as for the rest of us here in this subdivision, we feel that the innocence of our small community has been changed forever because of this family.  we feel we have become defensive and wary.  too bad.  maayo gani kay layo-layo mi gamay sa ilang balay.  we're not directly affected.  one thing is sure; if ever we host parties for whatever reason, i will never invite this neighbor from hell.

November 06, 2012, 10:00:05 AM
10. Mistake: Waking up during surgery
• Cause: An under-dose of anesthesia.
• Consequences: The brain stays awake while the muscles stay frozen. Most patients aren't in any pain but some feel every poke, prod and cut.
• Prevention: When you schedule surgery, ask your surgeon if you need to be put asleep or if a local anesthetic might work just as well.
• Example case: Erin Cook

When Erin Cook had surgery to have an ovary tumor removed, she remembers going to sleep and then the searing pain of being sliced open. She felt trapped in her body, unable to move or speak. The hospital later informed her, she says, that a gas vaporizer was leaking during her operation and she got only 5% of the anesthesia she needed.

9. Mistake: Lookalike tubes
• Cause: A chest tube and a feeding tube can look a lot alike.
• Consequences: Medicine meant for the stomach goes into the chest.
• Prevention: When you have tubes in you, ask the staff to trace every tube back to the point of origin so the right medicine goes to the right place.
• Example case: Alicia Coleman

Alicia Coleman had a feeding tube in her stomach and a chest tube in her vein. A caregiver at a medical daycare mistakenly used the wrong tube and pumped medicine into Coleman's chest instead of her stomach. Coleman died when the medicine stopped her tiny heart.

8. Mistake: Infection infestation
• Cause: Doctors and nurses don't wash their hands.
• Consequences: Patients can die from infections spread by hospital workers.
• Prevention: It may be uncomfortable to ask, but make sure doctors and nurses wash their hands before they touch you, even if they're wearing gloves.
• Example case: Josh Nahum

Josh Nahum fractured his skull and broke his leg in a skydiving accident. He was on the mend in the hospital when he caught an infection from the hospital. He died after doctors were powerless to fight the bacteria raging through his body.

7. Mistake: Operating on the wrong body part
• Cause: A patient's chart is incorrect, or a surgeon misreads it, or surgical draping obscures marks that denote the correct side of the operation.
• Consequences: The surgeon cuts into the wrong side of a patient's body.
• Prevention: Just before surgery, make sure you reaffirm with the nurse and the surgeon the correct body part and side of your operation.
• Example case: Jesse Matlock

Jesse Matlock had a wandering right eye. A simple surgery could fix it, but the surgeon cut into the left eye instead of the right. According to Matlock's mother, Tasha Gual, the surgeon told her she lost her sense of direction and didn't realize she'd operated on the wrong eye until after the operation

6. Mistake: Air bubbles in blood
• Cause: The hole in a patient's chest isn't sealed airtight after a chest tube is removed.
• Consequences: Air bubbles get sucked into the wound and cut off blood supply to the patient's lungs, heart, kidneys and brain. Left uncorrected the patient dies.
• Prevention: If you have a central line tube in you, ask how you should be positioned when the line comes out.
• Example case: Blake Fought

Blake Fought died in the hospital on the day he was scheduled to be discharged. He was sitting upright when a nurse removed his central line chest tube and covered the hole in his chest with gauze. Air entered the wound and formed bubbles in his blood that cut off blood flow to his major organs. Fought should have been lying down, and the nurse should have sealed the hole airtight.

5. Mistake: The ER waiting game
• Cause: Emergency rooms get backed up when overcrowded hospitals don't have enough beds.
• Consequences: Patients get sicker while waiting for care.
• Prevention: Doctors listen to other doctors, so on your way to the hospital call your physician and ask them to call the emergency room.
• Example case: Malyia Jeffers

A long ER wait cost Malia Jeffers her limbs. Doctors had to amputate Jeffers entire left hand, fingers on her right, and both her legs after staff at an emergency department made her wait nearly five hours while a flesh eating bacteria rapidly spread through her tiny body. An ER nurse wrongly assessed Jeffers' condition as a less serious virus.

4. Mistake: Fake doctors
• Cause: Con artists pretend to be doctors.
• Consequences: Medical treatments backfire. Instead of getting better, patients get sicker.
• Prevention: Confirm online that your physician is licensed.
• Example case: Sarafina Gerling

Sarafina Gerling saw web advertisements by Arthur Copes claiming that his back brace treatment could straighten crooked spines. She thought Copes was a doctor who could correct her scoliosis.

Gerling wore a brace from Copes for six months but her curves only got worse.

Copes was eventually found guilty of insurance fraud.

