Health and Food / Arsenic in rice?

Arsenic in Rice: New Report Finds 'Worrisome Levels'

By SERENA MARSHALL (@SerenaMarsh)
and JIM AVILA (@JimAvilaABC)
Sept. 19, 2012

A major consumer magazine is warning Americans to limit how much rice they eat because of concerns over arsenic and the FDA is investigating the matter.

According to a sobering report released to "Good Morning America" by Consumer Reports magazine this morning, rice eaten just once a day can drive arsenic levels in the human body up 44 percent. Rice eaten twice a day can lead to a 70 percent increase in arsenic.

"So far our results…we actually have about the same number of samples in (and) these two data sets are fairly similar," FDA commissioner Margaret Hamburg -- referring to Consumer Reports product testing results --- said in an interview with ABC News today. But added that "based on the available data and the scientific literature" they see no immediate health threat.

"They seemed like they loved each other," Jacqueline Viens said, and a photo of the couple displayed in the courtroom suggested the same thing. Against the backdrop of a celluloid-worthy sunset, David Viens beamed next to his blond wife.

David Viens and Jacqueline Viens' mother had split up when she was a toddler. He started dating Dawn Viens a short time later, and Jacqueline Viens visited them several times a year, she said. Dawn Viens taught her to write cursive and tie her shoes, Jacqueline Viens testified.

"Did you love Dawn?" Brazil asked.

"I did," Viens said.

But, she added, Dawn Viens was no saint. "She'd wake up in the morning and drink all day long," said Jacqueline Viens, who testified that she and her stepmother had done cocaine together.

On Wednesday, Deputy Dist. Atty. Deborah Brazil's questions hinted at a macabre theory to explain why their efforts failed. One time, Jacqueline Viens testified, her father joked about how to get rid of a body: by cooking it. "He is a chef," she said.

Viens, 22, who also testified at her father's preliminary hearing, was visibly uncomfortable on the stand. Once, during a break in testimony, she stole a glance at her father, then quickly looked away.

Defense attorney Fred McCurry tried to pick apart some of her recollections, particularly of the drunken conversation she and her father allegedly had about his wife's final hours. Viens admitted that she'd also smoked marijuana that night and that her memory was somewhat fuzzy. She also said she'd never seen a fight between her father and Dawn Viens turn physical.

Dawn and David Viens. Jacqueline Viens testified at her father's murder trial Wednesday. (KTLA)

Jacqueline Viens said her father told her that his wife had choked on her own vomit. He also said, through tears, that her body would never be found, his daughter said.

She shared the story with rapt jurors Wednesday, the opening day of her father's murder trial in downtown Los Angeles. He has pleaded not guilty to killing Dawn Viens, 39, who disappeared in October 2009.

In 2011, after he learned that his daughter had spoken to detectives, David Viens leaped off an 80-foot cliff in Rancho Palos Verdes. His injuries were so severe that he appeared in court Wednesday in a wheelchair, wearing a gray suit and glasses and scribbling intently on a notepad.

After his arrest, investigators said, David Viens told them a story similar to the conversation Jacqueline Viens remembered. Authorities tore up the walls and floor of his Lomita restaurant, Thyme Contemporary Cafe, in hopes of finding his wife's remains.

Restaurant owner's daughter testifies in father's murder trial

Jacqueline Viens recounts a drunken talk with David Viens in which he said his wife choked to death on her own vomit after he tied her up and taped her mouth.

September 14, 2012|By Ashley Powers, Los Angeles Times

One night in 2009, during a drunken conversation, Jacqueline Viens said her father told her why her stepmother had recently vanished.

Dawn Viens had been needling him and he just wanted to sleep, Jacqueline Viens recalled her father saying. He'd tried barricading their bedroom door with a dresser to keep his wife out. When that didn't work, David Viens tied her up and taped her mouth, according to his daughter. The next morning, Dawn Viens was dead.

what?  the 2003 oakwood mutiny leader, the very same one who showed cruelty with his shouts on the senate floor to the late gen. angelo reyes, is accusing a respectable and revered senior of being a war freak?  someone without diplomatic experience is implying that he can do the job better?

someone's interested in secretary del rosario's position by 2013.  china is laughing all the way to the spratlys and scarborough shoal.

Trillanes also blamed Del Rosario for the President’s failure to secure a one-on-one meeting with Chinese President Hu Jintao on the sidelines of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Leader’s Summit in Russia last week.

