Although there are no cyclones near the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) at this time, Filipinos may have to keep their jackets handy for the next few weeks, state weather forecasters said Monday.

PAGASA forecaster Alvin Pura said the northeast monsoon will continue to bring cold weather to the country until late February.

"Simula ng malamig January at February hanggang late February," Pura said in an interview on dzBB radio.

The country is recovering from rain and floods brought by Tropical Depression Bising, which already exited the PAR early Monday morning, January 14.

Bising, the second cyclone for 2013, had brought floods to parts of Mindanao.

Pura said that as of Monday, they see no new weather disturbance in the vicinity of the PAR that could become a cyclone.

"Wala na tayong nakikita sa loob ng PAR na LPA, kahit sa labas ng PAR," he said. â€" TJD, GMA News

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) has recorded the coldest temperature in Metro Manila for this season on Thursday morning.

PAGASA weather forecaster Aldczar Aurelio said an 18.8 degree-Celsius temperature had been recorded in the vicinity of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Pasay City, 6 am on January 17.

"This is the lowest temperature in (Metro) Manila of the season," Aurelio confirmed.

But he clarified Pasay is not an ideal location to measure temperatures considering the pressures coming from the planes taking off and landing at airports.

Citing more reliable records in PAGASA, Aurelio noted they recorded 19.5 degree Celsius as the official lowest temperature to be experienced in Manila as of January 17.

He said the temperature was recorded at around 6 a.m. on Thursday inside the main headquarters of PAGASA in the Science Garden, Quezon City.

The weather forecaster explained the cold weather is brought about by the Northeast Monsoon or Hanging Amihan and winter winds coming from China and Siberia.

Students break record by folding toilet paper 13 times
15:01 11 January 2012
http://www.newscientist.com/

It may look like a prank but these mathematics students from St. Mark's School in Southborough, Massachusetts aren't toilet papering the famed infinite corridor at MIT. Using intricate choreography and brute force, they're breaking a paper-folding record by completing 13 folds, a challenge that students at the school have been tackling for seven years with the help of teacher James Tanton.

Based on the thickness of a sheet of paper, a formula can be used to calculate the minimum length needed to fold it a given number of times. Paper roughly doubles in size with each fold and the sides become more rounded, making it harder and harder to bend. Wrinkles also have a significant impact, making the formula difficult to follow in practice. In addition, no single roll is long enough to fold thirteen times, requiring the group to tape together numerous rolls of industrial toilet paper 1.2 kilometers long.

To achieve the feat, the students first arranged and taped 64 layers of paper into the physical structure of the sixth fold. When you fold paper, the layers on the end form a pattern of peaks and valleys, so the configuration mimicked these layers to accommodate the 16 kilometers of paper inside. The students then proceeded to physically fold the stack. The final result was a 1.5-metre wide and 76-centimetre high wad comprising 8192 layers of paper.

Although no official rules govern the record, the students decided that the folds must be in one direction and that the complete structure should be freestanding.

Until 2002, it was thought that paper could only be folded a maximum of seven times. High school student Britney Gallivan dispelled the popular myth by resolving the mathematics and successfully folding a single roll of toilet paper twelve times in a record-breaking feat.

Do you think Stacie Halas, or any teacher with a porn star past, should be allowed to continue teaching?

The 32-year-old former porn star was dismissed in April 2012 from her science teaching position at Haydock Intermediate School in Oxnard, California. The firing occurred after graphic videos made during a nine month long career in pornography were found on the internet by Halas’ students and coworkers.

The Ventura County Star writes that Halas has the right to appeal the ruling to Ventura County Superior Court. Richard Schwab, legal representation for Stacie Halas, has not confirmed if that is the path his client intends to take. On Tuesday he remarked on the panel’s decision:

“We are very disappointed, obviously. With all due respect to the commission’s decision, we do believe Ms. Halas was being honest and forthright but was extremely embarrassed and humiliated by her previous experience in the adult industry. I believe this matter sadly indicates that when people have a past which is not criminal or hurts other individuals, they may not be able to be remediated or redemptive because of their past experience.”

