Arum has been planning to put the fight on Sept. 14 â€" Mexican Independence Day weekend. However, that could be a problem because Floyd Mayweather Jr., the world's biggest-selling pay-per-view fighter, is also planning to fight that day.

The pay-per-view divisions of either HBO or Showtime would likely side with Mayweather given he has performed better on pay-per-view recently and because they wouldn't have to send their crews halfway around the world.

When Pacquiao-Marquez 5 is held is not as significant as where. Arum is working with representatives of both fighters, though he told Yahoo! Sports that because of the salaries involved, "it would have to mean a casino market."

That means the bout would either be held in Las Vegas, Macau or Singapore, the only casino markets that could generate the kind of money necessary. Atlantic City, N.J., doesn't have a venue nearly big enough.

If the fight ends up outside the U.S., the big loser would be Arum, who conceded he'd make about $10 million less than he would if it were once again held at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas.

"We feel the real growth potential for Manny and his brand and fan base and all that is going to be in Asia," he said. "He is so popular in the States, there is not much more we can do there.

"So here is what we are looking at: We want somewhere that is appealing from a financial perspective, with low taxes that allow him to keep a lot of his income. Also, we are looking for him to take something back to the fans who have supported him. He is a global fighter with global popularity, but he has only fought in one country for so long."

Koncz has visited Singapore, where there are two major casinos and a convention center that has previously hosted international badminton and basketball events, to discuss the viability of Pacquiao fighting there. He said he was "greatly encouraged" by his meetings there.
#29005
"We were talking only this morning about where and when and against who he would fight next," Koncz told Yahoo! Sports. "One thing we agreed on is that the taxes make Vegas a no-go. You're a fighter up there risking your life in the ring, so you have to maximize what you are going to get out of it.

"I know, Manny knows, that he only has a certain number of fights left, maybe one, maybe three. We don't know. So that means the priorities change a little bit at this point."

Koncz said that after fighting exclusively in the U.S. since 2007, Pacquiao may have tapped out his popularity in America and could benefit from expanding into new markets.
#29006
Pacquiao's last four bouts and 10 of his last 12 have been in Las Vegas, but Koncz insisted the Filipino congressman is unhappy with the tax increase and is not eager to return.

Koncz spent the end of December and all of January traveling with Pacquiao in the Philippines and vacationing with him in Israel. He said they had begun discussing fight plans in earnest.

Macau's financial power is extraordinary, and Macau has emerged as the world's most lucrative gambling hotspot, with revenues that far outstrip those of Las Vegas. Nevada casino mogul Steve Wynn claimed recently that he now considers his chain of resorts as "a Chinese company, not an American company," as the bulk of its income is derived from its two Macau properties.

Koncz, though, said Singapore is a viable alternative to Las Vegas, in addition to Macau.
#29007
But Arum and Koncz say Pacquiao is balking at the additional money he'd lose to the government if the fight were held in Las Vegas. Arum said Pacquiao would not have to pay taxes if the fight takes place in casinos in either Singapore or Macau.

"Manny can go back to Las Vegas and make $25 million, but how much of it will he end up with â€" $15 million?" Arum said. "If he goes to Macau, perhaps his purse will only be $20 million, but he will get to keep it all, so he will be better off."

While avoiding a huge tax bill would be a benefit to Pacquiao, it would hurt Arum in terms of pay-per-view sales. Arum said a detailed review indicates that a pay-per-view bout emanating outside of North America would do about 50 percent fewer sales.

Manny Pacquiao's chief adviser insisted Monday that the Filipino superstar's preference is for his next bout â€" a fifth fight against Juan Manuel Marquez â€" to take place away from Las Vegas, with the off-shore Chinese gambling resort of Macau emerging as the "favorite."

Michael Koncz told Yahoo! Sports that the 39.6 percent tax rate Pacquiao would face if he were to fight again in the U.S. makes a fall bout in Las Vegas "a no go."
Promoter Bob Arum is hopeful of arranging a fifth match between Pacquiao and Marquez in the fall, potentially on Sept. 14. Arum's preference is for the fight to be at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, which is his company's home base.

“We took The Prophecy of the Popes, we took what was happening in Italian media, and we determined, based on a great deal of information, that Pope Benedict would likely step down, citing health reasons, in 2012 or 2013,” he said.

