BLESSED LEON INCHAUSTI Y MONTEGUIA, one of the Eight Martyrs of Motril killed during the Spanish Civil War in 1936, was a parish priest of Bohol and Romblon in the late 1800s. The eight priests, all Augustinian Recollects, were beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1999 at St. Peters Basilica in Rome.

BATH, Maine â€" The Navy's need for speed is being answered by a pair of warships that have reached freeway speeds during testing at sea.

Independence, a 418-foot warship built in Alabama, boasts a top speed in excess of 45 knots, or about 52 mph, and sustained 44 knots for four hours during builder trials that wrapped up this month off the Gulf Coast. The 378-foot Freedom, a ship built in Wisconsin by a competing defense contractor, has put up similar numbers.

Both versions of the Littoral Combat Ship use powerful diesel engines, as well as gas turbines for extra speed. They use steerable waterjets instead of propellers and rudders and have shallower drafts than conventional warships, letting them zoom close to shore.

The ships, better able to chase down pirates, have been fast-tracked because the Navy wants vessels that can operate in coastal, or littoral, waters. Freedom is due to be deployed next year, two years ahead of schedule.

Independence is an aluminum, tri-hulled warship built by Austal USA in Mobile, Ala. The lead contractor is Maine's Bath Iron Works, a subsidiary of General Dynamics.

Lockheed Martin Corp. is leading the team that built Freedom in Marinette, Wis. It looks more like a conventional warship, with a single hull made of steel.

The stakes are high for both teams. The Navy plans to select Lockheed Martin or General Dynamics, but not both, as the builder. The Navy has ordered one more ship from each of the teams before it chooses the final design. Eventually, the Navy wants to build up to 55 of them.

Speed has long been relished by Navy skippers. Capt. John Paul Jones, sometimes described as father of the U.S. Navy, summed it up this way in 1778: "I wish to have no connection with any ship that does not sail fast; for I intend to go in harm's way."

Eric Wertheim, author and editor of the U.S. Naval Institute's "Guide to Combat Fleets of the World," said speed is a good thing, but it comes at a cost.

"This is really something revolutionary," Wertheim said. "The question is how important and how expensive is this burst of speed?"

Early cost estimates for Littoral Combat Ships were about $220 million apiece, but costs spiraled because of the Navy's requirements and its desire to expedite construction. The cost of the ships is capped at $460 million apiece, starting in the new fiscal year.

Both ships are built to accommodate helicopters and mission "modules" for either anti-submarine missions, mine removal or traditional surface warfare. The modules are designed to be swapped out within 24 hours, allowing the ships to adapt quickly to new missions.

While they're fast, they aren't necessarily the fastest military ships afloat. The Navy used to have missile-equipped hydrofoils and the Marines' air-cushioned landing craft is capable of similar speeds, Wertheim said. And smaller ships are capable of higher speeds.

Nonetheless, the speed is impressive, especially considering that other large naval vessels have been cruising along at a relatively pokey 30 to 35 knots for decades.

Loren Thompson, a defense analyst at the Lexington Institute, noted that Independence sustained 44 knots despite a 30-knot headwind and 6- to 8-foot seas in Alabama's Mobile Bay. "For a ship of this size, it's simply unheard of to sustain that rate of speed for four hours," he said.

Youtube Replay / Re: Last Movie You've Watched
October 22, 2009, 12:13:27 AM
actually there were 2 movies titled perfect getaway. the only difference is that they have different starting words. the first one the perfect getaway was released in 1998 starring antonio sabato, kelly rutherford, adrian pasdar, alicia coppola among others. the story is about a convict who wanted to escape from prison.

the other film was title a perfect getaway which is released just this year. the story evolves around honeymooning newly wed couple steve zahn (national security, daddy day care, dr. dolittle 2, stuart little 2, chelsea walls, shattered glass...) and milla jovovich (resident evil movie series, 5th element, the messenger, the million dollar hotel, zoolander...) who went to a hiking trip to hawaii where they meet an ex-military man portrayed by timothy olyphant (the hitman, die hard 4, dreamcatcher, a man apart...) and his girlfriend. i can say that the movie plot is similar to the movie joyride starring paul walker and steve zahn, breakdown starring kurt russell and turistas starring josh duhamel (transformers).