Trillanes claimed that backchanneling efforts were close to working out an informal meeting between the President and Hu until Del Rosario got wind of these talks and insisted on taking over to ensure his presence during the meeting.

The President had declared he wanted a “heart-to-heart meeting” with Hu which Trillanes agreed would have cleared the air since their last meeting in August 2011.

http://globalnation.inquirer.net/
#29830
Trillanes said Del Rosario failed miserably in his attempt to convince US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in May to intervene when Washington announced it would stay neutral in the conflict.

The senator blamed Del Rosario for his failure to get a joint statement from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) to address the West Philippine Sea conflict due to his insistence in using Scarborough Shoal which Cambodia, a Chinese ally, naturally opposed.

Offshore oil deal

Del Rosario has been accused of using the West Philippine Sea conflict as a leverage to cut a favorable deal with state-run China National Offshore Oil Corp (CNOOC) whose top officials were met by Pangilinan in China in May.

“I’m merely implementing the foreign policy in terms of defending what is ours. If I’m being accused of taking a tough stance and at the same time promoting the interest of Forum, it doesn’t equate since I would be taking a soft stance if that were the case,” Del Rosario said.
#29832
The foreign secretary also rejected insinuations that he was against any peaceful settlement with China because he was protecting the interest of his former boss, Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. chairman Manny V. Pangilinan.

Pangilinan controls Forum Energy, the consortium which owns the exploratory rights to  the Recto Bank off Palawan touted to be the country’s largest gas find and part of the territory being claimed by China.
#29833
Just be happy

“I’d rather that Secretary  Del Rosario be just happy with the fact that somebody else did the job he was supposed to do, which is to foster better relations with other nations as a means to promote our country’s interests,” Trillanes said.

Del Rosario was adamant in denying Trillanes’ charges that he had made treasonous acts.

“That  is totally untrue. He should be confronted on the basis of what he said. I don’t want to dispute what the senator is saying but I think what you have said to me thus far is untrue,” Del Rosario said.
#29834
“[The] fear that China will build an outpost there in Scarborough was never true all along. It’s better that we just course this through peaceful means,” the former Navy lieutenant said in the radio interview.

Responding to Trillanes’ statement, Del Rosario said:

“Many of us know for a fact that the good senator is staying very close to the West Philippine Sea issue. He fully knows what is factual and what can be established as a matter of record. The factual record would reflect otherwise.  The DFA (Department of Foreign Affairs) has remained faithful to the President’s mandate to defend what is ours and  to pursue a peaceful resolution on the West Philippine Sea issue, in accordance with the international law.”
#29835
‘War freak’

“He nearly brought us to an armed conflict with a superpower neighbor back in April and now that the back channel talks have enabled us to normalize our relations with China again without even ceding anything, he is still complaining?”  Trillanes said.

He referred to the confrontation between a Philippine warship and  two Chinese surveillance ships over Panatag Shoal off the coast of Zambales.

In a July 20 interview with dzIQ, Trillanes described Del Rosario as a “war freak.”
#29836
The presence of Trillanes, leader of the Magdalo group behind the 2003 Oakwood mutiny,  in Cabinet meetings on China since May has raised not a few eyebrows, including that  of Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile’s.

In a phone interview, Trillanes said, “If Secretary Del Rosario was only close to being effective as a foreign secretary, then there wouldn’t be any need for a back channel in the first place.”

Trillanes has made no secret about his opinion that Del Rosario is unfit to represent the Philippines on the negotiating table with China because of his allegedly rabid opposition to any peaceful settlement with Beijing and his purported desire to bring the United States into the confrontation.

The senator said this was shown by a series of actions Del Rosario had allegedly made that appeared to intensify, rather than ease, the conflict between the two countries.

DFA head bemoans senator’s role in talks

Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV and Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario

A tempest is brewing in the country’s diplomatic front with Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario saying his efforts to resolve the lingering standoff with China over disputed territories in the West Philippine Sea were being torpedoed by a backroom negotiator.

In interviews conducted by the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Senator Antonio Trillanes IV emerged as the negotiator working independently for President Benigno Aquino in Beijing.

“I think that while backchanneling has its purpose, in our case it’s doing more harm than good. It is important that we speak with one voice on this matter,” Del Rosario said in a recent  interview.

no one says he is a muslim but all Obama's actions and words have confirmed that he is a muslim.

balong is saying it, and it looks like he is simply repeating what others are saying, from what he's heard and read.