Here's a more sober analysis from The Philadelphia Inquirer:

Although Benedict likely subscribes to the Catholic notion that the Holy Spirit guides the selection of a pope, his decision to step down was surely guided by his experience of watching his predecessor, John Paul II, decline over a half-decade due to Parkinson's disease.

In his final years, John Paul was obliged to rest for many hours a day, used a wheelchair and became increasingly difficult to understand because of his slurred speech.

As John Paul's health deteriorated, Ratzinger and the rest of the Curia, or Vatican leadership, also watched as high-level decision-making normally reserved for a pope fell increasingly to John Paul's advisers, especially his confidant and secretary, Archbishop Stanislaw Dziwisz.

Those years spent watching his good friend decline, and a "de facto" pontiff move in to fill the vacuum, may have prompted Benedict to contemplate the need for a transfer of leadership in an era when medicine could prolong the life of an incapacitated pope.

That very topic was once so fraught that the Vatican would rarely acknowledge when a pope was ill. "The pope isn't sick until he's dead," went a long-standing joke.

But with Monday's announcement, Benedict appeared to put an end to that joke and the anxiety surrounding it. The famously traditionalist pontiff has created a new tradition - papal resignation - that promises to serve the Catholic Church well in the centuries ahead.

it looks like gay rights and marriage are easier to take than to let go of the right to bear arms.  i shudder at this comparison (with apologies, this one) but what i mean here is that with a fast-paced trajectory to modernity and liberal-mindedness like the legality of gay marriage, the u.s.'s love affair with guns hadn't outgrown wyatt earp, much less that pilgrim who carried the turkey down the boat.

A lopsided morality is one of the many prerogatives of the powerful.

The Philippine flying lemur (Cynocephalus volans) is one of two species of flying lemurs, the only two living species in the order Dermoptera.[3] Additionally, it is the only member of the genus Cynocephalus.

Although called a flying lemur, it cannot fly and is not a lemur. The Philippine flying lemur is one of the two living species of the order Dermoptera. The other species is the Sunda flying lemur.

An average Philippine flying lemur weighs about 1 to 1.7 kg (2.2 to 3.7 lb) and is 14 to 17 in (36 to 43 cm) long. It has a wide head, small ears, and big eyes. Its clawed feet are large and webbed for fast climbing and for gliding. Its 12-in (36-cm) tail is connected to the forelimbs via a patagium. This membrane helps it glide distances of 100 m or more, useful for finding food and escaping predators, such as the Philippine eagle.[4] It is nocturnal and stays in hollow trees or clings on dense foliage during daytime. The female Philippine flying lemur usually gives birth to one young after a two-month gestation period. The young is helpless and attaches itself to its mother's belly, in a pouch fashioned from the mother's skin flaps.

The Philippine flying lemur is endemic to the Philippines. Its population is concentrated in the Mindanao region and Bohol. --Wiki

The Guardian's Stephen Bates analyzes the "sense of drift and disappointment" attached to Benedict's papacy:

"I'd say it has been disastrous," said Michael Walsh, the British historian of the papacy, on Monday night.

The problems facing the church remain: the child abuse scandal has not been resolved, nor has the church's loss of authority and self-confidence been reversed. In the west, and Europe was clearly the focus of Benedict's interest, the decline in church attendances and the lack of vocations to staff the future priesthood, the sheer disintegration in its status and esteem, have been neither confronted nor resolved. Catherine Pepinster, editor of the Catholic weekly the Tablet, said: "It has been a very troubled time. We have not got a Catholic church at ease with itself."

Indeed, the Vatican has seemed to be pressing hard in the opposite direction: into a cul-de-sac of conservative authoritarianism which neither inspires nor revives the mass of cradle Catholics, who are still deserting the church even in heartlands such as Spain and Ireland. Fifty years ago, governments in Catholic countries would tremble at the Vatican's displeasure; now they just wag their fingers back and press on with their plans for gay marriages or easier abortion. There is no comeback when the church has squandered its moral authority across the world over child abuse.

This one definitely belongs in the number 1 spot. What do you normally do when you have a dispute? Do you talk things over? Go to court? Well, in New Guinea, to settle disputes, the people rely on biritululo. Biritululo is the act of comparing yams (and I am hoping that is meant in the literal sense) to settle a dispute. The closest we come to that in English is too rude to post on listverse, but it is also involves comparing something similarly shaped (but not sized unless you are extraordinarily lucky).

