Science and Research / Paranormal abilities
January 29, 2013, 08:08:34 PM
Psychokinesis

Psychokinesis is also known as Telekinesis and mind over matter, and it is the ability to move or manipulate objects with the mind. This, in combination with pyrokinesis (item 5) is the ability that Carrie White had in the excellent book and movie adaptation of Stephen King’s Carrie. Of all the items in this list, I would say this is the one that most people would love to have. It would make the television remote defunct and we could basically sit on our butts all day long and do nothing! The position normally taken by scientists and skeptics is that any apparent evidence of this ability is the result of fraud. Many books claim to help you learn this ability and they often contain exercises to help. For example, you may be told to throw a dice repeatedly whilst trying to control the number that comes up. Unfortunately, this creates the psychological state of illusion of control, in which a person comes to believe they are influencing the dice, when in fact, on every roll they have a 1 in 6 chance that their number will come up. One famous person who claims to have this ability is Uri Gellar, who is well known for his spoon bending trick in which he would (apparently) gently rub a spoon just beneath the bowl and the spoon would twist or turn. In fact, skeptics have been able to mimic this trick with great success and no claim to having supernatural abilities.

Vaginal lock is an unconfirmed (even mythical) condition in which a woman's vaginal muscles clamp around the penis during intercourse, so firmly, it causes the male to be 'locked' inside her.

A new Chinese translation of "Finnegans Wake", renowned for its linguistic difficulty in the original, is proving a hit in China -- although one academic called the author James Joyce "mentally ill".

The first-ever mainland Chinese edition of the novel sold out its initial print run of 8,000 copies just three weeks after being launched in December, the official Xinhua news agency said.

Translator Dai Congrong of Shanghai's Fudan University toiled for eight years to render the work about an Irish family into Chinese, imitating the stream of consciousness style and unusual language, it said.

It quoted Wang Weisong of the Shanghai People's Publishing House, which released the book, as saying its success was "totally unexpected".

Both the translator and the publisher declined to comment on Tuesday.

Chinese readers are already familiar with other works of the early 20th century Irish writer. The Chinese edition of "Ulysses", considered his masterpiece, went on sale in 1995.

Literary critic Liu Wei told a recent seminar on "Finnegans Wake" that the book -- the plot of which remains open to interpretation -- deserved respect.

"Modern writers share a common sense of doing interesting textual experiments... among this group of writers, Joyce has the most intensive sense of all," he said, according to an online transcript.

"I think it deserves our respect that Joyce created such a rich text."

But one reader, who gave the name Eudaimonus, said in a microblog posting that the work was not accessible to all.

"Finnegans Wake is a book for book collectors and critics, but not for readers," the posting said.
Others were more emphatic. Xinhua quoted Jiang Xiaoyuan, a professor at Shanghai's Jiaotong University, as saying: "Joyce must have been mentally ill to create such a novel."

TWO children were murdered and eaten by their father as starving rural North Koreans have turned to cannibalism, reports from the internationally isolated state of North Korea claim.

The revelations from Osaka-based press agency Asia Press, which were published in yesterday’s Sunday Times, portray a country so badly struck by famine that instances of cannibalism are rising.

Another report from the same agency tells of how a man exhumed his own grandchild and boiled his corpse.

It is estimated that over 10,000 people have died as a result of a widespread famine that has struck the rural North and South Hwanghae regions particularly hard as droughts have ravaged the pariah state.

Asia Press claim they have recruited a number of citizen journalists working undercover across the provinces.

One South Hwanghae reporter claimed: “In my village in May, a man who killed his own two children and tried to eat them was executed by a firing squad.

“While his wife was away on business he killed his eldest daughter and, because his son saw what he had done, he killed his son as well. When the wife came home, he offered her food, saying: ‘We have meat.’”

The account also tells of how the man’s wife reported her suspicions to the police, who found parts of the childrens’ bodies on the family property.

Another citizen journalist, Gu Gwang-ho, claimed that a man had dug up the remains of his grandchild and ate him.

Jiro Ishimaru, who compiled the 12-page report at Asia Press, said: “Particularly shocking were the numerous testimonies that hit us about cannibalism.”

A North Korean official from the Korean Worker’s Party confirmed one incident of cannibalism, saying: “In a village in Chongdang county, a man who went mad with hunger boiled his own child, ate his flesh and was arrested.”

