A few observations kabahin ani nga tira:

1. Kinsay nasilo? (N.B.: Are you sure you're using the right word?)
2. As for the sky, it matters. A green sky is a make-believe sky. Or, looking at the argument from another angle, a person who perceives the sky as green has had too much grass. After all, the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. Of course, good fences make good neighbors.

;D

1.  si pikoy nay angay ani, adto sa iyang thread nga tigmo-tigmo.  angay pod nga tubagon ni lolla aron magpabilin siyang cute.

2.  a green sky is not always a make-believe sky.  there are color blind people, for one thing.  you must have seen gray skies too.  sunsets give off orange skies and dusks give purple shadows.  forthwith, the sky is not always blue and grass is not always green.  heard of blue grass?

as for fences and neighbors, if my neighbor loves the videoke and howls the whole day like a cow undergoing abortion, believe me, i'd rather have a fence for a neighbor.

ikaduhang tira... pasagdan ang mga side comments.  this is a forum, and it's not a forum that was made to massage each other's egos.  if it were so, we would end up telling each other how great, how nice, how pretty, how prettier the boys are, and what great human specimens we are.  (i take care to point out here that i'm not a gorilla.  not yet, anyway.)

we share what we know, pass on what we read, say what we think, we give our opinions from the most erudite to the dumbest.

nothing is ever personal, thus nothing should be taken as such.  (if personal this may be, then we wouldn't be using all these silly forum names.)

i failed in that subject.  it followed biology, that's why, and after a frog dissection, i can't help but mourn so my mind was closed to apologies and apologizing. ;D

unang tira... ngano man tuod nga masilo man ta kun dato ba o pobre ang magpapremyo?  what does it matter if the sky is blue or green, as long as it's a sky?

The Chiong Family

father     : Dionisio Chiong, the father of the young women, was said to have had ties to Peter Lim, widely believed to be a drug kingpin, but the two had had a falling out. The older Chiong was scheduled to testify before Congress about Lim's alleged drug activities, but he refused when, shortly before the date, Marijoy and Jacqueline disappeared

mother   :  Thelma Jimenea-Chiong;  sister of the social secretary of then newly-elected President Joseph Estrada; relative of the wife of then Supreme Court Chief Justice Hilarion Davide; currently VisMin vice president of Crusade Against Violence (CAV)

Thelma Jimenea-Chiong

Mr. and Mrs. Dionisio and Thelma Chiong

When Regional Trial Court Judge Martin Ocampo issued his verdict of life imprisonment for the Chiong 7, Estrada was quoted in newspapers telling the judge to resign if he could not do his job properly.

Government prosecutors handling the Chiong case got promotions, some insist, because of their role in it. Primo Miro is now deputy ombudsman for the Visayas. Ramon Jose Duyongco is now regional director of the National Bureau of Investigation, the first agency head who was never an NBI agent. Thelma's reputation as a power broker then led a number of officials desiring higher posts to seek her endorsement.

Thelma vehemently denies any interference by Estrada and Lacson in the case "Hindi naman totoo 'yun. (That is not true.) Although presidente si Erap at sekretarya yung kapatid ko, (he was president and my sister was his secretary,) Erap never lifted a finger to help us.  Even si Lacson.  In the beginning lang, noong nawala yung mga bata, nandoon si Lacson, pero after that, wala na."  (Even Lacson. In the beginning only, when the kids were lost, Lacson was there, but after that, he wasn't there anymore.) (http://framedinthephilippines.com/Newsreport2005_08METRO.htm)

[Some Of] The Involved

The Larrañaga Family

father     :  Manuel "Chuchu" Larrañaga, from Alegria in the Basque region of Spain; one of the pioneering pelotaris from Spain who went to Cebu when the Jai-Alai opened there in the 1960s

mother   :  Margarita "Margot" Gonzalez Larrañaga, one of two daughters of Milagring Osmeña Gonzalez, a daughter of the late President Sergio Osmeña; cousin to Senator Sergio Osmeña III, former Senator John Osmeña, former Cebu City Mayor and now Congressman Tomas Osmeña, and former Cebu Governor Emilio Osmeña

The Osmeña name may have been more a curse than a blessing to Margot especially during the trial, as Cebu media kept tagging Paco as "an Osmeña scion."  She had to appeal to them to stop bringing politics into the picture.