Black Pope: Cardinal Peter Turkson Could Make History and Become the First
Michael McCutcheon in World, Afghanistan 13 hours ago

Cardinal Peter Turkson is one of the names being floated as a possible successor to Pope Benedict XVI as the next head of the Catholic Church. He would be the first black Pope in the history of the Church and is Ghanaian-born.

It would be a historic moment. The Church is continuing to grow quickly in Africa and choosing a non-European would speak volumes about the Church's plans for growth and be a nod to its emerging members.

Turkson was named as a possible successor to the previous Pope, John Paul, but passed over for Benedict. The Pope is chosen by fellow Cardinals in a process called Conclave that is closed to outsiders.

He will also give depraved wisdom to an unhappy man so that he will discover a way by which one man can carry on a conversation with another from one end of the earth to the other. At that time men will also fly through the air like birds and descend to the bottom of the sea like fish. And when they have achieved all this, these unhappy people will spend their lives in comfort without knowing, poor souls, that it is deceit of the Antichrist. And, the impious one! â€" he will so complete science with vanity that it will go off the right path and lead people to lose faith in the existence of God in three hypostases.

Apostasy

At that future time, due to the power of such great crimes and licentiousness, people will be deprived of the grace of the Holy Spirit, which they received in Holy Baptism and equally of remorse.

The Churches of God will be deprived of God-fearing and pious pastors, and woe to the Christians remaining in the world at that time; they will completely lose their faith because they will lack the opportunity of seeing the light of knowledge from anyone at all. Then they will separate themselves out of the world in holy refuges in search of lightening their spiritual sufferings, but everywhere they will meet obstacles and constraints. And all this will result from the fact that the Antichrist wants to be Lord over everything and become the ruler of the whole universe, and he will produce miracles and fantastic signs.

The Prophecy of St. Nilus

After the year 1900, toward the middle of the 20th century, the people of that time will become unrecognizable. When the time for the Advent of the Antichrist approaches, people's minds will grow cloudy from carnal passions, and dishonor and lawlessness will grow stronger. Then the world will become unrecognizable.

People's appearances will change, and it will be impossible to distinguish men from women due to their shamelessness in dress and style of hair. These people will be cruel and will be like wild animals because of the temptations of the Antichrist. There will be no respect for parents and elders, love will disappear, and Christian pastors, Bishops and priests will become vain men, completely failing to distinguish the right-hand way from the left.

At that time, the morals and traditions of Christians and of the Church will change. People will abandon modesty, and dissipation will reign. Falsehood and greed will attain great proportions, and woe to those who pile up treasures. Lust, adultery, homosexuality, secret deeds and murder will rule in society.

History / The Prophecy of St. Nilus
February 12, 2013, 10:20:59 AM
St. Nilus was one of the many disciples and fervent defenders of St. John Chrysostom. He was an officer at the Court of Constantinople, married, with two sons. While St. John Chrysostom was patriarch, before his exile (398-403), he directed Nilus in the study of Scripture and in works of piety. St. Nilus left his wife and one son and took the other, Theodulos, with him to Mount Sinai to be a monk. The Bishop of Eleusa ordained both St. Nilus and his son to the priesthood. The mother and other son also embraced the religious life in Egypt.

From his monastery at Sinai, St. Nilus was a well-known person throughout the Eastern Church. Through his writings and correspondence, he played an important part in the history of his time. He was known as a theologian, Biblical scholar and ascetic writer, so people of all kinds, from the Emperor down wrote to consult him.

His numerous works, including a multitude of letters, consist of denunciations of heresy, paganism, abuses of discipline and crimes. He also wrote about rules and principles of asceticism, especially maxims on the religious life. He warns and threatens people in high places, Abbots and Bishops, Governors and Princes, even the Emperor himself, without fear. He kept up a correspondence with Gaina, a leader of the Goths, endeavoring to convert him from Arianism. He denounced vigorously the persecution of St. John Chrysostom both to the Emperor Arcadius and to his courtiers.

