No im not! but i used to be a Laker fan when i was in LA, i even go to staples and pay 80 dollars just to watch them all the time, but you know what? it was fun and they all got the money.

Mao when you get older you came to realized nga they are getting so richer and very richer...so why magsakit akong dughan? i didnt pay a bit for my seat at the Staples.

Na-demoralized na ang Boston, Bid. Let's see what they can do in Game 7. I think Boston could not endure the feisty Lakers crowd on Friday morning.

Back to square 1 @ 3-3. :)

End of 3Q.  Lakers' up by 25 pts   (51 - 76).  Yahoo !!!
#310

Yahoo !!!.  3Q labaw ang Lakers  by 22 pts -  51 - 73.
#311

The post game stats showed the Lakers' last game was all about Kobe.  Nobody from his team mates stepped-up to compensate what Kobe has been doing. :'(

Celtics made the opposite.  It's not just Allen and Garnett and Rondo but anybody including those from the bench (Robinson and Wallace) contributed to their victory in the last 2 games.

Anyhow,  Go Lakers Go !!!   ;)   :)  :)   :)

Halo Doc Bran,

Can I take aspirin daily even if I'm not suffering or experiencing signs of heart problems?  Are there any side effects?

Thanks,

Bedo

Quote from: Lorenzo on June 13, 2010, 07:03:38 AM
Hello Lionhearth,

Thank you for your question. In case of heart attack (Myocardial Infarction), it is best that one takes immediate coronary medication. Your doctor will probably prescribe you what is called Heparin , this is used for immediate / acute conditions after heart attack. Afterwards, you will be weened off heparin for warfarin (which is used for longterm treatment) After you suffer a heart attack, you will be placed under aspirin regimen for chronicity (long term) treatment as well as blood thinners, and platelet blockers.

Some medication that i would ask your doctor to prescribe you if you are already a patient with CVD (cardiovascular disease) :

1. Asprin
2. Heparin (to be taken if woman is pregnant)
3. Warfarin (not to be taken if woman is pregnant)--this is for chronic treatment.

In the event that a person is having a Myocardial Infarction, the patient will know that they have it by the following symptoms:
1. Retrosternal chest pain
2. Pain that radiates to back, left arm, and jaw of face
3. Pain does not go away and subsists for 2+ hour duration

If the pain does not go away after taking nitroglycerin, nitroprusside or any other venodilators (taken for angina), then this is a case of myocardial infarction.

__

When you know that you are having a heart attack, you will want to call for 911 or immediately have yourself taken to the hospital. The physicians there will give you O2 therapy, at the same time they will give you an IV dose of thrombus-busters. They will give you Streptokinas, Urokinase or Altepase, which will literally break down the thrombin formation that is causing the atherosclerotic plaque forming in the arterial system, thus causing the infarction of the myocardium (heart apparatus).

It is important that the patient who is suffering the syptoms of infarction (cerebrovascular= stroke) or (myocardial = heart) be given these drugs in order to restore proper function of the heart and the brain. If the heart is deprived of proper blood , nercrosis will set in and the heart tissue will be replaced with fibrosis and thus lead to a decreased functioning of the heart. This will eventually cause Cardiomyopathy or cardiohypertrophy; this is the enlarged growth of the heart in order to compensate for the dead tissue in the surrounding heart apparatus. If this is uncorrected, will eventually lead to CHF (Congestive heart failure; chronic heart failure).

To answer your question; you might want to have with you asirin ; and carry it with you on daily basis so as to maintain your blood levels and prevent further accumulation of atherosclerotic plaque from forming into a total plug, which if it does, will cause a occlusion of the main arteries to the heart (coronary artery, right descending, interventricular, posterior coronary etc).

And remember to ask your doctor about heparin, warfarin, leuvovorin, streptokinase, urokinase, altepase, and asprin.

~~

For patients with heart problems or history of heart problems: remember this motto:

AN ASPIRIN A DAY KEEPS THE HEART ATTACK/ STROKE AWAY.

Yours,
Lorenzo

Yes, I agree with you bai HB.  Kulang ng sa list box for all the countries.  Wala pa na mahuman sa developer siguro.
However, if you are familiar with the map of the particular country in question,  just click on the map/zone and the time will be displayed for the country belonging to the zone.

This is good if you wish to browse and make comparisons. There are other similar sites by the way. But if you have a particular place in mind and you want to find out the time there, in real time, I guess you may just type the place name and the word "time" in Google or Yahoo or whatever, and you got it.

By the way, timeticker.com has missed out on some countries.

Patting other's back ?

Quote from: ABJayoma on May 30, 2010, 06:50:36 PM
OMG..!!

This is unbelievable..!!