Do you think Stacie Halas, or any teacher with a porn star past, should be allowed to continue teaching?
#29939
The Associated Press reports that the accessibility of the porn videos across the internet also played a role in the panel’s ruling. In an excerpt from the near 50 page decision by the Commission on Professional Competence, Judge Julie Cabos-Owen wrote the following:

“Although [Halas'] pornography career has concluded, the ongoing availability of her pornographic materials on the internet will continue to impede her from being an effective teacher and respected colleague. While [Halas] failed to establish that she can be trusted as a role model for children or an example of redemption, the circumstances of this case most certainly demonstrate that one’s decisions and conduct, particularly continual deceit, must bring with them certain consequences.”

Stacie Halas, a porn star turned California middle school teacher, has lost an appeal to return to the classroom. She was fired in April after X-rated videos she participated in were discovered by students and staff.

A unanimous decision by a panel comprised of three judges concluded that Halas is unfit to return to her teaching position. The panel’s finding was reportedly based around the former teacher’s continual dishonesty to employers regarding her pornographic background.

The Philippines may boast of being the social networking hub, but nearly four out of five Pinoy adults still have no Internet access at home, results of a new poll showed.

A total of 79 percent of Filipinos reported being offline at home, U.S.-based pollster Gallup found in a survey of 1,000 adults in each of 148 countries globally.

The report put the Philippines among the 100 countries where less than a majority of respondents answered yes when asked the question "Does your home have access to the Internet?"

Related story: UN report: Internet access still low in PH

This, even as Gallup stressed that the results "reflect the percentage of adults who answered yes, rather than the percentage of households in a given country with Internet access."

"Additionally, it is possible that adults have access to the Internet through other means, including schools and universities, public libraries, Internet cafes, and smartphones," Gallup said.

However, the recent findings are consistent with a United Nations report in September, which claimed that 71 percent of Pinoys had no access to Internet through any means.

Asia | Middle East / Taiwan confiscates 435 dog penises
January 16, 2013, 10:19:21 PM
AFP News â€" 6 hours ago

Animal disease officials in Taiwan have confiscated more than 400 dried dog penises, testicles and various internal organs in a raid on an illegal slaughterhouse.

A total of 435 penises were discovered in a fridge along with the other body parts, while 12 fresh dog corpses were also found in the raid at the slaughterhouse in western Yunlin county on Tuesday, the Animal Disease Control Centre said.

It was not immediately clear why the owner of the abattoir kept the body parts, a spokeswoman said. But local media suggested the man could have used the penises as an ingredient in herbal wine due to the belief they could help boost male potency.

Two live dogs were rescued during the raid and officials also discovered a number of collars, indicating some of the dead animals could have previously been pets, the spokeswoman said.

The owner of the facility, who is suspected of selling dog meat as food, has a previous record of killing animals, she said.

He could face a maximum one-year jail term and a fine of up to Tw$1 million ($34,500) if found to be a repeat violator of the animal protection law, which bans the killing of dogs.

While dog meat featured on menus in Taiwan in the past, it is now an offence to eat either dogs or cats and anyone doing so faces fines of up to Tw$500,000 under local law.

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet -- The newly installed Benguet police director wants age of criminals to be pegged at 10 years old as minors are becoming rampant offenders in the province.

Police Senior Superintendent Rodolfo Azurin expressed his sentiments over the problem on minors in front of the Provincial Board last Monday. He said minors had been reported to him as one of the major problems in Benguet during the past years.

He said minors are used by high profile robbers in sneaking into the different houses, especially in La Trinidad, because of the protection to minors the laws provide.

He added most of the arrested robbers were minors and some gangs, which are still roaming around are groups of minors.

During the discussion, some board members cited some sitios in La Trinidad where robbery happens in every house. They expressed their fears because the robbers might posses some firearms.

However, police personnel from the town assured the officials the robbers are just minors and are not professional thieves.

La Trinidad police force showed their frustrations on continuously arresting minors but the suspects still keep on doing the same illegal activity because of the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act of 2006 prohibiting punishment on minors even if they committed crimes.

Azurin admitted they have this dilemma on how to discipline kids in Benguet not to enter into such criminal activity.

