I've read and seen greener grass on the other side of the fence within Tubag's border.  This is not about the color green, this is about what's the message inside the bottle that is mistaken for color green.  Sorry Mike.

Filipino dishes are tangy but tasty
Howard Seftel
The Arizona Republic
Mar. 3, 2007 12:00 AM

With their exotic Malay, Chinese and Spanish melting-pot roots, Filipino dishes can seem dauntingly inaccessible, even to ethnic-food adventurers.

Eggroll Lumpia Factory doesn't make many allowances for non-Filipinos. It's a low-charm joint with seven small tables.

Behind the counter sit eight steaming chafing trays (the lineup changes daily), the contents of which get spooned into three sizes of plastic foam cups ($3.95, $4.95 and $6.95). This is hard-core ethnic fare. But different can be fun and tasty, and with the $3.95 containers experimentation won't bust any budgets.
Proprietor Gene Avendanio steered me to sinigang. There's a lot going on here: tender chunks of pork (and an occasional fatty one) are stewed with turnips, green beans and tomato in a terrific tangy sauce.

That tanginess - sour, and a bit sharp - is a Filipino hallmark. You'll taste it again in a lip-smackingly tart shrimp soup, stocked with squash and noodles.

I adored giniling, which reminds me of a Cuban dish called picadillo: ground beef tossed with peas, carrots, potatoes, green peppers, raisins and quail eggs. Pork mechado showcases pork riblets in a wondrously flavorful tomato sauce with real spicy bite.

Ginataang langka is certainly different, but it grew on me. The featured ingredient is unripe jackfruit - imagine a starchy artichoke - teamed with a bit of pork and smothered in coconut sauce.

With other dishes, well, perhaps you have to be Filipino.

Embotido are deep-fried pork disks, whose depths you'll plumb after one bite. The fish cake is an acquired taste I haven't acquired. Upo, a Filipino winter melon cooked with ground beef, is surprisingly bland.

A Filipino family of five needed about P6,211 a month last year to cover their food and other basic needs, the government said on Friday.

In a statement, the National Statistical Coordination Board said that for a family of five to survive, they would have had to earn P204 daily, higher than the P193 daily income or P5,853 monthly income they needed in 2005.

The NSCB said this is partly because the Value Added Tax was raised to 12 percent from 10 percent in February of 2006.

Also, inflation last year was recorded at at 6.2 percent, while prices of food items rose by 5.5
percent last year.

The NSCB said that last year, families in the country's capital needed to earn more than average in order to survive. A family of five residing in the National Capital Region needed P8,254 monthly to sustain their families' minimum basic food and non-food needs.

"Of the P8,254 monthly income, P4,920 (60 percent of the poverty threshold) should have been allocated for basic non-food needs and P3,334 (40 percent of the poverty threshold) to basic non-food needs of the family," the NSCB said.

In 2006 the annual inflation rate in the NCR was at 7 percent. - Cheryl Arcibal, GMANews.TV

Filipinos (snack food)
This entry is about the snack food named Filipinos. For the ethnic group from the Republic of the Philippines, see Filipino people.
Artiach Filipinos dark chocolate biscuits as sold in Spain.Filipinos is the brand name for a series of biscuit snacks made by United Biscuits. In Spain and Portugal they are produced by United Biscuits Iberia and sold under the Artiach brand name. In the Netherlands they are sold and produced locally under the Verkade brand. [1]

The standard Filipinos snack is ring shaped and come in several varieties coated in either milk chocolate, dark chocolate, or white chocolate. Milk or dark chocolate versions feature a light colored biscuit. White chocolate versions feature a dark brown biscuit. These can be purchased in large rolls. The dark and white chocolate versions are also available in the Filipinos GoPack or Mini Filipinos, a smaller loose packet of four biscuits.

Filipinos Agujeros (holes) are crisp doughnut hole sized balls coated in either dark or white chocolate.

Filipinos Bigsticks are crispy 20 cm (8 in) stick shaped snacks covered with puffed rice. These are coated in either dark or white chocolate.

Controversy

Protest
The government of the Philippines filed a diplomatic protest with the government of Spain, the European Commission, and then manufacturer Nabisco Iberia in 1999. The protest took offense with the use of the name "Filipinos", a term which can refer to people of the Philippines, to market cookie and pretzel snacks and demanded Nabisco stop selling the product until the brand name was changed.[2]

The resolution's author, Philippine Congressman Heherson Alvarez, claimed that the name of the cookie was offensive due to the apparent reference to their color, "dark outside and white inside". His resolution stated "These food items could be appropriately called by any other label, but the manufacturers have chosen our racial identity, and they are now making money out of these food items." [2] On August 26, 1999 former Philippine president Joseph Estrada called the brand "an insult".[2]

The protest was filed despite Foreign Secretary Domingo Siazon's initial reluctance on the matter. Siazon had reportedly said "he saw nothing wrong with the use of 'Filipinos' as a brand name, noting Austrians do not complain that small sausages are called 'Vienna sausages.'" [2]

National Historical Institute
The Philippine National Historical Institute has stated "The cookies were inspired by 'rosquillo' biscuits produced in Iloilo and Negros and the Spaniards added another twist by coating it with brown or white chocolate." [3][4]
