The best way to explore a new city is to connect with the people who live in it. Join jetsetting presenters Toby Amies and Asha Gill on a radical urban adventure as they plug into city after city with the help of its most colourful and clued-in residents.

Bangkok

An Asian supercapital, a labyrinth, and a traffic jam rolled into one, Bangkok is a mash of the contemporary and the traditional, the sacred and the profane. Traveller Toby Amies goes bush-whacking in the ultimate man-made jungle.

He meets:

Nym -- a fellow photographer who bears the scars of a day at the world's weirdest tattoo festival and discovers something unheard of in the klongs of the Chao Praya River

Pariyakorn -- a Thai boxing promoter who unleashes her best female fighters on Toby and teaches him how to chill out with a good .45.

Jumbo -- a Buddhist bon viveur who shows Toby just what can happen when you combine a rocket scientist and a tuk-tuk.

Marko -- an emergency paramedic who takes Toby bodysnatching on the mean streets of Bangkok and places him at the mercy of man-eaters in a temple with a twist.

Manit -- an artist who points the finger at rampant consumerism armed with nothing more than a shopping trolley and a loud suit.

Andrew H -- a lifestyle magazine editor and roving gourmet who takes Toby hunting and gathering Bangkok-style.

Jewish Documentary  - Full Film

http://JewishHistory.org  Faith and Fate is a documentary telling the story of the Jews in the 20th Century.

The first Episode is called, "The Dawn of the Century" and covers 1900 - 1910.

This episode introduces the uniqueness of Jewish history in the 20th century within the
context of world history. At the turn of the 20th century, Jews were scattered across the
globe, representing only ¼ of one percent of the worlds population. It was a time of
empires, imperial rule and colonial expansionism. In Russia the masses, including the
Jews, lived in dire poverty which was compounded by grassroots antisemitism. In 1905
the Russian masses revolted and there was a general strike. On Bloody Sunday the
Czar responded with force. The Czar did not abdicate until 1917, which is typically the
date given for the second Russian Revolution, which, in turn, led to increased pogroms
against the Jews. The pogroms and the economic conditions forced approximately
40% of Jewish population to leave the Russian Empire and go to Western countries
including the United States and to Palestine and other countries as far away as South
Africa and Australia.

Emigration and the Enlightenment presented Jews with the dilemma and opportunity to
maintain or reject their traditional Jewish upbringing, and many decided to forgo their
traditional Judaism and blend in with their larger non-Jewish society. Within the
traditional Jewish world, change was occurring as well, with the rise and acceptance of
the Mussar Movement, an ethical approach to Judaism. Because Jews were not
allowed into institutions of higher education in Eastern Europe, most of them went to
study in yeshivas to sharpen their intellect. The traditional yeshiva, unintentionally,
became a breeding ground for all philosophies, Jewish and secular alike. Zionism
grew as a national movement, and was led by secular Jews antithetical to traditional
Judaism. While most rabbis rejected Zionism and its leaders, because of their
nontraditional beliefs, a minority of rabbis developed religious Zionism, which combined
traditional Judaism with Zionist philosophy. The Old Yishuv Jews, who had settled in
Palestine in the late 1800s, were committed to traditional Judaism and rejected
secular, nationalistic ideas of the New Yishuv Zionists.

The Sephardic Jews living in Moslem and Arab countries at the turn of the 20th
Century maintained their own rich Jewish traditions and heritage, which often differed
from those of the Ashkenazim. There was relative peace within the Jewish community
and among the leadership in these Arab and Moslem countries, and although life was
sometimes difficult, these Sephardic Jews did not experience, by and large, pogroms
or the influences of the Enlightenment or Reform Judaism.

In Europe, Jews were the leaders of the Labor and Socialist movements and
spearheaded the establishment of labor unions in America. The challenge of
assimilation in the United States was the greatest difficulty confronting Jewish
immigrants. Attempts were made to stem the tide. Reform Judaism became a symbol
of acceptance into modern American society and Dr. Solomon Schechter initiated the
Universal Synagogue movement which became Conservative Judaism. Also
Sephardic and Ashkenazic Jewish immigrants had to find their respective places within
the Jewish community and in their new host country, the United States, as well..
A small, strong group of American Jewish immigrants managed to cling to their Jewish
traditions and adapt themselves to the new reality in America. Meanwhile, for Jews
around the world, with the threat of WWI looming, the imperial race for supremacy was
escalating.