He said if only the decision-makers could amend the juvenile act, he will urge the officials to lower the age limit of criminals to 10 as a disciplinary measure for minors who are engaging in illegal acts.

The new provincial police director of Benguet committed to closely negotiate with the decisionâ€"makers in the National Government to introduce amendments on the juvenile act. “As long as minors are offenders, they should be sanctioned.”

“English as she is spoke” â€" the best Portuguese/English translation ever
http://deepbrazil.com/

“What news tell me? All hairs dresser are newsmonger” â€" a phrase that you could use to insult a barber.

“It is a noise which to cleve the head” â€" useful if you have to complain against the orchestra.

“Let aim it! Let make fire him” â€" good for hunters.

These pearls are part of the phrase-book “English as she is spoke”, written in 1855 by two Portuguese authors, José da Fonseca and Pedro Carolino. They (obviously) didn’t know any English and used Portuguese-to-French and French-to-English dictionaries to build their book. The unintentional humor was praised by (sarcastic) American writer Mark Twain, that wrote in the introduction of the 1883 edition: “it is perfect, it must and will stand alone: its immortality is secure. This celebrated little phrase-book will never die while the English language lasts”.

This rather strange, otherworldly wordless picture book features a cartoonish-looking frog and mouse who go exploring on their bike in the middle of the night. The ride takes them through odd-looking forests, down under the ground, and into the ocean. Before heading out, however, they each have a salad-a bowl of bugs for Frog and lettuce and tomato for Mouse. As the ride continues, Frog and Mouse encounter odd-colored animals with oversize eyes, a scaly orange dragon, gremlins, and blue snakes and kiwis. With long fangs and an angry stare, the dragon looks scary but turns out to be quite friendly. He leads the pair underground where they meet up with a pink and orange video-gaming batlike creature. The four new friends explore a deserted town before heading out to the ocean. More fantastic and dangerous creatures await them, along with some friendly mauve-colored porpoises. Tired but happy, the four creatures greet the dawn from a cliff overlooking the ocean. The illustrations are rendered in crayon, watercolor, and ink in a style that is reminiscent of '80s monster cartoons or movies. Some children will enjoy the detail on each page, and the spread depicting the underwater world is colorful and attractive. However, other children will find the creatures' strange faces and features too frightening. The dust cover opens out into a poster. The Chinese Knew About It

This drawing is entitled "The Old Method Chart of the Seven Multiplying Squares".

It is from the front of Chu Shi-Chieh's book "Ssu Yuan Yü Chien" (Precious Mirror of the Four Elements), written in AD 1303 (over 700 years ago, and more than 300 years before Pascal!), and in the book it says the triangle was known about more than two centuries before that.

Pascal's Triangle can show you how many ways heads and tails can combine. This can then show you "the odds" (or probability) of any combination.

For example, if you toss a coin three times, there is only one combination that will give you three heads (HHH), but there are three that will give two heads and one tail (HHT, HTH, THH), also three that give one head and two tails (HTT, THT, TTH) and one for all Tails (TTT). This is the pattern "1,3,3,1" in Pascal's Triangle.

Symmetrical

And the triangle is also symmetrical. The numbers on the left side have identical matching numbers on the right side, like a mirror image.

Fibonacci Sequence

Try this: make a pattern by going up and then along, then add up the values (as illustrated) ... you will get the Fibonacci Sequence.

(The Fibonacci Sequence starts "1, 1" and then continues by adding the two previous numbers, for example 3+5=8, then 5+8=13, etc)

Horizontal Sums

What do you notice about the horizontal sums?

Is there a pattern? Isn't it amazing! It doubles each time (powers of 2).

Odds and Evens

If you color the Odd and Even numbers, you end up with a pattern the same as the Sierpinski Triangle.

Diagonals

The first diagonal is, of course, just "1"s, and the next diagonal has the Counting Numbers (1,2,3, etc).

The third diagonal has the triangular numbers

(The fourth diagonal, not highlighted, has the tetrahedral numbers.)

One of the most interesting Number Patterns is Pascal's Triangle (named after Blaise Pascal, a famous French Mathematician and Philosopher).

To build the triangle, start with "1" at the top, then continue placing numbers below it in a triangular pattern.

