During a White House press briefing on Thursday, president Donald Trump floated the idea of injecting disinfectant or using ultraviolet or "very powerful" light inside the body as a coronavirus remedy.

The best ways to protect yourself from COVID-19 remain:

Washing your hands frequently
Social distancing
Avoiding touching your mouth, eyes, nose
Practice good respiratory hygiene

There are no FDA approved treatments or vaccines for dealing with a COVID-19 infection. Instead, doctors manage symptoms of the disease as best they can. There are dozens of potential treatment options being explored across the globe, but none have passed safety and efficacy trials in humans.

Many disinfectants, like household bleach, can create extensive organ damage in the gastrointestinal tract and throat if they are ingested in high amounts. Musgrave notes this is "incredibly painful and not pleasant." Exposure to vapors can cause lung injury. Injection of disinfectants can be particularly damaging -- as shown in a case study published in the journal Toxicology Observation in 2013 -- where a patient's blood cells were ripped apart by household bleach and a renal transplant was required.

The White House briefing Thursday also included the notion "sunlight impedes virus transmission" and Trump appeared to tout ultraviolet or "very powerful light" as a potential treatment option if it was brought "inside the body". The World Health Organization's current advice on UV light lamps is they "should not be used to sterilize hands or other areas of the skin." Ultraviolet light -- like that emitted by the sun and other sources -- is known to be damaging to the skin and is the cause for practically all skin cancers.

Both UV and disinfectants should only be used for cleaning surfaces.

"If you want to disinfect surfaces, ultraviolet is very good at disinfecting surfaces," says Musgrave, "and it's great to rub down the your benches and tabletops with 70% alcohol" before reiterating they are not meant to be ingested.

The president's claims came after a short presentation by Bryan which showed a slide discussing how commonly used disinfectants such as bleach and isopropyl alcohol can work to kill the virus. These disinfectants are only useful in killing the coronavirus on surfaces, outside the human body, like kitchen counter tops and tables. They are toxic. They should never be ingested or injected.

"They're not meant for internal consumption," says Ian Musgrave, a pharmacologist and senior lecturer at the University of Adelaide. "Things like disinfectant and bleach are very good at killing viruses and bacteria but they're also very good at killing our own cells."

Musgrave points out the purpose of a drug is to "specifically" target viruses and bacteria without doing damage to the human body. Disinfectants and UV lights are not drugs. "These things can't tell the difference between viruses and your own cells," he says.

You cannot disinfect your body from the inside.

Trump suggests injecting disinfectant to kill coronavirus. Here's why he's wrong
Disinfectants, like bleach and isopropyl alcohol, are toxic and should not be consumed, ingested or injected to fight COVID-19.

During a White House press briefing on Thursday, president Donald Trump floated the idea of injecting disinfectant or using ultraviolet or "very powerful" light inside the body as a coronavirus remedy. Disinfectants are toxic chemicals that are poisonous to the human body and should not be injected. Similarly, ultraviolet light contains energy powerful enough to damage DNA.

"I see the disinfectant that knocks it out in a minute," said Trump, turning to Deborah Birx, the coronavirus response coordinator in the White House task force and Bill Bryan, head of the science and technology directorate at the Department of Homeland Security. "Is there a way we can do something like that by injection inside or almost a cleaning?" he asked.

Both claims were immediately criticized by doctors and physicians.

Protesters have come out in multiple states against governors' orders that largely adhere to federal guidelines, and President Donald Trump has encouraged them to "LIBERATE" their states in tweets.

When asked about the protests and their subsequent, Redfield said that "it's not helpful."

While Trump unveiled guidance last week to help states loosen their social distancing restrictions, Redfield called for state officials to spend the next few months preparing for the next phase by continuing to tout social distancing and scaling up testing and contact tracing.

Looking ahead, Redfield cited the need for a preventative campaign to emphasize the importance of flu shots to reduce flu hospitalizations. He said that getting a flu vaccine "may allow there to be a hospital bed available for your mother or grandmother that may get coronavirus."

WASHINGTON (CNN) — A second coronavirus outbreak could emerge this winter in conjunction with the flu season to make for an even more dire health crisis, the director of the Centers for Disease Control told The Washington Post in an interview.

"There's a possibility that the assault of the virus on our nation next winter will actually be even more difficult than the one we just went through," CDC Director Robert Redfield said in a story published Tuesday. "And when I've said this to others, they kind of put their head back, they don't understand what I mean."

"We're going to have the flu epidemic and the coronavirus epidemic at the same time," he added, predicting a dual assault on the health care system. The current flu season, which began September 29, is projected to be one of the worst in a decade, according to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

His comments come as several governors look to partially reopen their states' economies by loosening some restrictions aimed at limiting the spread of the virus — despite concerns of subsequent increases in coronavirus cases.

Trump made his outlandish billions claim at his press briefing Saturday. Based on some models, the COVID-19 death toll in the U.S. was predicted to reach 100,000 to 220,000, he noted. "I really believe it could have been billions of people [who died] had we not done what we did," he added. "We made a lot of good decisions," he claimed.

There are 8 billion people in the entire world, so it's possible Trump was taking credit for saving an extraordinary number of lives around the world for some unknown reason. The U.S. has nearly a third of the 2.3 million COVID-19 cases around the globe — the highest in the world —  but only 4.2% of the Earth's population. The U.S. also has the highest number of deaths — 36,000 — of any country. So whatever measures the nation is taking don't appear to be particularly successful.

Trump, however, declared Saturday that the U.S. has "produced dramatically better health outcomes than any other country with the possible exception of Germany."

It's uncertain what an accurate COVID-19 death toll prediction will prove to be, or how many will ultimately die. But several experts have said that Trump's months of inaction with a lack of testing, disease contact isolation and early social distancing measures likely cost countless lives in America.

Trump Boasts He Likely Saved 'Billions' Of Lives In A Nation With 330 Million People

President Donald Trump busted his boastful exaggeration record Saturday when he claimed he likely saved "billions" of lives with his measures against COVID-19. The entire population of the U.S. is just 330 million.

Trump claimed Monday he saved "tens of thousands" or possibly "hundreds of thousands" of lives because in late January he restricted foreign nationals from entering the country if they had been in China the previous two weeks. The restrictions did not apply to Americans, however, allowing a conduit for the disease to enter the U.S.