Fisherman's Wharf San Francisco

California Travel Expert Veronica Hill of http://www.CaliforniaTravelExpert.com and the California Essential Guide app offers a guide to the best attractions in San Francisco Fisherman's Wharf.

There are dozens of things to do in Fisherman's Wharf. Take the San Francisco cable cars down to the Hyde Street Pier, where you can explore the Fisherman's wharf attractions, seafood restaurants and museums.

Most of the sights are located along Jefferson Street, which is where you'll find the historic San Francisco seafood restaurants and stands serving up the city's famous boiled crab and hot clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl.

If you're craving more of that fabulously chewy San Francisco sourdough, head over to Boudin Bakery in Fisherman's Wharf, where you can watch and talk to artisan breadmakers as they create their legendary sourdough loaves before your eyes.

Located on Pier 45, Musee Mecanique is a mechanical museum that's home to dozens of old-time penny arcade games, including some from San Francisco's historic Playland at the Beach.

On Hyde Street Pier, you'll find the flotilla of ships at the San Francisco Maritime National Historic Park. Although the Pier is free, you can pay a fee to board these turn-of-the-century ships. Also along the waterfront, you can tour the USS Pampanito, which sank six ships during World War II.

Fisherman's Wharf is home to several daily San Francisco bay cruises, bike rentals and sightseeing tours. You can explore the city on a San Francisco Go Car, zip through Fisherman's Wharf by Segway, or join a cycling tour across the Golden Gate Bridge.

The Blue & Gold Fleet also departs here daily, offering excursions to popular destinations including Angel Island, Monterey and Carmel. Daily tours to Alcatraz depart from Alcatraz Cruises on Pier 33.

For a bit of touristy fun, head to Pier 39 — a shopping and restaurant complex filled with souvenir shops and the occasional live shows. Go ahead and succumb to its guilty pleasures, from a ride on the double-decker carousel, to glimpse at the barking California sea lions on K-dock. These playful pinnipeds arrived here in 1990, and have been a major crowd pleaser ever since. Although their numbers come and go throughout the year, there are always a few hanging out. Upstairs, Aquarium of the Bay offers a glimpse at more than 20,000 ocean creatures.

If you have a sweet tooth, don't miss Ghiradelli Square, where you can indulge in San Francisco's famous chocolate creations, or do a bit of shopping. Built in 1907, the Cannery is another good bet — where you'll find some adorable sidewalk cafes and boutiques.

If you're looking for San Francisco hotels near Fisherman's Wharf, book a room at the Radisson Fisherman's Wharf, Fairmont Heritage Place or The Argonaut. All three are just steps from Jefferson Street and the attractions of Fisherman's Wharf.

Tips: Parking in San Francisco Fisherman's Wharf is available across the street from Pier 39 in a large parking structure. You can find a map of Fisherman's Wharf on their official website at http://www.fishermanswharf.org/visit.aspx?q=10037&c=1

Sea lions on Pier 39.
Pier 39 is a shopping center and popular tourist attraction built on a pier in San Francisco, California. At Pier 39, there are shops, restaurants, a video arcade, street performances, an interpretive center for the Marine Mammal Center, the Aquarium of the Bay, virtual 3D rides, and views of California sea lions hauled out on docks on Pier 39's marina. The marina is also home to the floating Forbes Island restaurant. A two-story carousel is one of the pier's more dominant features, although it is not directly visible from the street and sits towards the end of the pier. The family-oriented entertainment and presence of marine mammals make this a popular tourist location for families with kids.

The pier is located at the edge of the Fisherman's Wharf district and is close to North Beach, Chinatown, and the Embarcadero. The area is easily accessible via the historic F Market streetcars.

From the pier one can see Angel Island, Alcatraz, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the Bay Bridge. Blue & Gold Fleet's bay cruises leave from Pier 39.

Pier 39 was first developed by entrepreneur Warren Simmons and opened October 4, 1978.[1]

History story of Pier 39 Sea Lions.
California Sea Lions have been always present in San Francisco Bay. They started to haul out on docks of Pier 39 in September 1989. Before that they mostly used Seal Rock for that purpose. Ever since September 1989 the number of sea lions on Seal Rock has been steadily decreasing, while their number on Pier 39 has generally increased. Some people speculate that sea lions moved to docks because of the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, but the earthquake occurred months after the first sea lions had arrived at Pier 39. It is likely that the sea lions feel safer inside the Bay.[2]

