A WISE MAN ONCE SAID

12. There's almost never a reason to comment on someone's weight. Just say, "You look fantastic." If they want to talk about losing weight, they will;

13. When someone shows you a photo on their phone, don't swipe left or right. You never know what's next;

14. If a colleague tells you they have a doctors' appointment, don't ask what it's for, just say "I hope you're okay". Don't put them in the uncomfortable position of having to tell you their personal illness. If they want you to know, they'll do so without your inquisitiveness;

15. Treat the cleaner with the same respect as the CEO. Nobody is impressed at how rude you can treat someone below you but people will notice if you treat them with respect;

16. If a person is speaking directly to you, staring at your phone is rude;

17. Never give advice until you're asked;

18. When meeting someone after a long time, unless they want to talk about it, don't ask them their age and salary;

19. Mind your business unless anything involves you directly - just stay out of it;

20. Remove your sunglasses if you are talking to anyone in the street. It is a sign of respect. Moreso, eye contact is as important as your speech; and

21. Never talk about your riches in the midst of the poor. Similarly, don't talk about your children in the midst of the barren.

Ange Kouame is a naturalized Filipino basketball player who plays for Gilas Pilipinas, the national team of the Philippines. He was born in Abidjan, Ivory Coast on July 25, 1998. Kouame is now set to play for UB Chartres Metropole, a French club that competes in the third tier of French basketball called Nationale Masculine 1². He announced his move on social media on October 8, 2023². He hopes to improve his skills and experience in Europe and eventually play in the EuroLeague, which is his dream². He also plans to continue representing Gilas Pilipinas in future tournaments, such as the FIBA World Cup in 2023.

Kouame is known for his length, athleticism, defense, and energy. He idolizes NBA All-Star Joel Embiid, who is also from Africa³. Gilas Pilipinas has a chance to qualify for the Paris Olympics, but it will not be easy. According to the FIBA World Cup ranking, Gilas Pilipinas finished 24th out of the 32 teams and secured one of the 19 Olympic Qualifying Tournament (OQT) berths⁵. The OQT will be a more difficult competition since Gilas Pilipinas will face other teams from different continents, including Europe, Africa, and the Americas⁴⁵.

The OQT will have 24 teams divided into four groups, with the winners of each group advancing to the Paris Olympics⁵. The other teams that will join Gilas Pilipinas in the OQT are Finland, New Zealand, Lebanon, Mexico, Angola, Cameroon, Bahamas, Bahrain, Poland, and Croatia⁴⁵. The remaining eight teams will be determined by the final ranking of the World Cup.

Gilas Pilipinas will need to play their best basketball and hope for some luck in the draw to make it to the Paris Olympics. It will be a tough challenge, but not impossible. Gilas Pilipinas has shown that they can compete with some of the best teams in the world, and they have the talent and heart to make their country proud. I wish them all the best in their quest for Olympic glory.

You are my eldest son and you are supposed to have your own disposition. You should have played the role of mediator between your siblings. You should not have taken sides.

Why implicate me in this intra-corporate disputes? I am your mother Roy. Please respect me.

All I am asking from the four of you is to return my shares from the companies which your father and I toiled day and night to provide you and your siblings a secure future and to be of service to the people?

Why is it so hard for the four of you to heed my plea? If Ginnette and Leo Rey readily gave in to rerurn my shares, why, you, Emily, Celina and Ricky are too hard on me? Am I asking too much from the four of you?

Am I right to say that the four of you are afraid to return my shares because I will squander it to help the needy or give them to our employees? All of you are financially well-off. You have more than enough without my shares. Without my shares you can all live comfortably. Do not let your heart be consumed by greed.

I am spending huge amounts for my medical missions twice a year to help the medical needs of those who cannot afford it. I am not doing it for myself but for the good name of our family. I want the people to remember that we have a heart for those who need us. This is our way of giving back to the public for their continued support and trust in us.

I am appealing to you as your mother. I cannot and will never forsake you as my son. In your July 20 interview with media during your Sambok takeover, you had told reporters that it is I, your mother, who helped you when you were just starting a family. How Filipinos can turn from disaster victims to victors through science and innovation

Mindanao has faced several major disasters in the past decade, such as Tropical Storm Sendong in 2011, severe El Niño effects from 2015 to 2016, earthquakes in 2019, and heavy rainfall-related incidents in 2022. These events caused by natural hazards have claimed many lives and damaged properties. But does that mean that disasters are inevitable?

Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Renato U. Solidum Jr. challenged this notion in his keynote speech at the opening of the 2023 Handa Pilipinas: Innovations in Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Exposition for the Mindanao Leg with the theme, "Enhancing Resilience and Sustainability for Mindanao" held on October 04, 2023 at the Limkektai Luxe Hotel in Cagayan de Oro City.

"Disasters are not natural. They are the result of our failure to anticipate, prevent, mitigate, and prepare for natural hazards. They are the consequence of our lack of use of scientific information to guide our planning, decision making, and action. They are the outcome of our poor coordination and collaboration in responding to their impacts," said Secretary Solidum.

