvement Plan."

Theodore Roosevelt was the only U.S. president to deliver an inaugural address without using the word "I". Abraham Lincoln, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Dwight D. Eisenhower tied for second place, using "I" only once in their inaugural addresses.

There are roughly 6,500 spoken languages in the world today. However, about 2,000 of those languages have fewer than 1,000 speakers. The most widely spoken language in the world is Mandarin Chinese. There are 885,000,000 people in China that speak that language.

Facts and Trivia / Pass The Butter ... please...
July 08, 2007, 11:19:23 PM
This is an interesting Urban Legend. . . . .

Margarine was originally manufactured
to fatten turkeys. When it killed
the turkeys, the people who had put
all the money into the research wanted
a payback so they put their heads
together to figure out what to do with
this product to get their money
back. It was a white substance with
no food appeal so they added the
yellow coloring and sold it to people
to use in place of butter. How do you
like it? They have come out with
some clever new flavorings.

DO YOU KNOW.. the difference
between margarine and butter?

Read on to the end...gets very
interesting!

Both have the same amount of
calories.

Butter is slightly higher in
saturated fats at 8 grams
compared to 5 grams.

Eating margarine can increase heart
disease in women by 53% over
eating the same amount of butter,
according to a recent Harvard
Medical Study.

Eating butter increases the
absorption of many other nutrients in
other foods.

Butter has many nutritional benefits
where margarine has a few
only because they are added!

Butter tastes much better than
margarine and it can enhance the
flavors of other foods.

Butter has been around for centuries
where margarine has been around for
less than 100 years.

And now, for Margarine..

Very high in trans fatty acids .

Triple risk of coronary heart
disease .
Increases total cholesterol and LDL
(this is the bad cholesterol) and
lowers HDL cholesterol, (the good
cholesterol)

Increases the risk of cancers up to
five fold.

Lowers quality of breast milk.

Decreases immune response.

Decreases insulin response.

And here's the most disturbing
fact.... HERE IS THE PART THAT IS
VERY INTERESTING!

Margarine is but ONE MOLECULE away
from being PLASTIC..

This fact alone was enough to have me
avoiding margarine for life and
anything else that is hydrogenated
(this means hydrogen is added,
changing the molecular structure of
the substance).

You can try this yourself:

Purchase a tub of margarine and leave
it in your garage or shaded area.
Within a couple of days you will note
a couple of things:

* no flies, not even those pesky
fruit flies will go near it (that
should tell you something)

* it does not rot or smell
differently because it has no
nutritional value ; nothing will grow
on it. Even those teeny weeny
microorganisms will not a find a home
to grow. Why? Because it is nearly
plastic . Would you melt your
Tupperware and spread that on your
toast?

you want to "butter them up")!

Chinese Proverb:
"When someone shares something of
value with you and you benefit from
it, you have a moral obligation to
share it with others.
So..., DO IT !

Facts and Trivia / The Rarest Creature on Earth

The Rarest Creature on Earth - The Lonesome George
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

This is an unusual case: scientists know that a species is extinct even if its last individual has not died yet. But it could still exist for 1-2 centuries more. This is the "Lonesome George", the last known survivor of a species of Pinta tortoise, one of the 13 species of giant tortoises (of which two are already extinct) found in the Galapagos archipelago off Ecuador. Pinta is one of the islands of the archipelago.

Many say the effort to fend off extinction may be useless.
Even if a partner is found, George has not shown interest in reproducing with females in his pen at the Darwin Research Center and may not know how. Even when other males were kept with the females in the pen, George did not get the idea.

"The search is a long shot. George may be physiologically incapable of reproducing." said Linda Cayot, a science adviser for the Galapagos Conservancy and former keeper of George.

"He has problems ... he probably never saw a female and male of his own species reproducing," said Swiss biologist Sveva Grigioni, who worked with George 13 years ago.

The precise age of George is not known; the age of the 5ft-long (1.5 meter) giant, weighing 200lb (90.7 kg) is estimated between 60 to 90. George was officially proclaimed the rarest creature on Earth according to The Guinness Book Of Records.

Still, earlier this year, a team at Yale University in Connecticut found a male tortoise on the island of Isabela (another Galapagos island) that was the hybrid between a Pinta male and an Isabela female. Thus, more Pinta tortoises could be found on Isabela.

George could live till 200 and still reproduce, if he learns how to do it. He was found on Pinta in 1971.