Quotethis video is a self-confession. no US president has ever been so passionate and fanatic about Islam than Obama. you will never hear bill clinton or george bush quoting Koran. only obama does.

Although it is titled "Obama Admits He Is A Muslim," the president in fact has admitted no such thing. The video edits and twists his actual words, sometimes turning what were denials into false confessions. For example, it edits out the words "I’m a Christian" from one quote and "my Christian faith" from another. It shows him quoting from the Quran, but snips out his quotes from the Bible and the Talmud.

Although the video gives no citations and no dates, we have tracked down the full quotes from the various appearances and provides an interesting case study of malicious editing. (http://www.timesnews.net/article.php?id=9018893)

naturalmente, kay naa ang proof.  naa ra hinoon nimo kun motuo ka o di.  but we know the tricks of dishonest editing and taking statements out of context or changing the slant of stories.  anybody in the communication and information dissemination business (editors, tri-media news reporters and writers, speechwriters, etc.) knows this.

Question and Answer / Re: are you in favor of abortion?
September 18, 2012, 10:12:52 AM
as we may glean, being pro-choice is not as simple as being pro-abortion per se.  anybody with a law background can understand this very well.  (i try to even if i don't remember a single lesson in my law 1 class.)

my point here is to always try to go beyond a simple yes or no, beyond what we read or know or presume to know.  (not that i don't believe we don't do that at all; that's why we have this forum.)  this is my contribution, thus.  it doesn't mean i don't need further enlightenment...

In disallowing many state and federal restrictions on abortion in the United States, Roe v. Wade prompted a national debate that continues today, about issues including whether and to what extent abortion should be legal, who should decide the legality of abortion, what methods the Supreme Court should use in constitutional adjudication, and what the role should be of religious and moral views in the political sphere. Roe v. Wade reshaped national politics, dividing much of the United States into pro-choice and pro-life camps, while activating grassroots movements on both sides. (wikipedia)

a very interesting aspect of the landmark case:

The Court later rejected Roe's trimester framework, while affirming Roe's central holding that a person has a right to abortion until viability.  The Roe decision defined "viable" as being "potentially able to live outside the mother's womb, albeit with artificial aid", adding that viability "is usually placed at about seven months (28 weeks) but may occur earlier, even at 24 weeks." a defining moment on abortion in the u.s. was the supreme court's decision of this landmark case:

Roe vs. Wade

Roe v. Wade, 410 U.S. 113 (1973), is a landmark decision by the United States Supreme Court on the issue of abortion.  Decided simultaneously with a companion case, Doe v. Bolton, the Court ruled that a right to privacy under the due process clause of the 14th Amendment extended to a woman's decision to have an abortion, but that right must be balanced against the state's two legitimate interests in regulating abortions: protecting prenatal life and protecting women's health.  Arguing that these state interests became stronger over the course of a pregnancy, the Court resolved this balancing test by tying state regulation of abortion to the trimester of pregnancy. now let's go to terminologies...

pro-choice, reproductive choice

Pro-choice means you decide. I don't decide for you, you don't decide for me.

I don't believe in letting anyone make important decisions for me - no one can tell me when it's time for me to be a mom or create a life. (http://www.fwhc.org/)

i am not.  no ko, kay ang atong tinan-awan yes and no ra, or black and white ra man.

as for obama, there are nuances.  the answer is not a simple yes or no.  there are too many gray areas between a yes and a no, especially in the case of national leaders and political parties whose decisions involve legislation and state funds.  an example:

Question: What is Barack Obama's position on abortion?

Answer: A pro-choice advocate, Barack Obama has said that if elected he would make preserving a women's right to choose a priority and would oppose any constitutional amendment to overturn Roe v. Wade.

His position on abortion is long-standing and well-documented; he had gone on record as apro-choice politician as far back as 1998, during his time as an Illinois state legislator. However, he has stated throughout his political career that with regard to partial birth abortion a state can restrict late-term abortions. In an April 2008 interview with Fox News, he expressed concern that any such restrictions include a provision to protect the health of the mother.

Though he firmly supports reproductive choice, he has reached out to the pro-life movement. In his words, those who are pro-life "should continue to be able to lawfully object and try to change the laws." (http://womensissues.about.com/)

have we ever thought that this obama bashing could be just a tailender of his being non-white?  is the author of this seemingly (dis)honest article not only a true-blue republican but also someone who happens to be white?