3. Mistake: Lost patients
• Cause: Patients with dementia are sometimes prone to wandering.
• Consequences: Patients may become trapped while wandering and die from hypothermia or dehydration.
• Prevention: If your loved one sometimes wanders, consider a GPS tracking bracelet.
• Example case: Mary Cole

Nursing home patient Mary Cole turned up missing during a bed check. She was found four days later locked in a storage closet. She was severely dehydrated and died soon after. The family's lawyer says Cole, who suffered from Alzheimer's disease, wandered into the closet and got trapped.

2. Mistake: Surgical souvenirs
• Cause: Surgical staff miscounts (or fails to count) equipment used inside a patient during an operation.
• Consequences: Tools get left inside the body.
• Prevention: If you have unexpected pain, fever or swelling after surgery, ask if you might have a surgical instrument inside you.
• Example case: Nelson Bailey

Nelson Bailey left surgery with a sponge still inside his abdomen -- a foot long by a foot long.

When doctors eventually discovered the mistake and re-opened his wound to remove the sponge, it was rotting and had created perforations in his intestines, Bailey says.

1. Mistake: Treating the wrong patient
• Cause: Hospital staff fails to verify a patient's identity.
• Consequences: Patients with similar names are confused.
• Prevention: Before every procedure in the hospital, make sure the staff checks your entire name, date of birth and barcode on your wrist band.
• Example case: Kerry Higuera

Kerry Higuera was given a CT scan of her abdomen even though she was three months pregnant. The hospital had confused her with another patient also named Kerry, who was actually supposed to get the scan. The needless imaging increased the risk that Higuera's unborn baby would get leukemia or have birth defects. Fortunately, her son, Nathan, is doing fine.

10 shocking medical mistakes

By John Bonifield, CNN and Elizabeth Cohen, CNN Senior Medical Correspondent
November 5, 2012

(CNN) -- When you're a patient, you trust you're in good hands, but even the best doctor or nurse can make a mistake on you or someone you love.

"Mistakes are happening every day in every hospital in the country that we're just not catching," says Dr. Albert Wu, an internist at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Medical errors kill more than a quarter million people every year in the United States and injure millions. Add them all up and "you have probably the third leading cause of death" in the country, says Dr. Peter Pronovost, an anesthesiologist and critical care physician at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

The harm is often avoidable, and there are strategies you can use to help doctors and nurses get things right.

Here's a list of 10 shocking medical mistakes and ways to not become a victim:

In a separate study published this January in the Archives of Internal Medicine, Australian researchers found that people who drank three cups of tea a day lowered their blood pressure levels by an average of two to three points.

Meanwhile, flavonoids in tea are thought to improve the blood vessels' tone and reduce body weight and abdominal fat. A Dutch population study also found that high tea consumption is associated with a reduced risk of death from heart disease.

Ai Yoto and her team from the University of Shizuoka found that L-theanine significantly inhibited the blood-pressure increases in a high-response group, which consisted of subjects whose blood pressure rose more than average while performing a mental task after taking a placebo. Caffeine also had an effect on blood pressure, but to a lesser degree than L-theanine. In addition, the L-theanine was shown to reduce tension-anxiety scores on mood tests.

The study was published this week in the Journal of Physiological Anthropology.

Tea may lower anxiety and blood pressure

AFP Relax â€" Fri, Nov 2, 2012

A new study supports prior evidence that tea can not only reduce blood pressure but calm anxiety, despite its caffeine content.

Japanese researchers tested two compounds found in tea -- L-theanine, the amino acid contained in tea leaves, and caffeine -- and their effect in the body when under stress. They enlisted 14 subjects who underwent three separate trials, in which they took L-theanine and a placebo, caffeine and a placebo, or a placebo only. The subjects were then asked to complete mental activities under varying degrees of stress, such as solving arithmetic questions with their non-dominant hand submerged in a bucket of ice water.

When God Created Fathers

Erma Bombeck

When the good Lord was creating Fathers he started with a tall frame.

And a female angel nearby said, "What kind of Father is that? If you're going to make children so close to the ground, why have you put fathers up so high? He won't be able to shoot marbles without kneeling, tuck a child in bed without bending, or even kiss a child without a lot of stooping."

And God smiled and said, "Yes, but if I make him child size, who would children have to look up to?"

And when God made a Father's hands, they were large and sinewy.

And the angel shook her head sadly and said, "Do you know what you're doing? Large hands are clumsy. They can't manage diaper pins, small buttons, rubber bands on pony tails or even remove splinters caused by baseball bats."

And God smiled and said, "I know, but they're large enough to hold everything a small boy empties from his pockets at the end of a day...yet small enough to cup a child's face in his hands."

And then God molded long, slim legs and broad shoulders.

And the angel nearly had a heart attack. "Boy, this is the end of the week, all right," she clucked. "Do you realize you just made a Father without a lap? How is he going to pull a child close to him without the kid falling between his legs?"

And God smiled and said, "A mother needs a lap. A father needs strong shoulders to pull a sled, balance a boy on a bicycle, and hold a sleepy head on the way home from the circus."

God was in the middle of creating two of the largest feet anyone had every seen when the angel could contain herself no longer.

