case 2:  you draw like a pre-schooler, were the words dropped by a science teacher to our little girl who's now in grade 5.  confound it.  it's a reading class, not an art class, yet she requires so many drawings... anyway, siya may maestra, hala na lang.

the effect on our little girl was something else.  nakaestorya ang arts teacher nga nahibung siya nganong way gi-pass bisag usa nga artwork ang bata nga hapit na mahuman ang semester.  this, bisag busy kuno kaayo ang bata ug kurikuri during art class.  gitapigan lang diay niya ang iyang trabaho, believing that they're something she should be ashamed of, kay mora lagig drinowingan ug pre-schooler, according to that idiot of a reading teacher.

solution: to be fair, we suggested that the arts teacher give her a failing mark so she'll realize that her duty is to pass her work and not to get conscious about it.  there's still time to make up for the failing mark anyway.  whatever the art teacher's reasons were, he gave her high passing marks instead.  he must have a better grasp of child psychology.  now our little girl submits the required art projects, on time.

case 1:  grade 3 pa siya ato.  giingnan sa maestra nga di kuno siya kahibawo mosuwat.  maestra ka, angay ba god na isulti ug pupil?  you're supposed to teach and encourage learners, not make them feel stupid.  i'll emphasize here that at that time the only language our little girl can speak was english; she had a few words of cebuano though she couldn't string them into a sentence, and her tagalog was zero.

heartbroken ko ani kay ang damgo intawon sa among little girl kay mapareha kuno siya sa iyang parents who are both writers, at least in her eyes.  in fact, she kept a pen and notebook under her pillow where she wrote her thoughts down before going to sleep.  it's a good sign for someone who wants to be a writer.  after the teacher's discouraging words, the pen and notebook were gone.

solution: we didn't make a fuss.  but since a repeat was out of the question (i'll raise hell kun otrohon ug insulto), we just see to it that our little girl will never be under the same teacher again in that subject area.

unsa kaha ning eskwelahana nga pribado man kaha?

it's not only physical punishment and the embarrassment that a child sustains among his classmates that could mark him for life.

nagbantay man lang ko unsay development aning among little girl kay kaduha na baya siya nalabtikan ug hait nga sinultihan ug maestra.  torn pod hinoon ko kay tahakunon baya ning thin line between being overprotective and letting a child tackle the world and all its harshness so he can strengthen himself.  makakat-on ug barog sa iyang kaugalingon imbis magsalig nga labanan.

Today, there are roads and cars in Toraja and raising the dead is no longer needed to transport the body. Sometimes the villagers like to prove that they still know how to raise the dead so they use their rituals on dead animals.

Take one more look at the picture. Doesn’t it look like the “dead lady” is looking at something in the bottom right corner?

Maybe she is walking towards her coffin.

Funeral Rituals of Toraja

According to one, in the ancient past, it was believed that a dead man must be buried in the village that he was born in, and not at the place of his death. Since villages then were far apart, it was difficult for family members to carry the corpse from one village to another. Certain people would do rituals that made the dead man walk, and the dead man would be able to walk back to the village where he was born.

Imagine walking to the grocery store, and seeing a dead person making his way back to his place of origin?

Supposedly if they were interrupted or approached, they would just collapse. Pretty creepy.

The second theory about the Toraja zombies is just as scary.

The villagers believe death is a long process, and that it takes many years for the deceased to work their way through it, finally reaching afterlife. So long and costly arrangements need to be made for the funeral, allowing the dead to make the transition the right way. A problem arises when a family cannot afford all of the arrangements. So what they do is  make use of a temporary coffin, until they gather enough money and collect all of the funds. Once the permanent coffin has been made ready, the dead are actually raised and made to walk into it.

After seeing this picture of a “walking dead person,” I asked myself multiple questions:

    Is this lady really dead?
Is this lady just terminally ill and about to die?
Is this lady 100+ years old?
What makes these villagers want to raise a dead person?
How did this “walking dead” concept evolve?

So I did some research, and I was able to answer a couple of these questions.

To start, we will never know if this lady is dead in this picture or not. The only way to better understand this is to use common sense and think scientifically. Simply put, a person cannot function anymore when all of the organs of the body stop working. A dead person's heart is stopped which means there is no blood pumping through the body, and no blood getting to the brain.