If you look at the summary of posts that "Guindulman" has in this blog forum as of today, May 29, 2010 among the 40 plus towns of Bohol, there are about more than 1,200 posts, few hundreds less than Valencia.

Of course with bigger population and land areas of Ubay and Tagbilaran, they have the highest number of posts. And that is expected.

But for Guindulman, this is a big surprise, though it has slight bigger population and land area compared to Jagna.

What does this mean?

1.) GUINDULMAN IS ALWAYS HOT.
It has lots of hot stuff that people would love to talk about. When interesting and intelligent Guindulmanons talk, other Boholanos all over listen. Hmm, that is quite interesting.

2.) It is either that there is a jealousy component that other non-Guindulmanons have regarding our people and would love to bring them and Guindulman town down or they are riding its popularity in order to learn how our town blossomed to be what it is right now.

3.) There might have Guindulmanons that have the money or perhaps millionaires that they cannot beat money-wise and they can't get over that. They tend to discredit them because that is the only way they can beat them, at least they tried. Not going to happen. Guess what, Gunidulmanons know how they do their businesses here and abroad and they are not going to tell you. Duh..!!

4.) Guindulmanons are expressive and open to all sorts of good ideas and they work as a team toward a common goal. That is really a good thing, hmmm.

5.) Guindulmanons are educated and smart. They can bring lots of ideas to the table. It is a matter of time that the town will grow into another CITY in the future in this Southeastern part of Bohol.

6.) Guindulmanons are "beautiful" people genetically. The breeding of the Tamblot tribe that used to live close to Tabajan River and the Spaniards in the Sawang part of Poblacion was the best heritage our forefathers gave us. Tamblot's men were fighting against the Spaniards during Spanish colonization of the Philippines.

7.) Guindulmanons are known to be artists: they are known to be painters, choreographers, dancers, make-up artists, hairstylists, creative songwriters, singers, stage perfomers, and the like. And they like to decorate themselves, one way or another, to be noticed or objects of envy.

8.) Guindulmanons are go-getters (perhaps aggressive sometimes). They know what they want and they go for it.

9.) They are trendsetters of "southeastern" Bohol. They are being looked into, looked at, criticized a lot, or being pulled down but they are resilient. They go up further higher if they are being pulled down.

Those who are Guindulmanon detractors, you can chase us or bring us down, but the entire town will shine.

SHINE GUINDULMAN SHINE.

There are lots of foristas in here that are NOT Guindulmanons. They are here to bring us down. They criticize us to the max. But we, Guindulmanons, know better and they will go and move forward and upward whether you like it or not..

The "doom" curse is nowhere to be found. It is no longer around..!!!

US: 7% fewer illegal immigrants last year

WASHINGTON - The number of illegal immigrants in the United States fell by 7% last year to 10.8 million, coinciding with the country's financial crisis, a Department of Homeland Security report said Tuesday.

The majority of the country's illegal immigrants come from Latin America, with 62% from Mexico (6.7 million), followed by those from El Salvador (530,000), Guatemala (480,000) and Honduras (320,000).

Together with Filipinos (270,000), Latin Americans accounted for 85% of all illegal immigrants in the United States in 2009, the DHS report said.

Suerte pud kay naka kuha man ug GCard.   Naa sab anak sa akong kaila bag-ong graduate naka kuha ug 10 yr tourist visa.  Gi invite sa iyang amiga didto.  Pag abot sa port of entry na secondary interrogate ug gipa ablihan ang luggage ug nakita ang school transcript of records ug diploma.  Gipangutana unsa purpose naka tug-an ang bata na mag apply sya ug trabajo.  Outright sya gi deport.

Right, dili sure na bisan naka landing naka daghan pa mahitabo mao kulba kulba "kono" gihapon.

I agree with you David.  Noting the communications infrastructure in the country, i think wi-max is still using their cellphone tower transmitters but using different frequencies intended for wimax subscribers.  In some articles that I read, wi-max is supposed to have it's own base station transmitters.

I'm fairly happy with wimax.  Viewing youtube videos  and local TV stations streaming is uninterrupted (as what globe sales people kept on saying).  Doing video/voice call in YM / skype is also reliable  (VoIP - voice over IP technology).

Still, it is better to inquire direct with Globe in your area.

Based on this article:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wimax

it appears to be the same as "4G" cellular service, and so we can reasonably assume, until being told otherwise, that it works using the same general cellular mechanism, but requires separate radios.  (You can see what a WiMax base station looks like in the article).

The more interesting question is where this is being deployed, which is where Globe's information is maddeningly vague.