Each number is just the two numbers above it added together (except for the edges, which are all "1").

While the shaman is measuring life, 4 to 5 young women nervously dance behind her, their fingers stiffly stretched, their hands moving from side to side while the skip and bounce from left to right.  The moral support they lend strengthens the healing powers of the alamoos.  Menfolk bring two altars with offerings in front of the sick.  The first is called maligay, a single bamboo pole 1 m tall, festooned with elaborate bamboo skewers, which feature layered shavings made by delicately  whittling, without removing, the outer skin of the stick.  The shavings are formed like flowers at the top.  Guava, makopa, and other fruits of the season, as well as filets of meat and fish, are placed on the sharp ends of the skewers.  Thesecond is called sapak (a bamboo pole 1.3 meters tall).  Its top is split into eight parts, pried open in to the shape of a funnel, on which an antique blue and white china is firmly set.  Offerings of cooked rice and betel chew are also set down nearby.

Faglong and tangungo music continues to be played during the healing ritual, creating an atmosphere of merriment.  Feeling she has done all she can to heal the sick, and fatigued by the whole process, the alamoos motions to some men to help her lift the sick.  The tangungo strikes a lilting melody, making everybody move in quick animated fashion.  Food and betel chew from the maligay and sapak altars are given to the sick.  The tangungo strikes a lilting melody, making verybody move in quick animated fashion.  Food and betel chew from the maligay and sapak altars are given to the sick.  Though weak and unable to stand unaided, he is forced to walk and take slow dance steps.  Seeing no improvement in his condition, more food is administered to him by the alamoos.  Other participants help themselves to the altar food.  Feeling well or not, the patient slowly swaggers and staggers into the dance.  With great effort he tries to follow the tempo, falling and stumbling along the way.  But his participation is supposed to signify that the power of prayer and incantation has alerted the diwata and has helped to cure the sick.

Another dance is the asbulong which depicts a healing ritual.  The absulong is officiated by the alamoos, also known as malong, usually female, who dances around the sick person, shouts incantations, and brandishes a handful of leaves and flowers.  With these, she occasionally strikes the sick person's forehead, arms, torso, legs and feet.  At times she holds his arms, and pulls him up in an effort to revive him.  Putting down the plants, she squats on one side of the sick and extends her left arm over his chest.  At this point, the alamoos is prepared to determine whether her patient will live or die.  With a dangkal (span of her right palm), she measures her extended left arm from shoulder to middle finger tip.  Usually, she gets three to three and half dangkal, depending on her palm span.  If her last dangkal goes beyond her left hand's middle finger, her patient will live.  The extra finger length signifies a new lease on life.  But if her last dangkal lands squarely at the tip of her middle finger, it means the sick is going to die, unless sacrifices, offerings, and prayers are immediately made to the divinities and life-giving deities.  The music of the faglong, which has ben playing all the time, is slowly drowned by the music of the tangungo which is now being played to a frenzy.

The mihag sugon is a dance drama on gathering honey.  The Bilaan woodlands abound with beehives.  Honey is a delicacy among the people, and is gathered by many Bilaan men.  The dance drama muhag sugon unfolds with a man moving about in a walk-dance sequence.  He looks around constantly, searching for a beehive.  He is strumming a faglong, the music fast and melodic, soft but audible.  His movements are small, monotonous, predictable, and are as soft as the music he plays.  He spots a beehive, represented by a piece of tabi, an abaca cloth tied in a bundle.  He strums the faglong faster, indicating glee.  His dance steps accordingly become more expansive.  He leaps here, skips there, as he comes closer and closer to the beehive.  Putting down his faglong, he pulls out two pieces of bamboo sticks, and starts a fire by rubbing them vigorously against each other.  He lights up a torch made from dried fiber and leaves, and smokes out the bees from their hive.  He picks up his faglong, hurriedly tears off pieces of the hive and proceeds to sip the honey.  He does this several times.  Then the bees come back and attack him, making him drop the hive.  He runs, slapping his body all over to drive the bees away.  More beestings make him run faster.  Mustering enough courage, he goes back to retrieve the beehive, and runs home, still slapping off the bees and picking the dead ones off his skin.