"That's not fair. Do you honestly think those large boats are going to dig out of bed early in the morning when the baby cries? Or walk through a small birthday party without crushing at least three of the guests?"

And God smiled and said, "They'll work. You'll see. They'll support a small child who wants to ride a horse to Banbury Cross, or scare off mice at the summer cabin, or display shoes that will be a challenge to fill."

God worked throughout the night, giving the Father few words, but a firm authoritative voice; eyes that saw everything, but remained calm and tolerant.

Finally, almost as an afterthought, he added tears.

Then he turned to the angel and said, "Now, are you satisfied that he can love as much as a Mother?"

The angel said nothing more.

isles, do you miss your papa?

terribly so.  would you believe he had said many, many years ago that he could rest, he could finally go, once i got married and settled?  it became a family joke and my siblings teased me.  but it was more because they thought i was difficult to "marry off".  it turned out that he meant it.

Daddy, Don't You Walk So Fast

Wayne Newton

The love between the two of us was dying
And it got so bad I knew I had to leave
But halfway down that highway when I turned around
I saw My little daughter running after me crying

Daddy, don't you walk so fast
Daddy, don't you walk so fast
Daddy, slow down some 'cause you're makin' me run
Daddy, don't you walk so fast

Now, it broke my heart to tell my little daughter
That her daddy had to run to catch a train
She had no way of knowin' I was leavin' home for good
I turned around and there she was again as she said to me

Daddy, don't you walk so fast
Daddy, don't you walk so fast
Daddy, slow down some 'cause you're makin' me run
Daddy, don't you walk so fast

If only for the sake of my sweet daughter
I just had to turn back home right there and then
And try to start a new life with the mother of my child
I couldn't bear to hear those words again, she cried and said

Daddy, don't you walk so fast (My daughter cried)
Daddy, don't you walk so fast
Daddy, slow down some 'cause you're makin' me run
Daddy, don't you walk so fast
Daddy, slow down some 'cause you're makin' me run
Oh, daddy, don't you walk so fast

dear carla,

but i never equated my spectral form with this thing called love.  ang atong porma way labot sa atong swerte.  so cheer up.  true love comes when you least expect it, like a thief in the night.  it also comes from the most unexpected places.  like manila and bohol, perhaps.  oh, do remember to give chongki your mobile phone number.

sincerely,

ate islander

Patch Adams the movie:

The 1998 film Patch Adams was based on Adams' life and views on medicine.  Adams has criticized the film, saying it eschewed an accurate representation of his beliefs in favor of commercial viability.  He said that out of all aspects of his life and activism, the film portrayed him merely as a funny doctor.  Patch Adams also said of Robin Williams in an interview, "He made $21 million for four months of pretending to be me, in a very simplistic version, and did not give $10 to my free hospital.  Patch Adams, the person, would have, if I had Robin's money, given all $21 million to a free hospital in a country where 80 million cannot get care."

However, in another interview, Adams did clarify that he did not hate Williams, and Williams has actively supported St. Jude Children's Research Hospital for several years.

As a speaker, Dr. Adams travels around the globe lecturing about his medicine methods. (wikipedia)

[Patch] Adams urges medical students to develop compassionate connections with their patients.  His prescription for this kind of care relies on humor and play, which he sees as essential to physical and emotional health.  Ultimately, Adams wants the Gesundheit! Institute to open a 40-bed hospital in rural West Virginia that offers free, holistic care to anyone who wants it.

Adams was awarded the Peace Abbey Courage of Conscience Award on January 29, 1997. (wikipedia)

Pinoy wins international transvestite contest in Thailand

November 3, 2012

A 21-year-old transgender beauty from the Philippines â€" Kevin Balot â€" was crowned "Miss International Queen 2012" in Thailand's seaside resort Pattaya on Friday.

One Filipino fan said that winning a transvestite contest in Thailand, the land of "lady boys," was like winning a soccer tournament in Brazil.  An emotional Balot told reporters that she hoped the win would help her gain acceptance from her father.

"I'm very proud to be the first here, and I hope my dad will accept me.  Because in the family I'm the only boy, and my dad has big expectation of me.  I made it.  I won the International Queen Pageant, and I believe that my dad will accept me not only as his son but also as his daughter," she said.

21 contestants from 15 countries vied for the crown in the annual competition for transvestites.

Balot will also receive 10,000 US dollars, a crown from a well-known gems store in Thailand and other gifts.  Balot will travel to represent the transvestite pageant.

The contestants were selected from more than 100 entries from nearly 30 countries.

There were four Filipino transvestite contestants in the final stage but only two made it through to the final 10.

Balot has participated in three transvestite pageants in the Philippines but competed abroad for the first time in the Miss International Queen contest.

"We really looked at her in the first round because she's lovely, and she is very personable.  We liked the way she answered the question.  She's really smart," explained Seri Wongmontha, head of the judges in the pageant. - with Reuters, GMA News