St. Nilus must be counted as one of the leading ascetic writers of the 5th century. His feast is kept on November 12th in the Byzantine Calendar; he is commemorated also in the Roman Martyrology on the same date. St. Nilus probably died around the year 430, as there is no evidence of his life after that. --The Catholic Encyclopedia (1911 copyright edition)

Tonik, a dog with an eerily manlike face, attracted quite a bit of attention for Homeward Bound, the Indiana shelter that rescued him. The poodle-Shih Tzu mix's humanoid mug went viral after being highlighted by Gawker earlier this week.

Now, it turns out a lot of people want to take Tonik home. In a phone interview with The Huffington Post on Thursday, Homeward Bound Animal Welfare Group owner Jen Schwartz said that her shelter has been flooded with more than 350 applications to adopt the human-faced dog.

Schwartz told HuffPost it'll be a while before she's able to sort through them, but it's important to find the right fit.

"Its very ironic that he's in the public spotlight," Schwartz remarked to HuffPost. "He's actually a timid dog. He's a little stoic and reserved, and might not be really social at first."

Schwartz thinks Tonik wouldn't be a good match for families with children, since he's not the kind of dog that will want to play around a lot. She also said she's wary of people who might want to adopt Tonik because of his Internet fame.

Schwartz is still trying to wrap her head around all the sudden interest. A few years ago, the shelter had Bart Starr, a dog with a "ruddy coat" that was shortlisted to join the Broadway revival of the musical "Annie." Although that dog appeared on morning shows alongside Al Roker, Schwartz said Tonik has received far more attention.

How much more? Schwartz said that the photos of Tonik that went viral this week are kind of old, dating back to September 2011.

"He's much cuter now," Schwartz said, adding that Tonik has a new hair cut.

Despite his recent grooming, the dog still resembles a fuzzy-faced person. "It's mostly his eyes, but he also has an underbite, which makes his jaw stick out," Schwartz said. "His nose is also flesh colored, so it looks smaller."

Whether you think Tonik looks strange or totally adorable, there are lots of great dogs at Homeward Bound and other shelters that need good homes. -- http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/02/07/jen-schwartz-tonik-human-dog_n_2638892.html

Pope Benedict XVI announces resignation â€" as it happened
Paul Owen and Tom McCarthy
guardian.co.uk, Monday 11 February 2013 17.07 GMT

Here is a summary of today’s key events:

• Pope Benedict XVI has resigned, saying that at his age he cannot carry out all his tasks adequately and is losing strength in body and mind. His brother Georg suggested he was finding it difficult to walk and had been advised to stop making transatlantic journeys.

• The pope will step down on 28 February. A papal conclave will follow to elect his successor, who will be in place by the end of March, and perhaps in time for holy week on 24 March.

• Ghana’s Cardinal Peter Turkson, Nigeria’s Cardinal Francis Arinze, Canada’s Cardinal Marc Ouellet, and Italy’s Angelo Scola emerged as some of the leading candidates to succeed Benedict.  One of the next pope's first trips abroad is likely to be to Rio de Janeiro for World Youth Day on 1 July.

• Benedict says he wishes to continue to serve the Catholic church "through a life dedicated to prayer". He will revert to his former title of Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger upon his resignation, the Catholic church in England said. There was “absolute silence” this morning when the pope told cardinals the news, according to Mexican prelate Monsignor Oscar Sanchez, who witnessed his resignation.

• The pope made his decision over the last few months, Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi said, and it took all his closest aides by surprise. He will honour his commitments until he steps down. Lombardi said this was Benedict’s own personal decision. Upon resigning, he will go to the papal summer residence near Rome, and then will move to a cloistered residence in the Vatican, which may make life difficult for his successor.

• The archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, the head of the Anglican church, said he had learned of the pope's resignation with a "heavy heart but complete understanding".

• The last pope to resign was Gregory XII, in 1415.

• Child abuse victims in Ireland and the US criticised Benedict for not having done more to deal with the scandals of paedophile priests in the Catholic church.