Although the reason for their migration to the pier is unclear, the refurbishing of the docks in September 1989 required the removal of all boats from that area, leaving large open spaces for the sea lions to move into. Once the project was completed, boat owners returned, but did their best to navigate around the sea lions; no efforts were made to encourage the new guests to leave. By the end of that year, less than a dozen sea lions frequented the docks at Pier 39.[2] By January 1990, their numbers had increased to 150 animals. Owners of the 11 boats docked there began to complain about having to avoid the animals who can weigh up to half a ton, and odor and noise complaints began to pour in. Press releases caught national attention, and the sea lions began to attract tourists. Advice from The Marine Mammal Center was to abandon the docks to the animals, and to relocate the boats elsewhere.[2] Although fluctuations in the number of sea lions at Pier 39 are dramatic, as many as 1,139 have been officially reported at one time, many of whom are recognizable to researchers and others, and some of whom have been unofficially named. Volunteers and staff at The Marine Mammal Store and Interpretive Center monitor the sea lion population each day, and educational information is provided to tourists who visit from around the world. Scientists continue to collect information there, adding to knowledge about sea lion health, dietary habits, and behavior.[2] In November 2009 the more than 1,500 sea lions that had lived at the pier began to leave, and by late December 2009 nearly all were gone; a similar flux in population occurs annually, with the animals returning in the spring. Although the reason for their seasonal appearance and departure is not known for certain, according to Jeff Boehm, executive director of the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito, "Most likely, they left chasing a food source," anchovies and sardines.[3] A handful of sea lions did return in February, and by late May several hundred could once again be seen on Pier 39. It remains unknown exactly where they went and why. However, in December 2009, nearly 4,000 sea lions that were identified as members of the California sub-species were seen outside Oregon's Sea Lion Caves, which meant that they were likely the sea lions from Pier 39.[4]

San Francisco Pier 39 Tree Lighting 2012

In San Francisco, there is three tree lighting events, that I know of: Pier 39, Union Square, and Ghirardelli Square. Last year, I came to meet character friends from Disneyland resort. I was able to get a Polaroid with my favorite classic Disney character, Minnie Mouse. Unfortunately, this year, I arrived too late, and they stopped the line. I never stayed for the tree lighting event, and this year I decided to. I stayed in my spot for a good 2+ hours, but it was definitely worth it! I saw everything and was really close to the stage. Sadly, I didn't bring my point and shoot camera so all pictures and videos were taken on my iPhone 5. And you know how it goes with night pictures, that's the only thing I regret. Otherwise, it was a great experience and definitely something I am adding to my tradition of things I do with my boyfriend during the holidays besides outdoor ice skating.

P.S. Happy birthday Mickey and Minnie Mouse!

Enjoy!

Jessica

Entangled sea lion rescue Blonde Bomber - Pier 39 - 10-09-12

This California sea lion was rescued on Oct. 9, 2012 after he was found with an entanglement around his neck. Rescuers from The Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito, CA used a dart gun loaded with a mild sedative to assist in the rescue operation.

San Francisco: Walking through outdoor stores @ Pier 39

After our very informative, entertaining and filling North Beach culinary tour on February 22, 2008, we proceeded up a very steep section of Filbert Street to reach the top of Telegraph Hill. In the mid 1800s a semaphore or signaling tower was located here that would announce the arrival of ships to local financiers, merchants and speculators. This signaling system was later replaced with an electrical telegraph in 1862.

The 360 degree view from atop Telegraph Hill is amazing, we could see the downtown financial district with the Transamerica Pyramid, the San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge, the northern waterfront with Alcatraz and the Marine Headlands in the background, the Golden Gate Bridge and the western half of the San Francisco peninsula, stretching out towards Golden Gate Park.

The crowning jewel of Telegraph Hill is the Coit Tower, built in 1933 with donations from Lillie Hitchcock Coit, a well-known volunteer firefighter and unusual female character who lived from 1842 to 1929. The main floor of the Coit Tower holds a series of murals that adorn all sides of the building, featuring vignettes of Californian life in the 1930s. The famous murals were created in 1934 as part of the Public Works of Art Project, a federal employment program for local artists.

The content of the murals is fascinating as they depict scenes from industry and business as well as street scenes and agricultural images. Anyone interested in the history of the 1930s will be fascinated by the depiction of society during the Great Depression. The views from the parking lot of the Coit Tower over San Francisco Bay are exquisite.