Truth to tell, sources say, the high-profile Osmeña politicians have distanced themselves from the case, if not leaving Margot and her family out in the cold.  Informed of the life sentence of his nephew, then Sen. John Osmeña said, referring to the crime, "Wala akong paki (I don't care)."  Sen. Sergio Osmeña III said, referring to the crime, "Wala sa lahi ng mga Osmeña ang tumulong sa ganyan. (The Osmeñas don't tolerate crimes like that)." (Philippine Daily Inquirer, May 6, 1999)  Margot declines to talk about her famous relatives, although her eyes belie the hurt she feels. Amphibious vehicle to go on sale soon in US

(philstar.com) October 15, 2012

DETROIT (AP) â€" Amphibious vehicles aren't just for James Bond anymore.

A one-person all-terrain vehicle that doubles as a personal watercraft is scheduled to go on sale by the end of this year.

The vehicle â€" called the Quadski â€" goes up to 45 miles per hour on land. To go in the water, the driver presses a button and the wheels fold into the sides in five seconds. The Quadski also goes 45 miles per hour in the water.

The Quadski will cost around $40,000. It will be sold at water sports dealerships in New York, Boston, the Great Lakes, Florida and Texas.

Michigan-based Gibbs Sports Amphibians says it has spent 16 years and $200 million developing the technology in the Quadski.

Then, Cox reportedly left her filthy underwear and “used menstrual pad” in her work space.

The Post said Gallardo was seeking unspecified money damages from Miller and Cox for discrimination and “mental anguish.”

Cox yesterday said she was “shocked” by the suit “because she was offered a very heavy settlement and declined.”

In July 2010, Cox allegedly threw a phone and chair at Gallardoâ€"and “smeared human feces” on a countertop in her work area in the Hell’s Kitchen living/work space that Miller and Cox shared, the suit said.

A year later, Cox went on another rampage, scattering all of Gallardo’s files across the floor and destroying her printer “with a hammer,” the suit added.

“Nobody should have to work under those conditions,” Gallardo’s lawyer, high-powered employment attorney Matthew Blit, told the Post.

The suit said Gallardo went to work for Millerâ€"whose 1986 Batman comic series “The Dark Knight Returns” is considered revolutionaryâ€"as an executive coordinator in November 2008.

Cox, Miller’s much younger actress girlfriend, soon made it clear she had issues with Gallardo, yelling things like, “I can’t understand your funky accent. Speak fâ€"king English,” according to the suit.

Batman writer, girlfriend sued by Filipina beauty queen

Philippine Daily Inquirer
October 12, 2012

This is darkâ€"even for The Dark Knight.

A former local beauty queen-actress who worked for legendary comic-book writer Frank Miller said she was put through hell by the “Batman” scribe’s gal pal, according to a report from The New York Post.

In a Manhattan Supreme Court lawsuit, 41-year-old Joanna Gallardo-Mills, better known as Dindi Gallardo, said Miller’s “Sin City” creator’s girlfriend, Kimberly Cox, smeared her work area with feces, destroyed her printer with a hammer, threw phones at her and even left a used feminine hygiene pad by her desk.

Each additional congressman is a drain on taxpayers’ money.  The taxpayers shoulder the congressmen’s salaries and allowances and those of the members of their respective staffs.  What is worse, they also collect pork barrel funds when they have no districts.  Where will they use these pork barrel allocations?

Abolish the party-list system

[In the second place,] are not the regular congressmen supposed to represent all sectors in their districts, rich and poor, marginalized or not, in whatever sector or line of occupation they are?  So why make special congressional districts for these sectors?
#28837
The same is true with many other party lists.  In fact, 99 percent of the accredited party lists with representatives in the House do not really represent the marginalized sectors of society that they supposedly represent.  In the past, it was so easy for any ambitious politician to have a party list supposedly representing a particular marginalized sector apply for accreditation with him as the top nominee, and the Comelec would accredit it.  Politicians who would never be elected as regular representatives were therefore able to enter the House through the back door, i.e., the party list.
#28838
The most blatant example is the party list supposedly of security guards.  Its representative is Mikey Arroyo, the son of former President Gloria Arroyo.  He is not a security guard, never has been one, and never will be.  So why is he representing security guards in Congress?  Because his mother was the president in power when he was accredited, and the Comelec has been very lax in accrediting party lists.  I asked the security guards in our village if they are members of the party list and they answered with a vehement “No!”  They haven’t even heard of it until they read in the newspapers that they were being represented in Congress by Mikey whom they have not chosen, never met and never voted for.
#28839
Isn’t it clear that the party-list system is being abused?  If the Commission on Elections cannot stop these abuses, the system should be abolished.