Pope resignation announcement text

"I have convoked you to this Consistory, not only for the three canonizations, but also to communicate to you a decision of great importance for the life of the Church. After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry. I am well aware that this ministry, due to its essential spiritual nature, must be carried out not only with words and deeds, but no less with prayer and suffering. However, in today's world, subject to so many rapid changes and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith, in order to govern the bark of Saint Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me. For this reason, and well aware of the seriousness of this act, with full freedom I declare that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of Saint Peter, entrusted to me by the Cardinals on 19 April 2005, in such a way, that as from 28 February 2013, at 20:00 hours, the See of Rome, the See of Saint Peter, will be vacant and a Conclave to elect the new Supreme Pontiff will have to be convoked by those whose competence it is.

"Dear Brothers, I thank you most sincerely for all the love and work with which you have supported me in my ministry and I ask pardon for all my defects. And now, let us entrust the Holy Church to the care of Our Supreme Pastor, Our Lord Jesus Christ, and implore his holy Mother Mary, so that she may assist the Cardinal Fathers with her maternal solicitude, in electing a new Supreme Pontiff. With regard to myself, I wish to also devotedly serve the Holy Church of God in the future through a life dedicated to prayer."

Pope resigns, saying no longer has strength to fulfill ministry

ROME | Mon Feb 11, 2013 6:28am EST

(Reuters) - Pope Benedict said on Monday he will resign on Feb 28 because he no longer has the strength to fulfill the duties of his office, becoming the first pontiff since the Middle Ages to take such a step.

The 85-year-old pope said he had noticed that his strength had deteriorated over recent months "to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me".

"For this reason, and well aware of the seriousness of this act, with full freedom I declare that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of Saint Peter," he said according to a statement from the Vatican.

A Vatican spokesman said the pontiff would step down from 1900 GMT on February 28, leaving the office vacant until a successor is chosen. (Reporting by Steve Scherer; editing by Janet McBride)

It may be the Year of the Snake but surprised Thai customs officers were not amused after seizing more than 2000 snakes at Bangkok's new airport's cargo terminal. Hidden in more than 200 polystyrene boxes, the rat snakes and cobras had been returned to Thailand by customs officials in Hong Kong as the shipment declared to be fresh fruit - didn't have the proper paperwork. The seizure follows the discovery of more than 500 deadly cobras in the rear of a truck outside Bangkok last November. http://www.ajc.com/

"AE911Truth" is the name of a website called "Architects & Engineers for 9/11 Truth" whose backers say they are seeking to establish the truth of the September 11, 2001 suicide airliner attacks on New York's Twin Towers.

"It had really become an icon, a sort of symbol of the Republic which has remained famous throughout the ages," said Vincent Pomarede, head of the Louvre's painting department.

"We have a very passionate relationship with all our paintings and when something like this happens it's really hard to handle," he said.

Delacroix's "Liberty Leading the People" was painted after the 1830 July Revolution as a symbol of reconciliation following the overthrow of Bourbon King Charles X and the ascent to the throne of his cousin Louis-Philippe, Duke of Orleans.

The work, depicting a bare-breasted woman brandishing a tricolor flag and leading her people over the bodies of the fallen, was later adopted as a revolutionary emblem in the 1848 uprising which overthrew the Orleans monarchy.

It subsequently disappeared from public view before resurfacing in the Louvre after the advent of the Third Republic in 1871, after which its place in the French national consciousness was sealed.

The Louvre confirmed on Friday it had managed to save the painting as the black marker had not penetrated the upper layer of varnish and has been successfully removed.

Opened in December, the 150 million euro ($195 million) art center in Lens houses temporary exhibitions as well as a rotating collection of works from the Louvre museum in Paris.

It was conceived in an effort to regenerate a dreary northern region of France, once known for its mining industry, but now in economic decline.

While the Louvre in Paris looks out onto manicured lawns and flowerbeds of the Tuileries Gardens, Louvre-Lens sits on a disused coalmine and offers views onto slag heaps and a stadium housing the local football club.

PARIS (Reuters) - A woman has defaced Eugene Delacroix's painting "Liberty Leading the People" with a black marker as it hung in an outpost of the Louvre gallery in northern France.

Police arrested a 28-year-old woman on Thursday for writing "AE911" across the bottom of a painting so closely identified with the French Republic that its image once graced the 100-franc note and it has been reproduced on postage stamps.

Painted in 1830, the work was on loan from the main Louvre in Paris to the new Louvre-Lens gallery in northern France inaugurated last December by President Francois Hollande.

Should not be troublesome at all. The bank should cover the losses.