Since the discovery of the Galapagos islands in 1535, the tortoises have been hunted by sailors for meat (live tortoises could be kept for months on the shipboard, providing fresh meat) and the goats introduced in the islands degraded tortoises' environment and competed with them for food.

Today, there are some 20,000 giant tortoises living in the archipelago, belonging to 10 species.

10 Stupid Beliefs about Animals - From appearance to reality
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Some beliefs are due to a lack of scientific knowledge, some come from legends and others are the cause of misspellings from one language to another or even sensory illusions! Here are just 10 of them:

1.Camels do not store water in their humps. This widespread belief comes from the fact that, while crossing the desert, they can resist up to 17 days without water under a scorching heat, while their humps are diminishing. In reality, the humps are just fat deposits that only indicate how well the animal is fed. Instead, camels can drink up to 120 liters of water at once and their ability of resisting the lack of water is due to many physiological adaptations (variable body temperature, little urine, sun radiation reflecting coat, low water percentage in the body) and the ability to store water in the ... red blood cells! So, no stomach pouches or hump... What is true is that by burning fat from the humps not only energy results but water too.

2.Polar bears are not white! Their hairs are transparent and present an empty nucleus which disperses and reflects the sunlight, which makes them appear white, just like in the case of the snow. And they appear white only soon after the seasonal molt as in time sun oxidation and grease stains slur it to yellow.

3.Bats are blind. They just use their echolocation through ultrasounds
to locate their prey and "see" their environment. Recent research has shown that the so-called fruit bats, which lack echolocation, do not only see, but their sight is comparable to that of many diurnal mammals, possessing the same ability of detecting colors.

4.Lemmings do not commit suicide! Each 4 years there is a cyclic demographical boom of the lemmings (small arctic rodents) followed by a desperate massive migration during which many die throwing themselves into the rivers, lakes and sea. It has been regarded as a collective suicide, conscious or involuntary, caused by over-population. In reality, being solitary rodents by nature, when the population booms, the stronger lemmings drive the weaker and younger ones off long before the food is depleted. The young lemmings disperse in random directions looking for vacant territory. Geographical features constrain their movements and channel them into a relatively narrow corridor and large numbers can build up leading to social friction, distress and eventually a mass panic can follow and they flee in all directions, but they do not deliberately march into the sea; this is just pure fantasy.

5.You have heard there are two rhino species in Africa: black and white. In reality, there is not any black or white rhino: both species have gray skins. This confusion comes from Afrikaans language: the Boers call the white rhino "widje", meaning "wide" from the animal's wide lips, adapted for grazing. In English, the confusion with "white" occured and in opposition, the other species was named "black". In fact, some blacks can be paler than some white rhinos. The black rhino has a pointed snout, adapted for browsing.

6.Dolphins are peaceful creatures that eat only small fish. But the ocean's largest predator, the killer whale or orca, is just an over-sized dolphin, the biggest of all: 10 (30 ft) long and 8 tonnes. Even if orcas attack even real whales, they are as playful and curious as the other dolphins.

7.Big crocodiles species, like Nile or Saltwater crocodiles have one of the most impressive jaws in the animal kingdom, which can apply several tonnes of pressure in just one bite. But they bear a surprise: the opening muscles are extremely weak. So weak that if a man holds the closed jaws of a crocodile, even a huge one, the animal won't be able to open them.

8.Ever since Bambi, a deer has been the symbol of innocence. But in the Scottish island of Rum, the deer are the executioners. In August and September, the red deer are the main predators of the chocks of petrels. They eat the heads and the legs to achieve mineral supplements necessary for the growth of their antlers, as the island's vegetation is poor.

9.Snakes do not hypnotize their prey. In fact, most of them have poor eyesight. The myth comes from the fact that their eyelids are joined and transparent. They do not blink and look like holding the eyes always open, in a hypnotic stare. Other false belief is that they do not sleep: they do it, but with their eyes open.

10. The mysterious Tasmanian tiger, which still turns on the imagination of many, was not a tiger at all (in Australia there are not any native cats, even if currently feral cats brought by Europeans are devastating its native fauna), but the world's largest marsupial carnivore. It looked like a large dog (hence its other name, the Marsupial Wolf) with stripes across its back (hence the name "tiger"), a stiff tail with a wide base (like in kangaroos or any other marsupial) and a large head.

An Italian man enters his favorite
ritzy restaurant and while sitting at
his regular table, he noticed a
gorgeous woman sitting at a table
nearby.... all alone.

He calls the waiter over and asks for
their most expensive bottle of Merlot
to be sent over to her, - knowing that
if she accepts it, she is his.