Defence spending, sanctioned by leader Kim-Jong-un, is thought to have risen drastically in recent months despite widespread hunger that has devastated farming communities.

UN sanctions against North Korea have been extended as the pariah state has drawn widespread condemnation for ongoing missile testing, believed to be evidence of Pyongyang’s nuclear ambitions.

A Japan and South-Korea-backed UN resolution proposed by the US was agreed on Tuesday.

In 1992, victims won a class action suit against the Marcos estate in Hawaii.

Under the Human Rights Victims Reparation and Recognition Act of 2013, the 9,539 victims will be awarded compensation using $246 million that the Philippine government recovered from Marcos' ill-gotten wealth. But all claims will have to evaluated by an independent commission and the amount each will receive will depend of the abuse suffered.

"Finally, over two decades after the fall of the dictatorship, we will have a law that puts the responsibility of human rights abuses square on the shoulder of Marcos and provides justice for all those who suffered under his reign," said Rep. Walden Bello, a member of a congressional committee that drafted and approved the bill.

#29425
Lawmakers in two chambers of the Congress agreed last week on the text of the compensation bill.

Aquino is the son of an assassinated anti-Marcos activist and a mother who led the 1986 "people power" revolt that ousted Marcos and sent him into U.S. exile, where he died three years later without ever facing prosecution for human rights abuses.

Many of Marcos' men reinvented themselves as powerful politicians or businessmen, and not one was successfully prosecuted for any of the crimes allegedly committed during the martial law years.

Two martial law figures, former Defense Secretary Juan Ponce Enrile and the deputy military chief of staff, Fidel Ramos, led a mutiny against Marcos as part of the 1986 revolt. Ramos later served as president from 1992 to 1998, and Enrile is currently the president of the Senate.

Despite cases filed by former political prisoners, "there have been no convictions of perpetrators," Marie Hilao-Enriquez, chairwoman of SELDA, said Monday.

The Marcos family, meanwhile, returned from exile in 1990s and again wields influence. Former first lady Imelda Marcos is a lawmaker, son Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcosis is a senator, and daughter Imee is a provincial governor.

"Governments after Marcos did not move or did not do anything to go after Marcos seriously, so we filed a case in Hawaii," Hilao-Enriquez said.

Ilagan's story is more of a rule than exception among leftist activists of his generation.

"The torture started in the house. We were beaten up, punched and kicked," he said, recalling a police raid on his residence in April 1974 and the beginning of his two-year detention ordeal. He said he vomited blood after being kicked in the thighs and had the soles of his foot burned by an iron.

"The one episode in my torture that I cannot forget was when they ordered me to remove my pants and underwear and they inserted a piece of stick into my penis. 'Oh my God,' I said, this is one torture I could not bear,'" the 61-year-old said in an interview. He said that interrogators wanted him to decode documents and identify people in pictures that were seized from suspected communist activists.

"Compared to others, mine was not the worst torture," he said. "The others were electrocuted and injected with truth serum. ... But the threats continued."

Ilagan's sister, Rizalina, disappeared in 1976 along with nine other activists, many of them students involved in anti-Marcos publications, he said. One of the women arrested by the same government unit that he suspected was involved in his sister's abduction had escaped to recount her rape and torture. Ilagan said he has no doubt that his sister went through the same abuses.

His parents died still hoping his sister would turn up alive, but the family has found no closure, Ilagan said.

LGU Philippines / Martial law victims to be compensated
January 29, 2013, 11:08:25 AM
(philstar.com) | Updated January 29, 2013 - 10:07am

Filipino poet Bonifacio Ilagan, one of hundreds of activists imprisoned during the Martial Law period which was declared by the late strongman Ferdinand Marcos, poses by the granite wall which is engraved with the names of Martial Law victims, including his sister Rizalina Ilagan, at the Heroes Shrine at suburban Quezon city, northeast of Manila, Philippines Monday Jan. 28, 2013.AP/Bullit Marquez

MANILA, Philippines (AP) â€" Almost four decades after he was arrested and tortured and his sister disappeared into a maze of police cells and military houses, playwright Bonifacio Ilagan is finally seeing his suffering officially recognized.

A writer for an underground communist newspaper, Ilagan and thousands like him were rounded up by dictator Ferdinand Marcos' security forces after he placed the Philippines under martial law in 1972. Detentions, beatings, harassment and killings of the regime's opponents continued until Marcos was toppled in 1986.