So if she is really standing up, walking on her own, and she really has risen from the dead, the only possible conclusion is some kind of freaky ritual that actually works.

My first answer to this picture was that she was very ill or very old, but who am I to say that? This ritual has been going on forever in their culture.

During my research, I found some interesting information about the origins of this strange behavior. There seems to be two separate theories on how the walking dead came to be.

Real Life Zombies: The Walking Dead of Toraja

March 15, 2012
by breakinbadd

“Real zombies? no way..”

That is exactly what I said when I first was introduced to the walking dead people of Toraja, Indonesia.

Certain Villagers in Toraja have the ability to raise the dead with a specific ritual that they use during the funeral process. I know this sounds crazy, but it has been a part of their culture for thousands of years.

now look at this picture below.  can one really categorically say that the woman is alive?  or dead?

unless the whole thing is a set-up and the make-up artist for the subject woman is a professional, or the picture went through photoshop, we'll be hard put to answer one way or the other.

please go through the following accompanying blog of this picture, in the next post.

so what is a zombie?  (the similarity to my personal text is purely coincidental.)  good old wikipedia says that in haitian culture, a zombie is an animated corpse resurrected back to life by mystical means, such as witchcraft.

to the west and the rest of the (modern) world, zombies are "...fictional undead creatures regularly encountered in horror and fantasy themed works. They are typically depicted as mindless, reanimated corpses with a hunger for human flesh, and particularly for human brains in some depictions". (wikipedia)

also from wikipedia: "Although they share their name and some superficial similarities with the zombie from Haitian Vodun, their links to such folklore are unclear and many consider George A. Romero's seminal film The Night of the Living Dead to be the progenitor of these creatures."

hinoon, bisan unsa nga wa sa atong experience, wa sa atong namat-an nga pagtuo (sama sa atong religion), ug di ma-explain sa science, lisod gyod tuod tuhoan.

but let's try to set these aside for awhile, as in considering what happened to galileo when these three (experience, religion and science) sort of mixed unfavorably for him and how he was proven right centuries later.

Sotto twits fellow senators

Sotto also had words for fellow senators who are backtracking from their support of the cybercrime law.

"Kami, pag may pumasang batas, walang kamalay-malay, ganoon talaga iyon," he said. "Pasensiya ka nakalagay ang pangalan mo doon, nakamarka ka."

The senators who approved the anti-cybercrime law proposal on third and final reading were Sotto, Loren Legarda, Francis Escudero, Gregorio Honasan II, Aquilino "Koko" Pimentel III, Pia Cayetano, Bong Revilla Jr., Jinggoy Ejercito-Estrada, Panfilo Lacson, Lito Lapid, Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos, Ralph Recto, and Manny Villar.

Only Senator Teofisto "TG" Guingona III voted no.

Senators Escudero and Alan Peter Cayetano have vowed to file Senate bills amending the legislation signed into law September 12 by President Benigno Aquino.

"January 24, pinasa iyan. Natapos iyan sa Senado. Kasama na doon sa committee amendments, sinama na lahat ng crimes, punishable by the Revised Penal Code," he said.

He said he doesn't know what happened to the proposed legislation authored and sponsored by Senator Edgardo Angara when it reached the bicameral committee.

"Huwag nila akong atakehin. Akala nila may mga na-insert pa, wala, hindi totoo," Sotto said. "hindi ko nga tinayo sa individual amendments eh. May nagsasabi, ako raw sa individual amendments, hindi, intensiyon ko iyon nung last quarter."

Sotto, in his dzMM interview, remained firm in denying that he was not behind the libel clause.

"Ang plano ko talaga, noong bandang January, period of amendment, isama itong libel. Noong pinag-usapan na namin iyon, ang sabi ng committee, ang committee na ang bahala sa period of amendments," he said.

The Senate committee report did not have the libel clause.

"Kalokohan iyon," he said. "Iyung committee (amendments), nasa record ng Senado iyon."

"Mayroon pa silang sinabi, nasa journal daw ng Senate. Marunong pa sila sa journal ng Senate. Sa akin dumadaan iyung journal ng Senate. Ako ang Senate majority leader," Sotto said.

Pages 879 to 880 of the January 24, 2012 Senate journal on the website state:

    "SOTTO  AMENDMENT

Preliminarily,  Senator  Sotto  stated  that  there are  numerous  abuses  in  technology,  particularly the  video  and  photo  uploading  and  unnecessary write-ups  and  comments  in  social  networking systems.