LONDON (Reuters) â€" A Briton who cost the insurance industry some 1.6 million pounds by staging almost 100 car crashes as part of a scam to win fraudulent payouts, was jailed for 4-1/2 years on Wednesday.

Mohammed Patel, 24, charged 500 pounds a time to stage accidents which enabled fraudsters to claim an average of 17,000 pounds from their insurers.

Police said he staged at least 92 crashes between 2005 and 2008, each time persuading the other driver to believe they were at fault.

The plot was uncovered after workers in an office block by the main A34 road in Cheadle, near Manchester, became suspicious about a regular number of crashes taking place at a nearby roundabout.

AXA insurance, one of the firms caught up in the scam, investigated and contacted police. Detectives found that Patel deliberately caused crashes for his clients by braking suddenly so the vehicle behind could not avoid a collision.

The claimants then demanded compensation from the victim's insurance firm for personal injury, legal fees, courtesy cars, and often with the damage to the cars fabricated.

Manchester's Minshull Street Crown Court heard that fraudsters were able to claim on average 17,000 pounds from insurance firms for each of the crashes Patel caused, the Press Association reported.

Patel himself raked in around 46,000 pounds for his role, and from his earnings he treated his girlfriend to gifts, two luxury cars and foreign holidays, police said.

"Patel was prepared to put lives in danger to make money," said Sergeant Mark Beales.

"This abuse of the insurance claims system has implications for all law-abiding road users."

Patel, from Bolton, admitted 17 charges including conspiracy to defraud, dangerous driving and driving while disqualified.

Another 24 co-conspirators are also due to be sentenced for their role in the scam.

"The cost of insurance fraud adds on average 44 pounds to every policyholder's insurance premium annually," said John Beadle, chairman of the Insurance Fraud Bureau.

BOSTON â€" A 27-year-old Massachusetts man has been charged with conspiring with others to carry out terror attacks against shoppers in U.S. malls and against U.S. military in Iraq.

Authorities in Boston say Tarek Mehanna (TEH'-rek meh-HAH'-nah) of Sudbury sought training in terrorist training camps and worked with others from 2001 to May 2008 on the conspiracy "kill, kidnap, maim or injure" people in foreign countries and to kill prominent U.S. politicians.

Federal prosecutors say Mehanna and his conspirators tried to get automatic weapons for a mall attack, but their plans were foiled when they could not get the weapons.

Mehanna's attorney, J.W. Carney Jr., did not immediately return calls for comment.

Mehanna was arrested last year for allegedly lying about a man who trained with al-Qaida members with the goal of overthrowing the Somali government.

Plot
Sheryl Hoover (Toni Collette) is an overworked mother of two children, who lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Her brother Frank (Steve Carell) is a homosexual scholar of French author Marcel Proust, temporarily living at home with the family after a suicide attempt. Her husband Richard (Greg Kinnear) has a Type A personality, and is striving to build a career as a motivational speaker and life coach. Dwayne (Paul Dano), Sheryl's son from a previous marriage, is a Nietzsche-reading troubled teenager who has taken a vow of silence until he can accomplish his dream of becoming a test pilot. Richard's foulmouthed father Edwin (Alan Arkin), recently evicted from a retirement home for snorting heroin, lives with the family; he is close with his seven-year-old granddaughter Olive (Abigail Breslin).

Olive learns she has qualified by default for the "Little Miss Sunshine" beauty contest that is being held in Redondo Beach, California in two days. Her parents and Edwin, who has been coaching her, want to support her, and Frank and Dwayne cannot be left alone, so the whole family goes. Because they have little money, they go on an 800-mile (1,287-km) road trip in their yellow Volkswagen T2 Microbus.