Plan 256 Kbps Bundle (Landline and Internet)
MSF (Monthly Service Fee) = P795.00
Download Speed (up to) = 256 Kbps
Lock-in Period = 24 months
Pre-termination Fee = P2,500.00

I have changed my internet connection from smartbro to globe's wi-max under the above plan.  It's faster than smartbro and connection is quite stable.  Viewing youtube is now faster and uninterrupted.  Globe wi-max can be operated using the indoor antenna or the much faster using the outdoor mounted square antenna (preferred).

There are limitations especially if your are using a pptp VPN connection.  With smartbro this is okay but with globe wi-max, you have to download  OpenVPN.

However, there are times the speed is lower than the max 3 bars. Labina ug daotan ang panahon.   Depende gihapon sa signal and location sa subscriber.  If the area has no cellphone tower (as the term wireless broadband implies), the connection maybe slow in some areas.  Go out and check first your location.  Not all are faster even if naka wi-max.   :'(

Last Monday, I was on a send-off trip to Manila.  Seeing a flock of outbound tourists last Monday to the US at the NAIA was overwhelming. Maayo gani tong akong gihatud kay akong na brief in terms of personal IDs and work leave authorizations, etc. Wa ka demano sa pag fill-up sa form I-94 and the actual interview sa port of entry.  Doubtful ang intention and a conflicting answers with that of the forms they filled-up and a doubtful port of entry with the persons they are staying with.  AND the actual reason in the applicant's DS-156 (now DS 160) is also verified.  Grabe ka strikto na ang US karon labina na nga naa na puy mga threats didto last week (NY bmb scare, neal vinas case, etc).

On a side note.  PAL is still offering 1 free roundtrip ticket to the US with USD 500 allowance for passengers who will give-up their seats for chance passengers  (VIPs, diplomats, etc).  Once you give-up your seat for them, you will be scheduled for another flight schedule (earliest would be next day).    ;)

Current job tenure :  2 yrs

Current mo. salary :  Ps 25K

Family ................:  separated

Of course you have a chance pareng Ali but to tell you honestly it's a 50-50 chance given the above profile.  I'm not discouraging you but if you try to seek an advice from a visa assistance agency, most likely eto then sasabihin sayo. Pasuertihan lang talaga pag ganitong mga profile (tenure and salary and living in an economic situation in manila, etc).  Pag 2 years kasi medyo masasabi na hindi pa stable ang job tenure mo compared to an employee who has for example a ten (10) years of employment with the current company.  Hope you get what I mean.

At saka e dasal mo na pagbigyan ka this time.

Sige, good luck.

If you are at Clark Airport, never get a taxi unless you are as rich as Manny Pacquiao.
Taxi fare to SM Clark (less than 10 kms from the airport) would cost 400-500 pesos depending on the generosity of the taxi driver.

What you should do is to walk up to the gate of the airport (200 meters). Ask any airport security guard as to where you could get a jeep to SM Clark. Once you're in SM Clark, you can get a bus to Subic, Angeles City, Manila or to any places in Luzon.

If you're going to Clark Airport, just take a jeep (destination is "Main Gate") from SM Clark. Just tell the jeepney driver that you want to go to Clark Airport.

Your fare? 10 pesos only.

Say NO to taxi drivers who think you are a millionaire just because you don't speak Tagalog according to their accent.

Sa mga hindi nakapasa last week, sorry.     With the recent turns of events, the US mainland security has been tightened and tightened.  But I still believe that applying in good faith, with sufficient documents, ample time of preparation and confidence in yourself,  everybody has a chance.   Ganyan talaga ang pag apply.  Parang election.  May nagwagi, merong hindi pinalad.  Keep trying until the Lord grants your wish.   ;)   Maybe God has another plan for you. It's not the end of your world if you can't get a tourist visa.

For searchers all over the country reaching this site,  I may entertain your emails and adding you in facebook but I can not guarantee I can help you further.   I suggest you read the link below for a complete guide.  It's all there.

Important announcement in getting US tourist visa effective May 24, 2010.

Source:  http://manila.usembassy.gov

New DS-160 Online Visa Application Form Requirement Effective May 24, 2010.

Effective May 24, 2010, all nonimmigrant visa applicants will be REQUIRED to complete and submit an online visa application form known as the DS-160 Nonimmigrant Visa Electronic Application. The DS-160 Nonimmigrant Visa Electronic Application will replace the current nonimmigrant visa paper application, Forms DS-156/157/158, and other related paper forms.

With demand for U.S. visas continuing to increase worldwide, the U.S. State Department is committed to using new technologies to improve the efficiency and accuracy of the visa application process. The web-based nonimmigrant visa application uses new technologies and replaces existing forms to better serve our visa applicants.