Why Sotto must read the Jan. 24 Senate journal on cybercrime law

Senator Tito Sotto denies crafting the e-libel rider in the new anti-cybercrime law despite Senate records stating he inserted the clause near the end of the proposed legislation's amendment period.  ABS-CBNnews.com file photo

MANILA, Philippines - Senator Vicente "Tito" Sotto III has a problem with the January 24, 2012 Senate journal that indicates who inserted the libel rider in the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2011.

Sotto insisted on Monday that he did not insert the libel rider in Republic Act No. 10175 that may send an erring Internet user to prison for up to 17 years.

Sotto, in an interview on radio dzMM, denied Senate records uploaded on the upper House's website that showed he inserted the libel clause in the period of amendments.

i presume it's not a cruel reminder, hahaha!  one thing with cat owners is that they're almost like parents with babies.  these owners show pictures of their babies or cats around when to the rest of the world all babies look the same and all cats look the same.

i'm watching over our sick kitten.  i think she has a sprained left front paw, which is obvious when she walks.  she's been sleeping the whole day and hadn't eaten at all; unusual for a terribly active kitten.  if she doesn't improve by tomorrow, to the vet we go.

Born to soon

In an all-white suit, Chavezâ€"who identified himself as a broadcast journalist and a friend of Marcos loyalist lawyer Oliver Lozanoâ€"declared he was running under the Kilusang Bagong Liwanag (formerly Kilusang Bagong Lipunan) party.

It was his fourth attempt to run for a national post, Chavez said.

Claiming to be a former Marine, Lagata came in a barong and sported  red curly hair. He publicly proposed to GMA TV reporter Tina Panganiban-Perez.

“If only I hadn’t been born too soon, I would have been ready to marry you in all the churches,” the 68-year-old Lagata told her in Filipino, adding in a half-whisper: “I also kiss sweetly.”

Bernardino, a 47-year-old civil engineer from Caloocan City, said he was running as an independent candidate but quickly admitted that, as in the past election, he would most likely be disqualified by the Comelec.

“This is anticlimactic … I just wish to share with you my advocacy,” he said.

Bernardino’s “advocacy” included the “refashioning or reorientation” of the popular numbers game lotto, the construction of housing projects for the poor, libraries in all city and provincial halls, elevated Light Rail Transits in the cities of Davao and Cebu and railroad tracks from Laguna province to Bulacan province, and the publication of a Filipino encyclopedia.

Parasites not needed

In a black suit and bow tie, with a name plate that read “Sen. Magtira” pinned to his left chest, one 52-year-old aspirant claimed to be a rock musician. He said he would run on a platform that would push for a constituent assembly “through economics, arts and culture.”

In his COC, “Sen. Magtira” indicated that Kris Aquinoâ€"the President’s sisterâ€"was his spouse and that he was officially nominated by former first lady Imelda Marcos and Manila Rep. Carlo Lopez.

Magtira, who also filed his candidacy in past senatorial and presidential elections, left a piece of advice for voters: “The Filipinos must elect officials in the Senate who are honest to the nation, especially to the poor. Those who must be elected to the Senate should be sensible, not a parasite who wears clothes amassed by ill-gotten wealth.”

He gave away T-shirts and showered a group of Comelec employees and reporters with P1 coins on his way out of the building.

Class of nobles

Claiming to be the “heir” to King Luisong Tagean, a descendant of Raja Soliman and supposedly the rightful owner of the entire Philippine archipelago, this particular senatorial aspirant said the disputed Spratly Islands and Panatag (Scarborough) Shoal were part of the archipelago owned by the Tagean clan.

But he said he was not going to talk with rival claimant China to settle the territorial dispute.

“Let the government do something for me… I belong to the Maharlikans,” he said, referring to the class of nobles during pre-Hispanic times.

Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez said the poll body was expecting, as in previous election seasons, applicants like them in the next four days.

They also used different tacks in an apparent attempt to be unforgettable. One gave away free shirts and showered onlookers with coins before he left, another proposed marriage to a television reporter. Others distributed press releases enumerating their platforms of government.

They gave their names as Daniel Magtira, Aeric Bernardino, Anicio Escosura, Mel Chavez and Melito Lagata. Most of them, it turned out, were “regulars” at the Comelec around this time of the election season.