Compensation issue

One troublesome issue for local banks is whether they should cover the losses of clients who are victimised while using the ATM machines of other banks, some of which may not have installed the appropriate security measures.

"Sometimes, compromise settlements are made in situations like those, although we hear that these compromise settlements are growing in number," Garcia said.

Some local banks have moved proactively, contacting clients whose cards are suspected to have been compromised, and replacing their ATM cards with new ones.

"If we suspect that you have been victimised, we contact you and replace your card right away," said BDO's Tan.
#29077
Fraud-detecting measures

According to Pascual Garcia III, president of Philippine Savings Bank (PSBank), one of the country's largest savings banks, the industry first became aware of the syndicates' modus operandi in late 2011.

"Now we have deliberate measures to control that. One is by installing covers on ATM keypads to prevent [the syndicates] from being able to take videos of the passwords [when executing the keystrokes]," he said.

In an effort to get in front of the problem, local banks and their ATM networks have implemented measures to help prevent card-skimming.

"We are now installing what we call fraud-detection inhibitors," said Expressnet's Bernabe. "This is the green plastic device you see on the ATM machine which prevents the installation of a card reader."

He said the three ATM networks have also agreed to install "PIN shields" on their machines which are basically contraptions meant to cover the keypad from any video recording device that could be installed around the ATM.

Bernabe also pointed out that some banks have made it a practice to deactivate the international interconnectivity of the ATM cards they issue to prevent fraud. Instead of cards being automatically activated for use abroad, some clients now have to specifically ask their banks to activate this feature before they travel abroad.
#29078
According to bank officials, one indication that the operation is based overseas is the fact that some foreign-issued ATM cards that fell prey to this scam were reported to have experienced subsequent withdrawals abroad.

"They know when the ATM or credit card [when used for a cash advance] is from abroad because the withdrawals are made abroad," said another bank official who asked not to be named.

The problem has also reached the regulators at the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, which has reminded banks to strengthen their security procedures.

"We are aware of this situation and have alerted banks about it," said BSP deputy governor Nestor Espenilla Jr. "Advisories are also periodically issued to remind the public," he said.
#29079
Foreign-based syndicate

An official of the Expressnet ATM network said that investigations initiated by the local banking industry all point to an international organised crime network aided by locals.

"Based on our investigations, these activities were traced abroad to some Taiwanese, Malaysians, Sri Lankans and even Bulgarians," said Mike Bernabe, the Expressnet vice president for operations.

Using the information captured by the illegally installed card readers from the ATM cards, the syndicates are able to make balance inquiries and know exactly how much to withdraw. Most accounts are cleaned out within hours via multiple withdrawals, since the syndicates also know the transaction limits for each account.

Innocuous-looking

The exact amount of cash that has been lost to this syndicate has not been fully quantified but the president of another large local bank estimates the value to be in the "millions of pesos" since the scam began.

The devices that are used to read the ATM cards' magnetic strips-where crucial account data are stored-are innocuous-looking and can even be bought from vendors over the Internet, Tan explained.

Bernabe said that local banks have managed to seize some of these illegal devices and have sent them overseas for further investigation.

"We sent some of the devices abroad to MasterCard because they have more sophisticated technology that can decipher the data," he said, adding that the initial findings pointed to a foreign-based operation.
#29080
In an interview with the Inquirer, the bank officials revealed details of a massive "card-skimming" operation that they said was first observed in 2011 and had gradually peaked toward the end of 2012.

The problem became so widespread that the three main ATM networks operating in the country-Expressnet, Megalink and Bancnet-joined forces late last year and agreed to jointly implement measures to combat the scam.

Some banks have voluntarily recalled the ATM cards of clients whose accounts were suspected to have been compromised and replaced them with new cards.

Modus operandi

Nestor Tan, president of BDO Unibank, the country's largest bank, described the modus operandi of the syndicate or syndicates.

"The syndicate surreptitiously installs card readers on ATM machines, just on top of the slot where you (insert) your card. To the untrained eye, you will think this is just part of the machine," Tan said.

"At the same time, they install minute cameras on top which records the client's keystrokes when he enters his PIN," he added.

"Within a few hours, they can have a duplicate card and withdraw money from your account," he said.

Manila (Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN) - People withdrawing money from automated teller machines (ATM) are instinctively on their guard against anyone peeping from behind and seeing their bank details.