For visa applicants with a visa interview scheduled before May 24, 2010, the DS-156/157/158 and related paper forms will continue to be accepted. Visa applicants with a visa interview scheduled on May 24, 2010, or after MUST complete the DS-160 Online Nonimmigrant Visa Electronic Application. As DS-157 forms will no longer be accepted after this date, the MRV fee payment slip (blue paper) from the bank must be attached to the DS-160 confirmation page when an applicant appears for a visa interview. Applicants can access the DS-160 from the Consular Electronic Application Center website or from the link on the U.S. Embassy website in Manila.

In order to avoid delays in processing visa applications, visa applicants or their representatives must ensure that the following information is correctly provided:

Applicant’s complete name (required format is Surname, First name(s), Middle Name(s))
Applicant’s passport information (the passport used in filling out the form must be the same passport presented on the day of interview)
Other Name(s) (for married female applicants, type your complete maiden name)
Purpose of Trip to the U.S. (if the answer falls under “Other,” it is a requirement to specify the purpose of travel in the blank provided)
Primary Occupation (if the answer falls under “Other,” it is a requirement to specify the occupation in the blank provided)
Contact Person and Contact Address in the United States
Father’s Complete Name (required format is Surname, First name(s), Middle Name(s))
Mother’s Complete Maiden Name (required format is Surname, First name(s), Middle Name(s))
Please review the Frequently Asked Questions for instructions about the DS-160. If you have a question about filling out the online DS-160 that is not answered in the FAQs, please send us an e-mail.

The only change we are implementing at the current time is the use of the DS-160 in lieu of the Electronic Visa Application Form (EVAF). All other visa application procedures remain the same.

1 cluster consists of an average of 5 to 6 precinct depende sa lugar.  So kon na belong ka sa usa ka clusters with 900+ voters,  murag maghulat jud ka ug 3-1/2 hours kay usa raman ka PCOS machine ang gi deploy kada cluster.  Naa priority number gahapon.

In every new system implementation, there is this so called birth pains experience.  People tend to resist to change and acceptn new ideas and some like to live with the old paradigm. There is no such thing as absolute success of an  every (IT) implementation but only a reasonable solution.   The automation went generally fair except on the external processes that should have been ironed-out and should have been done with end-to-end testing weeks before the actual go-live.  The grouping of precincts into clusters caused the bottleneck of the new voting process.

It's generally fair and I'm sure in the next election, areas that need improvement are already identified.

Kudos !!!

Pastilan.  Maayo pa man diay tong mga acacia nga gipamutol !!!

Nganong giputol man?

Kung walay nag order nga epaputol, wala man siguroy problema.   :-[

So kinsay nag order ?

It's totally an outrageous and a preposterous decision to cut those century old trees.

Hi olah06.  Sorry medyo bising bising etong nakaraang araw.

Good luck to the mag ama.

thank you po..=)
God bless..

The Italians : Francesco Molinari, Matteo Manassero (youngest Masters player) and Edoardo Molinari.

It was different, though, was everything else. When Woods made his way from the practice  green to the tee, a roar went up before he was even visible. Another roar came when he arrived on the tee, only this time, he turned in each direction and smiled -- an expression that seemed a mixture of gratitude and relief.

It's far too early to tell what the sequence meant for Woods in his first round, in his quest for a fifth green jacket, or more generally, in his pursuit of Jack Nicklaus' 18 major championships. But it did say plenty about how golf feels about having him back.

(UPDATE) Manuel V. Pangilinan Commencement Address
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Source:  abs-cbnNEWS.com | 04/04/2010 6:36 AM

School of Humanities & School of Social Sciences
Ateneo de Manila University, Quezon City
4:00 p.m., Saturday, 27th March 2010

Magandang hapon sa inyong lahat. I want to thank Father Ben and the Ateneo community for the honor of this doctorate degree. And congratulations to our Law School for having 7 of the 11 â€" ten topnotchers â€" in the recent bar exams!

Father Nebres, Father Magadia, trustees, faculty and staff, parents and siblings, graduates of 2010 â€" many congratulations. Thank you so much for this gift of fellowship with the sesquicentennial class. You‘ve earned your diploma from a great learning institution, and you have every right to be proud. I have wracked my mind and heart with what I should say today. The weeks of fear and worry at the thought of giving this commencement address have made me lose weight, and sleep. And I‘ve asked myself, what I wish I had known at my own graduation day 44 years ago.