A first-time applicant, Salam Lacan Luisong Tagean, from Camarines Sur, said with conviction that he decided to run for senator to give land to the landless. He came wearing a vest and a cap.

PH ‘owner,’ rocker, kisser seek Senate seats

By Jocelyn R. Uy

One was an “heir” to the supposed rightful owner of the Philippine archipelago. Another claimed to be a rock ‘n’ roll musician. A third said he was a hot kisser.

They were among the first senatorial aspirants to file their certificates of candidacy (COCs) at the Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Monday.

Coming in pressed suits and bow ties, the early birds took turns filing their certificates as soon as the Comelec offices in Intramuros, Manila opened their doors at 8 a.m., the start of a five-day period for filing COCs for the May 2013 elections.

Man dead in karaoke fight

By Mike Frialde
October 02, 2012

MANILA, Philippines - For allegedly refusing to pass the karaoke microphone, a 32-year-old man was stabbed dead inside a bar in Las Piñas City on Monday night.

Southern Police District director, Chief Supt. Benito Estipona, identified the victim as Edwin Miranda of 772 Sultana St., Barangay Manuyo.

The suspect, Angel Julio, 60, of 802 San Jose St., Barangay Manuyo, was arrested shortly after the incident by barangay tanods led by PO1 Rodel Buenaventura Daniel Fajardo.

Initial investigation showed that Julio and Miranda went to the Padrino’s Karaoke Bar and Restaurant along Padre Diego St., in Barangay Manuyo to unwind at about 11:30 p.m.

Already drunk, police said Julio asked Miranda to hand over the karaoke’s microphone.

Police said Miranda refused, causing Julio to shout and curse at the victim. A fight then ensued which was broken up by the waiters. Police said Julio then hurriedly left the bar.

Police said Julio then returned to the bar armed with a knife. Without warning, he lunged at Miranda and stabbed him repeatedly at the body.

Miranda was rushed to the Las Piñas District Hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

Julio meanwhile is now detained at the Las Piñas City Police headquarters as a charge for murder is being readied against him.

...This developed as De Lima admitted yesterday that she opposed certain provisions in RA 10175 even before it was enacted last month.

De Lima bared this even as the DOJ is ready to implement the controversial new law starting tomorrow.

She said she had issued an opinion raising reservations particularly on provisions that impose higher penalty for libel and give the DOJ authority to order searches and seizures similar to that of a judge.

“I know there are objectionable portions and may I state for the record that those provisions did not come from us - the libel provision and the provision that gives us the take-down power. In fact, our position papers would show that we have actually raised questions on that,” she told reporters in an ambush interview.

She said she specifically recommended the deletion of cyber defamation, cyber threats and Internet libel. â€" with Paolo Romero

DOJ puts up new cyber law office

By Edu Punay
The Philippine Star
October 02, 2012

MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Justice (DOJ) will create a new office, to be manned by 100 state prosecutors trained in cyber forensics, to prosecute cybercrimes identified in the newly signed Republic Act 10175 or Cybercrime Prevention Act.

Justice Secretary Leila de Lima said yesterday that her office would also hold constant dialogue with key stakeholders to address issues and concerns on the implementation of the law, starting with a multisectoral forum on Oct. 9 at the DOJ.

She gave the statement after two more groups filed yesterday before the Supreme Court the sixth and seventh petitions seeking to stop implementation of certain provisions of RA 10175.

The petitioners, composed of a group of lawmakers, bloggers, members of academe and students, questioned the constitutionality of sections 4, 5 and 6 of the law.

No TRO on Cyber Crime Law

By Camille Diola and Dennis Carcamo
The Philippine Star
October 02, 2012

MANILA, Philippines - The Supreme Court on Tuesday did not issue a temporary restraining order against the newly-passed Cyber Crime Law, paving the way for its full implementation on Wednesday.

Instead, the SC will decide Tuesday next week whether or not to issue a temporary restraining order (TRO) against the controversial measure. The petitions against the law were included in the en banc agenda of the SC.

A member of the court, who requested anonymity, said the magistrates of the High Court have yet to thoroughly study all the petitions opposing the implementation of the measure.

During the en banc session, the SC justices said they will rule on the seven petitions now consolidated against the Cybercrime Act next week, the source said.