Family tensions play out on the highway and at stops along the way, amidst the aging van's mechanical problems. When the van breaks down early on, they learn that they must push it until it is moving at about 15 mph (24 km/h) before putting it into gear, at which point they have to run up to the side door and jump in. Throughout the road trip, the family suffers numerous personal setbacks, revealing their need for each other's support. Richard loses an important contract that would have jump-started his motivational business. Frank encounters the ex-boyfriend who, in leaving him for an academic rival, had led to his suicide attempt. Edwin dies from an apparent heroin overdose; to avoid being delayed by post-mortem arrangements, they smuggle his body out of the hospital. A policeman stops the car due to a damaged and continuously honking horn, and nearly discovers Edwin's body in the back of the van. Dwayne discovers that he is color blind, and Frank tells him that he can never become a jet pilot with color blindness, which prompts Dwayne to break his silence and throw a tantrum. Throughout the ordeal, Sheryl attempts to keep everyone, including herself, calm and sane.

A Volkswagen T2 Microbus, similar to the one in the filmThe climax takes place at the beauty pageant. After a frantic race against the clock, Olive is almost refused entrance for arriving at the hotel four minutes late. As she gets ready, the family observes her competition: slim, sexualized pre-teen girls with highly styled hair, wearing lipstick, adult-like swimsuits, and glamorous evening wear to perform highly elaborate dance routines with great panache. It quickly becomes apparent that Olive (plain, pale, slightly chubby, wearing large eyeglasses, and untrained in beauty pageant conventions) is out of her league.

As Olive's turn to perform in the talent portion of the pageant draws near, Richard and Dwayne recognize that Olive is certain to be humiliated and, wanting to spare her feelings, run to the dressing room to talk her out of performing. Sheryl, however, insists that they "let Olive be Olive", and Olive goes on stage. She joyfully performs the dance routine that her Grandpa Edwin had secretly choreographed for her: a burlesque performance to Rick James' song "Super Freak", innocently oblivious to the scandalized and horrified reaction of the audience and pageant judges. The pageant organizers are enraged and demand Sheryl and Richard remove Olive from the stage. Instead of removing her, one by one the members of the family join Olive on stage, dancing alongside her to show their support.

The family is next seen outside the hotel's security office where a police officer gives them their freedom in return for a promise never to enter a beauty pageant in the state of California again. Piling into the van with the horn still honking, they happily smash through the barrier of the hotel's toll booth and head back to their home in Albuquerque.

"The confrontation broke into the open after the armed bodyguards of former mayor Doloriech Dumaluan came into the picture to back up Sevilla in his verbal skirmish with the young Montano.

According to the younger Montano, he was provoked into drawing his firearm after he was allegedly berated by Sevilla in front of several Montano supporters.

As far as the two factions were concerned, it was one accident waiting to happen. Reports said that the Sevilla-Dumaluan faction was reportedly irked of Rommel’s over protective stance of his elder brother."

THE anti-graft court has approved the prosecution of a Mayor in Bohol for charging to the government P5,000 worth of gasoline supplied to his private vehicles. In a two-page Resolution of the Sandiganbayan Fifth Division, Chaired by Associate Justice Roland Jurado, it junked the motion for reconsideration filed by Mayor Doloreich Dumaluan of Panglao, Bohol who earlier asked a reinvestigation of his graft case.

The Sandiganbayan opined that the motion for reconsideration filed by Dumaluan is without merit and as such his arraignment shall now proceed on October 23, 2009.

The Sandiganbayan stressed that the findings of the Office of the Ombudsman in indicting Dumaluan is with sufficient ground and with legal and factual basis.

The court also pointed out that “there being neither new matter nor new evidence adduced, there is no reason to disturb the assailed resolution of the court.”

Dumaluan was charged for violation of Section 3e of the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act for “causing undue injury to the government” by charging to “the account of the Municipality the amount of P5,601.23, representing the cost of gasoline and diesel fuel supplied to his private vehicles when in fact he already received his Transportation Allowance for the month of January 2005.”