Of the more than 100 party-list congressmen, only four are not millionaires or multi-millionaires.  How can millionaires represent the marginalized sectors of society?
#28840

sakspan...

Roman Catholicism in Saudi Arabia is officially barred from being practiced, though Roman Catholics are allowed into the country for temporary work.  There is a large expatriate Filipino community in Saudi Arabia, many of whom are thought to be Catholics.  There are no dioceses in Saudi Arabia, which comes under the jurisdiction of the Apostolic Vicariate of Northern Arabia.

Saudi Arabia allows Roman Catholics and Christians of other denominations to enter the country as foreign workers for temporary work, but does not allow them to practise their faith openly, and as a result Roman Catholics and Christians of other denominations generally only worship in secret within private homes.  Items and articles belonging to religions other than Islam are prohibited.  These include Bibles, crucifixes, statues, carvings, items with religious symbols, and others, although the Government's stated policy was that such items were allowed for private religious purposes.

The Saudi Arabian Mutaween (Arabic: Ù...طوعين), or Committee for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice prohibits the practice of any religion other than Islam.  Conversion of a Muslim to another religion is considered apostasy.  The Government does not permit non-Muslim clergy to enter the country for the purpose of conducting religious services.

Fair Trials International (FTI), an NGO working on behalf of those who face a miscarriage of justice in a country other than their own, entered an amicus brief which was submitted to the Supreme Court of the Philippines by the European Commission's Manila delegate.  The amicus argued that under both international and Philippine law, Larrañaga had been the subject of an unfair trial and had never been given the opportunity to show his innocence.

FTI has since represented Larrañaga before the United Nations, appealing against injustice in the Philippines.  Sarah de Mas, spokesperson for FTI who brought the case to the attention of the European Parliament and successive presidencies of the European Union, stated that Larrañaga had served a lengthy sentence for a crime he could not have committed. Verdict

The seven co-defendants were convicted of murder and sentenced to death by lethal injection on February 3, 2004.

Larrañaga's counsels Felicitas Aquino Arroyo and Sandra Marie Olaso Coronel urged the high court to admit the amicus curiae from the Basque Bar Council (BBC), Barcelona Bar Associations (BBA) and Bar Association of Madrid.  The three organizations expressed their interests in the case of Larrañaga since he was a "Spanish citizen with origins in the Basque Country, and therefore a member of the European Union."

The BBA mentioned that the execution of a Spanish citizen would be in breach of the violation of the principle of reciprocity in international law, noting that if a Filipino citizen is found guilty in Spain, no Spanish court would have imposed the death penalty, nor would have allowed him extradited to any country imposing capital punishment.  Former Ambassador Sedfrey Ordóñez claims he is the victim of a mistrial. The others convicted by then Regional Trial Court (RTC) Judge Martin Ocampo include Josman Aznar, Rowen Adlawan, Alberto Cano, Ariel Balansag and brothers James Anthony and James Andrew Uy.

In 2004, the Supreme Court confirmed the conviction, expanding it to rape and murder, and imposed the death penalty on the convicts except for James Andrew, a minor at the time of the crime, who was sentenced to life in prison. (http://globalnation.inquirer.net/cebudailynews/)

Defense

Thirty-five witnesses, including Larrañaga’s teachers and classmates at the Center for Culinary Arts (CCA) in Quezon City, testified under oath that he was in Quezon City, when the crime is said to have taken place in Cebu.  However, the trial court considered these testimonies irrelevant, rejecting these as coming from "friends of the accused," and were not admitted.

During his trial in the Cebu Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 7, defense lawyers sought to present evidence of his whereabouts on the evening of the crimeâ€"that Larrañaga, at that time 19 years old, was at a party at the R&R Restaurant along Katipunan Avenue, Quezon City, and stayed there until early morning the following day.  After the party, the logbook of the security guard at Larrañaga's condominium indicates that Larrañaga returned to his Quezon City condominium at 2:45 a.m.

Rowena Bautista, an instructor and chef at the culinary center, said Larrañaga was in school from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and saw him again at about 6:30 p.m on July 16.  The school’s registrar, Caroline Calleja, said she proctored a two-hour exam where Larrañaga was present from 1:30 p.m.

Larrañaga attended his second round of midterm exams on July 17 commencing at 8 a.m. Only then did Larrañaga leave for Cebu in the late afternoon of July 17, 1997.