In the Mursi tribe, the tradition of lip piercing is usually undertaken a year before the marriage ceremony. To begin with the bride to be's mother will pierce the hole with a knife and then a wooden peg is placed in the hole. Once this has healed, the peg is removed and the first plate is inserted.

lauradutoit.hubpages.com

As you can see, there are many tribes around the world who have lip piercing. In some parts of the Amazon, it is only the men who have their lips pierced and a plate inserted. The Suya tribesmen pierce their lower lip purely to make themselves more attractive. The women go for a more startling look with two plates.

The lip plate or plug is inserted into the top lip or lower lip through a hole that has been pierced. Over time, the plate is removed and another one is inserted to make the hole bigger. This is said to be most painful to the women, and each time it is stretched it causes it to bleed. The actually term is described as labret, which means pierced lip ornaments.

The plate or plug is made out of clay or wood. It all depends on what region the tribe is from whether the women place the plate in the top lip or lower lip. It has been said that it is a form of status, the bigger the plate the more important the woman. The disturbing thing about it is that when the plate is put in the lower lip, the women has her two lower front teeth knocked out to accommodate the plate. Sometimes there are up to four teeth taken out.

African Mursi Tribe

The Mursi tribe are an ethnic people who live in Southwestern Ethiopia. The area is close to the Sudan border. According to the national census of 2007, there are 7,500 Mursi. The area in which they live is surrounded by mountains and has one major river named the Omo. It is one of the most isolated regions in the whole country.

Their language is part of the Nilo Saharan, and is simply called the Mursi language.

Once again we see that the body modification art is commonly used only by the women of the tribe. In the case of the Mursi women, it was believed to stop slave traders taking the women. But there are probably many other reasons too that have been lost over time.

In the Apatani tribe women wear nose plugs. This is an ancient art form of their tradition, but these days you will only see the elder women of the tribe wearing them as the art has died out ever since the 1970s.

The story goes that the women were said to be the most beautiful in all the land, and were constantly being bombarded by other tribes trying to steal their women. So they came up with the idea of the Nose Plugs to try and make themselves unattractive.

kmle.co.kr

There is definitely a pattern between tribes of the world with this in mind. Along with the Apatani, the Long Neck women above also said this was part of the reason why they added the neck rings. The nose rings are known as yaping hurlo and are made from local wood, though when researching this I couldn't find the exact method or wood that they used. Its possible that some of the nose plugs were made from bamboo. The women also tattoo their faces to complete the art.

The Apatani People

The Apatani are a tribe of people who live in the Ziro Valley which is in the lower Subansiri or district of Arunachal Pradesh in India. There are over 26,000 of the tribe living in the valley and across the country. Their language is Tibetan and is called Sino Tibetan also known as Tani. They have no written history, so their stories and lifestyle is passed down from generation to generation.

Body modification is an ancient art form, and many tribes around the world have practised these strange and sometimes bizarre form of body art for centuries. To us they look strange and unfamiliar, but to them its part of their tradition and holds many parts of their tribe together, as time passes and the world begins to intrude on their lives.

The reason for wearing the rings is a bit of a mystery but when asked, the women told that it was because they didn't want Tigers biting them! Others have said that it makes them look attractive for their husbands.

http://www.thaimedicalnews.com/

The down side of wearing the rings is that over time their neck muscles become weak, and this is used as a form of punishment against adultery. Once the rings are taken off, the woman's neck is so weak she has to lie down for the rest of her life. Not surprising then that the divorce rate and adultery is very low in the tribe.

Other members of the Karen tribes wear large earrings that are made to make the ears look big and heavy. But its the neck rings that make the Padaung Tribe famous.

Not all of the Karen tribe use neck rings as part of their tradition.

The neck rings are made from brass and are added each year the child grows. An adult woman can wear as many as 25 rings around her neck.

There is a myth about how long the neck will stretch as the rings are applied. In fact the neck itself does not stretch, its just a visual illusion.

i won't mind having this kun pensioner lang unta ko with enough funds to maintain this.  healthy animals mean healthy humans.  and that's expensive.  i should know.  with around 20 cats (and counting) and 4 dogs ourselves, i know how much we spend for each one per year.  wa na lay labot ang visiting cats.  (those cats who come to our place for food and water as a matter of habit.)  wa na lang poy labot ang airplane trips and health certificates nila.

is it crazy?  you bet.  but try asking those cats and dogs. ;D