Tunis (Tunisia), 14 September 2012: protesting at the US embassy (not seen in the picture)

other embassies got the ire of protesters, like the german embassy in sudan:

Khartoum (Sudan), 14 September 2012

A still image take from video footage shows demonstrators jumping on the emblem of the German embassy after breaking into the mission's compound in Khartoum September 14, 2012. Sudanese demonstrators broke into the German embassy in Khartoum on Friday, raising an Islamic flag and setting the building on fire in a protest against a film that demeaned the Prophet Muhammed, witnesses said.

In a BBC interview, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair said the film was "wrong and offensive but also laughable as a piece of film-making".

"What is dangerous and wrong is the reaction to it," said Mr Blair, who now serves as a Middle East peace envoy.

Thousands of people were on the streets of Beirut, waving flags and chanting, "America, hear us - don't insult our Prophet".

At least one protester was killed in Pakistan on Monday as violent demonstrations were reported in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and the country's biggest city, Karachi.

It appears that, as predicted, Pakistan has blocked access to Youtube in response to the video, the BBC's Aleem Maqbool reports from Islamabad.

More protests were reported in Srinagar, in Indian-administered Kashmir.

they should.  di lalim ang gisampak nga mga kiha, labi na sa babaye.  too bad they have three children who are now with their grandparents while their own parents are in jail.

Quote from Quezon City regional trial court branch 77 Judge Germano Francisco Legaspi's order:

"The fact that accused Reynold Marzan and accused Annaliza Marzan will be held in different facilities of the Quezon City jail will not prevent their children from visiting them. Any perceived inconvenience the children might suffer in visiting their parents at different detention cells is so insignificant as to warrant the detention of both accused at the NBI." - Source: Inquirer

Analiza’s husband, Reynold, stays in a cell of the QCJ building with other inmates who have no gang affiliations. Jail warden Supt. Joseph Vela also assured Reynold’s safety.

Vela noted that Reynold’s cell is the one nearest to his office, thus, easy to check. “I also instructed the cell leader to make sure that Reynold would not be touched,” the official said.

On Thursday, Judge Germano Francisco Legaspi of Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 77 denied the couple’s bid to be detained at the National Bureau of Investigation headquarters and instead committed them to the city jail.

The Marzans are facing charges of serious illegal detention filed by Baran. Analiza is also charged with two counts of attempted homicide and seven counts of serious physical injuries.

“They cannot have flat irons in their cells. The inmates were probably just taunting the new inmate. But they don’t mean it,” the officer told reporters on Friday.

Some female inmates were heard yelling “handa na mga plantsa namin! (our flat irons are ready!)” shortly before Analiza arrived at the jail at around 3 p.m.

It was an apparent reference to Baran’s allegation that Analiza burned her face with a flat iron, among other abuses at the hand of the Marzans.

Cuaresma said Analiza was “quiet” and mostly kept to herself during her first night at the dormitory in Camp Karingal, Barangay Sikatuna Village, where she shares a cell with other women.

Heated arguments among female inmates happen but they hardly lead to violent physical confrontations, he said.

“We use a therapeutic modality here. Women have no gang affiliations,” he added.

ACCUSED EMPLOYERS SHOW UP: Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Ejercito Estrada and National Bureau of Investigation Director Nonnatus Caesar Rojas listen to the statement of Analiza and Reynold Marzan who appeared Monday afternoon before the NBI. The couple was accused of physical abuse and illegal detention by their kasambahay Bonita Baran, whose case is also the subject of a Senate investigation. Due to the order of arrest issued by the Senate Committee on Labor, Employment and Human Resources Development for their non-appearance before the inquiries, Sen. Estrada requested the Department of Justice and NBI to turn over the couple to the Senate. The committee is set to conduct its last public hearing on the case on Wednesday. The couple through their legal counsel (not in photo) deny the accusation.

Jail execs assure safety of couple in maid abuse case

MANILA, Philippinesâ€"Jail officials on Friday assured the safety of Analiza Marzan and her husband Reynold while in detention on charges that they tortured their former maid Bonita Baran for several years until she went blind.

SJO4 Eduardo Cuaresma of the jail’s female dormitory said the Marzans will be safe in detention, a day after some of the inmates were heard poking fun at the incoming detainee before she arrived at the facility on Thursday.
