The Roses of Peace Prayer

The term rosary initially referred to a circular enclosed garden, and later to a garland of roses. Since Mary is invoked as Mystical Rose in traditional litanies, Catholics find it easy to associate this beautiful, sweet-smelling and wonderfully enfolded flower with the woman we call Mother. When Mary appeared as Our Lady of Guadalupe to Juan Diego, she filled his tilma with roses in December. So the association seems to be as appealing to Mary as it is to those who honor her.

As we hold in our hands the strung roses of wood, glass, marble or plastic, the scent of peace arises. Like children caressing a smooth shell or a brilliant marble, we feel the quiet stirring of contentment. John Paul II reminds us, “The rosary is by its nature a prayer for peace, since it consists in the contemplation of Christ, the Prince of Peace, the one who is ‘our peace’ (Ephesians 2:4; RVM, #40).

The pope corrects those who would label the rosary an escape from the world’s harsh realities. Instead, by focusing our awareness on Christ, the rosary opens our eyes to the necessity of being peacemakers and justice-doers according to his example.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) has placed seven provinces in Mindanao under storm warning signal number 3 as typhoon "Pablo" moves to make a landfall.

In its 11 a.m. weather bulletin, PAGASA said storm warning signal number 3 has been hoisted in Surigao del Sur, Surigao del Norte, Siargao Island, Dinagat Islands, Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur and Davao Oriental.

Areas under signal number 3 should expect winds of 101-185 kilometers per hour in at least 18 hours.

The following areas, meanwhile, have been placed under signal numbers 1 and 2:

Signal no. 2 (61-100 kph winds expected in at least 24 hrs)

PAGASA said as of 10 a.m., the eye of the typhoon was located 550 kms southeast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur.

It was still packing maximum sustained winds of 175 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 210 kph.

It also maintained its speed and direction, moving west northwest at 24 kph.

Pablo is expected to be at 30 kms east of Hinatuan on Tuesday. Pre-emptive evacuation is now being carried out in areas where the typhoon is expected to unleash its force.

Estimated rainfall is from 15 to 30 mm per hour (heavy - intense) within the typhoon's 600-km diameter.

Residents living in low lying and mountainous areas under public storm warning signals are alerted against possible flashfloods and landslides.

Likewise, those living in coastal areas under public storm warning signal nos. 3 and 2 are alerted against big waves. Fishing boats and other small sea crafts are advised not to venture out into the eastern seaboards of Visayas and Mindanao.

Introduction


The Universal Church is now beginning a new liturgical season which is called Advent. Advent means coming. Christians applied this to the coming of their God into the world, who had manifested himself in Jesus Christ; specifically, "advent" is a period of time set aside to prepare for this coming.

The readings of Advent invite us to be vigilant, to keep our eyes wide open in order to discover and prepare the ways that Jesus has chosen to come and free us from the evil with which we seek happiness, but that instead provokes only a lot of sorrow.

The Gospel tells us it is not the stars and other creations that will cause chaos, but the world of human beings. It is sin that will bring about the chaos. The Words of Jesus sounded like threats; instead, it is a proclamation of joy. Those oppressed and in pain must allow themselves to hope again; their sorrow is about to be taken away. With the coming of Christ "he introduced a new centre which is himself, the mystery of his Person and his death and Resurrection", as Pope Benedict XVI said in his Angelus on 18 November.

Many times in the Gospel, Jesus told us about the need to pray; and in today's Gospel, we are exhorted to be vigilant at all times and pray. True prayer brings us closer to God and what leads to God cannot separate us from others. We do not look up at the clouds, but down at our brothers and sisters. Nor are we worried about what will happen at the end of time, but by the grief of those living beside us. By telling us to be vigilant Jesus asks us to see the needs of our brothers and sisters.