The waiter gets the bottle and quickly
sends it over to the girl, saying this
from the gentleman. She looks at the
wine and decides to send a note over
to the man.

The note read: "For me to accept this
bottle, you need to have a Mercedes in
your garage, a million dollars in the
bank, and 7 inches in your pants.

The man, after reading the note, sends
one of his own back to her and it read:

"Just so you know - I happen to have a
Ferrari Testarosa, a BMW 850iL, and a
Mercedes 560SEL in my garage; plus I
have over twenty million dollars in
the bank." - "But, not even for a

inches. Just send the bottle back!!!

Jokes and Humor / 3 whishes
July 06, 2007, 01:23:14 PM
A Woman was out golfing one day when she hit the ball into the woods. She went into the woods to look for it and found a frog in a trap. The frog said to her, "If you release me from this trap, I will grant you three wishes."
The woman freed the frog, and the frog said, "Thank you, but I failed to mention that there was a condition to your wishes. Whatever you wish for, your husband will get times ten!" The woman said, "That's okay."

For her first wish, she wanted to be the most beautiful woman in the
world. The frog warned her, "You do realize that this wish will also make your husband the most handsome man in the world, an Adonis whom women will flock to".
The woman replied, "That's okay, because I will be the most beautiful Woman and he will have eyes only for me."
So, KAZAM!!---she's the most beautiful Woman in the world!

For her second wish, she wanted to be the richest woman in the world. The frog said, "That will make your husband the richest man in the world. And he will be ten times richer than you."
The woman said, "That's okay, because what's mine is his and what's his is mine." So, KAZAM!! - -she's the richest woman in the world!

The frog then inquired about her third wish, and she answered, "I'd
    like a mild heart attack..."

Moral of the story: Women are clever. Don't mess with them, OK!

Attention female readers: This is the end of the joke for you. Stop
    here and continue feeling good!!!

    Male readers: Please scroll down.

The man had an heart attack ten times milder than his wife .

Moral of the story: Women are really dumb but think they're really
smart. Let them continue to think that way and just enjoy the show.

PS: If you are a woman and are still reading this; it only goes to show that women never listen!!! hhahahahaha:))

"Salamat po."

Isang bagong-saltang kaluluwa ang umakyat sa langit

ang ngayon ay nakaharap kay San Pedro. Namasyal silang

dalawa sa langit. Magkahawak-kamay silang

babahaginan nito!

"Salamat po."

Don't give up.....

.......

One day I decided to quit...
I quit my job, my relationship, my
spirituality... I wanted to quit my life.

I went to the woods to have one last
talk with God.

"God", I asked, "Can you give me one
good reason not to quit?"
His answer surprised me...
"Look around", He said. "Do you see the
fern and the bamboo?"
"Yes", I replied.

"When I planted the fern and the bamboo
seeds, I took very good care of them.

I gave them light.

I gave them water.

The fern quickly grew from the earth.
Its brilliant green covered the floor.
Yet nothing came from the bamboo seed.
But I did not quit on the bamboo.
In the second year the Fern grew more
vibrant and plentiful.

And again, nothing came from the bamboo
seed. But I did not quit on the bamboo.

He said.
"In year three there was still nothing
from the bamboo seed.
But I would not quit.

In year four, again, there was nothing
from the bamboo seed. I would
not quit." He said.

"Then in the fifth year a tiny sprout
emerged from the earth. Compared
to the fern it was seemingly small and
insignificant...But just 6
months later the bamboo rose to over 100
feet tall.

It had spent the five years growing
roots. Those roots made it strong and
gave it what it needed to survive.
I would not give any of my creations a
challenge it could not handle."

He asked me. "Did you know, my child,
that all this time you have been
struggling, you have actually been
growing roots".

"I would not quit on the bamboo.
I will never quit on you."
"Don't compare yourself to others."
He said.
"The bamboo had a different purpose than
the fern.
Yet they both make the forest beautiful."

"Your time will come", God said to me.

"You will rise high"

"How high should I rise?"
I asked.

"How high will the bamboo rise?" He
asked in return.

"As high as it can?" I questioned.

"Yes." He said, "Give me glory by rising
as high as you can."

I left the forest and brought back this
story.

I hope these words can help you see that
God will never give up on you.
Never, Never, Never Give up.
For the Christian Prayer is not an
option but an opportunity.

Don't tell the Lord how big the problem is,
tell the problem how GREAT the LORD is!