The sad truth is that I don‘t even remember who the speaker was at my graduation, or a single word that was said. So I begin these remarks with the expectation that I will soon be forgotten. I‘ve been cautioned that on an occasion as this, graduates are only thinking one of the following thoughts: one â€" I hope these ceremonies finish soon because I can‘t wait to take my vacation. Two â€" inspire me please. There aren‘t too many doing that these days. Three â€" If MVP stops talking before I stop listening, I‘ll give him a big applause. Four â€"If you hand out free tickets to the Justin Timberlake concert tonight, we‘d give you a standing ovation. Yes, I’m happy to say that Smart will be giving away four free tickets right after this ceremony! Now that you‘ve been sufficiently humored and bribed, let me earn my honorary degree, and turn thoughtful and traditional. More to do, more to achieve I come here today with the thought that despite what may seem to be the culmination of a successful life with this honorary degree, there‘s still much to do. I come to say that one‘s title, even an honor like this, says little about how well one‘s life has been led â€"that no matter how much you‘ve done, or how successful you‘ve been, there‘s always more to learn, more to do, more to accomplish. So I want to say to all of you, that despite your remarkable achievement, you too cannot rest on your laurels.

Some graduating classes in the past have marched into this place in times of peace and progress. In those easy times, we could have called on you to keep things merely going, and not screw things up. But we‘re gathered here at a time of trial and transition, not only for this country but also for the world. Our economy slowed down last year because of a global recession â€" the result, in part, of greed and irresponsibility that rippled out from Wall Street. We continue to spend beyond our means. We avoid making the tough, unpopular choices. And in 44 days, we will elect a new set of national and local leaders. For all of you, these challenges are felt now in more immediate and personal terms. You will soon be looking for a job â€" struggling to figure out which career makes sense in this economy of ours. Maybe you have loans, and are worried how you‘ll pay them down. Maybe you‘ve got a family to help. Maybe you‘re asking how your siblings can have an Ateneo education like you had. Against these issues, you may be tempted to fall back on the more visible markers of success â€" by chasing the usual brass rings. How much money you make, a fancy title or a nice car. Being on the roster of the ―rich and famous (or the ―most invited) guest list. But the choice of form over substance, fame over character, short-term gain over long-term goal is precisely what your generation needs to end.

[Defining success

Coming from the Ateneo, I know that the pressure to succeed is immense. In fact, your biggest liability is the need to succeed. And your biggest fear must be the fear of failure. But first, let me define what success is. Let me tell you, money‘s pretty cool. I‘m not going to stand here and tell you that‘s it‘s not about money, because money is sweet. I like money. It‘s good for buying companies and things â€" and for putting up a few buildings here and there for Ateneo. But having a lot of money does not totally make you a successful person. What you want is both money and meaning. You want your life and your career to be meaningful. Because meaning is what brings real richness to your life, to be surrounded by people you can truly work with â€" because you trust and treasure them, and they cherish you in return. That‘s when you‘re really rich, that‘s when you really succeed.

Fear of failure

Let me now deal with failure. On this wonderful day when you stand on the threshold of what is called ―real life, it is â€" ironically â€" the best time to talk about failure. Nobody‘s life is seamless or smooth. We all stumble. We all have setbacks. If things go wrong, you hit a dead end â€" as you will, many times in your life â€" it‘s just life‘s way of saying â€" time to change course. Now I cannot tell you that failure is fun. Periods of failure in my life were dark ones. I‘ve had a lot of success. But I‘ve had a lot of failures. I‘ve looked good. I‘ve looked bad. I‘ve been praised and criticized. And it hurt like hell. But my mistakes have been necessary. I had no idea how far the tunnel of failure extended. And any light at the end of it seemed more hope than reality.

Now let me tell you about some of my biggest failures.

In 1995, first pacific invested in telecommunications in India at a time when the industry there was just getting started. Under the laws of India, foreign investors are allowed to own not more than 49% of a local telco. So we invited an Indian partner to hold the 51% majority. You all know how capital intensive the telco business is. To our utmost regret, our partner could not provide the counterpart capital. The relationship soured, and we had to sell the business. Since then, India‘s telecoms industry has grown exponentially. So we lost significant value by divesting. If we had managed to retain this business, I would not need to make a living giving graduation speeches. But I have had personal failures as well.

I will now let you in on a well-kept secret. I was in 4th year high school in San Beda College, and was in contention to be valedictorian that year. It was an open secret that majority of my classmates were cheating â€"changing answers from true to false, ironically, in our religion exams. I felt I had to do the same to protect my grades. Several of us were caught â€" pero ako ang pinag-initan. I knew I was wrong, and deserved to be punished. Indeed, San Beda stripped me of all my honors. Finally, with the suspicion about rampant cheating, I was asked by the principal to name names. I refused. I disappointed my parents deeply. It took many years for the pain and bitterness to heal. Several years ago, I thought it was time to free myself from the rancor and memory of that experience. What better proof of reconciliation with San Beda than the 3 NCAA championships for the Red Lions?