Airline and airport personnel also came to court with their flight records, indicating that Larrañaga did not take any flight on July 16, 1997, nor was he on board any chartered aircraft that landed in or departed from Cebu during the relevant dates, except the 5 p.m. PAL flight on July 17, 1997 from Manila to Cebu. The Trial

Prosecution

According to the prosecutors, at 10:00 p.m. on July 16, 1997, Larrañaga and seven other defendants kidnapped the Chiong sisters near a mall on the island of Cebu in the Philippines, raped them, and then threw one of the sisters into a ravine.  The other sister was never found.

The prosecutors' case against Larrañaga centered on the testimony of a co-defendant, David Valiente Rusia.  In exchange for blanket immunity, he testified.

The trial court only permitted Larrañaga’s counsel to cross examine him for half an hour, despite the fact that Rusia’s direct testimony lasted for days.  In that half hour, Larrañaga’s counsel established that Rusia had lied to the prosecution and the court concerning his prior convictions.

Rusia had claimed he had never been convicted of crime.  He has a record of burglary and forgery.  Rusia fainted when confronted with this evidence.  Davidson Rusia is a convicted felon and was sentenced to prison twice in the United States for other crimes.  Rusia claimed that he was with Larrañaga in Ayala Center, Cebu early in the evening of July 16, the evening Larrañaga says that he was at R&R Restaurant in Quezon City with his friends.

Rusia was not known to Larrañaga and only appeared as a “state witness” 10 months after the event. (wikipedia)

Guns, she said, were necessary for protection against revenge killings common among Muslim clans, or against other armed groups that have sprouted in poverty-wracked Mindanao as an indirect consequence of the insurgency.

MILF brigade chief Guiazakallaha Jaafar, 28, who boasts of 3,000 fighters under his command, said he and his men believed their leaders would not order them disarmed without consensus from key officers.

He likened himself to "a fighting cock without spurs" if he no longer had a weapon.

Jaafar said they would consent to be transformed into a police force or a special militia unit under the envisioned MILF autonomy.

"They can make us into a police force, or village watchers, even militia units. But they can not just take away our guns," he said.

Even if peace is achieved, Ganalan and his wife retold stories of war that have caused emotional scars impossible to heal.

His wife, Norah Ibrahim, said one of Ganalan's two brothers killed in the fighting was mutilated, and his severed head found stuffed in a pail.

Norah said their two children, now in their 20s, were also MILF fighters.

She said she hoped the deal could eventually mean fighting would stop, allowing her to see her family more often and help her tend a small shop.

But she too believed the men should not be stripped of their weapons, arguing guns were a way of life in Mindanao, where more than four million Muslims live.

"A Bangsamoro (Muslim) is always ready to fight," she said.

They were cadres of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF), the first organised rebel force to wage war with the government in what became an enduring insurgency that has so far left an estimated 150,000 people dead.

The MNLF, however, dropped its bid for independence and eventually signed a peace pact with Manila in 1996 for autonomy.

Ganalan joined a faction of rebels that split from the MNLF in 1977 to push ahead with the secession, and the group later became known as the MILF.

But the MILF also began exploring possibilities in the late 1990s of its own pact with the government, resulting in ceasefires that have largely kept the peace for nearly a decade and led to Monday's planned peace roadmap.
#28876
During a long conversation this week in Camp Darapanan, where rebels and their families live inside a sprawling compound of coconut groves and corn fields, Ganalan said on the one hand he would respect the MILF elders' decision on the peace deal.

But Ganalan also expressed deep reservations about giving up a dream of independence that he had fought for so long to achieve and which he said was justified in the Koran.

"Regardless of whoever tells us what to do, if it goes against the Koran, we will not surrender," Ganalan said.

Ganalan joined the rebel ranks as a young boy in the early 1970s along with five older brothers in response to a call to fight for an independent Islamic state.
#28877
"There is no surrender," said Ganalan, who is in his 50s and whose wiry battle-scarred body is a testament to hard living on the war zone.

Ganalan said he and other rebels among the 12,000-strong MILF force had not yet learnt about the details of the agreement with the government, which President Benigno Aquino announced to international applause last weekend.

The "framework agreement" for peace would create a new autonomous region in the southern Philippines, which Muslims regard as their ancestral homeland predating Spanish and Christian colonisation that began in the 1500s.

As part of the deal, the MILF would give up its quest for an independent homeland in parts of the southern region of Mindanao, which makes up about a third of the Philippines.