After an extensive visit we headed down the hill, taking the hidden-away Filbert Steps on the eastern side of Telegraph Hill. These wooden staircases and walkways are embedded into a residential neighbourhood that is patched against the steep flanks of Telegraph Hill. Once arrived at the bottom we continued our way up to Pier 39, one of San Francisco's most popular tourist areas that features a variety of retail stores, attractions and eateries. Highlights of Pier 39 include the historic carousel, which was handcrafted in Italy and is the only carousel in the United States that features artistic renderings of its home city.

On the west side of Pier 39 another attraction awaits: the famous sea lions that started congregating here in 1990, shortly after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. Initially there were only a few dozen sea lions. But over just a few months the population grew to more than 300, and today the sea lions are perennial favourites with locals and tourists alike.

California Sea Lions - Pier 39 San Francisco - YouTube Travel

Not long ago the Pier 39 California Se Lions disappeared over night, just gone.  Lucky for us the returned from their trip up the California/Oregon coast.  It's thought that food or mating motivated them to move, whatever it was I'm just glad as are all the tourists watching and photographing them that they're back.
Sidebar - we saw a lot of seal colonies along the coast in California and Oregon.
Canada slaughters seals by the hundreds of thousands and I don't think they would be as welcome at a pier by a city as the sea lions are in California.  Thank you San Francisco...

San Francisco's Sea Lions at Pier 39 (in HD)

Filmed October 20, 2009 before the animals began leaving in droves November 27, 2009, almost as if someone had issued an order. San Francisco's Sea Lions could be found sun bathing, barking and up to their old antics at the marina's K-dock. They "hauled out" on PIER 39's K-Dock shortly after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. The boisterous barking pinnipeds started arriving in droves, taking over the docks in January 1990. And visitors to Pier 39 had enjoyed their antics ever since.

Part 1: Fisherman's Wharf Comedy: San Francisco's Bush Man Scaring Young Girls (420, 2007)

Part 1 of 2 -- the Bushman is a well known street artist in San Francisco. He sets up where tourists are too busy looking at the scenery to pay attention to a bush in the street.

Bush man sits on a crate behind some tree clippings. When someone gets close enough he shakes the bush and scares them.

Sounds simple, but it's the best street game I've seen, remniscent of Mal Sharpe's antics in San Francisco. Once a person is scared they realize they are surrounded by a group of people laughing at them -- the Bushman's former victims. Across the street and around the bushman, I have seen up to fifty people watching the show.

Filmed on April 20, 2007 at Fisherman's Wharf near Pier 39 in San Francisco. See the Bushman!

San Francisco - California - U.S Cities

San Francisco, officially the City and County of San Francisco, is the financial, cultural, and transportation center of the San Francisco Bay Area, a region of 7.5 million people which includes San Jose and Oakland. The only consolidated city-county in California, it encompasses a land area of about 46.9 square miles (121 km2) on the northern end of the San Francisco Peninsula, giving it a density of about 17,179 people per square mile (6,632 people per km2). It is the most densely settled large city (population greater than 200,000) in the state of California and the second-most densely populated large city in the United States after New York City. San Francisco is the fourth most populous city in California and the 13th most populous city in the United States, with a population of 805,235 as of the 2010 Census. The San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont metropolitan area has a population of 4,335,391.
In 1776, colonists from Spain established a fort at the Golden Gate and a mission named for Francis of Assisi on the site. The California Gold Rush of 1849 propelled the city into a period of rapid growth, increasing the population in one year from 1,000 to 25,000, and thus transforming it into the largest city on the West Coast at the time. After three-quarters of the city was destroyed by the 1906 earthquake and fire, San Francisco was quickly rebuilt, hosting the Panama-Pacific International Exposition nine years later. During World War II, San Francisco was the port of embarkation for service members shipping out to the Pacific Theater. After the war, the confluence of returning servicemen, massive immigration, liberalizing attitudes, and other factors (Vietnam) led to the Summer of Love and the gay rights movement, cementing San Francisco as a center of liberal activism in the United States.
Today, San Francisco is one of the top tourist destinations in the world, ranking 35th out of the 100 most visited cities worldwide, and is renowned for its chilly summer fog, steep rolling hills, eclectic mix of architecture, and its famous landmarks, including the Golden Gate Bridge, cable cars, and Chinatown. The city is also a principal banking and finance center, and the home to more than 30 international financial institutions, helping to make San Francisco rank eighteenth in the world's top producing cities, eighth in the United States, and ninth place in the top twenty global financial centers. San Francisco has the 2nd highest per capita GDP in the United States after Washington, D.C. ( source Wikipedia )

San Francisco: Sea Lions @ Pier 39, city skyline in background