Failure taught me lessons about myself that I could have learned no other way. I discovered that I had a strong will, and more discipline than I had imagined: I also found out that I had parents whose value was truly priceless. The knowledge that you have emerged wiser and stronger from setbacks means that you can be secure in your ability to survive. You will never truly know yourself, or the strength of your relationships, until both have been tested by adversity. And so rock bottom became the solid foundation on which I rebuilt my life, my career and, most importantly, my moral values. So graduates, always remember this â€" success is never final. Failure is never fatal. It is courage that counts. MVP‘s lessons for life as I come near the end of my remarks, let me wrap up with some old-fashioned, feel-good graduation advice:

First, hug and kiss those who helped get you to this day â€" parents, grandparents, friends, teachers. If you’re too shy or uptight to do that, please do the old fashioned handshake thing. But I recommend a hug and a kiss. Don’t let the sun go down today without saying thank you to someone.

Second, don’t forget that you have a body under your toga. Take good care of it. Engage in sports. It‘s fun, and it is a laboratory for victory and adversity. How an athlete celebrates his triumphs, or overcomes defeat or injury, how he deals with a hostile crowd or a critical media, reflects what life is all about. Indeed, sports offers a richness all its own â€" it is a metaphor for life.

Third, remember you have brains under that mortarboard. You‘ve been running it like crazy for four years, whining about all the books you’ve had to read, the papers you’ve had to write, the tests you’ve had to take. Yet thanks to that versatile, gigabyte hard-drive of yours, and a million Starbucks cups, you made it today.

Fourth, give one peso for every ten you earn. I saw my mother pass away 8 years ago, and she left this world without anything. Which means you’re not the owner of what you think you own â€" you’re only a steward, because everything‘s on loan. So pass some of it on. If you don’t, government will just take it anyway.

Conclusion

As today‘s door closes softly between us, those are my parting words. But there will be other partings and other last words in your lives. But today will not be complete without acknowledging what Father Ben has done for the Ateneo these past 17 years as the university‘s longest serving president â€" the new Loyola Schools, all the new buildings, the UAAP championships and the bonfires. It has been a pleasure working with him. Thank you so much Father Ben.

I do have one last word for you, if I may. This was a gift when I graduated at the age of 19 â€" the gift of friends with whom I sat on graduation day, who remain my friends for life. So today, I wish you nothing better than similar friendships. And tomorrow, I hope that even if you remember not a single word of mine, you will recall those of Seneca, one of the old Romans i met in search of ancient wisdom: ―as is a tale, so is life: not how long it is, but how good it is, is what matters. I will now let you go. Through God‘s providence, may each of you travel well that precious journey called life. And may your future be worthy of your dreams. My deepest thanks for the courtesy and honor you all have shared with me. Many congratulations. God bless you all. Good day and good life.

School of Management & School of Science and Engineering
Ateneo de Manila University, Quezon City
4:00 p.m., Friday, 26th March 2010

Magandang Hapon sa inyong lahat.

Rev. Fr. Nebres, distinguished faculty and staff, proud and relieved parents, graduates of 2010 â€" warmest congratulations. I am pleased to join the fellowship of this sesquicentennial class.

Introduction

It has been more than 40 years since I graduate from what was a small, idyllic university. Wr were an all male institution then, with Maryknoll â€" now Miriam â€" providing some distraction. We wore neckties, and no celfones or Jollibee's were around. Since that time, Jesuit charism has produced many changes at the Ateneo, most notably an increasing engagement with the world â€" pushing the frontiers of depth and universality â€" to use the words of Fr. Adolfo Nicolas. This is consistent with the university's strategic mission of closing the gaps in poverty and competitiveness.

Honoris causa

More than 500 years ago â€" in 1478 â€" the first recorded honorary degree was conferred by Oxford University on Lionel Woodville, who was dean of Exeter University and brother-in-law of King Edward IV. Oxford made him a doctor of Canon Law in a blatant attempt to win the favour of the king.

This is my fourth degree â€" so far. I hear that Oprah Winfrey â€" The big “O” â€" has collected a total of 7 awards. So I have 3 to go!

There's the heavyweight boxer Mike Tyson who got a Doctorate in Humane Letters for his wide range of skills, including biting off the ears of his opponents.

But the indisputable number one awardee must be Sesame Street's Kermit the Frog â€" who was given an Honorary Doctorate of Amphibious Letters by Long Island University!

Quo Vadis?

44 years ago I sat where you now sit, I also thought what you now think â€" What is going to happen to me? Where can I find a job? Am I really graduating a virgin? Perhaps the best way to answer the first two questions â€" only you can answer the third â€" is to point at those sunrise businesses which can best offer opportunities to you for employment and career:

First, businesses unique to our country's geographic or resource advantages such as tourism and mining.