The Sandiganbayan earlier argued that the defenses and arguments presented by Dumaluan cannot compel the Ombudsman to consider such pieces of evidence.

As such, the Court ruled that “the arguments advanced by accused-movant Dumaluan are matters of defense that require evidentiary proof and support, the merits of which are best threshed out in a full-blown trial.”

Dumaluan steps down; Fuertes sworn as mayor
By KIT BAGAIPO

PEACEFUL STEP-DOWN. Panglao Mayor Doloriech Dumaluan delivered his brief remarks before he peacefully stepped down as town mayor after DILG Asst Director Pedro Noval served the 6-month suspension order 11 o'clock yesterday morning. Foto above shows Vice Mayor Pedro Fuertes taking oath before Noval as acting mayor of Panglao.    Panglao Mayor Doloreich Dumaluan was finally served his 6-month suspension as Vice Mayor Pedro Fuertes was immediately sworn in to assume as municipal mayor by Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Assistant Regional Director Pedro Noval 11 o'clock yesterday morning.

Moments after service of the suspension order, Dumaluan rushed to Cebu City with lead counsel, Atty. Victor dela Serna to file a petition at the Court of Appeals (CA) Visayas for a temporary restraining order (TRO).

Dumaluan was in his office at the town hall yesterday morning with his staff when Noval handed his suspension order which was meted by the Office of the Ombudsman last January 12.

Dela Serna received the order in behalf of the mayor who delivered a short talk at the municipal hall infront of some 100 employees and supporters.

As promised by Dumaluan, he stepped down from office peacefully 11 o'clock yesterday morning.

Vice Mayor Fuertes, on the other hand, who was in his office at the municipal hall, was sworn in by Noval minutes after serving Dumaluan's suspension order.

Efforts to interview Fuertes yesterday proved futile as he conducted a series of meetings with Panglao officials to implement his duties as acting mayor.

Fuertes was also instructed by Noval to issue a memorandum to the municipal chiefs of offices informing him that he is assuming in an acting capacity as mayor while Dumaluan is suspended.

SECURING TRO
According to Noval, Dumaluan is given 10-days to secure a TRO starting yesterday and another 5-days to get an injunction at the appellate court.

Dumaluan said in his speech that he is optimistic a restraining order will be granted by the CA while claiming he was not given due process with the implementation of the suspension.

The mayor said he has complete records and documentation on the case filed against him to discredit the Ombudsman decision.

BACKGROUND
The 6-month suspension stemmed from an administrative case filed by Panglao councilors Telesforo Mejos, Cerino Hormachuelos and Dennis Hora with municipal treasurer Rena Guivencan and budget officer Catalino Sumaylo.

The case arose from the mayor's alleged collection of gasoline allowances for his personal vehicles.

Dumaluan will be serving his suspension without pay and benefits for six months.
The Ombudsman decision found Dumaluan administratively guilty of 'simple misconduct' and that there is "substantial evidence proving that [Dumaluan] charged to the account of the municipality in the amount of P5,661.23" gasoline and diesel fuel expenses "supplied to his private vehicles."

Suspended with Dumaluan is municipal accountant Elvira Celnuar, who is meted a one-month suspension without pay and benefits for 'simple neglect of duty'.

Who's afraid of Panglao's Mayor Dumaluan?

YOU can say it again and no one among his army of enemies in Panglao is scared a bit? Let alone that local elections is just around the corner. And it is presumed that Mayor Dumaluan is not one who is afraid either for a possible square off with anybody in Panglao's political arena. That will make an interesting match up if ever former mayor Benedicto Alcala will make good his threat for a return bout against the incumbent mayor. What makes the Panglao mayoralty derby exciting is the welter of chares and countercharges hurled by both camps over the airlanes. If Dumaluan has its radio program over Station DYRD entitled Ang Bag-ong Panglao, his enemies in return bought two 30-minute slots over Station DYTR which they call Panglao Pagpakabana.