What they don't know is that the threat may have been in front of them all along.

Millions of pesos have been lost by customers of domestic banks to an international syndicate that specialises in duplicating the cards-and capturing the personal identification number (PIN)-of unsuspecting ATM cardholders, according to banking industry executives.

Facts and Trivia / Hell’s Angels
February 07, 2013, 10:15:31 AM

Probably the most well known American biker gang, The Hell’s Angels have a long and thorough history on American highways. Much information concerning their origins is hazy due to their long-standing code of secrecy. Sometime within the 1940’s or 1950’s in California Hell’s Angels MC was formed. Their insignia is the “death’s head” logo which is copied from the insignia of the 85th Fighter Squadron and the 552nd Medium Bomber Squadron. Red lettering over white backgrounds stands for the club’s colors. With so much popularity, Hell’s Angels chapters have sprung up across the Untied States as well as Russia and New Zealand and the continents of North America, South America, Europe and Australia.

The Hell’s Angels MC have gained mass notoriety in the U.S. due to their involvement in many highly publicized run-ins with the law and rival biker gangs. The most note-worthy of publicized events happened during the Altamont Free Concert at Altamont Speedway in December of 1969 where it is alleged that The Rolling Stones hired members of The Hell’s Angels to stand-in as bodyguards for the band. Violence erupted in the crowd and also onto the performance stage and as a result one male was stabbed to death after brandishing a pistol.

Another publicized incident occurred in Laughlin, Nevada in Harrah’s Casino and Hotel. A violent confrontation in the casino between rival Mongols MC resulted in one fatally stabbed Mongol gang member and two fatally shot Hell’s Angels members. -- http://listverse.com/

Health and Food / Kitty litter is radioactive
February 07, 2013, 09:56:53 AM

If, for some reason, you ever feel the compulsion to perform a swan-dive into your cat’s litter box, you might want to re-consider your decision. Aside from the fact that it’s disgusting to even think that would be a good idea, kitty litter is one of the most common sources of radiation in your home. That’s because one of its major components is bentonite clay, a type of . . . well, clay, that’s great for soaking up poop and urine, but awful at not containing traces of naturally-occurring uranium and thorium. Which it does. Even worse, thanks to the way in which we just dump thousands of tons of cat litter in landfills each year, there’s a danger that this radiation might eventually spread to our groundwater. -- http://listverse.com/

Hamis ug sinaw
ang tima-an sa akong pagkasi-aw
lingin, ug sama sa singkwenta ang gidak-on
niadtong kang Marcos pang panahon
nahinumduman ko pa ang pagkahitabo
ana-a lamang sa akong pahak
nga maoy gibalak
samtang gihimo ko kini...
ang bakya sa akong tiya,
lapad kaayo ug saba
hinimo sa kahoy
nga labihang kabaga
ana-a pay tansan sa lapalapa
aron kuno dili madakin-as
inig siya mangumpra
didto sa iskina.
ako ug si Islaw
nga akong ig-agaw
ningbisita sa balay
sa among tiya Milay
unya dayon siya nangumpra
nagtugon siya namong duha,
ayaw mog sagbot-sagbot
aron dili mag-gubot
ug dili magsaba-saba
kay bunalan gyuds akong bakya
dili ti-aw ang sulti ni tiya
ug dihang ningtalikod
nagsugod ming duha
gilapok-lapokan ni Islaw
ang sawug nga sinaw
gipatukar ang radyo
unya nagsayaw-sayaw
ung ang bud-bud sa kusina nga gi-gahin
wa gyud binli ug salin
apan,
dihang nadunggan namo ang taguktok
wala mi makalihok sa among kahadlok
ug sa pag-abli ni tiya
nakurat siya's iyang nakita
lapok, sagbot, banha
ug nisagit si tiya, "Haaaay!"
ug gi-andam ang bakya.
apan kusog nga ning sutoy si Islaw
ug akong nahibilin maoy nakatilaw.
karon dako na ko
duha kabo-ok ang akong alumpu-o
ang usa, mao ang da-an
ang lain nahulma sa tansan
apan,
sa kataposan ko nga nadunggan
kataw-anan,
kay si Islaw sa akong tiya nasakpan
gi-opawan.