He explained that building resilience is crucial for Mindanao, as disasters can undo the progress made in development. He said that as Mindanao strives to boost its economy, it also needs to protect its resources and wealth from climate and disaster risks.

He also pointed out that the Philippines remains the most vulnerable country in terms of natural hazards and climate change. According to the World Risk Report 2023, the Philippines ranked first among 193 countries for the second consecutive year. Climate change is increasing the intensity and uncertainty of existing hazard events, affecting the most vulnerable communities disproportionately.

"But we also have an opportunity to change this narrative. We need to take a firm stand and commitment to reduce our vulnerabilities and create our own Filipino brand of resilience. And we cannot do that alone. We need the whole-of-society to make our vision of safer, adaptive, climate and disaster-resilient Filipino communities towards sustainable development a reality," said Sec. Solidum.

He added that the Philippines, known as an archipelago of risks, has experienced many disasters in Mindanao. Some of the notable ones are Tropical Storm Sendong in 2011, which killed over 1000 people and affected nearly 700,000 people; El Niño from 2015 to 2016, which caused states of calamity in areas like Maguindanao and Cotabato City; a series of earthquakes in 2019, which caused significant damage; and heavy rainfall in 2022, which led to fatal incidents in Maguindanao del Norte, highlighting the region's vulnerability.

Popular tourist destinations are flooded by visitors. Leading tourist sites in Beijing received 6.83 million tourists in the first three days of the holiday, up 60.6 percent year-on-year and up 31.8 percent over that of 2019.

Dunhuang, in northwest China's Gansu Province, home to a UNESCO World Heritage site, recorded 28,000 visitors on the first day of the holiday, an increase of 58.45 percent over that of 2019.

The surge of visitors not only results from people's eagerness to travel after the COVID-19 pandemic but also from continuous efforts from local tourism industries to explore unique cultural and historical attractions.

During the eight-day holiday, Kuanzhai Alley, a traditional neighborhood in the southwestern Chinese city of Chengdu, recreated night bazaars of Tang (618-907) and Song dynasties (960-1279).

Walking along the winding alleys, visitors bump shoulders with people dressed up as ancient figures and experience shopping in ancient ways.

"It feels like time travel back to ancient days. My daughter is thrilled," said a visitor surnamed Yang from southeast China's Fujian Province. Her six-year-old daughter was also wearing a traditional dress.

The "red" tourist destinations, which featured the country's revolutionary history, also draw visitors driven by their love for the nation."

Tom and Dick Smothers came to CBS in 1967 not really intending to lead or support a revolution. They just got caught up in it — and they happened to have a network program, with some 30 million viewers, on which they criticized the war in Vietnam, celebrated rock 'n' roll music and satirized politicians and popular culture.

The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour got its message out slowly and sometimes sneakily at first. A lot of it came through the music and the amazing new acts booked to perform on air.

Over the run of the show, it was like a series of anthems from the counterculture — from Buffalo Springfield singing "For What It's Worth" to the Beatles singing "Revolution" — with the explosive American TV debut of The Who, and the West Coast cast of Hair, and Dion singing a song about assassinated heroes in between.

The Beatles didn't appear live to sing "Hey Jude" and "Revolution." They'd gotten disinterested in touring by 1968, so they made these new things called videos, and gave them to only one TV program in the United States. Not to The Ed Sullivan Show, which had helped launch Beatlemania and the British invasion four years before — but to the Smothers Brothers.

That same year, George Harrison of the Beatles showed up unannounced — not to sing, but to support Tom and Dick in their fight against the CBS censors. By then, the fights had become almost legendary. Tom confessed to Harrison that on American television, they didn't always get the chance to say what they wanted to say, and Harrison advised, "Whether you can say it or not, keep trying to say it."

At first, the censored bits were silly, like an Elaine May sketch about, ironically, censorship.
But quickly, the jokes became political, and battle lines were drawn. CBS was like a stern parent, placing more and more restrictions on a rebellious teenager — and Tom, especially, got more rebellious. He and brother Dick and the rest, including head writer Mason Williams (who unveiled his hit instrumental "Classical Gas" on the show), put more meat and meaning into the program — or tried to.
Other legendary writers on the show included Steve Martin and Bob Einstein.

A skit poking fun at LBJ got the president to call CBS Chairman William Paley in the middle of the night to complain — which, in turn, led to Paley asking the show to ease up on its presidential satire. In return, Paley agreed to break the 17-year blacklist on folksinger Pete Seeger, who appeared in 1967 to sing, as part of an anti-war medley, a new song he'd written called "Waist Deep in the Big Muddy," an obvious allegory about the Vietnam War and Johnson himself.

CBS cut the song, Tom went to the press to complain — and the following year, in a triumphant performance, Seeger was asked back. It was during this appearance that he was allowed to sing his song about soldiers trying to ford an unexpectedly deep river.