Even though democracy was restored, it would take another 27 years for the Philippine Congress to vote on a bill awarding compensation and recognition to martial law victims. The bill was ratified Monday and will be sent to Pres. Benigno Aquino III for signing into law, said Sen. Francis Escudero, a key proponent.

"More than the monetary compensation, the bill represents the only formal, written document that martial law violated the human rights of Filipinos and that there were courageous people who fought the dictatorship," said a statement from SELDA, an organization of former political prisoners that campaigned for the passage of the bill.

(/EIM) (BANAT NEWS)

CHARGES were filed Monday against Senator Panfilo Lacson before the Ombudsman and the Senate ethics committee for recently blasting Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago on her opposition to the distribution of additional funds to senators last month.

The criminal and ethics charges stemmed from Lacson’s statement last January 17 when he called Santiago a “crusading crook” for using Senate funds for paying maids, groceries and repairs of her private building.

Because of this, Lozano said Lacson could be liable for violating Republic Act 6713 or Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards.

“The mal-intention of Senator Lacson in his ungentlemanly and unethical conduct is evidently to malign Senator Santiago in order to deter her legal actions against illegal disbursement of public funds. Senator Lacson could have simply pushed through a COA audit in accordance with due process without unnecessarily insulting Senator Santiago,” the complaint read.

Lozano said the complaint was filed in accordance with the Ombudsman law “pursuant to due process for all that hears before it condemns in order to preempt further trial by publicity and mutual recriminations that divert public focus on lawmaking and inquiry in aid of legislation.”

Meantime, Lacson said the COA will conduct an “extensive audit” of Senate funds from 2010 to 2012. He said documents coming from his committee of accounts will be forwarded to COA on Tuesday while data from the previous years until 2007 will be submitted in the next few days.

He said the initial audit will cover 2010 to 2012 since it was during these years when a concurrent resolution of Congress that allowed the issuance of a certification instead of receipts in the liquidation of funds allotted for maintenance and other operating expenses (MOOE) took effect.

Lacson said the COA also rejected the call of Senate Minority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano to conduct a parallel examination on how the chamber’s funds are spent. This will involve the tapping of private auditors.

“I agreed with COA because there was none in the general appropriation that allowed the Senate to contract with private auditing firm,” he said.

Last week, COA Chairperson Grace Tan reiterated that heads of government offices like Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile can realign their respective budgets. (Virgil Lopez/Sunnex) -- http://www.sunstar.com.ph/

One of Taiwan's richest men on Monday launched what has been widely touted as the Asian equivalent of the Nobel Prize, and it is even more lucrative than the famed Swedish award.

Samuel Yin, head of the sprawling Ruentex business empire which has invested heavily in China, said that by donating Tw$3 billion ($101 million) for the Tang Prize he had fulfilled one of his biggest dreams.

"I hope that the prize will encourage more research that is beneficial to the world and humankind, promote Chinese culture and make the world a better place," he said in a statement released by the prize foundation.

The prize is named after China's Tang Dynasty (618-907), which is much admired by Yin, the foundation said.

The dynasty has inspired generation after generation with admiration for its vibrant characteristics of self-confidence and cosmopolitan inclusiveness, which are the qualities that the Tang Prize seeks to promote, it said.

Beginning in 2014 prizes will be awarded every two years in four different categories -- sustainable development, biopharmaceutical science, sinology and the "rule of law" -- to individuals, regardless of nationality.

The winner in each category will receive Tw$50 million ($1.7 million), compared to the eight million Swedish kronor ($1.2 million) that comes with a Nobel Prize.

The Tang Prize will help raise Taiwan's profile in the international scientific community, the statement said.

Nobel Prizes are awarded in the fields of physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature, peace and economics.

he RH law, which is aimed at expanding maternal health programs specifically for the poor, has been signed by President Benigno Aquino III late last year.

Catholic Church leaders who have consistently opposed the measure have meanwhile vowed to continue the fight through other venues.

HRW meanwhile urged the government to ensure that "archaic provisions" in laws will not be used to target RH supporters.

"This case shows the potential for misuse and malicious prosecution and hence the need for urgent reform to this provision of the code," the watchdog said.

The said provision in the laws lists penalties for "anyone who, in a place devoted to religious worship or during the celebration of any religious ceremony shall perform acts notoriously offensive to the feelings of the faithful."

Celdran, a reproductive health (RH) advocate and tourist guide interrupted a Manila Cathedral mass on Sept. 30, 2010, dressed as Jose Rizal and carrying a placard that says "Damaso."