What's the Truth Serum? - Trying to extort information
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

The truth serum is a drug that would be injected into the muscles to extract information from persons resistant to deliver it, most often by a police, intelligence, or military organization and the concept turned popular due to espionage novels and movies.

Real truth drugs are mostly fictional, even if some
chemicals have been shown to be effective in lowering the resistance of an interrogated person.

The term appeared at the beginning of the '20s, when the anaesthesiologist T.S. House baptized with commercial goals his discovery, the alkaloid scopolamine, extracted from plants belonging to the nightshade family, like henbane (Hyoscyamus), jimson weed (Datura species) and Scopolia (from this genus comes the name of the chemical). Even today, scolopamine is used as a sedative and mydriatic and to alleviate the symptoms of motion sickness.

House claimed that the drug could induce a person to tell the truth and during a trial for crime in Alabama (US), various persons confessed to be guilty under its effects. The news, picked up by the sensationalist media, contributed to the creation of the legend of the truth serum.

The employment of scopolamine as a truth drug was investigated by various secret services, including the CIA, during the 1950s, in the Project MKULTRA. But due to the hallucinogenic side effects of the alkaloid, the truth was prone to distortion and the project was after that abandoned. The infamous Nazi doctor Josef Mengele experimented on scopolamine as an interrogation drug.

After that, other narcotic serums emerged, like the amytal and sodium pentothal. Still, these drugs were never proved to have conclusive effects on somebody's will. It is true that high doses can diminish certain brain functions, particularly with judgment and higher cognitive functions, like counting or reasoning and remove inhibitions, but that's all.

Alcohol too is employed for this purpose by many individuals in a more innocent sense, but also by professionals, like KGB officers.

Why Do Married Men Cheat More Than the Others? - High testosterone levels linked to fair play behavior
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Being fair play or not seems to be a question of sex hormones in men. A new research found that men with high testosterone levels are more likely to reject low offers, even if, this way, they’re losing money. It appears that our deepest ancestral behaviors can make us choose irrational economic decisions.

In the experimental game, an anonymous individual can give either a large or small chunk of cash to another person, without any negotiation. The receiver knows the total sum held by the other player, and thus the share is proposed. If there is a deal, both players keep their money of the total and if there is not, neither gains anything. Often, the person offered
denied the free money if the share was too small.

This puzzled the economists as the money came with nothing in exchange. A common theory is that the payout punishes this way the other player for cheating. But Terry Burnham at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, US, guessed this was more connected to biology than ethics.

He put 26 male graduate school students to play the low ultimatum game. Each one started out with $40 and could anonymously offer either $5 or $25 of this initial $40 to another player. But Burnham also assessed testosterone levels in saliva samples from all the subjects.

The highest testosterone level was 497 picomoles per litre of saliva, the lowest 153. When Burnham correlated hormone levels with the results of the money game, a correlation emerged between high testosterone levels and an increased likelihood of rejecting the low offer. Those rejecting small sums presented an average testosterone count of 380 picomoles per litre of saliva, while those accepting it, of 150. "This suggests that people with more testosterone are less tolerant of what they see as inequitable deals â€" possibly due to the hormone's influence on the brain: You have to be very careful about being fair with them. Testosterone produces a greater aversion to unfair deals because the hormone is linked to dominance-seeking behaviors," said Burnham.

Thus, high-testosterone men do not accept low offers because they put them in a lower social position, a clear social disadvantage, especially in primitive societies. "The new findings suggest that biological traits that evolved to give individuals an advantage â€" rather than behaviors that evolved to give a general group advantage â€" explain the irrational refusal of free money in the low ultimatum game," said Burnham. "The high-testosterone subjects were slightly more likely to make the more reasonable offer of $25 when placed in the position of making the proposal. This is in line with the idea from primate studies that found high testosterone males sometimes play a "magnanimous and peacekeeping" role", said Burnham.

As married men tends to possess less testosterone levels, watch out: they are not in the fair play mood.

I agree, Riva baybee. Gwapa ug gwapo jud mo but it's not the beauty factor that makes a relationship work or not. Just like you Riva and your X,Y, and Z, I couldn't stand a long distance relationship. Permi ko ma mistaken as dalaga! Mag queue jud ang mamisita. Hahahaha! And the same thing with the hubby, ma mistaken as ulitaw and daghan chicks modikit. Temptations are everywhere that's why we're inseparable and have planted locator chips in each other's body. Gawd! But then again, we couldn't generalize things. I still adhere to my belief that relationships are not rooted on physical beauty alone. Womanizing (and 'manizing') is an incurable disease whether the couple is near or far from each other. Bow! ;D