The enemies of Mayor Dumaluan are not contented with sponsoring a radio program to balance the terror of the mayor's own “barking dogs”. They (enemies of Dumaluan) also piled up a total of 13 criminal and administrative charges against the mayor before the Office of the Ombudsman. Among the string of cases Mayor Dumaluan is facing are malversation of public funds, abuse of authority, grave misconduct, conduct unbecoming of a public official,, another case of malversation of public funds for charging of gasoline used by his private vehicles, violation of the National Building Code, non-filing and late filing of Statement of Assets and Liabilities, unexplained wealth, non-issuance of occupancy permit, late issuance of business permit, perjury, falsification, dishonesty and gross misconduct.

The mayor was also hounded by his enemies involving a rape-slay case that took place near his resort in Bolod sometime in April 2004. According to reports reaching the Post, just as the policemen led by Chief Inspector Joseph Villas were zeroing in on the suspects of the crime, Dumaluan who eventually became mayor of Panglao unceremoniously transferred the two investigators to nearby Dauis. Some people in Panglao wondered aloud why the sudden transfer of the policemen when the victim was a cousin of the mayor. The victim was identified as Vivian Dumaluan. Only recently, one of the police investigators, SPO1 Dominic Ragusta, made a revelation, in an affidavit dated October 24, 2006 , that there were more than one perpetrator of the crime. So far only one suspect identified as Narciso Maghamil was made to answer for the gruesome crime and he is now locked at the Panglao PNP jail.

St. Teresa of Avila
(1515-1582)

Teresa lived in an age of exploration as well as political, social and religious upheaval. It was the 16th century, a time of turmoil and reform. She was born before the Protestant Reformation and died almost 20 years after the closing of the Council of Trent.
The gift of God to Teresa in and through which she became holy and left her mark on the Church and the world is threefold: She was a woman; she was a contemplative; she was an active reformer.

As a woman, Teresa stood on her own two feet, even in the man's world of her time. She was "her own woman," entering the Carmelites despite strong opposition from her father. She is a person wrapped not so much in silence as in mystery. Beautiful, talented, outgoing, adaptable, affectionate, courageous, enthusiastic, she was totally human. Like Jesus, she was a mystery of paradoxes: wise, yet practical; intelligent, yet much in tune with her experience; a mystic, yet an energetic reformer. A holy woman, a womanly woman.

Teresa was a woman "for God," a woman of prayer, discipline and compassion. Her heart belonged to God. Her ongoing conversion was an arduous lifelong struggle, involving ongoing purification and suffering. She was misunderstood, misjudged, opposed in her efforts at reform. Yet she struggled on, courageous and faithful; she struggled with her own mediocrity, her illness, her opposition. And in the midst of all this she clung to God in life and in prayer. Her writings on prayer and contemplation are drawn from her experience: powerful, practical and graceful. A woman of prayer; a woman for God.

Teresa was a woman "for others." Though a contemplative, she spent much of her time and energy seeking to reform herself and the Carmelites, to lead them back to the full observance of the primitive Rule. She founded over a half-dozen new monasteries. She traveled, wrote, foughtâ€"always to renew, to reform. In her self, in her prayer, in her life, in her efforts to reform, in all the people she touched, she was a woman for others, a woman who inspired and gave life.

Her writings, especially the Way of Perfection and The Interior Castle, have helped generations of believers.

In 1970, the Church gave her the title she had long held in the popular mind: doctor of the Church. She and St. Catherine of Siena were the first women so honored.

Comment:

Ours is a time of turmoil, a time of reform and a time of liberation. Modern women have in Teresa a challenging example. Promoters of renewal, promoters of prayer, all have in Teresa a woman to reckon with, one whom they can admire and imitate.

Quote:

Teresa knew well the continued presence and value of suffering (physical illness, opposition to reform, difficulties in prayer), but she grew to be able to embrace suffering, even desire it: "Lord, either to suffer or to die." Toward the end of her life she exclaimed: "Oh, my Lord! How true it is that whoever works for you is paid in troubles! And what a precious price to those who love you if we understand its value."