Other segments produced for the show never saw the light of day — or, at least, the prime time of night. For its first show after the violence-filled 1968 Democratic National Convention, Comedy Hour had Harry Belafonte sing a medley of calypso songs, with reworked lyrics to reflect the disarray and dissent in America — while news footage of police brutality and student protests was projected behind him.

That never made it to air. Nor did a comic sermonette by comedian David Steinberg, whose mortal sin, to CBS, was making fun of religion at all. His first sermon got more negative mail than anything in the history of TV up to that point. When Tom asked him back, CBS ordered there be no sermon. Steinberg delivered one anyway — about Jonah and the whale.

Not only was that sketch cut, but the entire show was pulled from the air — and shortly thereafter, the Smothers Brothers were fired. They took CBS to court for breach of contract and eventually won a settlement close to $1 million, but they lost their platform.

The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour influenced all satirical political shows that followed, from Saturday Night Live to Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, John Oliver and Samantha Bee. Comedy Hour also contributed one of the best political satires ever — a literal running gag in which series regular Pat Paulsen ran for the presidency.

The Comedy Hour lasted into the early months of the Nixon administration, which were prefaced by the brothers' on-air promise, in a tongue-in-cheek manner, to "lay off the jokes" toward the president-elect ... at least for a while.

On their final show, Dick read a letter he and Tom had gotten from former President Johnson. These days, President Trump responds to Saturday Night Live skits with angry tweets. Back then, Johnson, reflecting on his treatment by the Smothers Brothers, responded by writing:

"It is part of the price of leadership of this great and free nation to be the target of clever satirists. You have given the gift of laughter to our people. May we never grow so somber or self-important that we fail to appreciate the humor in our lives."

When Nixon's "Enemies" list was leaked to the press, the Smothers Brothers were included...Tom Smothers wryly commented..."well he was on mine before I was on his".

As we watch the convergence of the Moon, Jupiter, and Saturn that will culminate on the eve of the winter solstice this year, I can't help but to marvel at another convergence. The right people with the right voice, and the the right platform at precisely the right time.

4. Nobody is perfect and nobody is truly happy with their lot. When that sinks in you are free of comparison and free of judgement. It's truly liberating.

5. No one really sees what you do right, everyone sees what you do wrong. When that becomes clear to you, you will start doing things for the right reason and you will start having so much more fun.

6. You will regret the years you spent berating your looks, the sooner you can make peace with the vessel your soul lives in, the better. Your body is amazing and important but it does not define you.

7. Your health is obviously important but stress, fear and worry are far more damaging than any delicious food or drink you may deny yourself. Happiness and peace are the best medicine.

8. Who will remember you and for what, become important factors as you age. Your love and your wisdom will live on far longer than any material thing you can pass down. Tell your stories, they can travel farther than you can imagine.

9. We are not here for long but if you are living against the wind it can feel like a life-sentence. Life should not feel like a chore, it should feel like an adventure.

10. Always, always, drink the good champagne and use the things you keep for 'best'. Tomorrow is guaranteed to no one. Today is a gift that's why we call it the present. Eat, Drink & Be Merry.

BREAKING: In 2024, Toyota plans to introduce a compact version of the Land Cruiser to compete with the 5-door Jimny.

The upcoming Toyota Land Cruiser Mini is expected to make its global debut at the Tokyo Motor Show next month, ahead of its entry into the Asian market in 2024. Toyota is in the process of developing a new compact off-roader aimed at competing with the Suzuki Jimny. Reports from Japanese media suggest that this new vehicle may be offered with hybrid and electric powertrain options.

The Toyota 'Land Cruiser Mini' is set to be introduced in the coming year and will be the production version of the Compact Cruiser EV concept that was showcased a couple of years ago. It may also be marketed under names like 'Lite Cruiser' or 'Yaris Cruiser.' While the concept featured an electric powertrain, the production-spec SUV will also come with a combustion engine option, and it's likely that a hybrid or petrol engine will be a popular choice. The recent debut of the all-new Prado included a teaser revealing the silhouette of this smaller Land Cruiser.

The design of the Land Cruiser Mini closely mirrors that of the Compact Cruiser concept, featuring tall pillars and a nearly flat roofline. According to reports, this compact Land Cruiser will be roughly the same size as the Corolla Cross and will be longer than the five-door Suzuki Jimny. In a bid to compete directly with the Jimny, it will be built on a body-on-frame chassis, deviating from the previously anticipated TNGA-C architecture.

It is estimated to possess overall dimensions of approximately 4,350 mm in length, 1,860 mm in width, and 1,880 mm in height. Although it could match the height of the latest Prado, it will be notably more compact in size. The exterior design is expected to draw strong inspiration from the Compact Cruiser concept, and we might anticipate circular LED headlamps and a spare wheel mounted on the tailgate to create an authentic appearance. Internally referred to as the 'Jimny killer,' this vehicle might make its global debut at the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show.