Second, industries that are by-products of our labor mitigation, leaving us for example with a surplus of doctors, nurses, and care givers. And since our population is comparatively young â€" complemented by our warm disposition â€" we are naturally competitive in the medical tourism and retirement businesses.

Third, businesses linked to information and communications technology. The shift to a knowledge based economy is best reflected in the emergence of the country's knowledge process and business process outsourcing (KPO/BPO) markets â€" two of our fast rising industries. This sector generated 7 billion dollars in revenue in 2009, and is expected to realize 17 billion dollars five years from today.

Fourth, infrastructure and utilities. We simply need to build more roads, ports and harbor, power plants, modern airports, especially a new international airport, an efficient transportation system â€" trans, light rail, ships â€" modern hospitals to raise the level of medical care.

Fifth, agriculture. We need to feed our people first. I don't understand and cannot accept, why weer are the world's biggest importer of rice.

Life in the corporation â€" types of bosses

After suggesting where jobs can be found, let me say that most of you will probably work with a boss or with many bossess. Some of them will be first rate and inspiring, but some will make you wonder how they became managers in the first place. Of these managers, four typical types stand out.

First, is the "despotic manager" â€" who rules as if by divine right, because he thinks he is always right. He has a short attention span and expects everything to be done his way, right away. From him you get nothing but fear. Sa PLDT, sila yung tinatawag naming Argentinean o di kaya, Russian. Kasi palagi urgent yan or rush yan!

Second, is the "floater manager" â€" one who rises effortlessly in an organization. He is friends with everyone and doesn't make enemies because he does not make the tough decisions. From him you will learn nothing.

Third, is the "intriguer manager", the corporate rasputin. He operates below the surface and plots against everybody. From him you will get painful ulcers and sleepless nights.

Fourth, is the "narcissist manager", whose self-confidence and charm â€" sometimes combined with handsome or pretty looks â€" push him or her up the corporate ladder. From him you would get no encouragement.

How to manage your boss

On your way to the top, how can you deal with a corporate species called the boss?

First, you must learn how to manage not only your peers sideways, but also your boss upwards. Second, find the gem beneath the rough. Remember your boss will not be flawed in all aspects. Short of being the S/O/B â€" son of the boss â€" he must have had some strengths to have become a maneger. You can have a boss with a fiery temper, but maybe they work like there's no clock. The trick is to know what makes him tick.

Third, be smart, or better yet, smarter than the boss. Fourth, choose your battles. Not all disagreements with your manager will be good for you or your career. Speak out at the opportune time. The Greeks have a term for this â€" it is called "kairos" â€" which is to say the right thing at the right moment. Be sensitive.

The challenges â€" adopt a cause

When I started my own career, I was just like you looking for a job, any job. In fact, I began as an employee â€" as executive assistant to the president of Filoil Marketing wit ha salary of 1,000 pesos a month. And despite my Wharton MBA, I had to train as a salesman for 6 months working in many parts of Mindanao. It took persistence and patience and years of waiting until I finally became my own boss. Was I scared? You bet! Transitioning from employee to entrepreneur was like starting all over again. In 1981, I founded First Pacific with 6 people, 50 square meters of office space, and little capital. It was like the first day of school for me, and I couldn't call my mother to hold my hand.

So the struggles I faced to make it to this podium today reflect the struggles of so many other Filipinos born without privilege or pedigree.

I was born poor. My father started his career as a messenger at Philippine National Bank. His father began his â€" as a public school teacher in Apalit, Pampanga. As a young student, I lived on a 25-centavo daily allowance. Scholarships sustained my education from my elementary days at San Beda College all the way to my MBA at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania.

I grew up in Little Baguio, San Juan â€" along Barasoain Street. Our modest house stood right on the boundary of a squatter settlement. From my bedroom window, I could see, smell, and feel the lives of the poor firsthand â€" mga away ng mag-asawa at ng kanilang mga kabit halos araw-araw, mga taong naliligo sa may kanto, mga batang dumaraming parang kabute kada taon.

So whenever I look back on my years here at the Ateneo â€" I do have one lasting memory, and that's about the poor, and about helping them â€" on Saturdays when I would teach catechism at the National Mental Hospital in Mandaluyong, and Sundays amongst squatter families in Sapang Palay.

And my interest in sports has emphatically proven how basketball or boxing or cycling provides an escape from the poverty trap. Look no further than Manny Pacquiao as an example. And there are other equally inspiring success stories.

Joel Calderon was last year's Padyak Pinoy Tour of Champions. He is a tricycle driver in Guimba, Nueva Ecija who had to leave his job to train for this summer bikathon. Joel won, riding an old model bicycle borrowed from his teenage nephew. His proud father trundled his tricycle from Guimba to Baguio, 120 kilometers distant, to witness his son's glorious moment â€" finishing the 195-kilometer race in 5 hours, 58 minutes, 37 seconds.