Its soldiers would also be "decommissioned", although no details on how and when they would lay down their array of weapons -- ranging from World War II-era guns to M-16s and rocket propelled grenades -- were spelled out.

Philippine Muslim rebels want to keep guns

12 October 2012

After watching two of his brothers die during four decades of fighting in the southern Philippines, Muslim rebel Abdulhamid Ganalan feels a planned peace deal could be surrender.

Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) leaders are set to sign an accord with the government on Monday that will aim to end the rebellion by 2016, but the guerrilla said he and his subordinates did not want to give up their arms.

"I will not agree. That is like full surrender," Ganalan told AFP from inside Camp Darapanan, the MILF's administrative headquarters, when asked whether he would lay down his weapons as part of a peace accord.

Ganalan, who is a senior member of an MILF elite security detail guarding rebel chief Murad Ebrahim, said he had invested all his life in the rebellion and years of fierce fighting had taught him one lesson.

I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.

This statement is a rewording of a passage from page 261 of The Audacity of Hope, in which Barack Obama spoke of the importance of not allowing inflamed public opinion to result in innocent members of immigrant groups being stripped of their rights, denied their due as American citizens, or placed into confinement, as was done with Japanese-Americans during World War II.  The original contains no specific mention of "Muslims": In the wake of 9/11, my meetings with Arab and Pakistani Americans, for example, have a more urgent quality, for the stories of detentions and FBI questioning and hard stares from neighbors have shaken their sense of security and belonging.  They have been reminded that the history of immigration in this country has a dark underbelly; they need specific reassurances that their citizenship really means something, that America has learned the right lessons from the Japanese internments during World War II, and that I will stand with them should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.

I never emulate white men and brown men whose fates didn't speak to my own.  It was into my father's image, the black man, son of Africa, that I'd packed all the attributes I sought in myself, the attributes of Martin and Malcolm, DuBois and Mandela.

This statement is a rewording (two separate sentences have been conflated into one, further changing an intended meaning already obscured by the lack of context) of material from page 220 of Dreams from My Father.  The material appears as part of a passage in which Barack Obama describes his profound disappointment in learning (from information provided by his half-sister, Auma) that the lofty image he had held all his life of his role model, his biological father (a man he barely knew, because Barack's father had left him and his mother when Barack was just two years old, and Barack had only seen his father once since then), was a flawed, idealized one.

All my life, I had carried a single image of my father, one that I had sometimes rebelled against but had never questioned, one that I had later tried to take as my own.  The brilliant scholar, the generous friend, the upstanding leader â€" my father had been all those things.  All those things and more, because except for that one brief visit in Hawaii, he had never been present to foil the image, because I hadn't see what perhaps most men see at some point in their lives: their father's body shrinking, their father's best hopes dashed, their father's face lined with grief and regret.

Yes, I'd seen weakness in other men â€" Gramps and his disappointments, Lolo [my adoptive father] and his compromise.  But these men had become object lessons for me, men I might love but never emulate, white men and brown men whose fates didn't speak to my own.  It was into my father's image, the black man, son of Africa, that I'd packed all the attributes I sought in myself, the attributes of Martin and Malcolm, DuBois and Mandela.  And if later I saw that the black men I knew fell short of such lofty standards; if I had learned to respect these men for the struggles they went through, recognizing them as my own â€" my father's voice had nevertheless remained untainted, inspiring, rebuking, granting or withholding approval.  You do not work hard enough, Barry.  You must help in your people's struggle.  Wake up, black man!

Now, as I sat in the glow of a single light bulb, rocking slightly on a hard-backed chair, that image had suddenly vanished.  Replaced by ... what?  A bitter drunk?  An abusive husband?  A defeated, lonely bureaucrat?  To think that all my life I had been wrestling with nothing more than a ghost!

It remained necessary to prove which side you were on, to show your loyalty to the black masses, to strike out and name names.

This sentence appears on page 101 of Dreams from My Father, as part of a long passage in which Barack Obama talked about his time at Occidental College in Los Angeles.  It was another expression of a theme touched on in many other sections of the book â€" the difficulties of being expected to associate oneself with a particular racial heritage, especially for those who came from multiracial backgrounds â€" prompted by the example of a girl named Joyce, one of Obama's classmates:

She was a good-looking woman, Joyce was with her green eyes and honey skin and pouty lips.  We lived in the same dorm my freshman year, and all the brothers were after her.  One day I asked her if she was going to the Black Students' Association meeting.  She looked at me funny, then started shaking her head like a baby who doesn't want what it sees on the spoon.