The protest is a reference to "Padre Damaso", the antagonist priest in Rizal's Noli Me Tangere.

He was protesting Philippine Church leaders' alleged meddling on government, particularly over the reproductive health bill.

"All told, the positive declaration of the witnesses for the prosecution and the circumstances surrounding the incident are sufficient to satisfy the quantum of evidence needed for a criminal conviction," the court said.

International watchdog Human Rights Watch, meanwhile, expressed alarm over the court ruling, calling for its reversal.

"This is a setback for free speech in the Philippines, which prides itself on being a democracy," HRW said in a statement.

"Nobody should be jailed for voicing out an opinion or position, especially on a subject that concerns the lives of millions of Filipino women and mothers," it added.

Remember the guy who donned a topcoat and hat a la Jose Rizal and held a placard that said "Damaso" during a Manila Cathedral mass?

More than two years after his protest against an allegedly meddlesome Catholic church, a criminal court found popular activist Carlos Celdran guilty of "offending religious feelings."

The Metropolitan Trial Court Branch 4 sentenced Celdran to suffer imprisonment for an indeterminate period of two months and 21 days as minimum to one year, one month and 11 days.

"[P]remises considered, accused Carlos Celdran y Pamintuan is found 'guilty' beyond reasonable doubt for the crime of offending religious feelings under Article 133 of the Revised Renal Code," the court decision dated Dec. 14 said.

History / Scaphism
January 28, 2013, 11:42:28 AM
Scaphism, also known as the boats, was an ancient Persian method of execution designed to inflict torturous death. The name comes from the Greek word skaphe, meaning "anything scooped (or hollowed) out".

The intended victim was stripped naked and then firmly fastened within the interior spaces of two narrow rowing boats (or hollowed-out tree trunks) joined together one on top of the other with the head, hands and feet protruding. The condemned was forced to ingest milk and honey to the point of developing severe bowel movement and diarrhoea, and more honey would be rubbed on his body to attract insects to the exposed appendages. He would then be left to float on a stagnant pond or be exposed to the sun. The defenceless individual's faeces accumulated within the container, attracting more insects, which would eat and breed within his exposed flesh, whichâ€"pursuant to interruption of the blood supply by burrowing insectsâ€"became increasingly gangrenous. The feeding would be repeated each day in some cases to prolong the torture, so that dehydration or starvation did not kill him. Death, when it eventually occurred, was probably due to a combination of dehydration, starvation and septic shock. Delirium would typically set in after a few days.

In other recorded versions, the insects did not eat the person; biting and stinging insects such as wasps, which were attracted by honey on the body, acted as the torture.

Death by scaphism was incredibly painful, humiliating and protracted. Plutarch writes in his biography of Artaxerxes II that Mithridates, sentenced to die in this manner in 401 BC for boasting about killing Cyrus the Younger, survived 17 days before dying.--Wiki

Quotable Quotes / Re: Marcos' Words
January 27, 2013, 09:03:32 PM
God is, quite often, a convenient friend to great leaders. His guidance is often sought by them.

Here's President McKinley:

"When I next realized that the Philippines had dropped into our laps I confess I did not know what to do with them. I sought counsel from all sidesâ€"Democrats as well as Republicansâ€"but got little help. I thought first we would take only Manila; then Luzon; then other islands perhaps also. I walked the floor of the White House night after night until midnight; and I am not ashamed to tell you, gentlemen, that I went down on my knees and prayed Almighty God for light and guidance more than one night. And one night late it came to me this wayâ€"I don’t know how it was, but it came: (1) That we could not give them back to Spainâ€"that would be cowardly and dishonorable; (2) that we could not turn them over to France and Germanyâ€"our commercial rivals in the Orientâ€"that would be bad business and discreditable; (3) that we could not leave them to themselvesâ€"they were unfit for self-governmentâ€"and they would soon have anarchy and misrule over there worse than Spain’s was; and (4) that there was nothing left for us to do but to take them all, and to educate the Filipinos, and uplift and civilize and Christianize them, and by God’s grace do the very best we could by them, as our fellow-men for whom Christ also died. And then I went to bed, and went to sleep, and slept soundly, and the next morning I sent for the chief engineer of the War Department (our map-maker), and I told him to put the Philippines on the map of the United States (pointing to a large map on the wall of his office), and there they are, and there they will stay while I am President!"