Annie Albania is a member of our national women's boxing team. She comes from Poblacion, South Cotabato. And is the youngest of six children. Her father was a palay farmer who tilled the family's ancestral land of 2 hectares to put food in the mouths of his children. Annie's father died six years ago, leaving the task of bread winning to Annie. It was in the sport of boxing that she cast her lot. With determination and diligence, Annie is now the country's best lady boxer. And she will step onto the biggest stage of her life â€" the London Olympics in 2012 â€" hopefully with the country's first Olympic gold.

So graduates, for the Joel's and Annie;s of this country â€" take up a cause. Let your passion give force and moment to that cause. Be brave enough to live life passionately. You have to leave the city of your comfort and go into the wilderness of your passion.

And if you make your cause the focus of your career, that would be great. But even if you spend a few hours each week, a few days each month, you could still change lives. Even the life of one, single person. Few will have the resources to bend history itself. But each of you can work to change a small corner of this country of ours for the better. It is in the total of your individual acts that will be written the history of this generation.

Conclusion

I'd liek to close now by saying that to be truly successful, you have to stand for something larger than yourself, to use your life in service to someone else's. Beyond your immediate concern about jobs and career, there is the broader imperative of nation building â€" one of the 3 themes of Ateneo's sesqui.

The notion of nation building was best captured by India's first Prime Minister Nehru when he said, on the eve of Indian independence in August 1947: "The service of India means the service of millions who suffer. It means ending poverty and ignorance and disease and inequality of opportunity." And then referring to Mahatma Gandhi, Nehru added: "The ambition of the greatest man of our generation has been to wipe every tear from every eye. That may be beyond us, but as long as there are tears and suffering, our work will not be over."

Whilst our work in this country is indeed far from over, may everyone on this occasion resolve to wipe every tear â€" in every eye â€" of every Filipino.

Finally, let me leave you with the wisdom of my fellow doctorate, Kermit the Frog, in his own commencement address â€" "You are no longer tadpoles. The time has come for you to drop your tails and leave this swamp. But I'm sure that wherever I go as I travel around the world, I will find each and every one of you working your tails off to save other swamps.

Again, many congratulations. God bless all of you. Good luck and good life.

Tiger Woods answers questions for the first time since scandal
Golfdigest.com

Tiger Woods hadn't answered questions until Sunday night about his infidelity.
From combined reports
March 21, 2010
A contrite Tiger Woods took questions from reporters in two separate interviews on Sunday, acknowledging that his public image differed drastically from a private life of marital misconduct.

"I was living a life of a lie, I really was," Woods told ESPN's Tom Rinaldi, in an interview that aired Sunday evening. "And I was doing a lot of things ... that hurt a lot of people. And stripping away denial and rationalization you start coming to the truth of who you really are and that can be very ugly. But then again, when you face it and you start conquering it and you start living up to it, the strength that I feel now ... I've never felt that type of strength.

After announcing that he would end his extended hiatus from competitive golf at the Masters in two weeks, Woods conducted separate interviews with ESPN and Golf Channel at Isleworth, the golf club near his home on Windermere, Fla. While neither outlet was restricted on questions, both were given a five-minute time limit.

While declining to answer questions about the specifics of the Nov. 27 auto accident that triggered the series of revelations about Woods' extramarital affairs, Woods did admit to damaging his relationship with everyone from his wife to sponsors to fans. In both private and family counseling, Woods said, "It was really tough to look at yourself in a light you never want to look at yourself, that's pretty brutal."

"I hurt a lot of people, not just my wife," he told Rinaldi on Sunday. "My friends, my colleagues, the public, kids who looked up to me. There were a lot of people that thought I was a different person and my actions were not according to that. That's why I had to apologize. I was so sorry for what I had done."

In his Golf Channel interview with Kelly Tilghman, Woods denied that members of his inner circle were complicit in arranging his affairs.

"It was all me. I'm the one who did it. I'm the one who acted the way I acted. No one knew what was going on when it was going on," Woods said. "I'm sure if more people would have known in my inner circle, they would have stopped it or tried to put a stop to it. But I kept it all to myself."

Following the interview, Tilghman reported that Ari Fleischer, the one-time White House spokesman for George W. Bush, had withdrawn his services as a public-relation consultant to Woods because he had become too much of a distraction.

Woods has not competed since winning the Australian Masters last November. He said he didn't know what to expect when he returns at Augusta National, where he has won four green jackets.

"I'm a little nervous about that to be honest with you," Woods told ESPN. "It would be nice to hear a couple claps here and there."