"I'm not black," Joyce said.  "I'm multiracial."  Then she started telling me about her father, who happened to be Italian and was the sweetest man in the world; and her mother, who happened to be part African and part French and part Native American and part something else.  "Why should I have to choose between them?" she asked me.  Her voice cracked, and I thought she was going to cry.  "It's not white people who are making me choose.  Maybe it used to be that way, but now they're willing to treat me like a person.  No â€" it's black people who always have to make everything racial.  They're the ones making me choose.  They're the ones who are telling me that I can't be who I am ..."

They, they, they.  That was the problem with people like Joyce.  They talked about the richness of their multicultural heritage and it sounded real good, until you noticed that they avoided black people ...

To avoid being mistaken for a sellout, I chose my friends carefully.  The more politically active black students.  The foreign students.  The Chicanos.  The Marxist professors and structural feminists and punk-rock performance poets.  We smoked cigarettes and wore leather jackets.  At night, in the dorms, we discussed neocolonialism, Franz Fanon, Eurocentrism, and patriarchy.  When we ground out our cigarettes in the hallway carpet or set our stereos so loud that the walls began to shake, we were resisting bourgeois society's stifling conventions.  We weren't indifferent or careless or insecure.  We were alienated.

But this strategy alone couldn't provide the distance I wanted, from Joyce or my past.  After all, there were thousands of so-called campus radicals, most of them white and tenured and happily tolerant.  No, it remained necessary to prove which side you were on, to show your loyalty to the black masses, to strike out and name names.

There was something about him that made me wary, a little too sure of himself, maybe.  And white.

This statement comes from page 142 of Dreams from My Father, as part of a passage in which Barack Obama was being interviewed by a man named Marty Kaufman (a pseudonym for Jerry Kellman) for a position as a community organizer in Chicago.  Kaufman was specifically looking for a black man to work with him, because he was white and needed someone to help him appeal to both sides in a racially polarized city.  The statement reproduced above creates a false impression by eliding the ending to the final sentence: Obama makes reference (in his expression of misgivings) to Kaufman's whiteness being a problem, because Kaufman himself had said it was a problem:

I had all but given up on organizing when I received a call from Marty Kaufman.  He explained that he'd started an organizing drive in Chicago and was looking to hire a trainee.  He'd be in New York the following week and suggested that we meet at a coffee shop on Lexington.

His appearance didn't inspire much confidence.  He was a white man of medium height wearing a rumpled suit over a pudgy frame.  His face was heavy with two-day-old whiskers; behind a pair of thick, wire-rimmed glasses, his eyes seemed set in a perpetual squint.  As he rose from the booth to shake my hand, he spilled some tea on his shirt ...

He ordered more hot water and told me about himself.  He was Jewish, in his late thirties, had been reared in New York.  He had started organizing in the sixties with the student protests, and ended up staying with it for fifteen years.  Farmers in Nebraska.  Blacks in Philadelphia.  Mexicans in Chicago.  Now he was trying to pull urban blacks and suburban whites together around a plan to save manufacturing jobs in metropolitan Chicago.  He needed somebody to work with him, he said.  Somebody black.

[ ...]

He offered to start me off at ten thousand dollars the first year, with a two-thousand-dollar travel allowance to buy a car; the salary would go up if things worked out.  After he was gone, I took the long way home, along the East River promenade, and tried to figure out what to make of the man.  He was smart, I decided.  He seemed committed to his work.  Still, there was something about him that made me wary.  A little too sure of himself, maybe.  And white â€" he'd said himself that that was a problem.

I found a solace in nursing a pervasive sense of grievance and animosity against my mother's race.

No such sentence (nor anything close to it) appears anywhere in either Dreams from My Father or The Audacity of Hope.  This statement was taken from a March 2007 article about Barack Obama; they are not Obama's own words, but rather those of the article's author (recast in the first person):

In reality, Obama provides a disturbing test of the best-case scenario of whether America can indeed move beyond race. He inherited his father’s penetrating intelligence; was raised mostly by his loving liberal white grandparents in multiracial, laid-back Hawaii, where America’s normal race rules never applied; and received a superb private school education.  And yet, at least through age 33 when he wrote Dreams from My Father, he found solace in nursing a pervasive sense of grievance and animosity against his mother's race.
